Life in Dublin It is fitting that you are considering furthering your education in a city famous for it’s literary and academic achievement. Today Dublin is a thriving, effervescent capital with a young, easy-going population and all the cultural, sporting and entertainment venues you need. Living Independent College Dublin is located in the middle of the city centre and is accessible from any part of the city and its suburbs by bus, rail or Luas. Student-friendly accommodation is widely available in Dublin city. The Arts The city has a rich cultural heritage, complemented by a buzzing, eclectic contemporary arts scene. Dublin has a world famous literary history, having produced many prominent literary figures, including Nobel laureates William Butler Yeats, Bernard Shaw and Samuel Becket. World premieres of new plays at the Abbey Theatre are a feature of the Dublin arts scene, but so too are the diverse offerings of the Dublin Fringe Festival. Masterpieces of Irish art are displayed in the National Gallery whilst the work of new and upcoming artists can be found in a variety of settings such as converted warehouses and pop-up studios throughout the city. Dublin is a UNESCO-designated City of Literature and the city is home to several new and second-hand bookstores. Entertainment Dublin is host to over 1000 pubs, plus a wide array of student-friendly restaurants and cafés. The city’s smallest bar, the Dawson Lounge, is adjacent to the College campus, and the neighbourhood has everything from historic pubs to fashionable late-night clubs. A thriving live music scene is an important aspect of nightlife in Dublin. Venues range from intimate spaces such as indie haven Whelan’s of Wexford Street or JJ Smyth’s jazz bar to the O2 Arena in the Docklands. The city also offers comedy clubs, arthouse and multiplex cinemas, weekend flea markets and a range of festivals throughout the year. Sports Local, national and international sporting events are a feature of life in Dublin and there’s plenty to keep both the active sportsperson and the armchair enthusiast entertained. Join the crowds at the stunning Aviva Stadium for international rugby and football matches, or cheer the runners along the streets of the Dublin City Marathon.
