Dear Chamber Members, First of all, thank you so much for the calls, letters, messages, gifts - I am overwhelmed by the amount of support that I have received during my transition into the Executive Director role here at the Chamber. As a membership organization, I know ultimately, we work for you! I always want to hear our members’ concerns and what they need from us. Given that, I am currently reviewing our committees to restructure and refocus them to better meet the needs of our membership. We are also evaluating our current programs and events, and looking at ways to better enhance the benefits of chamber membership to give you the most for your investment!

5 Ways to Tell If You're Doing Social Media Right Some entrepreneurs are complete naturals when it comes to 3. Are you being mentioned more? expressing themselves through social media, but some people I’m not just talking about being tagged on Facebook or Twitter need a little help to put themselves out there and reap the here, but being talked about in blog posts or articles people rewards that digital has to offer them. are inspired to write as a result of something you have said or shared. I regularly check search results on Google or Bing for When we do personal branding work with company clients, mentions of my name in relation to articles. Recently I found a they often ask how they'll know whether they are doing the mention in a discussion on the number on the "HR" group on right thing. Quite rightly, they’re wondering how they measure LinkedIn, which led to a meeting with the author to discuss the success of the time and effort they’re putting into their potential partnerships. personal brands and social engagement. Here are five criteria we give that will help them -- and you -understand if you're doing social media right:

1. Do you keep to the plan? With any marketing effort, there has to be a plan, right? That plan’s going to include a mission and vision statement, an overall strategy and a set of tactics to execute. Just as any business' marketing department will do, you should set aside time for regular check-ins regarding the plan for your personal use of social media. Check to see if you’re sticking to it, are behind the communication cadence or need to slow down a bit.

4. Are you being invited to real-world events? Having digital influence is only one part of the project. You want those social connections across your channels to strike up real-world mind meetings that translate into fruitful partnership or business opportunities, if you're disciplined about your approach to your personal brand and are genuinely demonstrating expertise in a relevant and authentic way, then you should see an increase in requests to meet in person or speak at conferences and networking events.

5. Are you having fun?

Authenticity has been mentioned repeatedly here, and it's important to reiterate that an effective personal brand is one that exudes the truth about you not only as a professional but also as a person. Looking like you're enjoying what you do, both in person and online, can be infectious and inspirational to a loyal following, so it's important to have a bit of fun while executing on your personal marketing plan. Otherwise, 2. Are you seeing an increase in engagement? you're why bother? Measuring your success on social media is If you’re doing a good job sharing your own or others’ content, hugely important, as there is no difference between you should see a hike in engagement through an increase in calculating the ROI of your company marketing plan and followers, more responses and shares of what you are gauging how well your own personal branding efforts are sharing, plus an uptick in the reach of what you’re sharing being received. across your social media channels. The art here is to try to amplify the authentic content that’s useful to your audience An increase in followers should not necessarily be your and watch it be amplified further by those with whom it number one goal. It's the quality and consistency of resonates best. engagement and the resulting ripple effect into other areas of your professional life.

5 Things to Look for in Your Next Incredible Mentor Ask the most successful people you know how they got where they are and they'll likely mention at least one mentor who helped them along the way. Whether you're on the giving or receiving end of an investment of time, energy and advice, it's important to see mentoring for what it is: A priceless gift. That's according to Steve Pogorzelski, CEO of Avention, a Concord, Massachusetts-based sales enablement and business information solutions provider. Whether you want to be a good mentor or find one who will help you get to the next level, here's what he says you need to know about the best mentoring relationships.

Many people say they want a mentor, when really they just want attention and strokes, not necessarily the kind of constructive feedback that results in personal and professional growth. "If you look at, for example, the greatest athletes, entrepreneurs, investors, they all eagerly accepted coaching or had great mentors," Pogorzelski says. "To me, those types of people, their curiosity and their self-awareness and their desire to be better drove them to seek people who could help them do that."

And relationship is what keeps a mentor-mentee relationship working. Once it becomes obligatory, the benefit to both individuals quickly dissipates. "Relationships diminish over time because it's a check-the-box corporate exercise," he says.

Pogorzelski says people come into his office and want advice or feedback. "And I'll say, 'I'm going to hurt you. If you really want it, you're gonna get hurt right now. I'm only doing it because it's in your best interest, but you have to be ready to take it,'" he says.

Aligning yourself with someone because of his or her title or for political gain is the worst idea, Pogorzelski says. Don't have a wise person you admire in your life? Start hanging out Good mentors help people grow through frank conversations at industry or incubator events and widen your pool of that may be difficult to have. Mentoring managers, for associations. Meet A Member Jordan Hereford Owner Ambassador Bar www.theambassadorbar.com/

Give us a brief description/history of your business….

Q: OK, now the good stuff. What do you like to do for fun?

A spin on classic cocktails with unique and trending beer.

I love to travel, go camping, go to concerts, work out, paint, draw and read up on EVERYTHING. Have you seen my Facebook posts?

We just opened in August so there's not much of a history... yet!

Q: What’s your favorite movie and why? Q: How did you get started in your field? Trick question, there's no such thing as a favorite movie. My dream of chasing Broadway fizzled out so I took up bartending. (I'm kidding) .

Q: Is your desk messy or organized?

I was back in college in the medical field when an opportunity came up to purchase a bar. I know every angle of the business. I was a dishwasher, cook, bouncer, server, bartender and a manager; so I went for it.

Well, my car is my office and if you have seen my car you would know it's a mess.

Q: Who is the one person that helped to make you who you are today?

Packers, duh.

Q: Green Bay Packers or another team?

Q: Where was your best vacation and why? My wife, Amanda and my dog (son) Axel. Your outlook on life changes when you have people who depend on and believe in The El Dorado Casitas in Riviera Maya Mexico. I got married you. there last May. Q: What do you like most about working in the Heart of the Valley area? Most people in the Heart of the Valley are genuine in nature, have good hearts and are hard working around here. I'm happy to call this place my home.

Q: What are the Top 3 items on your bucket list? 1.) Travel the world. 2.) Outrun the ocean. 3.) Open a classical cocktails bar (check!)

Q: What is the worst job you’ve ever had? A desk job.

"If regional businesses are interested in growth, I would highly recommend getting involved in the Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a fantastic local resource and the people there make it easy. There are so many opportunities available, from events, to committees to networking. Get involved and you will see results." -Mike Waters, Nicolet Bank

"The Heart of the Valley Chamber sets itself apart from the other area Chamber of Commerce’s by the staff above and beyond the status quo to help all members. Since joining the Chamber, we’re very proud of earning the Heart of the Valley Chamber “Emerging Enterprise” award in 2013. Also, with the majority of our clients being in the Fox Valley, it’s been great to work the Heart of the Valley Chamber to help other businesses as well as our own. Time is money and having that regional reach with one organization as opposed to having to be in numerous Chambers to get the same reach is a huge advantage. We try to give back and provide value to Chamber members through Lunch and Learns and various teaching opportunities. I recommend the Heart of the Valley Chamber to all my business associates! - Aaron Baer, Baer Performance Marketing
