En lo que respecta a la actividad empresarial, quiso destacar que “a pesar de todos los problemas e inconvenientes, las épocas de cambio también ofrecen oportunidades en nuevos campos de negocio y de actividad empresarial”. Y, dentro de este contexto, consideró preciso resaltar el valor social del buen empresario y de la actividad emprendedora e innovadora como factores de gran importancia para superar la crisis. “Sabemos que el espíritu emprendedor y una de sus más directas manifestaciones que es la creación de empresas actúan como catalizadores del crecimiento económico al señalar oportunidades nuevas de negocio, crear tejido económico y, sobre todo, generar empleo”. En este sentido subrayó la gran labor en España y en todo el mundo que desarrollan muchas firmas españolas y sus profesionales, quienes con su esfuerzo y su talento han logrado mantener posiciones de liderazgo en muchos países y contribuir de este modo al crecimiento económico y al progreso social de un buen número de países. “Estos profesionales, hombres y mujeres formados en algunas de las universidades y escuelas de negocios más prestigiosas como el IE, comprendieron bien que la educación era el instrumento imprescindible para mejorar sus expectativas profesionales, optimizar la competitividad de las compañías y favorecer una mayor amplia integración social”. Una educación que debe asumir cambios muy importantes, muchos derivados de la necesaria incorporación de la tecnología. En este nuevo entorno educativo, según el príncipe Felipe, “el profesor ha dejado de ser el tradicional maestro para convertirse en la persona que actúa más como facilitador que como guardián del conocimiento. Y en este nuevo contexto hay que tener muy en cuenta la importancia de la formación continua, pues los conocimientos y los desafíos sobre gestión y empresa están en permanente evolución”.

In this new educational setting, according to Prince Felipe: “Teachers no longer play the role of the traditional schoolteacher and have become people who act more as facilitators than as knowledge-keepers. In this new context, special consideration must be given to the importance of continuous training, since knowledge -and challenges facing management and business- are in permanent evolution.” He ended his speech by referring to the “need for favouring greater social integration, which must be a permanent and absolute objective”. Accordingly, special value must be seen in the essential commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. “Today, no one conceives serious, far-reaching business activity, regardless of size, without including as fundamental objectives those that refer to basic solidarity with all citizens and the environment.” Fernando Barnuevo, President of the IE Alumni Association, then spoke words of welcome to the more than 1,000 attendees from 50 nations, “ambassadors of a great school as multicultural and multiracial as IE” and fundamental proof of our community’s diversity.
