Hilton Head Island might not have snow in December, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less magical. Holiday lights, Lowcountry charm and Christmas cheer make our little barrier island one of the most beautiful places to discover in December. With evergreen trees, temperatures averaging in the 50s and an exciting lineup of extravagant events, this time of year is still a great time to get out, explore and enjoy South Carolina’s unique boutiques and fabulous restaurants. Be sure to stop by the shops and eateries spread all over the Island, especially those at Shelter Cove Harbour and Shelter Cove Towne Centre, Main Street Village, Harbour Town, South Beach and Coligny Plaza because it’s there that you’ll find fantastic gifts and delectable dining, plus a lot of fun activities and events. On December 1, Shelter Cove Towne Centre will officially flip the switch and turn on all of their lights for the annual Dove Street Festival of Lights, which moved to Shelter Cove last year after two decades on Dove Street. Then on December 4, the family-friendly Winter Wonder Festival will ring in the season with bounce houses, games, and fun in Shelter Cove Community Park. Other fun seasonal events include the Jingle Jingle 5k and the screening of “A Christmas Story” under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town on December 19, the Gregg Russell Christmas Concert on December 23 and Holiday Fun in Harbour Town December 28-30. And you can’t forget about New Year’s Eve celebrations, with the 15th Annual Polar Bear Swim and the New Year’s Celebration in Harbour Town on December 31. For more information about these and other events going on this month, be sure to check out our December Highlights and Calendar of Events. Also in this issue, Doug Weaver shares some unique golf gifts that keep on giving while Georgene Mortimer reveals the interesting history of punch and how it came to be such a popular drink at parties. Katie Hatfield gives us a rundown of different outfits we can rock at the Dove Street Festival of Lights and Kathleen Mortimer shares a little bit about one of the most coveted shells on the island, the knobbed whelk. But it isn’t just Hilton Head that you’ll want to discover while you're here and Jessie Renew is sure to uncover all of the treasures you can find off the beaten path in Bluffton.

Punch's Past:

By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

From refining rum to a Christmas tradition

Punch is a fascinating and old beverage that

looms large in our history. The earliest discovered use of the word dates back to 1632. In the past, it was used to convert voters, grease the wheels to pass legislation, define Christmas and influence war. The main ingredients of punch were spice, sugar, citrus and rum. It was these ingredients, not gold, which motivated the European odysseys into the East and West Indies.

The origins of punch are disputed. Some point to the old Hindustani word “paanstch” meaning five: implying a large beverage concocted from five key elements – sweet, sour, alcohol, water and spice as its origin. But some credit it to English merchant sailors, and while they might not have invented punch, they certainly drank it. Men working ships for the British East India Company used it as a beer alternative in the 17th century. English sailors were known to consume vast quantities of beer during their voyages, but when the ships reached the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean, the beer held in cargo bays grew rancid and flat. Once the boats reached the shore, sailors created new drinks out of the ingredients indigenous to their destinations: rum, citrus and spices. When the sailors brought punch back to Britain, this new drink, with its exotic flavors and expensive ingredients, soon became a fixture in the elite houses of 17th century England. It trickled into the middle class as a new global empire made “mixers” affordable for most respectable households. Punch was ubiquitous in the British Atlantic World, spreading as far as the American colonies. Massive punch bowls were at gatherings in the summer

months; and it has been recorded that the founding fathers drank 76 of them at the celebration following the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Back then, rum was not the smooth refined drink it is today; it tasted downright nasty and was highly intoxicating. So while combining it with sugar, spice and citrus not only made rum more palatable, it also made it more socially acceptable in finer society. As alcohol became more unacceptable in Victorian society, more refined and lesser intoxicating beverages such as wine, Madeira and brandy were used in place of rum. Charles Dickens, who enjoyed drinking in moderation, felt that “nobody should begrudge the citizens of England this simple, age-old pleasure.” Dickens was known to have a fondness for sweet alcoholic punches. One such drink, a mulled wine punch known as a Smoking Bishop, is even mentioned in his timeless holiday classic, “A Christmas Carol.” There are a whole host of delicious, wine-based holiday punch recipes from the 17th century to modern times available online. Light up your Style at the Dove Street Festival By Katie Hatfield

Hilton Head’s beloved Dove Street Festival of Lights returns for the second time to Shelter Cove Towne Centre, where guests won’t just find an incredible display of lights, but also Christmas carolers, entertainment and Santa, all surrounded by amazing shops, restaurants and beautiful views of Broad Creek. This month-long fest is the perfect place to make memories and enjoy friends and family, so be sure to stop by from 6-10 p.m. any day from November 21 through January 2 and shine as bright as the lights with one of these hot looks!

I’’m Dreaming of a Black and White Christmas

The Santa Clause Don’t let Scott Calvin and Neil Miller be the only ones rocking ugly Christmas sweaters. Grab one of your own for the nights you’ll be running around, like when you take your kids to the Winter Wonder Festival on December 4 from 4-8 p.m. in Shelter Cove Community Park. This year, the Festival of Lights has extended into the park so you can enjoy activities while looking at the lights. Not only will you be comfortable, but you’ll also look festive and be able to play carnival games with your kids. Spread the Christmas cheer just like Tim Allen did and bring a donation for the Deep Well Project, PEP (Programs for Exceptional People) or Island Rec Center, because they will all be accepting donations onsite.

Bing Crosby did always say that a white Christmas is the most special kind, but you can make a statement with a beautiful black and white look among the lights by Broad Creek. A kneelength dress with asymmetrical color blocks on the top, and fun fringe on the bottom, gives the seemingly classic party dress a fun new twist. Pair with some black pumps and minimal silver accessories. You’ll be dreaming of snow, but looking hot in this outfit.

Laura Bernal found at Bleu Companies

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Every year a 30-foot tree is lit up with hundreds of lights for families to gather around, just as the Grinch and the Whos in Whoville gathered on Christmas. Look for long sleeved, colorful maxi dresses to keep your limbs warm and keep you looking festive. Throw on a faux fur lined vest (like little Cindy Lou Who) for some winter flair, add some neutral ankle booties with it and you’ll have an outfit that the Whos in Whoville will like an awful lot. Amour Vert found at Louette Boutique

The Importance of Salt Marshes Courtesy of the Coastal Discovery Museum

Although mucky and smelly, the salt marsh is an important part of the Lowcountry. In actuality, the salt marsh produces more food for the environment than rain forests. The green grass that dominates the marsh is called salt marsh cord grass or Spartina. When this cord grass dies each winter and decomposes, its nutrients are released into the marsh mud, creeks, streams and even into the ocean. These nutri足ents begin the food chain for the entire Southeastern coastal area. So, the next time you enjoy a meal of shrimp, mussels, oysters, blue crab, stone crab or saltwater fish, thank the muddy salt marshes.

earning to Fish: A Present that Keeps Giving By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

I have long since figured out that the best gift I’ve ever received is the time and effort of those that introduced me to fishing. The first, best of my recollection, was a tiny Japanese lady by the name of Jeannie. Being a Navy brat, I grew up on military bases and Jeannie had married a sailor who was my dad’s best friend. I think I was around seven when she put me to the task of gathering a sack full of hermit crabs. We were stationed in Puerto Rico and hermits were as plentiful as fiddlers are here in the Lowcountry. She took me by the hand to the Navy pier, where she pulled out her hammer and cracked the shells, exposing the crab’s tail that it uses to anchor itself into the shell. Turns out, the crab tail is caviar to fish and we were soon cranking them in left and right. I remember very little of my early youth but that memory has always remained clear. Fast forward six years and another gentleman entered my life, embracing the role of dad, as if I were his own blood. Being an avid fisherman and hunter, it was not long before he had me on the banks of the Columbia River fishing and catching steelhead and trout. The whole ritual of gathering the rods and tackle boxes coupled with the anticipation of a foray into the wild was euphoric. 48

Being blessed now with a son and a daughter, I have tried to pass this on to my kids. My 13-year-old son Caleb has finally come full stride in his passion. This past summer he was up at 5:30 every morning, assuming the role of first mate and did not miss one trip. The spark is definitely glowing in his eyes and his latest aspiration has changed to marine biology, as opposed to an NBA star. My little Sarah, who is seven, has many trips under her belt and can tell you every fish she has ever caught, albeit not a long list. Some of my favorite charter trips involve youngsters who have never fished. I get a lot of gratification watching the fire light up when they catch their first fish. In these days of technology where young ones’ attention seems to be dominated with cell phones or video games, getting them in touch with nature and a bent rod, I think, is fantastic. Caleb wants to go to Florida this Christmas and catch his first sailfish. He has many fish over 40 pounds – redfish, cobia and mani – and wants to add billfish to the list. While we have them here, they are some 60 miles offshore, making it a long and costly journey locally. When the cold fronts of December roll through southern Florida they congregate within a mile of shore. I can’t think of a better gift. Merry Christmas and God bless! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new “Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Contact Miles at (843) 290-6955 to book an unforgettable inshore or offshore charter fishing trip, departing from Shelter Cove Marina. hiltonhead.com

Knobbed Whelks

By Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist

Photography Š Bddigitalimages | Dreamstime.com

At times, finding shells on the beaches of Hilton Head can be a bit difficult. One of the most coveted shells to find is that of a whelk. They are the beautiful conical shaped shells that we hold to our ears to hear the ocean. While there are four varietal species that can be found in our waters, the knobbed whelk is the most abundant. Knobbed whelks, Busycon carica, are large predatory gastropods. They are large sea snails that can vary in color, size and features depending on their distribution along the coast. They have been found in both tidal estuaries and deeper waters of the Atlantic coast. They are distributed from Cape Cod all the way through Florida and have been found in depths of up to 150 feet, but tend to stay in more shallow waters. They prefer to live in sandy or muddy bottoms and can be found congregated on oyster and clam beds. They have very little long shore movement, but have been known to travel to deeper waters because of water temperature and breeding. During winter storms they are known to bury themselves and go dormant until the weather gets better. Knobbed whelks can reach up to nine inches in length. They grow by extending their shell around a central axis. When looking at a whelk, the very top peak of the shell is where the creature began. From the top whelks create turns (known as whorls) as they evolve. The final whorl becomes the largest and is known as the body whorl. This is the area that creates the opening that the snail withdraws into. Knobbed whelks are identified by low knobs found on the shoulders of the whorl. Their withdrawing aperture is on the right hand side. They can range in color from light orange or yellow all the way to brick red. Knob length, color and size can all be determined by the specific habitat along the Atlantic coast that the whelk lives in. Diet and natural camouflage are both factors that cause differences in shells. All whelks have a hard horny plate known as an operculum. This acts as a protective cover for the snail when it retreats 50

ISLAND EVENTS DECEMBER 2015

into its shell and protects it from predators. This plate is also referred to as the shoe. The operculum is attached to the whelk’s foot, which is its appendage that protrudes from the aperture and is used for transportation. Whelks are carnivorous. They use both their shell, as well as an appendage known as a radula to eat other hard shell creatures. Whelks will use the lip of their shell to chip at and pry open hard clams and oysters. Once a whelk is able to pry open another bivalve, they use their strong radula to tear away strips of tissue for consumption. At times eating food causes damage to the whelk’s shell. Using the lip of their aperture causes chipping and damage, in which they must take time to repair instead of to grow. This is a large factor in the fact that whelks grow very slowly. Knobbed whelks are protandric hermaphrodites, which means that they start their life as males and turn into females as they get older. Female whelks will lay eggs twice a year usually when the water temperatures are around 68 Fahrenheit. September to October is their most productive time, while April to May also has substantial yield. They create egg strings that have a series of coin-shaped capsules attached at one end by a rough cord or string-like structure. They can reach lengths of up to one foot. The first capsule of a string does not usually contain eggs. This is the part that the whelk buries in the ocean floor to act as an anchor as the eggs develop. Strings may have up to 120 capsules, each containing up to 35 eggs. The eggs will hatch within their capsules anywhere between three to 13 months. Discovering Bluffton, Hilton Head’s Neighbor on the Mainland

By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

H

ilton Head Island experienced a major growth cycle in the 1970s as subdivisions, golf courses and shopping centers were established. Clever marketing tactics attracted visitors from all over the country to our previously sleepy shores. But across the bridge in Bluffton, it was a different story. Residents intent on keeping their way of life declared, “Bluffton is a State of Mind,” and resisted the influx of new development. The result of their efforts was that the Historical District remained intact. In 1995 the Bluffton Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places under Criteria A and C. So what is this State of Mind? To find that out you have to visit for yourself! The well-known sites are fascinating, but equally important is getting off of the beaten path and exploring these less travelled sites. Discover the May River and arrive in Bluffton by water, just as people have for thousands of years. You will land at the Calhoun Street dock and the majestic Church of the Cross will greet you. This area has been the gateway to Bluffton since 1850, when the first steamboat landing was built. At this time the town was growing fast and steamboats were transporting crops and goods to Savannah, where they were distributed throughout the region. This is also where, in 1863, Union troops stationed on Hilton Head invaded Bluffton and burned the majority of the town. Only 15 houses and two churches were saved. Walk down Calhoun and hang a left on Bridge Street, go a couple of blocks, over the Huger spring, and you will be in the Old Oyster Factory Park. The Oyster Factory has a rich history you should take the time to learn about, but so too 52

does the unassuming little shack in the corner of the property. This is the Garvin House, built in 1870. After the Battle of Port Royal in 1861 and the Burning of Bluffton in 1863, slaves in this area were expressly freed. Slaves from nearby plantations ran away to join burgeoning free black communities. Cyrus Garvin was one such freed slave, formerly of the Baynard Plantation on Hilton Head, and he built his modest home from remains of build- All Photos Courtesy ings burned in the invasion of Bluffton. This home is the first, and only remaining, freed slave dwelling on the May River. Find your way back to Calhoun Street and walk away from the water, past the beautiful Seven Oaks House, eclectic shops and artists’ studios. At the corner of Calhoun and Church streets sits the huge Patz Brothers house. The Victorian style house was actually two identical apartments (note the two front doors), one for each of the Patz brothers’ families. The brothers had moved from Baltimore in 1892 to start their shop, The Planters Mercantile. The house was built the following year. The Patz brothers were Jewish transplants, and like many other Jewish families, they moved from Northern urban areas into the post Civil War South. The store remained in the family until 1972, when Morris Robinowich closed down the shop and opened Morris Garage, hiltonhead.com

which still operates, around the corner on Highway 46. Today The Planters Mercantile houses Al-Harry’s Furniture Restoration. Cross the street and walk back down Calhoun until you reach the corner of Allen Street. There, across from Seven Oaks stands the Graves House, built in 1908. Bluffton is a living city, constantly changing and adapting to new ideas about preservation, and nowhere is this more evident than the Graves House. These days, this beautiful building looks a little different because it is in the middle of a major restoration. The quintessential southern porch that usually envelopes three sides of the house has been temporarily removed and most of the house is shrink wrapped to protect the materials. The entire house has been lifted off of its foundation and moved about 14 feet on to a newer, sturdier foundation. This restoration comes after four years of intense conflict between preservationists, The Historical Preservation Society,

next door in a small brick building. Little evidence of this history remains at the site (though it is protected and mentioned in the National Register), but if you look closely on the side of the building you can make out painted advertisements from a bygone era.

esy of Art Cornell developers, former owners and the Bluffton United Methodist Church. It has come very close to being completely demolished. The active restoration is an interesting sight. For comparison, check out Google Street View, that still has images of the pre-restoration home. There’s time for one more stop before heading back to the boat. Back up a few feet and head the other direction of Bridge Street. The next intersection, where Bridge and Boundary meet, was an important center of town for Old Bluffton. On one corner sits the Heyward House, one of the homes saved from the burning of Bluffton. It now houses the Bluffton Visitors Center and Historical Preservation Society. Catty-corner across the street is a low-slung brick building with a big wooden door and two big windows. Known as “The Rate,” this building housed a convenience-style store starting in 1940. This little structure is in a corner of a residential property and was originally operated by the owners of the house that stood there. Later, the Post Office was run hiltonhead.com

Time to head back to the boat and get going – or is it? Bluffton is truly a one of a kind place that offers endless experiences exploring history, shopping, dining and engaging in outdoor activities. It is both a great place to live and an endlessly satisfying place to live. Outside Hilton Head offers a daily excursion to the Historic District, which combines a boat ride with a tour of the historical sites and time to explore on your own. However you choose to go, Historic Downtown Bluffton is a place you must see! For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and stand-up paddle boarding. By Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

T - I - M - E If you want to put love into your golf gifts, then don’t just give players a new club or ball, but things that will last much longer – like a lesson or a free round of golf. These things aren’t just nice items to stock up in their bag; they allow the recipient to create memories and get better at a game they love. Here are a few golf gifts that keep on giving!

1. A pre-paid round of golf. Did you know that you can make a tee time and pre-pay for it?

You can also get a gift card at a desirable golf course, including those at Palmetto Dunes where gift certificates are available, which will allow the golfer to make the tee time. When you purchase the gift card, just be sure to let the professional know your intent.

2.

Instead of a golf club, give a lesson on how to use the clubs they have already. When the golf swing is good, the clubs from 20 years ago are effective today. Time spent with a nurturing, patient coach will bring immediate joy to their game and rekindle their passion for it. Purchasing a club for someone is a big guess. Providing a series of lessons may cost the same as one new golf club. Plus, the lessons offer great flexibility for the golfer to develop all parts of the game or return later as needed to continue making improvements. This will produce long lasting results and the “honeymoon effect.”

3. A little advice from a Golf Psychologist. This affordable gift can be life changing. Most

golfers have several bad shots or habits that are rooted in their personality, resulting from influences from work habits, parents, friends or other golfers that improperly mentored them. 54

ISLAND EVENTS DECEMBER 2015

Mentalgolfworkshop.com is an affordable and professional online golf psychology service that identifies the golfer’s patterns and offers a report on how to blend their personality into successful golf. The website offers testimonials from PGA Tour players, parents and college coaches. The service is a branch of the DISC Profile System used worldwide in the Human Resources Industry.

4.

Time with a golf exercise trainer. Many people and golfers alike lose confidence in themselves simply because they have not done it recently. A Golf Mobility Class will increase confidence in kids and adults becoming more mobile, agile and stronger, therefore seeing the ball go farther and straighter effortlessly. Also, the class benefits normal activity in life.

5. Time playing on the course with a professional. Play with the pro and let them learn as

they go. It’s kind of like going fishing in the local salt marshes or ocean – a guide is necessary, otherwise it is blind luck to catch a fish. Studies prove that many people quit golf or reduce their play significantly because they are not having fun. Quitting can be prevented by time with a coach. Golf is a game for a lifetime. If you need any help choosing that special golf gift, or if you’re in need of golfing advice, feel free to call Doug at (843) 338-9598. He’ll help you find a gift that will be well received and cherished for many years. One from which many smiles and stories will come, when you get friends and family out in the fresh air on the fairways. A former PGA Touring Pro, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. Recreational Pathways Guide The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists. At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events’ Island Map. Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of the area on the other.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available. Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways. Be courteous, alert and predictable. hiltonhead.com
