From The Desk Of... Rabbi Marci R. Bloch

rabbibloch@cbiboca.org A few months ago one of my friends bought me a new pair of earrings. It wasn’t my birthday, my anniversary or a special day. I asked her what the occasion was and she said, “Just because.” I asked myself, “Just because?” I tried to think about what prompted her to do such a kind act. What had happened in our relationship that caused this action? . . . and then I realized maybe it was “just because.” How many of us have ever received a gift “just because?” Doesn’t it feel amazing? Doesn’t it make you feel so touched, moved, appreciated, loved, cared for—you name it! Gifts “just because” give us a sense of joy and help us feel a sense of closeness with another person. The ancient rabbis must have really understood the concept of “just because” because they instituted into the holiday of Purim the notion of mishloach manot. Mishloach Manot literally means to send gifts. On Purim it is a mitzvah to send to at least one person (even an acquaintance or a stranger) a gift with at least two different ready-to-eat food items. We give these gifts to others to emphasize the importance of friendship and community. At the end of the Book of Esther it states: “Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the 14th of the month of Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and of sending portions to one another.” From this text, the rabbis formed the laws of mishloach manot. The rabbis understood that a little gift could bring a great deal of peace between people, and create a sense of unity amongst the Jewish people, which is exactly opposite of what the evil man, Haman, declared about us in the Purim story. So this Purim I ask you to give a gift of food or candy just because…just because it may brighten someone’s day…lift up someone whose heart is aching...or make someone feel appreciated or loved or noticed. This mitzvah of giving little gifts may not seem like a big deal, but these little acts of kindness can foster more love and harmony between people, which ultimately can change our world. Chag Sameach, Rabbi Bloch

Tu B'Shevat in the Park

On February 4, our preschool enjoyed a CBI/PJ Library event at Patch Reef Park with Rabbi Marci Bloch in celebration of Tu B'Shevat, a Jewish holiday occurring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat. It is also called "Rosh HaShanah La'Ilanot," literally "New Year of the Trees." In contemporary Israel, the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration. Over 100 parents and children attended this event, hearing great stories, singing, planting, doing crafts and having lots of fun.

From The Desk Of... Gary Weiner President, Board of Trustees gary@cbiboca.org

FriendsIf someone asked you why you belong to Congregation B’nai Israel, how would you respond? Have you truly ever given that question any thought? Did you become a member as a result of your children attending our pre-school? Did you have friends here with whom you wanted to share the synagogue experience? Were you unhappy with how you were treated at another synagogue and feel more valued here at CBI? Do you connect to the warmth and “Hamish” energy of our worship services? Do you embrace our mission to be an INCLUSIVE Jewish community where one’s gender is not a relevant consideration in the exercise of creating a Jewish household and raising Jewish children? Where our clergy and lay leaders understand that love and commitment to living a life grounded in Jewish principles, are the truest measure of one’s contribution to the greater synagogue community? In my role here at CBI, I sometimes get so caught up in the daily, and if I’m being honest, sometimes aggravating minutiae, that I forget what brought me and Vicky here in the first place and what has kept us here all these years. For us, it’s the inspiration we derive from being part of a synagogue community that positively impacts the lives of others, Jews and non-Jews alike. It’s hoping that in some small way we have made a difference and maybe even inspired others to do the same. Sharing that journey with dear friends here at CBI, has been a gift beyond measure. So, as we continue to celebrate our 30th anniversary, ask yourselves why YOU are members of this holy congregation. If you have drifted away from active participation, please, come back because we need you and value your experience. If you are new to the congregation and feel unsure of where you fit in, the staff, clergy and lay leaders are a phone call away to offer guidance and support. Re-prioritize our synagogue in your lives by making your membership a verb and I promise you will find reward, love and friendships that only CBI can provide. Best, Gary

How did the son of a Nazi tank commander embark on a journey that not only took him to Israel but also inspired his conversion to Judaism? Cbi Talks...NAGLE FAMILY Jewish Film Festival Thursday, March 12, 7:00 pm VIP Cocktail Lounge

Portrait of Wally

Save the Date: Thursday, April 16 Rabbi Bloch will lead the discussion.

Running time 90 minutes. Barrie Brett will lead the discussion. Egon Schiele’s tender picture of his mistress, Walburga (“Wally”) Neuzil, is the pride of the Leopold Museum in Vienna. But for 13 years the painting was locked up in New York, caught in a legal battle between the Austrian museum and the Jewish family from whom the Nazis seized the painting in 1939.

This film traces the history of this iconic image – from Schiele’s gesture of affection toward his young lover, to the theft of the painting from Lea Bondi, a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life, to the post-war confusion and subterfuge that evoke the surprise resurfacing of “Wally” on loan to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan in 1997.

The “Wally” case brought the story of Nazi art loot into the open, eventually forcing museums in Europe and the U.S. to search their own collections for suspect objects. No cost to members. $10 per person for non-members. Tickets will be available at the door. Sponsored by the Nagle Family. 10

A

ndrea, Jeffrey, Alyson and Douglas have been shipping holiday packages, including a letter from our clergy along with holiday cards, to Jewish military overseas on Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Chanukah for the past 14 years. Packages have been sent to the Navy, Army, Marines and Air Force in Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, Japan, bases in the U. S. and other locations throughout the world as a way of saying "Thank you for your service to our country." Congregation B’nai Israel members and SLJ students have been very generous in their donations of food and cash to help pay for the items and shipping. It is very rewarding to receive photos of the Passover Seders conducted with the food we have donated. CBIis very fortunate to have this dedicated family be an integral part of our congregation.

About Jill Forst

T

here are many hidden treasures here at CBI. One of them happens to have been tucked away in the preschool office for the last 15 years. Her name is Jill Forst. Jill, an Administrative Specialist, is so much more than what her title suggests. Jill joined CBI in 1988 and was a part of many firsts. Her daughter Cara was in the very first preschool class. Jill was one of the first co-presidents of the Parent Organization. Jill was on the first committee to chair Chanukarama and was also a member of the committee that hired Linda Harris. Jill was one of the first creators of Shelanu and designed it for many years, along with many years of ad journals and directories. Jill was a member of the Board of Trustees and a Sisterhood Board President. All three of Jill’s children, Adam, Brian and Cara, became B’nai Mitzvah at CBI and 2 were confirmed. When Jill’s husband Mark became ill, her family was one of the first to receive assistance through Ezrat Am. CBI members came to visit Mark and Jill at the hospital, they started a food chain to make sure that her children were fed when they were in New York for treatment, and after Mark passed away, Linda suggested Jill come and work at the preschool office…the rest is history. Thank you Jill for all that you do!

ANNUAL INTERFAITH SERVICE HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

On Sunday, January 18, CBI once again joined our friends at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church for the annual interfaith service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Participating in the service were Reverend Winston Anderson and Rabbi Robert A. Silvers, The Cantor’s Chantors and B’nai Big Beat Band, led by Cantor Stephanie Shore. Approximately 100 congregants attended this service, filling the church with song and enthusiasm. To view more photos of this event, go to www.cbiboca.org/mlkpix.

The Sandwich Brigade

This Kantor Family Center for Justice community outreach program has been making PB&J Sandwiches for CROS Ministries Caring Kitchen Afterschool Snack Program for over 20 years. Every week, hundreds of sandwiches are made by our dedicated volunteers and have become an essential part of the children’s day at afterschool programs throughout Palm Beach County. Student performance in school has greatly improved, and disciplinary issues have dropped dramatically— mainly due to a simple sandwich. Todah Rabah to our amazing CBI Sandwich Brigade that meets every Wednesday to perform this wonderful Mitzvah! If you would like be part of this program or any of our community outreach initiatives contact Minda Shaiman at minda@cbiboca.org or 241-8118.

passover at congregation b'nai israel Passover Services:

Friday, April 3, 10:00 am *Siyyum B'chorim (Service for the First Born) Hollander Family Chapel Tradition obligates first-born Jews to fast prior to the eve of Passover in gratitude for surviving the tenth plague. The fast may be broken by attending a "siyyum" or "conclusion" of a tractate of Talmud. Our version of this custom consists of a brief morning service, a teaching by Rabbi Robert A. Silvers about Pesach, and a bagel and coffee nosh, to which everyone is invited, including non-first-borns! Saturday, April 4, 10:00 am Passover Day 1 Friday, April 10, 10:00 am Passover Day 7/Yizkor Service Both services in the Cohen/Freidkin Sanctuary. Cantor's Chantors will participate.

Passover Chesed Appeal

We are asking for a donation from each CBI family who can afford to do so, in order to help CBI build its Chesed Fund. CBI’s Chesed Fund is used to give financial assistance to many of our families who otherwise may not be able to become members of our wonderful synagogue. We are requesting a contribution of $100 from each family. If you can give more, your additional tzedakah will help offset those families who cannot participate in this appeal or are able to contribute less. If you cannot make a commitment of $100, then whatever you can contribute will be more than just appreciated—it will help. Chag Pesach Sameach! If you have any questions, please contact Pam DiGiacomo at 241-8118 or pam@cbiboca.org You may also make your donation using your credit card online at cbiboca.org/passoverappeal
