There is no doubt that the touchscreens outnumber keyboards in India with mobile Internet traffic exceeding the desktop traffic. The mobile phones and its apps are increasingly used to search for restaurants, bus times, and weather reports.

he Indian market has been lapping up the smartphones. From the Indian makers to the Chinese ones and the iconic iPhone, the Indian consumer has been adopting smartphones with great excitement . Smartphones have turned to become an important media for communication and entertainment in India. The expectations for the market has been positive and promising. But despite this promise, the Indian mobile sales have dropped for the first time in 20 years. Mobile (feature phones and smartphones combined) sales dropped 14.5 percent the first quarter (Q1, JanuaryMarch) 2015, on a quarter-to-quarter basis, compared to Q4 (October-December) 2014. Sales fell from 62 million handsets in Q4 2014 to 53 million handsets in Q1 2015, according to a report of CyberMedia Research, a consultancy.

COVERSTORY The decline in smartphone sales from quarter-to-quarter was 7.14 percent. Cheaper feature phones performed worse, with an 18.3 percent sales decline over the same period. India became the fastest-growing market for smartphones in Asia-Pacific in 2014, and is supposed to overtake US as the second-largest smartphone market globally, with 204 million smartphone users by 2016, according to a study by eMarketer, a research firm. The market is still hugely unexplored for the market to have reached staturation but there have been a pelothra of reasons for the slowdown. But there is no doubting that the smartphone has become an integral part of the consumers. They are using the mobile phone not only to make and receive calls but as important computing tool for their everyday lives. According to TRAI, private operators hold 88.9 percent of the wireless market share based on subscriber base, whereas government’s 2 PSU operators hold only 11.5 percent. Apps and services still account for the least

amount of money in mobile computing. The market is still nascent with mobile advertising bringing in only $9 billion as yet. But here is where the most opportunities lie. Facebook has a monthly audience as large as any ever reached. Almost everyone has joined the social network be it Twitter, Linkedin or Instagram. The younger consumers are increasingly using the smartphones to access their varied social network platforms. And in January, it said for the first time that more of that audience was coming from mobile devices than from PCs.Smartphones have been outselling PCs for some time. Mobile wallets, which can be easily maintained on cell phones, have completely changed the way people make payments. The consumers can use their mobile phones to pay for various types of services rather than making payments in cash or by cheque and credit cards. The number of consumers adopting mobile wallets will increase in 2015, thanks to solutions offered by Citrus Pay, Mobikwik, Paytm, and Oxigen. The smartphones are likely to take up the jobs of cards and cash with mobile phone scanning to become the trend in the near future. There are even offline stores where consumers who do not have debit/credit cards can recharge their accounts to pay. In India only 11 percent of people are on the Internet, but just about everyone already has a mobile phone. Wireless smartphones and tablets will find its avenue only through faster technology and better data coverage. There is a huge group of consumers who are yet to buy smartphones and get on to the internet. Hence, mobile computing holds a huge potential for the Indian market.
