BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The benefits of IBWA membership to suppliers are well-known: access to key decision makers at IBWA bottler member companies, vendor showcase opportunities at annual business meetings, free participation at tabletop trade shows held during the February and June committee and board meetings, increased exposure to potential clients through special presentation events, listings in the membership roster and the online and print buyers’ guides (like this issue of Bottled Water Reporter), and discounted advertising rates—just to name a few. So, what do our supplier members do for IBWA? Our supplier members provide value to IBWA by not only producing great products for, and providing crucial services to, our bottler members but also by participating in all IBWA activities. Through their active involvement, supplier members provide bottlers with industry insight they can use to help grow their businesses. As supplier members have mentioned, the issues faced by their bottler colleagues also affect them. Thus, they actively participate at IBWA meetings and tradeshows to further understand the challenges bottlers have to overcome to be a success. If you take a look at the IBWA committee rosters, you’ll see many of our supplier members are charged with some heavy lifting at the committee level, providing a perspective that benefits all IBWA members. Bottlers are forever discovering new ways to connect with and help their customers because of supplier member participation. By joining IBWA or renewing their memberships, supplier members demonstrate their commitment to helping the association achieve its goals. Supplier members recognize IBWA can only be successful if all members—suppliers, bottlers, and distributors—work together. It is through those established industry relationships that members of IBWA are able to advance and strengthen the bottled water industry as a whole. I’d like to present a challenge to IBWA bottler members that do business with suppliers that have yet to join IBWA. The next time you meet with those suppliers, as you do with other bottlers, please take a moment to let them know about the benefits of an IBWA membership—and tell them about the many positive exchanges you’ve had with current IBWA suppliers. Attracting more supplier members will help us build a stronger association, which can only translate into more resources and the ability to further extend the reach of IBWA. BISPHENOL-A

FDA Confirms Safety of BPA On March 30, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revised its consumer update “Bisphenol A (BPA): Use in Food Contact Application,” which was originally issued in January 2010. According to this latest update, “FDA’s current assessment is that BPA is safe at the very low levels that occur in some foods. This assessment is based on review by FDA scientists of hundreds of studies including the latest findings from new studies initiated by the agency.” Since publishing its January 2010 BPA update, FDA has been continuing to work on BPA issues and concerns: • FDA took reasonable steps to reduce human exposure to BPA in the food supply, including supporting industry actions to stop producing BPA-containing baby bottles and infant feeding cups for the U.S. market, facilitating the development of alternatives to BPA for the linings of infant formula cans, and supporting efforts to replace BPA or minimize BPA levels in other food can linings. • FDA supported a shift to a more robust regulatory framework for oversight of BPA. • FDA continues to seek public comment and external input on the science surrounding BPA. Previously on March 30, 2012, FDA released an announcement rejecting “a petition from environmentalists [the Natural Resources Defense Council] that would have banned the plastichardening chemical bisphenol-A from all food and drink packaging, including plastic bottles and canned food.” 6

BWR

FDA’s current assessment is that BPA is safe. In reference to the studies mentioned by the NRDC that indicate BPA could be potentially harmful to humans, FDA said in its announcement, “While evidence from some studies have raised questions as to whether BPA may be associated with a variety of health effects, there remain serious questions about these studies, particularly as they relate to humans.” Because of concerns expressed in the last few years about the safety of BPA, FDA initiated its studies to help determine whether BPA is safe as it is currently used in food packaging and containers. Some of those studies have been completed and others are ongoing. FDA’s studies are being conducted by the agency’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR). All studies are conducted under strict qualityassurance guidelines and are designed to produce information that will enhance FDA’s evaluation of BPA’s safety. Thus far, the results from the new studies support FDA’s assessment that the use of BPA in food packaging and containers is safe. To read FDA’s revised consumer update on BPA, visit http://bit.ly/ FDAUpdateBPAisSafe. The update

provides further details about FDA’s additional BPA studies, interim public health recommendations, the regulatory framework of BPA, and next steps for FDA’s assessment of BPA.

PARTNERSHIPS

IBWA Sponsorship of Curbside Value Partnership Yields Results On March 21, 2013, Waste & Recycling News announced during the closing ceremonies of its Residential Recycling Conference that the City of Columbus (Ohio), a partner of the Curbside Value Partnership (CVP), was the winner of the Green City Award for large markets. The award honors municipalities’ recycling programs for their diversion successes, community outreach, and educational efforts. The City of Columbus received the award following the successful launch of its new residential recycling service called RecyColumbus (www.RecycleColumbus. org). More than 60 communities were nominated for the award, including CVP partner Atlanta for its successful city-wide recycling program, Cartlanta. RecyColumbus was launched in 2012 in conjunction with the city’s bicentennial. The campaign engaged residents with a wide range of activities. Recognizing the power of peer-to-peer communications, especially when marketing the social behavior of recycling, the campaign recruited more than 100 resident volunteers, presented close to 300 times, and participated in countless events.

Campaign success can be measured in several ways. The city had a goal to keep cart refusals under 10 percent. After all carts were distributed, the cart refusal rate was less than 2 percent. In addition, as of February 1, 2013—nine months after the program began—the new program had collected 12,941,08 tons of recyclables and saved the city $717,749.94 in tipping fees. IBWA is a sponsor of the CVP, a national nonprofit organization that works to increase participation and tonnage collected in residential curbside recycling programs through grassroots education campaigns that reach and motivate consumers. CVP also uses ongoing data analysis to help accurately measure success. As part of its commitment to reduce the environmental footprint of the bottled water industry, IBWA is pleased to see that CVP’s initiatives are garnering successful recognition for efforts to improve recycling rates for bottled water and all consumer packaging. For more information about CVP, visit www.recyclecurbside.org.

BACK SAFETY: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW By Adele L. Abrams, Esq., CMSP

Back injuries can be a major cause of lost time, medical expense, and worker’s compensation claims in the bottled water industry. Risk factors are involved in both the manufacturing and delivery aspects of the industry, and, while some injuries, such as minor strains, may heal quickly on their own, other types of back problems can be extremely painful and may result in permanent disability. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states that “back strain due to overexertion represents one of the largest segments of employee injuries in the American workplace. Only the common cold accounts for more lost days of work.” In addition, the National Safety Council has stated that overexertion is the cause of about 31 percent of all disabling work injuries. Therefore, it is critical to understand what acts can cause or contribute to back strain and how to train workers to reduce their risks.

APRIL/MAY 2013

BWR

11

WHILE A MAJORITY OF U.S. BOTTLED WATER COMPANIES ARE VERY SMALL, THEY ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM COMPLIANCE WITH OSHA REGULATIONS. Occupational back injuries are often related to the longterm effects of doing a job, such as those involving heavy physical work, awkward postures required to do a job, jobs involving whole body vibration (such as operating vibrating tools or improperly fitted seats in mobile equipment such as delivery trucks) and working in “static postures” where the worker holds a position for an extended period of time. The repeated bending and stretching often observed in bottled water delivery operations, as well as maneuvering handtrucks over curbs or in situations involving stairs (which can also strain backs), are the types of movements that can take their toll on a worker’s back. OSHA notes that, from an ergonomic perspective, the typical beverage delivery person performs the following tasks on a daily basis: •

Driving a pre-stocked route truck from the plant to designated customers.

Unloading the various cases of beverages from the truck. This consists of lifting approximately 160-550 boxes, beverage cases, and/or coolers piece-by-piece from the truck and placing them on a handtruck.

Wheeling the handtruck to the point of delivery specified by the customer.

Manually unloading the handtruck and placing products on display shelves or in storage areas.

Retrieving empty returnable bottles.

Specifically, a water delivery person commonly delivers 3- and 5-gallon bottles of water (the majority of the bottles are 5-gallons) to a variety of residential and commercial customers. A typical water bottle weighs 12

BWR

approximately 48 pounds. They may also deliver cases of smaller bottles of water (single-serve) that can be awkward to carry safely and can put further strains on the back. The larger, reusable, water bottles are placed in square individual crates so they can be stacked on pallets within the bays of the truck. Consequently, stretching and straining may result while retrieving the cargo from the truck and maneuvering it into the delivery location, as well as when placing recyclable bottles back into the vehicle. Besides the costs of worker’s compensation and loss of a trained worker on a temporary or permanent basis, back injuries can cost employers money in other ways too. Workplace hazards that can result in back injuries—when they are attributable to ergonomic hazards—are subject to OSHA citations under the General Duty Clause of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Section 5(a)(1), which requires each employer to furnish a workplace “free from recognized hazards” that cause or are likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. Fines for such violative ergonomic conditions can reach $70,000 per citation, and, in egregious OSHA cases, can total $70,000 per affected worker. So, if 10 workers are potentially adversely affected by poor work practices or inadequate training, the fine could be $700,000. While a majority of bottled water companies in the United States are very small (10 employees or less), they are not exempt from compliance with OSHA regulations.

Designed to Prevent Injury OSHA’s recommended approach to preventing back injuries is to eliminate the hazardous condition in the workplace, primarily through engineering controls, such as mechanical assists; adjustment of the height of the surface from which or to which material is lifted; or elimination of unnecessary bending or twisting in the task through workstation and equipment design. The second approach after engineering controls are exhausted or found to be infeasible are administrative controls, which could include job redesign or rotation of workers to limit the amount of time in a workday that an employee performs a repetitive task, which can reduce injuries due to cumulative trauma or repetitive stress. Training workers on proper lifting methods and training supervisors to recognize when workers are “doing it wrong” is also a significant factor in mitigating back problems. After engineering and administrative controls are exhausted, employees can turn to personal protective

BACK SAFETY

equipment, but this is a controversial area when it comes to back safety. Some companies permit, or even require, employees whose tasks involve heavy lifting, stretching, or straining, to wear back belts. The jury is still out on the effectiveness of those devices, and OSHA neither requires nor outlaws their use. However, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which provides OSHA with research on injury trends and prevention, has evaluated the utility of back belts in the workplace in a research paper focusing on material handlers in manufacturing, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. NIOSH concluded that elastic support back belt use was not associated with reduced incidence of back injuries or lower back pain. Other findings from the NIOSH study include the following: •

There was no statistically significant difference between the rates of back injuries among workers who wore back belts every day and workers who never wore back belts or wore them no more than once or twice a month.

There was no statistically significant difference between the incidence of self-reported back pain among workers who wore back belts usually every day (17.1 percent) and the incidence of self-reported back pain among workers who never wore back belts or wore them no more than once or twice a month (17.5 percent).

There was no statistically significant difference between the rate of back-related workers’ comp claims in stores requiring the use of back belts and the rate in stores where back belt use was voluntary.

TIPS FOR REDUCING EMPLOYEE BACK INJURIES • If work requires the employee to stand for extended periods, he or she should avoid leaning forward to work. • When working with heavy objects, the employee should be trained to keep them at waist level, and the work station should be designed to facilitate that action. • Lighter work can be performed slightly higher than waist level. • Workers should face work “straight on” and avoid continuous twisting. • Employees should alternate tasks and postures, to the extent feasible, so the work day includes tasks that require sitting, standing, or even working with a foot elevated to change stress factors on the back. • Even simple steps like avoiding keeping a wallet in the back pants pocket can help by eliminating extra stress on the back and nerves.

APRIL/MAY 2013

BWR

13

NIOSH also found that a history of back injury was the strongest risk factor for predicting either a back-injury claim or reported back pain among employees, regardless of back-belt use. The rate of back injury among those with a previous history of back pain was nearly twice as high as the rate among workers without a previous history of back pain. Moreover, even in the most strenuous types of jobs, comparisons of back injury claims and self-reported back pain failed to show any differences in rates or incidence associated with back belt use. (Visit http://bit.ly/NIOSHbacksafety to download “Workplace Use of Back Belts” by NIOSH.) Another NIOSH study resulted in development of a mathematical model that helps predict the risk of injury on the basis of the weight being lifted by a worker and accounts for many confounding factors. The model is

based on previous medical research into the compressive forces needed to cause damage to bones and ligaments of the back. NIOSH has shown through research that a lifting index greater than 3.0 can clearly be linked to an increased risk of back and other injuries. The applications manual for the NIOSH lifting index is published at http://bit.ly/NIOSHlifting.

Hiring Practices and Back Injuries Because those with a history of back injuries may be at elevated risk, an employer may be tempted to simply eliminate them from the pool of prospective employees. Therefore, a caveat is in order: An employer cannot refuse to hire someone because he or she has had previous back injuries that resulted in worker’s compensation claims against the company (or against a former employer) as that would violate the anti-retaliation provisions of most states’ worker’s compensation statutes. In addition, persons with chronic back problems may be covered by the Americans

BEST PRACTICES FOR BOTTLED WATER DELIVERY PERSONNEL The following work practices may be helpful in minimizing risks of back injuries for bottled water delivery personnel: • For the task of placing water bottles at ground level or on a handtruck, the employer can provide a handle at the top of the bottle near the water release nozzle to allow employees to lower the bottle without placing either of the hands on the bottom. That should reduce the amount of torso bending needed during the lowering process. The company can also educate employees on the basics of body biomechanics and the importance of maintaining the back in an ergonomically neutral position. Generally, the torso should not bend more than 6 to 10 degrees from vertical. • When faced with the need for elevated lifting, employers should strive to reduce the distance employees must reach to access bottles. The arms should be bent and kept in close to the body. Eliminate the fifth row of bottles if at all possible. Reaches should be limited to no more than 16 to 17 inches horizontally, and the hands should not need to be raised above head height to remove items from the truck. • Where truck design makes extended reaches necessary, try to use two employees who are using proper lifting techniques to reduce the hazard of most lifts. An articulated arm or other lifting mechanism can also assist in lowering and positioning heavy objects. • Bottle racks can be provided to customers at the delivery site, permitting bottles to be stored at ergonomically desirable heights. It makes sense to store empty bottles at the top and bottom, with full bottles in the middle shelves. For more, visit http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/beverage/water_delivery.html.

A QUALIFIED ERGONOMIST CAN OFTEN BE A VALUABLE ASSET WHEN CONDUCTING A WORKPLACE ANALYSIS.

with Disabilities Act (ADA), depending on whether the back condition limits the worker’s major life activities, or even where it does not but the employer regards the worker as disabled. The employer should not ask any applicant or employee if they have a disability, but, if the worker self-reports a back condition, the employer can describe the job and ask if the employee or applicant can do the job’s essential functions either with or without “reasonable accommodation.” What constitutes a “reasonable accommodation” will vary depending on the size and resources of the employer, but it could involve such things as re-engineering a workstation to raise or lower equipment or work tables to minimize bending and stretching. A qualified ergonomist can often be a valuable asset when conducting a workplace analysis that can benefit not just the disabled worker but others as well, by preventing future injuries.

Best Practices What are some solutions? BLR.com reports that one company used a safety team to reduce employee back injuries by 57 percent and lower related workers’ compensation costs by 71 percent by first identifying specific causes of the injuries, then developing ways to avoid them—primarily by substituting mechanical devices for manual lifting. Thus, one approach would be to encourage employees to use mechanical devices—handtrucks, conveyors, pneumatic lifts, etc.—whenever possible, instead of their own arms, legs, and backs to lift and carry heavy objects. Workers 16

BWR

should also be trained to stretch often and vary positions to decrease back fatigue. OSHA has published an eTool concerning beverage delivery, including bottled water, which is available free of charge at http://bit.ly/OSHAergonomics. It provides recommendations for good industry practice that often go beyond specific OSHA mandates, and, while it does not add any new requirements, it should be examined carefully because any risk factors that an employer identifies through the use of an eTool that are not already addressed by specific OSHA standards can be enforced via the General Duty Clause. By getting “back to basics” on back safety, and incorporating good transportation and storage system design and safe work practices that reflect a recognition of—and control for—common ergonomic hazards, employers will save money on lost-time injuries and compensation costs and workers will have something even more valuable—a healthy back!

” “

Know Before You Go Avoiding the Pitfalls of “Felix the Citizen Lobbyist” By James Toner, IBWA Director of Government Relations

If you attended “Lobbying 101,” an educational session held during the 2012 IBWA Annual Business Conference in New Orleans, you had the privilege to meet “Felix,” the befuddled, but well-intentioned, citizen lobbyist. Played with amazing aplomb by IBWA’s Dan Felton, vice president of government relations, Felix comically portrayed the common mistakes an individual can make when meeting with a lawmaker. Attendees learned a lot from Felix because he was everything a citizen lobbyist should not be: misinformed, late, distracted, rude, and a poor representation of how to make a lasting good impression. The following text presents a few of the lessons we can learn from Felix. 52

BWR

The 30-30-30 Rule As a citizen lobbyist, it’s important to accept that you will not know all the answers to all the questions—and you aren’t expected to. But with a little knowledge—and a little preparation— you can make the most of a meeting with your legislators and their staff. Remember, your elected officials are most likely not as knowledgeable about the bottled water industry and our issues as you are—you are the industry expert. Once you accept that, you’ll feel more confident in your ability to hold your own when talking with lawmakers. The elected officials and their staff across the table from you aren’t trying to trick you into saying something that is not a

truthful representation of the industry. They are looking to you to share your industry knowledge. The more they know, the better they can do their jobs—representing their constituents. Because you help legislators do their jobs, they welcome the opportunity to hear your perspective on the issues and learn from your experience. But our citizen lobbyist Felix made his first mistake before he even walked through the door: he was unprepared. As a general rule, you should think in terms of the “30-30-30 rule” when meeting with a decision maker: take 30 minutes prior to the meeting to prepare; expect the meeting to last, at most, 30 minutes (unless you have been request-

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS ed to be there longer); and 30 minutes to address follow-up items after the meeting. That simple rule can help you avoid becoming another Felix.

WHEN MEETING WITH LEGISLATORS, PRACTICE THE 30-30-30 RULE.

Importance of “Prep 30” After scheduling an appointment—but sometime before you step into the lawmaker’s office—take at least 30 minutes to prepare. If you’re meeting with a member of Congress, a state legislator, or an elected city or town official, research them. How did they acquire the position? What issues interest them? What is their district? What organizations do they align themselves with? Answering those questions can help you avoid a potentially uncomfortable situation should you touch upon them during your conversation. When researching a regulator or someone appointed to a position, you may have to dig a little deeper for information, but you can still uncover details about the issues that interest them, who they work with, and what goals are on their agenda. Although Felix didn’t refresh his memory about bottled water industry issues before his meeting, you should. Remember, you requested the meeting, so your audience is expecting you to take the lead. While you have the opportunity to direct the conversation, be ready for questions on topics you weren’t planning to address. But don’t feel you have to know the answer to every question; a response of “I don’t know” is not a wrong answer, and it’s better than relaying information you don’t know to be correct. By following up with a response of “I’ll try to find out for you,” you make a commitment to continue communicating with the office—which is a good thing. For guidance on how to handle the second and third 30 minute segments, read “The Sales Call: A Capital Idea,” the Government Relations column from the February/March 2013 issue of Bottled Water Reporter: http://snack.to/fdunymjuv. Once you’ve conducted your research for

the meeting and you are fully prepared, those steps should be easy to follow.

Don’t Be Like Felix Felix’s missteps sent his meeting spiraling into chaos. His lack of focus, inability to communicate effectively, poor reactions toward staff, and poor social skills turned what was a unique opportunity into a wasted chance to convey important bottled water information— and most likely, he’ll never get another meeting with his legislator. The simplest way to visualize a successful meeting is to imagine you’re on the other side of the table: what would you expect

from such a meeting? Some people like to conduct a brief run-through of the meeting. Practice in front of a mirror or role play with a colleague to ensure you are communicating your message in the way that suits your needs. So, can a Felix learn from his mistakes? Definitely! If you commit to the preparation work beforehand, you can make a successful meeting with your legislators a reality. But what about IBWA’s Felix? Can he learn also? Come find out at the next lobbying educational session during the 2013 IBWA Annual Business Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, November 11-15.

Telling the Story, Communicating the Facts By Chris Hogan, IBWA Vice President of Communications

When IBWA staff is asked to tell bottled water’s story, we often face the task of correcting firmly held, though completely inaccurate, beliefs about its safety, regulation, or quality. For the most part, we find that people do want the facts—because they are searching for trustworthy information about issues important to them and their families. Yet, inaccurate “facts” are continuously perpetuated by groups that vigorously oppose bottled water, often well-meaning activists seeking to lend their support to environmental issues. In this column, we correct some of the most common bottled water myths— and we encourage you to promote these 54

BWR

facts in your company’s communications efforts.

MYTH: Bottled is Not Really Regulated FACT: Bottled water is comprehensively regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a packaged food product, and it provides a consistently safe and reliable source of drinking water. By federal law, FDA regulations governing the safety and quality of bottled water must be at least as stringent as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that govern tap water. And, in some

very important cases like lead, coliform bacteria, and E. coli, bottled water regulations are substantially more stringent.

MYTH: Bottled Water is of Suspect Quality or Not Safe FACT: Consumers who choose to drink bottled water can rely on its consistent record of safety and quality. All bottled water products—whether from groundwater or public water sources—are produced utilizing a multi-barrier approach. From source to finished product, a multi-barrier approach helps prevent possible harmful contamination to the finished

COMMUNICATIONS product as well as storage, production, and transportation equipment. Many of the steps in a multi-barrier system are effective in safeguarding bottled water from microbiological and other contamination. Measures in a multi-barrier approach may include one or more of the following: source protection, source monitoring, reverse osmosis, distillation, micro-filtration, carbon filtration, ozonation, and ultraviolet (UV) light. What about safety? In 2009, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) conducted a survey of bottled water regulatory authorities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and found there were zero outbreaks of foodborne illness from bottled water over a five-year period. Moreover, in testimony before the U.S. Congress in 2009, FDA stated that the agency was aware of no major outbreaks of illness or serious safety concerns associated with bottled water in the past decade. In contrast, EPA researchers estimate that 16.4 million cases of acute gastrointestinal illness per year are caused by tap water.

MYTH: Bottled Water Labels Hide Information FACT: As a packaged food product, FDA regulations mandate that bottled water labels must contain the name and place of business of the bottler, packer, or distributor, and virtually all bottled water products provide a telephone number. With that information, consumers may contact the bottled water company directly to obtain information about the product. In addition, strict FDA labeling requirements ensure that the source and purity of the bottled water are identified and that, if the label is false or misleading in any respect, the supplier is subject to civil or criminal sanctions

for product “misbranding. There is no similar remedial action available in the tap water regulatory program.

MYTH: PET Plastic Contains BPA (and BPA is Dangerous) FACT: News items about the safety of bottled water containers consistently yield both misinformation and outright lies. For more than 30 years, FDA and similar regulatory agencies throughout the world have approved PET as safe for food and beverage contact. PET is used in a variety of packaging for many foods, including everything from peanut butter, soft drinks, and juices to beer, wine, and spirits. For bottled water, PET plastic is commonly used for small, portable 16.9- (half-liter) and 24-ounce size containers and 3- and 5-gallon containers. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a safe chemical compound that is never present in PET plastic. Although PET does not contain BPA, international regulatory agencies and FDA have ruled favorably on the safety of BPA. The consensus among those regulatory agencies is that the current levels of exposure to BPA through food packaging are safe. For more on BPA, visit http://bit.ly/BPAissafe.

MYTH: Bottled Water Has an Awful Environmental Footprint FACT: All bottled water containers are 100-percent recyclable. When you do the math, it turns out that of all the plastics produced in the United States, PET plastic bottled water packaging makes up only 0.91 percent. Moreover, plastic bottled water containers form only one-third of 1 percent of the U.S. waste stream, according to the EPA. Data released in January 2013, by the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) shows that at 38.6 percent, recycling rates for

SHARE BOTTLED WATER FACTS TO DISPEL THE BOTTLED WATER MYTHS. single-serve PET plastic bottled water containers have more than doubled in the last seven years. And, PET plastic bottled water containers are the most frequently recycled PET beverage container in curbside recycling programs. That said, we all need to continue improving the recycling rates for all plastic packaging. Recycling is the single-most impactful way individuals can help reduce waste.

MYTH: Bottled Water is Ridiculously Expensive FACT: As a popular retail food product, bottled water is available at many differing price points. When alluding to differences in cost between tap and bottled water, opponents typically cite retail prices from convenience or drug stores, where bottled water prices are usually higher. However, according to the Beverage Marketing Corporation (BMC), the average wholesale price per gallon of domestic non-sparkling bottled water was $1.22 in 2011 (most recent figures available at press time). BMC also notes that research shows consumers most often tend to buy bottled water in bulk from supermarkets or large discount retailers, as they prefer to purchase bottled water in cost-saving volumes.

Water Use Benchmarking How IBWA’s Work With BIER Will Benefit the Industry By Tamika Sims, PhD, IBWA Director of Science and Research

As a follow-up to our 2009 Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) Study that showed bottled water has a small environmental footprint (visit http:// bit.ly/IBWALCI for more), IBWA has now commissioned a Water Use Ratio Study. With help from the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER), facilitated by the Antea Group, IBWA will produce in 2013 a Water Use Ratio Study to highlight the bottled water 56

industry’s water efficiency and sustainable practices. A core mission of BIER is to promote the beverage sector’s environmental sustainability by developing industryspecific methods and data. As stressed in the group’s mission statement, BIER seeks to “create tools and methodologies that accelerate sustainability and its journey from analysis to action.” IBWA’s water accounting study will essentially look at the ratio between water use

and product produced (“water out”) for a bottling facility and review the efficiency of the facility’s practices. The strategy is to promote good practices, look for places of improvement, and set performance benchmarks for the bottled water industry. While many beverage production companies have been recognized as being proactive with their water stewardship, there is still room for improvement and need for analysis of performance.

How to View Water Stewardship What is water stewardship? I like the definition used by the World Wildlife Federation (www.WWF.org): “In essence, [water stewardship] can be described as actions on the part of companies who seek to improve the efficiency and cleanliness of their internal operations and in their supply chain, while also facilitating the sustainable management of shared freshwater resources through collaboration with other businesses, governments, NGOs, communities, and others. Stewardship implies that there is both an internal and external component to water issues. . . Stewardship recognizes that business risk is ultimately created when water is poorly managed or over-exploited….” WWF.org also provides an effective definition of “water awareness”—something else IBWA hopes to gain from the results of our Water Use Ratio Study: water awareness is “gaining an awareness of water issues—in terms of how water impacts business and how business impacts water—is an on-going and iterative step for all companies. A key facet of awareness is internal engagement… Water awareness can also highlight how a company is perceived by others, including basin stakeholders, the press, and consumers….” As illustrated by multiple activities of IBWA member companies—and as shown in the results of our lightweighting studies and our LCI—the bottled water industry works to be environmental stewards while producing a high-quality product. Thus, the production of the IBWA Water Use Ratio Study will further strengthen our environmental sustainability message.

The Big Picture According to BIER, a high-quality water source is essential for all beverage industry products, which has focused on

water use avoidance and conservation to demonstrate one aspect of environmental stewardship. With that knowledge, for the past six years BIER has reported on an annual quantitative benchmark to examine water use for the beverage industry. BIER completed its sixth annual water use benchmarking study in 2012, which evaluated the performance of more than 1,600 beverage manufacturing facilities scattered across six continents and representing 17 different beverage companies. The study

TECHNICAL UPDATE significant water use improvements in water scarce operations and areas that are forecasted to be more water-stressed in the near future.” Most notably, BIER found that the water use ratio range reported in the bottled water sub-group had the smallest range of all sub-groups: companies providing data for bottled water operations (131 total facilities) revealed their water use ratio presented a 5 percent improvement from 2009 to 2011. To review results from this study, download the PDF at http://bit.ly/ BIERwateruse.

IBWA’S 2013 WATER USE RATIO STUDY WILL HELP THE INDUSTRY FURTHER OUR ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS. aimed to deliver a clear understanding of water use drivers and impacts, and to demonstrate improvements in water stewardship efforts. For that benchmarking study, the data set came from BIER member companies who provided three years’ worth of facility-specific metrics (2009, 2010, and 2011), including total water usage, total beverage production, beverage product mix, facility type, and facility location. The basis for analysis was the water use ratio: how efficiently a facility uses water for beverage production. The results were categorized by four facility types: bottling, brewery, distillery, and winery. The 2012 study concluded that there was “an overall improvement in industry-wide water use ratio, with approximately 73 [percent] of facilities realizing improved water use ratios from 2009 to 2011. . . BIER member companies demonstrated

BIER’s Benchmarking Forecast BIER continues to improve upon its beverage industry analysis of water use ratio and benchmarking methodology. Benchmarking water use has provided great value to BIER by helping its individual members assess their performance across a peer group, demonstrate efficacy, and serve as a basis for individual facility target setting. IBWA members and staff are looking forward to the final results of our Water Use Ratio Study for the bottled water industry. Those research results will not only help strengthen our already effective messaging on the bottled water industry’s environmental awareness and compliance but will also serve as a learning tool to help further our environmental efforts.

VALUE OF IBWA MEMBERSHIP TRAVIS GOODWIN VICE PRESIDENT CALEDONIA WATER COMPANY HOUSTON | TEXAS ALL ABOUT TRAVIS At the age of 31, Travis and his partners own six different businesses. His latest new business endeavor—customprinted paper towels with college sports logos—has earned $1.2 million in sales since January 2013. His mantra is, “Pay now, play later.” However, when Travis gets a break, he travels and sportfishes in the Bahamas, Key West, and New Orleans, his wife’s hometown.

When it comes to making beverages, it’s all about economics, says Travis Goodwin, vice president of Caledonia Water Company. Goodwin studied business development in college before joining his family’s beverage business, Merrytime Diversified Products, where he honed skills in all aspects of operations for more than eight years. He joined Caledonia Water Company in August 2012 after a chance meeting while scouting facilities to produce Soccerade, a sports drink endorsed by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. Since then, Caledonia Water Company has undergone an extensive restructuring and is now a complete beverage manufacturer with a state-of-the-art facility right in the center of Houston, Texas. One of Goodwin’s business strategies is to focus on producing bottled water for customers willing to pay a premium, such as private label bottled water, and on other beverages, such as Soccerade, which yield much higher returns. Currently, bottled water makes up 10 percent of his product line. Goodwin says his involvement with IBWA has helped him quickly learn about the bottled water industry—regulations, policies, and issues. “It’s good to interact with your competition, network and find out what people are doing,” he says. Goodwin attributes another chance meeting at an IBWA conference that he says was worth the time and cost of the event, as it has since led to him producing a new beverage—alkaline water. “The main reason I went to the IBWA conference was because I didn’t know very much about the bottled water industry. My experience was mainly with juices,” he says. “Regulations are totally different for bottled water. Water is actually 10 times more regulated than juices, which is surprising to me. And there’s a lot more involved in producing bottled water than just sticking water in a bottle.” “The IBWA conference showed me how I could get involved within the industry to make sure that I stayed on top of the game.” The IBWA meetings and tradeshows serve more than just bottlers. Goodwin says the events are great ways for packaging suppliers to meet with key decision makers who make buying decisions for bottled water plants. “Ultimately, these are the people you are going to be selling to.”
