You Are In Love With Every thing Solo exhibition at Kata galler y, Tokyo April 2013

I have always loved my life and I love inviting my subjects into the celebration of being alive and loving and abundance. I never understood why people complain and spread negative feelings so I choose to photograph from a place of love. Have you ever woken up and felt like you just love everybody and everything? This feeling propels me and compels me to connect to any stranger. This is the hear t of my photography.

12 years ago I stumbled into a bar on Sukhumvit soi 16, its name was Gig Groceries; It was love at first sight, it became my favorite place to hang out in Bangkok. It lasted little over two years but it’s impact is still with us today. This is a tribute to Bangkok’s indie scene and the amazingly gifted and wonderful people that makes Bangkok such a great city to explore life’s mysteries. It is now ten years since Gig Groceries closed, since then many venues have come and gone. Moose with many of the same people still in the scene still doing their thing is continuing the Gig spirit. Until quite recently I thought that Gig referred to the Thai word gig, in English referred to as Fuck Buddy, but it was originally gig as in a gig, a band playing together, later it adopted the double meaning.

After I moved to New York City in the early 80’s I got a job printing black and white for Ralph Gibson, at the same time I lived in Larry Clarke’s apartment on Hudson street next door to my favorite night club Area, I never saw daylight. We were in love with the city and with the feeling that anything is possible and anything goes. This is my love story and tribute to that time and to New York City.

All the photographs in this show are taking either inside the apar tment or through the windows at 90 St. Marks Place in New York’s East Village. In 1986, Jesper moved to his apar tment on the corner of St. Marks and First Avenue. It was above the St. Mark’s Bar & Grill where the Rolling Stones had just filmed the video for “Waiting on a Friend”. It was to be his home, and the backdrop for much of his photography, for the next 20 years. In those days St. Marks was a rough place. It bustled with runaways and skate kids, with dealers and dime bag rappers and fabulously dressed low-lifers on their way to or from an after-hours club. Seemingly every other person walking by had a guitar case, was an actor, a model, an ar tist or a photographer. Jesper’s apar tment became ‘home’ to a wonderful mix of roommates, visitors, friends, lovers, total strangers and people that just needed a place to crash ... or par ty. It also became the place where he photographed – blurring the lines completely between his life and his ar t. Everything was spontaneous. ‘I just made sure I had a camera in my hand.’

Emails from visitors

Hi Jesper,

hi jesper --

I stumbled upon galler y onetwentyeight today and I can’t stop thinking about your exhibit. I can’t stop looking at your photographs in your book I purchased. The life in the images oozes out of each one. I feel like I can hear the voices of the beautiful people in your photographs; like I can feel the touch of the skin on skin and the energy shared in each memor y. I’m sure it sounds absurd, but your photographs make me feel like your memories are my own.

i happened to stumble into your show down on (rivington?) a month or two ago. looked a couple places for your book and they didn’t have it but i just found a copy at st marks bkstore! looking thru, and just so happy i found it -- your photos are just so real & make me feel good about being alive and excited to be in nyc.

I just wanted to send you a note of thanks for sharing your ar t. Yours aren’t just por traits - they’re stor ytellers and dreams that I wish I could have each night. Love, Amy

STMARKS 1986-2006 20 years of love and friendships A photo exhibition by

JESPER HAYNES During twenty years, Jesper Haynes had a very open home on 90 St. Marks place in New York’s East Village. His friends, their friends, roommates, lovers, people left over from parties and others that nobody knows how they got there, formed the basis for Jesper’s photographs. Zonked out, sometimes spaced out, living life on the edge the cast of characters that populated Jesper's life stare out from his images laughing, leaping and posing - testimony to deep friendships and a desire to refuse the mundane. Jesper's images, all of which were shot in his apartment, are infused with a rare creative energy: at once raw, sexy, joyful, zany and highly personal.

Press review – On Asia

BANGKOK: Swedish-American photographer Jesper Haynes brings us an exhilarating dose of New York cool with his latest exhibition ‘St.Marks 1986-2006, 20 years of love and friendships’, currently showing at the Nospace Gallery RCA (block D) until April 11th, 2010. Jesper’s photographs, raw, vibrant and spontaneous, capture the turbulence and energy of New York’s East Village. His prints scream ‘whacky’ yet are artful and inspiring. The exhibition is largely composed of portraits of the guests, friends and lovers who passed through Jesper’s apartment in St Marks over a 20- year period. The photographer’s apartment becomes a prism through which we view the microcosm of bohemian life in what was one of the wildest and most avant-garde corners of New York. Jesper’s images are at once intimate, fun, compassionate and at times deeply poignant – with one section devoted to the artist’s ‘departed’ friends. Emphasizing his offbeat visual genre, Jesper, who once worked with Ralph Gibson and has his images on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, has cleverly transformed the NoSpace gallery into an installation for his photographs. The floor is literally tiled with black and white contacts sheets that form a dizzying mosaic of imagery beneath one’s feet. Jesper also chose to dispense with traditional frames for his photographs, instead mounting raw prints on the wall in a way that underscores the directness of his style. Jesper’s show is clearly a work of passion and art. But it is also valuable documentary record of a unique slice of New York life –making it a must-see event for anyone who has an interest in America’s most exciting city. “My apartment became ‘home’ to a kaleidoscope of roommates, visitors, friends, lovers, total strangers and people that just needed a place to crash ... or party,” remembers Haynes. “It also became the place where I photographed – blurring the lines completely between my life and my art. The kitchen was my darkroom and every other corner of my home became an impromptu studio. Nothing was planned. Everything was spontaneous. I just made sure I had a camera in my hand.” It is no coincidence that Jesper now finds himself in Bangkok, where he likens the energy and vibrancy to New York. “I now spend a good part of each year in Bangkok because I find the same excitement and energy here that so inspired me in New York,” he explains.
