Welcome

Thank you for joining us!

When we were pregnant with our first babies, we both thought we were ready for birth and motherhood; but in reality, we were a little unprepared. And once our babies arrived, our support networks and knowledge of local resources proved to be inadequate. Being a mother is arguably the most wonderful job in the world...but it doesn’t come without its challenges! We both welcomed our second babies over the summer, and although we’re more confident this time around, we’re also facing a new set of challenges. Our goal is that you leave today with a realistic picture of what it’s like to bring home a newborn, inspiration for how to care for yourself in your new role as a mom, ideas for how to support your little one’s health and development as they grow from an infant into a toddler, and insight into where you can find help when you need it...from nonprofits that can support your family’s needs, to products & services that cater to you & your baby. This year, we’re proud to donate proceeds from expo admission and raffle ticket sales to March of Dimes. Every year, four million babies are born healthy, thanks in part to their educational materials and programs, advocacy, and awarenss campaigns. They also serve babies more directly by providing grant funding to relevant programs, community outreach, support in the NICU and research on birth defects. Thank you for the role you’ve played in supporting this important organization. We’re excited to welcome several new organizations in 2014, and would like to give thanks to those who have supported us again in our second year. Thank you for letting us help you embrace everything that’s Beyond the Bump! Sincerely,

Monica Infante & Melissa Bowie Co-Founders of Beyond the Bump

Healthy Defiance in Toddlers by Ann Douglas

Don’t assume you’re raising a diva just because your toddler gives you a withering stare or stomps out of the room when you ask her to pick up her toys. She’s simply letting you know that she feels confident enough in herself and in the relationship she has with you to play the autonomy card every now and again, according to Theodore Dix, associate professor of human development and family science at the University of Texas at Austin. “We found that, at this age, defiance appeared to be a positive development,” says Dix. He headed up a team of researchers from the University of Austin at Texas and the University of Michigan, who researched this issue and reported on their findings in the psychological journal, Child Development. The study results indicate that when parents first ask young children to follow requests, it’s natural for them to resist. This resistance does not indicate that there’s anything wrong with the parent-child relationship or that the child’s development is off track. It actually indicates quite the opposite -- that the child feels confident in her ability to exercise control over those closest to her and that she is prepared to do just that. Learn more about toddler behavior and parenting strategies in “What Makes a Toddler TIck?” at 10:15 am (Henrietta C), and “The Challenging Toddler” at 3:15 pm (Jefferson Room).

Practicing Mindfulness in Pregnancy and Early Motherhood by Ann Douglas

It’s impossible to overlook the physical changes of pregnancy. But, as dramatic as those changes may be, the invisible transformations you experience en route to motherhood are every bit as far-reaching.

Talk to other mothers who have made this journey before you. Ask them to share their best advice about pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood; and to recommend the most helpful community resources (birth centers, lactation consultants, La Leche League groups, mom and baby groups) and information sources (books, websites, videos).

The months before birth represent an opportunity for tremendous personal growth and development—an opportunity for you to become more in-tune with your body, to prepare for the challenges of labor and birth, and to start thinking about the type of relationship you would like to have with your baby.

Adopt a learning mindset. Welcome the fact that you feel like you still have so much to learn about the journey ahead. Let that trigger a hunger for new knowledge about birth, babies, and beyond. Practice mindfulness. Learn what it means to be mindful— and introduce the elements of mindfulness into your life as a pregnant woman and, eventually, a new mother. Being mindful involves being fully present in the moment (as opposed to obsessing about the past or worrying about the future); being nonjudgmental (accepting and having realistic expectations of yourself and others), being emotionally aware of your own needs and the needs of others (which, in turn, allows you to be more responsive to your own needs and the needs of others), managing your own emotions (which reduces the likelihood that you will overreact when you are frustrated while increasing the likelihood that you will act with your big-picture values and goals in mind), and practicing compassion for yourself and others (which keeps your focus on the process of parenting over the long-term rather than how well things went on any particular day).

Here are some practical things you can do to make the most of this truly transformative time. Try to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection every day connecting with your baby and appreciating the miracle that your body is performing right now. Allow your worries to drift away. Train your brain to be fully present in the moment—a skill that you will find invaluable in savoring the joys of motherhood. Think about all the miraculous processes that are taking place within your very own body right now. If you haven’t always practiced body acceptance up to this point in your life, this would be a great time to start. (You might even want to adopt this phrase from birth activist Karen Brody as your personal pregnancy mantra: “My body rocks!”)

Ten Things You Need to Know About Pregnancy by Ann Douglas Want the real nitty gritty about having a baby? Here are ten things that your best friend might forget to tell you, but that you definitely need to know: 1. If you wait for every possible labor symptom to kick in before heading off to labor and delivery, you’ll end up giving birth on your bathroom floor. While you may be afraid of embarrassing yourself by

showing up at the hospital in false labor, you’ll look even more foolish if you end up giving birth on the side of the highway in the middle of rush hour. 2. There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all labor. You could end up with one of those long, drawn-out

labors that everyone in your life seems to delight in telling you about - or could find you’re with one of those dream deliveries that’s bound to make you the envy of your prenatal class buddies.

3. Your birth plan isn’t necessarily a blueprint for the actual delivery. Just as some guys seem to think

it’s a personal failing to look at a roadmap while they’re driving, some babies seem determined to ignore the birth plans that their mommies have so carefully drafted. Bottom line? Your birth plan is a wish list, not a legal document. 4. Pregnancy books are big on euphimisms. This point was hammered home for me by one of the moms I

interviewed for The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: “You know how the pregnancy books all describe the ‘slight burning sensation’ that you’re supposed to experience when the baby’s head begins to crown?” she told me. “Well, it’s like a ----ing blowtorch!” 5. You may not feel like bonding with your partner while you’re in labor. Rather than being tempted to

whisper sweet nothings in his ear, as those women in the birthing films all seem to do, you may want to kick his sorry butt out of the birthing room altogether. After all, he helped to get you in this predicament in the first place! 6. You may not fall head-over-heels with your new baby right away. The fact that you’d rather take a nap

than spend a lot of time oohing and ahhing over the new arrival does not automatically mean you’ve blown your nomination for Mother of the Year.

7. The blood clots you pass during the first few hours after the delivery could be the size of small lemons.

While some pregnancy books still like to compare the bleeding that you’ll experience after the delivery to “a heavy menstrual period” - that’s not exactly telling it like it is. 8. You may experience some nipple tenderness during the first few days of breastfeeding - even if you’re doing everything right. As any experienced nursing mother can tell you, it takes a little time to break

your equipment in. (Aren’t you glad that Mother Nature had the foresight to equip you with a spare?)

9. You’ll be slimmer after the delivery, but you won’t be skinny. As a rule of thumb, you can expect to

look about five months pregnant after you deliver - a whole lot slimmer than what you’ve looked like in the recent past, but not quite slim enough to be mistaken for a supermodel the first time you hit the grocery store. 10. The real “labor” begins after you’ve given birth. While those first few weeks of parenthood can be an

emotional rollercoaster ride for even the most caring and committed parent, they do get better over time. You just have to make it through “baby boot camp” - the first few weeks postpartum - first. And you will! Learn more about life with with your new baby in “Heading Home: Adjusting to Life with a Newborn” at 1:15 pm (Jefferson Room).

New Baby on the Way By Ann Douglas

You’re becoming an old pro at this parenting thing. In fact, you’ve decided to have another baby. Now you’re wondering what you need to know to prepare your first born for the arrival of baby number two. Start spreading the news. Let your older child hear the baby news from you before she hears it through the family or neighbourhood grapevine. Let her know that there’s a baby on the way and that she’ll soon be someone’s big sister. Involve your older child in your pregnancy. Take your older child to your prenatal checkups so that she can hear the baby’s heartbeat and watch the doctor or midwife measuring your belly. This will help to make the pregnancy feel more real for her.

Do your best to answer your child’s questions. Speak to her about pregnancy and birth in an age-appropriate way. (Don’t start bombarding her with every fascinating fact you just read in your pregnancy book. Try to figure out what she’s really asking, and answer those questions in the simplest and most straightforward manner possible.)

Have a plan. Let your child know what will happen around the time of the baby’s birth. Will you be giving birth at home or in hospital? Will Grandma and Grandpa be coming to the house to help take care of her while you’re in labor? What will happen after the baby is born? Your child needs to know what to expect so that she’ll feel safe and secure.

Don’t oversell the new baby. Newborn babies are pretty boring (at least from the viewpoint of a preschooler who is looking for a playmate). Make sure your older child has a realistic idea of what new babies are really like so she won’t be too disappointed when the new baby shows up. Spend some time with a friend who has a newborn so your child can learn a bit about babies before she meets her new brother or sister.

Accept that you can never fully prepare anyone for the birth of a baby. Just as you were both surprised, amazed and more than a little overwhelmed by the birth of your first child, your firstborn will experience a range of emotions when she meets her new brother or sister. What matters is that you allow her to express those feelings and that you find ways to reassure her that she is still loved as much as ever. Having a new baby in the family won’t change that at all.
