How big business ideas come to life in Fort Wayne

A Message from the Executive Director Here in Continuing Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, we champion small business. We understand that entrepreneurs are the backbone of our community. They stimulate our economy and cater to the unique needs of our region. Not only do we host the NE-ISBDC, we also offer a wide range of business support and training opportunities that are easily accessible. With courses ranging from project management to leadership development to professional selling, look for the SMALL BUSINESS icon throughout this catalog for more information.

When Gary Skeel and his wife Kelly had the idea for a unique hotspot – Wine Down Tastings and Tapas – they needed some help. Neither had owned a business before, and needed guidance with everything from a business plan to 5 year profit/loss projections, to location considerations. So they turned to the Northeast Indiana Small Business Development Center (NE-ISBDC), hosted by IPFW and its Division of Continuing Studies. The NE-ISBDC provides entrepreneurs like the Skeels with expert guidance and a vast network of resources. “Both the investors and banks needed to see our vision on paper,” stated Gary, “So Wes, from the NE-ISBDC helped provide us with the necessary communication tools. Wes was very helpful in the planning phase and was there for us whenever we had questions.”

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Wine Down Tastings & Tapas – another NE-ISBDC success story.

The NE-ISBDC has provided guidance in 36 business starts in Northeast Indiana, infusing nearly $10 million into the regional economy in 2014 alone. Fort Wayne in particular has been named a top city to start a business by two online sources.* The Skeels are happy with their decision to locate Wine Down in Fort Wayne. Kelly stated, “The amount of support and encouragement we received proved Northeast Indiana’s dedication toward providing small businesses the tools they need to succeed.” *NerdWallet and WalletHub

Conflict Management Certificate Series –NEW Conflict is as common in today’s society as a trip to the gas station or a grocery store. Although conflict is generally seen as negative, it can also work to our advantage. The nature of the conflict is important. However, how we manage the conflict is critical. This four-part conflict management series explores conflict within an individual, interpersonal conflict, conflict between an individual and a group, intergroup conflict, and inter-organizational conflict.

Conflict Management: Ready and Willing At the core of most conflict is the inability to manage it effectively. This workshop will explore the origins of conflict, conflicting motives or ideologies, and the building blocks of conflict management strategy.
