By investing in the health of our community, we made a difference for our patients. During September 2009, nearly 1,025 employees invested in healthcare excellence through the Employee Giving Campaign by contributing more than $627,000 to the Iowa Health Foundation. Their contributions support various programs at the Iowa Health Foundation, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Blank Children’s Hospital, Methodist West Hospital, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Taylor House Hospice, United Way and Variety, The Children’s Charity. Special thanks to our employee donors for Making Magic Happen in 2009!

...Hula-ed

The Des Moines Botanical Center was transformed into a tropical paradise for the second annual Hula for Hospice on November 6, filled with island music, hula dancing, delicious food and exotic drinks. Hospice volunteers helped with invitations, gathering auction items and decorations. More than 120 people attended and had a great time while supporting Iowa Health Hospice. All proceeds from the silent auction support the work of the Iowa Health Hospice Good Samaritan Fund, which provides financial assistance to patients at Taylor House and in their homes. Through generous gifts to this fund, no one is turned away from receiving our care and given the dignity they deserve in their dying days. Iowa Health Hospice also honored the recipient of the Iowa Health Hospice Volunteer of the Year, Debbie Baier. Debbie provides respite for caregivers and is a loyal friend and compassionate listener for her patients. No matter what the request, Debbie is always willing to accept the challenge. In addition to helping patients and their families, she assists with many special projects. Last spring, she used her talents to illustrate a children’s coloring book for our bereavement team. Her compassion, dependability, creativity and willingness to help in every situation make her an extremely valuable part of the Iowa Health Hospice Team.

...Decorated Trees

The 26th Annual Blank Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights was a huge success in 2009. More than $350,000 was raised in support of Child Life and the Center for Advocacy and Outreach. Child Life was established in 1991 to make every child’s medical experience as physically and emotionally positive as possible. The Child Life staff helps children find ways to cope with anxiety, fear and separation from friends and family while helping them gain confidence to face any procedure or challenge on their journey. Child Life services are used across the hospital. The Center for Advocacy and Outreach was created and has continued to grow in order to provide outreach programs that address children’s health and safety needs. Key initiatives include safety and injury prevention, children’s healthcare, grassroots advocacy, healthy lifestyles, early literacy and child abuse prevention. Martha James, 2009 Honorary Chair; the planning committee; tree decorators; and the hundreds of volunteers who generously donated their time and talents to make this event such a success are greatly appreciated. Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Iowa Realty, for their continued support at that level over the past four years.
