Established in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers handson exploration of the Lowcountry‘s diverse cultural heritage and complex natural history with an array of programs, presentations, exhibits and tours for all ages. The last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007. Comprising 68-acres of salt marsh and maritime forests, centuries-old live oaks, open fields and a dozen historic structures, Honey Horn is located at the intersection of Highway 278 and the Cross Island Expressway. Over its 300-year history, Honey Horn has been home to Indian tribes, indigo and Sea Island cot ton plantations, Gullah families who hunted and farmed the land, a hunt club established by northern businessmen and, starting in 1950, Fred Hack’s private residence and farm. In the late 1990s, the Town of Hilton Head Island purchased the site and leased it to the Coastal Discovery Museum for 95 years. Construction of the 6,000-sq.-ft. hunting lodge began in 1859 and, today, known as the Discovery House, is complete with permanent and temporary exhibits, a Kids Zone and gift shop. Self-guided tours of the property via salt marsh boardwalks and an oyster shell trail include the Karen 8

Wertheimer Butterfly Enclosure, a Lowcountry Heritage Garden and a Camellia Garden. Guided History/ Nature Walks & Talks, live animal programs and seasonal kids camps are offered on a regular basis. Lowcountry
ANIMALS Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins
Local waters host a large, yearround population of these playful, air-breathing mammals. The South Carolina Lowcountry is also one of the few places to witness strand feeding – a learned behavior where dolphins work as a team to corral fish, chase them onto a muddy bank and then temporarily beach themselves to eat their catch.
Marsh Tacky
Once the most common horse found in the Southeast, this Colonial Spanish breed is uniquely adapted for survival in swampy terrain. On the Sea Islands, Gullah families used them for transportation, hunting and farming. Today, fewer than 200 of these small, gentle horses exist.
Alligators
Keep your distance from these federally-protected, prehistoric reptiles often seen sunning themselves on the banks of lagoons. It is ille gal to feed these cold-blooded animals and, although they may look listless and slow, they can out run humans over short distances.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Every summer, dozens of female loggerhead sea turtles travel thousands of miles to Hilton Head Island, returning to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched two or three decades earlier. It is a federal offense to harass these ancient reptiles which can weigh up to 300 pounds.
Green Anole
A common lizard in South Carolina and Georgia, often called a chameleon for its ability to change color. The only anole species native to the United States, males have a pink throat fan they display when protecting their territory or finding a mate.
Southeastern Five-Lined Skink
Named for the five white or yellowish stripes running down their backs, these moderately large lizards eat a variety of insects and spiders. Like many other lizards, their tails will break off if attacked, but it is only a myth that they are venomous. 12

In actuality, the salt marsh produces more food for the environment than rain forests. The green grass that dominates the marsh is called salt marsh cord grass or Spartina. When this cord grass dies each winter and decomposes, its nutrients are released into the marsh mud, creeks, streams and even into the ocean. These nutri ents begin the food chain for the entire Southeastern coastal area. KAYAKING
If you’re looking for a bit of adventure on Hilton Head, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Island’s extensive rivers, tidal creeks and lagoons by sea kayak. After all, much of the area’s wildlife simply cannot be seen from land. Kayaking provides visitors of all ages with the opportunity to get “up close and personal” with the Island’s unique flora and fauna. Island Beaches Public Beach Access:
All of the beach is public, from the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, however, is often private.
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nine beach accesses: Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Drive; Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle; Driessen Beach Park, at the end of Bradley Beach Road; Chaplin Community Park, off Wm. Hilton Pkwy.; Fish Haul Park & Mitchelville Beach Park, at the end of Beach City Road; Burkes Beach Access, at the end of Burkes Beach Road; Folly Field Beach Park and Islanders Beach Park, both off Folly Field Road.
Parking and Facilities:
There are 23 metered spaces at Alder Lane; 54 metered spaces at Folly Field and 13 metered spaces at Burkes Beach Road. The parking fee is a QUARTER for each 15 minutes.

Official swimming areas have been designated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water.
Parking spaces at Islanders Beach Park are ALWAYS reserved for annual beach passes. Parking at Driessen Beach Park for annual beach passes is reserved from 8 a.m.
During the beach season, lifeguards are stationed in each of the designated swimming areas for assistance and beach information. Please ask a life guard before entering the water if the yellow caution flag is flying.

Recreational Pathways Guide The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedes trians and cyclists.
At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events’ Island Map. Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of the area on the other.
RULES FOR THE ROAD: Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available. Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

Dolphins
One of Hilton Head Island’s most popular residents, Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins are abundant in local waters. In fact, these incredible marine mammals share so many characteristics with humans it can be argued they are our underwater counterparts. One example is the way they give birth. Female dolphins give live birth and nurse their young for up to three years. Male calves often stay with the mother for up to five years and potentially for the rest of their lives, if female. In the wintertime, the Bottlenose popu lation averages from 200 to 400 animals. Early spring through late fall, we are inundated with dolphins as females from all over the Southeastern coast make an annual trek to the area to give birth. Other females act as midwives and nannies, often taking turns
watching over the young as the mother feeds. Males tag along, following the females wherever they go – yet anoth er human trait! From a boat, you will often see the young calves swimming and playing with the other dolphins in the pod. Providing abundant food for the mothers, Lowcountry waters also give the young dolphins a fairly safe environment to practice swimming and hunting before moving on to other parts of the coast. Although they lack the gracefulness of an adult dolphin, the calves’ play fulness and energy tends to remind one of their own youth. It is important to obey all traffic signals and pathway markings, especially stop signs. Travel at a safe speed staying in a single-file line and keeping a safe distance from one another. By law, bicycles must have a sounding device and you should sound a warning before passing others. Most pathways are not illuminated at night, so wear light clothing and carry a flashlight and make sure your bike has a headlight and reflectors.
Rentals are available for a few hours to a few weeks and it’s always a good idea to make reservations ahead of time for the best selection. Most companies offer free Island-wide delivery and pickup and be sure to ask about locks, baskets and helmets.

This longtime local favorite opened in 1984 on Highway 278 overlook ing Jarvis Creek. Two years later, the second restaurant began serving hungry patrons in Harbour Town.

Destroyed by fire in 1998, the North-end Crazy Crab was rebuilt to twice its original size and now accommodates nearly 250 people inside the spacious, nauticalthemed restaurant, with another 80 seats outside on the deck. Open daily for lunch and dinner, both locations offer similar menus featuring made-to-order Lowcountry specialties. Share a complimentary basket of freshly-made hushpuppies while enjoying a bowl of She Crab Soup, shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab cake, oysters on the half shell or Caesar salad. During lunch, the variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood plat ters and daily specials are sure to please every palate. In the evening, the menu expands to include an even larger selection of appetizers and entrées, such as stuffed flounder, bacon-wrapped BBQ shrimp and Alaskan king crab legs. From fresh fish and tender sea scal lops to succulent shrimp and plump oysters, patrons may choose their seafood broiled, fried or steamed with a garden salad, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, onion rings, rice, baked potato or French fries on the side. The special “Minnow’s Menu“ includes macaroni & cheese, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and pizza with a selection of locally-made ice cream, homemade Key Lime pie and chocolate mud pie for dessert. According to co-owner Peter Kenneweg, the secret of the restau rants’ success is three-fold. “It’s more than one thing,” he explains. “It’s got to be good food, good service and the price has to be right.” The Crazy Crab restaurants have been local favorites for more than 30 years. A children’s menu, take-out and outdoor seating (at Jarvis Creek) are available. Reservations are not required, large groups welcome.

HOW HILTON HEAD GOT ITS NAME Many people here on a first visit make a basic error in assuming that somehow the name Hilton Head has to do with the Hilton hotel chain. While the late hotel magnate, Conrad Hilton,
may
have been related to the whom the name sprang, it is
man from certain that he was
unaware of the Island’s existence during most of his lifetime. Hilton Head gained its name from some notes on navigation made by the British explorer and seaman, Capt. William Hilton, who investigated the lower coast of South Carolina in 1665 for a group of Barbadian planters who were interested in expanding their New World holdings. His sighting of a particular bluff or “headland” as a way of finding the entrance to Port Royal Sound while still at sea was noted in his papers and the name of that headland soon applied to the entire island.
