Welcome to Savannah

MEMBER Savannah Area Tourism Leadership Council Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce

With the comfortable temperatures and sunny days, September and October beg locals and visitors alike to stay outside. Our beautifully historic town doesn’t just go by the Hostess City of the South and Georgia’s First City; Savannah has also been named one of “America’s Coziest Cities” by The Huffington Post, “America’s Best Food Cities” by Condé Nast Traveler, one of the “Most Romantic Destinations in the U.S.” by DatingAdvice.com and one of the “Top 14 Travel Destinations for 2015” by Ebony. Whether it be the moss-draped trees that create tunnels over streets, the huge historic buildings downtown, the brick sidewalks stretching through scenic squares, or the renovated and revived buildings that date back to the 1700s, there’s something extra special about Savannah that makes vacations and days off magical. It’s here you’ll find an array of delectable dining options, from fresh seafood joints on River Street and innovative and adventurous foodie restaurants on Bay Street to late-night bars around City Market. But that’s just the beginning! Pizza and ice cream parlors, sandwich and candy shops, cantinas and diners that serve Southern cooking at its best are spread all around town, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. It’s alongside all of the eateries that clothing and accessory

boutiques, small souvenir shops, antique markets and all kinds of unique shops sit with cute décor set in their windows and wooden signs hanging out front, inviting bustling bodies inside. But with the comfortable temperatures and sunny days, September and October beg locals and visitors alike to stay outside. The fall months are one of the best and most popular times to see and experience the history and mystery of Savannah. It’s the festival season when day-, week- and month-long events devoted to everything from films and folk music to craft beer and bacon take over River Street, Broughton Street and venues all across downtown Savannah. You can find all about these fall fests and the others that are going on by checking out our Calendar of Events! And if you’re looking to learn a little bit more about our Coastal Empire, then be sure to go to Savannah.com. Whether you want to find out about the battles fought at Fort Pulaski or the ghost stories hidden behind cemetery gates, you’ll find it there. We hope you have a wonderful time wandering Savannah’s cobblestone streets, taking in the old town charm the city and its residents offer up and we hope to see you again soon! Please feel free to e-mail us with any comments, questions or suggestions at scene@savannah. com. We love to hear from you!

M

ixed-media artist, lover of nature and adopted Savannahian Tiffani Taylor has become somewhat of a prominent poppy in Savannah’s art scene. Infusing poetry and sheet music into her luscious landscapes and creating a whole lifestyle line around that collection has allowed her to grow in ways unseen. She’s transformed from a student selling paintings from her bicycle to opening galleries in Savannah and even France, where she spent her summer painting, making pottery and showing off her work in a historic cave that was transformed into a serene shop on the hillside village of Lacoste. But now she’s back in her gorgeous gallery on Whitaker Street, laden with poppy paintings and scenic sights of Savannah to kick off the next season of Savannah’s second Saturday Art Walk. Taylor, who started her business during her third year of college, founded the Savannah Art Walk in the spring with hopes to bring a revival of art to the Coastal Empire and help artists all around the Historic District with an inspiring and positive event. “This is my opportunity to help our downtown artists who aren’t covered by First Friday Art March,” said Taylor. “A lot of them are hiding so I think our Art Walk brings them to light, on the map and on our website. I’ve found

20 SAVANNAH SCENE September-October 2015

that even during the middle of the month, we’re able to hand out these maps so people can find out what other kind of art is here. It’s not just for Saturday. This is a tool and an asset for all of our galleries yearlong.” On September 12, October 10 and every second Saturday of the month, the Art Walk kicks off at 4 p.m. at Rocks on the Roof and from there guests can head over to Tiffani’s gallery, take a stroll around town touring the 29 other galleries participating in the Art Walk and end the night at 8 p.m. with an after party at Andaz. “Our mission is to create an inspiring and positive event for our community,” said Taylor. September-October 2015 SAVANNAH SCENE 39

HAUNTED SITES IN SAVANNAH By Sofia Fernandez

One of the most haunted cities in America, Savannah is a Southern belle with a troubled past, a city where the cobblestones cover entire cemeteries and the historic homes are not all they seem. Here are some of Savannah’s most haunted – and most loved – supernatural sites and the stories that surround them. Bonaventure Cemetery ~

It’s no shock that we would start with Bonaventure Cemetery, an enchanting, 160-acre historical cemetery. Although not Savannah’s oldest, Bonaventure remains the largest public cemetery and the most famous. One of the most touching tales told about the cemetery is about Little Gracie Watson. She was buried in 1889 when she was 6 years old. Her parents managed the Pulaski Hotel on Johnson Square, where the little girl was loved by everyone she came across. She would greet guests upon arrival, entertain them with songs and play outside in Johnson Square. The charming Little Gracie died two days before Easter. Her mourning father commissioned a life-like sculpture of her, which now sits on Little Gracie’s tomb. There’s been supposed sightings of the statue walking about the cemetery grounds at night and of Little Gracie herself playing in Johnson Square. But her story has captured more hearts than those of supernatural aficionados: the wrought iron fence that surrounds her grave is always adorned with flowers, cards and toys for Gracie to enjoy in the afterlife.

17Hundred90 Inn & Restaurant ~

This historic inn and restaurant in the heart of Downtown Savannah has been in service for over a hundred years and, unsurprisingly, 17Hundred90 Inn & Restaurant has amassed a collection of spooky stories unlike any other establishment in the city. 40 SAVANNAH SCENE September-October 2015

The famous story that surrounds the inn and restaurant is that of Anne Powell’s, a young woman who was seduced by a sailor, although accounts vary on the specific circumstances. She flung herself from Room 204 to her death. Visitors and guests claim that it is her spirit who hides their trinkets in the inn’s rooms. Anne is also said to spread women’s nightwear on the bed, as if to wear it and caress men’s cheeks, watching over them while they sleep. Anne’s story is so popular that ghost-hunting visitors request Room 204 months in advance in hopes of running into her.

Moon River Brewing Company ~

Moon River is a brewery, pub and restaurant famous for its local haunts. It has been featured in paranormal TV specials and is a well-loved stop for ghost tour guides. Staff and patrons have witnessed objects being thrown by unseen forces and felt the touch of unseen hands. Toby, one of the famous ghosts, spends his time in the billiard room, either at the bar or pushing customers and staff. Tour-goers visiting the upstairs spaces – where Savannah’s first hotel used to be – have spoken of feeling slight touches or downright slaps and a couple have seen a woman in period clothing. Moon River Brewing Company has been referred to as the most haunted sight in Savannah and with good reason: it’s the only place listed here that continues to deliver new stories of supernatural experiences to date. savannah.com

Shopping on Wright Square By Sofia Fernandez

Wright Square is just the beginning of downtown Savannah’s shopping hub. You’ll stop at the antique shops and the cafes, so why not the quirky shops, too? Oliver Bentleys

There’s no need to say it: Savannah loves dogs. It’s no surprise that Oliver Bentleys, a business dedicated to giving your best friend organic, gluten-free treats, was born in Savannah.

to Savannah to share their stylish kicks. Shoes range from black business pumps and ankle booties to zebra-striped heels with yellow feathers. Customers are sure to be wowed by some of the crazy and fun heels they have, while also being able to find something that suits them.

The Olfactory

Eric Zimmerman, owner (of the shop and of two sweet pups), even confesses to having a couple with his coffee every morning. The biscuits and biscuit bites are made for dogs with sensitive digestion, with no additives or fillers. It’s a simple combination of fresh ginger, Savannah Bee Company honey and molasses. Oliver Bentleys also provides visitors with walking dog tours for you and your pet, which can be scheduled by calling (912) 201-1688.

Magnolia’s of Savannah

This unique gift shop has been on Bull Street for years, catching the eye of passersby with their window display of Halloween spooks year-round. Here, you’ll find collectibles, graphic t-shirts (“Boo, y’all”) and Savannah label wine.

Manager Tammie Huffstutler works diligently to keep the store stocked with local and regional artists’ wares, such as Lori Mitchell’s papier mâché figurines and Kim Corell’s all-natural toiletries. Magnolia’s has a Halloween room no matter the season, where they display lenticular pictures.

Shoe Be Do!

This shoe shop just made Wright Square its home in March, bringing with it shoes from all over the world. Owners Andre Noujaim and Eric Snyder started the franchise in New Orleans but brought their business 54 SAVANNAH SCENE September-October 2015

The newest addition to the Wright Square area, The Olfactory seeks to make their customers feel good. Owners Jennifer Armstrong and Mark Rojas have created a store that, from the rustic decoration to the custom-made counter, echoes of the Old World. And their products are not far behind. You’ll find bar soaps and scents made by the monks of Santa Maria Novella or Number Six After Shave by Caswell-Massey, the same aftershave George Washington used back in the day. Infused spices are stacked on the counter, working Victorian telephones are on display and antique wooden toys sit on a shelf waiting to be played with. savannah.com
