Saving the life of a child. That is what JAFCO is about. 18 Years of saving lives–3,530 lives. What does that mean for our community? Emergency Shelter Program..... In our it means that 598 children age birth to 12 who were removed from their homes in the middle of the night, often by the police due to abuse and neglect after watching the arrest of their parents – were brought to the safety, warmth and love of the beautiful Marsh Children’s Center – JAFCO’s Emergency Shelter. Many were removed due to deplorable conditions, no lights, no running water, no food, no clean bed to sleep in, sometimes no bed at all. No shoes or clean clothes to go to school and so often they missed school for weeks at a time. No doctor’s appointments or dental checkup, sometimes for years. Within 24 hours of arriving at JAFCO, all of that changes, and the smiles and the laughter returns. The children go to sleep each night with clean pajamas and sheets, with a full tummy from a great dinner topped off with a bedtime snack, with a loving JAFCO staff member awake and right outside their bedroom door all night, to keep the nightmares away. Foster Care and Adoption Program..... In our it means that 230 children ages birth to 18, have lived in a JAFCO foster home and 212 have been adopted through JAFCO’s foster care and adoption program, experiencing the love and safety of a family for the very first time. JAFCO provides ongoing support to our adoptive families throughout the child’s life, assisting the family wherever we can with emotional, behavioral and educational issues which are not uncommon with abused children. In our Family Preservation Program..... it means that over 2000 children age birth to 18 were able to remain with their families, who although fragile, were willing to accept the support of JAFCO to help strengthen the family unit and allow the child to remain at home with services wrapped around the family for safety and support-always our number one goal and with an 85% success rate in keeping families together. JAFCO.....means safety, love and hope All of our children are alive, unlike the tragic fate of many children in our community who we have watched recently on the news. At JAFCO, they have had every opportunity that every child should have to live and grow with safety and love. At first the abuse and neglect they suffered affected them severely and they struggled with issues of trust and healthy choices. But with time, most have seen the beauty that life has to offer and they have embraced it with open arms and a full heart. JAFCO 2 JOURNAL Group Home Program..... In our it means that 106 children have lived in one of the six group homes, some for as long as 5 years, children ages 6 to 21, children for whom there was no family member or foster or adoptive family. All were struggling to heal from the trauma they had suffered - the abuse, the neglect, the abandonment. 100% of children who turn 12 or 13 have joined generations before them in the ritual of Bar and Bat Mitzvah followed by the most fabulous party imaginable! 100% of the children were exposed to the arts at their first concert or theater production, experienced their first birthday party complete with a cake, presents and decorations, their first Chanukah wish list come true, their first family vacation, their first experience at summer day camp or overnight camp. 100% of the children who were of age graduated high school and went on to 4 year universities, community or vocational college, several are getting ready to graduate college in the coming year, planning their lives around careers that include medicine, finance, law enforcement, hospitality, music, social work, law and education. 100% received therapy and it is our hope that the cycle of abuse will end with them. 2010 FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE EXPENSES REVENUE Group Home Program..............................$ 1,680,000 Private Foundations/Grants......................$ 1,654,000 Family Preservation Program....................$ 975,000 Special Events, Fundraising.......................$ 860,000 Children’s Emergency Shelter....................$ 584,000 Government Funding................................$ 636,000 Administration .........................................$ 538,000 General Contributions...............................$ 600,000 Independent Living Program.....................$ 265,000 Children’s Services Council of Broward.....$ 437,000 Foster Care/Adoption Program.................$ 147,000 Jewish Federation of Broward County.......$ 55,000 Developmental Disabilities Program..........$ 85,000 TOTAL REVENUE........................... $ 4,242,000 TOTAL EXPENSES.......................... $ 4,274,000 Net Revenue over Expenses.................. $ (32,000) 87 cents of every dollar you donate goes directly to the children. Presenting the JAFCO Godparent Circle To be asked to be the Godparent for a child is one of the greatest honors in life. The children of JAFCO are asking you to become their Godparent. JAFCO Godparents spiritually adopt an abused child to ensure that they have everything they need. As a Godparent you welcome the child to the beauty of the world and to Judaism. The JAFCO Godparent Circle has been created to ensure that every JAFCO child will have a wonderful life filled with every opportunity that our own children have. JAFCO Godparents make a commitment to support the children of JAFCO for ten years with a gift of less than $5 a day or $1,800 a year. Two special gold pins have been created featuring the JAFCO logo which symbolizes our mission - a child swinging joyously on the tree of life. The woman’s pin features a moveable swing with either a boy or a girl on the swing and can also be worn on a necklace. The man’s lapel pin is black onyx with gold inlay. Godparents recommitting for a second ten years receive a silver candle holder created exclusively for JAFCO by world renowned artist Yaacov Heller. Becoming a Godparent - it is about saving the lives of an entire generation of children who need your protection. Since it is the perfect birthday or anniversary gift, you can become a Godparent at any time of the year and it would be our honor to pin you at one of our JAFCO events. Your name will join our wall of honor at the JAFCO Jewish Children’s Village. memory HV second generation re-committed Godparents JAFCO Respite And Family Resource Center For Children With Developmental Disabilities Sam And Adele Borger Campus David Posnack Jewish Children’s Center Steve And Helene Weicholz Children’s Lodge Project Update Our capital campaign now stands at $8 million. Naming opportunities are available and your support is urgently needed to allow us to complete this project as soon as possible. Over the next 3-6 months we will be hiring a general contractor to begin the first phase of construction. Our developmental disabilities family preservation program is in its second year of operation providing in-home counseling, support groups case management and referral and 24 hour on call emergency support to 50 families. The Need Front Entrance The number of children being diagnosed with a developmental disability (1 in 10 children) is growing steadily, but this is not true of the support available to families who often feel alone as they face the sometimes overwhelming challenge of raising a child with a developmental disability including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability, Spina Bifida and Prader Willi. Autism numbers are rising as well with some reports claiming one out of every 100 children will be diagnosed with Autism. Couples raising a special needs child are facing overwhelming stressors that can threaten their marriage. While the cause of many of these disabilities remains unknown, JAFCO, in keeping with our commitment to support families in our community, is building a new exciting state-of-the- art center - The JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Center, the first of its kind in the country. Children’s Socialization, Recreation and Therapeutic Activities Beginning with that frightening and often devastating moment of diagnosis, JAFCO social workers and therapists will be available around the clock to guide families every step of the way with case management and referrals for medical care, education and all possible therapies including speech, physical, occupational, play, art, music and biofeedback therapy. Our Fitness and Fun Gym, Computer Wiz Lab, Music and Drama Studio and Creative Arts Studio will provide a safe and fun indoor experience for the children. Outdoors, our Splash Zone Playground, Basketball Court, Nature Trail, Petting Zoo, Butterfly and Hummingbird and Organic Vegetable Gardens will be available to enhance the lives of the children in a safe, protective environment. To learn to become more independent, children will learn to cook, do laundry, shop at the lodge store in our Daily Living Skills Training Environment. Family Support/Extended Respite Care As the children get more comfortable with the center and staff over time, they will then feel more comfortable coming for their two week “vacation” at the lodge in one of the three beautiful 5,000 square foot guest homes, thereby allowing parents to take a long overdue cruise, vacation or maybe attend a family wedding or other function that might not otherwise be possible. On-site weekend family trainings will also take place in the guest homes with experts coming on site to train parents in the newest research based behavior management techniques that have been proven to work with children with developmental disabilities. For Wendy Berkowitz, these milestones meant something different. These moments were a long time in the making. A resident of Broward County, Berkowitz, 52 who divorced in her 30’s longed to be a mother and didn’t want the experience to pass her by, so she took matters into her own hands. Her mother, a member of the Kings Point Chapter of Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options (JAFCO), would constantly share the touching stories of the children of JAFCO. After much thought and consideration, Berkowitz decided she would become a foster mother. JAFCO holds a monthly introduction/ informational meeting for those who are interested in foster care and adoption. From there, potential foster/adoptive parents attend an intensive eight-week training program. The training identifies and trains participants on how to care for abused and neglected children. It also provides potential parents with all the necessary requirements needed to legally become a foster/adoptive parent. Some of these requirements include family consultations, criminal and financial background checks, home inspections, and physical and psychological examinations. Foster Care Licensing Specialist, Rebecca Salus said that out of the 25 initial participants, each step of the training process self-selects out more and more candidates until the ones who show the most commitment are left. For Berkowitz, her journey began in 2005, right when Hurricane Wilma hit, delaying her training until January 2006. After she turned in her paperwork, she was licensed in May of the same year and immediately become a foster parent to a baby girl. JAFCO’s primary goal is to reunite children with their birth parents. This makes it bittersweet for a foster care parent. It is an achievement to have a child returned to their birth parent, but on the other hand foster parents are forced to part with a child they have bonded with. “It gets really tough because you become attached to the child. But at the end of the day you have to do what’s best for the child, not what’s best for you,” said Berkowitz. In 2009 Berkowitz became a foster parent to a red-headed blue-eyed girl named Bree. “She was born in the back of a Winnebago while the mother was doing drugs,” Berkowitz said. “She cried nonstop for six months of her life. It seemed like everything bothered her.” With the support of her own mother, sister, friends and especially JAFCO, Berkowitz triumphed and finally adopted Bree in September. “JAFCO was my biggest supporter. The best part of JAFCO is the fact that I have met other parents who have been through the same process I have been through.” JAFCO provides complete case management services for children and 24-hour on-call support to foster families. “Once the child is placed into a home, we don’t close the case until the child is 18. We’re in the home working with them supporting not only the parent, but the child as well,” said Salus. For Berkowitz, the experience of being a mother was everything and more than she thought it would be. “It’s scary; the unknown is scary. But you have to have faith that the right thing will happen,” she said. Bree who is now two-and-a-half, is a happy little girl who enjoys “Dora the Explorer,” birthday parties, reading and laughing; everything a toddler would enjoy. “Bree was the name given to her at birth. Her middle name is Victoria because she was victorious the day she was born, she’s victorious now and the experience was victorious,” Berkowitz said. JAFCO Children Experience March of the Living and Birthright Courtesy of the Jacquie and Marty Lederman March of the Living Endowment I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to be able to go to Israel on Birthright and connect with my Jewish Heritage. I was able to see everything I ever wanted to see. I had my Bat Mitzvah in a Kibbutz outside of Jerusalem, and met 40 incredible new friends during the trip. I am so proud to say that I actually climbed the infamous Masada, I floated in the Dead Sea, and rode a camel in the desert! Thank you so much 1,000 times! Love, Kayla JAFCO Going on the March of the Living was one of the most riveting and unforgettable experiences I have ever had the opportunity of participating in. This emotional two week journey gave me an inside perspective on my religious beliefs and who I am as a Jewish person today. Taking my first breath in Israel after visiting the devastation of the concentration camps was a moment I will not every forget. It completely changed my life and I’m very grateful to have gone on this trip. Love , Yoni 26 JOURNAL JAFCO Board Member Mara Gober A native of Miami Beach and a “Beach High” alumna, Mara Hornreich Gober’s passion has always been helping people that are less fortunate than she. As a child, Mara frequently would bring her classmates home for dinner when she learned that they were being raised by a single parent who worked long hours, late into the night. Not wanting them to be home alone and eating a sandwich for dinner, Mara would invite them to dinner where her father who was a big “kibbitzer” would make them laugh and feel comfortable. She knew at a young age that she was truly lucky to have the wonderful family she had and wanted to share the love and security that she felt in her home. Mara fondly recalls that one of her friends once described her as a “mender of broken wings”, and that was certainly quite true. Mara’s compassion for children led her to become an elementary school teacher and in that capacity she was devastated to learn that some of her students were being abused and neglected at home. In addition to teaching them academics, Mara worked extra hard with these students to not only improve their grades but also their self esteem, their self-respect and their self-worth. In 1995, Mara joined the JAFCO Board of Trustees, where today she is the Vice President. In addition she is the Co-President of the Weston Chapter of JAFCO, one of the largests chapter with hundreds of members. Mara’s dedication to JAFCO keeps her busy all day long and several years ago she had a room in her Weston home converted into her personal “JAFCO home office”. Mara has the full support of her wonderful husband Dr. Mel Gober, who is the owner of Towncare Dental & Main Street Dentistry with multiple offices located throughout the state of Florida. Mel is also deeply committed to JAFCO’s mission and so proud of his wife’s accomplishments. The Gobers have two adult children Dr. Shane Gober, already a JAFCO donor and planning to become a mentor to some of the children who are in college and interested in medicine. Their daughter JAFCO Board of Trustees Dr. Ronald D. Simon President Mara Gober Vice-President Rabbi Bernhard Presler Secretary Alan Levy Treasurer Mara’s passion has always been helping people that are less fortunate than she Haley and new son-in-law Adam followed in their philanthropic footsteps and became the second generation in the Gober family to become JAFCO Godparents, spiritually adopting all of the 350 children of JAFCO with a ten year pledge of $1,800 a year. In addition to their financial commitment to being JAFCO Godparents since 2000, Mel and Mara have a children’s library named in their honor at the JAFCO Children’s Emergency Shelter and recently made a second capital pledge to name the program director’s office at the new JAFCO Respite and Family Resource Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. “Mara has already introduced all of her family members and friends (from both Weston and South Beach) to JAFCO and after every vacation she is back at the JAFCO Village bringing in new people that she has just met”, says Sarah Franco, JAFCO Executive Director. Prior to her involvement with JAFCO, Mara has served on the Board of Directors of CHAREE and she and her husband are proud supporters of AIPAC, Jewish Federation, IDF and many medical charities. The State of Israel is very important to her. It has been said that “it is when you give of yourself that you truly give” and Mara Gober has given so much of herself to JAFCO that words cannot express our gratitude to her. At this point, transportation becomes a critical factor, as our young adults must now figure out a way to get to school, work, doctor’s appointments, therapy and to spend time with their friends. As part of our Independent Living Curriculum, the children do learn to take the bus, but the South Florida public transportation schedule can be limited and is not always safe late at night. Of course, our budget does not allow us to purchase cars for the children, but it does help so much when a car is donated! Cars that are donated for use by the children are deductible to the extent allowed by IRS Guidelines. So the next time your car dealer offers you a minimal trade in value on your car, please consider donating it to one of our children instead of selling it because..... you may be the missing piece in a child’s journey to independence. To my JAFCO Family, For the last year and a half I have been living on my own and taking the bus to school and work, it hasn’t been too bad except on rainy days I ended up soaked and sometimes at night it was a little scary being on the bus alone. The thought of having my own car would be a dream come true but I knew I would have to wait until a donated car came in and I also knew that a lot of other kids were waiting too. The other day I was sleeping and I got a picture message on my phone from Aunt Sarah. The picture was of a blue car and the message said: “congratulations on your new car!” I just could not believe it and blue is my favorite color. I immediately put it on my facebook page and my friends were so happy for me! They have been driving me everywhere and now I can return the favor. I feel so lucky and I am so very grateful to my JAFCO family for adding this to the long list of gifts you have given me in my life! xoxo K A copy of JAFCO’s official non-profit registration and financial information may be obtained from the following state agencies; in Florida contact the Division of Consumer Services (registration #CH19241) at 1-800-HELP-FLA; in New York contact the State Department of Law Charities Bureau (registration #21-49-39) at 120 Broadway, N.Y., N.Y. 10271; in Pennsylvania contact the Department of State (registration #34017) at 1-800-732-0999.
