The Jacksonville Jaguars are faithfully supported by teal and gold clad fans at every game, ready to cheer the team to victory. On and off EverBank Field, the Jaguars have an incredible impact on the city of Jacksonville.

When the (former) Jacksonville Suns Minor League Baseball team changed its name, logo and branding to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp last November, you must admit that one of the first things you probably said to yourself (amid a chuckle or two) was, “What?” In the months following the news, the Jumbo Shrimp front office took to the media in the hopes of getting the city pumped up to cheer on the newly-proclaimed “Crustacean Nation.” The new name and colorful shrimp character of the AA affiliate of the Major League Baseball Miami Marlins (whose Class A advanced affiliate is the Jupiter Hammerheads, by the way) seemed to be catching on. As April 12 opening day approached, the team touted its revamped food menu and upcoming season-long promotional events, held a contest to name the new Shrimp mascot, and even hosted a “Shrimp & Suds” Craft Beer Fest at the ballpark. The team netted some pretty awesome results, too, because a record opening day crowd of 10,477 was on hand at the Baseball Grounds for the home opener against the Chattanooga Lookouts. The fans were treated to a 7-1 Jumbo Shrimp victory and a fireworks display following the game. According to a press release, attendance of 41,276 during the opening Jumbo Shrimp homestand April 12-16 was the highest attended series in the history of the Baseball Grounds. The figure represents an increase of 57 percent over last season. It seems the Jumbo Shrimp have already made their mark on Jacksonville.

Sports in Jacksonville is big business – and that effort is led by the Jacksonville Sports Council. In the past year alone, sports tourism generated over $292 million of economic impact for Northeast Florida through a host of events including the Navy-Notre Dame football game, NCAA Track Regionals, SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament and USA Curling Nationals, as well as annual events like the Georgia/ Florida game, THE PLAYERS Championship and the TaxSlayer Bowl. With a mission to utilize professional, amateur and youth sports to enhance and positively impact the quality of life and pride for our community while generating economic impact and growth, JAXSPORTS is changing Jacksonville. Events last year helped to 6

support over 40,000 local jobs and provided countless hours of exposure on national and international television highlighting Jacksonville to the world – plus, more than $500,000 was given back to local charities. 1st Place Sports: Running Jacksonville Since 1978 By Jenn Leonard
It all began in 1978. Husband and wife team Doug and Jane Alred, dedicated runners themselves, decided to become business partners and take their passion for the sport to the next level. Hoping to appeal to the running community, they opened the first 1st Place Sports retail store on Baymeadows Road. “Once we had the first store open, we needed a way to attract runners to our new business, so we thought a running event from our store would be the perfect way to accomplish that goal,” Doug Alred said. “Little did we know that this was the beginning of a perfect business model for success.” Now, almost 40 years later, that dream has taken firm root in the Jacksonville running community. There are six retail locations, offering everything from running and walking shoes and apparel to GPS watches and recovery aids. The 1st Place Sports Race Division is responsible for the management or timing of almost 100 events a year across the northeast Florida region. “We hope that 1st Place Sports will always be the headquarters for running in North Florida,” said Jane Alred.

Meochia Clayton’s son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 4 in the late 1990s. At that point, all of her current and future decisions were made based on the “diagnosis.” She wanted to make a better, more fulfilling life for her son and others living with autism and other disabilities. Clayton decided to further her education and train as a Special Needs Advocate by earning a M.S. Degree in Special Education Law. She always loved to travel and realized her son enjoyed traveling also. After a successful cruise, she decided that this experience must be shared with others.

Maritime covers a large portion of commercial, transportation, and even some criminal law.

Often in a family law dispute involving children, whether that be a divorce or a paternity action, extracurricular activities, including sports, become an issue. Prior to a trial, the parties are given an opportunity to mediate to reach an amicable resolution without court intervention. Generally, the parties will agree to: 1. Split the costs of all mutually agreed upon extracurricular activities, including sports, or 2. The party enrolling the child in the sport will pay 100 percent of the costs. In addition, the parents should communicate regarding the activities. This includes activity information, schedules, etc. In the event the matter goes to trial, generally the courts will not involve themselves in extracurricular activities, absent some compelling reason that it is in the best interest of the child. Another question we receive is if the costs associated with extracurricular activities are considered child support? The answer is “no.” Those out of pocket expenses are separate from child support, which is governed by statute. Lastly, extracurricular activities may come into play when one parent refuses or rarely attends. What’s a Parenting Plan, and Why do I need one?
In most divorce cases involving children, a parenting plan is created to assist the parents with the task of shared parenting. Florida Statutes Chapter 61.13 governs the creation, modification and interpretation of parenting plans. Put simply, a parenting plan is a document approved by the court that describes the responsibilities of who will perform which aspects of child-care in a shared parenting situation.

While working together to create a parenting plan can be difficult, it can save both money and time, and gives more control over the personal aspects of parenting. There are many aspects of a parenting plan which you will need to work out, but the key points of a successful arrangement generally revolve around five different aspects: • Overnight stays • Drop off and pick up • Activity time, including vacations and holidays • Daily decisions (bed time, chores, homework, and so on) • Major decisions (education, medical, etc.) In an ideal parenting plan, parents will share time and decision-making. Always remember—you may no longer be married, but you will still be parents. Graduations, birthdays and other celebrations will likely be celebrated together, and if you can approach those situations with clearly defined expectations, you’ll be able to focus on celebrating, rather than navigating conflict. One of the best ways to start collaborating is to simply make a list of your own expectations before coming together to discuss what each of you want. Be mindful of the parenting tasks each of you customarily performed, and be realistic as to how you’ll divide the responsibilities of childcare in the future. Even though you no longer share a household, you still share both the joys and responsibilities of bringing up the child, so being fair and flexible goes a long way to ensuring that the transition between parents is smooth for the child. Although it may take a lot of effort to work with your future ex-spouse to find a way to parent together, it is worth it in the long-term aspects of your child’s life. When you demonstrate peaceful decision-making, your children have an opportunity to learn from your positive example. It is always a good idea to have your divorce attorney look over your parenting plan before it is filed with the court. Catherine Lewis is a mixed media artist, abstract painter, photographer and member of The Art Center at the Landing.

“My mixed media exploration emerged first as I used eggshells to add texture to tree bark in my landscape paintings,” said Lewis. “The more I worked with the shells, the more I began to appreciate the form and feel of the organic material.”
Heather Blanton is a Jacksonville-born artist currently living in St. Augustine. She creates paintings typically depicting whimsical sports scenes with heavy textures and rich mica paints. Charcoals, pencil and paper sometimes make it into her paintings as well, but acrylics are her main medium.

Expanding on her fascination with organic materials, Lewis has begun experimenting with camera-less photography making photograms and lumens prints to create a “Petals & Lace” series.
Blanton is a sports painter with emphasis on marathon and cycling paintings, but a huge body of work also contains golf, swimming, skiing and more. All of her work is original and copyrighted with the Library of Congress. Each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and are numbered chronologically as completed.
“I love the historical aspect of this process which dates back to the 1830s when Henry Talbot created photogenic drawings.” Using a similar process, Lewis composes lily petals and lace on photo sensitized paper, sandwiches under glass, and places outdoors on a sunny day to expose. The last step is to fix the image, wash and dry. “I enjoy the chance aspect of this process; you can’t exactly predict your results, and that’s exciting to me as an artist.”

MAMMA MIA! – THE FAREWELL TOUR AT THRASHER-HORNE CENTER

The world renowned musical “MAMMA MIA!” started out in London, live for the first time in front of a paying audience. Ever since that first showing, audiences have had the same reaction to this musical – laughter and dancing in the aisles along with the cast. In those few years, “MAMMA MIA!” has been performed in 440 major cities and seen by over 60 million people. But wherever it plays, its creators have never lost sight of what they were seeking to achieve, and it helps to explain how and why it has achieved such a remarkable resonance and relevance. In this case, the songs came first – and it was producer Judy Craymer’s genius to spot their theatrical potential so early on – she also had to find a way of unlocking that potential, with a story strong enough to carry them. “I knew from the outset that “MAMMA MIA!” had to be much more than just an ABBA compilation or tribute show,” she comments. “The story had to be as infectious as the music and provide a strong feel-good factor.” That, however, is easier said than done, and thus began Craymer’s decade-long crusade to find it and bring it to the stage. The producer, who at the time was a stage manager on the original London production of Cats in 1981, had subsequently joined Tim Rice’s production company. It was there, while working as executive producer on the West End production of his and Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ first post-ABBA project Chess, that she was first bowled over by Benny and Björn. The playwright Catherine Johnson, who was commissioned to write the book for “MAMMA MIA!,” fortunately found plenty of drama in them. Indeed, a plot came out of them. Not only are they frequently complete stories within themselves, but she also discovered something else important: that many of the early ABBA songs were more innocent, naive and teenage-orientated, whereas later on they became more mature and reflective. And, of course, it was women who sang them. That suggested a story about two generations of women, namely a mother and a daughter. The show also happily reconciles the worlds of pop music and musical theatre that were once indivisible. “MAMMA MIA!” is a sophisticated, but not pretentious, musical that re-introduces the familiarity of a pop idiom to the theatre. “MAMMA MIA!” provides a thrilling example of how enhanced life can be with song and dance. 16

Putting the Brakes on the Summer Slide Summer is here! But along with warmer weather, trips to the pool and the Fourth of July, comes a not-so-fun reality... the summer slide. What is the summer slide? Summer slide describes what happens when young minds sit idle for three months. One study revealed that kids lose about 2.6 months of their math skills and approximately 2 months of reading skills during summer break. As a former teacher, a concern when school started back up in the fall was having to spend too much time trying to get students back up to speed before proceeding to the new information for that year. So what’s a parent to do? I’m so glad you asked! As always, WJCT has you and your children covered. We have some tips to help your little ones of all ages put the brakes on the Summer Slide! • Watch WJCT-TV! This summer, you can rely on PBS KIDS and WJCT to provide a positive learning experience that is also fun. With school being out, there is more time to tune into the PBS KIDS programs your kids love - more “Wild Kratts,” more “Splash and Bubbles,” more “Nature Cat” - AND more of the key learning they need to stay ahead of the summer slump. • Have your kids teach you about what they learned at school. Focus on a major subject, such as math or science. If
your third grader had to memorize the multiplication table, have them quiz you on it during the summer between third and fourth grade. It will also be fun for the kids to see how smart you are! • Read, read, read! Read with your child every day, many times a day. Read books, signs, posters—anything with words. Read in the morning, in the afternoon and at night. Read at the park, in the living room, at the pool. Read print everywhere you can find it! • Stimulate their minds. You can also keep kids stimulated by taking them on outings, such as a children’s museum, the zoo, an art museum, the theater or a professional baseball game. So keep kids engaged in learning this summer. (But don’t tell them that they’re going to learn anything because then they’ll resist!) Kids need to find a great way to escape the summer heat. Are they tired of the pool? Try changing it up with an inexpensive morning movie! The 2017 Summer Movie Express runs for 9 weeks with select titles playing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. Admission to these films during the Summer Movie Express is $1 and a portion of the proceeds goes to the Will Rogers Institute. All movies start at 10 a.m. and are rated PG. Our metabolism slows two percent every decade after 20 years of age and five percent every decade after 40 years of age. Let’s face it…that sucks! So, what can you do to fight back against father time? Countless studies and research articles are frequently released about how to speed up metabolism. As much as we all wish it were true, there is no magic pill or fad diet that is going make your metabolism race. Check out some quick tips and tricks that have been statistically proven to speed up metabolism!
Gardening is a great way to get kids active, outdoors and doing good for the earth! Through the Urban Kids Gardening Program, kids can learn about gardening and all the things that go along with growing your own food! (Ages 5-8)
EATING MORE FREQUENTLY. Eat every three hours to keep your metabolism racing. Typically, three meals and two small snacks throughout the day should do the trick! WATER INTAKE. Studies show those who drink eight or more glasses of water per day burn more calories than those who only drink four glasses of water per day. ICE COLD WATER. Six glasses of ice cold water per day have been shown to burn ten extra calories per day. It may not seem like a lot, but that equates to one pound per year! SLEEP. It is recommended to get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep causes alterations in glucose metabolism leading to insulin resistance, increased appetite, and reduced energy expenditures. WORKING OUT. Aerobic and strength training have benefits. Strength training can elevate your metabolism for about three hours post workout. The more lean/muscle mass you have the more you burn… • Muscle Mass: burns 40 calories per pound of lean mass per day. • Fat Mass: burns two calories per pound of fat mass per day. HIGH(ER) PROTEIN DIETS. Protein requires 25 percent more energy to digest than carbs and fat. GREEN TEA. Energy expenditure is increased by four percent for 24 hours after 90 mg of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)—the most significant phytochemical in green tea.

part about your business? DOC: Mostly meeting the different people. We see people of all ages, all parts of Jacksonville. And we get to learn a little about Jacksonville from them.
BUZZ: What made you want to get

Yes, I am a registered dietitian and yes—I hate dieting. I never want you to feel like you are on a diet. What do you think of when you hear the word diet? The most common responses I get are: restriction, deprivation, calorie cutting, hunger and negativity. This is far from what I want for you. When you hear the word diet, I want to challenge you to think of simply what you eat and drink each day. All food and beverages have the potential to nourish to our body and supply our body with energy. For so long, dieting has been looked at negatively. We try a diet for one week (maybe two weeks if we have a lot of will power). Then we go right back to our old food habits because it is too hard, too restricted, too depriving and so on. It is time to kick “dieting” to the curb and make a lifestyle change. What if I told you that you could enjoy eating again and not feel shameful after eating a cookie? As a registered dietitian, I am licensed to assess a person’s caloric and macronutrient needs based on their height, weight, age, gender, activity level and lifestyle. Please note: I am not the food police. My job is to help people fuel their bodies with food and make sure that they enjoy what they are eating. Because in the end, if you don’t enjoy what you are eating, it’s never going to stick. Have questions about dieting? Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

Table 1 in Ponte Vedra is a great casual spot for food and libation. There is ample parking and the atmosphere is comfortable with dark lighting and an industrial chic motif. When I entered the restaurant, the hostess quickly sat me. David, my server, was at my table within moments. All good percursors to a good experience. The menu at Table 1 features salads, sandwiches, meat, fish and chicken entrees and flatbreads smattered with a nice array of appetizers.

Brie was the theme of my food adventure on this visit. I choose the house Mushroom and Brie soup with the Artisan Cheese Plate to start things off. The soup was absolutely delicious, not too salty as some Brie-based bisques go, and thick with mushrooms. The cheese plate appetizer was a nice array of cheeses with honey and thinly sliced prosciutto and would be considered a good portion for two people. During the course of my intro-to-the-entrée nosh, I watched as Andre the general manager made his way around the restaurant greeting and gauging experiences from Table 1 patrons. He made it a point to make sure everyone, including myself, was enjoying the environment and menu. Kudos to having great management on the floor, Table 1! According to the GM, most of Table 1’s food items are locally or regionally sourced, and a majority of the menu elements are homemade and hand prepared. The Turkey, Pear and Brie flatbread was a little heavy on the honey mustard drizzle, but was still a delicious departure from a traditional flat-in-flavor flatbread. This doughy delight had small chunks of pear and a good smoked turkey taste. A very nice bite indeed! All-in-all the price points were OK, but the food and service were definitely above average. Coupled with a creative menu, I recommend grabbing some friends and trying the food (and incredible Happy Hour) at Table 1.
Buzzworthy Note:
Table 1 has live entertainment every Wed – Sat, has ½ price on all bottled wine on Saturdays and has an amazing Happy Hour. Enjoy 2 for 1 every day on a long list of select cocktails, wines, domestics and bar apps from 4-7 p.m. and then AGAIN from 9-11 p.m.! Additionally, Table 1 hosts a Wine Down Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with $15 wine sampling and ½ price apps.

Opting for the chicken & waffles, which features 2 fried buttermilk chicken sausages served on maple waffles topped with collard greens and a sweet chili sauce, I then chose a side of their home fries to compliment the dish. I was tempted to double down on the collard greens as they are a personal favorite of mine being raised very Southern, but the home fries just seemed to be calling my name. The buttermilk chicken sausage is a fried nugget of awesome, with a crispy crust on the casing and a succulent interior, while the maple waffles provide the perfect delivery system leaving nothing more for your heart to desire. Just when you think that’s all you need, they toss on some of the best collards I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting, and drizzle the whole thing with a sweet chili sauce that opens the flavor profile to a new level. The home fries are nothing extraordinary, but they’re fried to a beautiful golden crisp and are the perfect addition to the meal. So if you’re a fan of meat in tube form (and who isn’t?), make sure you give A Flying Sausage a try next time you see them out and about. They’ll make you believe.
The simple sausage has evolved into a true culinary art form. A Flying Sausage food truck is no different. They’re bringing imaginative variations on the typical sausage format to the streets of Jacksonville, pairing unique tubular creations with atypical serving options. Be it their lamb sausage gyro on a homemade rosemary flatbread to the choice I went with, the chicken & waffles, A Flying Sausage seems set on wowing the masses with new sausages that come from either the mind of a mad man or an absolute genius. The day I ventured over to check them out, they were offering BBQ sausage sliders, chorizo tacos, a smoked sausage, a hot Italian sausage, and their iconic chicken & waffles. Can you give us an overview of your professional history here in Jacksonville? I opened Taverna working for Sam Efron for about three and a half years. The food scene in Jacksonville was beginning to take hold, so I got in on the ground floor. The next opportunity took me to Restaurant Orsay, then the Orsay group asked me to help with the opening of Black Sheep in Five Points. It has been “go, go” since then and now I am here opening Black Sheep Downtown in conjunction with Intuition Ale works. How long have you been cooking professionally? Professionally fourteen years. I did some cooking here and there when I was in school, then covered the front of house work, I worked just about every station except bartending.

There are so many cultures that impact our food; we may not realize it.

Jacksonville Scene sports leagues and social events have been enhancing the local community for 12 years and counting. The mission of the organization has always been to stay local and get charities involved. Jacksonville Scene allows individuals and teams to be a part of co-ed leagues and social events to interconnect with one another in a fun and exciting way. Any sport that you can think of, Jacksonville Scene probably hosts a league for it. There are the common sports teams like football, baseball and basketball, but there are also the less ordinary sports such as bowling, dodgeball, kickball, beer pong, cornhole and more.
The key to the success of this organization has been to always keep things fun. The atmosphere is lively at all sporting and social events. Getting involved is a great excuse to meet up with friends, old and new, and to blow off some steam throughout a stressful week. After games, there are specific venues that sponsor the events and will typically offer food or drink specials for those participating in the outing, yet another bonus of getting involved. As warmer temperatures are approaching, indoor volleyball and bowling are starting to become more popular. Seasonal leagues run all through the week and they typically last 5 to 10 weeks. Price of registration includes equipment and administration at all events.
Jacksonville Scene is special because it allows members to individually register, giving those who don’t already have a team the opportunity to be a part of one and connect with people in the area who have similar interests. In an interview with founder of Jacksonville Scene, Jason Ryan, BUZZ asked what has changed about him since he created the organization. He said that the biggest difference was starting out in Jacksonville, going from not knowing anyone in a new city to now having countless friendships and large groups of people to spend time with while doing things they enjoy together. To date, Ryan has witnessed several marriages of couples that met and were kindled through Jacksonville Scene. Ryan says his favorite aspect of Jacksonville Scene is seeing people come together, forming new relationships that never would have occurred if it weren’t for the organization and the events they host. Over the years, a lot of the teams and individuals that sign up for leagues or social events re-sign in the future because they enjoy the comradery it allowed them to be a part of. This organization continues to enhance the Jacksonville community.

ON CAMPUS: Jacksonville Cannons The Jacksonville Cannons are Jacksonville’s very own professional Ultimate Frisbee team, a franchise in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). The AUDL is comprised of 24 teams, 20 in the US and 4 in Canada. The AUDL has existed for six years, with the South Division joining three years ago. South Division teams include: Jacksonville Cannons, Atlanta Hustle, Austin Sol, Raleigh Flyers, Dallas Roughnecks and Nashville NightWatch. The Cannons play 14 regular season games, 7 away and 7 home, played at The Bolles School’s football stadium. The game is played on a football field, but with 20-yard end zones starting at the football 10-yard line. The game is four quarters of 12 minutes each. Active rosters are 20 players deep with seven of those players on the field for each team at a time. Ultimate Frisbee is action packed and full of highlights - in fact, the Cannons have already been on SportsCenter once this season! Come watch the action at The Bolles School and cheer your Cannons on to victory. BOOM!

THE PLAYERS Championship winner was the youngest to win the event at TPC Sawgrass at 21 years of age. Adam Scott had won the 2004 PLAYERS at the age of 23. Kim beat the best field in golf with a tremendous weekend of play. He made just one bogey in the final 36 holes to win by three shots.
The Jacksonville Jaguars made LSU running back Leonard Fournette the first pick in this year’s draft. Fournette ran for more than 3,800 yards and scored 40 rushing touchdowns while in college. Fournette joins a Jaguars backfield that includes TJ Yeldon and Chris Ivory.

The Jaguars drafted their future left tackle with their second-round pick. Robinson played his college football at Alabama. As of now, the plan is for Robinson to compete with Branden Albert for the starting left tackle job. What a performance by the golfer from Lake City in THE PLAYERS. Barber almost missed the cut on Friday, but he made it on the line and wound up finishing top 20 by shooting one under par. Dave Mason, the legendary British rocker and co-founder of psychedelic band Traffic, is bringing his “Alone Together Again” tour to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. Best known for his soulful voice and unsurpassed guitar playing, and with a career spanning five decades, British singer-songwriter, guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason has worn many hats over the years. Mason has played, recorded, and performed with notable musicians such as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Steve Winwood and Fleetwood Mac. In 2004, Mason was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of Traffic. Hailing from Worcester, England, Mason first found fame with ‘60s psychedelic rock group Traffic – writing hit tunes like “Feelin’ Alright” and “Hole in My Shoe.” In the late 1960s, Mason played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix’s iconic version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” In 1970, Mason wrote his solo album “Alone Together,” which has become one of America’s most beloved classic rock albums. Nearly 50 years later and more than a dozen solo albums in his repertoire, Mason will revisit his classic masterpiece on his new “Alone Together Again” U.S. tour which will include fan favorites like “All Along the Watchtower” and “Feelin’ Alright,” in addition to the album’s classic songs.

Live Nation and Bold Events announced that Diana Ross is bringing her “In the Name of Love” tour to Daily’s Place on June 28 at 8 p.m. In a remarkable career spanning six decades, Diana Ross has established herself as the consummate artist as well as one of the most iconic female singers of all time. Singer and actress Diana Ross was part of the 1960s pop/soul trio the Supremes before embarking on a successful solo career, also starring in such films as “Lady Sings the Blues” and “The Wiz.” Ross was lead singer of the world-renowned Motown group The Supremes, who achieved the unprecedented feat of 12 No. 1 singles in the U.S. Ross left for a solo career in 1969, later reaching No. 1 with hits like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Love Hangover.” Among an array of albums, other hit songs for Ross from the 1970s included “Touch Me in the Morning,” and “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To),” both reaching No. 1 as well. Ross continued to top the charts and later was named “Female Entertainer of the Century” by Billboard magazine. Despite her personal and professional ups and downs, Ross has withstood the test of time as a performer with a career that spans more than four decades. She has won several major awards, including a Golden Globe, a Tony and several American Music Awards. In 1988, Ross was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Supremes. She was awarded for her hard work again in 2007, when she was presented with Black Entertainment Television’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2016, she was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

Florida-Grown Hops to Your Glass: A First of Its Kind FMBrewing.com Last week, First Magnitude Brewing Company (Gainesville) released a limited batch of a true original pale ale. The beer is not only a product of First Magnitude’s brewing team, but it’s also a testament to advances in scientific research. The brewery’s release of “Apopka Hop Pale Ale” marked the first beer brewed exclusively with 100 percent Florida-grown hops. While a beer brewed with six hops isn’t unusual, when those six hops were all grown and harvested solely in Florida, it’s unique, considering that Florida’s hot climate isn’t typically thought of as conducive to hops. What started out as a hobby for University of Florida’s Brian Pearson about five years ago has bloomed into a funded university research program. Pearson, an assistant professor of environmental horticulture at the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), completed his first successful trial in 2012. Last year, when word of Pearson’s research at the Mid-Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka became widely known, he began fielding calls from citrus growers interested in learning about “diversifying their crops with hops,” and touring the production facility. “We’ve lit a fire of curiosity in these growers because of our successful trials,” Pearson says. Still, there’s cautious optimism until further determination of whether local
hops production can be profitable. Although he sees success, he adds that “the biggest production challenge we’ve faced is low yield.” Using exploratory horticultural techniques, the team has been able to make strides in production, making its way toward becoming more competitive. Research continues into next year. Can hops take the heat of Florida? In a research paper originally published in October 2013, Pearson concludes that they can. The USDA awarded Pearson’s team a two-year, $158,000 grant that expires at the end of 2017, and they are pursuing additional funding sources. “Getting research dollars to expeditiously continue this effort is the missing piece right now,” he said. “We’re currently cultivating 20 varieties of hops here at our research facility as part of a two-year trial.” According to First Magnitude, the beer is a “bright, floral, easy-drinking pale ale.” The limited supplies of the beer at the brewery’s tap room didn’t last too long, as the initial release on draft and in bottles sold out in less than two hours, according to the brewery’s social media pages. The brewery plans to brew the beer again.
