BETTER, FASTER, SMARTER

A FORMULA THAT CAN SAVE AUSTRALIA’S MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Manufacturing – once the reliable workhorse of the Australian economy – is now facing more challenges than ever before.

3D MAPPING A 'PISA' CAKE FOR AUSSIE SCIENTISTS Page 14

The manufacturing sector employs almost one million Australians, yet it accounts for less than 10 percent of Australian GDP – down from 29 percent in the late 1950s. The sector’s vulnerability was highlighted by Holden’s recent announcement it will cease vehicle manufacturing in Australia. What’s the answer? How do we revitalise this key sector and build a future for Australian manufactures among the world’s most advanced nations? And critically, how can we compete with low-cost, regional manufacturers, particularly in Asia?

IU EXCLUSIVE GERMAN MANUFACTURING AT ITS BEST PAGE 16

HOW SAFE ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES? PAGE 26

The Australian Government is currently proposing that we transition from heavy industrial manufacturing – ships, cars and steel – to high valueadded production. The Government’s proactive policy is arguing for a focus on intense innovation in high- tech manufacturing, using advanced processes, materials and technologies. This way, so the argument goes, we can improve our competitiveness against Asian manufacturers, re-energise our entrepreneurial talent, and – hopefully – develop high-value, niche export markets.

MTI QUALOS OPENS NEW DOOR ON SAFETY

Overhead doors can present a potential safety hazard for customers, workers and workplace visitors. Faulty entrance and exit doors may not only cause serious injury, they can also result in hefty compensation payouts. Now industrial door specialist MTI Qualos has launched a new line of commercial and industrial Traffic Swing Doors with a strong focus on safety. The new swing doors are a safe alternative to overhead doors in industrial workplaces. To find out more see our special Industrial Doors feature on page 24.

A FORMULA THAT CAN SAVE AUSTRALIA’S MANUFACTURING SECTOR That’s a nice example of visionary thinking. But Australian manufacturer Mr Matt De Carolis is staking his workaday future on a much more practical, down-to-earth approach. Mr De Carolis has had more than 25-years experience in the construction industry. His firm De Carolis Constructions Pty Ltd is based in Melbourne’s North – an

Drag Chain

acknowledged hub of economic vibrancy. With a population of about one million, the area encompasses around 22 percent of Melbourne working age population. Its 55,000 businesses contribute about 10 percent of Australia’s exports and 20 percent of Victoria’s manufactured exports. In a recent survey, some 64 percent of Melbourne’s North manufacturing firms said that 80 to 100 percent of their

Conduits & Fittings

production would go overseas – only 36 percent said their production would remain in Australia. According to Mr De Carolis Australian manufacturing is currently under enormous pressure to find the right mix between “localizing and “globalizing its supply chain. For many Australian firms getting this balance right is critical to their success. “The sector is constantly being stalked by increasing costs, compliance and consolidation, says Mr De Carolis. “Manufacturing is finding it hard to survive let alone expand. So, why in this environment are firms heavily investing in plant and machinery?

Cable Entry Sytems

A 2012 survey of manufacturing in Melbourne’s North revealed that 66 percent of manufacturing firms had completed significant upgrades to plant and equipment in the last five years. Apparently firms of all ages were upgrading their plant and equipment, some even reporting a constant round of equipment upgrades to remain competitive. And yet 37 percent of these firms said they expected volumes to be less in 10 years’ time, and nearly half said their firm was less profitable than it was 10 years ago. Which means that, despite all that investment for many businesses, volume

production is going down while the cost of production is going up. But there is a way out, according to Mr De Carolis. “We call it ‘Smart Manufacturing’. It entails matching and maximising the expertise of overseas specialists with De Carolis’ own in-house manufacturing, building and fit-out capabilities. It can be summed up as working Better, Faster, Smarter – an approach that achieves the best results for our commercial and industrial clients,” he said. The De Carolis manufacturing operations are 50 per cent “intellectual” and 50 per cent “finalisation.” The company’s strategy is to source major components either locally or overseas and to finish them to our detailed specification in our own factory. “Having our own manufacturing facility means when something isn’t quite right with externally supplied components, we can fix it immediately. In other words it incorporates agility into the project delivery process,” says Mr De Carolis. “Smart manufacturing also offers greater control and the ability to meet tight deadlines. It enables us to make quick adjustments rather than being forced to rely on major manufacturers to make last minute changes. “On top of that it’s far more capitalefficient than outlaying millions of dollars on major machinery to undertake the entire manufacturing process yourself.” At present, De Carolis has embarked upon a Smart Manufacturing expansion program. It plans to expand its Melbourne North head office and triple the capacity of its adjacent Smart Manufacturing facility. When completed, this will allow it to take on 87 full-time employees such as tradesmen, administrators, labourers and managers. Understandably, Mr De Carolis has no time for those prophesying the doom of Australian manufacturing. “We believe in the future of manufacturing in Australia. We believe in taking a smarter approach and not seeing success as something judged on size and turnover alone,” says Mr De Carolis. “The quality of our innovation and the

quality of our delivery is the key. Another essential is the systems we employ. An Australian manufacturer should either acquire or develop the best possible systems and never cease looking for an even better solution. Indeed, the speed of change across every industry – including construction – means all manufacturers should be committed to a process of continual development and improvement. “I believe the key to on-going business productivity and viability rests with systems and processes – lean systems and manufacturing innovations that will optimise supply chains, quality, material flows, stock management productivity, equipment up-time, preventative maintenance, housekeeping and safety, he says. “As part of our Smart Manufacturing expansion project, we have carried out a detailed analysis of the skills that exist within the soon-to-close Ford Broadmeadows manufacturing facility. It is our intention to source as many highly skilled and trained Ford employees to fill future positions within our expansion program.” Mr De Carolis sees productivity – or the lack of it – as the prime concern of Australian manufacturing. “The skills are here, but Australia needs to jettison its 1970s thinking and re-align its manufacturing priorities, which must include the retraining and up-skilling of the labour force, he says. “The industry’s future will depend on highly skilled workers and the manufacture of high value-added components.” De Carolis has currently 15 jobs running at the same time. With a successful track record in commercial construction, refurbishment, fit-out and construction management and incorporating a manufacturing facility to support its operations, the firm has grown to a financially stable and sizeable organisation that can confidently take on any project. Manufacturing Australia Chief Executive Sue Morphett recently said that she is optimistic that manufacturing in Australia can re-bound after 10 years of difficulty. Mr De Carolis endorses her optimism.

STICKING TO YOUR GUNS CAN OFTEN BACKFIRE

END OF THE ROAD FOR CARMAKERS: WHERE TO NOW?

Let’s hear it for union boss Paul Howes. Finally we have a union official who is prepared to face reality – industrial relations reform holds the key to the future of manufacturing in Australia. Mr Howes has proposed that unions enter into a new partnership with the Coalition Federal Government and business to rein in high wages and lift productivity. This new spirit of co-operation is reminiscent of the Hawke-Keating government's highly successful accord with unions in the 1980s. Not surprisingly, Howes’ comments have put many of his comrades’ noses out of joint. He has not only broken ranks with the union movement, but also the Labour opposition who have been strongly campaigning against any dilution of current workplace agreements. They have rejected out of hand any suggestion that Tony Abbott would be interested in working with the trade union movement. But a bi-partisan working relationship is not only be in the best interests of the manufacturing sector – it’s in the best interests of Australia. It comes at a time when manufacturing is facing many its toughest challenges. Recent announcements of closures and job losses in the car industry and

more recently SPC Ardmona are testimony to that. Mr Howes agreed with what many employers have been saying for many months: “Our industrial relations system is dragging us down.” Mr Howes rightly points out that powerful unions are pricing themselves out of the market with unsustainably high wages, claiming that unions have “overreached” in some wage claims. In a recent address to the National Press Club he said corrupt union officials were ''traitors'' to the cause and that endless conflict was economically disastrous. A new bi-partisan industrial relations policy would not only help to lift productivity – it would save jobs. By sticking to their guns on workplace reform, the union movement has jeopardized the futures of the people it has been so desperately trying to protect – workers. An overhaul of our industrial relations policy is long overdue. Let’s bring it on! It's also no surprise that our PM has welcomed the Howes proposal. Mr Abbott says he wants to maximise Australian jobs and pay. But quite rightly he adds that to be among the best paid workers in the world we have to be among the most productive workers.

The decision by Holden and Ford to close their doors in Australia has sent shock waves through the manufacturing sector. The closure of these two automotive giants represents the end of an era for Australian car manufacturing. Ford, Australia’s oldest automotive manufacturer, will close its Australian manufacturing plants in October 2016, with the loss of hundreds of jobs. And General Motors has confirmed it will cease manufacturing in Australia the following year. The implications for our remaining carmaker Toyota are significant. Toyota is now the “last man standing” and is currently considering its future options in Australia. More recently SPC Ardmona announced it would sack 73 workers at its Goulburn Valley processing plant as the struggling company fights for survival. Just as the government has closed the door on future hand-outs to the automotive industry, it has firmly rejected SPC's plea for $25 million towards a restructuring package. The government’s stance has renewed debate around government-subsidised industry sectors. But would these government bailout packages make any difference? They are merely a band-aid solution

for a far more serious problem – it is becoming increasing difficult to compete against cheap labour nations. So is there a future for manufacturing in Australia? Absolutely. But obviously we must find ways of doing it “smarter” than many of our competitors. If there is to be no more large-scale car manufacturing, it is imperative to look for viable alternatives. To achieve this a collaborative approach is needed between all relevant stakeholders – government, unions and employers. There is a need to focus on developing skills within the work force. Rather than throwing taxpayer dollars into flailing Australian manufacturing industries, a more considered approach is needed. Perhaps we should focus more on technology design and development. Perhaps we should become a more “specialized” within the manufacturing sector. There is no reason why Australia could not become a world leader in designing and building car components or in designing computer systems in cars. To achieve this, there must be an agenda for growth. A long-term economy plan is urgently needed with consensus and consultation from all key players.

TYRE RECYCLING SCHEME A ‘VICTORY’ FOR INDUSTRY

The announcement of a voluntary Australian tyre recycling scheme is a significant victory for those members of the industry who have worked for many years to make tyre retailing more sustainable. That is the opinion of Toyo Tyre & Rubber Australia, which has welcomed the launch of the Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) scheme. Federal Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt announced details of the scheme last month. Toyo is one of several prominent tyre brands – representing about 60 per cent of the volume of the Australian tyre market – supporting the TSA scheme. Toyo Tyre & Rubber Australia's chief executive officer Michael Rudd said the new scheme was a great response to an issue that was increasingly attracting the attention of governments and the public. "At Toyo, we believe the creation of sustainable industry practices relating to the environment is a top priority, Mr Rudd said.

"Although advanced fuel-efficient tyre technology already makes a substantial contribution, we also have a responsibility to ensure we find the best possible disposal solution for these tyres once they reach the end of their useful life." TSA estimates approximately 48.5 million tyres reach the end of their life in Australia each year, but only 16 per cent of those are recycled. This compares with recycling rates of 43 per cent in Europe and 32 per cent in the US. At present, most old tyres are landfilled, stockpiled, exported or illegally dumped. This poses serious health and environmental risks. The new industry initiative aims to increase domestic tyre recycling, support new technologies, expand the market for tyre-derived products and reduce the number of end-of-life tyres ending up in landfill or illegal dumps. Tyres are a valuable commodity with great potential to be utilised at end of life in a range of applications. Recycled tyres can be used to make new rubber products, in roads and pavements, and in sporting fields and playgrounds. Old tyres can also be used as an alternative fuel source for producers of energy and cement. Stakeholders across the tyre supply chain, including tyre and vehicle importers, retailers, fleet operators, local governments, collectors, recyclers and the mining industry will participate in the new scheme.

CONTENTS Major type importers Continental, Goodyear Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama have provided the initial funding to get the scheme started. As part of this major new agreement, participants in the scheme will commit to only working with others who support environmentally sound end of life management of tyres. These commitments will be supported by an audit program and education products about best practice will be developed. The scheme will also support new technology and ways to develop stronger domestic markets for tyre derived products to strengthen the demand for local tyre recycling. Toyo is hopeful that once the TSA scheme is successfully operational, tyre brands not currently involved will lend their support. "We believe that the sustainable disposal of used tyres can be achieved without imposing an onerous cost burden on the trade or consumers," Mr Rudd said. The tyre industry has established a company called Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) to administer the new scheme, to be chaired by Mr Gerry Morvell. The work of Tyre Stewardship Australia will complement important efforts of state and territory governments who are working to ensure that those who handle and dispose of tyres are doing so responsibly and in accordance with the law.

Another logistics result.

When Coca-Cola Amatil wanted to build a new distribution centre to service their route trade, they asked Dematic if they had any bright ideas. It was a big task: 14,000 customers, regional and metropolitan deliveries from Bega to Coffs, 700 SKUs, and a demand for shorter lead times. Big tasks call for big answers, and Dematic’s specialist food and beverage design team worked closely with CCA to develop a whole new distribution concept. After exhaustive simulation and the development of patented software, a world’s first picking solution was delivered that helped CCA exceed their distribution goals while achieving outstanding productivity, greater accuracy and lower overall distribution costs. That’s what we call a logistics result.

STRONG FOCUS ON SAFETY AT NMW 2014 National Manufacturing Week (NMW) and the National Safety Council of Australia (NSCA) have joined forces to make workplace safety a priority at this year’s show. More than 150 workers lost their lives in the Australian workplace last year. As a result, National Manufacturing Week is aiming to make Australian workplaces the safest in the world through its new partnership with NSCA. NSCA’s landmark presence at NMW2014 will include a stand in the Health and Safety Product Zone, where the NSCA will showcase safety solutions and training products. Also, experts will be on-hand to outline consulting and auditing resources available to industry. Visitors to the NSCA stand can have their safety questions answered at no cost by Australia’s leading safety experts. NSCA will also participate in the NMW Health and Safety Solutions Theatre. This dedicated area on the exhibition floor will house a rolling series of presentations – live and free-toattend for visitors. The Theatre will feature OH&S experts with strategies, ideas and inspiration about creating safe workplaces.

Adam Baldock, CEO of the NSCA said: “The unfortunate fact is that many of the workplace injuries and deaths we saw in 2013 came from the manufacturing sector.” “We are firmly committed to reducing these statistics – by giving industry the skills and resources to reduce their risks – and where better than National Manufacturing Week for the NSCA to showcase its commitment?” Exhibition Director for NMW 2014, Anthony Reed says the NSCA’s participation adds further momentum to the Health and Safety Product Zone. NMW 2014 will be held at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park from May 13-16. Entry is free for trade. For more information, visit: www. nationalmanufacturingweek.com.au or ph: 02 9422 2568

And, in an industry first, NMW will provide opportunities to connect directly with research providers at a special R&D Hub. This is the first time Ausplas has been held in conjunction with NMW in Sydney. Held every three years, Ausplas presents many of the most significant innovations in plastics – Australia’s secondlargest manufacturing industry sector. NMW 2014 will also introduce six new Product Zones focusing at the drivers of manufacturing innovation. These include the fast-growing Digital and Additive manufacturing sectors, and Machine Tools, which will have everything from CNC machining centres to laser equipment on active display. There will also be a new Engineering Services Product Zone. Supported by Engineers Australia – the sector’s peak body – this new Product Zone will present solutions for transforming manufacturing processes. Event organiser, Reed Exhibitions has also changed the nature of other

Product Zones in line with industry developments. The Automation & Robotics area, for example, will include total solutions and collaborative robotics, while Clean Tech (the former Sustainable Manufacturing Zone) will present a broader range of sustainable manufacturing technologies. In all, NMW 2014 will present a record 15 Product Zones, plus three open-access Solutions Theatres – for Digital Manufacturing, Health & Safety and Plastics – where visitors will gain valuable insights from presentations and demonstrations by industry experts and selected exhibitors. In a major new development, NMW 2014 will also house a R&D Hub, in which industry can speak directly with research providers about their work and opportunities for collaboration and commercialisation. “Each year, we review NMW in line with independent research and Reed Exhibition’s own intelligence on industry directions, said NMW Exhibition Director, Anthony Reed. “Arising from the research findings, NMW 2014’s new floorplan will highlight ideas, technologies and strategies that are helping manufacturers drive sales growth.” Mr Reed said NMW would provide more opportunities – through the Solutions Theatre and R&D Hub – for industry to make the contacts and conversations that spark new ideas. “In all, NMW 2014 has been designed to give more ideas to a broader cross section of industry, he said. “We’re aiming to provide more reasons to visit – and therefore, more reasons to exhibit.” For more details visit: www.nationalmanufacturingweek.com.au

MAJOR AWARD FOR AUSTRALIAN PV ENGINEER Professor Stuart Wenham of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been awarded the prestigious Institute of Engineering and Technology’s A.F Harvey Engineering Research Prize. The prize, worth $A560,000, was announced in London last week. The A.F Harvey award recognises the discovery by Professor Wenham and his team of a mechanism to control the charge state of hydrogen atoms to correct deficiencies in silicon – the most costly part of a solar cell. As a result, poor quality silicon can be made to perform like high quality wafers. “Our patented advanced hydrogenation technology will allow lower-quality silicon to outperform solar cells made from better quality materials, producing higher efficiencies at significantly lower cost,” Professor Wenham told the Age newspaper. “Our UNSW team is now working with the world’s biggest solar manufacturers through collaborative agreements with NewSouth Innovations to commercialise this low-cost technology.” Six solar photovoltaic cell companies have already signed up as industry partners with UNSW, including China

Sunergy. This number is likely to double. To date, rooftop PVs are featured in approximately 1.6 million Australian homes, with installations roughly doubling over the past two years. During last week’s heatwave, solar PV contributed as much as 10 per cent of South Australia’s power needs, as well as three per cent of Victoria’s. Some consumers were paying up to 50 cents per kilowatt-hour during the heatwave, Professor Wenham told the Age. “PV can generate electricity at basically half that.” Presently, the best commercial solar cells convert between 17 to 19 per cent of the sun's energy into electricity. UNSW's technology will produce efficiencies of between 21 per cent and 23 per cent. Professor Wenham, who acknowledged the Australian Renewable Energy Agency's funding support for the project, will deliver a special IET lecture in London on May 21 to commemorate his award. The lecture will be streamed live.

3D MAPPING A 'PISA' CAKE FOR AUSSIE SCIENTISTS Australian researchers create first ever interior 3D map of Italy’s iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa using breakthrough mobile laser mapping system

Display of final Zebedee 3D map of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

The CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, has developed a ground breaking handheld 3D mapping system that can scan an environment as an operator walks through it. The system, using Zebedee technology, incorporates a laser scanner that sways on a spring to capture millions of detailed measurements of a site. Specialised software then converts the system's laser data into a detailed 3D map. The scientists recently used the technology to create the first ever 3D map of Italy’s iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Tower's cramped stairs and complex architecture have prevented previous mapping technologies from capturing its interior. But using Zebedee researchers have finally been able to create the first comprehensive 3D map of the entire building. "This technology is ideal for cultural heritage mapping, which is usually very time consuming and labour intensive, said Dr Jonathan Roberts, Research Program Leader at CSIRO’s Computational Informatics Division. “It can often take a whole research team a number of days or

14

industryupdate.com.au

weeks to map a site with the accuracy and detail of what we can produce in a few hours, he said. "Within 20 minutes we were able to use Zebedee to complete an entire scan of the building’s interior. This allowed us to create a uniquely comprehensive and accurate 3D map of the tower's structure and composition, including small details in the stairs and stonework." During “Project Pisa,” CSIRO also collaborated with local Italian scientists from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA) a leading Italian research university, who believe the research will have significant impact on preserving the cultural heritage of the site. "Our detailed record of the Leaning Tower of Pisa may one day be critical in being able to reconstruct the site if it was to suffer catastrophic damage due to natural disasters such as a fire or an earthquake, said Franco Tecchia, Assistant Professor at the PERCRO - Perceptual Robotics lab. “Having a detailed 3D model of the world’s most significant cultural heritage sites could also be used to allow people who cannot physically visit these sites

to better understand and appreciate their history and architecture." In 2012, CSIRO through its Digital Productivity and Services Flagship worked with 3D Laser Mapping, a global developer of laser scanning solutions to commercialise the Zebedee research into the ZEB1 product. As well as its applications in cultural heritage, ZEB1 is also being used to increase efficiencies and improve productivity in a number of different industries. For example, the technology is already assisting mining companies to better manage their operations and helping security forces to quickly scan crime scenes. CSIRO's Zebedee research was recently awarded a 2013 Eureka Prize, often referred to as an “Australian Oscar of Science,” for Innovative Use of Technology. The Australian national science agency's breakthrough 3D mapping system was also recently recognised as the winner of the Research and Development category at the iAwards, Australia's premier ICT awards program. www.csiro.au

3D MAPPING ON THE GO Producing reliable 3D maps of unknown environments can be a useful tool for many applications from street mapping, real estate and mining surveys to searching disaster sites or recording the exact details of a crime scene. But creating these 3D laser maps quickly, reliably and in any environment is currently a major challenge for business and industry. Current mapping solutions require expensive laser scanners and skilled engineers to survey the environment and some won’t work accurately in areas with poor GPS signal. For a multi-storey building this might also mean waiting days or weeks for maps to be collected, processed and made available for download. Now UK start-up GeoSLAM will offer the world's first mobile handheld laser mapping system together with a cloud-based 3D mapping service to the international market. The unit, which uses Zebedee technology, consists of a lightweight laser scanner and inertial measurement unit. Users can generate a 3D map simply by walking through a desired location. The laser scanner rocks back and forward on a spring scanning the environment, while a battery pack and laptop for recording the 3D map data and uploading it to the web is stored in an easy to carry backpack. Zebedee has advantages over traditional systems: • Rapid Scanning of Large Areas – scan at walking speed • Portable – the scanner goes wherever you go • Long Lasting – data capture all day long • Versatile - ideal in areas with no GPS • Cost Effective - no need for expensive software or high-end computers • Simple to use – only basic training required to operate • Automatic Data Processing – no processing staff required • Lightweight – less than 700g The Zebedee system has the potential to reach users all over the world giving anyone the ability to

MOBILE MAPPER WINS TOP SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARDS CSIRO, the developers of ZEB1, the world’s first, truly mobile, handheld, rapid laser mapping system have been awarded the Eureka Prize for the Innovative use of Technology as well as the iAwards prize for Research and Development. The Eureka Prize, often referred to as the “Oscars of Science” is given to the top scientists in Australia each year. "Our technology enables a suite of 3D mapping applications to be developed in wide ranging areas including education, cultural heritage, security, environment, property, emergency services and safety," said Dr Ian Oppermann, Director of the Digital

awards program, focused on recognising the contributions made by the ICT industry to both the national and global economies. Winners of 2013 iAwards now have the opportunity to compete with businesses from across the region at the 2013 Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards. “Mobile mapping is a technology in great demand, but difficult to perform indoors,” said Frank Howarth the Director of the Australian Museum. “The team behind ZEB1 unique solution is to take those challenges and turn them into opportunities. Their quick and easy scanning solution is a revolution for bio-physical measurement of cultural heritage sites and tracking of environmental changes – no other technology comes close.” iAwards Chair Russell Yardley said: “It is rewarding to see the far reaching impact which the use of innovative technology has on our economy. ICT (such as ZEB1) can lead to improvements in productivity and can also have a tangible impact on society in areas such as education, mining and the environment.”

Productivity and Services Flagship. The partnership between CSIRO and 3D Laser Mapping will see the commercial market of the Zebedee system where users can utilise 3D Laser Mapping’s data processing facilities, cloud-based mapping service, sophisticated software solutions and dedicated support staff.

ZEB1 uses robotic technology called Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM). The ZEB1 system includes a lightweight laser scanner mounted on a simple spring mechanism, which continuously scans as the operator walks through the environment. As the scanner loosely oscillates about a spring it produces a rotation that converts 2D laser measurements into 3D fields of view. Its ability to self-localise makes ZEB1 ideally suited for use indoors, underground and in other covered environments where traditional solutions that utilise GPS don’t function well. “This is a huge achievement for ZEB1 and the development team,” said Dr Graham Hunter, founder and Executive Chairman of 3D Laser Mapping the company who have commercialised the technology and launched it to market. “It clearly demonstrates just how advanced the system is and recognises the impact it is already having on the mapping and surveying industries,” Dr Hunter said.

GERMAN MANUFACTURING AT ITS BEST

WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY, PILZ LEADS THE WAY

In tough economic times, the need for increased productivity in manufacturing is vital. In today’s business climate, manufacturing companies need to be more efficient and productive in order to survive. Pilz, a global leader in automation technology, has remained at the top of its game through innovation and sustainable manufacturing practices. The German based company is a strong advocate for Mittelstadt manufacturing processes (similar to lean practices). In this exclusive interview with Industry Update, Klaus Stark, Pilz’s global head of operations explains the main reasons for the company’s outstanding success and how Australian companies can learn from their experience …

Pilz is a leading, innovative automation technology company with a strong focus on workplace safety. Established some 65 years ago, the company provides one-stop solutions for both safe and standard automation. This includes ground-breaking products in the area of sensor, control and drive technology. The company’s innovative products have been a key to its great success, says Klaus Stark, global head of operations. Stark, who visited Australia late last year to inspect the local operation, says innovation and safety make Pilz stand out from its competitors. “What we are selling is safety, says Stark. “That knowledge has helped companies throughout the world to benefit from our experience.” Another reason for the company’s great success has been its customer service, Stark says. “We are a family-owned company and that means a more personal service. “Because we don’t have shareholders the family and management make its own decisions. “We choose which products will best suit our clients. “And much of the profits our reinvested back into the company for the benefit of our customers.” Stark says the company has always

16

industryupdate.com.au

adopted “mid-range” strategies over 5-10 years and is constantly rolling out new products. “We don’t go for the ‘quick buck’ he says. “We want to have a sustainable business and build long-term relationships.” Pilz was originally founded as a glass-blowing business by Hermann Pilz in Esslingen, Germany in 1948. Early products included glass apparatus for medical technology and mercury relays for industrial applications. In the 1960s control passed to Hermann's son Peter, who developed the company into a supplier of electronic control and monitoring devices and programmable logic controllers. In 1987 the company launched safety relay PNOZ, an emergency stop system. PSS control systems were developed in the 1990s. Other Pilz products and services include sensor technology, bus and industrial wireless systems, risk assessments and training courses on machinery safety. Renate Pilz has been Managing Partner of the company since 1994. In addition to the head office in Germany (now in Ostfildern), Pilz is represented by 26 subsidiaries and branch offices on all continents. From its humble beginnings, the

company now employs some 1800 staff worldwide. Pilz is a stereotypical Mittelstadt company. Mittelstadt manufacturing practices are renowned for quality, efficiency, sustainability and productivity. “German engineering has a proud history of safety and quality, says Stark. “We have defined global standards , he says. “Mittelstadt is typical of Germany and typical of Pilz.” Stark says Australian manufacturers can benefit by adopting similar methods. For many years all Pilz products were designed and manufactured in Europe – mostly in Germany. Now the company is spreading its wings into other areas. All design is carried out in Germany, Switzerland and Ireland. And products are largely manufactured in Germany, Switzerland and Prague. About 12 months ago the company broke new ground with the opening of a new manufacturing facility in China. “This will be to service the rapidly expanding Asian market,” explains Stark. It is unlikely any of the products produced in China will be sold into other global markets. “Asian products will be produced for the Asian market and European products will be produced for the European market.” Stark says Pilz has always placed great emphasis on research and development (R&D) and that trend will continue. “All R&D is done at our headquarters in Germany as well as Switzerland and Ireland, he says. In Australia, Pilz runs a highly successful operation at its headquarters at Clayton, Victoria. “One of the keys to success in Australia has been in using local people who have a deep understanding of the local market and who have been able to communicate our safety message.” Stark says the cost of manufacturing

goods in Australia is comparable to Germany. But a much smaller local market, remote location and long distances to transport goods means it can be less cost effective to produce goods. Unlike in Europe, Pilz in Australia has a much stronger focus on the mining sector. “In Australia you cannot just be focused on tooling machines,” he says. How do you see the future of manufacturing globally? “It’s becoming harder and harder for all companies to compete. The only difference now is that transportation is much cheaper. “I am worried that manufacturing in some western countries may struggle to survive in the future.” Australia, says Stark, is well-placed to take advantage of the Asian boom in coming years. “And you have many good engineers – so your future looks bright.” Stark is impressed with Australia’s current safety standards, buts says a national approach to safety would be more effective. “Australia closely follows global safety standards, which is the right approach.”

NEW HIGH SPEED FOLDING DOORS FROM DMF Under their licensed agency with the highly recognised German company, Efaflex GmbH, Australian company DMF International, can now offer as part of their extensive range, the High Speed Folding door. With the ability to accommodate openings up to 6m high an 8m wide, and exposed to high wind, this door can suit a large variety of applications. It is primarily designed for exterior openings, and offers high security, as well as good heat and noise insulation. Energy savings increase due to a rapid action of the door panels, with speeds of up to 2m/sec. And, as an advantage over the high speed roll door, the door panels may be profiled around gantry cranes passing through the opening. These doors can operate electrically or pneumatically, and can be activated by various forms including pushbuttons, remote control, induction loops, or motion sensors to name a few.

A closed circuit electric contact strip will prevent the door closing onto an object within the opening, and this can be further improved by motion radars if required. The quiet and compact, low maintenance construction, guarantees a long service life for this high speed door, designed for over 150,000 cycles per year. These doors have been installed in applications to provide solutions for emergency services, train halls, motor vehicle manufacturing. DMF has proudly installed these doors into emergency service facilities within Australia, providing a much faster door operation than the previously used fold up counterweight doors. This increased speed of opening results in a faster response time for our crucial emergency teams, where every second counts. Efaflex are a German manufacturer, leading the way globally with their design and technology of high speed roll doors.

DMF, who also manufacture their own high speed roll doors in Australia, have been the appointed agent for 5 years. They can provide design, installation and service throughout Australia.

• Safety focus: Personal Protection Equipment

HOW SAFE ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES ON THE JOB? SAI Global, a leading standards certifier, is urging employers to evaluate the effectiveness of personal protective equipment for their employees. The recommendation comes at a time when many suppliers and retailers continue to offer personal protective equipment (PPE) that fails to meet rigorous Australian safety standards. Employers that offer workers PPE that has not been independently certified may be exposing employees and others to significant illness or injury, SAI Global warns. Many employers presume all safety products such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirator masks, hearing protectors, fall arrestors and safety footwear meet mandatory requirements. But SAI Global, the company behind the well-known Five Ticks StandardsMark certification, says this is not always the case. Richard Donarski, Team Leader Health and Safety, Product Services at SAI Global, says that despite there being various Australian Standards (sometimes optional) for safety equipment, some manufacturers and suppliers may not comply with them. Others may be ignorant of them – particularly when a product is developed overseas. “It’s a common misconception that all personal safety items are subject to and must meet mandatory standards,” Donarski says. “The reality is, as many standards aren’t legislated, manufacturers choose not to apply standards to their processes. The consequence is that the very products designed to keep us

26

industryupdate.com.au

safe may not necessarily do their jobs as expected. This is why it’s essential for employers, safety supervisors and managers to look for an approved symbol from a reputable certifier, like the “Five Ticks”, when buying these essential items.” Manufacturers who choose to have their safety products independently certified against Australian Standards are more likely to have a sound understanding of the hazards their products are designed to protect against. This is because the manufacturing processes and end products will have been independently tested against safety criteria set by the relevant Australian Standards. “By introducing personal protective equipment that has not been independently certified into the workplace, organisations may be exposing employees and others to significant illness or injury,” says Donarski. Research shows that around 130,000 Australians per year make serious workers’ compensation claims due to work related illness or injury, estimated to cost employers around $60.6 billion collectively. “Toxic poisoning through inhalation or skin contact, fragments in the eye, cuts and amputations, skull fractures and even loss of hearing can all be a result of incidents that occur while using uncertified personal protection equipment, Donarski says. “A cheap pair of safety glasses may look okay, but are unlikely to withstand the pressure of a fragment of steel that may hurtle through the air at speed. Similarly, a respirator mask may not act as an efficient barrier

to any hazardous chemicals or materials you’re working with.” As Australia’s leading product certification body, SAI Global works with manufacturers nationally and internationally to ensure employees use equipment and products that comply with Australian and international quality and safety standards. SAI Global’s Five Ticks StandardsMark is the most recognised certification mark for personal protective equipment. It is applied to many thousands of products each year. The Five Ticks StandardsMark logo can provide assurance to consumers that the product has met safety and other relevant criteria set by Australian Standards.

products that claim to be certified are to an Australian standard. To be safe, look out for the Five Ticks ‘Certified Product’ StandardsMark or enter the Certification Licence number online at http://register. saiglobal.com/ to source further details.

Five need-to-know steps when choosing personal protective equipment SAI Global offers five tips to assist employers when choosing personal protective equipment in the workplace:

4. Double check all sizes A hard hat or safety harness that’s a millimetre too small can be life threatening should an incident occur. Check all sizes with employees before placing orders for products and, once they arrive, test that these fit accordingly. Manufacturers can work to different sizes, so testing the product on an individual isessential to ensuring it fits appropriately.

1. Ask an expert While all equipment looks the same, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it does the job. For example, a particular respirator mask may only be compatible with certain chemicals or materials. When unsure, ask the supplier and provide them with the exact details of what the equipment will be used for. If ordering online then call or submit an enquiry. Don’t take a gamble with your employees, especially when working with dangerous equipment or chemicals. 2.

P urchase certified safety equipment only This equipment will be branded with an appropriate certification mark, the Australian Standard reference, and should include the name of the organisation, the date it was certified and a Certification Licence number. Be aware that not all

3.

e careful when buying B second hand Do you really know what that piece of equipment has been through? For example, a hard hat may look okay, but if it’s been left out in the sun every day, the chances are that its protection is nowhere near the level it should be due to strong UV rays, weakening its shell. Additionally, second hand DIY equipment may come with zero instructions.

5.

enew and evaluate equipment R regularly Setting a calendar reminder to evaluate and renew equipment every few months isn’t enough. Some tasks are larger than others and, if an employee has been working on an intense job, then their protective gear may become ineffective at a quicker rate due to wear and tear. Donarski recommends evaluating equipment before every job rather than per calendar month. For more information on product certification visit: www.saiglobal.com/ assurance

FREIGHTER WINS SAFETY AWARD FOR TRAILER DESIGN Trailer brand Freighter has won an award for safety initiative at the annual Steel Transport Safety Network Awards in Sydney. The Safety Improvement Initiative Award was presented to Freighter for modifications it made to the standard design of its extendable semi-trailer. Instead of the usual bare main rails between deck sections when the trailer is extended, Freighter engineered a walkway which folds out around the main rails as the trailer extends. This provides drivers and staff with

a safe walkway between the front and rear sections of the extended trailer, thus eliminating the risk of falling between the gaps in the main rails. Technical Manager, Greg Brown accepted the award on behalf of the Company. “We engineered this trailer based on a request from our customer OneSteel, who wanted to improve their driver safety when working in and around extendable trailers – which is commendable in itself,” Mr Brown said. “At OneSteel’s request, we have designed an extendable trailer with a walkway which folds out to be 1.7m wide between the two main decks of the trailer. This means that workers can safely walk between decks without risk of falling.” OneSteel National Transport Safety Manager Paul Driver said the trailer has been well received and the innovative Freighter design would now be specified as standard for all future new extendable semi-trailers. SAFETY: FOCUS ON FOOTWEAR •

OLIVER GETS TOUGH ON SAFETY Oliver Footwear has “re-invented” the elastic sided boot with the launch of the AT 55-222. These new boots incorporate all the traditional Oliver features of comfort, durability and safety protection. The AT 55-222 is a welcome addition to Oliver’s all terrain series. OIiver provides the most comprehensive range of safety and industrial footwear choices across virtually all wearer and working environments in Australia. The AT 55-222 is an elastic sided boot that has a wheat coloured, water resistant, Nubuck leather upper with the added feature of a TECtuff rubberised toe bumper to safeguard against premature wear caused by scuffing. The comfort features of the boot begin from the sole. Two layers of a dual density nitrile rubber – a softer midsole and a high density hardwearing outsole – cushion the foot and help to reduce foot, leg and lower back fatigue.

Oliver Footwear’s unique COMFORTcushion uses a combination of cellular urethane and PORON to protect the heel and ball of the foot. And the NANOlite foot bed provides exceptional underfoot comfort, cushioning and support. The gently raised surface of the NANOlite foot bed also massages the foot when walking to promote greater blood flow and further reduce fatigue. The dual density sole is heat resistant to 300°C of surface contact, resistant to mineral and organic oils and acids and also affords excellent slip resistance. Like the other footwear styles in the Oliver AT 55 Range, the new AT 55-222 has a NATUREform Type 1 Steel Toe Cap with a wide profile shape to suit your foot and prevent contact between toes and the toe cap. Heavy duty Kevlar stitching across all critical seams provides increased strength and adds to the durability of the AT 55-222.

Comfort and durability … new AT 55-222 elastic sided boot

The new boot also complies with the Australian and New Zealand Standards AS/NZS 2210.3:2009 and the International equivalents EN ISO 20345:2011 and ASTM F2413-11. Size choices are from 4-14 with half size increments from 61/2 to 101/2.

or territory. After taking a fall with the impact of the global financial crisis in 2008, manufacturing production staged a recovery in 2009-10 and has continued to strengthen and grow. From 2012-2013 the manufacturing industry employed close to 100,000 people nationwide and contributed approximately $105 billion to the economy. In the City of Darwin, manufacturing has the highest percentage of total imports and follows closely behind the mining industry for the total amount of exports. Machinery and equipment mark the highest export trade in the Northern Territory, giving good reason for the focus on safety procedures in the workplace. Some of Australia’s best known and respected companies will be exhibiting their products and services for guests and fellow industry professionals. Key to the manufacturing market – Arbon Equipment and Materials Handling are among the leading presenters. Arbon Equipment is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rite-Hite, the recognised world leader in Loading Dock, Door and Aftermarket Safety Systems. Headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA, Rite- Hite is a world-wide leader in the development, manufacture and sale of loading dock safety systems and industrial door solutions. Exhibiting in Darwin 2014, Arbon will present a range of brochures and giveaways with emphasis on loading docks, large fans, high speed doors and barrier systems. Among a range of manual handling devices to have their customers “working with ease”, Materials Handling Pty Ltd will be displaying its innovative A-Safe Polymer Safety Barriers, manufactured

from Memaplex. These barriers provide safety in the workplace, thanks to their built-in memory and ability to revert back to their original shape upon impact.

‘Some of Australia’s best known and respected companies will exhibit their products and services’ A series of free seminars will also be held giving attendees an opportunity to learn directly from leaders and experts from various safety-related fields. One of the must-see presentations uncovers the benefits and risks associated with implementing safety management software. myosh Managing Director, Adrian Manessis, will lead the seminar, offering a breakdown of what safety management software is, and how it can best be utilised within an organisation. “Keeping Peoples’ Minds on the Job” to ensure injury-free activity is a particularly hot topic of discussion and will headline a seminar given by Cristian Sylvestre, Managing Director of SafeStart. The presentation will address the importance “self” plays in injuries and offers audiences a different perspective on incident causation. Health by Design Director, Greg McLoughlin, will head up the “Workplace Safety: Culture, Commonsense and Consequences” seminar with a team of industry experts who will bring their legal, procedural and insurance knowledge to the table.

Dr Matt Brearley, Occupational Physiologist and Director of Thermal Hyperformance will present “Maximising Health, Safety and Performance in the Heat,” a seminar which tackles the Northern Territory’s tropical climate, now and into the future. Audiences will gain some insights into practical methods for monitoring staff in the field, hydration and heat storage as two discrete issues, implementation of practical cooling strategies and staff retention through heat stress mitigation. Exclusive to Safety in Action Darwin, Safe Work Australia will host a one-off free training session on the popular subject: The Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. This exclusive session will provide attendees with all they need to know about the new labelling classification of chemicals. Safety in Action Darwin is part of a series of national safety shows hosted by Informa Exhibitions Australia. One major three-day show will run in September each year, alternating between Sydney and Melbourne. Shows in Perth and Brisbane will be held in June and April across alternating years. Henkel’s Loctite brand will expand its health and safety range in mid-October with three innovative new anaerobic products. This includes the retaining adhesive Loctite 6300 for cylindrical assemblies, gasketing product Loctite 5800 and the thread sealant Loctite 5400. All these products underscore Henkel’s leading role in combining technology with sustainability. The company is the only one to offer a complete portfolio of non-hazardous anaerobic adhesives. Henkel introduced its first two anaerobics with a “white” material safety data sheet in 2009 – the threadlockers Loctite 2400 and Loctite 2700. The three newly developed Loctite products also contain no hazardous

ingredients. This means that according to the tough regulations of (EC) No. 1907/2006 – ISO 11014-1, they do not have to be labeled with any hazard symbols, risk or safety phrases. Nor do they contain any declarable CMRs (carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive toxins). The new expanded Loctite range offers customers an even greater choice of innovative health and safety solutions. With every new product Henkel has a strong focus on sustainability. “When developing products for the industrial adhesives segment, our main focus in this area is health and safety at work,” explains Grita Berendt, product manager for Loctite brand anaerobic adhesives and sealants. “Because for us at Henkel, first-class product performance also includes responsibility for the health

STOREMASTA HAVE YOUR

Every year noise costs Australian industry millions of dollars in employee stress and downtime. Also, many businesses face costly legal claims and litigation for failing to comply with government legislation regarding hearing protection for workers. Noise not only can damage hearing, it creates danger if workers are unable to communicate or hear machinery or warning signals. It is paramount for employers to protect their workers from harmful workplace noise. A person without hearing protectors can be safely exposed to 85dB of noise for eight hours (similar to the sound of a front-end loader). But by increasing noise levels by a mere 3dB (85 to 88dB), it cuts that time to only four hours. And by increasing it again by a further 3dB (eg a lawn mower), an unprotected worker is at risk of hearing damage after just two hours. Flexshield is a leading manufacturer, supplier and installer of noise control and soundproofing products. This includes: • Flexible acoustic curtains and machine enclosures

Greater flexibility … HyFlex 11-818 gloves

straddle seats

seating systems

foot activated gas spring

TAKE THE PAIN OUT OF WORK WITH FLEXLINER STRADDLE SEATS Straddle seats are designed to reduce back, shoulder and leg fatigue when seated. Available from seating specialists Flexliner, these seats provide comfort and ease of movement when working at a bench or counter. When properly setup, a straddle seat achieves this by tilting the pelvis forward, making the curves in the spine conform to the body’s correct anatomical position – an “S” shaped spine. This helps to prevent a forward hunching “C” shaped spine that can happen when seated on a traditional chair. This upright posture straightens the upper back and reduces muscle tension in the neck, shoulder girdle and upper back. It’s important to know that when using a straddle seat at a desk, the desktop must be raised. Straddle users sit 20–30cm higher than on a standard desk chair. This creates an angle of 125o-140o between the thigh and torso (versus a 90o hip angle when using a traditional chair).

The straddle seat set-up activates the postural muscles – including the abdominals, back extensors, buttocks and large muscles in the legs, as opposed to a traditional chair where the postural muscles are dormant. HOW TO BETTER MANAGE YOUR APPRENTICES Colin McCabe general manager for MEGT Recruitment and Management Services offers employers the following tips on how to attract and maintain apprentices …

Those employers that have been in business for 10 or more years are far more likely to retain their apprentices and get them through to completion. Those employers who have been in business for less than five years are more likely to achieve low retention rates. Why? Experience as a boss with apprentices matters. The reality is that the more experience they have had and the more positive it has been, the more likely they are to keep getting good results. They learn from their mistakes and listen to advice. But whereas over 95 percent of interviewed employers rate themselves as a good boss, unfortunately apprentices don’t agree. Less than 75 percent say they have a good boss and in some groups this is as low as 49 percent. Current apprentices don’t respond well to employers who say ‘I learned that way so that’s how you’ll learn’. In some cases, it seems to lead to bad work practices and it doesn’t fit with GenY notions of contemporary employment. However, personal experience as an apprentice – the boss who started out as an apprentice himself – can be both a positive and negative influence. Some of those who trained as an apprentice retain the lowest number of apprentices; in fact those employers who report low retention rates with apprentices are most likely to say that’s how they got their start and to think of themselves as a good boss.

Attitude as a boss also matters The attitude of the employer can greatly contribute to the cause of apprentices not completing. GenY apprentices are quick to pick up the clues from their employers; they feel that they are already sacrificing wages in exchange for training and respond negatively to employers who harp on about profitability and costly mistakes. The time you spend mentoring matters Eighty percent of apprentice bosses not only run the business but also look after the apprentice’s pay and conditions. That puts enormous time pressures on employers who want to help their apprentice complete their qualification, but who feel they just can’t find the time to mentor. That can put an apprentice in a difficult position if they want to talk to someone about a work problem, a pay rise or their working conditions. However, the employers with good retention rates, even if they are in small businesses, tend to have someone looking after or helping out with HR matters. Successful employers also take the apprenticeship relationship seriously and make sure that they are doing what they are supposed to do for the apprentice; they stick to the deal in practice as well as on paper. GenY doesn’t respond well to an old fashioned, authoritarian boss or hierarchical workplaces. Most want a mentor, someone who will be interested in them rather than bark out orders, someone they can talk to, someone who treats them fairly.

MORE OVERSEAS WORKERS NEEDED The Australian Industry Group has called for a 15 percent increase in Australia’s immigration intake to meet current and future skills shortages. The AiGroup wants immigration numbers increased from 190,000 this year to 220,000 for the 2014-15 financial year – with an emphasis on skilled workers. The proposal is contained in an AiGroup submission to the federal

36

industryupdate.com.au

government on the size of the immigration program to be set in the May Budget. Ai Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox said the proposed increase takes into account the proven benefits to the economy of a strong migration program. “An increase in migrant numbers supports positive growth in our population and especially in our adult workforce, which is important due to relatively low rates of

Not surprisingly, those employers who have a positive attitude to their apprentices, who appear to like and value them and are willing to listen to them, get the best results. Interestingly, some of the most traditional and authoritarian employers also get good results some of the time – their ability to retain an apprentice through to completion appears to be related to the match in personality and work style between the two; some young people are more able or willing to work with a tough boss than others. But research suggests that they are a minority. Learning from other employers matters The larger businesses, with the best track records, are most likely to say that they have been influenced by their industry body. But our research indicates low retention rate employers don’t take advice from anyone. The more successful employers have also established some guidelines for recruiting workers and apprentices and

natural population growth,” he said. Mr Willox said a higher skilled migration intake is appropriate because of: • Australia’s historically low (albeit growing) unemployment rates • The deepening impacts of our ageing workforce (with 9 percent of all Australian employees now aged 60 or over and 17 percent aged 55 or over) • Persistent skill shortages in key growth industries including mining services, engineering, infrastructure and health services. With a positive upturn in national housing market activity, the AiGroup

most importantly, take input or advice from others – partner, colleague, industry association – about recruiting, employing and managing apprentices. Matching the apprentice to the trade matters Not only are one in three apprentices likely to leave their apprenticeship in the first year, of the 55 percent that complete, some leave the trade immediately after they qualify. That means you’ve just wasted four years in getting them up to speed. Why did that happen? Feedback from MEGT’s apprentices is that they were dedicated to finishing and had a good work attitude. But they never did like that particular trade. Carrying out some type of testing to see if the job seeker is right for your trade, is clearly well worth doing. MEGT Recruitment and Management Services Ph: 1300 365 022 www.megt.com.au

expects the residential and commercial construction cycles to pick up significantly from 2014-15. This in turn will lead to further skilled trade shortages, which will be exacerbated by the flow of construction workers into the mining sector and reduced trades apprenticeship numbers in recent years. Mr Willox said skills shortages would be worse for occupations requiring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills. SAFETY TRAINING HIGH ON THE AGENDA IN 2014 Pilz, a leading supplier of safe automation and safety services, has signalled that safety is high on the agenda for manufacturing companies this year with an unprecedented demand for its training courses. In addition to its highly respected MachineSAFE training course, Pilz now offers the internationally recognised Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) course. Introduced to Australia in 2013, the four-day course is a collaboration between Pilz and TÜV NORD and has set new standards for certified training in the field of machinery safety. Fifty people attended the course in Australia last year with 80 per cent passing the examination and gaining the certification. One of those participants was Ben Johnson, Senior Mechatronics Engineer at Cochlear Ltd Australia, who highly recommends this course to anyone who works with industrial machinery in any capacity. "I completed the Certified Machine Safety Expert Course

(CMSE) in 2013 and found the course to be a comprehensive training suite in all facets of machine safety, he said. “It was clear from the outset that all of the trainers had immense experience in the field through the clarity and depth to which they could explain each of the topics and even quote lines from the standard without any reference!” Ben said one of the best aspects of the training was the many practical examples which were given in addition to the discussions within the group relating the content to current work. “Unlike many other courses I have completed I am actually using what I have learnt in my day to day work,” he said. During the course, Pilz trains delegates to the level of qualified machinery safety experts, who will then be in a position to apply their knowledge not just domestically but internationally. Divided into five modules with lectures, discussions and workshops, the course covers the key fundamentals of this field. This year, Pilz has updated its

popular MachineSAFE courses and these now include more international content as well as being structured so that the Advanced course now picks up from where Introduction course finishes. Pilz Managing Director, Scott Moffat, said training appears to be high on the agenda in 2014 with many bookings already received. “It’s very heartening to see companies investing in training. This can only lead to higher levels of safety,” said Mr Moffat. Four new CMSE courses will be held across Australasia in 2014 with the first courses taking place in March in Brisbane and Auckland. Courses in Melbourne and Sydney will follow in May. Places are filling fast so book now to avoid disappointment. Call 1300 723 334 or email: training@machinesafe.com.au MachineSAFE Introduction and Advanced courses are held throughout the year. For more information visit: www. machinesafe.com.au.

SEVAAN APPRENTICE RACES TO NEW HEIGHTS Multi-faceted contract engineer and fabricator Sevaan Group has always placed great emphasis on staff training. In fact the company believes it is established well enough to be a complete training centre for younger employees. Sevaan currently has six new apprentices among its staff including a trainee laser programmer covering disciplines including fitter and turner, sheet metal fabrication and welding. As well as investing in trainees, the company also invests in world-class machinery. And Sevaan aims to make as many staff as possible familiar with all technologies on its production floor. This, according to management, is a form of cross training – a level of shop floor knowledge insurance that keeps employees conversant with as many of its technologies as possible. One example is fitter machinist Mr Keiran Sproule. He is learning in all areas of the company’s machine department,

such as milling machines. Keiran, a keen Motocross racer in his spare time, has already started learning to program with CAD/CAM software and will also receive ongoing tuition about equipment maintenance and how the machine works. That way he, like all other production floor staff, can have an appreciation of how to keep the sophisticated machine performing accurately through routine maintenance. “CNC takes a lot of experience and practice before anyone can claim to be very good at it,” says Keiran. “Working with Ben Collins has been a very good thing for me as there is no substitute for extensive experience when it comes to using technical equipment that is driven by powerful software.” Ben Collins, the current Mori Seiki machining centre specialist began his working career with an apprenticeship served at one of the companies amalgamated under Sevaan Group before

taking up an offer from Mori Seiki where he learned this brand inside out. Now he has returned to the company under its current, modern structure and is considered one of the finest Mori Seiki machining centre experts in Australia. Under its current structure, Sevaan Group also has a paint and powder coating facility, a robotic welding bay, a 220 tonne state of the art bender and a newly commissioned grit blasting centre with in-built enviro waste sorter “I am surrounded by experienced managers, plus I have expert colleagues such as Ben who is an excellent help because the software that powers the technologies we use is very powerful and sometimes complex,” said Keiran. “But the biggest surprise in this role is how really challenges me to use my intelligence and analytical abilities. This suits me just fine because I am not the kind of person that just likes standing there wishing away the hours. “Apart from receiving an excellent

career path through this apprenticeship, an added advantage is the knowledge I get from operating the Mori Seiki equipment can be applied to my own hobby by way of fixing or making customised parts for my own motorbike passion.” www.sevaangroup.com.au

GET A HANDLE ON HYDRAULIC LEAKS

Top protection … Gates’ full-torque nut couplings

Leaking hydraulic couplings create headaches for industrial and mobile equipment manufacturers and users alike. Hydraulic leaks on new equipment mean costly rework or warranty claims. In the field, leaks pose environmental, safety and operational problems.

Hydraulic leaks can be slow, but insidious. The high cost of hydraulic leaks accumulate from the environmental, fluid, safety and liability, operational and capital costs associated with leaks. Leaking hydraulic fluid affects machine performance. If fluid leaks out, contaminants can get in. Contaminated fluids account for a high percentage of component failures. Failed components stop equipment from working and cost valuable production time. Another side effect of contamination is poor manufacturing quality. One of the most common causes of hydraulic leaks is coupling nuts or seats that crack from over-torquing. Any

threaded connection has the potential to leak if it is not torqued properly. Traditional staked-nut fittings have always been prone to this problem. That’s why Gates invented and patented the Full-Torque Nut design. It has a large, smooth shoulder that evenly distributes torquing forces for maximum torque tolerance. You virtually cannot over-torque this nut. It provides up to 2,210 bar (32,000 psi) burst pressure protection. And its TuffCoat plated, providing 500 hours of protection against red rust corrosion (nearly 600 percent more than the SAE standard). Full-Torque Nut couplings are stronger and more durable than traditional staked-nut fittings.

Gates Full-Torque Nut technology is now available on all Gates couplings, including the MegaCrimp line for wirebraid hoses, and the GlobalSpiral line for spiral-wire hoses. Increase productivity and equipment uptime, on the assembly line or in the field, by eliminating damaged couplings and unsightly leaks from too much torque. HOW TO STREAMLINE YOUR SUPPLY CHAIN Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) distribution centres face many difficult challenges when it comes to completing orders on time. This includes high volume, fluctuating quantities of goods, many of which are subject to regular promotion and strict use-by-dates. And with an economic climate that demands greater efficiencies at lower cost, the need for sophisticated storage and retrieval systems has never been greater. Many Australian FMCG brands are increasingly turning to automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRSs) to grapple with the complex requirements of their distribution centres. Storage and materials handling specialist, Dexion has worked with some of Australia’s biggest names, including Arnott’s and Kimberly-Clark to design and implement ASRS solutions as part of broader RDS (Real-time Distribution System) implementations to grapple with unique storage and retrieval challenges.

The Dexion RDS is a multi-functional, tailor-made system that controls the physical and operational aspects of a company’s distribution centre from receipt of goods through to despatch in real time. Dexion is able to configure flexible RDS solutions to fit any individual task, regardless of how simple or complex the application. By simultaneously managing and co-ordinating paperless technologies, inventory is regulated throughout the distribution centre. Benefits include: • Improved allocation of resources, which leads to improved productivity • Efficient use of capital investment (ROI is often achieved in under two years) • Smarter picking controls delivering improved order accuracy (also reducing returns) • Real time tracking and inventory reporting • Physical equipment automation • Staff and equipment performance monitoring

• Lower operating costs • In 2003, Dexion was engaged by Kellogg’s to revolutionise its unsustainable distribution centre, which despite accommodating 28,000 pallet positions across 27,000sqm, was almost entirely manually operated. Dexion devised a system that could automatically process high demand volumes whilst also achieving high storage density. This involved co-locating a new facility alongside the Kellogg’s manufacturing facility whilst maintaining the best storage density and maximising on volume throughput. Dexion developed a state-of-the-art solution that included pallet conveyors, robotics and IT hardware. The new distribution centre held 32,000 pallets within the automated storage and conventional components of the warehouse. The ASRS enables pallets to be stored in five crane automated aisles, each six-pallets-deep, which can put away up to 90 pallets and retrieve 120 pallets per hour.

The Dexion RDS Integrated Command & Control in operation at Kellogg’s

The results have been overwhelmingly positive – Kellogg’s has seen a 10 percent reduction in pick error rate with the new system and production damage reduced by 85 percent. Labour cost has also reduced, with only half the forklift requirements needed in the new facility. Dexion Ph: 1800 100 050 www.dexion.com.au

DESIGN COMPANY PROUDLY SUPPORTS AUSSIE MANUFACTURING Gillian Corban and Amanda Blair have been designing products for more than 20 years. The two designers opened a niche stationery business in 1988 offering handmade journals and albums for the corporate and retail sector. Corban & Blair has since built a reputation for style, innovation and quality combined with fast and friendly customer service. And despite strong competition locally and overseas, Corban & Blair have stayed ahead of the field by offering specialised designs. Last year the management of Corban & Blair faced a dilemma. The family-owned and run business they were using to manufacture in Australia had decided to close. New venture … Gillian Corban and Amanda Blair

They had the choice of manufacturing the products off-shore or finding another Australian manufacturer who could meet the challenge. “Imports from China don’t always meet out needs,” said managing director Gillian Corban. Orders vary from small to large runs to large runs, with specifically designed packaging with corporate logos, or presentation boxes. Some companies require custom made compendia for meetings that include a space for an iPad, or high end leather gifts for senior managers. Also, the turn-around time for incentive gifts can be as short as two weeks. Therefore it was vital to use a manufacturing base that is nearby. Finding a local manufacturer to turn

around small quantities of high-end products suitable for the top end of the market, has posed difficulties. While Corban & Blair source from China, experience has shown the process is not devoid of issues. Manufacturing unique products requires careful management and structured communication to get the desired finished goods.

‘Manufacturing off-shore doesn’t always let us meet our customer needs’ And timeframes can blow out, not just in terms of freighting delays, but having to “stand in line” or “wait our turn” behind bigger international players. Few Chinese manufacturers are enthusiastic about short runs or small orders. They prefer large quantities. “We are in the business of providing unique products to our customer specifications, and this always includes a timeframe. Manufacturing off-shore doesn’t always let us meet our customer needs, Gillian said. “We have survived for 25 years and I wasn’t about to let us lose a market sector because we didn’t have a reliable local manufacturer, here in Australia,” she said.

Gillian was also concerned about the redundancy of the manufacturing staff in Australia with skill and expertise. “We have at times struggled to find good manufacturers here, ones who can handle jobs as diverse as stitching, printing on cloth, binding or manufacturing genuine leather products.” The solution was to buy a manufacturing company. While this adds strain to the business in a weak growth period, Corban & Blair believe that driving success during a downturn will lead to greater future growth. As well as the challenges, the benefits of owning their own manufacturer affords the company greater control over production, added flexibility and the opportunity of improving the production processes with possible streamlining of costs, benefits that any Australian company would like to embrace. “We are an Australian business, and very proud to keep the words ‘Made in Australia’ on our product packaging,” says Ms Corban. “This is a new venture for us but it demonstrates the value of keeping manufacturing on Australian shores.”

Niche Adelaide manufacturer Maric Flow Control last year celebrated its 50th birthday with record sales and exports. While many small manufacturers struggle to get their products offshore, Maric is tapping into growing world demand for its hand-crafted water valve technology. From its idyllic creek setting in the Adelaide foothills, the family-owned business has become a highly specialised producer of control valves, which provide constant, pre-determined flow rates regardless of water pressure. Maric is a key supplier of various industries, particularly mining, water utilities, water treatment, pumping and irrigation. Aluminium producers in Australia and the US, including Alcoa World Alumina, are among the company’s biggest customers. Over the past three years Maric has recorded a 10 percent increase in exports, which now account for 40 percent of total sales. Overall turnover has surged 15 percent in the first four months of 2013-14. Director Grant Schroeder said recent investment in new production equipment is helping the business keep up with its expanding order book. But it is the company’s ability to tailor high quality, long-life valves to meet very specific customer requirements that is a key point of difference – and that’s achieved by hand. “The fact that we can deliver hundreds of different configurations involving different materials, body specifications, flow rates and pressure ranges is quite unusual in the

marketplace,” said Mr Schroeder. “It’s why we’re now regarded as a leading manufacturer and supplier of flow control valves internationally.” The original Maric flow control valve was developed by Mr Schroeder’s father Eric who established the business in 1963 manufacturing instantaneous electric water heaters for the domestic market. To improve the heater he needed a valve that could deliver a constant flow of water despite fluctuating water pressures. The only valve available was produced in the US and cost half the price of the heater – so he studied rubber chemistry and set about designing his own valve. Like all great inventions the solution was relatively simple – a precision-moulded rubber control ring that varies in diameter depending on the pressure. “The Maric Valve was born and because of its water saving capability my father soon realised it had other applications far beyond water heaters,” Mr Schroeder said. Grant Shroeder joined the business in 1987 and invested in machinery upgrades and more concerted marketing. “Eventually the valves became our major product and we’ve now reached the stage where we produce very few heaters. “New applications for the valves have prompted various adaptations to suit different environments and recently we patented a non-return feature for use in the mining sector.” The company is also using some of the latest high pressure rubber compounds, titanium and super duplex stainless steels so that the valves can be used in more aggressive industrial environments involving high temperatures and potentially corrosive water supply. Maric’s export markets include Europe, the UK, the US, South America, New Zealand, South Africa, the Middle East, China and Scandinavia. Maric Ph: 08 8431 2281 www.maric.com.au

TEN THINGS TO CONSIDER YOKOGAWA: A LEADER IN BEFORE JOINING A GYM HEALTH AND SAFETY Getting fit not only benefits you, but also your employer. But joining a gym can have plenty of pitfalls. The NSW Office of Fair Trading offers this advice before signing up to a gym membership: 1. Shop around Don’t be pressured into signing up on the spot. Visit a number of gyms to work out which is the best value for money, has the best facilities, service and location for you.

Yokogawa Australia has become one of only two industrial automation and control companies operating in Australia to achieve certification in the soon to be recognised international Occupational Health & Safety Management System standard, the OHSAS 18001:2007. The recognition follows several months’ development and implementation of updated health, safety and environment systems, developed in-house by Yokogawa. The Certificate of Approval was presented to Yokogawa Managing Director (Australia and New Zealand), John Hewitt, by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Limited (LRQA) representative, Rob Fornasari, in Sydney late last year. Also present to receive the certification was Yokogawa’s Health Safety and Environment Advisor, Anita Mac, who was the lead designer of Yokogawa Australia’s health and safety systems.

2. Be cautious of ‘great deals’ Be wary of special offers, promotions and verbal promises. Some deals may not be as good as they seem, once you read the fine print. 3. Read the fine print Never take the salesperson’s word for it. Always take the gym contract home and read all the terms and conditions before you sign it. 4. Check the cooling-off period Check if the contract has a cooling-off period, which allows you to cancel the membership in writing within a limited time period. 5. Where will you be in 6 to 12 months? The gym may not be easy to access if you change jobs, work different hours or move house and you may still be locked into the contract for months to come. Consider a three or six-month membership – they are often no more expensive than a 12-month one. 6. Pre-paid fees Fitness centres in NSW are not allowed to accept pre-paid fees in excess of 12 months so you shouldn’t be asked to pay for more than 12 months at a time. 7. Direct debit Many gyms ask for payments by direct debit. You often need to provide the gym with 30 days written notice to stop the direct debit deductions. Check the contract before you sign. If the fitness centre continues taking payments, talk to your financial institution. 8. Cancelling your membership If you need to cancel your membership, check your contract to see what is required. Even if the contract requires you to visit the centre to cancel in person, it is also wise to do it in writing. Then you

The OHSAS 18001:2007 and AS/ NZ 4801:2001certifications cover the entire gambit of Yokogawa’s local operations, from configuration, project management, engineering, testing, procurement, sales and marketing and service of process control instrumentation, control systems and monitoring equipment right through to warehousing, logistics and office environment. According to Mr Fornasari, the successful audit and LQRA certification underscored Yokogawa’s commitment to the safety of its people and their compatriots. This approach also mirrors the emphasis on safety and environment by Yokogawa’s customers in the oil and gas, minerals processing, energy and utilities sectors. LRQA has conducted audits at various Yokogawa offices in Australia to determine how Yokogawa has applied its OH&S Management System in light of the applicable standards including both the currently applicable Australian Standard AS/NZS 4801:2001 and the OHSAS 18001:2007 standard which is likely to become a new international standard. HYPERTENSION LINKED TO SHIFT WORK can prove the date you requested for the membership to end. 9. Fitness Australia Check if the gym is a member of Fitness Australia at www.fitness.org.au or call 1300 211 311. If it is a member it must comply with the NSW Fitness Code of Practice. 10. If things go wrong If you have a dispute with a gym, check if it is a member of Fitness Australia. If the gym is a member, Fitness Australia will help negotiate your dispute if you submit it to them in writing. If the gym is not a member of Fitness Australia or you cannot resolve the issue, call Fair Trading on 13 32 20 or visit www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au for help and advice.

A recent study has found that shift workers face a greater risk of developing hypertension – regardless of their weight. Japanese researchers studied 9209 daytime workers and 964 workers on a three-shift rotation from a manufacturing company. The study found 3386 cases of hypertension (high blood pressure) reported over a 28-year period. And the results showed shift workers were more likely to develop hypertension than daytime workers. Previous studies showed shift workers were “a population at high risk for developing obesity, and obesity is in turn a reported risk factor for hypertension.” This suggested the risk arose from weight gain caused by shift work, rather than shift work itself.

But the latest study showed the relative risk of hypertension was significantly elevated among shift workers without obesity. That means the actual shift work was a risk factor – regardless of body weight. The study also found that shift workers who reported having trouble falling asleep, waking up repeatedly and experiencing daytime sleepiness, were at an increased risk of developing hypertension. The results were published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

FLYING THROUGH THE AIR WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE When ResMed, a leading developer, manufacturer and distributor of medical equipment, recently ordered machine tools for its Sydney headquarters, it also booked a crane to deliver them. There’s usually nothing unusual about the delivery of new technology to a company in Australia’s large industrial infrastructure – but there was in this case. The company’s global headquarters and R&D facilities are on the first floor of the building. Therefore, it is not possible to install new machines by conventional methods. So, when the company ordered two more Fanuc Robodrills from 600 Machine Tools, it booked a crane too. The supplier, 600 Machine Tools, Australia’s largest machine tool distributor, says the scene was reminiscent of “those daring young men on their flying trapeze.” These extremely accurate machines are required for the production of medical equipment that is used principally for overcoming the effects of a commonplace sleeping disorder called Sleep Apnea, also known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The company’s Lab Section Leader, Paul Wilkie explained: “If you have OSA, it means your upper airway temporarily closes while you sleep, causing you to stop breathing. These periods when breathing stops (called Apnea) can last for at least 10 seconds, and may happen up to a hundred times a night. “This puts a strain on your body, raising blood-pressure and reducing your quality of sleep. These repeated Apneas reduce your oxygen levels, and this alerts your brain to wake the body to begin breathing again,” he said. ResMed is a global leader in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of innovative medical products for the treatment and management of respiratory disorders, with a focus on sleep-disordered breathing that have brought relief and a much higher quality of life to OSA sufferers in many countries. Accuracy is paramount The models of Fanuc Robodrill provided by 600 Machine Tools, part of the huge UK-based 600 Group, are capable of rapidly producing components of remarkable accuracy. This is an absolute necessity when, for example, reproducing the contours of a human face. The Japanese company, Fanuc, produces the bulk of the controllers for machine tools.

44

industryupdate.com.au

Most of the world’s best-known brands have a Fanuc control fitted as standard. The world-renowned Robodrill is always the first machine tool to have any newly-introduced Fanuc control, and current models now have the very latest and most sophisticated control ever produced by the company. The Robodrill D14LIAS supplied to ResMed has the very latest control. It includes “non-uniform rational basis spline” (NURBS), a mathematical model used in computer graphics for generating and representing curves and surfaces. It offers great flexibility and precision for handling analytic (surfaces defined by common mathematical formulae) and modelled shapes. Engineering manager in NSW for 600 Machine Tools, Steve Drummond, said: “The software accelerates the processing to enable high-speed machining. Additionally, tool changes are achieved in .2 of a second, the machining table moves at 54m per minute, and the Robodrill has a spindle-speed of 24,000 rpm.” Elimination of polishing Speed is complemented by extreme accuracy. For example, components can be produced at virtually “nett finished shape” – there is no need to do polishing – a valuable time-saving in a busy workshop. To enable the manufacture of complex shapes to high specifications, the standard Robodrill has three axes of movement. The machine acquired by ResMed also

has a trunnion table that provides a fourth and fifth axis. The 4th axis allows spiral interpolation, while the fifth axis allows production of complex radius curves. The second Robodrill is a space-saving 3-axis unit – it will fit through a standard house doorway – and has many of the features of its big brother. It is to be used mainly for development work and prototyping. Speed and accuracy “The two new Robodrills will add to our capacity, increasing productivity while enhancing ResMed’s global reputation for high quality medical products, said Mr Wilkie. “The installation of the two machines went smoothly, and four of our highly-skilled operators participated in the commissioning process. There was little disruption to our workflow, and the new machines are already helping our workshop team to achieve faster set-ups, increase output, and meet tight delivery schedules.”

The managing director of 600 Machine Tools in Australia, Cliff Purser, said: “Although I have been in the machine tool business for more than 30 years, I must confess to being surprised at the quality of finish that can be achieved with the combination of the Robodrill D14L and the very latest Fanuc control. “Every workshop manager in Australia is acutely aware that time is money, and the family of Robodrill models, hitched to a ‘Star Wars’ controller, holds out the prospect of faster throughput without any sacrifice of accuracy, and significantly better quality of finish – perhaps eliminating further processing steps, such as polishing. “All things considered, this is a combination that could mark a watershed point in the development of economic precision-engineering in Australia.” 600 Machine Tools Ph: 02 9674 4738 www.600machinery.com.au

AMADA IS BENDING ALL THE RULES Sevaan Group’s latest addition to its technology base, a 220 tonne Amada bender, has opened new opportunities for the industrial sector. The Amada is ideal for high tolerance bending of plate steel ranging in thickness from 1-25mm. It can be used in basically any industry that uses metal including mining, rail, agriculture, general engineering, defence, sheet metal, public works, and the energy sector. The 220t bender adds to Sevaan’s drive to include as many skills sets and fabrication services in-house. Sevaan Group CEO Tony Panrucker believes having as many services in-house is crucial to reducing costs and reducing downtime. “Whether it is for new items or manufactured components for replacement purposes, we take extra steps out of the equation as everything is done here,” said Mr Panrucker

“Our Amada 220t bender is highly automated, accurate and fast and allows us the advantage of taking on jobs for production runs or once-off orders. “The machine can be programmed in the office – therefore it can be programmed offline. “That means a lower cost in set-up, elimination of trial and error, and ultimately a reduction of costs for our clients. “There is no need to make extra units for each job – there are no trial pieces that go to waste which means a win-win for both us and our clients and an overall saving in time and money. “There are not many companies in Sydney with a 220 tonne bender at their disposal, and not many would have the accuracy of our Amada. “When clients specify a ±3mm tolerance we have no trouble easily outdoing this and delivering ±0.5 even in the thickest plate or even closer tolerances on the thin material.”

FIXTURING TABLES WITH ACCURACY AND INTEGRITY

WITH GENOX YOUR WASTE WILL BE SHREDDED BUT YOUR BANK BALANCE WON’T BE. NOW THAT’S APPLIED THINKING.

Accuracy and surface integrity is the key asset which has seen Leussink’s Demmeler fixturing tables gain increased market share over lesstechnical, cheaper imitations. In particular, where large work pieces are involved, only high levels of edge accuracy can provide tight tolerances across multiple tables that are joined together. They have quickly seen uptake in many fabrication plants serving most industries including construction, mining, public works, agriculture, energy and offshore as well as foundries and general factories. Without this respect for tolerances, according to Director Jason Leussink, there is likely to be a gap between two edges of joined tables when they are butted up against each other. “This will create a production slowdown and risk accuracy of the finished job piece and this is the biggest reason why any fixturing table, whether entry level or top shelf, should be highly accurate,” said Mr Leussink. “Durability is also a key element as any investment of this type is viewed as a capital equipment asset and it must perform under heavy duty cycles and very hot processes such as welding.” One industry standard attained by

Leussink’s demmeler tables is hardness of body. Seeing that the majority of alternatives to old fashioned flat bed tables are made of treated steel that is a little too brittle for long term use, Leussink’s demmeler range is treated specifically to provide a level of softness that minimises potential for chips, grooves and scratches. Leussink’s Demmeler tables are also supplied with a specially sprayed working surface and edges to prevent weld spatter from sticking to it. In the very rare case weld spatter does stick, it is simple to remove by rubbing back the surface with a honing stone, therefore longer table integrity for years. Even the demmeler clamping systems are supplied with a 5mm wall thickness, as opposed to 2mm thickness, which is common across the industry. In addition, there is a patented bolter. Leussink’s demmeler table bolts are engineered to totally minimise damage to the table, as its industry analysis saw other equipment often uses bolting systems that damage the table or the holes in the table. WORKPLACE HYGIENE MOVES UP A GEAR Hygienic Design Gearboxes from Treotham Automation meet the most stringent requirements of the food and pharmaceutical packaging industries. The gearboxes are designed and certified according to EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) rules to ensure optimal material resistance and cleanliness. Hygienic Design Gearboxes feature coaxial, dynamic planetary gearheads and are available in several different performance classes. They have been designed to provide robustness, material resistance and cleanliness – the three key elements when determining the housing design, choice of materials and processing techniques for any hygienic gearboxes. The gearbox housing is also completely free of edges, dead spaces and gaps that could provide a breeding ground for bacteria or microorganisms or act as dirt traps. Just like its adapter plate, the gearbox

housing is manufactured from stainless steel 1.4404/AISI 316L – a low carbon steel that is approved by the US FDA (United States Food & Drug Administration) for food contact that offers high resistance to cleaning and washdown fluids such as disinfectants containing hypochlorite or chlorinated alkaline foam cleaners. All stainless steel surfaces of the Hygienic Design Gearboxes are electro-polished with a roughness of either 0.8 µm Ra, as stipulated for food processing applications or 0.4 µm Ra, which is the accepted standard for the pharmaceutical industry. ” Treotham Automation Ph: 9907 1778 www.treotham.com.au

LOOKING FOR A JOINT VENTURE PARTNER? Progressive engineering firm Sevaan Group is seeking potential business partners – particularly with owners who are seriously considering retirement. Sevaan Group’s business model sets up a joint venture arrangement where Sevaan Group executives draw the new business within its own supply chain. This effectively raises capacities for both entities and thus increases business. According to the Group’s CEO, Mr Tony Panrucker, Sevaan specialises in winwin acquisitions and is always looking for new opportunities. “Sevaan is particularly successful in taking new products to market fruition as we have a ready made multifunction business at our disposal, he says. “There must be lots of people out there that may feel tired or out of ideas and they want some way to get out sensibly or continue on with renewed energies, fresh prospects and a new belief but have until now felt stuck there.”

Sevaan Group, which itself was formed by the merger of longstanding engineering companies, has made JV associations with synergistic manufacturers in various states. One association led to the development of the successful Sevinn XPR post and picket remover which is being adopted as a fast, safe and efficient way to remove high quantities of star pickets and posts in various sectors. Sevaan Group has recently invested in upgrading its powder coating and painting facilities. Sevaan Group is now looking for an even wider market sector to find suitable companies for JV alliances. “But we don’t go into the market rashly or blindly,” said Mr Panrucker. “The fit has to be very good and with high prospects for meeting market demand.” Sevaan Group Ph: 02 9824 5555 www.sevaangroup.com.au

ABB ROBOTS LEND A HELPING HAND

Handle with care … ABB’s Integrated Force Control

ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, has launched its new Integrated Force Control that can handle process variations with the sensitivity of the human hand. This new technology can shorten programming time up to 70 per cent. Making robots more intelligent, the technology can handle variations in the process with real-time external inputs — much like a human would when handling a delicate item or precise dimensions. From machining to small parts assembly, dexterous handling of work piece and tools is of the utmost concern. Small variations in the manufacturing phase can mean the difference between utmost success and failure. Conventional robotic solutions are controlled by predefined paths and speeds. However, with ABB Integrated Force Control, the robot reacts to its surrounding and can deviate from its programmed path or speed based on feedback from the force sensor. It is possible to automate complex tasks, which previously required skilled personnel and advanced fixed automation. “Integrated Force Control opens up the possibility to automate tasks that have not been possible using traditional robot automation, says ABB’s Robotic Product Specialist Paolo Maggi. “Compared with expensive, hard automation, robotic solutions are less expensive and require a greater degree of flexibility.” Robotic assembly can be very demanding with small tolerances and small parts that must fit together. With ABB’s Integrated Force Control

Feature it is possible to assemble parts with tolerances that are within the range of the robot’s incredibly precise repeatability without requiring highly accurate and expensive fixtures. In addition, a force-controlled robot can be programmed to mimic the movements of a human arm, applying search patterns to find the correct position to assemble a given part. In this way, Integrated Force Control Feature also significantly reduces the risk of assembly failures, which can result in production problems or damaged parts. ABB’s Integrated Force Control enables system integrators a new dimension of robot intelligence in machining applications such as grinding, polishing, deburring and deflashing. One of the packages’ features allows a robot to grind, polish or buff parts while maintaining a constant force between the tool and the work piece. Another feature enables a robot to deburr or deflash partlines and surfaces of parts at a controlled speed, thereby slowing down when encountering excessive burrs or casting flash.

The force sensor is fully integrated into ABB’s hardware and software, protected against overload and EMC, certified to IP65 and suitable for high precision robotic applications with a compact and lightweight design. When combined with vision sensors, ABB Integrated Force Control Function also allows for new ways of thinking about a myriad of other robotic automated functions that previously required skilled personnel. HARE & FORBES TAKES FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Cammthane is an Australian, familyowned company manufacturing and supplying polyuretyhane and engineering plastic products. Earlier this year the company celebrated its 25th Anniversary – and had every reason to celebrate. From its humble beginnings at Port Kembla on the NSW southcoast, the company now supplies more than 2000 products to a broad range of industries

including mining, steel, engineering, timber, automotive, agricultural, printing, transport and medical. Adrian and Cheryl van de Ven formed the company in 1988 to service the local steel industry as well as supplying various rubber companies with polyurethane rolls. Now based at much larger premises at Albion Park near Wollongong, with 15 fulltime employees, Cammthane has grown from strength to strength.

The company’s engineering plastics cover the full range of materials including nylon, acetal, polyethylene, teflon, polycarbonate, polypropylene, PVC and acrylic. Cammthane supplies products such as sheet, rod, tube, rollers, moulded parts or machined parts that can be produced in its fully equipped machine shop. Previously, most of the machining work was carried out manually with basic lathes and mills, including a manual CNC router. Larger jobs had to be out-sourced. But earlier this year the company decided to bring all of its work in-house. “We wanted to provide a more efficient and cost effective service for our clients,” says Cammthane production manager

Matthew van de Ven. “Our range of Engineering Plastics is ever expanding and we ensure we keep up-to-date with the latest materials.” So the company decided to source new machinery to streamline its CNC requirements. “We contacted Hare & Forbes (Machineryhouse) for advice, he says. “They are an Australian supplier with an excellent reputation in the market place. “We first started talking with their representatives at the (Austech) trade show in Melbourne.” The Hare & Forbes team recommended the Hartford Omnis 1270 VMC and Doosan Lynx 300M with Fedek

DGH65L Bar Feed for their CNC machining needs. A new machine shop was then set up within the Cammthane complex to house the new machines. And because Cammthane’s staff had no previous experience with the new machinery, Hare & Forbes provided a week’s training to bring them up to speed. “They were awesome, says Matt. “We didn’t know a single thing about operating this type of equipment – it’s a completely different program. But we have now learned everything we need to know about it. “The on-going service and support was outstanding.” According to Matthew it is one of the best moves his company has made. “It has not only improved our productivity, it has also improved quality and accuracy,” he says. The new machines are mainly used to service the booming mining industry. “We produce everything from small plastic joysticks on machines to wear and track pads, bushes, sheaves, moulds and chain guards. “The parts that come out are absolutely amazing,” says Matt. Matt has no hesitation in recommending Hare & Forbes to others. “They are top notch.” Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse have been supplying new and used workshop and engineering equipment for more than 80 years. They offer one of Australia's most extensive ranges of workshop machinery and machine tool accessories. Its head office and warehouse is located in Sydney, with supply branches and agencies in all major capitals. THE ULTIMATE IN STEEL PLATE COMPONENT PRODUCTION Flexibility in a heavy steel fabrication workshop can be an important consideration. In Australia with our high tech industrial sector, projects are often bespoke and required at short notice. The twin gantry Gemini CNC plate processing and profiling machine can perform many operations that traditionally required several machines and a large workforce. Built to exacting standards in Italy by FICEP the machines offer advanced options such as bevelling plasma torch cutting plus high speed drilling, milling and tapping all in one machine. The ability to optimise floor space by combining several processes into one machine can have many benefits especially where workshop space is at a premium. German manufacturers are renowned for their quality, efficiency, safety and attention to detail. So when the Gustav EIRICH mechanical engineering plant in Hardheim, Germany, recently launched a major reorganization of its production operation it had no hesitation in fitting out a new production bay with Demag cranes. On two levels, an integrated intralogistics solution has been installed that can be used for both transporting large and heavy mixers, as well as for serving the assembly stations with components. As a parallel to this arrangement, the two-crane-level concept has been adopted in the neighbouring paint shop operated by the company, which specialises in industrial processing systems. The two-level concept makes it possible to achieve flexible workplace design. Thanks to the compact configuration of the Demag cranes and hoist units, the height of the workshop is utilised to the best possible advantage. This has enabled investment, maintenance and energy costs to be reduced in the long term. The integrated solution, which consists of seven Demag crane installations, is based on a comprehensive master plan for reorganisation of the production processes. Mr Uwe Greissing, Factory Manager at EIRICH is responsible for the implementation of the new production strategy. “As a mechanical engineering company, we need reliable partners who provide us with advice throughout all phases and help us to select the

appropriate technologies, said Mr Greissing. “Besides the comprehensive Demag product range of cranes and hoists, the supplier’s expert consulting services were also a reason why this project was awarded to Terex Material Handling.” Two 12.5 t Demag EKKE singlegirder overhead travelling cranes were installed in the assembly area, where they travel at a height of 9.6m and serve the assembly stations with the required sub-assemblies and electric motors. On the level above, two Demag ZKKE double-girder overhead travelling cranes, which each have a load capacity of 50 t, operate at a height of 12.5m. This solution now enables EIRICH also to handle fully assembled large mixers weighing up to 46 t safely as a complete unit. The DR 20 hoist units feature twostage operation. This ensures that loads can be transported quickly and that the heavy machinery can be positioned precisely and carefully. To meet rising demand in the future, both cranes have been designed for tandem operation, which enables the total weight that can be transported to be doubled to almost 100 t. All cranes in the assembly bay can be controlled independently of each other via radio control. The highest safety standards were also incorporated. All Demag cranes are fitted with processor-based controls, which satisfy in full the safety-relevant functions as required by the Machinery Directive. Demag Cranes Ph: 1300 336 241 www.demag.com.au

WHEN IT COMES TO COMPRESSORS, SOUTHERN CROSS IS A STAR PERFORMER

Mark Ferguson … ‘sound technical advice’

When you go in to bat against some of the biggest players in the business, you must have a game plan. From its establishment in 1983, Southern Cross Compressors has set a structured pathway to success through partnerships with key customers. The strategy has enabled them to expand their facilities and personnel. The company realises that while compressed air is a powerful and essential industrial energy source, it must operate at maximum efficiency. It must maintain the lowest possible running costs – on a measurable basis. Southern Cross Compressors built their enviable reputation of excellence in engineering systems and first class customer service on the servicing, maintenance and repair of all brands of air compressor systems supplied into the market over the past 50 years. The company customises service plans to suit the needs of their clients based on the five main facets of their business: Air Audits, Design, Products, Installation and Service. Established partnerships with key manufacturers and suppliers both locally

and globally have provided the company with the unique ability to select and install the very best equipment for virtually any compressed air application. One major partnership with Kaishan Compressor Co, Asia’s largest rotary screw and reciprocating compressor designer and manufacture, has proved to be overwhelmingly successful resulting in the merging of the two companies to advance the expansion of Southern Cross Compressors within Australia and ultimately around the world. SCCA has teamed with Kaishan to develop a range of quality international products with a high emphasis on safety, pressure vessel and electrical compliance and energy efficiency. This has resulted in the extension to five years, unlimited hours warranty on all electric rotary screw compressors. Producing approximately 30,000 rotary screw compressors and over 200,000 reciprocating compressors annually for the world market, Kaishan is now by far the largest designer and manufacturer of compressors in Asia. Whilst the company will retain its identity as Southern Cross Compressors (Australia) Pty Ltd under the direction of the current management team, the alliance with Kaishan will provide a huge input into the current and future development of the company. It will immediately provide the Australian company with access to a greatly extended product range including Organic Rankine Cycle expanders, which utilise waste heat to generate electricity with major environmental and financial benefits. The company has confirmed that national expansion plans are currently being advanced following the success of the recently opened Queensland branch. With further expansion planned into other states and development of additional

highly trained and qualified technical teams, Southern Cross Compressors is well on the way to achieving their long term goal of number one recognition for compressed air products and service in Australia.

‘We have to live up to our promise of Lower Cost Compressed Air’ From small workshops needing intermittent compressed air power to run tools and small machinery to major industry requiring continuous regulated and varying output, Southern Cross Compressors are now in a position to press for high recognition throughout Australia as an international force in the compressed air industry. "Our philosophy has always and always will be to provide technically advanced products, sound technical advice and high quality services, says Mark Ferguson, National Sales and Marketing Manager.

“We have to live up to our promise of: Lower Cost Compressed Air,” Mr Ferguson says. “We are aware that everything we do today will affect how we are viewed in the future so must continue to listen to the needs of our customers, offer the best advice, provide the best equipment and deliver the best service in the industry". Clearly announcing its intentions to raise the bar in the Australian compressed air industry, the company has recently released its new logo expressing an Australia wide profile, forward movement and including its promise of Lower Cost Compressed Air. With a new national advertising and promotional campaign kicking off this year and the brand appearing on its large and ever expanding fleet of fast response service vehicles, Southern Cross Compressors is confident it will be a major player well into Australia’s industrial future. WASTE MANAGEMENT •

The Chemical Storage Story With the wide variety of chemicals in use around Australian industries it’s little wonder that for most, the standards and regulations around safe storage of chemicals is bewildering. Further complications arise with the risks involved in chemical incompatibility. A “dangerous good” is one that presents an immediate hazard to people, property or the environment. For example, flammable or corrosive chemicals. A “hazardous substance” is one where exposure can have an adverse effect on human health. For example poisons or carcinogens. Many dangerous goods are also classed as hazardous substances. The place to start is the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) which, by law in Australia, will be available for every chemical you have on site. If the chemical is a dangerous good or hazardous substance the SDS will identify that. There are also databases available on line where you can check a chemicals classification. www.hsis.safeworkaustralia.gov.au Why a special cabinet? Approved chemical storage cabinets must be used to store chemicals if you hold more than a specific quantity. Applicable quantity levels listed in the applicable standard. (see list of standards below) The risks associated with chemicals in the event of a fire are critical. Specially designed safety storage cabinets and cages are intended to minimise the risks to personnel and the environment by providing a safe containment of chemicals in the event of a leak but also a barrier in the event of a fire. Good quality cabinets can also be locked to prevent unauthorised use or theft. Safety cabinets are available in a range of sizes from lab bench sizes like 50 litres through to factory size 350 litre cabinets.

POWER STATION FINDS IDEAL WASTEWATER SOLUTION

Cabinets can also be custom made from reputable manufacturers in Australia such as Global Spill Control. The following documents apply to the safe storage of chemicals in Australia. • Dangerous Goods Storage and Handling (Code of Practice No.27, 2000). • AS/NZS 2243.10:2004 Safety in laboratories – storage of chemicals. • AS 1940:2004 The storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids. • AS 4326-2008 The storage and handling of oxidising agents • AS 2714 The storage and handling of hazardous chemical materials - Class 5.2 Substances • AS/NZS 4452:1997 The storage and handling of toxic substances • AS 3780-2008 The storage and handling of corrosive substances • AS/NZS 3833:2007 The storage and handling of mixed classes of Dangerous Goods, in packages and intermediate bulk containers. Cutting edge … the Gorman-Rupp V3B60-B self-priming pump

The Energy Australia maintenance team at the Mt Piper Power Station in the Central West region of NSW were having continuing maintenance issues with their submersible wastewater pumping stations on the site. The problems were many and varied, including lifting chains breaking, pumps becoming stuck on their guide rails, as well as general reliability issues. Worst of all, operators were exposed to a 7m fall into the pit while hoisting submersible pumps to the surface. Equipment failures at the bottom of wet wells exacerbated the issues, adding OH&S problems associated with confined spaces entry to the problems. Because of these risks and the need to inventory and maintain confined spaces entry equipment (such as personnel lifting apparatus), the Team Leader from their Maintenance Store decided to outsource this task to professionals in the field. But this proved to be quite an expensive exercise. The high cost of maintaining these systems (whether using internal or external crews) and the desire to create a safer working environment for those working in the area, drove plant owner

Hydraulic Powered Light Industrial Duty

Rainer Scheurer to search for a better solution. He decided to ask Hydro Innovations to investigate a GormanRupp self-priming pump option. The application was not tough in flow (15L per second) or head (10m of total dynamic head), but the pit (wet well) was quite deep, putting the pump on a 7.6m suction lift – a tough ask for some selfpriming pumps. Sean Currie, from Hydro Innovations, explained that most self priming pumps with a full casing of liquid are capable of priming to this level, but re-priming automatically, with only a partially (sewage) filled casing (because casing siphoning can occur between pump cycles) is a totally different proposition. Sean proposed a Gorman-Rupp V3B60-B, which is part of the latest range of self-priming sewage pumps from the industry leader. The pump is at the cutting edge of self-priming wastewater pumping technology and is capable of handling a 76mm spherical solid, delivering the best efficiency in its class. And because of a patented selfcleaning wear plate system, it is able to handle stringy materials such as rags. Scheurer liked the idea of the pumps being located high and dry above the wet well to enable operators to monitor and service the pumps without the need to enter wet wells or lift the wet well lids. And overall, Energy Australia is delighted they chose Gorman-Rupp selfpriming pump technology. Hydro Innovations Ph: 02 9898 1800 www.hydroinnovations.com.au

SIPPEL AIRSKATE: SIMPLICITY SPELLS SAFETY

This simple Four AS22-HP Airskate System (pictured) from the Sippel Group can be set up to move equipment weighing up to 16-tonnes. It floats a load suspended by controlled air passing into and then out from under the diaphragms.

This allows almost frictionless movement from A to B in a relatively short time. The tiny air gap between diaphragm and floor emits a controlled airflow, which is not fast enough to blow out a lighted match held close by. Two Airskate Hovair diaphragms are visible on the left, with the flat top steel load interface shown on the right, with optional attachment tapped holes. The Yellow Hose Coil (20m or more) connects to the Pipe (silver) Manifold then to the Air Supply. The Manifold connects via green coiled tubing (4) to the Airskate Modules (4). The Manifold Inbuilt Control Valve

is controlled by the Handheld Deadman (yellow tubing connections). The diaphragms when signalled from the Manual Deadman Control gently lift the load. Then it is just a matter of a slight push or pull and observation over or around the load for careful easy movement to the desired location, on a suitable horizontal surface. Ramps can also be negotiated. The Deadman is there to stop the load in an emergency or it completes the job by gently depositing the load where required. To set up each Airskate Module is usually just matter of placing or sliding each skate under the load in an

appropriate position. You then simply hook up the airlines to the designed Manifold Deadman Combo – and hey presto – most loads are ready to move. Adequate vision around the load and along the selected path ensures optimum safety. A supporting floor such as a steel trowelled factory floor is all that is needed with sometimes a slip sheet of thin steel or lino if floor surface is below par. Timber and grid floors have also been negotiated with the Airskate Hovair. Sippel Group Ph: 02 9567 4889

DEMATIC DELIVERS ‘SEISMIC-PROOF’ STORAGE SYSTEM TO NZ Dematic, a leader in warehouse logistics and materials handling solutions, will supply a purpose-built storage system to a company in Christchurch that is able to deal with earthquakes. The ColbyRACK storage system was ordered by New Zealand’s largest grocery distributor, Foodstuffs South Island Ltd (FSSI), for its new 46,000sqm distribution centre. Purpose-built to deal with the forces generated by seismic events, it features a multi-level order picking module, conveyor sorting system and associated order fulfilment software. While the new distribution centre is essentially a Greenfield project, it will be physically connected to FSSI’s existing 13,000sqm ambient centre at Hornby. Hornby has provided centralised distribution to the co-operative’s members for the past five years. The new centre, which will also consolidate operations from FSSI’s Papanui distribution centre in Christchurch, will have the capacity to store more than 40,000 pallets to a height of 10.7m. It is expected to begin distributing stock by the third quarter of 2014. The FSSI Hornby distribution centre was one of more than 40 in Christchurch to suffer significant storage system damage during the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch on September 4, 2010. “Having been through the experience of dealing with a major rack collapse, we never want to go through that again, said

FSSI Logistics Operations Manager Kris Lancaster. “The DC was a total mess and we were very fortunate that the earthquake occurred at 4.35 am and there was minimal staff on the warehouse floor at the time. We immediately began researching what we could do to ensure if another earthquake of such magnitude were to occur again, that our storage systems would stand up to it.” Mr Lancaster said FSSI had been working with Dematic on various real-time logistics and automated order fulfilment projects for several years. “We were aware of the sound reputation Dematic had gained for the structural integrity of its ColbyRACK storage systems, he explained. “Working closely with Dematic’s structural engineering team headed up by Dr Murray Clarke we came up with a new storage system layout that optimised the available footprint and airspace within our ambient distribution centre. “Dematic really pulled out all stops to push the project through as quickly as possible, and our new ColbyRACK system was designed, manufactured, shipped and installed at the Hornby DC in just over three months.” Following the installation of the ColbyRACK, the Hornby distribution centre continued to experience many aftershocks from the September 4, 2010 earthquake. The storage system’s first real test came when another major seismic event

APOLLO GIVES PILBARA A LIFT

rocked Christchurch on February 22, 2011. The 6.3 magnitude earthquake caused even more significant damage to the city than the September 4, 2010 earthquake, resulting in the death of 185 people. “When the February 22, 2011 earthquake struck at 12.51pm, our distribution centre was in full swing, with many of our people on the warehouse floor at the time, said Mr Lancaster. “Obviously, this was a pretty scary experience for everyone given that they had all seen the result of the previous earthquake less than six months prior. “However, despite this seismic event causing much more damage across the city than the September 4, 2010 earthquake, our new ColbyRACK did the job it was designed to.” Mr Lancaster said the racking system stood up to everything the earthquake threw at it. “We didn’t lose a single pallet, and a subsequent inspection by a structural engineer prior to our people re-entering the DC confirmed the ColbyRACK system didn’t suffer a single component failure, he said. “So when it came time to look at what we would do with storage systems in our new Greenfield DC, there was never any hesitation in selecting Dematic to fit-out the warehouse with high-rise ColbyRACK.” Dematic Pty Limited Ph: 02 9486 5555 www.dematic.com.au

END CAP BALL BEARING FOR LONG-TERM USE Maintenance-free dry run tribologically optimised polymer xirodur B180 polymer ball bearings guarantee low friction values for the inner and outer bearing ring. This plastic ball bearing allows high rotational speeds with a limit speed of 1,800rpm. The xiros end cap ball bearing can be equipped optionally with glass, plastic or stainless steel balls. The balls are housed in a polyamide cage, which guarantees high strength and ductility. The tribo-polymer xirodur-B180 also

makes the end cap ball bearing resistant to chemicals and corrosion, meaning temperatures of between -40°C and +80°C can be managed without any malfunctions, even over long periods. The low weight of between 32.5-25.9gm permits installation even under very low weight requirements. The axial load-bearing capacity is 245N in static use and 294 N in dynamic applications. The new xiros end cap ball bearing can be used for a whole range of applications such

as roller conveyors and since no lubrication is required, unnecessary soiling and the risky use of solvents can now be avoided. The ball bearings can be cleaned with water. This is important where soiling is not tolerated at all, such as the food or packaging industries. Treotham Automation Pty Ltd Ph: 9907 1778 www.treotham.com.au

TURCK has introduced a new QR24 rotary position sensor providing contactless position detection and wear-free performance. Designed from the company’s rotary inductive sensor technology, the QR24 is ideal for a variety of industrial applications ranging from solar energy plants and harvesters to crane vehicles and AGVs. Rotary feedback is critical in nearly every installation, and most rely on their mechanical bearings to provide proper tolerance and position of the internal system. After time, this results in mechanical wear, vibrations, potential leaks and requires spring elements. The QR24 provides superior performance without the need for contact or bearings, allowing it to successfully execute the same functions as an encoder or potentiometer, while eliminating wear and extending sensor longevity. “Today’s rotary encoder applications are becoming more demanding,” said Marty Cwach, Product Manager, TURCK. “More and more applications require a higher degree of ingress protection, smaller package size and longer life expectancy. TURCK’s new QR24 incorporates these new requirements and meets or exceeds the demands.” The TURCK QR24 is part of the company’s industry-recognized Q-track family of sensors, which utilize resistance inductive capacitance (RLC) measuring technology. Unlike potentiometric or magnetic technologies, the sensors incorporate precisely manufactured printed emitter and receiver coil systems. The emitter coils are activated with a high frequency AC field and produce an inductive RLC circuit with the

positioning element. The element is inductively coupled with the receiver coils, which are arranged so different voltages are induced in the coils, depending on the position of the actuator. The voltages serve as a measure for the sensor signal. The QR24’s multi-coil system provides high resolution, while ensuring 16-bit noiseless operation. The sensor also features a double resonator system, providing increased distance capability and high-end signal processing with multi-core multiprocessor for enhanced speed. TOUGH NEW TECHNOLOGY FROM STRATASYS Stratasys Ltd, a global leader in 3D printing technology, has introduced the first nylon material specifically engineered for the company's line of Fortus 3D Production Systems. Stratasys believes that with its new FDM Nylon 12, its Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology creates tougher, more flexible unfilled nylon parts than other additive manufacturing technologies can. FDM Nylon 12 offers up to five times greater resistance to breaking and better impact strength compared to even the strongest FDM materials. The new material's elongationat-break specification surpasses that of other 3D printed nylon 12 material by up to 100 percent based on published specifications. This can create new opportunities for manufacturers in aerospace, automotive, home appliance and consumer electronics to more easily create durable parts that can stand up to high vibration, repetitive stress or fatigue. Examples include end-use parts, like interior panels, covers, environmental control ducting and vibration-resistant components, as well as tools, manufacturing aids, and jigs and fixtures used in the manufacturing process.

"Nylon is one of the most widely used materials in today's plastic products, and among FDM users it has been one of the top requested materials," said Fred Fischer, Stratasys materials product director. "It is also the first semi-crystalline material and the toughest material Stratasys has ever offered. We expect it to be used for applications requiring repetitive snap fits, high fatigue endurance, strong chemical resistance, high impact strength or press-fit inserts. This material offers users a clean, simple way to produce nylon parts with an additive process." FDM Nylon 12 is available for the Fortus 360, 400 and 900 systems. FDM Nylon 12 is initially offered in black, and is paired with SR110, a new soluble support material optimized for FDM Nylon 12. Support removal requires virtually no labor and is conveniently washed away in the same cleaning agent as other FDM soluble supports. Interested customers should contact their local Stratasys reseller to inquire about special promotional pricing. The company also introduced Xtend 184 double-capacity canisters for three popular Fortus materials:

reliability of the Nissan forklift, has made that decision a successful one.” Mr Abell and his warehouse staff (pictured) were pleased with the new Nissan 2.5T container forks and the All New Nissan Euro Reach trucks to complement their operations at the large Laverton warehouse facility. EE Muir, a family owned company, distributes farming and agricultural supplies to clients throughout Australia through 26 rural depots. Each depot will upgrade its material handling equipment with the Nissan 2.5T container fork. The Nissan is a class leader with a impressive range of options as standard. Warehouse operators loved the Nissan’s smooth ride and its

responsiveness in lift mode. The Nissan makes their time in the saddle more comfortable and day-today operations more efficient. Lencrow tailored a package to suit EE Muir & Sons nationwide stores. New forklifts were delivered to all states including Katherine and Humptydoo in the Northern Territory and Ayr and Tully in far North Queensland. To do this Lencrow amortised the costs, providing long term, fully maintained rental equipment and service backup through its extensive network of state branches and local agents. FLIR CAMERAS HELP TO DETECT DANGEROUS GAS LEAKS Inspectahire is a leading international supplier of specialist remote visual inspection technology and solutions to companies in many industries around the world. Established in 1981, the company is supported by the most advanced technologies available. Inspectahire helps its customers manage their safety, profitability and environmental impact of their assets. When the company needs to detect fugitive hydrocarbon emissions, FLIR’s GF320 Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera is its preferred technology to use. Inspectahire offers equipment rental, contracting and project engineering services supported by a team of skilled engineers who have a wealth of inspection knowledge and experience. Their expertise extends to a wide range of equipment and assets, both onshore and offshore, and in all environments – including harsh and hazardous. All Inspectahire’s advanced inspection solutions are carried out in accordance with

the requirements of ISO 9001 best practice. Having worked for three decades in the Oil & Gas industry, both in the North Sea and worldwide, Inspectahire has built up a strong expertise in this sector. Safety and cost are two of the biggest concerns in the offshore oil and gas industry today. Inspectahire realizes this as no other and therefore aims to tackle those challenges by using the best technologies available. “The offshore oil and gas industry are proactive in their search for the best technologies for detecting emissions that may affect the safety, profitability and environmental impact of their assets,” says Cailean Forrester, Managing Director of Inspectahire. “At Inspectahire we strive to identify and offer the best available technological solutions for all remote inspection scenarios.” Dangerous gas leaks are a concern to every oil and gas production plant. Not only do some of the gases harm

the environment, but the leaks also cost companies substantial amounts of money. “The company has been using thermal imaging cameras for a very long time to detect dangerous gas leaks,” Forrester says. “Thanks to thermal imaging cameras, we can easily detect gases in difficult to reach or hazardous locations. And we can help companies prevent costly downtime of their production plant.” “We have been using certain contact measurement tools like laser detectors or leaks sniffers,” says Forrester. “But the problem is that you have to go right up to the object, which is not always safe or even possible. In other words, this approach is limited and not very precise. With a thermal imaging camera like the GF320 however, you can keep a safe distance and still detect gas leaks with great precision.” The Inspectahire team is using the GF320 optical gas imaging camera for maintenance inspections and for all its hydrocarbon detection jobs, in hydrocarbon production plants or for the inspection of any material that uses hydrocarbon as a fuel. The GF320 camera offers a range of tangible benefits compared to traditional

hydrocarbon leak sniffers, because it can scan a broader area much more rapidly and monitor areas that are difficult to reach with contact measurement tools. The portable camera also greatly improves operator safety, by detecting emission at safe distance. FLIR SYSTEMS Australia Pty Ltd Ph: 1300 729 987 www.flir.com

SPACE SAVING SOLUTIONS FROM KOBOT Kobot Systems have unique storage solutions for your warehousing and logistics needs. The company offers heavy duty metal stillages that are collapsible and foldable to maximise space. They are ideal for companies involved in third party logistics (3PL). This includes picking goods from different customer suppliers, sending to a depot for sorting and re-shipping to end-users. Traditionally, goods are placed on a pallet and the goods are shrink-wrapped to protect them from falling off. On arrival, the shrink-wrapping is removed and the goods are transferred to another pallet and shrink-wrapped again. End-users must then remove the shrink-wrap and dispose of the empty pallet. This is very time consuming and is a waste of time and materials. It is also bad for the environment as it generates much plastic waste. Kobot’s collapsible and foldable stillages, available in a wide range of different sizes, are the ideal solution. The standard 1165 x1165mm base,

Different sizes … collapsible stillages from Kobot Systems

designed for Australian conditions, allows you to easily load trucks and containers with two stillages abreast. All four sides can be folded in half for easy access and loading, and two sides removable to allow walk in access for loading and unloading. Also, a tall stillage is available for the storage of tall items, sharing the same stacking footprint of 1165mm x 1165mm. Stillages can be stacked up to five high without pallet racking, when fully loaded. Goods are visible through the mesh and there is no strapping or shrink wrapping required.

IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY WITH STARRETT MEASURING PRODUCTS In today’s rapidly changing and challenging manufacturing environment, there has never been a greater need for dimensional measurement equipment that ensures both product quality and compliance. At the same time, equipment must be easy for non-metrologists to use. Starrett manual vision systems have been designed with these objectives in mind. They are affordable, repeatable, highly accurate, and will improve the output and productivity of any quality department. The product features the latest measurement software, known as M3.

Users can easily measure features such as circles, lines, arcs and PCDs. This simple process is done by touching the edge of the feature to be measured on the touch screen PC. “The Starrett Galileo vision systems with the Metlogix M3 software are by far the simplest and easy to use software available on the market, says Starrett business development manager, David Eldridge. “They use touch screen PCs and Windows 7 operating systems, and are very user friendly.” Starrett has an extensive range of both

manual and full CNC-controlled vision systems – all running the M3 software with 200x200 and 300x300 X-Y stage formats and up to 200mm of Z-axis travel, 3 channel lighting and either 6.5:1 or 12:1 zoom or fitted with a range of telecentric lenses for large field of view (FOV) measurement. These products are manufactured at Starrett’s engineering facility in Southern California. All are fully-supported and serviced by the Starrett Metrology Products team in Australia.

ADVANCED NEW TEST AND TAG SYSTEM FROM EMONA The new Seaward ProTag Elite System, distributed by Emona Instruments, is Australia’s most advanced testing and tagging and asset inspection management system. It tests portable appliances and RCDs, records asset photographs and inspections, prints Elite UV and harsh environment resistant test tags and downloads all test results, asset photos and inspections to management software.

The ProTag Elite System comprises the Seaward Primetest Elite appliance and RCD tester, ProTag Elite test tag printer, bar code scanner and PATGuard Elite 3 asset management software. The PrimeTest Elite carries out all of the tests required under AS/NZS3760 for appliances and leads, and carries our 30mA RCD tests. It also operates as a handheld asset inspection system by allowing asset

photographs to be taken using the in-built camera with flash and users can record any type of test, inspection or risk assessment with their own user defined inspection routines. This eliminates the need for carrying around a separate tablet or laptop for recording the results of non-electrical inspections and risk assessments. Other advanced features of the PrimeTest Elite include compact

QWERTY keypad, high definition colour display, USB for data upload/download, inbuilt isolation transformer and a huge on-board memory that stores 50,000 assets and 2,000 asset photographs. RICHMOND SETS SIGHTS ON NEW CHALLENGES When it comes to custom engineering design and manufacture Richmond Wheel & Castor Co are industry leaders. Never shying away from challenging projects, the team at Richmond has developed a reputation as solution providers for large-scale ventures. There most recent large scale project was to design an effective wheel system for the new cricket sight screen at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval (known as Blundstone Arena). This project was a completely new concept in cricket ground sight screens, positioning the Tasmanian oval at the forefront of Australian and world cricket facilities. Camden Neon Signs for Cricket Australia was responsible for the track design and size of the screen. Richmond was appointed to “make it move.” Priding themselves on being “wheelmakers for industry” this is the kind of project where Richmond’s team shines. The team custom designed the support wheels and the drive wheel system. This included all electrical motors, programmable controllers and limit switches, before embarking on in-house manufacture. Each screen features a dual drive electric motor system to gain enough traction to swiftly and smoothly move the 5000kg screen. Drawing on 57 years of pipe roller manufacture and design experience, the system consists of eight carriages per screen. Each carriage features six wheels manufactured from 65D polyurethane, while the track is constructed from heavy wall 150 nominal bore pipe. The sight screen is a fully LED TV screen and advertising board, installed in time for the Big Bash

68

League and the KFC T20 International. The entire track and screen system is bolted to concrete foundations that have been cast deep into the oval. Rather than having the track system for the screen permanently fixed to the stadium, this system can be completely removed for the football season. Featuring round pipe for a roller coaster look and painted in iconic “baggy green,” the sight screen is not only functional but also aesthetically unique. With a national head office in Melbourne at Clayton South offering in-house design and manufacture as well as branches nationally, Richmond is well placed to service material handling projects for all industries.
