IE U.K. CLUB, LONDON CHAPTER Evolución del papel de los Consejos / Evolving role of the Board La futura revisión de la sala de juntas fue el tema de un debate dinámico organizado por IE Business School en Londres. Santiago Íñiguez de Onzoño, decano de IE Business School, utilizó la línea de apertura de Dickens Un cuento de dos ciudades para establecer adecuadamente la escena: “Fue el mejor de los tiempos, era el peor de los tiempos”. Presidido por la profesora del IE Lucy Marcus, IE reunió a un panel de líderes de opinión, con el fin de discutir sobre la evolución del papel de la junta y cómo las agendas de juntas deben adaptarse a nuestros tiempos. Uno de los panelistas, Manny Amadi, exlíder del Foro Económico Mundial Global del Mañana, en su intervención quiso hacer hincapié en la sostenibilidad como responsabilidad principal de la sala de juntas. Por su parte, Rory Cellan-Jones, corresponsal de BBC Technology, manifestó que los consejos deben fijar más su atención en el entorno empresarial en rápida evolución provocada por la tecnología y en los medios de comunicación social en rápido crecimiento. Trevor Philips OBE, presidente de la Comisión de Igualdad y Derechos Humanos, consideró que las cuotas o los actos de equilibrio étnico / género no eran lo fundamental, sino
la necesidad de asegurar una amplia gama de voces fuertes que reflejen nuestra cambiante sociedad. Sir Robert Worcester, fundador de MORI, se centró en la estrategia y el establecimiento de una cultura corporativa como principales funciones de la junta. Y finalmente Sue O’Brien, consejera delegada de Norman Broadbent, consideró que un consejo eficaz debe incluir una amplia gama de conocimientos especializados.
Future-Proofing the Boardroom was the topic of a dynamic debate hosted by IE Business School in London. Santiago Iñiguez de Onzoño used the opening line of Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities to aptly set the scene: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Chaired by IE professor Lucy Marcus, IE brought together a panel of opinion
leaders to discuss the evolving role of the Board and how boardroom agendas must adapt to our changing times. Panellist Manny Amadi, a former WEF Global Leader for Tomorrow, stressed sustainability as a core boardroom responsibility. Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC Technology Correspondent, felt boards need to fix their attention far more on the rapidly changing business environment brought about by technology and the burgeoning social media. Trevor Philips OBE, chair of the Equal and Human Rights Commission, thought that quotas or ethnic / gender balancing acts were not the critical thing – more a need to ensure a wide range of strong voices that reflect our changing society. Sir Robert Worcester, founder of MORI, emphasized strategy and establishing a corporate culture as key roles of the Board. He said it was the chairman’s role to act as a facilitator but it was also the chairman’s duty to ask the “last question”, the difficult question others had avoided. Sue O’Brien, CEO Norman Broadbent, believes that an effective Board should comprise a broad range of expertise, experts that mirror the company and reflect the company’s wider impact.

Last 11-12 November, the II Business Update Seminar, organized annually, was held in Zaragoza (JAEM II). The conference aims to provide a “networking space and give experts the chance to share their ideas on current business and economic affairs; they disclose, analyze and reflect on the latest developments and trends in business management, economics, innovation and technology,” said Manuel Roque ,Director of the Centre for European Business and Innovation in Ciudad Real and Entrepreneurship Venture Lab Tutor at IE Business School. Roque, with Luis Barba, CEO and Co-Founder of EVAIR, promoted and organized the event.
