beach brides Dreaming of an outdoor wedding by the sea? Here are some rules and regulations you need to know.

Myrtle Beach Myrtle Beach has the strictest rules when it comes to getting married on the beach. Commercially produced weddings are not allowed, but non-commercial weddings are permitted. Commercially produced weddings are when you pay for any of your services, including wedding planners, photographers or officiants. For more information, go to www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com. North Myrtle Beach North Myrtle Beach has very few restrictions on beach weddings. The city’s one requirement is that any paid professionals at the wed-

ding have a North Myrtle Beach business license. For more information, go to http://www.nmb.us Surfside Beach, Pawleys Island Surfside Beach is the most lenient of the group concerning beach weddings. Chairs and tents are banned, and the ceremony is not to disturb fellow beach-goers. Chairs are allowed on Pawleys Island, but they must be removed from the beach immediately following the wedding. Huntington Beach State Park The state park allows weddings on the beach and in the historic Atalaya Castle. The castle is available after park hours beginning in March and ending in October. You are free to choose your own catering, decorations and other details. The cost is $2,400, which includes two large courtyards, indoor and outdoor studios, several smaller courtyards, restrooms and the park admission of your wedding party and guests. A special permit application must be filled out. For more information, go to www.southcarolinaparks.com/ huntingtonbeach/faq/ Lastly, one of the most important things to consider when planning a beach wedding is when the tides are low and high. Ideally, the perfect time for a wedding is close to low tide. For the daily schedule of high and low tides, go to www. sciway.net/weather/tides.html

any couples dream of a beach wedding, and the Grand Strand has some of the most beautiful in the world. But before you plan that lavish outdoor event, you’ll need to know the rules and regulations for beach weddings. For all weddings, a marriage license is required. Licenses are issued at the Horry County Probate Court Office in Conway in the County Courthouse at 1301 Second Ave. Marriage licenses are issued between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. To receive a marriage license, you’ll need to file the application; file a statement, under oath or affirmation, that the persons seeking the contract of matrimony are legally entitled to marry, together with the full names of the persons, their ages and their places of residence; pay the appropriate fee; and observe the

(Clockwise from right) ABOUT THE BOWS: Carrie Tomchik loves bows and wanted it reflected in her wedding to Mark Passaro. Coccadots created this five-tier cake with alternating flavors. IT’S A BROWNIE: Jessica Marshall doesn’t really like cake, so for her wedding to Will Cutler she worked with Crady’s Eclectic Cuisine to create five different flavors of brownies, which were uniquely displayed on beautiful vases. Flavors included cheesecake, peanut butter and raspberry chocolate (pictured). SIMPLE ELEGANCE: For Juliemar Gonzalez’s wedding to David Furr, they chose to feature the burlap that was used in their wedding decor. Cakes by the Sea delivered the cake of their dreams.

(this page, clockwise from top) FLAVORS FOR EVEYONE: Elegant, Hollywood, yet not overstated is what Wendy Lee Smith and Fran Sauvageau had in mind for their cake. Lemon blueberry, raspberry white chocolate and carrot cake were the flavors of Cupcakes by Cravinley’s masterpiece. INVITATION INSPIRATION: For Jasmin Plowden and Prince Corley’s wedding, the black damask design and the gold color on their invitation provided the inspiration. Gold bows were used throughout the reception and the bride wanted a gold bow on her cake. The skirt of her dress had a scalloped design which inspired the scallops on the small cakes. The black rhinestone center column and trim added the perfect touch of bling. Incredible Edibles designed this truly unique cake. RED VELVET STUNNER: Each rose petal was individually placed to create a beautiful large rose on this Incredible Edibles cake for Alexis Gentle and Scott Dominick. The cake flavor was sour cream red velvet and the layers were ombre style from deep rich red velvet to soft pink red velvet. SOUTHERN PEARLS: For Leslie Thompson’s Southern-themed wedding to Daniel Bland, what says southern more than pearls? Croissants Bistro & Bakery created this beauty and used the lace from her dress as an inspiration for the piping on the top of the cake.

aving grown up in South Carolina, Leslie Ann Thompson wanted her wedding to Daniel Bland Williams to highlight the beautiful Lowcountry surroundings in Murrells Inlet and the pair’s unique interests in traveling and visiting wineries. To complement the rustic beauty of Wachesaw Plantation, the couple chose soft sea mist and ocean blue hues and used Lowcountry-themed natural accents like driftwood, wicker, distressed glass, white and pastel flowers and soft sage-colored succulents. Their love of traveling the world and visiting wineries was also a major theme of the wedding. Rather than using numbers, they named each table after places they'd been, with custom wine bottles featuring photos from their trips.

hose who know Wendy Lee Smith will tell you that she has a love for Cinderella. For her wedding to Fran Sauvageau on October 5, 2013, at Brookgreen Gardens, she wanted to have glamour for groom Fran, while still capturing her own whimsical style. They chose gray dresses for the bridesmaids so that the beauty of the flowers and of the venue would do the work. The groom and best man wore morning frock tails and top hats. And because Wendy is admittedly not the most graceful, her husband-to-be surprised her with two flower girls—one who carried Wendy’s shoes on a silver platter and one who rang little bells. Decorations included aisles that were marked with lanterns on shepherd hooks. Five custom-made chandeliers were hung in the reception tent, and custom flower stands were filled with huge arrangements. Tables were adorned with crystal vases that were lit from within and had flowers that matched the flowers matching those featured in the bouquet and the ceremony site. To make sure all of their guests could indulge in their wedding cake, Cupcakes by Cravinley’s also provided a mini version of their cake, which was sugar-free. Event planner Leslie Menich was instrumental in helping Wendy and Fran have the wedding of their dreams.

DETAILS, DETAILS: (Clockwise from top) The reception tent had five custom-made chandeliers and was draped and uplit with changeable lighting. Fran surprised Wendy with two flower girls. Aisles were marked with lanterns on shepherd hooks. The bridesmaids wore muted colors as to not take away from the beauty of Brookgreen Gardens. Opposite page: A mini, sugar-free version of the couple’s wedding cake was prepared and served so all guests could enjoy a slice of cake.

The seating assignments were golf balls on tees placed in cigar boxes filled with home grown wheat. Guests were sent home with Dominican coffee in burlap sacks adorned with “love has brewed.” The caffeineinspired favor came from coffee’s impact on the cigar industry. Vases filled with fresh limes covered with white hydrangeas made for simple centerpieces, and an ornate white chalkboard that posted the attendants of the wedding added a chic touch.

ake a deep breath, survey those around you, walk down the aisle and just be excited to start that chapter in your life,” Alison Cassidy says, in confident advice to nervous brides. She knows a thing or two about the deeper meaning behind the veil of cake and flowers on a wedding day. “I mean, my cake started to melt and we lost the top tier, but all anyone said after is how delicious my cake was,” she adds with a laugh. It’s when your groom has survived stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma and rounds of chemotherapy during your courtship that you see your Big Day in a new perspective. That, and when your mom is diagnosed with uterine cancer during your wedding planning. (Both are miraculously cancerfree today.) “That really helped me when planning the wedding because it’s so easy to get wrapped up and focused on the small things,” says Alison. “What was important was the covenant we were making before God and our friends and family. And it helped my mom to take her focus off of her sickness. She’s the strongest woman I know.” Alison, 27, and David, 28, met in 2010 at a Christian youth festival in town and have been hanging out ever since. She is a Myrtle Beach native, while he was raised in Pennsylvania before migrating south. “He was just so much fun to be

around, and I wasn’t necessarily looking for anyone,” she recalls. “When we found out he had cancer, friends were asking me, ‘Are you sure you want to get involved in this?’ It didn’t scare me in the least. Our relationship grew in a natural progression.” Which then progressed into a romantic proposal in Paris on January 14, 2013, when she and David returned to the city where she worked at a fashion press company for a year after graduating from University of South Carolina with a degree in fashion merchandising. The “City of Love” embraced the couple in love on a famous bridge spanning the Seine which is adorned with hundreds of tiny padlocks left by passersby. “As we got closer, he told me the story of how couples come to the bridge to lock their love together forever,” says Alison. “So we signed our lock with our names and the year, locked it on the bridge and threw the keys away in the Seine. As if that didn’t melt my heart enough, he then took me to the middle of the bridge, got on one knee and asked me to marry him.” Alison and David’s future was forever sealed with a kiss on their wedding day on September 21, 2013, at Pine Lakes Country Club in Myrtle Beach. “I wasn’t necessarily the dreamer growing up,” says Alison. “I didn’t make a scrapbook of what I wanted my wedding to be like. But I did know I wanted it to be at Pine Lakes because I feel it’s the epitome of Southern style. I love the South and being from the South.” However, as a fashion stylist, she did put her foot down on the particulars of her wedding gown. Purchased at Little White Dress, Alison’s dress was stitched in perfection. “I love lace and love it as a silhouette, so I wanted something that accentuated the lace line and was very feminine, very soft and delicate,” she says. “But I didn’t want strapless– something comfortable so when I was

dancing and hugging everyone, I didn’t have to yank at it.” Other musts for Alison were sprays of Southern-grown hydrangeas, garden roses and a Southern standard on the menu: shrimp and grits, which was dished out at a station, along with another station of carved meats and one allowing guests to make their own grilled cheese sandwiches, complete with gourmet cheeses, bacon and more. “We wanted dinner to be fun for everybody, to mingle around,” she says, “not a sit-down dinner where you sit with someone you don’t know.” The cake, lovingly baked by a friend, mirrored the lace of Alison’s dress on the outside; inside, it was stuffed with sumptuous layers of red velvet with chocolate fudge, vanilla almond, pink lemonade and the newlyweds’ choice, chocolate peanut butter with Nutella filling. Alison’s classic Southern wedding continued across the reception tables, which were garnished with vintage jewelry, family china, vases, picture frames, books and tiny iron birdcages. Personal touches were woven into moments like a heart-shaped balloon released at the ceremony in honor of David’s younger sister, who passed away two years ago. David’s father, a Baptist preacher in Boston, officiated the ceremony. And, just for the fun of it, the couple and wedding party broke into a rowdy Gamecocks-cheering, towel-waving interlude during the first formal dance. Alison, a fashion stylist, and David, a financial advisor, live happily ever after in Myrtle Beach.

Southern Glam:The outdoor majesty of the DeBordieu courtyard combined with the elegance of the clubhouse made the Jones’ wedding day breathtaking.

Time can either drive a wedge between two who have crossed paths or act as a bonding catalyst. And when love is involved, expect to not only be bound, but knocked off your feet and left a little breathless with a heart full of happiness. Brittney Farish and Justin Jones dated for nine years before finally becoming Mr. and Mrs. Jones on October 12, 2013. As fellow students in Mrs. French’s art class in Socastee High School, the two went on their first date in 2003, followed by time and distance in colleges in Charleston and Columbia, law school and a return to their hometown. “I know it sounds simple, but we just always enjoyed being around one another,” says Brittney. “We wanted to make sure we stayed together.” Justin made that even clearer on a surprise getaway to Charleston, where the original plan was to propose to Brittney during a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride. But Mother Nature instead swept through the streets, putting a damper on Plan A. Enter Plan B, in which he got down on one knee under the shelter of the front porch of St. Phillips Church. Cue church bells and a resounding, “Yes!” The bride-to-be didn’t waste time planning her special day, which was held outdoors on the circular lawn of the courtyard at DeBordieu Colony Clubhouse near Pawleys Island. “I’d always envisioned my wedding to be classic and Southern—a warm feel,” says Brittney, an attorney in Myrtle Beach. “I guess Southern could go either the way of country or glamorous, but I went with the latter. Plus, we wanted our family from out of town to experience true Southern hospitality and flair.” Flair was witnessed in the form of Southern coastal flora at its finest, with a lovely live oak altar and flowing orchids, all framed by gilded lettering from 1 Corinthians 13. The colors of the day were a sparkling duo of silver and gold amidst blush pink accents. A string trio strummed the ceremonial soundtrack. Brittney’s gown was picturesque, featuring a cathedral-length train of organza ruffles and a veil adorned with Swarovski crystals that twinkled in the late afternoon sun. She carried a bouquet of ivory garden

roses with blush pink peonies and anemones. Her “something old” and “something blue” was a patch of satin from her mother’s dress, embroidered in blue with the wedding date and couple’s names, then sewn into the skirt of Brittney’s gown. Her “something borrowed,” explained by Brittney’s mother, was a ring taken from her grandmother’s finger just before her walk down the aisle. Old family Bibles were another set of “borrowed” contributions, upon which the ring bearers carried the rings. The Bibles were also decorated with silk flowers from the bride’s mother’s veil. After the “I do’s,” the celebration continued inside the clubhouse, where cocktail hour served up Oysters Rockefeller, barbecue pork sliders and more Southern comforts. Dinner was a formal affair, complete with silver-draped tables topped with gold chargers and flatware and gold boxes filled with the bride and groom’s favorite chocolates in the shape of seashells. Entertainment followed into the night, with the dance floor bouncing to the beat of the band Tru Sol. “It was such a special day,” says Brittney. “And I challenge brides to use every part of the planning as a reason to celebrate. I mean, include all of your wedding party, future in-laws, your family. … When my bridesmaids dresses came in, we had the fitting and had champagne, so it was fun instead of it feeling like a planning task.” Brittney and Justin Jones, both 27, are still having fun living it up together in Murrells Inlet.

His bride, Betsy Britt, was in a bad car accident in 2010, when a truck ran a red light and slammed into her car, leaving her with a serious closed head injury and two years of health issues, including daily migraines. She was only given clearance from her doctors to return to work in September 2013. “Sweet, sweet Macon has been there for her the entire time,” relays Betsy’s mother, Susan. “He has seen her at her worst and lowest points and has been there to see her out of it.” “Macon is a true-blue friend … so loyal and dependable,” Betsy agrees. She says that along with Macon, their black lab Bailey, her family and the beach are her greatest loves in life. Macon, born and raised in Conway, and Betsy, hailing from Spartanburg, met in her hometown while he was a student at Wofford College and she was in high school, working at the Sugar-n-Spice drive-in restaurant. Years later, the two bumped into each other again—this time in Columbia in the elevator of the Bank of America Plaza building, where they both happened to work. “It was my first day of work in a new building and I was trying to remember what floor I was supposed

He asked me out on a date and I thought he was really cute and had a great time, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be in a relationship just yet. … I remember I would get butterflies when I would bump into him and that had never happened before.” Butterflies over Macon, the cute guy, evolved into “I do’s” with Macon, her betrothed, on one fine spring day at Brookgreen Gardens, one of her favorite places on Earth. “I grew up going to the beach, and as a child my parents and grandparents would take us to Brookgreen,” says Betsy. “… Macon’s grandparents lived in Murrells Inlet and his grandfather was very involved at Brookgreen and would always take him there growing up. This area means a lot to both of us and it was the perfect fit!” Betsy’s blissful memories at the beach were swept throughout the couple’s ceremony in the Live Oak Alee and the tented reception in the Pegasus garden—from the cross of shells standing tall in witness over the nuptials, to a sketch of oyster shells intersecting in a cross on the wed-

Even though Juliemar and David went to high school together, they didn’t meet until years later at a dinner with mutual friends. David proposed on the couple’s eight-year anniversary while celebrating David’s father’s birthday over ice cream with family. The ceremony was held at Tilghman Boyce Cottage in North Myrtle Beach. The couple hand made many elements of their wedding, and in honor of David’s proposal, they had an ice cream bar for guests to enjoy. The two now call North Myrtle Beach home.
