ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

With school out and summer finally here, June is the perfect time to try some adventurous activities with your friends and family. Whether it’s parasailing or paddle boarding, testing out a new electric bike, going on a fishing charter or moonlight kayaking tour, there’s bound to be something new for you to try. But it doesn’t all have to be a rush! Be sure to relax on Hilton Head Island’s sandy shores, dine out at some of the beachfront restaurants and enjoy a sunset boat cruise. Or you can ride around Hilton Head Island at your leisure, exploring the bike paths that run on bridges over marshes and under majestic live oak trees. June is one of the most exciting months on the island with all kinds of activities and special events going on every evening. HarbourFest finally returns to Shelter Cove Harbour and Summer Jams kicks off in the Shelter Cove Community Park. From outdoor concerts, fireworks and festivals to a special summer production of Big Fish the musical by the SSTI, there is bound to be something to please everyone. Be sure to check out our Calendar of Events to find out what you want to do this month! In this issue of Island Events, discover what makes dolphins delicate with Jessie Renew and find out why cobia are so curious with Captain Miles Altman. But it’s not all about the underwater life in this issue. Kathleen McMenamin tells us a little bit about the “yellow crowns” spotted around marshes and up in the trees at the Sea Pines Forest Reserve, while Doug Weaver lets us know about some family golf activities at Palmetto Dunes and Georgene Mortimer explains how to pair different styles of barbeque with wine. We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the island has to offer. As always, the best of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire is just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. It’s there you’ll find digital copies of all of our publications as well as a wealth of information about what to do while you’re here. All of our websites are accessible via smartphone, so you can find the best shops, restaurants and activities no matter where you are. Welcome to Hilton Head Island. June Highlights The summer season has arrived, and with another hectic school year behind us, now is the time to say goodbye to in-school and after-school activities and say hello to relaxation and fun with family and friends. Relaxation is easy to find here on the Island. Just walk down to the beach in the morning and sit quietly soaking up the natural beauty while listening to the kids playing in the sand, watching the birds searching for a tasty morsel or a shrimp boat off in the distance pulling their nets behind. Fun is easy here on the Island, too. In addition to the cool water sports and amazing golf and tennis there is merriment to be enjoyed each evening as well. So, grab the family and friends, head out to South Beach, Harbour Town, Shelter Cove, Coligny Plaza or anywhere in between and enjoy a nice meal and the fun will be right around the corner.

June 4, Ladies Night Outside takes place, 5-8 p.m., at the Outside Hilton Head Flagship Store in Shelter Cove Plaza. Outside Hilton Head is partnering with prAna clothing for this fun night of shopping to benefit Hope Haven. Special deals, food, drinks and music are just the beginning. A portion of all sales goes to local nonprofit Hope Haven, a Children’s Advocacy and Rape Crisis Center based in Beaufort, S.C. 50 Shelter Cove Ln. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead. com. 10

Cork poppin’ good:

A guide to pairing wine with BBQ By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

not be mistaken for honey mustard; it is hotter and contains spices such as Worchester sauce, garlic and cayenne pepper. This unique blend of sweetness and spice requires a wine that is intense, slightly sweet and acidic. A big Zin or Shiraz is the perfect red wine companion and a spicy, floral Gewürztraminer is the perfect white wine.

Are you going out for barbeque tonight and thinking about washing it down with an icecold beer? Well, think again, because wine is also fantastic with barbeque. Depending on which famous barbeque region you’re from, you may argue that your hometown barbeque style is the only real style. But on Hilton Head Island, we serve all regional styles, so check out this guide to see which wine will go best with the different sauces. Eastern North Carolina Style sauce has a vinegar base, sugar and is loaded with pepper. This thin sauce is the most acidic of all barbeque styles and needs some sweetness to balance it out. Just like a big cold sweet tea would do the trick, so would a sweet Riesling, preferably from a warm climate such as California. Western North Carolina Style sauce basically is an eastern style sauce with ketchup and more sugar. Since there is enough sweetness in the sauce to balance out the acid, there is no need for a real sweet wine. Petite Sirah’s subtle tannins and high acidity compliments without overpowering the delicate taste of the pork. South Carolina Style sauce is unique because it has a mustard base. Despite the honey or brown sugar that is added, it should 18

Memphis Style ribs are heavily seasoned with a dry rub made of brown sugar, pepper, chili powder and cumin. Sauce is served on the side, used as an accent and not slathered over the ribs, so a wine that will compliment the heavy spice in the rub is ideal. A cool climate Merlot or a Pinot Noir will achieve this with their light body and powerful fruity flavors. Kansas City Style sauce is the style of sauce that is familiar to most of us. It is thick, fruity and applied generously to smoky pork. The heavy sweetness of the sauce needs a big assertive red wine. A California Cabernet or a Spanish Tempranillo has the ripe fruit, boldness and spice to contrast with the heavy sweetness of the ribs. Of course, you could also fire up your own backyard smoker and get creative. On a hot summer day an ice cold pitcher of Sangria will be the perfect companion to all barbecue styles. You can use either a red or white wine base or choose a Specialty Wine at the Island Winery as your base. Served chilled, our Sangria Style Southern Passion is delicious. The perfect bottle of wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Store and tasting hours are Monday-Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flights and Cheese are available from Monday-Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. A Wine & Cheese Happy Hour is offered Monday-Friday starting at 4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Visit the King Neptune Statue at Shelter Cove Harbour This much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

The towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a largerthan-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location. Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measure ments before the one-ton statue was installed, 30

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star. An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights gen erations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to experience a true Hilton Head Island icon. hiltonhead.com

Harbour Town Lighthouse Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links...

Photography by Allyson Jones

The Harbour Town Lighthouse, which was completed in 1970, was the first privately-financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s. Nicknamed “Fraser’s Folly,“ Charles Fraser, the visionary developer of The Sea Pines Resort, believed a distinctive landmark, along with a professional golf tournament, would arouse interest in the fledgling seaside community. As usual, Fraser was right, and today the candystriped, hexagonal structure has become synonymous with Hilton Head Island. Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links, the red-and-white striped lighthouse guides golfers off the tee. The backdrop for one of golf’s most picturesque finishing holes, #18 was once part of the $1 million Kodak Challenge, a celebration of “the beautiful holes and memorable moments in golf.” Panoramic views of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and Golf Links, the Liberty Oak, the Calibogue Sound and Daufuskie Island, are just one reason to climb the 114 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Along the way, the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum offers a 32

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

self-guided “climb through time” with displays and artifacts showcasing various stages of Hilton Head history. Offering a unique, “elevated” shopping experience, The Top of the Lighthouse Shop features over 2,000 items, including Crystal World lighthouse figurines, Harbour Lights collectibles, Christmas ornaments, Annaleece high quality fashion jewelry, Trollbeads and local art and photography. While enjoying the view, wave to family and friends via the webcam or visit harbourtownlighthouse.com to zoom in on the yacht basin, the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links or the Liberty Oak, where family favorite Gregg Russell has entertained generations of visitors for more than three decades during the summer. The Island’s best-known landmark is also available for special events, including memorable weddings, intimate parties and corporate functions. Call for details and reservations. The Harbour Town Lighthouse is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m.-Sundown. Admission is $4 per person, free for ages 5 and under. Accommodating up to 40 people, the lighthouse may also be reserved for private parties and functions. (843) 671-2810, (866) 305-9814 or harbourtownlighthouse.com. hiltonhead.com

Designated Swimming Areas:

Official swimming areas have been designated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field

and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and 38

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or

your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsu pervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swim- ming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure

you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

PrAna women’s sportswear, provided by Outside Hilton Head

Hilton Head Style? By Katie Hatfield

Bright. Beachy. Eclectic. Exquisite. That’s just the beginning of the statement-making styles on the Island. Unlike most vacation outfits that only last as long as, well, the vacation, Hilton Head Style, with its bright colors, bold patterns and neatly tailored silhouettes, can work for anyone, anywhere, anytime. It’s a style that was meant to be combined and transformed to fit almost any occasion and forecast. With a cross between island colors, bold patterns and southern flair, Hilton Head Style emits its own quiet, casual elegance that can be appropriate for work, play and special occasions. Since the island is home to so many fun activities, sports and festivals, having a style that can easily transfer from one event to the next is an essential part of life. One day you may be going from work to a play, or from the beach to a sporting event and you don’t have time to change. Hilton Head Style is all about convenience and looking good while doing it. When it comes to dressing on Hilton Head, being comfortable and good looking aren’t mutually exclusive. Hilton Head Style is aimed to keep you cool in the hot, muggy weather while still maintaining a stylish exterior. Many people tend to stray from color, being afraid it may show sweat, but Southerners know that color is your best weapon in the summertime. Not only do bright and bold colors keep you cool, but they also won’t absorb the sunlight or reflect it like black and white clothing. It’s also super cute. Light neutrals are appropriate for every event and look great on everyone – every age, height, weight and skin tone. Not to mention with the warm climate you’ll want lighter colors to help keep you cooler during the daytime. Plus, they provide a classy and sophisticated look. In addition to color, fabric is also an important factor in Hilton Head Style. Light linens 58

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

and cottons are most commonly used for tops and bottoms. Some stretch cotton fabric blends are also used, but they aren’t as breathable as linen and also not as versatile. Jeans are always popular, but sometimes not appropriate. The most essential part of Hilton Head Style really comes down to the accessories. Southern women are known for dressing to the nines just to run quick errands, so of course accessories would be a huge part of Hilton Head Style. Chunky necklaces are a big favorite among islanders. They go with almost every neckline imaginable while still making a statement and adding a pop of color and shine to any outfit. It’s not just one store that captures the style of Hilton Head, so be sure to shop around while you’re here. Find a bold top, statement necklace, some casual capris and a bright dress, and take the versatile Hilton Head Style home with you. hiltonhead.com

A Day on the Water Parasailing

Photo by Joyce Harkins, Hilton Head Island Photography

Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water and few places offer so many ways to enjoy the pleasures of coastal living. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, you’re sure to find a water-related activity to suit all ages and interests. Whether you want to get wet or stay dry, following are a few suggestions for making the most of a day on the water:

Marinas

Launch a perfect day on the water from any of the Island’s numerous marinas. Offering almost every imaginable watersport, boat rentals, char ters and lessons, along with a variety of restau rants, shopping and entertainment, there truly is something for everyone. Explore the world-famous Lighthouse in Harbour Town, experience the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, visit the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, unwind in the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina, discover Broad Creek Marina or head to the Island’s North end and depart from Hilton Head Harbour.

Sailing

If you love the sound of water lapping against the hull, relax and let the wind fill your sails as you glide over the waters surrounding the Island on a morning, afternoon, sunset or evening trip. Local captains offer 2-hour to all-day excursions and sailboat lessons and rentals are also available. Whether you prefer a private charter or traveling with a large group, you’re sure to find an outing to meet your needs.

Kayaking

One of the best ways to experience Island wildlife up close is by paddling through the calm tidal creeks and marshlands on a kayak. Experi enced naturalists will point out dolphins, otters, alligators, egrets, herons, terns, pelicans, osprey, eagles and more on sunrise, morning, afternoon, sunset or full moon excursions. Basic instruction is provided and special kayak camps are offered in the summer months for children and teenagers. 74

Jet Skiing

Those who feel a need for speed will find jet skis and waverunners designed for one to three people available for rent at area marinas. This fun way to get around on the water doesn’t require any experience and is sure to delight all ages. Just don’t forget to bring the sunscreen.

Curious Cobia

By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

You never know when one will pop up next to the boat.

breaking things and bruising anglers.

Photo provided by Capt. Miles Altman

“Look at those sharks!” is something that every charter boat captain has heard more than once while fishing the local waters in spring. And usually, it’s not sharks people are seeing, but large cobia, a much sought after game fish in these parts. Cobia have a natural affinity to floating objects – buoys and boats being some of their favorites. One of the most exciting things about cobia fishing is that you never know when one (or several) will pop up next to the boat. These constantly curious cobia will even follow sharks and other large fish to the surface when anglers reel them up. May through the middle of June is a muchanticipated time for local anglers, as it is prime cobia fishing. They can weigh upwards to 100 pounds, but the more common size caught in our waters is 40 to 60 pounds. But even with the smaller cobia, you can be assured a classic battle. These brown bruisers can tax even heavier tackle and, if brought in the boat too soon, can cause havoc in the boat, often 96

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

The word cobia translates “crab eater” and many that I have caught have tons of calico crabs in their stomach. Most are sought using live menhaden, mullet, whiting and pinfish. Live eels are also popular, but difficult to handle. Heavy jigs and plugs also work well. One of the more frustrating aspects of cobia fishing is that they can be extremely finicky. This season seems to have a crop of extremely finicky fish as many anglers have complained of seeing numerous fish that had lockjaw. Conversely, when feeding they seem to smash anything in front of them. One of the best angling experiences the Lowcountry has to offer, cobia fishing is going off hot now. If you have never been, the time is right. See you there! Captain Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years of experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new “Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Yellow Crowned Night Herons By Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist

the beak. But yellow crowns are solitary creatures and prefer to forage alone. Photography by Terry Foote at English Wikipedia

Yellow Crowned Night Herons are a common sight during Hilton Head summers. These beautiful birds can be found during the day or night, foraging in a number of different Lowcountry habitats. Keep an eye out along our local canals, nests can be found in trees overhanging the water. Yellow Crowned Night Herons, Nyctanassa violacea, are medium-sized stocky herons that grow to be just over two feet tall. Mature adults have a black face and bill with white cheeks, and gray bodies with long yellow legs. The easiest way to identify them is by their yellow crest, found on the top of their head. Immature herons are common these times of the year, as young are preparing to fledge the nest. The young are brown with white spots all over and have a black beak and yellow legs. These birds live in diverse habitats – from marshes and mangrove swamps to wooded forests, lakes and rivers. They can be found throughout the Southern United States, spread all the way to the Great Lakes in small numbers. They are even occasionally found in the Caribbean. Hilton Head offers them a diverse environment rich with food and nesting habitats. Yellow crowns can be found foraging in the marshes or along freshwater canals. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a great place to see them nesting. The shallow waters of our area provide a great variety of food for the yellow crowns. They predominantly stalk our marshes for crustaceans. Insects, small fish and even small reptiles diversify their diet. Yellow crowns stalk their food by standing very still or slowly walking up and down a bank. Once prey has been spotted they will strike with their bill. Small prey will be swallowed hole, while larger prey may be shaken until they break apart, crushed or speared by 98

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

They tend to be monogamous and nest in the same area year after year. Nesting begins in April and continues through June. Courtship is a series of neck stretches and flashes of their golden crest to each other. Once the pair has bonded, the female will choose a spot over the water, usually in a wax myrtle tree, to nest while the male gathers branches. Once the base nest has been created, the pair works together to finish the nest. They will collect dead branches off of trees as opposed to picking them up from the ground. They will finish the nest by lining it with Spanish moss and the female will lay two to six eggs, once a year. Incubation of the eggs lasts about 25 days and the young will stay in and around the nest for up to 35 days. Although these birds are more solitary than other herons, they have been observed nesting in small colonies. Yellow Crowned Night Herons are a species of concern for the state of South Carolina. Maintaining their habitat is the prime way to help increase their population. Historically, they were over hunted for their plumage and as food resources. Today they are protected, as well as land across the south east being preserved in order to increase their numbers. Yellow crowns have also been a great benefit to Bermuda. The bird was introduced in order to help maintain the ground crab populations. So far their introduction has been a great success. The H2O Nature Center is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning in all ages, offering eco adventure tours and a live alligator exhibit. Everyone can enjoy a game of golf at Palmetto Dunes, where there are an assortment of different activities and programs for families with kids of all ages – toddlers to teens. In this game of opposites, where the harder you try the worse you are, it could be a good idea to get a little help from a patient coach. Because often what you believe should happen in the swing is the opposite of what happens in a good swing. When you aim left, the ball goes right. That’s why the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy has several clinics and lessons for everyone to try. It’s a great way for newcomers and aspiring golfers alike to develop techniques through lessons, clinics, or by enrolling in one of the programs. You can enjoy it with the family by enrolling in the twohour Family Class or the three-day Family Golf School, or get the kids swinging while they’re young with programs like “Little Swingers.” This youth program gives kids an opportunity to learn a few songs that give direction and spend some time on the course, while Junior classes help older students secure the fundamentals and improve their technique. Palmetto Dunes also offers one, two and threeday schools, and even a Lady’s Only Program that includes a supervised warm up, instruction with each golfer and 30 minutes of supervised play on the course.

Recreational Pathways Guide The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists. At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events’ Island Map. Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of the area on the other.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available. Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

PATHWAY MARKINGS: WHITE DIAMONDS

RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE Travel with the flow of traffic

WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN ROAD CROSSING Stop and look for motorists

YELLOW CENTER LINE TWO-WAY TRAFFIC Keep to the right

ISLAND EVENTS JUNE 2015

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways. Be courteous, alert and predictable. hiltonhead.com

PLEASE LOCK YOUR BICYCLE WHEN NOT IN USE! BICYCLE THEFTS ARE PREVENTABLE

"Hilarious & Engaging" -Chicago Tribune

JUNE 17 — JULY 26 A hilariously reinvented send-up of the 80’s film, this irreverent musical adventure spins along to the addictive original hit score of chart-topping tunes including the music of Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John. The lovely Greek muse Kira encourages an uninspired artist, Sonny, to build the first roller disco! When she accidentally falls in love with him, much to her jealous sister-muses’ dismay, chaos and fun abound, skate wheels turn and disco balls twirl. This delightful fun-for-the-whole-family musical will skate its way right into your heart!
