The Independent College Dublin Debating Society 2010-2011 Commission of Northern Ireland” in UCD L+H where the first of Independent College Dublin Debating Society’s 18 speakers across 9 teams launched our campaign 2011!! Debating Soc team members travelled across the country to debate on behalf of the college from Galway to Maynooth, from UCD to the less arduous jaunt to the Trinity College’s TCD Hist. This year has been a very active and successful year for the Debating Soc at the College. We entered the two most prestigious National and European 3rd Level Debating Competitions, The Irish Times Debating Competition and the International Mace Debating Competition. Independent College Dublin Debating Society members this year crossed verbal swords with the best from Trinity College, Dublin, UCD, UCC, University Of Limerick, The Kings’ Inns, UCG, Queens University Belfast, Griffith College, NUI Maynooth, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and DCU.
In the Mace Debating Competition again we entered a strong field of 18 speakers also across 9 teams and pushed through to the quarter finals in addition this year to hosting two rounds of ‘The Mace’ in January where Independent College Dublin Debating Society played host to teams from UCD L+H; TCD Phil; University of Limerick; TCD Hist and The Kings Inns.
We held a series of in house college debates culminating in the Annual Best Speaker ICDS Plate Debate 2011 where over plates of delicious nibbles and plentiful libations Damian McKeon emerged victorious after a pugnacious evening of heated debate and picked up the gleaming silverware.
