Activity Builder Activity Builder The Activity Builder is an easy to use add-on for SMART Notebook that enables you to create matching activities, sorting activities, labeling activities, games and more using your own content. Students will drag an object to a specified location. If the object was dragged to the correct location, the object will disappear or do some other user specified animation. If the object was incorrectly place, it will return to its starting location (or do nothing). Building an Activity 1. Add the desired objects/text to your page 2. Click the add-ons tab on the side tabs (puzzle piece)

Building Notes Multiple object containers can be added to a single page. “Add All Remaining” allows you to add all unassigned, unlocked items to the Accept or Reject box. Useful when working with a large number of objects. If you add an object to the wrong box, simply drag it to the trash can to remove it completely, or drag it to the correct box

Additional Settings By clicking on settings, you can customize the animation action that occurs for accepted or rejected objects. You can also set the object to play a sound that is linked to the object.


Attachments What are Attachments? Attachments allow the user to embed supporting files within a Notebook file. Attachments can include documents, programs, web links, or any other file. Using attachments gives you quick access to supporting files for your lesson and make sharing a lesson in its entirety simple. Attaching a File 1. Click the Attachments tab on the side tabs 2. Click the Insert button

3. Choose the desired attachment option a. Insert Copy of File – creates a copy of the original file and embeds it within the SMART Notebook file b. Insert Hyperlink – creates a shortcut to an Internet website c. Insert Shortcut To File – creates a shortcut to a file on the local computer, similar to a hyperlink Using an Attachment Attachments can be linked to objects on a page or added directly on a Notebook page. Linking to Object 1. Add the attachment to the Notebook file 2. Select the object on the page needing to be linked 3. Click the Object drop-down arrow 4. Click Link 5. Click the “Current Attachments” button 6. Select the desired attachment from the list 7. Choose the “Launch by clicking” option 8. Click OK

Adding Directly to the Page 1. Click the Attachments tab on the side tabs 2. Drag the attachment from the list onto the desired location on the page a. Image attachments will insert as an image b. Documents will insert as a link with the text of the attachment name and Launch by clicking option as being “Corner icon” and will open in their associated program c. Website shortcuts will automatically recognize as being a website to initiate the default web browser with clicked d. Media files will launch and play in the default media player e. Most sound files will play directly within Notebook without opening a third party program

Fill Effects - Solid fill sets the background the chosen color - Gradient fill sets the background as blend of two select colors as a transition from one color to the other o The Style can be set to allow the user to control the direction of the gradient transition - Pattern fill sets the background with one of many different patterns and two chosen colors - Image fill sets the background as an image chosen and inserted by the user (Note: the image inserts based on its currently resolution, small images will tile, large images may not fit completely on the page)

Bluetooth Connection Status Light Indicators Automatic Connection

1. Plug in the power cord to the SMART Board 2. Plug in the USB Bluetooth receiver to the computer a. Due to the size of the receiver, it is recommended to connect the receiver to a USB extension cord which normally comes with the receiver b. If possible, install the receiver in a location difficult to be seen as to avoid potential theft 3. The receiver drivers should install automatically 4. Once the drivers have installed, the Bluetooth transmitter and receiver should synchronize automatically 5. Synchronization is complete when the status light indicator on the right side of the SMART Board frame turns solid green Manual Connection

Bluetooth Receiver and Transmitter

Occasionally the Bluetooth connection will need to be configured manually. This happens for a variety of reasons. 1. On the back of the computer, there should be what looks like a large, gray flash drive with a small, red button on it. Press and hold the red button until the green light starts flashing rapidly. 2. Go to the right side of the SMART Board. There are two green lights. One is visible from the front, on the frame. The other is a small light on the back of the SMART board on a gray box. 3. Near the small light, there is a small, black button. Press and hold this button until it starts flashing rapidly as well. 4. The lights should turn red. Eventually, after 15-45 seconds they should turn solid green (this is the indicator that the Bluetooth in the computer and SMART Board are talking). 5. If the green light is solid, then everything should be functioning properly. 6. If at this time, the green light on the front of the SMART Board is still blinking, you will need to restart your computer.

Indicates SMART Board software is not installed, is corrupt, or connection has been interrupted.

Creative Pen What is the Creative Pen? The Creative Pen allows the user to add a colorful, unique pen to the presentation. There are eight pen styles with the SMART Notebook installation, but with Notebook 11, the user can create their own unique creative pens. Turn on the Creative Pen 1. Click the Pens tool button 2. Click the Pen Types button 3. Click on Creative Pen

Customizing the Toolbar The SMART Notebook toolbar can be customized to fit the user’s needs. Tools not used can be removed, while additional tools can be added for quick access. Customizing the toolbar is done through the Customize the toolbar button on the far right side of the toolbar.

Default Toolbar SMART Notebook Default Toolbar The Notebook software toolbar gives you access to a number of tools to help work and edit a Notebook file. By default, the toolbar appears at the top of the SMART Notebook program. When you are working at the SMART Board and prefer to sit, or are working with young students, it may be more convenient to move the toolbar to the bottom of the page. To do this, press the double-ended, vertical arrow on the far right of the toolbar.

Document Writer SMART Notebook Document Writer Insert screen captures from third-party programs into your Notebook file as images or objects that you can manipulate. Works with any program that allows you to print. Not all programs will support editable objects. Printing to the Document Writer 1. From any program, choose the print command 2. Change the printer to the “SMART Notebook Document Writer”

3. Print 4. When prompted, choose as images or editable objects a. SMART Notebook pages with images – you are unable to edit anything, but the pages look like the original document 5. SMART Notebook pages with editable objects – objects can be edited and manipulated, but might not look exactly like the original

An e-mail will be sent to the e-mail submitted with the product key

Downloading SMART Notebook 1. Go to http://www.smarttech.com 2. Click on the Support link 3. Click on the Software Downloads link 4. Click “Choose a version” in the “SMART Notebook collaborative learning software” 5. Click on the software version desired (usually 11 for Windows) 6. Click on the Download button 7. Fill in the form (you can use your school information on the form) 8. Click Start Download a. Save the file to you computer in a location you will be able to easily locate

Note This is a large file, so it may take a while to download. If you have dial-up internet, you will want to download this file on a computer with a high-speed connection.

Tap the grid to add a point and see the coordinate show up. joliPuzzle – drag an image onto the page to create your puzzle. Set the number of rows and columns to change the difficulty. Measuring Cup – Learn about volume by dragging measuring cups into the large jug and then writing the amount in the space provided to see if you are correct. Money Bar Dollar – Practice adding currency by dragging coins and notes into the money bar, ten write the amount above and see if you are correct. Number Cruncher – Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions using this interactive widget. Periodic Table – An interactive periodic table with images of the elements. Tap to reveal the elements or write an element name into the widget for a quick search.

Random Object Selector – Randomly select items on your SMART Notebook page. Right-angled Triangle – Investigate Pythagorean Theorem using this widget. Slideshow –Allows you to drag & drop images from the notebook page into it & then use swipe gestures back and forth to view the images one at a time. Story Recipe Activity from Movellas (Suggestions) This widget provides suggestions for your own story. Timer (Classic) – Set a time limit for a task or just start timing. Timer (Modern) –Set a time limit for a task or just start timing. Visual Fractions – Write fractions into the widget and then inject an image representing the fraction onto the SMART Notebook page. Voki – The first SMART Notebook 11 widget available on the Exchange. Embed your Voki avatar onto your Notebook page to speak to the audience. Weighing Scales – Practice balancing weights by dragging them to scales. Word Breaker – Split a word into individual letters by typing or dragging a word into the Word Breaker widget.


Extreme Collaboration What is Extreme Collaboration Extreme Collaboration is a SMART Board add-on that allows your students to connect to your SMART Board lessons. Students can use a mobile, web browser enabled device (smart phone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, etc.) to send text messages directly into your SMART Notebook lesson. Additional Gallery Options Additional Gallery options are accessible by selecting an object within the Gallery and then clicking on the drop-down arrow on the selected object. - Insert in Notebook – inserts the selected object onto the current Notebook page - Open Containing Folder – opens the Gallery folder containing the selected object (useful for finding similar objects) - Copy – copy an object from My Content to paste in another location - Paste – paste the contents of the clipboard into My Content as a Gallery Object - Delete – delete the folder/object permanently from the Gallery - Refresh – reloads the active content directory - Rename – change the name of the select object or folder - Add to My Content – adds the currently select object(s) to your My Content - Export as Collection File – allows you to create a single backup file of all Gallery content for the select folder and subfolders - Properties – allows you to add or remove keyword search terms to your objects within My Content


Gallery Objects Searching Gallery What are the Gallery Objects? Gallery Objects are essentially clip art for SMART Notebook. Gallery Objects can be accessed through the Gallery tab. There are a large number of pictures, graphics, precreated pages, backgrounds, and interactive Notebook objects. There are four primary sections of the Gallery Objects.

Four Sections of the Gallery Objects My Content: think of this like your Internet favorites. You can store your personal or favorite gallery objects in this folder for quick access as any time. My Content is specific to the computer, but can be downloaded as a single file for installation on another computer. Gallery Essentials: contains a bulk of the gallery objects. There is a vast array of items available for immediate use within Gallery Essentials. Lesson Activity Toolkit: contains a good number of objects used for making a lesson interactive. Excellent resource for manipulatives teachers use every day in class. Lesson Activity Examples: contains the fundamental tools for every teacher. Subsections Pictures – Standard still frame images and graphics. Interactive and Multimedia – Animated and interactive gallery objects. Contains objects that may be a sound effect, video, or a flash based activity that can be interacted with on the SMART Board. Notebook Files and Pages – Precreated Notebook files and pages similar to a template that allow the user to quickly add a new page to SMART Notebook that has the basic, desired components already added (ex. Graph paper). Backgrounds and Themes – A series of Notebook backgrounds and themes that can be applied to an individual Notebook page or an entire Notebook file. Themes dictate backgrounds as well as font styles and colors similar to a PowerPoint template. Picture

The Gallery helps you quickly develop and deliver lesson activities and presentations in rich graphic detail. Thousands of high-resolution images, audio, video, Flash, and entire Notebook files are organized into searchable collections that allow you to create attractive, reusable content.

Grouping Flipping What is Grouping? Grouping is a way to take multiple objects on a Notebook page and combine them into a single object. This makes it easy to resize objects in direct proportion to each other as well as prevent the accidental dismembering of an object created from multiple parts on the screen. Grouping is done through the object drop-down arrow. With the release of SMART Notebook 11, grouping can also be done through gestures (shaking your hand quickly on the selected objects) on the SMART Board. How to Group 1. 2. 3. 4.

What is Flipping Flipping allows the user to reserve the appearance of an object on a Notebook page. An object can be flipped either Left/Right or Up/Down. This is useful for showing inversions of an object or simply to make a plane appear to be going the opposite direction. How to Flip 1. Click the object you wish to flip 2. Image Transparency What is Image Transparency? Set Image Transparency is an option available on the object drop-down arrow. Transparency allows the user to remove specific parts from an image by making them invisible (transparent). This is a useful feature for removing background colors from an image or an entire object from an image (if the coloring is simple). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Locking What is Locking? Locking is used as a means to prevent a user from accidentally deleting or moving an object from a Notebook page. There are a few different options that can be used when locking an object depending on the user’s needs. How to Lock 1. 2. 3. 4.

Unlocking an Object To unlock an object, click to select the object, click on the padlock in the top-right corner, and click Unlock on the drop-down menu.


Measurement Tools Measurement Tools SMART Notebook gives the user access to the traditional measurement tools of a Ruler, Protractor, Compass, and Geodreieck Protractor for use within SMART Notebook or any other program when using the Transparency view. Ruler Traditional ruler that can be used to measure both inches and centimeters. User can also use the edge draw a straight line.

Protractor Interactive protractor that can be used to measure angles or create custom angles. Outside edge will allow the user to craw an arc with a pen.

Compass Used to create circles and arcs as well as measuring distances between two points. Pen color can be changed through the pen tool properties on the toolbar.

Geodreieck Protractor Primarily used in Germany, this protractor combines the standard compass, a ruler, and a drawing set square.


Microsoft Ink Error Message Error Message

Reason for Error After install SMART Notebook 11 with SP1, this error message has begun to appear on computers. This error message is the result of the Tablet PC Components within Windows 7 not being installed. You will need to install these components to resolve this issue. Follow the steps below.

My Content My Content My Content is a collection of your personal content and objects imported into the SMART Notebook Gallery or your favorite objects added from Gallery.

Adding to My Content To add to My Content, simply drag the desired object to the My Content folder (or subfolder). Content can include text, images, or my other objects. Entire Notebook pages or files can be added to My Content using the “Show additional Gallery actions” button to the right of the Search button. Backing Up My Content Backing up My Content is useful if your computer is going to be erased. You can quickly reimport your content in its entirety with a single file. You can also use the backup to transfer you My Content to another computer or share with someone else. To install on another computer, simply double-click on the resultant export file. 1. Select the Gallery folder or subfolder 2. Click the drop-down arrow on the folder 3. Click Export as Collection File 4. Name and save the file in the desired location

Object Animation What is Object Animation? Object Animation can be used to make objects on a Notebook move across the page or disappear. There are several different effects that can be done. Much like PowerPoint, you can add animations to text and objects to enhance the presentation, draw attention to crucial elements, or simply delay the appearance of an object until you are ready. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

The Object Drop-Down Arrow allows the user to complete several common tasks with only a quick mouse click. Features that can be accessed include: Clone, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Check Spelling, Locking, Grouping, Flip, Order, Infinite Cloner, Link, Sound, and Properties.

Clone Creates an exact copy of the object(s) next to the original object.

Cut, Copy, & Paste Cut removes the selected object(s) from the SMART Notebook page and places it on the clipboard.

Paste places the object from the clipboard onto the page. Grouping Combine two or more objects to act as one object. Select, change, move, delete, and resize a group as a single unit. To edit the objects individually, ungroup them.

Make unlimited copies of an object on a SMART Notebook page. Select and drag the object to create as many clones as required.

Link an object to a website, another page, a file on a computer, or a file residing in the Attachments tab.

Flip Flip an object either horizontally (Left/Right) or vertically (Up/Down).

Order Change the order in which objects are layered. Choose between: -

On-Screen Keyboard On-Screen Keyboard The On-Screen Keyboard gives the user the ability to type keyboard characters onto the screen while at the SMART Board. This will save the user time by not having to go back to the computer to type. The on-screen keyboard is very useful for typing short phrases or websites. Types of Keyboards There are six types of on-screen keyboards that available for use. Switching between the keyboards can be done quickly through the on-screen keyboard drop-down command. - Classic – traditional QWERTY keyboard - Number Pad – a keyboard made up of the traditional 10-key pad of a keyboard with a few additional symbols - Write – a handwriting recognition strip that will convert handwriting to text and insert the text into the active textbox on the computer - Shortcut – gives the user access to commands such as Ctrl, Alt, and Esc as well as provides a short writing strip - Simple – displays lowercase letters in alphabetic order and the numbers is 0-9 format for users unfamiliar with the layout of a traditional keyboard - Simple Caps – displays capitalized letters in alphabetic order and the numbers is 0-9 format for users unfamiliar with the layout of a traditional keyboard Classic Number Pad

Ordering What is Ordering? Ordering is used for changing the layer position of objects on a page. When an object is inserted on a page, it is by default, on top of everything else on the page. Normally not an issue, but perhaps you’ve typed all the necessary text onto your page first, then went back to add color and images to page. To place the objects behind the text, you will need to adjust the order. How to Change the Order of an Object 1. Select the object that needs to change order position 2. Page Recording What is Page Recording? Page Recording allows the user to record the actions done on a SMART Notebook page and play them back through a control bar inserted on the page. This is a great feature to help the teacher avoid having to write the same concepts repeatedly over the course of the day. The teacher can record the instruction during their first class period and replay the same content throughout the day shown the exact same way from period to period. Using Page Recording 1. Click the Properties tab on the side tabs 2. If necessary, click on Page Recording button 3. Click on “Start Recording”

Page Sorter Drop-Down Arrow Page Sorter Drop-Down Arrow Gives the user fast access to several page commands. The page sorter drop-down is available for the currently active page. If multiple pages are selected, most commands will affect all selected pages. Be sure only the correct page(s) are selected when using these commands.

For the 500 & 600 series SMART Boards (refer to SMART Board serial number to determine model series – i.e. SB685-xxxxxxxx indicates 600 series), the pens are nothing more than a piece of plastic. When a pen is removed from the tray, a sensor in the tray tells the computer which pen has been picked up and the computer will activate that pen color.

For the 800 series, the pens have sensors built into the pen to help the board recognize actions. The four traditional colors are activated by pressing the corresponding color button on the pen tray.

Pin Page Dual Page Mode What is Pin Page? Pin Page, used in Dual Page mode, is a useful feature that allows you to keep a single Notebook page displayed on the screen while still being able to navigate through the other pages of the Notebook file. Click the Page Sorter tab to allow you to see a thumbnail image of each page in the Notebook file, navigate to a different page, create page groups or reorder the pages. Turn on SMART Ink – disables SMART Ink for current program. SMART pens will act like a mouse cursor. They will not draw within the active program. Select – activates the mouse cursor even if a pen is currently out of the pen tray. Pen – activates the desired pen color and thickness. Any object contacting the SMART Board will serve as a drawing tool. Calligraphic Ink – converts the pen tool to write in calligraphy type style Highlighter – allows you to write with a highlighter in the currently program. Screen Shade Just like putting a piece of paper on the overhead transparency projector. The Screen Shade places a gray box over all programs currently open on the computer. Handles on all four edges allow for the screen shade to reveal only what the user wants shown.

Spotlight Blacks out the screen except for the user designated spotlight area. The spotlight can be used to show only the portions of the computer screen that the user wants.

Magnifier Can be used to increase the size of text or images on the screen. The active magnifier window allows the user to navigate to various parts of the page and change the amount of magnification.

Calculator Opens the calculator for the operating system (i.e. Windows Calculator).

Pointer Allows the user to insert arrows that can be dragged & dropped to a location on the screen to point out specific items. Direction of the pointer depends on the direction the mouse was going at the time the arrow is dropped. To remove a pointer from the screen, right-click on it.

Screen Capture Toolbar Allows the user to capture portions of the screen for use within SMART Notebook or other program. SMART Notebook automatically opens when any of the Screen Capture Toolbar tools are used, but the image captured can be pasted into any program.

Recorder A simple program that allows the user to do to screencast of their computer. With a microphone attached the recording with capture audio as well.

Video Player Allows the user to play a video and be able to interact with the video using SMART pens and capture images from the video including any writing done with the pens.

When adding a sound the whole object, it is beneficial to have the object in its final place before adding the sound. After a sound has been added to the whole object, you will have to go through a couple extra steps to reposition the object at a later time. Title

Formatting Tables Object Drop-Down Options Most of the options on the object drop-down arrow are the same with any Notebook object, however, there are three additional options for tables. Add Table Shade – adds a removable shade to each cell of the table. Click on the cell to reveal the contents of the cell. Similar to the screen shade, but only for table cells. Remove Table Shade – removes the table shade from all cells. Adjust Size – allows for automatic adjustments of the table based on the following options: - Make same height – makes all rows of the table the same height. - Make same width – makes all columns of table the same width. - Make same size – makes all columns and rows the same size based on current size of the table. - Make cells square – makes all cells square in shape based on the largest width or height of existing cells. Inserting Tables Adding Content to Table Inserting a Table Tables are an easy to organize data on a page. Tables can also be used for interactive activities such as sorting, organizing, questioning, and simple game design. Inserting a Table (Menu Command) 1. Click the Insert menu 2. Click on Table 3. Resizing the Table Resizing table cells can be done by placing the mouse cursor on the gridlines between cells. The cursor will change to a double-headed arrow. Click and hold the mouse, then drag to desired size.

Resizing Handle Using the resize handle in the bottom-right corner allows the table to be resized in its entirety while maintaining current proportions.

Moving a Table Moving a table is done through the move table handle (gray square) on the top-left corner of the table. If the handle is not visible, the entire table needs to be selected in order to show the move handle.

Adding Content to Cells Cell content can consist of text as well as images. - Click on the desired cell, then type the necessary text. - Drag and drop objects or text from outside the table into the desired cell. If the cell already has content, the new object will replace the existing object.
