Safety in Fluid Power Systems

AS AN EMPLOYEE at Womack for 26 years, I have had several jobs. I spent almost 10 years as an outside salesman in West Texas, working around oil field equipment and mobile units.

From there, I moved to Dallas, and for three years I supervised the Publication Department and trained inside and new outside salesmen. After driving a desk for those three years, I asked the company to put me back into outside sales, and in 2001, I moved to East Texas and became an outside salesman. My customer base was steel and wood mills, foundries, and other manufacturing, which means I was selling industrial hydraulics components and systems to my customers. In 2010, after a short-term medical leave, I became the department leader for the hands-on training unit. I was given the task to expand the company’s product offering, and one of the things I did was develop a one-day safety seminar for fluid power. Working on that safety seminar reminded me of my first car—a 1965 Ford Mustang.

My dad purchased the brand-new Ford Mustang in August 1964. I was only three years old at the time, but that car has been part of my family, and I still own it. When Dad purchased that car, it didn’t have seat belts in the rear seat (my dad had those installed by the dealer).

Are you wondering why I’m talking about seat belts? Well, in 1964, seat belts (also called “safety belts”) were not required by national law, but some state laws required them. And seat belts were not required in the rear seat.

In fact, seat belts were not called “safety belts” because the automotive industry thought the name would put off the American public.

Pre-1964, there was an average of 44 fatalities per 100,000 registered cars, and that number dropped after 1967 to 1972 because more

states required seat belts in the cars. In 2011, that number dropped even more to 10.39 per 100,000 registered cars. Seat belts were invented in the early 19th century and have made cars and drivers safer, but the belts were not really used until 1955.

I know how it was in the early 1970s when the automotive industry started talking about air bags. My parents, like so many other people, were against them because of the extra expense and how they were viewed as dangerous. Seat belts were not any different back in the 1950s and 1960s, and the public had a hard time accepting them.

People are reluctant to change, and people also don’t like to be told what to do. Today, if you go into an automotive shop, you will mostly likely see a sign that says “Safety Glasses are Required.” In 1970, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was signed into law, which established the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA sets and enforces protective workplace safety and health standards, and one of those safety and health standards is to wear “Personal Protective Equipment” (PPE). OSHA tells us that PPE should be worn or used “wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation, or physical contact.” In 1985, I wish that the shop I worked for had required PPE, especially safety glasses, because my wife once had to take me to the emergency room at four a.m. to have a piece of metal removed from my eye. But even today, people are reluctant, or forget, to use safety glasses.

safety of unsolicited art, photographs or manuscripts.

There were 3-million work-related injuries in 2011, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statics, there were 4,693 fatal work-related accidents.

The sad part of that number is that there were 4,693 workers who didn’t go home to their families. The good thing about that number is it keeps falling year after year. In fact, in the last 20 years, that number has dropped by 1,500. In 1992, there were 6,217 fatal work-related injuries. One of the reasons that number has dropped is because the work force is using safer work practices and there is more regulation by organizations like OSHA. When I began working on the safety seminar for Womack, I found there wasn’t a lot of information on safety in fluid power. There are international standards ISO 4413 and ISO 4414, the titles to which are General Rules and Safety Requirements for Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems. But even though we have these safety standards on fluid power, do we use them?

Sometimes the reason that we don’t use these standards is because we don’t know about them.

We never stop learning, and every day I realize how much I don’t know. When I started working with fluid power, I had heard about oil injection injuries. It was always a friend’s uncle who knew someone’s dad who had a finger cut off by a hydraulic leak on an airplane’s hydraulic system. I figured oil injection injuries were an urban legend. As I researched information for the safety seminar, I confirmed that oil injection injuries do occur. Based on the size of the orifice or the leak size and how high the system’s pressure, oil could come out of the pinhole leak up to and surpassing 600 feet per second. That is the velocity of a 38 special bullet. Oil injection injuries do occur, and while they may not be very common, it is common for workers to use their hands to check for hydraulic or pneumatic leaks.

So, how are we safe around a fluid power system? Following the standards and regulations established by others is one way, but so is having the knowledge of how a system works and taking the time to make safety a number-one priority.

Today’s ongoing demand to get things done faster should not exclude the most important part of the job: Safety First! I urge you and your employees to be safe around fluid power equipment.

Energy costs and legislation trends At the time of this writing in late October 2013, the U.S. Energy Information Administration anticipates that by the end of the year, the United States will be the world’s premier producer of petroleum and natural gas hydrocarbons. This is good news in the short run, but global demand for fossil fuels will maintain upward pressure on energy costs. Demand primarily will be coming from a growing global middle class, which seeks the good life in terms of products, services, and energy. The United Nations reports the global middle class is expected to number 4.9 billion people by 2030, nearly triple today’s 1.8 billion. The global middle classes in China, India, and Brazil will propel their countries' economies to account for nearly half of world output by 2050.

With the growth of energy consumption and consequent increases in greenhouse gas emissions, governmental regulation will also increase.

The manufacturing operation that does not lower energy consumption and emissions today will be doing so tomorrow at a much higher cost.

Arthur Rosenfeld, nuclear physicist, formerly of the California Energy Commission, sums up the energy situation for businesses and individuals with these words: “The cheapest energy is what you don’t use.”

This article provides tips on decreasing the use of expensive energy in favor of the “cheapest” kind through the proper use of pneumatics.

That cheap energy goes right to the bottom line. Electric motors, interestingly enough, are the real energy hogs standing between high energy bills today and cheap energy tomorrow.

Electric Motors and Drive Systems (EMDS) According to the International Energy Agency, electric motors and drive systems (EMDS) are the largest single electricity end use, accounting for more than 40% of global electricity consumption. The agency states that 32% of EMDS used are attributed to compressors. Compressors, many of which are used for compressed air pneumatic systems, operate on average at only 5% to 10% efficiency.

This means that there is an enormous potential for energy saving. The International Energy Agency says in its report on motor-driven energy efficiency that “Huge energy-efficiency potential was found untapped in EMDS - around 25% of EMDS electricity use could be saved cost effectively, reducing total global electricity demand by about 10%.”

The Fraunhofer Institute, Munich, Germany, one of the largest application research organizations in the world, estimates that every production machine offers manufacturers the potential of a 15% energy savings. The following are tips for achieving that 15% savings through the proper use of pneumatic systems.

renaissance in pneumatic automation technology today is creating the most productive, efficient, and flexible pneumatic motion actuation ever achieved. At the same time, energy costs and environmental legislations are rising, which means that manufacturing organizations are looking for ways to decrease operating costs while minimizing impact on the environment. How do these energy and legislative trends mesh with the use of pneumatic systems?

Actually, they fit quite well. Pneumatic energy-saving strategies, as outlined in this article, decrease plant energy consumption and minimize overall carbon footprint of the facility. And proper management of these resources leads to additional bottom line improvements – lower acquisition cost of pneumatic components and systems, and faster ROI on those acquisitions. ENERGY SAVING STARTS AT THE TOP AND RELIES ON ALL-INCLUSIVE TEAMS.

The move to save energy must come from the highest levels of the organization. Only then will departmental barriers to effective action be lowered and all aspects of the organization come together over energy reductions. It may be a few passionate and knowledgeable middle managers/subject matter experts who make the case for action, but it is up to leadership to provide the mandate and the vision.

Organizations seeking greater energy efficiencies form all-inclusive motivated teams to work together to solve the energy usage problem. Team members represent • Purchasing • Design • Sales • Production • Maintenance • Logistics • Quality Interdisciplinary teams focus on shared understanding of common problems and look for ways of removing barriers to the solution of those problems.

Senior management can also take the step of adopting the ISO energy standard 50001. This standard calls for an energy manager, a person who can help interdisciplinary teams see the bigger picture, develop a company-wide framework, and help fix targets and objectives to meet policy guidelines.

Regardless of whether or not the organization is ready for an ISO 50001 effort, forming an all-inclusive team is foundational to the success of the effort.

TIP 2

BEGIN THE PROCESS WITH SIMULATION.

Begin the machine design and optimization process through simulation of pneumatic components. The leading pneumatics suppliers offer dimensioning software that supports efficiency through simulation. Proper dimensioning can result in approximately 40% less compressed air consumption and on average a 10% reduction in acquisition cost. When buying machines, the manufacturer should ask the OEM if the company performed dimensioning. If not, the machine may use unnecessary amounts of power.

Table 1 shows the results of a dimensioning simulation of an actuator moving 12 kg blocks of cheese 250 mm (10 in.) at 60 cycles a minute for 8 hours a day over 200 days. One actuator had a bore size of 40 mm (1½ in.) and the other 32 mm (1¼ in.).

SIMULATE MULTI-COMPONENT SYSTEMS.

Research and experience have shown that even greater savings can be achieved by properly dimensioning paired systems. The reason is the safety factor that is built into each component. Taken separately, the safety factors of individual components exceed that of comparable paired systems and add cost and complexity.

Festo compared a palletizing system for a 12-kg gear part moving 500 mm at 20 cycles during an 8-hour shift for 200 days. The results are given in Table 2.

ADD SENSORS.

Adding pressure, differential pressure, and flow sensors to a machine can increase efficiency of the machine by providing the monitoring capability that alerts operators to out-of-specified conditions, such as high air pressure or low airflow rate, both of which might indicate a leak. For example, if there is a leak, operators might turn up the pressure to compensate and waste energy in the process. Changes in differential pressure indicate filters need cleaning or replacement.

Clean filters ensure proper air flow, keep contaminates away from actuators, and help to prolong the service life and performance of valves and actuators.

TIP 5

ADD AN AIR-SAVING CIRCUIT TO VACUUM SYSTEMS.

Vacuum generation is an important tool in material handling. Vacuum is typically created using air flow through a venturi orifice. This is a process that consumes air. To make vacuum use more efficient, add an air-saving circuit. These circuits switch off air pressure when the required vacuum is achieved.

ADD VACUUM NOZZLES.

More savings can be achieved by replacing an expensive vacuum pump with less costly vacuum nozzles (Table 3).

TIP 7

ADD A PRESSURE BOOSTER WHEN HIGHER PRESSURE IS NEEDED.

Use a pressure booster if the application requires high pressure, such as a force fitting. This strategy eliminates the need to increase pressure at the compressor. The pressure booster raises pressure where and when it is needed as opposed to creating a higher demand on the compressor.

TIP 8

OPTIMIZE TUBING SYSTEMS.

Identify tubing systems, lengths, and diameters that, if changed, will result in savings. Long runs will be replaced by short ones wherever possible; small inner diameters replaced by correct dimensioning of pipe and hose diameters; cramped tube elbows will be replaced, as will unnecessary reductions, valves, and connectors. Wherever possible, closed circular pipelines will replace pipelines with dead ends.

One of the major improvements in pneumatic systems of the last several years has been the valve terminal, which allows valves to be located closer to actuators, thus shortening tube length. Table 4 shows an example of the kind of savings valve terminals offer by shortening runs.

The International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) has dedicated June 19 as “Fluid Power Professionals' Day” - a day of recognition for all of us who work in the fluid power field!

It has been said that fluid power is a “hidden giant” because it is so common in every aspect of our day-today existence that we have simply overlooked the obvious. There is not a vehicle, ship, plane, or train that can operate without fluid power. There is no consumer item, no electronic gadget, and no morsel of food we grow that can exist in enough quantity at a cost we can afford without the use of fluid power and our efforts.

From the ancient waterwheels of an emerging agrarian economy through the renaissance of industrial revolution to the automation and information technology age of today, we have worked to utilize, maintain, improve, and advance this all-encompassing technology. These efforts have improved productivity, ensured safety, and provided critical services that improve the quality of all of our lives. THANK YOU!

WHY JUNE 19TH? A little bit of history behind the date is interesting. Blaise Pascal—a French mathematician, inventor, writer, and physicist—was born on this day clear back in 1623. His work in hydrodynamics and hydrostatics, including the invention of the hydraulic press, paved the way for all future innovations.

He was also instrumental in experiments in pneumatics that examined the behavior of air in a vacuum and validated the work of the man who invented the barometer, Evangelista Torricelli. Because of Blaise Pascal and his work, the scientific foundation of thermodynamics and fluid power was set to build upon for those who followed.

• People with a Purpose – These submissions should depict fluid power professionals at work or working on fluid power equipment [e.g., a group shot of certified employees by the company sign, employees assembling or testing equipment (safety glasses required), a preview of activities you’re planning to celebrate on Fluid Power Professionals' Day].

• Power Density – These submissions should depict large pieces of equipment or the amazing power that can be achieved through fluid power systems (e.g., large tunnel boring equipment, the valves in a processing plant, descaling in a hot strip mill).

• Path of Least Resistance – These submissions could depict the conductors and connectors used in most fluid power systems or could depict the path a piece of equipment creates (e.g., hose, tubing, or pipe; a conveyor; road building).

• Fluid Power in Motion – These submissions should be action shots of fluid power (e.g., amusement rides, packaging, food processing, robotics, etc.). Both linear and rotary motion will be accepted.

The top five winners of the photo contest in each category will be published in the July/August issue of the Fluid Power Journal to help celebrate.

CELEBRATE THE DAY Wear emblems, pins, badges, and shirts noting your fluid power affiliation or organization. Plan a picnic. Demonstrate practical hydraulics to the kids with a squirt gun battle or just set up the sprinkler in the back yard. On your way to the beach, pool, or water park, note how many fluid power applications you can spot. Make this a special day in your life of day-to-day work in fluid power by taking the time to celebrate with your friends and colleagues in the industry. Remember that your efforts make all the difference.

he new Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI) GEMCO® 957S Series Brik™ Linear Displacement Transducer (LDT) from AMETEK Factory Automation is designed and built to offer accurate continuous-position feedback under demanding conditions.

The GEMCO 957S Brik™ is suited for process automation applications, providing reliability and durability regardless of the application environment. That includes shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, or exposure to contaminants. It is shock resistant to 1,000 Gs, vibration-resistant to 30 Gs, and is IP67 rated.

The fully digital LDT offers position indication with high resolution and precision repeatability. It overcomes the resolution and signal limitations of analog LDTs by offering up to 1-micron resolution and a stable position feedback for cable runs up to 1,200 feet from the host controller. Applications include lumber and forest products equipment; steel mills; primary and secondary metals processing, such as stamping, roll forming, and die casting; rubber and plastic injection molding; extrusion equipment; and material-handling machinery.

The LDT is easy to install and set up. It features the latest generation of magnetostrictive position-sensing technology. Numerous configurations are available to meet specific enduser requirements. The GEMCO 957A (analog), 957D (digital), and 957S (SSI) Brik™ LDTs offer an active measuring range of up to 180 inches and wide power supply voltages ranging from 7 to 30 VDC. Analog output units offer programmable zero and span.

GEMCO LDTs are known for their flawless performance in extreme environmental conditions, as well as their fast and accurate continuous linear position feedback. All units feature visual and output signal diagnostic feedback and utilize standard off-the-shelf cord sets for maximum value. A tri-color LED indicator verifies proper operation and distinct diagnostics for quick troubleshooting. Their low power consumption (1-watt typical) allows direct connection to displays and control interface modules.

The IFPS is able to offer these locations through its affiliation with The Consortium of College Testing Centers (CCTC) provided by National College Testing Association (NCTA).

To register for an IFPS written certification test: 1. Fill out an IFPS certification test application including your desired location by visiting www.ifps.org.

2. Submit your application with payment to IFPS headquarters.

NFPA Regional Meetings Coming to Minneapolis

ISO Graphical Symbols Available Online

NFPA has added a NEW regional meeting to its 2014 event schedule. For the first time, the Association will convene in Minneapolis—a true hub of the fluid power industry. On Tuesday, April 1, 2014, Hennepin Technical College—Eden Prairie Campus will host the inaugural NFPA Minneapolis Regional Meeting. Hennepin Technical College has one of the premier A.A.S. fluid power programs in the country. Instructor Ernie Parker and his students will provide an inside look at how they are creating the next generation of fluid power professionals.

NFPA regional meetings are free networking/educational events designed to bring together NFPA members and non-members. This meeting will be scheduled a few hours over lunch, so you don’t need to block your entire day. If you were planning on some customer visits in the Minneapolis area, we encourage you to fly in and attend the meeting.

Do you want to be sure that the fluid power graphical symbols you use every day are the latest and most accurate? The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) offers subscriptions to its graphical symbols collections via its Online Browsing Platform (OBP). Users can purchase a yearly subscription to have online access to either the entire collection or a subset of graphical symbols for use on diagrams, which includes the basic symbols that can be used to create fluid power graphical symbols in accordance with ISO 1219-1.

The symbols are downloadable as many times as necessary during the subscription period and available in either EPS or AI format. ISO ensures that the symbols are up to date, and the system allows potential customers to preview content.

International FPA Understanding NAICS Codes

by Eric Armstrong If you’re involved in manufacturing, there is a good chance you have or will encounter NAICS codes. Depending on your position, you may be, or will need to be, very familiar with these unique series of numbers. I thought I would share a brief overview of the NAICS codes for those interested in learning more.

WHAT ARE NAICS CODES? The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes are the identifying numbers used by the federal government to identify and classify companies by industry for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. Working with the United States’ counterparts from Mexico and Canada, the U.S. Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC) wanted to create common industry definitions for use across the three countries. NAICS replaced the now-obsolete Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system in 1997.

WHY USE NAICS CODES? NAICS codes help provide uniformity and comparability in the classification of business establishments and presentation of statistical data, so many statistical agencies (including most government agencies) use NAICS codes to collect/organize statistical data and generate reports.

Such a widely used classification system makes market analysis and data resource identification much easier and more representative.

HOW ARE NAICS CODES STRUCTURED? The NAICS numbering system employs a six-digit code at the most detailed industry level.

The first five digits are generally (although not always strictly) the same in all three countries.

The first two digits designate the largest business sector, the third digit designates the subsector, the fourth digit designates the industry group, the fifth digit designates the NAICS industries, and the sixth digit designates the national industries.

For example, lawn and garden equipment manufacturing would be NAICS code 333112. Here is the breakdown: 33 stands for Manufacturing.

333 stands for Machinery Manufacturing.

3331 stands for Agriculture, Construction, and Mining Machinery Manufacturing.

33311 stands for Agricultural Implement Manufacturing.

333112 stands for Lawn and Garden Equipment Manufacturing.

Global Manufacturing Update

January 10, 2014 – As we begin 2014, the global economy appears poised to grow stronger than it did last year. For only the second time since we have prepared this report, all top 10 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods were expanding, with Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) readings greater than 50. (The other time was last October.) As recently as September, just six of these nations were growing. Such progress suggests that weaknesses experienced over the summer months have begun to dissipate, and indeed, we have seen stabilization in both China and Europe since then.

The U.S. manufacturing sector has also begun to pick up, with sales and production accelerating from the third quarter forward. Moreover, the budget deal passed in December and negotiated by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) hopefully will avoid a potential

government shutdown until the fall of 2015—something that has helped ease some anxieties in the business community. Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has said that the improved outlook in the United States will allow the fund to revise its global growth prospects. In contrast, the IMF had downgraded its estimates for worldwide growth in the midst of October’s budget impasse. At that time, it predicted 3.6% growth in world output for 2014, down from 3.8% in its summer forecast.

The IMF will release its next World Economic Outlook by the end of January.

Despite progress on the international economic front, exports of U.S.-manufactured goods have continued to grow very slowly. Through the first 11 months of 2013, manufactured goods exports have risen just 2% relative to the same time frame in 2012. While the RBC Canadian Manufacturing PMI fell from 55.3 to 53.5, manufacturers in Canada have reported steady improvements in activity since contracting briefly in March. BY DAN PASCOE, GENERAL MANAGER, VACUFORCE, INC. Most industrial vacuum applications involve the picking up or transfer of products, such as vacuum pick-and-place or material conveying. This article discusses the effectiveness and cautionary notes to consider when these applications are employed in facilities that are located at altitude.

Vacuum can be defined in many ways: a volume devoid of matter, a volume comprised of a lower atmospheric pressure than that surrounding it, a space in which all or most of the “air” has been removed, etc. So the following explains and demonstrates what this actually means and how it relates to problems often experienced by factories using vacuum mechanics at higher altitudes.

Have you ever traveled on a plane and taken advantage of the socalled complimentary snack and beverage service—the tiny, fun-size pack of peanuts or indescribable dry, dusty, savory something or other that is supposed to tide you over until your destination? When presented with this snack, you’ll notice that the bag in which it has been packaged is inflated. The reason is very simple: food products are packaged near sea level in most cases, which for all intents and purposes has an atmospheric pressure between 13psi(a) and 14.7psi(a) depending on their location. Of course there are cities that have much lower atmospheric pressures, which we’ll get to later.

Commercial passenger planes have pressurized cabins. It is a common misconception that the cabins are pressurized to a “normal” atmospheric pressure [14.7psi(a)] during flight. This is not the case.

As the aircraft departs from the airport, the pressure on the inside of the aircraft is the same as that on the outside. As the aircraft starts to climb to a higher altitude, the cabin pressure attempts to maintain a constant pressure. Depending on the aircraft design, once the differential between the cabin and the outside of the aircraft reaches a certain level, such as 8 psi, the cabin air pressure starts to reduce, and as per the Federal Aviation Administration regulation, it settles at a pressure equivalent to about 8,000 feet above sea level, which is 10.91psi(a). This cabin pressure is now some 3.8-psi different to where the aircraft departed if the aircraft departed from a city close to sea level. Consequently, the snack packet has a higher pressure on the inside and expands accordingly.

You could argue that if the snack was packaged in a factory in Colorado, which has a very high elevation above sea level, then the internal pressure would be about 11.7psi(a), and therefore the differential at 8,000 feet above sea level would only be 0.8 psi. The packet would be less “inflated” than a similar product packaged in Los Angeles. In fact, it would look like it’s under vacuum when presented in Los Angeles due to the “higher-than-packaged” atmospheric pressure.

Fig. 1 shows a snack pack on an aircraft and chip bags stocked on shelves in Denver. As you can see, these packages were certainly packaged at a facility near sea level!

All interesting stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree. However, in industrial applications, altitude can have a significant effect on machine performance.

The end-of-arm tool shown in Fig. 2 utilizes an array of 140 vacuum cups of 40-mm diameter. At sea level, such as in Los Angeles, with a vacuum source generating 27"Hg (90% vacuum), these suction cups, used

together, can theoretically lift a load of 2,986 lbs (1,357 kg). The vacuum pump that is able to generate 27"Hg is still able to perform to the same absolute pressure wherever it is used. BUT the differential pressure, which is what defines the lifting force, will reduce at altitude. For example, in Denver, Co., the atmospheric pressure is about 11.78 psi(a) compared to Los Angeles, Calif., which is 14.7psi(a). Therefore, in Los Angeles, the differential pressure is 13.23 psi with a pump than can generate a 27"Hg vacuum level. In Denver, the differential would drop to 10.3 psi, a 22% reduction. Consequently, the tool shown in Fig. 2 will have a lifting capacity of 2,329 lbs (1,058 kg).

Now, it’s rare that a tool as shown in Fig. 2 is being used to its maximum lift capacity.

In a more realistic comparison, a 4" (100-mm) diameter cup being used in Los Angeles can lift 155 lbs (70 kg) with a pump capable of 27"Hg vacuum generation, whereas in Denver, the exact same vacuum cup can only lift 120 lbs (55 kg). This could be a real problem on a machine that has a low safety factor in its design.

Vacuum lifting relies on pressure differential.

In North America, the most common unit of measurement is inches of mercury ("Hg) as used in the aforementioned example. The problem with this unit of measurement is that it is a differential measurement taken from an assumed atmospheric pressure (sea level) where you have available the “whole” atmosphere. The table in Fig. 3 demonstrates the available differential pressure at different altitudes.

As shown in the table, the vacuum pump is able to generate a 90% vacuum, which is 100 mbar(a), 1.47psi(a), and in the case of inches of mercury, 29.92"Hg if measured at sea level.

The psi(a) and mbar(a) scales are both absolute measurements, and therefore, regardless of the atmospheric pressure, they both remain a constant, as their datum point of zero does not change. However, in the case of "Hg, this is a differential scale from full atmospheric pressure, which in Denver would not be applicable. To accurately measure a vacuum level, an absolute scale should always be used.

Using the vacuum pump, which generates a maximum of 100 mbar(a) as shown in Fig. 3, the available differential pressure available at sea level is 13.23 psi (14.7-1.47), whereas in Denver, the differential pressure would be much less at 10.31 psi (11.78-1.47). Consequently, vacuum cups have a lesser holding capacity in elevated installations.

Interestingly, vacuum cups have the highest lifting capacity on the shores of the Dead Sea in Israel, which is the lowest point on earth.

This area is 1,401 ft (427 m) below sea level. The average atmospheric pressure is 15.45psi(a).

Therefore, the 100-mm vacuum cup described previously will have a lifting capacity of 163 lbs compared to the 155 lbs it can lift in Los Angeles using a vacuum pump with a maximum vacuum level of 100 mbar(a).

Although the above numbers are real-world facts, they are rarely considered in machine design, and you could argue that it’s rare that they would need to be. However, there is manufacturing happening in high-altitude locations such as Denver, Colorado at 5,300 ft (1,610 m); Mexico City, Mexico at 7,350 ft (2,240 m); and Ankara, Turkey at 3,100 ft (938 m), to name but a few. Vacuum is a very common technology used in very common industries, such as food packaging, palletizing, box handling, material conveying, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and so on, all of which are found throughout the world and in use in every industrial arena.

What areas of growth or opportunity do you see developing in the domestic/international market?

ARENT: The Tier 4 emission control regulations are one of the most significant issues facing the mobile industry today.

Increased heat loads require larger cooling systems, and the addition of after-treatment components creates challenges in both design and cost. New cooling systems and controls will need to be applied to help achieve compliance.

HERSHBERGER: Machine builders continue to look towards technology to improve the total cost of ownership for customers. Continued approaches of implementing control schemes, including optimum transfer of available energy from the engine

utilizing electronics and electrohydraulic controls, will be the norm. Connectivity to the machine through remote diagnostics and machine-monitoring systems also are requested more. This technology has been available in the agriculture industry for years and will be further implemented with on-road and off-road machines. Import and export tax law continues to have an impact on the marketplace as many manufacturers and suppliers aim to “localize” product and machine supply. Machine builders will demand suppliers who will combine global supply chain strength and stronger local engineering, manufacturing resources, and application development.

THUN: In both the domestic and international markets, the focus is on making machines more productive and intelligent, thus substantially decreasing labor cost to the end user. By marrying hydraulics and electronics, we have the opportunity to increase market share. One area of concern is emerging markets. Do we have the products and production facilities to achieve their goals? We need to find an economical way to penetrate these new emerging markets as they develop.

&

How has the increased focus on energy efficiency affected the mobile market’s role in fulfilling customer requirements and designing equipment?

ARENT: Given the new emission control regulations, manufacturers are carefully reviewing the power requirements and in many cases, are reducing engine horsepower to better match the requirements of the equipment.

JANKOWIAK: In my part of the country, as well as in other areas, I see increased natural gas production as the largest growth market. The construction of gas well pad sites and pipelines has had a positive effect on the sales and rental of various mobile equipment types and models. I anticipate more electric power plants converting from coal to natural gas, which will stimulate growth in the gas market as it reduces the local demand for coal and, therefore, mining machinery. There is potential for an increase in coal exports, which would help increase employment as well as offset this country’s huge trade deficit. Government legislation, however, may not permit that mining to occur.

What government regulations do you see impacting the market?

ARENT: Tier 4 emission control regulations.

HERSHBERGER: The machine directive ISO13849 is having an impact on both the machine builder who is responsible for the availability and performance level of the machine in regards to operational hazards, risks, and safety, as well as the supplier in regards to providing reliability and time-to-failure information. While the Tier 4 engine emission regulations for many machines have already been addressed, there are still considerations and regulations that are planned for smaller engines.

This will have an impact on smaller machines in regards to maintaining performance and machine footprint while complying with the regulations.

THUN: Businesses sometimes unintentionally use government regulations as an excuse not to grow. My view is to thoroughly understand regulations affecting business areas, and then work to market, sell, and penetrate accordingly. In other words, I do not see government regulations as substantially impacting business or new product growth. The model for business should be “react immediately,” taking into account government regulations as opposed to using them as a crutch.

JANKOWIAK: The biggest regulatory impact I’ve seen in recent years is the government’s apparent, but denied, war on the coal industry. Government regulations have not only affected mining jobs directly, but many other large and small businesses and their employees also have been greatly affected by loss of business and jobs, as all the support people and supply chains to that industry suffer. In addition, the overall loss of business and jobs has a great effect on local economies in those areas where mining has been reduced or even eliminated. In a lot of small localities, coal mining is the only reason their entire communities exist.

HERSHBERGER: Energy efficiency, energy storage, energy on demand, emissions, and fuel consumption are all buzz words of the focus topics that must continue to be worked on in the mobile market. So creativity, mind shift, and effective, tried, and tested solutions that address these topics are not new. Suppliers and machine builders have been working through these final customers’ demands to assist them with the total cost of ownership of the mobile machines, and how one arrives at the solution is driving the innovation. One effective solution, for example, is a variable hydraulic fan drive in place of a fixed fan drive. The fan speed is no longer tied to the engine speed and can independently maintain temperature control of the engine coolant and recirculating exhaust gases, which must be kept in an operating range for optimal omission reduction. This system helps with fuel consumption, as well as diesel exhaust fluid expenditure, and helps to contain the cost of ownership.

At the same time, engineers, machine builders, and suppliers have to look at the efficient transfer of engine horsepower through hydraulics to drive the machine or provide effective movement of a function on the machine. This means that components must be designed for efficient transfer of energy while also considering the overall package size for reduction in weight or space on the machine. This again affects the overall cost of ownership to which the final customer is sensitive.

THUN: According to the NFPA, fluid power efficiency is around 22% nationwide.1 We can certainly do better than this! Our focus should be on recovering energy by improving our designs and focusing on efficiency by, for example, recommending proper hose sizing, component selection, and higher-pressure systems.

JANKOWIAK: The leading mobile equipment manufacturers are continuing to break new ground with electric and hydraulic hybrid dozers, excavators, and wheel loaders, which has resulted in new powertrain and other components, and new control systems that require higher-level, more capable technicians to keep them running. This industry has already been experiencing a shortage of finding new qualified employees to replace the aging workforce, and I expect this trend will only continue as more energy-efficient equipment is designed. Focused appropriate training at the manufacturer and equipment distributor level will need to increase in order to address the needs of the existing workforce. Colleges and technical schools may need to modify their curriculum in order to better match graduates with job knowledge requirements.

Some end users that try out some of this advanced technology equipment are not necessarily on board with the higher efficiency trend. Certainly all end users appreciate the idea of better fuel economy, but some seem to prefer increased performance and

more power over better fuel economy. End users also like proven technology, having a high respect for the reliability they’ve experienced and may be skeptical of the new technologies found in hybrids. High-tech hybrids offered in the marketplace are optional choices that may or may not be preferred and do tend to come with a higher price tag. As time passes, I expect that hybrid mobile equipment will prove to be reliable and economical in the long run regardless of higher initial investment.

Are there any new products/innovations that you foresee as game changers in the industry for 2014?

ARENT: Although variable speed fan drives have been on the market for years, they will be playing a more significant role in the future.

HERSHBERGER: The ongoing regulations will continue to be a key point for machine builders, engineers, and suppliers. As more technology is weaved into the design, the machine becomes more complex. The complexity and the regulations that force the machine builders and suppliers to provide performance and operation of the machine from a safe, reliable, available, and cost-effective level will become more cumbersome. What will be driving the products and innovations may not only be one of physical hardware. The game changer may very well be the ability to address these topics in machine design and in obtaining “real” data for failure time of the added components and systems.

THUN: The game changer will continue to be electronic control of machines. Additional work needs to be done to make these products more reliable, rugged, and easier to program. We in the fluid power industry should continue to work closely with the electronic industry to create more synergy in product designs. From what I have observed, the electronic world does not totally understand our needs. We need to form partnerships with the electronic industry to attack opportunities.

Another game changer revolves around the use of higherpressure components. I believe most mobile systems should be designed to operate at 5,000 psi or higher with enhanced filtration. Actuators can be smaller; hosing sizing and routing would be easier, and there would be a decrease in weight on the final design of machines. I support the long-term goal of the NFPA on components: half the weight and two times the power! With electronic control and higher-pressure systems, we would be getting closer to a perfect world in the mobile market—at least in my opinion.

JANKOWIAK: All mobile equipment manufacturers are required to meet Tier 4 Final engine emission standards beginning this year, which must be fully implemented by different published dates based on horsepower classes. Unlike a decision to invest in hybrid machinery or not, the new engine technologies are not optional. All manufacturers’ engines must meet rigorous emission standards required by Tier 4 Final regulations. Although new

to the mobile equipment world, these emission systems have been in use in highway truck applications for a few years, so buyers' perception regarding this technology is somewhat based on their exposure to the trucking industry.

Automatic controls using digital site plans and satellite-based GPS on mobile heavy machinery are not new, but have always been sold as aftermarket add-ons to end users’ new or existing equipment. Now one mobile equipment manufacturer, Komatsu, has automatic controls built into crawler tractors (commonly called “bulldozers”), which also have other advances in technologies not offered in aftermarket systems. These built-in mechatronic features offered by Komatsu lead to higher efficiencies, increased accuracy, and faster earth-moving production, while reducing the time needed to complete an earth-moving job, reducing maintenance, fuel consumption, and other operating costs, including less operator and survey man hours needed.

This machine is a combination of mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, computer, and GPS-engineered systems automatically working together to provide higher productivity and lower operating costs.
