The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month It’s a different approach to getting kids excited about music, in the language students are comfortable with.

Pete Carney, a former Duval County music student has developed a concept called Interactive Listening, a top-rated iBook and textbook. In fact, it’s the first education method ever to be featured on the iTunes homepage.

Interactive Listening was recently purchased by Duval County Public Schools and is set to be taught to students this year.

“The idea is to help kids make the connection between ‘Happy’ by Pharrell, to Mozart’s ‘Night Music,’” said Carney, who says his goal is for technology in school to create interaction between students, not isolation in front of devices. Interactive Listening, which has earned rave reviews from music educators nationwide, was named by Apple Inc. as the #1 Editor’s Choice in all categories of textbooks and was the first music education method to ever be featured on Apple’s iTunes website. Duval County Public Schools has recently purchased 2,000 textbooks for students and 100 iBooks for teachers as part of this new initiative. It features Hollywood-style graphics, an orchestra of interactive 3-D instruments, and entertaining computer games. “We wanted to create enjoyable content that engages students by using a diverse spectrum of sounds, from prehistoric cavemen to Beethoven to Coldplay,” said Carney. “We give music education the movie-star treatment, by including music videos, 3-D imagery and computer games that make it fun for students to learn music history.” Pretty cool stuff! And keep listening for great interviews every weekday morning at 9 a.m. on First Coast Connect, on 89.9FM!

Police Athletic League of Jacksonville

Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida - Refugee Services

JaxPal.com

LSSJax.org

Through educational, athletic and leadership programs, the Police Athletic League of Jacksonville enriches the lives of children by creating positive relationships between law enforcement officers and the youth of our community. PAL serves roughly 2,600 kids annually. PAL builds friendships between Jacksonville law enforcement officers and the children we serve. The vast majority of these kids live in zip codes which have the highest concentration of risk factors for raising a child: highest percentage of poverty lowest average median income, highest incidence of unemployment, teen pregnancy, births to unwed mothers, single parent households and high school drop-outs. Our sports program is the “hook” to attract students to PAL where we can provide academic assistance, life skills instruction and mentoring from positive role models.

IMAGINE LIVING IN A PLACE WHERE YOU FEAR FOR YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF YOUR LOVED ONES EVERY DAY. This is the refugee experience. Each year, Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida (LSS) welcomes hundreds of refugee men, women and children to the Jacksonville area. We provide a variety of services to help them get settled in their new home and adjust to a new culture. There is much to learn, and there are many obstacles. But thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers, the refugees we serve are well on their way to self-sufficiency within months. We are confident that our work has helped make Jacksonville the vibrant and diverse community it is today. To learn more, visit our Website, www.LSSJax.org. LEADERSHIP JAX

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

An interview with a leader in the Jacksonville Community

MEG ROSE – “A Multi-Faceted

Leader; Turning Vision into Reality” Vice President of Field Operations, Firehouse Subs of America LLC

Buzz: You oversee the operations of over 800 Firehouse franchises. Amazing! How did you come to be VP of Firehouse? Did you always want to be in the service industry? Meg Rose: Actually, I wanted to become a marine biologist, the service industry kind of claimed me. I attended college in Rhode Island and just like a lot of kids do I got a job to have a little spending money. I started working at a little restaurant/bar called the Bonvue Inn and I loved it! I then started waitressing at Friday’s and in 3 months was promoted to Manager. This was the start to my management career path in the industry. I went on to become Regional Director for Applebee’s. This experience was invaluable because I was able to work at the ground level in the franchisee process and help them grow to over 62 locations. In this industry you wear a lot of hats and need to know “something about everything.” In 2007 I joined Firehouse as Franchisee Business Manager, which at that time Firehouse had about 172 franchises. I am so proud to be part of the Firehouse family and to be an active member in its monumental growth and expansion. We now have over 800 locations and in October we will be celebrating our 20th birthday as a company. Buzz: This year you were recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery. What does being a “leader” mean to you? Meg Rose: Being recognized as a leader in my community is an honor. I am passionate about leadership and take the responsibility very seriously. A leader needs to have a clear vision of what they are working towards and trying to achieve. Identify your vision and then turn it into reality! You need to make sure you have “the right people in the seats” and sometimes that can be a tough call….As a leader, “We don’t succeed alone but we do fail alone.” Give back to your community and those less fortunate you – that is the culture at Firehouse. Robin (Firehouse owner) once told me, “We give because we should and we can.” Making Subs-Saving Lives… Buzz: What advice would you leave future leaders? Meg Rose: Take every opportunity that you can to learn and “do the job before you get the job.” Identify those mentors or role models that are doing what you want to do and emulate them. This will help you develop your own style and what works for you. Remember that nobody can read your mind, be selfmotivated and let people know what you want and make it happen. Last but not least – Work Hard!

Ann Kemp

I am an artist currently living in Jacksonville, Florida. My work ranges widely between traditional oil painting, graphic design and multimedia. Within this portfolio you will find several artwork samples that showcase my abilities and accurately represent my personal & professional style. I actively pursue opportunities to share my talents. Any inquiries can be emailed directly to me at mjgroe@gmail.com, or feel free to contact me through any one of my social media webpages.”

Sharing my photographs is often sharing myself, revealing those unique images that I have seen and captured with my camera in private moments of quiet meditative observation and solitude. I strive to capture the overlooked. This may be seen as a form… shadow… shape… color… movement… or texture. When doing this, the commonplace often becomes the unusual and the imperfect becomes mysterious, allowing the viewer an opportunity for subjective interpretation and contemplation.” See Ann’s work in “Fusion,” a new exhibition to open at the Cultural Center of Ponte Vedra September 26th from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

THEATRE

THEATRE IN THE KNOW

BUZZ: What’s your background in the arts? DY: Theatre. I was an actor who became a director who

By Todd Rykaczewski

became a producer who became an administrator and presenter. I also have taught theatre. The theatre is my first love in the arts. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts and Theatre and a Masters of Fine Art in Drama and Acting.

INTERVIEW WITH DENTON YOCKEY Director of thrasher-horne center for the arts “My predecessor, Tony Walsh, has done a great job over the past 10 years lining up a variety of programs which showcase the arts at a very high standard. I would like to specifically enhance what Tony and the Center have been doing by showcasing some of today’s popular artists, specifically targeting the generation of millennials, those who are currently between the ages of 19 and 34. I also would like to present some of the popular artists of the past 35 years or so as well for Generation X and the Baby Boomers.” -Denton Yockey BUZZ: A leader must be equipped with a set of competences necessary to perform their goal. Which one would you say is the most important ability a leader should have? DY: I note you asked about an “important ability” as opposed to an “important quality.” Bearing in mind that distinction, I would say the ability to prioritize is extremely important to a leader of any organization. There are arguments that can be made for other abilities such as communication and team building, etc., but the ability to assess (and reassess as necessary,) what is most important at any one given time assists in providing the leader and the organization a game plan to tackle its most important challenges when they need to be tackled.

BUZZ: What are some shows/exhibits that are coming

up that you are excited about? DY: There are really many upcoming exciting events and I am not certain where to start. I am looking forward to hearing the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra for the first time. I am a big fan of Tom Wopat. He has been a Broadway mainstay for the past couple of decades and his upcoming concert features many of the “Rat Pack” standards we all know and love. There is an exciting exhibit called The American Soldier, which is a photographic history from the Civil War to the War in Iraq and then of course, we have dance, family shows, and Broadway musicals such as “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Guys and Dolls.”

Players By The Sea Inspiration and excitement as “Jesus Christ Superstar” opens the new Players by the Sea season! Players by the Sea begins its 49th season with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s thrilling rock musical “Jesus Christ Superstar,” opening September 19 on the Main Stage. The story of Jesus’ last days is retold through the disillusioned eyes of his betrayer Judas. As Jesus struggles with the human and divine sides of his identity against a backdrop of politics, betrayal and the devouring perils of celebrity, he is alternately exalted and let down by his disciples, followed unconditionally only by the devoted Mary Magdalene.

BUZZ: How can the community be more involved with Thrasher-Horne Center? DY: Ummm….buy a ticket? Listen, it’s not all about money of course. What I should say is come see and experience an event. Some of them are free to the public. All of our gallery exhibits are free and we always have at least one free concert a year. This year – two. Obviously, we have to charge for most of our events to cover our expenses and those of the artists, but the tickets are really reasonably priced. We do have a volunteer program and I welcome programming and show suggestions. Anyone can find me at dentonyockey@sjrstate.edu. BUZZ: Is there anything you wish to tell the Jacksonville

community about Thrasher-Horne Center? That is how you can find us. We also have a Conference Center, which provides space for rent to the public for weddings, banquets, business conferences, health expos, you name it. Come to think of it, we rent out our two theatre venues as well. Just come on in and check us out. See a show or a concert. It is a great center for the arts with a terrific conference center. It’s easy to find with minimal traffic and easy free parking. Once you are here, stop me and say hi.

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast

“Phantom, The Musical,”

At Orange Park Community Theatre It’s not the Phantom musical everyone knows about, but “Phantom, the Musical” is coming to the Orange Park Community Theatre. Like the popular musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston’s Phantom is based on Gaston Leroux’s novel, “The Phantom of the Opera.” “Phantom the Musical” has never been performed on Broadway but has had more than 1,000 productions in regional and community theaters. “I don’t want to suggest that I don’t like Andrew Lloyd Webber’s version,” said director Kurt McCall. “But Kopit and Yeston’s Phantom musical is incredible.” Both musicals share some similarities, but McCall describes Phantom the Musical as a more intimate show with a greater focus on the storyline and an operetta-style score. “It shares some of the same aspects as the Webber version,” McCall said. “But the Kopit/ Yeston version reveals more of a love story.” The cast features nearly 30 local actors, including Ellen Marini as Christine and Rick Cubbedge as the Phantom. “We have a super talented cast with the right chemistry,” McCall said. McCall is designing the set, which will feature secret corridors and passageways. The musical will be performed with a live band. Sonia Lewis is assisting as vocal coach. “I could not have done this show without her,” McCall said. “Phantom the Musical” opens Aug. 29. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday through Sept. 21. Tickets are $20. For reservations, visit OPCT.org or call (904) 276-2599. Marsha Hatcher

“Upon retirement in the late 90s I returned to artistic expression; learning, doing and teaching decorative painting. I have also done mural work, banners (both painted and fiber art) and painting decorative items and chairs with shell motifs. Much of my current work has been connected to the Jacksonville Shell Club and Show. I paint what I enjoy and enjoy what I paint. Retirement is wonderful!”

Melanie Soto

Marsha Hatcher (MHat) was born in South Georgia and received her BA degree in art at Albany State University. She has been painting professionally for many years. Every painting is a challenge to do better than the last painting. Hatcher paints portraits in a expressionistic style, capturing both likeness and emotion. This mood driven style of painting assures that each piece of art is unique.

Melanie Soto is a Mixed Media Artist. She received her B.F.A. from the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago in Media Art and Animation. Leilani Leo

Stephanie Zide

It was at the age of 37 that she finally found out that with a passion for learning, the right teacher, and some self-confidence her dreams of being an artist were attainable and an oil painter was born. Only a little over two years later, wanting to expand on that dream, she challenged her abilities by choosing this charity project for BUZZ Magazine as her first attempt at painting in acrylics.

Stephanie Zide has been a resident of Jacksonville much of her life. She began drawing as soon as she could properly hold a crayon and never looked back. She is working towards her Bachelors degree in Information Technology Management at Florida State College at Jacksonville. She seeks to obtain a M.F.A. in Painting and would like to create art to help support various environmental causes, like conservation.

Kate Vallas

Pat Ovard

Kate E. Vallas comes from a family of artists. She is Jacksonville native and graduated from University of North Florida in 2004 with a BFA in painting/ drawing. Her real love is still-life, for this form of painting is meditative. The objects do not move and Kate can paint in a trance and then step away from that moment of time and sometimes asks herself, “Did I do that?” or was it another force of energy and spirit?

Michael Cenci Michael is a member of The Art Center of Jacksonville and a member of the Jacksonville Coalition of the Visual Arts. His photographs are on display in galleries located at downtown, the Corse Gallery, First Street Gallery, as well as other local galleries, and corporate collections. Michael’s photographs have been published in The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, and The Mirror in Great Britain, as well as other international media.

Emine Zander

Winter Broadhurst

Emine Zander began her study of art while in school, taking art classes to complement her architectural studies in Istanbul. Later as she traveled for artichect jobs or family reasons, Zander discovered that she prefers to work with watercolor and oil. Zander enjoys living in Jacksonville, and is excited to share her artwork with the Jacksonville community through AWA.

Meleese paints with an ever-evolving contemporary style in which she frequently incorporates other mixed media onto a variety of surfaces. She considers art as both a frontier and vehicle where she can explore and express her inner most thoughts, feelings, beliefs and faith in the hope that others will find it to be encouraging. Meleese has contributed to numerous events, exhibits, online publications and private collections locally, nationally and beyond.

cHristiaN GoNzales Christian’s passion for the arts began at an early age. A student at both Douglas Anderson and the Westside Skills Center for Commercial art in high school, he has always dedicated time and effort to crafting his artistic abilities. Although he has an established career in Air Conditioning, Christian still makes time to pursue his lifelong passion.

Pat has just recently picked up his brushes with a renewed passion for painting, after being away from it for some 30-40 years (other than decorative wall finishes and murals). Previously Ovard has experience painting with oils, and is exploring using other mediums with varied subject matter. He is currently working on a series of landscapes.

Heather Blanton Heather Blanton began her love affair with art as far back as she can remember. “It was the only thing in life that I felt I could do my true own way.” A rebellious spirit and anti-establishment ideas, art was a means of expressing herself with out the use of words. It was another form of language, the visible, creating imagery with usage of colors, altering it through movement.

Meleese scott

Winter is currently a student a Florida State College. She is passionate about God and his amazing love. Broadhurst has always had a place in her heart for women in bad situations who need help. “I’m always learning new techniques and skills for my artwork. I love learning about life, and enjoy school. I find inspiration through the outdoors, learning about other cultures, friends and family,” she notes.

katHryN steveNs Kathryn has a strong appreciation for the arts: visual, graphic and written. Stevens’ academic background is in journalism, specifically TV, print and web. Painting is a creative outlet for her, allowing her to explore all the sides of herself.

jessica becker Jessica Becker is a self-taught artist from Neptune Beach. She started painting in 2004 and paints in many styles as well as many sizes. Her biggest mural is on the side of the 2-story restaurant TacoLu in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The mural was freehand painted with brush of Dia de los Muertos Virgen de Guadalupe and took 224 hours/35 days to complete.

aMber leePPer When I‘m asked if I am an artist, I usually respond with a questionable look and respond with a iffy answer as I question myself to whether I am or not. I think a lot of artists do the same thing, but really I should be proud to say I am an artist and that it is my passion. I think AWA was a great way to start challenging myself to once again to pursue my passion in art.

Paco Gutierrez

silvia dearaujo

rosaly Natera

lora Davis-HeNNiNGseN

Gutierrez returned to painting again after working more than 20 years in the corporate world. He has shown in galleries in Miami, Kansas and Long Island, N.Y. and Jacksonville, most recently at the Art Center (TAC) and at Avondale Artworks. See the model Children’s unit at N.E.F.L. State Hospital and 13 wall graphics at the international arrivals wing at J.I.A. for example of his work.

Silvia’s has shown her art in galleries in Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, and Sao Paulo Brazil. She advocates with passion the importance of art in our lives. “Art is intrinsic in all of us, music, visual arts, literature, etc. etc. we just need to let it flow, The earlier you let it flow the sooner you will have a better understanding of the world and yourself .”

From birth, Natera was diagnosed with Hyperactive Creativity Disorder, which caused her brain to grow delirious with color and ideas. To cope with her illness her mother filled her room with the tools of arts & crafts. Soon Rosaly found herself turning the chaos within into tangible, visual, colorful, wonderful things that delighted her.

Lora loves using bright bold colors and textures and paints primarily with oils using a variety of subject matter. She believes that we all have creativity that lives within us. Encouraging this creativity is one of her life’s passions. One of Lora’s goals is to encourage creative thinking and actions in others to help them realize the importance and power of the arts.

SPOTLIGHT

CHASE HECK

AWARENESS WITH ART 1ST PLACE WINNER

In the first part of Awareness with Art, artists decorated a BUZZ Magazine distribution box with their personal artwork and a charity logo of their choice. Then for the next six months, the community voted on their favorite box. With a total of 788 votes, Chase Heck is our 1st place winner! Congratulations Chase!

BUZZ: What grade are you going into this year? CH: 8th grade at Landmark Middle School. BUZZ: What’s your favorite subject in school? CH: Science, it has cool experiments, and this year’s art classes.

BUZZ: What inspired you to participate in Awareness with Art?

CH: I like to paint. I have

been a part of the River Art mentorship with Jaxport and The Art Center in the past. Along with wanting to raise awareness for Community Connections, the mentors at The Art Center encouraged me to paint a box.

BUZZ: How did you come up with the idea for your artwork?

CH: I really took some time and thought out what I liked to do in Jacksonville as a kid. I decided the one thing that reminded me the most of Jacksonville is the ocean. I also got to put a cool spin on the sea life.

BUZZ: Why do you think it’s so important to let people know about Community Connections?

CH: I felt the most connected with Community Connections charity. Being a kid myself, I have been given the opportunity to learn art through The Art Center and other programs in Jacksonville. I want to give back and help the kids at Community Connections learn art too. I hope some of the money we raise can go to help them get art supplies and things they need for their everyday life. BUZZ: How did you feel when you found out you were the 1st place winner? CH: My first reaction was “Cool.” Then it started to sink

in and I realized that I was really helping other kids in the community just like the mentors at The Art Center help me.

The Art Center Cooperative, Inc. An interview with

Ed Malesky

Secretary and Special Projects The Art Center Cooperative, Inc. What is the primary function of The Art Center Cooperative, Inc. (TAC) in Jacksonville? Our mission is: “To kindle, support and celebrate the artistic, cultural and creative spirit of the community while promoting our member artists’ professional careers through exposure.” What this really means is that we want to help our members become better and more successful artists, while bringing art in a dynamic way to the Jacksonville community. What exhibits will TAC galleries showcase this fall? Our newest show is Print Matters at our Premier Gallery at the Bank of America Tower. It’s an opportunity to highlight all the print makers in the community. This will be followed by Shadows and Light. This show invites all artistic media to show the powerful interplay that light and shadows can have in their work. How does Awareness with Art help to further TAC’s mission? Awareness with Art definitely allowed us to reach out into the broader artist community in Jacksonville. Half of the artists that participated painting the BUZZ Magazine boxes were not members of The Art Center and represented all ages and styles of art. It was especially great to give some of the newer artists an opportunity to participate in a project of this scale and get their art seen by a lot of people. Now they’ll be able to further expand their exposure through the Awareness with Art auction at Jaxtoberfest, where the donated work of all the participating artists will be available for sale. The project also put homegrown art all over Jacksonville, where the art could be seen by everyone. Some people never make it to a museum or one of our galleries to see local artwork, but with this project we made our art very accessible. We also felt that working with so many charities and nonprofits was a wonderful thing. Tell us about the studio workshops that you all host. How can interested readers get involved? Our next Workshop is Visual Journaling, which will be taught by Jennifer O’Donnell, on September 14, 21 and 28th, part of our Save Your Sanity Sundays program. Information and tickets to attend can be found on our website – www.tacjacksonville.org/workshops/ We ran a series of evening informational art presentations during the spring that became a popular forum for residents to discuss art topics. We are going to continue the series in fall with three provocative subjects: • Obscenity - what constitutes obscenity in the art world and Jacksonville. • Paint the Town - an extension of our graffiti session, with Jenny Hager.

• Artist Provocateur - political art and when art crosses over from free speech to hate speech, with Ed Hall. We’ll be adding information for these evening discussion on our website in the next several weeks. As an artist, how would you get involved with TAC? Do artists have the opportunity to rent their own studio space? Anyone can apply to become a member of TAC by filling out an application, which can either be found on our website or at any of our galleries. They must submit images of their work and then bring three of their pieces to our gallery for a jurying process by our members. If their work is accepted and they agree to the support and work commitments required by the cooperative, they become a General Member. Studios are managed by Annelies Dykgraaf and are located in TAC II, our gallery at 229 N. Hogan St. We have eight studio spaces, but they go quickly. What inspired you to get involved in the Art Center Cooperative, Inc.? How long have you been with the organization? Once I became a full time artist in 2005 I looked for an artist cooperative to show my work. I was involved with two other cooperatives that both went out of business. However, while at a Marketing for Artists seminar put on by Alyson Stanfield in 2010, I met Mary Atwood. At that time Mary was President of TAC. What impressed me the most was that TAC had been around since 2005 and was run by a dedicated group of artists. I joined immediately and very quickly joined the Board and was VP for two years and I am now Secretary and Special Projects Coordinator. What is one of your favorite memories working at TAC? Good memories come in a few different flavors. Personally, it was a thrill to win my first show ribbon for a piece I had done. I try to participate in every show that TAC puts on, which is a lot and I never get tired of getting a ribbon. On a more serious side is the bigger projects that TAC has done as a group that really makes me feel good. TAC is well known for working with local groups to paint murals. It’s always fun to go into a school and see a mural that TAC has done. We have been big supporters of One Spark, being both a Creator and a Venue for both One Spark Festivals and the same with JazzFest. All our members work to keep the galleries open for these events. Most recently has been our efforts as part of The ARTery, a group which includes TAC, The Art League of Jacksonville and The Performers Academy, who are working to lease the old Armory building from the City and convert it into a visual and performing arts center. Our recent fundraiser at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum showed us just how much support there is for this project around the city. What are some of your favorite pieces of public art in Jacksonville? I tend to like large images on the buildings downtown. During One Spark 1, Doug Eng’s large scale photos on the buildings on Laura were wonderful and I loved the Rise from the ashes mural that went up across from our gallery on Adams St. The murals on Chamblins and the Burrito Gallery are also great examples of local large scale work. I am also looking forward to Jenny Hager’s Sculpture Walk Jax, something she created from the Cultural Council’s Spark Grant process, that will put sculpture all over downtown.

What’s Happening at MOSH By Kristi Taylor

Behind the Scenes: MOSH Exhibits Have you ever thought about what it takes to open an exhibit? The traveling exhibits MOSH hosts are generally booked through traveling exhibit companies or fellow museums. And, the planning takes place as many as three years in advance. In fact, the most popular exhibits sometimes have a three-year waiting list! Once an exhibit is selected, planning springs into action – from planning programming to developing a marketing campaign. MOSH’s traveling exhibits are showcased in the second-floor gallery. Before a new exhibit arrives, the old exhibit has to be packed up and the floor is cleared. Then, semi trucks arrive with the new exhibit in tow. The unloading process normally involves opening the side of the second floor and lifting the largest of the crates into the building. It’s quite a sight to see! When one day’s work is done, another truck – or two – arrives with more creates to unload. The entire set up process takes about 10 days. Then, the fun begins! We host a special sneak preview for our Members followed by the Grand Opening for the public. “Megalodon: Largest Shark that Ever Lived” is on display through September 14. This exhibit tells the remarkable story of Megalodon, a 60-footlong prehistoric shark that ruled the

Face -toFace Encounters

seas more than two million years ago. Then, on October 11, Odyssey’s “SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure” will sail into MOSH. This exhibit brings real shipwreck treasures - and the technology used to recover it – to MOSH! Find out what it’s like to be a shipwreck explorer, the captain of a sinking ship or a pirate on the run with hands-on activities including a robotic arm to pick up treasure and a hurricane simulator to challenge the storm. And, next summer, “Dinosaurs Unearthed” will be unleashed at MOSH. This will be our most technologically advanced dinosaur exhibit to date! What exhibits would you like to see at MOSH? Drop us a line at info@themosh.org. We’d love to hear you!

Two Thumbs Up

How Good Food Should Taste

Appetizer: Choritos a la chalaca – slew of mussels from Lima’s main seaport served with chopped onion, tomato and Peruvian white corn served in their own shell with a luscious lime sauce only $8.99.

Ceviche Jax Article by Monica Stouder & Photos by Monica Lea Imagery Fish enthusiasts don’t have to pull out the bobber and pole to get fresh flavors here in Jacksonville. Ceviche Jax in Atlantic Beach will appease your palate and have you craving a Peruvian pop of spice with your lime-infused meal of maritime munchies. No fishing needed as this amazing restaurant will have you completely hooked in a single bite! Ceviche Jax is a wondrous place for amazing Peruvian eats hands down! Hidden away in a tiny strip mall this inconspicuous spot for eclectic eaters has only 10 tables and is adorned in a beautiful, cobalt blue hue – perfect for the predominantly seafood-inspired menu. This small restaurant is clean and casual, yet intimate –in other words, perfect for date-nighters looking to impress without stress, or for those foodies who simply want a new venue to Instagram away fabulous new food pics in a cool blue setting. My phenomenal server Stefany was patient as I muddled through the Peruvian offerings (thank goodness for pictures as I was new to this kind of cuisine), and her suggested menu choices were spot on. I began with an appetizer of the Choritos a la chalaca, which were chopped

mussels on the half shelf swimming in a delicious sauce of lime juice, cream and spices. Finely chopped onion, tomato and whole kernals of white Peruvian corn gave texture to the mix. Apparantly this is a very popular coastal recipe. Chalaca means that it is from Callao, Lima’s main seaport according to the menu and this dish had outstanding flavor and had a big “wow” factor for me.

that the traditional way to eat this ceviche was to incorporate these side items in your fish bite. Different but delectable to say the least. Desserts are different each day and so I opted for the Mango Mousse. A dainty portion, this light bite was the perfect way to end a perfect meal. I couldn’t have constructed a better evolution of eats.

Put simply, I loved each element of this place – outstanding, friendly and informative service, traditional, yet eclectic menu, beautifully prepared plates and everything here is house-made down to the sauces. So truly if you have a pension for fantastic fish with spice and Peruvian flare, catch Ceviche Jax – I guarantee you’ll go again and again, The menu has many selections of ceviche hook, line and sinker! which you can order as fish, shrimp, Buzzworthy Note: seafood medley or calamari, thinly sliced or chunked and stacked. I choice It is probably best to make a reservation the Ceviche El Inka, stacked with fish. here as there is very limited seating. And The fish was marinated in lime, yellow while mid-afternoon was only partially Peruvian spice pepper, garlic and salt populated, tables fill up fast at prime and hands down is the best ceviche I dining hours. Make a note that the have ever had…period. A good-sized restaurant is only open on Mondays with portion, this delicate dish also came with special reservation. Additionally, while a cooked slice of sweet potato, a grilled there is no Happy Hour as of yet, a small corn (which tasted like popcorn) and selection of domestic beer and wine are Peruvian white corn. I was instructed served here.

Appetizer: Ocopa – a huacataybased (Amazon Black Mint) sauce served over sliced baked potato for $6.00.

The second appetizer was called Ocopa and was constructed of layered, thinly sliced baked potato covered in an herbaceous sauce made up of huacatay and lime juice. Unlike anything I have ever tasted, this Amazon Black mint and potato combo was a smooth and savory bite.

Entrée: Fish Ceviche El Inka – white fish ceviche marinated in lime juice, yellow Peruvian spice pepper, garlic and salt, accompanied by cooked sliced yam and Peruvian white corn.

Dessert: Mousse de Mango – a light and delicate mango moose with fresh mango slice and mint only $6.00.

Alen Glen, president of the restaurant firm, said the new restaurant would be called “The Embers,” and Eric D. Maier of New York City had been appointed manager.

As I was munching away at my salad, I realized that if I looked out of the side window of the place, I could just make out another place where good food used to be served in Jacksonville back when I was a kid. The cuisine was elegant and diners were able to enjoy a panorama of the city while they ate. Everyone had to give the place a try. PETER FR AMPTON STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Following a massive year of touring, including 2013’s inaugural Frampton’s Guitar Circus, Peter Frampton is back on the road. This time Frampton will set out on a threepart catch-all tour including select solo dates, a co-headlining run with Grammy-winning American rock legends The Doobie Brothers and the return of Frampton’s Guitar Circus Kicking off in August, Frampton’s Guitar Circus will feature special performances with friend and celebrated guitarist Buddy Guy as well as other surprise guests. Last year’s Guitar Circus’ company included B.B. King, Robert Cray, Sonny Landreth, Steve Cropper, Dean DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots), Don Felder (formerly of The Eagles), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Vince Gill, Roger McGuinn (founder/lead guitarist of the BYRDS) and many more. Frampton has kept quite busy over the past year in addition to touring. He was recently inducted in the Musicians Hall of Fame, performed onstage at the Grammy’s with Ringo Starr and also played an integral part in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Beatles’ arrival in the U.S. by performing on CBS’ “The Night That Changed America: A GRAMMY Salute to The Beatles.” Frampton also produced Humble Pie’s Rockin’ The Fillmore deluxe compilation with original member Jerry Shirley (available now via Omnivore Recordings). Moreover, he worked with the Cincinnati Ballet last spring providing and composing new music for their April production. Grammy winner Peter Frampton remains one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. At 16, he was lead singer and guitarist for British band the Herd. At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. His session work includes collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle and many others. His fifth solo album, “the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive!,” is one of the top-selling live records of all time.

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS - Facebook.com/HawthorneHeights

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Remember when today’s middle-aged working stiffs were once young Generation X-types who were wearing ironic T-shirts reading “FREAK” or “LOSER,” words that mirrored their grunge-centric ennui? Then there was one band who made that pervading nihilism even more stylish by rocking black shirts with the word “zero” in silver glitter. But while the z-word has the capacity to taint test scores, bank balances and attempts at self-actualization in ways no other common integer can, it does represent more positive ideals. Consider the terminology used by project managers to herald the beginning of a big project: Year Zero. What’s the numerical equivalent used when someone uses the metaphor of “hitting the reset button” on their lives and/or careers? That’s right: zero. For the members of Hawthorne Heights, the word (or number) isn’t the providence of losers, nor a bastion of stylish disconnection. “Zero,” the fifth album from the Dayton, Ohio, outfit, represents a positively incandescent future. Now aligning themselves with Red River Entertainment, Hawthorne Heights—singer/guitarist JT Woodruff, guitarists Micah Carli and Mark McMillion, bassist Matt Ridenour and drummer Eron Bucciarelli—are rising above their post-hardcore roots in ambitious measures. Overseen by producer Brian Virtue, “Zero” marks a wider breadth of the band’s capacity to create compelling work, regardless of the social implications found in certain music subcultures. (Translation: Team HH tossed the punk-rock rulebook into a wood chipper.) “When people hear ‘Zero’, they’re going to be hearing a new band,” Eron Bucciarelli beams. “What we’re trying to accomplish is to reinvent ourselves and not be so attached to our history. I think there are elements of ‘Zero,’ that pay homage to Hawthorne Heights’ past, that we should by no means attempt to ignore. To a certain degree, we are the same people that wrote ‘The Silence In Black And White.’ We’re just older now.”

STRIKE UP A CHORD INTERVIEWS IN THE MUSIC COMMUNITY WITH TODD RYKACZEWSKI

INTERVIEWING BUDDY FROM SENSES FAIL

“I believe it just felt instinctual. My father played music and mother was on Broadway, they were both actors on soap operas as well. I was surrounded by entertainers. I also had a need and still do have a need to express myself. There are parts of me that might not see the light of day unless I explored them threw music.” -Buddy

BUZZ: Do your musical instruments have names? Buddy: No, but maybe they should. BUZZ: Could you describe your creative process? Buddy: It changes for every record. This record I wrote most of the initial ideas for the songs on guitar, which I have

never done before. In the past it was always other members or other people that started the spark with a riff but this time it came from me. I really had no idea I had it in me and was really exciting.

BUZZ: What unique traits do you have that make you such a great performer? Buddy: I think there is a willingness to be as vulnerable and authentic as I can be. See Senses Fail September, 24 at Underbelly. SensesFail.com

INTERVIEW WITH SARAH SPELSBERG AND CHAD STIDHAM

“We try to play songs that people will enjoy and put our own spin on them - and occasionally wing it.” -Chad

BUZZ: What drove you to start a band? Chad: Shared interest in being awesome. Sarah: I’m just laughing...we really just lucked into each other. Co-workers encouraged us to play together at a work holiday party and we’ve been musically inseparable ever since. He’s my music life partner.

BUZZ: Is there an underlining message you’re trying to deliver with your music? Chad: Feel good, look good, make love good. Sarah: In all seriousness we just want people to get together and have a great time. Life is short - be joyful and have a blast.

BUZZ: What do you do with your time off? Chad: I work full time as an anesthesia tech at Mayo Clinic and I am a full time nursing student. Also I do crossfit at

Black Hive Athletics.

Sarah: I work full time as a physician assistant in Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic and I love to climb at The Edge Rock Gym, ride cruiser and mountain bikes and get in the ocean every chance I get.

BUZZ: What’s the first song you remember hearing? Chad: Just the way you are by Billy Joel Sarah: probably whatever song my dad was playing on the piano. He wrote a lot of music for my mother in his spare time.

THE PLAY BY PLAY

WITH COLE PEPPER

RICK CATLETT

Gator Bowl Sports president College Football’s four team national championship playoff debuts this year. Cole Pepper sat down with Gator Bowl Sports president Rick Catlett to talk about the 12 year plan for determining college football’s champion and how it could impact things in Jacksonville. CP: Is the playoff a good thing for college football? RC: Not in its current format. It’s my personal belief that there will soon be four major conferences with 16 teams, which sets up the perfect playoff. You’ll have two divisions of eight in each conference. You’ll have two division champions who will play in the conference championship. Those winners play off. And I see that happening long before this 12 year cycle is over. CP: How does the playoff impact the bowls? RC: I think the BCS National Championship game impacted us because it established that the best two teams would play for the national championship. But I don’t think the four team playoff will impact us anymore because the reality is that the two teams who play in our bowl game (in this case the TaxSlayer.com Bowl) are fired up about being in a bowl game and the bring the people they need to bring. CP: How about hosting the national championship in Jacksonville. Can it happen? RC: I actually believe that within the first 10 cities that host the game, Jacksonville will be one of them. I think we have the stadium, I know we have the community.

It’s kind of like when we were chasing the NFL, they didn’t know what Jacksonville was about, so the fact that someone would say that we don’t have enough hotel rooms, well, we hosted the Super Bowl and that worked. CP: What they’re saying is there aren’t enough hotels downtown. RC: What they don’t realize is that between Ponte Vedra to Amelia Island to Daytona Beach we have plenty of hotels. What they don’t understand is how this area is set up. You can leave Ponte Vedra and be downtown in 30 minutes. It’s about education (of what Jacksonville has). CP: What would hosting the national championship do for Jacksonville in the big picture? RC: I think it continues the momentum that we’re establishing now with the Jaguars and the Players and what we’re doing here (with Gator Bowl Sports and the Jacksonville Sports Council). But like it did with the Super Bowl, it puts Jacksonville on the map nationally. You can’t buy enough advertising to reach 200 million Americans and the Super Bowl and the national championship game can do that.

NORTHEAST FLORIDA’S FIRST EXCLUSIVE 100 GALLON DONOR!

The Blood Alliance congratulates its first exclusive Northeast Florida 100 gallon donor, Binion Williams, 72, of Jacksonville, FL who reached his milestone mark on August 12. Williams joins an elite group of members that include: Bill Conroy (March 28, 2011), Dean Willis (December 12, 2011), Kelly Williams (January 10, 2013), David Crews (November 19, 2013), Carroll Sharp (January 8, 2014) and the sole female of the group, Sandy Moore (April 30, 2014). BINION WILLIAMS STORY: Binion Williams gave his first pint while serving in the U.S. Navy in Jacksonville, Florida back in 1961. A young Binion Williams and The Blood Alliance girl was struck by a car, and the Navy issued a plea to its sailors to phlebotomist, Julie Gremillion help out by giving blood. With four hours of “Vampire Leave” issued to sailors who gave blood, it was a win-win for both those who needed the lifesaving blood and for Williams who would spend an hour of his day on leave doing his community service. Williams has continued to give blood since that day in 1961, with ALL of his gifts donated in Jacksonville! This makes him the only 100-gallon donor in Northeast Florida to have given ALL his blood to Northeast Florida patients in need. “You have people who need it every hour of every day. If you’ve never thought about it, try it at least once…it’s very gratifying!” said Williams. “You also cover yourself and your family through a Recipients Benefits Program which is always helpful especially when you’re able to save money at a time of financial stress if you’re being treated in a hospital. Giving blood means you’re able to help your own family ‘after the fact’ with something you’ve already done, and if that also means you can help them financially save some – that’s always a bonus!” ABOUT THE BLOOD ALLIANCE: The Blood Alliance (TBA) provides blood to more than 30 hospitals and medical facilities in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. It provides a safe and adequate blood supply to the regions it serves and is a member of America’s Blood Centers – a national network of independent community blood centers responsible for nearly half of the nation’s blood supply. TBA has been enriching lives since 1942 and is a non-profit community blood center, licensed by the FDA and accredited by the AABB. Nutrition for Student Athletes Kate Dienst, MSH, RD, LD/N

Please join Chartwells on September 6th, 2014 at the Sports Injury Prevention Zone in conjunction with Chartwells All Star Series from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Raines High School. BOTH MY TIME AND BUDGET ARE LIMITED. WHAT ARE SOME STRATEGIES TO EAT WELL DURING THE SEASON? Though specialized sports products (bars, shakes, etc.) can be helpful, student athletes can get the nutrition they need through commonly available food. • Focus on complex carbohydrates prior to your workout. Your body burns sugar in the blood and stores in muscles and the liver first. If these stores become depleted, your body will make energy from stored fat and muscle. • A small amount of low fat protein circulating in your blood will ensure your muscles have what’s needed to rebuild and repair after an event. Quick, easy pregame foods include: egg white omelet with whole grain toast or banana with peanut butter. • After an event, the goal is to eat so your body can repair and build muscle. While the focus is on protein, some carbohydrates are needed to replenish stores in your muscles and liver. Examples of post game meals include: lean hamburger on whole grain bun with veggie toppings, whole wheat pasta with chicken & light sauce, or turkey in a whole grain wrap.

CAN FLORIDA STATE GO BACK TO BACK? Yes, the Seminoles could win consecutive national titles. The roster is loaded and the schedule is easy. Coach Jimbo Fisher has to continue to motivate this team. My biggest question is will new defensive coordinator Charles Kelly be able to make adjustments during the game similar to what Jeremy Pruitt, who is now with Georgia as defensive coordinator, was able to do last season. The receivers have the most questions after the loss of Kelvin Benjamin and Kenny Shaw and Bobo Wilson’s early suspension. Heralded prospects Ermon Lane, Ja’vonn Harrison and Travis Rudolph have had a productive camp. Rashad Greene, Scooter Haggins and Christian Green are the veterans. Haggins and Christian Green, both of whom have never caught a touchdown pass, have one more opportunity to have the big year that has escaped them due to injury and inconsistency. Sophomores Isaiah Jones and Kermit Whitfield are heavily in the mix. Senior tight end Nick O’Leary has evolved into one of the best in the nation. The running backs as a group are deep with Karlos Williams, Mario Pender, Ryan Green and freshman Dalvin Cook. They might be the best in the ACC. This is easily one of the best lines in college football. Senior Bobby Hart will be pressed by Wilson Bell and JUCO Chad Mavety. There are reports that Hart needs to get in better shape. Austin Barron is the center. Left tackle Cam Erving spurned the NFL to return for his final season. Tre’ Jackson was one of the highest graded linemen at the end of the season. Josue Matias is in line for more ACC honors. Brock Ruble, Rod Johnson and Corey Martinez and JUCO’s Kareem Are and Chad Mavety are providing depth.

Test food choices during training so you’ll know what works well for you. WHAT SHOULD I DO TO STAY FUELED DURING ENDURANCE EVENTS? After 60 minutes of exercise, you must replace water and carbohydrates to maintain blood sugar levels. Here are some general rules: • After the first hour of an endurance event, replace 100-250 calories from carbohydrates. • Continue to replace calories every 45 minutes after that during the event. • Foods should be easily digestible so blood flow is evenly distributed between your stomach and muscles. Remember that every athlete is different. Some do well using sports drinks and gels, while others prefer whole foods during the event. Try different choices during training to find out what works best for you!

Quarterback Jameis Winston had an amazing year, throwing for 44 touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards. Leadership and maturity are his growth areas. It will be hard to replace Timmy Jernigan, Jacobbi McDaniel and Demonte McAllister on the defensive line, but Eddie Goldman and Nile Lawrence-Stample, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, are solid. Chris Casher and Mario Edwards, Jr., are two of the better ends in the ACC. Keith Bryant, Derrick Nnadi, DeMarcus Christmas and Arthur Williams provide tackle depth. The pieces are in place for the Noles to be in the first ever college football playoff. Check out more blogs at iwantaBUZZ.com. Who may qualify for sealing of a criminal record? The following conditions apply to those considering sealing of their criminal record: 1. No prior convictions (i.e. adjudications of guilty) . This means that if you have a Withhold of Adjudication, you may be able to seal your record. 2. A person should have never applied for a sealing or expungement, previously.

Who may qualify for an expungement of a criminal record? 1. Must have no prior convictions. 2. The charge in question must be dropped, dismissed, or Nolle prosequi. John Travolta, James Gandolfini and Scott Caan in “Lonely Hearts”

Lights, Camera, Jacksonville! By Kristen Sell

“Lonely Hearts” filmed in Jacksonville from March through May of 2005. The movie was directed and written by Todd Robinson and starred John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Salma Hayek and Jared Leto. The film is based on the true story of the notorious “Lonely Hearts Killers” of the 1940s, Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez. Jacksonville stood in for Utica, NY. Local filming locations included the former John Gorrie Junior High School, Teacher Supply Depot in Riverside, Cecil Commerce Center and the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The production had a $4 million economic impact on Jacksonville, hiring over 100 crew members and 300 extras. After filming both “Lonely Hearts” and “Basic” in Jacksonville, Travolta stated, “As a Florida resident who lives near Jacksonville, I loved working in Jacksonville and in my home state. Jacksonville can depict a variety of locations. In ‘Lonely Hearts,’ the

city doubled for upstate New York circa 1948-52 and in ‘Basic,’ it stood in for the jungles of Panama. The convenience and accessibility of having these different locations so near to one another was a great asset.” “Basic,” filmed in Jacksonville from October of 2001 to April of 2002, is a mystery-thriller film produced by Mike Medavoy (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “The Silence of the Lambs” and “Rocky”), directed by John McTiernan (“Die Hard”) and starring Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Connie Nielsen, Taye Diggs, Giovanni Ribisi and Harry Connick, Jr. In “Basic,” Jacksonville doubled for the jungles of Panama. The production filmed at Cecil Commerce Center, built a massive set in a hangar at Cecil Field, and shot scenes in wooded areas at Cecil, Herlong Recreational Airport and Club Continental. The production had a $10 million local economic impact, hiring more than 250 crew members and 500 extras.

INSIDE LOOK

How long have you all been at your current location? 2+ years and going strong. What was your inspiration to open AB? We saw a need for a Men’s-focused barbershop where you can get a straight razor shave.

What makes AB so unique? First walking in you will smell the scent of Bay Rum aftershave and talc powder with our barbers greeting you.

What are your client’s favorite services? Our specialty is hot towel straight razor shaves. Our shave is a traditional hot towel shave using a badger brush and Proraso shaving products. How many barbers do you all have at the shop? 4 barbers and an AWESOME receptionist!

Can women get services at AB as well? We offer free moustache

shaves and beard removal for all women.

Owners of Angelo’s Barbershop

Old school with a cool twist” certainly describes Angelo’s Barbershops business model. This is not your ordinary cuttery of hair. Angelo’s is passionate about what they do and the unique services they offer. I spoke with Dominic and Sheila Ruscetta owners of this incredibly cool shop of professional coiffeurs.

Article by Monica Stouder, Photo’s by Monica Lea Imagery www.monicalea.com

What is the atmosphere of your shop? Manly. Angelo’s Barbershop is a man’s man kind of place, with a big screen TV on a fireplace. As a typical barbershop custom, nothing is politically correct here. Just say what you feel and we all have a great time! Tell us about an amazing client transformation or success story. Maybe not amazing transformation, but we have a lot of older men

clients, some in their 90’s clients who cannot shave themselves anymore. It feels great to provide that service, as some of the men remember watching their fathers get a shave growing up.

Dominic what is your favorite cut to give? Flat top. So flat helicopters can land on them.

Best part of owning AB? Owning our own barbershop is truly awesome. Providing a great hair cut to men is something most men never get at a cookie cutter chain. Here they get a talented barber who has pride in their service and it shows on our client’s heads.

ABOUT KENDALL-JACKSON Their story is as much about a winery as it is the story of one man, his family and a dream. In 1974, our founder Jess Jackson, famously bought an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard in rural Lakeport, California, where he planned to try his hand at creating wine from some of his favorite varietals while on weekends away from his successful career as a San Francisco attorney. “I was attracted by the lifestyle,” Jess said. “I wanted to get away from law and become a farmer.”

“When my family and I founded Kendall-Jackson in 1982, we simply wanted to create extraordinary wine from California’s best vineyards.”

-JESS JACKSON, Founder

By the early 1980s, Jess and his growing family had transformed the orchard into a working winery that produced grapes Jess sold to other wineries. During a fateful harvest in 1980, a large order from another winery was cancelled, and Jess was stuck with a bumper crop of unused grapes: from this the first bottle of Kendall-Jackson was produced. This first bottling, the 1982 Vintner’s Reserve, garnered attention for its unique bright fruitiness. It was an immediate, if modest, hit. Though Jess and his family shipped less than 20,000 cases of that legendary ‘82 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay, the release went on to become the most popular Chardonnay in America. In 1983, Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay won the first Double Platinum Award ever presented by the American Wine Competition, and has gone on to win accolades year after year. Now, almost three decades later, Kendall-Jackson Winery produces an array of super-premium wines whose quality, taste and integrity embody the very spirit of our founder’s mission. In Jess Jackson’s own words, “We grow grapes on our own 15,000 acres of California coastal vineyards. We take the no-compromise, high-road approach to quality required to grow our world-class grapes and produce acclaimed award-winning wines.” Among the wines made in the Jackson Family collection are KendallJackson Wine Estates, Cambria, Stonestreet, Edmeades, La Crema, Cardinale, Lokoya, Hartford Family Winery, Vérité, Carmel Road, MurphyGoode, La Jota, Freemark Abbey, Byron Estates, Arrowood in the United States; Chateau Lassegue in France; Tenuta di Arceno in Italy; Yangarra in Australia; and Calina in Chile. Jackson Family Wines is one of California’s few remaining family-owned winery groups, with family members working fulltime in a variety of positions.

What is unique about your bar?

DOGFISH HEAD FESTINA PÊCHE RICE PUDDING If you’re like me, and love most everything about rice pudding, but always think, “Why???? Why must they ruin this beautiful rice pudding by putting raisins in it?” Blech! I found a way to turn that frown upside down! Beer! See? It worked already! Dogfish Head Festina Pêche is a refreshing neo-Berliner Weisse, with the natural peach flavors woven into the yeast. which makes it, well, just peachy! It’s dry, with a slight sweetness that is fabulous for the summer months, as well as the hot Florida days in fall. This Dogfish Head Festina Pêche Rice Pudding, however, is so good, it’ll be something you’ll want all year long! 2 eggs, beaten INGREDIENTS 2 fresh peaches, finely chopped 1 ½ cups water 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 3/4 cups uncooked rice 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1 1/3 cup milk 1/8 tsp. cloves 3/4 cup + 1 Tbsp. Dogfish Head Festina Pêche 1/8 tsp. cardomom 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 Tbsp. butter 1/4 cup light brown sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. salt DIRECTIONS Bring the water to boil in heavy pan. Add rice. Reduce heat to low. Cover & simmer for about 20 minutes, or until rice is no longer hard (very important!). When rice is ready, add 3/4 cup milk & 3/4 cup Dogfish Head Festina Pêche, sugars, salt and peaches. Stirring constantly, cook over medium low to medium heat, until very creamy, about 20 minutes. Add remaining milk, beaten eggs (slowly), cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, stirring constantly & cooking for about 2 minutes. Add butter, vanilla and Tbs of Dogfish Head Festina Pêche. Enjoy! Brew Time By Marc Wisdom In the Old Country, otherwise known as Bavaria, September brings about the most beloved of all fests; Oktoberfest. Today Oktoberfest is the world’s largest fair held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is a 16-day festival running from late September to the first weekend in October that hosts more than 6 million people from around the world. To provide more on the scope of Oktoberfest, one has only to look at the astounding numbers generated by the event each year. Last year the event was attended by 6.4 million people, who consumed more than nine million liters of beer, ate more than 500,000 roasted chickens and 330,000 sausages. The festival grounds covered 42 acres – approximately the size of 32 Everbank Fields – and contained 14 massive beer tents with room for up to 10,000 partiers. Waitresses at Oktoberfest must be able to carry up to 10 full steins of beer – each weighing five pounds when full – without spilling. To the locals Oktoberfest is known as “die Wies’n,” after the informal name of the fairgrounds. Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations – including Jacksonville’s Jaxtoberfest – modeled after the original Munich event. The beginnings of Oktoberfest harken back to 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12. The happy couple wanted to share their joyous occasion with the citizens of their beloved Munich, so they invited all to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates. The fields were named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s meadow”) in honor of the Crown Princess, and have kept that name ever since, although the locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the “Wies’n”. Nearly 40,000 Bavarians crowded the fields and enjoyed the fanfare and revelry. The event ended with horse races attended by the Royal Family. The decision to repeat the horse races the following year gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest. In 1816, carnival booths began appearing at the event with prizes consisting of silver, porcelain, and jewelry. The founding citizens of Munich assumed responsibility for festival management in 1819 and it was decided to make the Oktoberfest an annual event.

NIGHTLIFE EVENTS

Only beer conforming to the Reinheitsgebot, at a minimum of 13.5% Stammwürze (approximately 6% alcohol by volume) may be served at Oktoberfest. To tie the festival to its hometown, only beers brewed within the city limits of Munich are allowed. Only beers meeting these criteria may be designated Oktoberfest beer. Other similar beers, brewed outside of Munich, are more correctly called Oktoberfest-style.

• Augustiner-Bräu • Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu • Löwenbräu • Paulaner-Bräu • Spatenbräu

In 1950 the festival adopted a ceremonial opening presided over by the incumbent mayor of Munich. In the new tradition, at high noon on the first day of the festival there is a 12-gun salute followed immediately by the mayor tapping and drawing the first beer of the festival. When the first stein is filled, the mayor faces the crowd and shouts, “O’zapft is!” which translates to, “It is tapped!” The mayor then presents the first mug to Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. After the ceremony the beer begins to flow and the party truly fires up. GOLDEN TAP BEER OF THE MONTH Spaten Oktoberfest Marzen was first served at the 1872 Oktoberfest and is used for the ceremonial keg tapping by the Mayor of Munich to kick off the celebration. This traditional beer presents floral notes on the nose and biscuit, herbal and floral flavors. Serve this with traditional German fare like bratwursts or schnitzel. Prost! Marc revels in his German heritage this time of year and can often be found yodeling while wearing his lederhosen. It’s best just to give him another stein of beer and look away. Brew Five Points is a craft beer and espresso bar that recently opened in the historic five points area of riverside. I recently sat down with owner, Jack Twachtman, who shared his philosophy around Brew. “Our concept is a reflection of this neighborhood. We are all about celebrating the craftsman—everything from our drinks to the art and even our furniture. We are all craft.” Brew will focus on craft beer and espresso. “We are bringing an atmosphere that’s focused on community where you can try a local beer, or have a craft cup of espresso. We welcome everyone,” added Twachtman.

The focus on craft beer and espresso makes this the perfect spot to begin and end your day. Before work, stop by and try one of their espressos and pair it with one of their artisan breads and toast. After work, grab a local beer or try one of their hand-mixed beer cocktails.

Suds BIG JOHN’S APRICOT WHEAT, BOLD CITY BREWING

Slightly cloudy, this beer gives off a nice yellow hue with a creamy head. The aroma is predominantly of grain and wheat with subtle notes of apricot and lemon. The flavors follow the nose, but the apricot is definitely more pronounced on the palate. There’s a nice citrus spritz on the finish, which offers a clean and crisp feel. Light, drinkable, and refreshing. This is a perfect summer beer brewed and served locally. Brew Five Points is located at 1024 Park St, Jacksonville, FL 32204. SUDOKU

PROFESSOR DUBIOUS IS THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON IN THE WORLD BY A LARGE MARGIN. HERE, HE DEIGNS TO RESPOND TO YOUR ILL-INFORMED QUERIES. What is the most unusual national flag? - G. Rose: Dogville, IN

Professor Dubious Says: There are generally considered to be three contenders for this title. The Pongolese flag depicts an eagle with second-degree burns and chocolate stains on its beak. This is a reference to a Pongol legend that says that the country was founded by an eagle with seconddegree burns and chocolate stains on its beak. Historians disagree as to the veracity of this story. Astonia has the only national flag not made of cloth. The Astonian flag consists of a fried egg and is generally replaced once a day to avoid odor.

What is different between colors? - S. Lewis: San Francisco, CA

Professor Dubious Says: Violet is the heaviest color, so it always sinks to the bottom

of the rainbow.

Red is the most expensive color, generally costing more than twice as much as blue or green. Silver is the smoothest color, often used for ball bearings and chafe-proof underclothes. Yellow is the least-caloric color, which is why bananas are much better for weight-loss than deepfried beef fat.

Which state was the first to join the union? - M. Mue: Seattle, WA

Professor Dubious Says: For the first 28 years, America consisted of just Connecticut, and was known as The Un-united State of America. Later, it was joined by New Hampshire and became The BFF States. When Pennsylvania and the Boston Sheraton signed on, it became Three States and a Hotel. When New Jersey joined, it insisted on top billing, and the nation, for twelve years, became NJ and Friends. Now the little-known official name of the country is The Republic of the All-United States of North America Reluctantly Including Florida.

Etiquette Essentials By Eric Engel Eccentric people always make me chuckle. They just go through life ignoring every social norm. But being eccentric means there really are no rules of etiquette. My father is an example. Not the best example, but a typical one. One time he decided he wanted an RV, even though there was no way in hell he could afford one. But he could afford an old, rusty school bus, made sometime in the 1950’s. He bought it, took the seats out, and converted it into an RV. This was okay for camping trips, but it was sort of embarrassing when he’d drive us to school in it.

set to work correcting him every time he’d do something “crazy.” It worked. In a short time, we had him well dressed and smelling clean for dinner. He drove a normal minivan instead of one of his beat up jalopies. And no more livestock in the back yard.

Some of his eccentricities were a little harder to deal with. Sometimes he would excuse himself from dinner because he forgot to paint something. Right in the middle of supper he’d just get up and leave. He’d come back fifteen minutes later reeking of paint thinner. It made meals unbearable. If we complained, he’d scoff and tell us not to be so persnickety.

We were all happy for a while… until he developed some weird ticks and habits. He’d whisper to himself and sporadically twitch his hands and feet. We took him to a doctor, who suggested a whole mess of special drugs to help him. During that time, we let go of all the changes we had strived for.

Then there were the dairy goats in our back yard. It was summer time when he got them, and I was fine with the idea. Even an elevenyear-old like myself saw the logic: get goats and never pay for milk. Oh… did I mention we lived in the city? Once school started again, I realized my dad had pulled another good one on me. I got into more fights in the first week than I had the entire previous year.

Soon enough, the ticks disappeared. We assumed the drugs were working. But later, Dad revealed to us that he had never taken any of the drugs. Nor had he followed the special diet or made any other lifestyle changes.

Eventually, my siblings and I got tired of it all. We decided to teach Dad some etiquette. We wanted him socially enhanced, so we

He reverted back to his old ways very quickly, because no one was pushing him.

It was my mom who finally pointed out that the only real change was in us—we had stopped bugging him about etiquette. And so here’s the rule for etiquette concerning eccentric people: Let them be.

September Horoscope Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19)

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

So you got your head in the clouds this month looking for someone. Well… you’re looking in the right place, because this month down here on earth things aren’t looking good. I would try to be optimistic, but what’s the point, it’s not going to help.

You’re in a sticky spot this month. That clinger you can’t rid of may be your best bet for companionship, unless you prefer Netflix and a lonely couch. So if you don’t want to be alone you will have to endure complete suffocating attention from the clinger.

Your horoscope is actually looking good this month. The Moon is gliding into your 5th house of Romance or something corny like that. Basically what you need to know is you are compatible with practically everyone this month. I kind of like those odds and so should you.

Single Cancers, it’s not looking too good for you this month. I would normally suggest looking to social media and updating your online profile for some romance, but with your luck this month it would be pointless. You couldn’t pay to find romance right now, or could you…

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

You should be ready to rock, roll, play, pursue and pleasure this month. That’s what I said. Rock, roll, play, pursue and pleasure. All of them, but it MUST be in that order. If you go putting roll after pleasure, then it will mess up the matrix. Something about a New Moon in your spirit or something. Regardless, I would be looking forward to the pursuing.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Thoughts of returning to an old flame will come up this month, but you got to push him/her to the back burner. Way, way back burner. It’s your birthday!! So look to the front burner and see what’s cooking up there. Something spicy would be my hope.

This is going to be a very good social month for you Libra. I would say because Venus and Mars are both in your sign, but honestly, I don’t know what that means. Let’s just call it a hunch, which is all one really needs. Flirt. Be conversational. Live a little.

Coupled Scorpio’s are not seeing eye to eye this month. If you have a mate, prepare for a storm. Start marking your territory and hide what you find valuable. And I don’t mean some little disagreement. I mean deal breaker stuff. Bad moon on the rise friend.

Local competitor horoscope this month stated, “Being friendly without coming on too strong puts you in the best possible position to connect with someone new.” Life is short. Full court press!! Otherwise they may think you only want to be friends, not lovers. These are love horoscopes, not friend horoscopes.

Seems life is going to be so busy for you, love isn’t going to be a top priority this month. Not always a bad thing. If you don’t get your life in order, not too many people will be finding you desirable. “Jobless, living with parents, video game aficionado” are not adjectives that are appealing regardless of how “fun” or “attractive” you are.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Transition is in your future. So if things have been good lately… yeah, sorry. Tough luck is coming your way. Things been in the crapper recently, well… hey, hey, hey things should start coming up roses. Life is a rollercoaster. I like rollercoasters. They’re fun.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

I read something somewhere about Mars being energetic in your 8th House of Intimacy, thus creating a really saucy relationship month for you. Did you even know you had eight houses of intimacy? I can’t even find one, let alone eight! Seize this opportunity while it lasts.
