Sangria Seduction By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

This Spanish wine punch is a must for summer.

anything goes. Melons, berries, apples, peaches, apricots or even tropical fruits can be sliced and added.

Most of us experienced a long cold winter and are looking forward to warm weather fun. For me, that means a balmy Lowcountry cook-out with a refreshing pitcher of sangria. Sangria, a popular wine punch enjoyed for centuries, originated in Spain. There is no one “authentic” recipe, which is part of the beauty of sangria. It’s a drink that showcases the local fresh ingredients of the region and season. Best of all, sangria is fun and easy to make. There are no exact measurements. How you make it depends on your taste and available ingredients. The basic recipe calls for wine, fruit and a sweetener. Q uite often, spirits such as triple sec or brandy are added. Ice and carbonation are optional, but I prefer to add them to the glass upon serving. Sangria is often served with a wooden spoon, which can be used to retrieve the fruit from the bottom of a punchbowl or pitcher. Red wine usually serves as the base for sangria, although white wine works just as well. Adding fruit is a critical step, which gives sangria its signature summer taste. Personally, I think citrus is a must: limes, lemons or oranges. After that, almost 20 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

Sweetening your sangria depends on your taste and base wine. If you start with a dry wine, but are looking for more sweetness, add sugar, honey or simple syrup. Keep in mind that if you decide to add spirits such as brandy or triple sec, they are sweet as well. Therefore, I recommend adding your spirits first and then adjusting the sweetness accordingly. Sangria pairs perfectly with grilled or barbecued fare because it complements almost any type of BBQ sauce, marinade or spice rub. Of course, adding a beach, marsh or golf view can only enhance your overall experience. At Island Winery, we call our sangria Southern Passion. We start out with a fullbodied red wine, and blend in peach wine and orange wine made from 100% fruit. A chilled bottle of our Southern Passion is delicious on its own. It also acts as a great base wine for your own signature sangria recipe, since it already contains red wine, natural fruit and sweetness. All you need to do is add local ingredients and your imagination! The perfect bottle of wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Store and tasting hours are Monday through Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flights and Cheese are available from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A Wine & Cheese Happy Hour is offered Monday-Friday starting at 4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Get Your Plaid on at the 2014 RBC Heritage

... the inaugural Heritage Classic golf tournament teed off in 1969...

P hoto p rovided by T he Heritage Classic F oundation

Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Davis Love III are just a few of the champions who have worn the prestigious plaid jacket symbolizing the RBC Heritage. That tradition continues April 14-20, when the 46th RBC Heritage returns to Hilton Head Island, uniting some of the world’s top golfers for a $5.8 million purse and the chance to don the distinctive tartan plaid blazer. The winner will walk away with more than $1 million and the coveted champion status at South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event. The 2014 RBC Heritage will kick off with the annual cannon firing on the Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines, a legendary course originally designed by Pete Dye in consultation with Jack Nicklaus in 1969. Jason Bohn, Chris Kirk, Chesson Hadley, defending champion Graeme McDowell and other notables have all committed to the 46th annual event. Originally the vision of late Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser, the inaugural Heritage Classic golf tournament teed off in 1969 as a way to establish Hilton Head Island as a household name. In its first year, Arnold Palmer clinched the title and $20,000 of the competition' s $100,000 purse, and Hilton Head Island was well on its way to becoming a world-class resort destination. Over the past 40+ years, the tournament has grown from an innovative marketing strategy to one of the most beloved, most respected and most charitable stops on the PGA TOUR. Since 1987, more than $26 million has been donated to charitable organizations to help people in need in South Carolina and Georgia. This year, 38 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

more than 100,000 fans are expected to attend the RBC Heritage, with more than 60 million households around the globe tuning in on The Golf Channel, CBS Sports, Fox Sports Affiliates and X M Satellite Radio. The RBC Heritage is traditionally held the week following the Masters Golf Tournament and provides a warm, relaxed environment for players and their families to enjoy the best of Hilton Head Island. Daily tickets and weeklong badges for this year’s tournament are currently on sale at rbcheritage.com or by calling the tournament office at (843) 671-2448. DID YOU KNOW? Davis Love III is the tournament’s only five-time winner. Hale Irwin has won three times, while Johnny Miller, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Z oeller, Payne Stewart, Stewart Cink and Boo Weekley have won two Heritage events. Davis Love III holds the longest current streak of consecutive appearances at the RBC Heritage. The 2011 tournament marked his 26th start. The oldest winner was Hale Irwin in 1994 at age 48. The youngest winner was Davis Love III in 1987 at age 23. The lowest score recorded by a Heritage winner was 264 by Brian Gay in 2009. The RBC Heritage purse is eight times greater than it was in 1988 and this year’s purse is greater than the combined payouts for the tournament’s first 19 years. LIBRA Tackle a large project with

you and a family member could turn into a full-blown fight if you’re not careful. Explain yourself and make your intentions clear. If you’ve been feeling frustrated lately, you may want to take a closer look at your diet.

full force. Taking a half-hearted approach will only make things drag on. Use your Libran tenacity to get things done. A loved one’s kindness will give you reason to smile. A Cancer plays a major role this month. Romance looks promising.

TAURUS Reaching for the unreachable will only lead to disappointment. Sure, set your sights high, but keep in mind that there are some things in life you just can’t have! A change in the workplace may be a hard adjustment at first. But creative thinking will turn things to your favor.

SCORPIO A new Libra friend gives you valuable insight into a troubling situation. You’ll realize that there’s more than one way to skin a cat. If you’ve been feeling worn out lately, you may want to take note of your sleeping habits. Are you getting enough? If not, catch up on those zzz’s!

GEMINI With all the changes you’ve been going through lately, you’ll be happy to find this to be a slow-paced month. A Taurus coworker may be the source of aggravation – especially if you’re in a management position. News of an engagement adds a bright note to the month.

SAGITTARIUS If you’re working on an important project now, be sure to stay focused on the job at hand. Letting little things distract you will only prolong the inevitable. Watch for investment opportunities later in the month. You could stumble upon a diamond in the rough.

CANCER You may have to do everything short of standing on your head if you want to cheer up a down-and-out friend. Make the effort. It will go a very long way. A tough decision midmonth will take up much of your thoughts. Trust your instincts rather than logic to help you choose.

LEO Opportunity will come your way when you least expect it and you could find yourself in the express lane to success! Just remember, be sure to dress your best. A friend who’s moved away will move back into your area. Another reason to celebrate!

VIRGO An improvement in your work situation gives you reason to smile early in the month. You’ll feel a great weight off your shoulders. In matters of romance, too, there are happy times ahead. If traveling this month, be sure you’re packed in advance. Otherwise you could forget something important. 54 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

CAPRICORN What you think of as harmless teasing may come off as offensive or even hurtful to someone who doesn’t appreciate your sense of humor. Be especially cautious if you’re dealing with an extra-sensitive Pisces. Take the lead when planning a special event. Your creativity will add a lot.

AQUARIUS Not dealing with a problem won’t make it go away. It will only get worse. Face it head on and work to fix it. A disappointment later in the month will prove to be a blessing in disguise. You’ll feel that fate probably had something to do with it. A surprise comes through the mail.

PISCES Instead of trying to relieve the symptoms of an ongoing problem, you’d be better off looking for a permanent cure. Try to give a loved one extra space if (s)he is in a crabby mood. This applies especially for the introspective Cancer. Beware of a Leo with bad intentions. hiltonhead.com

Spring Fishing By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

April is an ideal time to catch Savannah River shad.

Photo provided by Capt. Miles Altman

Just inside the North Carolina border on the southeastern side of the Appalachian Mountains, the Savannah River begins its epic 301-mile journey to the sea. The winding river divides Georgia and South Carolina, for the most part, and hosts a bounty of fish and game. Deer, duck and turkey forage along the river, and virtually every freshwater fish can be found in the middle to upper reaches. As this estuary nears the ocean, saltwater and freshwater fish often mingle. The Savannah River’s hold on me is strongest in the spring, where some 40+ years ago I was introduced to shad fishing by Gene Baldwin. I’m not talking about shad fishing with a rod and reel -- an exciting way to catch them, but done by few -- but with a drift net, an even less popular method. Like many forms of fishing, nets are becoming rare. Declining fish populations, coupled with increasing fisherman populations, have made indiscriminate, efficient net fisheries a thing of the past. Shad, like salmon, are anadromous, which means they live their life at sea and migrate up the freshwater rivers to spawn. The large roe sacs, for those who know, are a delicacy and a cherished rite of spring. Shad have a remarkably complex bone structure, which is why few people eat the meat. Old-timers would often bake the whole 80 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

fish for six or more hours to cook the fine bones out. Today, a handful of locals still know how to bone a shad, which yields delicious, sweet meat. This year, Gene told me Union General William T. Sherman crossed the river at the location of our camp during his march on South Carolina as part of the “War of Northern Aggression.” I’m sure the river looked much the same back then, for it still has a primeval feel today. Sadly, drifting a net will soon become a historical footnote, like Sherman’s legendary march, as only a few fisherman still practice this art. Just as spring is the renewal of the soul, drifting the Savannah River watching for the corks to bob, signaling a “sally” or roe shad finding the net, kicks off my year. We drift approximately 35 miles up the river where a rock wall soars up some 50 feet high on the Georgia side. The beauty of the flora and fauna, along with the welcome solitude, restores my soul every time. Shad are also cobia candy, but that’s a topic for next month! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 41 years ex perience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’ t miss the new “ Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark / dolphin eco-tour trip. Confederate Jasmine By K athleen McMenamin, Master N aturalist, H2 O

Discover this fragrant Southern blossom, which signifies spring on Hilton Head Island.

Hilton Head Island’ s sp ring is a season for all of the senses. W arm w eather mix ed w ith lingering cooler breezes mark s the beginning of the sense celebration. Birds returning to nests and insects buzzing about continue to stimulate y our hearing. L astly , but certainly not the least, colors and smells of new blooms stimulate both sight and smell. Confederate Jasmine or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, stands apart as a fragrant plant that grows as a climbing vine or a sprawling shrub. Spring brings this signature fragrance that we can smell all over Hilton Head Island. This plant can be identified as a twining evergreen and a woody perennial with opposite oval and waxy leaves. The foliage is generally green, except for the winter when it turns a dark red color. Spring and summer generate the beautiful white star-shaped blooms. The flower exudes the wonderful jasmine smell. Confederate Jasmine is not actually a jasmine, but is part of its scientific name jasminoides, which means “resembling a jasmine.” This plant is native to China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Although it was brought to the U.S., it has naturalized itself in certain environments. Star Jasmine grows successfully in the Southeast and California and is not considered as an invasive species in the United States. This plant has a few different names, each having to do with some form of its personality. The name Star Jasmine is derived from its star shaped flowers. It is also called Confederate Jasmine, which actually has two meanings. Originally the Confederate part of the name came from its native origins in the Federation of the Malay States, which is today’s Malaysia. Some think that the 82 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

Confederate part of its name came due to its naturalization and distribution in the Southeastern U.S. It has also been called the Traders Compass, a name originating in Uzbekistan. It’s believed that this plant would help point wellmeaning traders in the right direction. Confederate Jasmine is cultivated for a number of different purposes. Most commonly people want it as an ornamental item in their gardens. It’s also harvested for the smell, creating beautiful perfumes around the world. The stems are used to create paper products as well as rope, due to its strength and hardy nature. However, the entire plant is poisonous if consumed raw. Some people will experience allergic skin reactions if they touch the plant. When the leaves and roots are cut and dried, they can be used to treat rheumatism, to dissipate pathogenic heat in the blood and as an anti-inflammatory. At times, the dried stems and leaves may be mixed with other plant materials to create other medicines. Confederate Jasmine is extremely hardy and easy to grow. It’s hardy, drought-resistant and also resistant to short-term ground freezes. It’s a great plant for beginner gardeners because it grows easily and abundantly. Spanish Moss By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

Learn more about this native Lowcountry species, which hangs from boughs overhead.

Photo courtesy of Billy Hathorn, wikipedia.org.

April in the Lowcountry marks the height of spring. At this time of year, native plants and animals are preparing for the long days of summer. Pollen tends to cover every imaginable surface in April, as trees and shrubs take turns blooming in various ways. Some trees exhibit full coverings of white or pink flowers, while other plants bloom more subtly. One such inconspicuous bloomer is Spanish moss. This iconic Southern plant is covered in miniature coral-colored flowers now and will disperse its seeds into the wind in a few weeks. The weightless seeds will seek out nooks and crannies in the bark of oak and myrtle trees. There, with the help of nutrients in the air, the seeds will begin to grow the distinctive thick gray beard of Spanish Moss. Interestingly, the Spanish moss found in the Lowcountry is neither Spanish, nor a moss. It’s an epiphyte, or air plant, which gets all of the water and nutrients it needs to survive from the air. Believe it or not, its closest relative in the plant world is the pineapple. Spanish moss tends to grow on oaks and myrtles because their aspiration process produces nutrients favored by the moss. Unlike mistletoe, Spanish moss is not a parasite, because it lives in harmony with the tree. The only danger the moss poses to the tree is that when it gets wet, it gets heavy. Under extreme conditions, the weight of the moss can break off the host tree limb. Spanish moss is a true native Lowcountry 84 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

species. When the Spanish and English first colonized this part of the country, they found local Native Americans using Spanish moss for ceremonial clothing. The Native American name for the plant was roughly translated as “nature’s beard.” The British renamed it “Spanish Beard” as a cheeky insult to their competitors in the New World. Over time, it has been called Old Man’s Beard, White Beard, Florida Crape and Wool Crape. Eventually, it came to be called simply Spanish moss. The plant is composed of interconnected short strands. The exterior of each strand appears gray and scaly. The processed interior of the plant was used in commercial products until the early 1970s. Over time, it has been used to manufacture lids for cooking pots, blankets, building insulation, plaster reinforcement, floor mats, string, sacks, fire arrows, sponges, fertilizer, privacy fences, mattresses and more. Believe it or not, the seats of Henry Ford’s first Model T were stuffed with Spanish moss. The history and culture of the Lowcountry is interwoven with its plant and animal inhabitants. Golf & Tennis: A Natural Match By Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

These popular sports have more in common than meets the eye. laugh. The same action takes place when you cough. Triggered by the need to clear your air-ways, these muscles contract and force the air out of your lungs. Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal has developed his obliq ue muscles and increased his racq uet speed considerably. Grand Slam winners who have pursued competitive golf include Ivan Lendl and Leyton Hewitt. Plus, tennis great Stan Smith of Hilton Head Island can beat almost anyone in competitive golf. That’s because the approach to the impact of the ball and the follow through are so similar in golf and tennis. As a result, tennis players have a head start in learning proper golf. I invite you to give your knees a rest and begin the natural transition to golf. You can learn to be an athletic golfer like Bobby Riggs, who visited Palmetto Dunes Resort freq uently in the 70s and 80s. Riggs would play tennis in the morning, eat lunch and go to the driving range looking for a golf game.

Photography by Rob Tipton/Boomkin Productions

Tennis players tend to be great golfers, which may come as a bit of a surprise. Although these two sports may appear, on the surface, to be very different, they actually share many similarities with regard to their mechanics. The forehand stroke in tennis includes a rotation to the back foot and then a rotation to the front foot. The same core muscles do the work in a proper golf swing. Every time a tennis player strokes a forehand, they’re developing those muscles. Take your hands and place them on the sides of your trunk above the belt line and below your ribs. Now laugh and feel the contraction of the obliq ue muscles. This muscle sq ueezes your lungs and forces the air out of your lungs for a hearty 86 ISLAND EVENTS APRIL 2014

Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus broke down a longstanding barrier separating the active tennis players and the perceived non-athletic golfers who rode in carts or walked the course. When Nicklaus built a tennis court in his backyard and a photograph of him playing tennis with his family appeared in a national magazine, people began mixing the sports in their agendas. Now, we know the two games complement each other perfectly. As a result, you will play better tennis if you play golf and vice versa. The tennis racq uet and the golf club are, admittedly, q uite different, but the two sports share so many different q ualities, attributes and strategies. In April, the championship golf courses and world-class tennis courts on Hilton Head Island offer ideal opportunities to perfect your game. Make the most of your time on the golf course this spring. Always be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen, even when the spring temperatures seem moderate. I' ll see you out on the green!
