Offering international students a home away from home “What is a Guardianship Company and what does it do?” is a question that I am frequently asked. At Alpha Guardians we bring international students into the UK to study in local state and independent schools often to study for GCSE’s and A Levels, before progressing onto degree courses in British Universities. They come to live in the UK with host families and hopefully become part of the family. The host family is able to assist them with their day-to-day needs whilst providing the student with a safe and secure home environment, enabling them to continue their education in the UK.

We became a host family when my children were eight and six years old. We had a spare room, which was collecting dust and thought it could be put to good use without compromising our own children and hence the hosting chapter began in our lives. We have looked after a number of students in our home, some long term, some short term, and have watched them grow and mature into young adults leaving our care and moving on to universities or different pastures. As a family we have hopefully played a part in their lives, enabling them to continue to the career path of their choice, providing a home that they will look back on fondly as happy times in Ipswich and we are still in touch with many of them. Now as the owner of the Alpha Guardians Ltd, I am in the fortunate position of “meeting” and getting to know these students before they come to the UK, placing them in schools and with host families. So, could you help? We are always looking for excellent host families to assist in this work. My family and I also host and are still in contact with the students that have

2

lived in our home and our children still talk about and contact them regularly. One is now training to be a doctor, one is studying geography and one studying chemical engineering and another is studying for his A levels. So, if you have a spare room and would consider having a student in you home please contact us. We are looking for many different types of hosts, from single parents to those who are separated or divorced. Families, with or without children at home to retired people as this reflects the types of different students we have. We look to select host families that will offer a safe and welcoming environment for the students to live and learn. So could you consider hosting an international student on a long term basis? Once a student is placed with you and your family this can also be an additional source of income. Currently our hosts receive from £420 a month per student. Festive-Themed Quiz Night to Help Local Food Bank Appeal One Ipswich company is looking for your support with their forthcoming festive fundraiser, raising valuable funds to help local families and individuals affected by poverty. The Hearing Care Centre is again organising one of Suffo k’s biggest quiz events, all in aid of Families in Need (FIND) and their winter food bank appeal. The event is being held on Sunday 30th November at Greshams Sports Club, on Tuddenham Road, Ipswich at 7pm and your support is needed to make it a fantastic night. Karen Finch, MD of The Hearing Care Centre said, “This promises to be a brilliant night out in the run up to Christmas. If you are looking for an inexpensive evening out to celebrate the festive season with friends, family and colleagues, then this is for you!” This is the eight trivia fundraiser organised by the company with over 1,300 members of the public raising more than £10,000, so far from previous years. The aim of the event is simple – to raise as much money as possible. Teams for the quiz can include between four to six members. Entry is £4.00pp (festive nibbles included), and there will be lots of cash prizes to be won (not just for the winners). FIND handed out more than 3,000 food parcels in 2013, along with a further 1,140 Christmas hampers. Worlds’ biggest garden wildlife survey on its way... The UK will once again be peering out of their windows for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th January 2015. To take part, families are asked to spend just one hour at any time over the Birdwatch Weekend noting the highest number of each bird seen in their gardens or local outside space. They then have to submit their results to the RSPB before 13th February, either online at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch or in the post. Aggie Rothon, RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Project Manager says, “This is a fun, relaxing activity for families or individuals and everyone who takes part will be helping to give nature a home. “Now in its 36th year, Big Garden Birdwatch continues to help us learn about what is happening with our much-loved birds and other visitors, giving us an overall picture of how we will be able to help wildlife for generations to come.”

Utterly Reclaimed A fourth Utterly crime novel is published in time for Christmas Readers of Pauline Manders’ locally based Suffolk crime novels will be delighted with Utterly Reclaimed, her most recent book. The pace is fast and the twists unexpected. A body is found in a reclamation yard near Bury St Edmunds, and the action moves swiftly across the county from Thorpe Morieux to Woodbridge and Lavenham. This is a clever plot woven against a backdrop of illegal metal and scrap dealing, and a spooky remote car wrecking yard near Stowupland. When a bronze statue is stolen and a broken automaton with a singing bird mechanism raises more questions than answers, the hunt is on for the killer. A rundown pizza delivery service links the rogues and innocent alike, while a darkly brooding young man waits in the wings. The main characters have featured in Pauline Manders’ previous novels. They return warmer, quirkier and funnier than ever, connected by friendship since a past carpentry course at Stowmarket’s fictional Utterly Academy. The author’s love of the Suffolk countryside, her scientific medical background and her interest in carpentry are reflected in this fast moving crime novel. This is a gripping sequel to Utterly Explosive, Utterly Fuelled and Utterly Rafted. • Utterly Reclaimed by Pauline Manders is available in paperback and e-book from Amazon, and in paperback from: Waterstones Bury St Edmunds (Buttermarket branch); Browsers in Woodbridge; Idlers in Hadleigh; Landers in Long Melford; and Leaping Hare bookshop Wyken Vineyard.

Christmas show signals end of busy year for Angles It’s been a busy year for Eastern Angles. There have certainly been plenty of opportunities for audiences to experience the theatre company’s work over the last few months. You may have seen their tour Palm Wine & Stout which visited over fifty different venues, popping up everywhere from village halls and community centres to high profile theatres and arts festivals, during the Spring and early Summer? Or in May when the company de-camped to Peterborough and staged River Lane an ambitious pop-up community play in an empty shop unit. Or even in September when they pulled-out all the stops to create Ragnarok (the doom of the gods) which brought the stories of the Norse gods Thor, Loki and Odin to life in a truly spectacular way in an aircraft hangar on the old Bentwaters airfield (pictured). Well, there is still more to come. After all that excitement Eastern Angles are back on more familiar ground with their annual crowd-pleaser, the legendary Christmas show. Created by Julian Harries and Pat Whymark,

this year’s production is entitled The Mystery of St Finnigan’s Elbow and can be seen the wonderfully quaint Sir John Mills Theatre in Gatacre Road in Ipswich from December 3rd until January 10th. Audiences love this cosy

and intimate venue where all 120 seats offer a fantastic view, the actors practically brush the knees on the front row, and the punch and mince pies flow freely at the interval. For those who can’t make the Ipswich run there is still time to see this classic comedy spoof after Christmas at the Seckford Theatre in the grounds of Woodbridge School from 13th until 24th of January. ‘St Finnigan’s’ will also visit Peterborough’s Key Theatre for a week before finally being put to bed on January 31st. And then it’ll be another Spring Tour… Watch the website for further info! To book tickets for The Mystery of St Finnigan’s Elbow call the Box Office on 01473 211498 or visit www.easternangles.co.uk

Standby evil laughter, get ready thunder and lightning! It’s that time of year again as the Mercury Theatre in Colchester announces its 2014 pantomime, Cinderella. This year’s panto promises to be a traditional affair with plenty of audience participation, slop and sloshy fun and the return of favourite Mercury stars Dale Superville, Ignatius Anthony and Tim Freeman. In Stoneybroke Hall the wicked Baroness Evilla is forcing poor Cinderella to live an awful life as an all-round slave. When the Prince of Colchester Castle proclaims his plan to pick a princess at a posho party, Cinders’ ugly step-sisters set out to take his hand in marriage… by force if necessary! Cinderella’s happiness depends on her best friend Buttons. If Buttons can complete his double totes ridic cray cray mission to see Prince Charming and Cinderella marry, he’ll earn his wings from Fairy Fingringhoe. He’ll then be able to do what he’s always wanted to do – fly! This year’s pantomime will be directed by the Mercury Theatre’s Artistic Director, and director of last year’s hit production of Michael Morpurgo’s

The Butterfly Lion, Daniel Buckroyd. Daniel said, “Cinderella is a timeless story and great if you want to try panto for the first time! New Chair of the Board announced for The New Wolsey Theatre The New Wolsey Theatre has today announced that their Chair of the Board David Edwards is to stand down at the end of his term in office. He will be replaced by Richard Lister, current Vice Chair, and Provost at University Campus Suffolk, from Wednesday 10th December 2014. David Edwards says, “I have not only felt honoured to have been Chair of the New Wolsey Board over the past six years, but it has also been a great pleasure. There are almost too many highlights to mention, but standing out for me have been the string of highly successful and popular musical productions, in particular It’s A Wonderful Life and Guys and Dolls; and I have been particularly proud of the collaborative work we have done with Graeae Theatre Company, especially The Threepenny Opera andReasons to be Cheerful.

24

Having started my own career as a member of the Youth Theatre at the former Ipswich Arts Theatre back in the 1960s, I have been very impressed by the New Wolsey’s commitment to working with young people, and the productions in the Studio of the Youth Theatre, Young Company and Young Associates have been outstanding, and continue to surpass themselves with each new intake. I was personally very pleased that we were able to persuade Sir Trevor Nunn to become the theatre’s patron, and to open the newly refurbished HEG in High Street. His love of theatre, like mine, was nurtured at the old Tower Street theatre, and it is great that that carries on today on Civic Drive. I am delighted that Richard Lister has been selected to take over the role of Chair. His role and experience at University Campus Suffo k place him very well to take the theatre forward into its next successful phase”

New Chair of the Board Richard Lister says, “It’s a privilege to be asked to Chair the New Wolsey Board following David who leaves a splendid legacy. The New Wolsey Theatre is close to the hearts of many people and plays a central role in the cultural life of our town. The financial squeeze on arts organisations is acute but the Board will face this challenge, support the outstanding management and staff, and help them continue to bring outstanding productions to this fantastic theatre” The current New Wolsey Board of Directors are Emma Champion, David Clements, Bonnie Collins, Adrian Grady, Isobel Hawson, Richard Lister, Barbara Peirson, Hannah Skeates, and Chris Waters.

Forget the winter and discover the vibrant country that is BRAZIL

News from the Links

(Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club)

Travel Consultant Abi Nunn from Deben Travel in Woodbridge recently took a holiday to Brazil. Here Abi shares her experience of her trip to this vibrant country. I was recently given the fantastic opportunity to visit Brazil the fifth largest country in the world, a country so diverse, rich in history and culture, it feels like several different countries in one. My first stop was Salvador on the northern coast, home to longest urban coastline and the largest open bay in Brazil. It’s African and Portuguese influence is apparent everywhere from the architecture to the food and the old town with the cobbled streets, pastel coloured houses and the ornate baroque churches, which are a must-see. The traditional dish of the region is Moqueca Stew full of delicious seafood and vegetables served with rice and flour. Further along the coast there are many eco-tourism resorts that encourage wildlife conservation, especially the endangered

sea turtles, all surrounded by the coconut palms on beautiful unspoilt beaches. Two flights later and I was surrounded by natural beauty at the Iguassu Falls, this truly is an amazing sight, a collection of 240 natural falls that span between Brazil and Argentina. You can get up close to the magnificent falls on the viewing platforms across the river rapids or take a motorboat underneath the falls, although I chose to stay on the canyon trail and stay dry! The jungle safari in the surrounding rainforest gives the opportunity to view the unique flora and fauna. You can stay in the park with a view of the falls at the 5-Star Las Cataratas Hotel owned by Belmond Orient Express where before 8am and after 5pm the national park

is just for you. The falls were definitely a highlight of my trip. As my tour was coming to the end what better place to be than Rio De Janeiro with the iconic symbol of Sugar Loaf Mountain in view as you approach the city. The mountain stands 395 metres above sea level and is reached via two cable cars. The panoramic views of the city are amazing as are the Marmoset monkeys that come out to say hello – we also spotted a Toucan which is quite unusual to see close-up. The statue of Christ rises 2,300 feet above sea level at the top of Corcovado Hill, a chapel sits underneath the statue, and we witnessed a baptism there. The chapel is also a very popular and expensive wedding venue! The mountain train (it’s sister train resides in Switzerland) is the mode of transport and, the samba trio provide the entertainment to the top of the mountain making it an enjoyable experience, and, the views absolutely breath taking. Time to leave soon but just before we go we had time to have a caipirinha cocktail at the Copacabana Palace, the hotel choice of the rich and famous for over 90 years situated on Copacabana Beach, which does not disappoint. It is just how you would imagine it to be with locals soaking up the sun or playing volley ball and football, one of Brazil’s great passions. Now the World Cup is over they have the Olympics in 2016 to look forward too and I think we will be seeing a lot more of Brazil over the years to come. I have left Brazil with long lasting memories and great impressions of the country overall, I feel everyone should visit this fabulous country at least once in their lifetime. If you are considering a trip to Brazil or Latin America in general then please do pop in or call Deben Travel where they we will be happy to help.

As can be seen from the photo Keith was wearing his 50 year old Shooting Jacket! Keith took up Small Bore Rifle Shooting and in 1967, 1968 and 1974 he was selected to represent Suffolk. Keith is in good company as Lord Elcho (Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club’s Club Captain in 1889) was also well known for his shooting abilities, and in 1859 was involved in setting up the National Rifle Association. The Club has had a good year, particularly for the the Ladies Section – winning the Cranworth Salver, the Haskell Trophy and the Weston Plate. The Captains Drive In was extremely well supported, starting with a Shot Gun Start, Greensomes Stableford competition with over 100 members taking part. The winners were S.Livermore and D.Cloud with 40 points, second were C.Veitch and A.Veitch with 40 points and third were P.Sayers and J.Blackmore with 39 points. The winning ladies were Ann Spencer and Sue Bowler with 35 points.

Jump into January and kick start your weight loss with Kay Fletcher Fitness. Kay has been helping local men and women effectively and successfully lose weight, improve fitness and achieve greater health benefits for over seven years now. Kay says, “Losing weight, is not easy and I appreciate that the process needs to be an enjoyable experience and not a punishing one, which is why I am so excited to be telling you about a fresh and innovative weight management programme that I am launching in January, called the H.F.T Weight Management Plan” The new High Frustration Tolerance (H.F.T) Weight Management Plan turns dieting on its head, putting the focus of change on “mood” as opposed to on “food”. There are no rules telling you what you should or must eat, as these rules are too rigid and do not allow for human fall bility. The H.F.T food plan is well balanced, sens ble but flex ble (created to suit all pallets) and the main focus will be on ensuring that anyone who signs up for the four week course receives an intensive level of emotional support as they work towards changing their beliefs and developing a more positive mindset about choosing the right foods and being more active. Members will receive daily motivational messages of support, tips and advice and a weekly exercise challenge. If you want to make 2015 your year for losing

weight and feeling healthier then don’t miss out on this opportunity to sign up and be a part of the first ever H.F.T Weight Management Course. Each of the four sessions will consist of educational, thought provoking talks with motivational fun tasks created to help you change the way you THINK, followed by an indoor bootcamp style exercise class where you will be working out together with other likeminded people. You will be required to commit to the four week plan and in addition you will also receive free vouchers to attend one of Kay’s exercise classes every week. Caroline Whiting, a health and fitness expert, who created this concept lost two stone over the four month period that she was trialling the HFT plan

and says “I’ve never really liked salads, lots of vegetables, tomato based foods and have always found diets very difficult to follow. On the H.F.T Plan I chose to eat all the foods I enjoyed (just in smaller quantities) and offset this by taking regular exercise”. If you would like to sign up for the very first four week H.F.T course with Kay commencing in January, please call her on 01473 613397 for more details. The start dates will be: Saturday 10th January (am) or Tuesday 13th January (pm) – places will be limited so get yourself booked in now and then you can relax and enjoy your Christmas and New Year.

The main threats to your teeth from alcoholic drinks are their high sugar content and acidity. The sugars create a breeding ground for bacteria and plaque, while the acids can cause erosion of your tooth enamel, making them more susceptible to decay and sensitivity.

• Meticulous hygiene therapy

Research also tells us that drinking alcohol to excess is linked to around a third of all cases of mouth cancers. Look after your smile

Our door is always open to new patients. Please give our friendly team a ring for more information. We look forward to hearing from you.

* After a night out, brush your teeth before you go to bed for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste. Remember to leave about an hour after your last alcoholic drink before you brush.

One of the best ways of keeping your mouth, teeth and gums in the peak of health is to visit your dentist and hygienist regularly, at least every six months.

A hangover is a side effect of Alcohol consumption that causes a disruption to your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. These disruptors can include headaches, a poor sense of wellbeing, constipation or diarrhoea, fatigue, sleepiness, nausea, dizziness, emotional imbalances and aggression. Hangovers happen when you’re already overburdened livers struggle to clear out the excessive amount of toxins and chemicals ingested from too much alcohol. Blood sugar dips and your body become dehydrated, and overall fatigue takes over. It craves potassium, natural sugars and other vital vitamins and minerals. Here are a few Natural Remedies that could help you reduce the side effects of alcohol and help your body to recover quicker.

antioxidants and enzymes to support the body both inside and out. Drink a glass at the end of the night for instant detoxifying and hydration and again in the morning.

Tomatoes

There’s a reason why people love drinking Bloody Marys the day after going on a bender - it’s rich in the vitamins, minerals and enzymes that the booze robs your body of and it contains fructose which aids in metabolising alcohol in your system. One way to stop the room from spinning is to drink some tomato juice mixed with a little cayenne pepper, sugar, and lime

Eggs are said to have a beneficial effect on reducing the effects of a hangover because they contain an amino acid called cysteine which breaks down the toxin acetaldehyde produced by too much alcohol consumption Try coconut water as means to prevent a hangover from happening in the first place. Drinking coconut water before, during (try using it in mixed drinks) and even right before crashing out can help replace vital nutrients. Coconut water contains valuable electrolytes of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphate.

Wheatgrass

Carbohydrates

If you’re on a low-carb diet, ditch it just for today. One of the best ways to stop that queasy feeling is to go against what your body is telling you and eat something, preferably a healthy portion of carbs to soak up all of that alcohol in your stomach. It’s best to go with something bland l ke bread and butter or plain pasta.

your body metabolize the alcohol and it also contains potassium, just l ke bananas.

Water Bananas

You might have heard that bananas are favoured by athletes because they contain potassium and it’s that same reason that makes them great hangover cures. When you’re hung-over, your body has lost a lot of potassium that needs to be replenished, so eating a banana when you wake up will provide much needed relief. Or, if you’re still able to stand after you get home from drinking, having a banana before you pass out will help start your recovery even sooner.

Honey

Honey is one of those miracle foods that has so many applications and helping hangovers is one of them! The fructose in the yummy honey helps

Suffo k Cruse Bereavement Care is £3,334 richer – thanks to a national recycling scheme supported by Ipswich Borough Council. After each cremation, and with the agreement of the family, the metals from the coffin, along with orthopaedic implants, are recycled. The scheme is endorsed by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management. A cheque was presented to Angus McGready, Chair of the Ipswich Branch of

Suffo k Cruse, by Councillor Sophie Meudec, Portfolioholder for Bereavement Services. Councillor Meudec said, "We strive to prevent metals that are left following a cremation from being unnecessarily buried and posing a threat to the environment. It is always going to be a sensitive issue, so we are part of a national recycling scheme that enables us to nominate organisations for a donation as all of the proceeds go

Sorry, I know I go on about Water but I really could not compile a natural hangover cure list without including good old H20. It’s tried and tested and it will work especially if you include some of the other remedies above. Try and drink one glass of water for every glass of alcohol or even alternate your drinks with water when you’re at the party!! to bereavement-based charities. “I am certain that bereaved families would be reassured to know that this money is supporting such an important and worthwhile cause that brings comfort and support to so many people." Angus McGready, Chair of the Ipswich Branch of Suffolk Cruse, said, "Suffo k Cruse Bereavement Care is a voluntary organisation providing support to bereaved people, regardless

of their background. As one of the lesser-known charities, raising funds for our unpaid volunteers to maintain our service is a real struggle in the current environment and this year we have come close to restricting our services. This money will make a very real difference allowing us to continue to provide quality support to the bereaved in Suffolk for which we are very grateful to receive this wonderful donation.”
