A Look Inside: Distance Learning Annual Meeting Recap Member News IRED Coming Events

I

t is a great honor to serve as President of our noble and necessary association and it is with pride that I join a long and distinguished list of former Presidents of IHEA. From my own informal survey of the IHEA membership, I am happy to report that our member companies are faring much better now than in the challenging economic environment of the past several years. As a result our organization is strong with 56 member companies and our educational programs are experiencing growth as well. We welcome new board members Jack Marino of Hauck Manufacturing and Tim Lee of Maxon Corporation. Thanks go to both for their previous efforts on IHEA’s Education and Safety Standards committees. We are pleased to have such valuable additions to our Board of Directors. Thanks again to retiring board member Dr. Louis Etschmaier for his contributions over the years. Louis has graciously volunteered to continue to represent IHEA as needed in Europe on issues relating to ISO standards. All board members were present on July 20 in Chicago for an all day session on IHEA’s present and future direction. The consensus is that our Educational programs represent one of our most successful missions and that they benefit from periodic revision in both content and mode of delivery. We also agreed to increase our involvement with students and educational institutions and we will be looking into the possibility of opening a special type of membership for academia. Our recent launch of the IHEA Home Study Course (now called IHEA’s Distance Learning Courses) over the Internet has been deemed a success. 14 individuals took the first course with 93% reporting that they are interested in more on-line educational programs. Congratulations to the entire team who contributed their expertise to the various chapters. The advanced course is nearing completion and will also be offered on-line in September. The IHEA Safety Seminar has increased in attendance largely because of newly revised material reflecting recent changes to the code most of which were initiated by our Safety Standards Committee. 38 attendees participated in May in Chicago and reviews were favorable. The IRED division has produced a new handbook for industry and is developing an infrared seminar based on the handbook materials. This new seminar is slated for a debut on November 6 in Indianapolis in conjunction with our Fall Business Conference and Combustion Seminar and plans to offer it at various

locations in the coming year are also underway. The Process Heating Assessment Tool (PHAST) is still undergoing refinement and broadening of scope. This tool is being used in the DoE Save Energy Now program to assess 200 large plants to identify areas where energy consumption and costs can be lowered. The first 61 assessments have identified a total of almost $200 million per year in potential energy cost savings. Within the first 30 days of implementing energy saving measures recommended during the assessments, eight plants reported a total of $1 million in immediate savings. I encourage those of you who are not familiar with PHAST to evaluate it as a sales tool to help justify new equipment and upgrading to modern, energy-efficient designs. This software is available from DoE on CD or as a download and training sessions are being held across the country. Next up is Columbus on September 13. Several case studies are posted on the DoE web site such as the following example of Metlab (a heat treat facility) see http://www1.eere. energy.gov/industry/ bestpractices/pdfs/metlab.pdf. All of the above educational programs are fine examples of how IHEA can leverage its strength and expertise to the benefit of our membership and the industry as a whole. As I mentioned at the Annual Meeting, most member companies have seen exports increasing steadily over the last decade. The board feels we need to strengthen our relationships with CECOF (the European counterpart of IHEA) and JIFMA (the Japanese Industrial Furnace Manufacturers Association). As you may know, IHEA formed a Technical Advisory Group through ANSI to object to a proposed ISO standard that would have applied commercial burner standards to industrial equipment to the detriment of many IHEA members. Our friends from CECOF and JIFMA voted with us to defeat the proposal. It is my hope that continued international cooperation will benefit our industry and that we may be able to work towards an ISO standard equivalent to NFPA 86. IHEA will have a booth at two upcoming trade shows this fall. Powder Coating 2006 from September 19 - 21 in Indianapolis and Furnaces North America in Reno on September 27 & 28. IHEA DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM OFF TO A STRONG START

A

fter years of work and dedication, IHEA officially launched it’s Distance Learning Program in June with the Fundamentals of Industrial Process Heating. This course, along with an Advanced Industrial Process Heating course, is being offered on-line in partnership with ETAC – the Electrotechnologies Application Center – at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. The Fundamentals of Industrial Process Heating course was held this past June through July with 14 students taking our first distance-learning course. The Fundamentals course reviews the fundamentals of combustion fuels; burners and combustion equipment; the basics of controls including the instrumentation and control for efficient operation of furnaces and ovens; and the principles of heat transfer. From reading the student evaluations and discussing the course with instructor, Bill Clark, the first course was a resounding success. 100% of the students said they would recommend the course to co-workers and 93% stated they are interested in taking additional distance learning courses from IHEA. Students from our Fundamentals course had the following to say about the course: “This was the first Distance Learning Course I have been involved in.; I enjoyed the flexibility of working at my own pace, yet having the interaction with the other students; Also, the instructor was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable; I would definitely participate in another online course because of the very positive experience.”

“It will be helpful in assisting customers with application questions.” “This will help me with economic evaluations of existing process heating operations and in recommending electrotechnology options.” “Text was well written. It provided a good reminder of my earlier engineering coursework but also offered a more practical approach.” “Very informative and I enjoyed reading the message board to see what other people had to say.” Course Instructor, Bill Clark said, “I was very pleased with both the students participation and commitment to the course. Their evaluations show that we are offering a valuable service to the industry.” Advanced Industrial Process Heating will help students learn how to achieve efficient instrumentation, control and operation of industrial process heating equipment; gain familiarity with a wide variety of industrial ovens, furnace and kiln types; differentiate among a wide variety of refractories and insulation; use vacuum heat processing, recuperators and regenerators; work with atmospheres and quenching; and cut costs to save money.

“I will end up using this type of information every day for quotes and sales tasks. It will be a very integral part of my education.”

Both courses are being offered simultaneously starting in September. The complete course outline for both courses and registration information are available on www.ihea.org under EDUCATION. 1.6 CEU credits will be given for passing each course. On-line registration is now open at www.etctr.com/ iheacourse.htm. Registration deadline for both courses closes on September 4. These courses will be repeated in 2007.

“I am currently using the information form this course and comparing it to the methods that we use to make calculations and attempting to update and possibly redefine a few procedures. The course book and power point slides are on my desk and will be reference material for me.”

Many individuals and companies were involved in providing content and graphics for the course. All are acknowledged in the Course book that is provided to each student. IHEA extends a sincere thank you to everyone involved in this project to bring it to fruition. ■

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, Continued from front page staff the booth, please contact Anne Goyer at aygoyer@one.net to be added to the work schedule. The experiment in co-locating our annual meeting with the Metal Treating Institute in Florida last April was a delightful success. Both organizations saved money while upgrading the entertainment and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I personally found it rewarding to participate in the roundtable discussions with users of heat processing equipment. The post-meeting survey indicated that most

IHEA members would like to co-locate again, but not every year—possibly once every three years. As always your comments are welcome. I hope to see you all at the Fall Business Conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday, November 8. Our Association is prospering as a direct result of the volunteer efforts by our members who are active on the various committees of IHEA. Thank you for contributing to the benefit of our industry in so many ways.

Despatch Introduces Paint Sample Baking Tool Despatch Industries has announced the company’s latest innovation for the paint industry, the Paint Sample Baking Tool. This custom oven was designed in cooperation with a major automobile producer and an international paint supplier. The automotive industry has developed the need to test the performance of paint curing utilizing more variables than a standard paint sample baking oven can analyze. This new oven goes beyond the scope of previously manufactured paint testing ovens by utilizing a “chamber in chamber” design. The oven was created as a small lab tool that can accurately replicate the paint curing process in a full-size produc-

tion facility. The outer chamber of the oven simulates the temperature of a full production line and the inner testing chamber represents the characteristics of the production oven where the actual paint curing takes place. The Paint Sample Baking Tool can be manipulated to imitate either gas or electric heat, and if the oven being replicated by the paint sample tool utilizes gas heat, the testing oven contains monitoring ports to allow the user to observe NOx and SOx concentration levels. ■

Industrial Process Business Case Tool in Development When developing a business case to justify capital for a project there are a number of factors that need to be considered. Many times only one or two factors are ever evaluated due to lack of time to investigate the other areas. The IRED Division of IHEA is in the process of developing a tool called “Industrial Process Business Case Tool” that can help evaluate all the factors and determine a dollar value to help in developing the business case. It evaluates the following factors of a project: • Productivity • Quality • Reliability • Maintenance • Energy Costs • Idle Time • Environmental Impacts • Equipment Footprint • Capital Costs The “Industrial Process Business Case Tool” will be available to all IHEA members by first quarter of 2007 and preliminary information on the tool will be included at IHEA’s booth at POWDER COATING 2006 and FURNACES NORTH AMERICA. ■
