COMMITMENT TO CITIZENSHIP

A small school with small classes offers a unique opportunity to be sure that we tailor the teaching to the individual. Our teachers differentiate their lessons so that the most advanced student can have extra challenge, while a student who is struggling with a new skill can get repetition necessary for mastery. We are a school that believes that emotional intelligence can be taught and we help students learn the interpersonal skills that lead to success. This is where one-on-one is so important. There is a reason why the small school movement is so important. We help individual students find their voice as they learn to investigate, reason, communicate, and find themselves engaged in the valuable enterprise of collaboration. Marymount keeps a healthy balance between commitment to something “larger than oneself” while enabling individuals to flourish using their unique potential.

students learn leadership on campus first, and as they grow and mature they are confident crossing borders. Watching our 7th and 8th Graders exchange ideas with students in Costa Rica gives us confidence that our students are dedicated to more than themselves. At Marymount, we don’t teach students what to think.

OF PLACE

We have a commitment to “A Sense of Place.” The Marymount campus is not only an awe-inspiring beautiful place, it is also a welcoming and rich environment for young people. We want our school to be a second home for our students and parents. Marymount’s campus is most welcoming and reassuring. Students jump out of their cars in the morning with smiles on their faces because the setting brings all of us joy. It inspires students and faculty to want to be here, and more importantly, to be a member of the community. Where we are from matters; it has

since the beginning of time. Marymount is not just where you go to school, it is who you are. 5

HEART

Our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders attended an Opera Lab in Battistone Hall. Five professional opera singers not only sang for our students, they also engaged them in discussion, and ultimately created and performed an impromptu opera. The voices of these opera singers shook the walls and amazed our students. The students could understand opera even when the languages were French, Italian, and Spanish (our students who know French, Italian, and Spanish took the singers by surprise!), because they are well versed in singing, acting, and understanding the language of music and theater—thanks in part to Mr. Laezer and Ms. Kennedy. Most of all, I am proud that our students would be so keen on engaging in conversation, asking intelligent questions, and focusing on this art. I do not know who was more moved, our students or our visiting opera group. - Andrew Wooden

On a recent tour of the campus with the Head of School, I was amazed and very impressed with the amount of improvements that have taken place in the short time that Mr. Wooden has been at Marymount. It is that kind of dedication, not only of the Head of School, but the staff and teachers also, that has me convinced Mike Timm Marymount is the best school in Santa Barbara for my grandchildren.

Marymount...

the way learning should be

Building on a 75-year tradition of excellence, the educators at Marymount have crafted a unique learning experience that blends mastery of core subjects with acquisition of essential skills students need to navigate and be successful in a rapidly evolving world. At its heart, a Marymount education is student-centered. In every level—from Junior Kindergarten to Eighth Grade— Marymount students learn and grow in respectful, encouraging, and safe surroundings. A student-to-teacher ratio of eight-toone, individualized attention, careful monitoring of progress, and consistent communication with parents ensures that each student’s needs and aptitudes are recognized and addressed. In the classroom, Marymount teachers utilize a well-thoughtout, inquiry-based approach that compels students to participate in their own learning process. They become adept at converting information into knowledge, and knowledge into understanding. Time and again, research has proven that this invaluable skill is the foundation for high levels of achievement in high school, college, and career. In many ways, the ingredients for success remain unchanged— resilience, determination, adaptability, and a solid grasp of the basics. But in today’s world, our children also must know how to work smarter and solve multi-faceted problems. They will have to utilize technology effectively, express themselves with clarity and eloquence, and collaborate in pursuit of common goals. It is precisely this set of 21st Century skills that Marymount’s learning environment has been designed to impart. The outstanding record of accomplishment by our graduates is a testament to its efficacy. Marymount Angel Terrace 16

Mustang Golf Invitational Thank you to everyone who participated in the 5th Annual Marymount Mustang Golf Invitational on September 30, 2011. We are thrilled to report we raised $40,000, our highest amount for our tournament! We had an amazing turnout of 91 golfers including many first timers to the game who didn't know golf could be this fun. The weather was perfect and the laughter on the golf course audible as the community came out to support Marymount Athletic Programs. The many people who put this together and the gracious sponsors and friends who sponsored the tournament, purchased tee signs, donated delicious snacks and drinks, donated their valuable time to make sure that everything ran smoothly, and came out and played deserve a special shout out much louder than a standard "golf clap." Thank you for supporting Marymount’s physical education programs and our outstanding athletics.

growing the Marymount COMMUNITY

Anything we’ve ever done for Marymount has been a privilege and a joy.

The entire Marymount community has made our Marymount experience and our move to Santa Barbara the happiest years of our lives.

Connectivism is the seventh and last of the National Association of Indendent School’s critical skills for the 21st Century and perhaps the most elusive to understand. In the words of John Martin, connectivism is “the power of networks and all that they can do to advance each of us individually and as groups.” 2011-2012 improvements in connectivism were felt throughout Marymount. The MPC (Marymount Parent Council) has long been the heart of Marymount and oversees vital school programs like the Room Parent Program, the Hot Lunch Program and countless beloved community events. In addition to being more organized and professional than ever before in 2011-2012, the MPC printed “An Insider’s Guide to Marymount”, a guide for new school families Community Day 28

to help them get oriented and feel connected to the Marymount community in record time. School Events such as the Annual Open House experienced increased attendance and public interest and were highly effective in connecting more of the Santa Barbara community to Marymount. School technology improvements, equipment and faculty training are “connecting” the Marymount community in new and faster ways.

I know I speak for the entire Board of Trustees when I say that I am extremely proud of the work accomplished at Marymount in 2011-2012. While it is vital for Marymount’s success that striving to improve remain constant, the Annual Report is an opportunity to take stock of the accomplishments Marymount has achieved and to celebrate the benefits of being a part of Marymount, a school that provides an extraordinary learning environment for students, work environment for faculty and staff, and community for families.

More alumni than ever before stay connected to Marymount through Facebook and school communications. Hilary Doubleday 29
