Editor’s Note

One way to cope with the recent hot weather is to head for the beaches where there has been lots of action lately. We’ve had jets ski racing, yachting regattas and the Princess Pa Cup in the 2015 Asian Beach Polo. Whether you’ve been taking in the action or just taking a cooling dip, the beach has been the place to be.

On a more sombre note we must acknowledge the tragedy in Nepal and the loss of life at sea for those refugees taking the dangerous passage in the Mediterranean. We also took a trip to Kanchanaburi to join the 100th anniversary of ANZAC Day, not as a celebration, but recognition of the sacrifices made by soldiers of all nations during war time.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

4 The Prime Minister Wants Action on Some Hua Hin Issues The Prime Minister of Thailand General Prayuth Chan-ocha paid an official visit to Hua Hin on 27th March 2015. During his visit he monitored some local issues and talked with local sellers. Prayut was in Hua Hin for a Cabinet retreat at the Army Rehabilitation and Recreation Center at Suanson Pradipat. Parking In Hua Hin The Prime Minister promised parking areas for the Hua Hin market and downtown area so that tourists can stop by and shop in town. Deputy Government Spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Prayut had received a complaint from vendors in Hua Hin downtown that tourists could not park their cars in the area, causing their income to sharply drop. In the past, tourists could park their cars on roadsides to shop but now they face fines by traffic police for doing so, the complaint stated. Sansern said Prayut raised the complaint during the Cabinet meeting Friday and the Prime Minister ordered the Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor to coordinate with the Hua Hin municipality to find car parks that would not affect the traffic rules.

Hua Hin Beach Organisation There are believed to be 118 local business owners located at beach areas. General Prayuth received complaints about how some of the business owners trespassed onto public areas and how they sold their products to tourists at unreasonable prices. He was also told that some beach sellers did not properly take care of beach tables, beach umbrellas and deckchairs. After the beach visit, the Prime Minister called for an immediate meeting with all the local business owners to discuss about how to make the Hua Hin beach better organised and how to sell food, drink and other products with reasonable prices. He also talked about legal measures against selling at extremely high price. The business owners were also asked not to construct any building on the beach. The Prime Minister suggested that they should tidy up beach tables, beach umbrellas and deckchairs every day. On Wednesdays, they should have a break and clean the beach together. The business owners working in other people’s area without their permission were asked to move to Hua Don Beach.

Ms. Jongkolani Ritthiyong, a fruit seller, representing street vendors and sellers on Hua Hin beaches, thanked him for the good measures to organise the Hua Hin beaches. She also asked him to help install permanent electricity meters and provide tap water to the sellers. The Prime Minister agreed to help them and assigned the Prachuab Khirihan Governor to take care of the issue. Fishermen’s Concerns Another complaint he received was from local fishermen who complained about the rule that requires their small fishing boats of 30-ton capacity to be installed with a GPS device if the boats have a roof chamber. The fishermen claimed that most of their

small fishing boats have roof chambers so that they could stay away from the blazing sun while fishing in the sea. Prayut promised to look into the complaint by seeking opinions from other agencies concerned. He also asked all fishermen to install a GPS system so that they can be easily located and found in case of an accident. A New University & the High Speed Train The Prime Minister also commented that the government is considering a new university in Hua Hin where self-sufficiency economy is taught to students. In terms of the high speed train, he said that it should be completed within 5 to 10 years.

Artificial Reefs Continue To Be Installed Offshore More artificial reefs will be installed in underwater areas off the Hua Hin and Pranburi coast. On 19th March 2015, the Hua Hin Mayor Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul and representatives of local fishermen took possession of 400 artificial reef sections from the Chairperson of the Pranburi Fishing Association Mr. Atichart Chaisri and the Senior Advisor of Mubadala Co. Ltd. Mr. Aphinan Bunbandit. The production and installation of artificial reefs responds to an urgent need by local fishermen for more habitats to promote marine life. Mubadala Co. Ltd. is a natural gas and oil exploration company which has taken an interest in the project. The artificial reef sections were made to a standard of the Fishery Department of Thailand. Each section is 1.5 metres long and 1.5 metres wide and made of ferro-

cement. The first 300 were installed in 2013; the second 300 in 2014 and the third 400 will be installed this year. The sections will form underwater structures, something like fish underwater condominiums! The artificial reefs will serve as a new marine habitat for marine creatures such as squid, grouper, threadfin and pomfret which inhabit regional locations. Increased marine life means more income for local fishermen. Research has indicated that in the two years since the first reefs were installed, the income of many fishermen increased, indicating the success of the project. Mr. Aphinan said that Mubadala Co. Ltd. was concerned about the way of life of local

fishermen and wanted to assist them. The company has already helped Thai fishermen in eastern Thailand; in Chanthaburi, Trad and Rayong as well as Samut Songkhram. The Company has also installed artificial reefs in southern Thailand, particularly in Songkhla and its neighboring areas. The Hua Hin Mayor said he would like to thank Mubadala Co. Ltd. Apart from helping local fishermen, the project promoted sustainable increases of marine life and more local marine products. Mr. Nopporn encouraged other private organisations to become involved in such projects. He hopes that future budget allocations may also allow local administrators to further participate.

Sam Roi Yod - Gateway To Thailand’s Underwater World Underwater diving and learning SCUBA diving is on the agenda of many in Hua Hin, however most don’t really consider getting started until they travel much further south. It’s true to say that water clarity off Hua Hin is not special because of the effects of sedimentary discharge from the Chao Phraya River entering the gulf then being carried by the currents south. There’s also a lack of coral reefs. However just a 40 minutes south of Hua Hin is the first real SUBA opportunity this side of Bangkok with PADI (Professional Association Of Diving Instructors) certified instruction and then the clear waters of Koh Talu (sometimes with 15 metres visibility) within easy reach. This really is an opportunity to learn the skills of Scuba diving without a major journey away from Hua Hin or perhaps a few days holiday at

one of the many accommodation options around Sam Roi Yod. Hua Hin Divers is situated at Dolphin Bay where Master Scuba Diver Trainer Steve Thompson has a purpose built pool for the initial instructions and then offers Discover Scuba Diving experiences (one day), Open Water Scuba Diver (4 days), Scuba Diver (2 days), Advanced (3 days) and Rescue. Courses are kept to small groups to ensure that each student is given plenty of time to both master skills and have an enjoyable dive experience without the usual rush at other areas of Thailand. There’s a 7.5 metre R.I.B. (rigid inflatable boat) with a 140 hp outboard on hand for open water expeditions with all the necessary safety gear. On our visit we met Johannes, a young German who had a few days to spare during a business trip to Bangkok. He didn’t really want to travel to Pattaya or too far away from Bangkok, so after a phone call to Steve he opted for a trip to Pranburi where he was met by Steve. His first open water dive was scheduled for the day after our visit so he’s a happy man.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

Steve has something like 15 years’ experience as an instructor in the underwater world. He and his wife (she’s also a qualified instructor) have travelled the length and breadth of the Thailand coast and know the best of what is on offer. One of the bonuses of any course is to receive a ‘souvenir’ video, ‘Discover Scuba Diving Thailand’. This was filmed and produced by Steve via ‘Dive Club Thailand’ back in 2004 but remains as the definitive guide to dive sites around Thailand. Steve’s a very relaxed operator with a flexible approach but he’s also a very professional and qualified instructor. When we arrived at Dolphin Bay he was explaining to his student a recommendation for a 24 hours interval after diving before his flight. That’s something I didn’t know! In the future there are plans to open shipwreck diving, around an hour’s trip in a fast boat into the gulf. H.T.M.S. Pattini, H.T.M.S. Phali, and H.T.M.S. Nongsarhai are three Royal Thai Navy battleships which were sunk as target ships during the 70’s and 80’s just waiting to be explored. The message is there’s no need to

6 Three of The Most Important Days In Thailand

The month of May has some very important religious and royal occasions that are observed and celebrated across Thailand. We’ve included Visaka Bucha Day, usually in May, but the full moon of the sixth lunar month this year falls on June 1st. Coronation Day read by the Chief of Brahmin priests followed by an evening chanting performed by Buddhist monks. On 5th May food is offered to monks and a celebration of the Royal Regalia. At noon the Army and Navy fire a 21-gun salute in honour of the king. His Majesty the King also presents royal decorations to people who have made a valuable contribution to the country. Royal Ploughing Day – 13th May

Coronation Day – 4th & 5th May The coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej took place on 5th May 1950. His Majesty is the ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty. On 5th May of every year, the Thai people rejoice and express their affection and loyalty to him by organizing a celebration on his coronation day.

Prior to the reign of King Rama IV (King Mongkut), there was no coronation ceremony in Thailand, there was only private ceremony held by high ranking officials to celebrate their Royal Regalia and positions in the 6th lunar month. On 4th May, the Coronation Ceremonies begin with the proclamation of the

The Royal Plowing Ceremony is called Pra Ratchapitii Puetchamongkon. It is an ancient royal rite held in Cambodia and Thailand to mark the traditional beginning of the rice-growing season and ensure fertility of crops. The ceremony has been performed in Thailand since the Sukhothai period, some 700 years ago, and is closely watched by farmers across the country. The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is deemed a vital event by Thai farmers for their agricultural fortune, signifies one of the prominent traditional features of Thailand’s cultural identity. Visaka Bucha Day – 1st June Visakha Bucha Day or Wan Pra Yai marks the three important incidents in the life of Lord Buddha on the same day – the full

Touring Cyclists in Hua Hin countries we have traveled. Many of the roads in Thailand have good quality shoulders, even though they are not specifically bicycle lanes. Also, riding in Thailand feels more like we are on holiday than the tough cycling we have experienced in other countries. Finding accommodation, food and water is very easy here in Thailand. It seems like there is a petrol station along the road every 10 kilometres with bathrooms, water, and many other things we need. Finding these basic needs while cycling in other countries can be very time consuming and frustrating. What do you find difficult about cycle touring in Thailand? Riding through Bangkok! Even though we rode through on a weekend day, Sunday, which we thought would be less busy; we still had nerve-wracking and tough days of cycling on the roads of Thailand’s capital.

Three touring cyclists were spotted pedaling through a small back street of Hua Hin barely wide enough to accommodate the bulging side packs slung to their bikes. They were asked about their cycling experiences in Thailand and a long and enjoyable Q & A session followed with some friendly people who were happy to share their experience and knowledge. Where are you going? What is the final destination of your trip? We have come from Vietnam and are continuing to Singapore by way of Malaysia. Then to Indonesia and perhaps even further, Australia and New Zealand are in the plan. What preparations did you make for coming to Thailand? We believe you cannot plan for everything. That would not be in the spirit of bicycle touring. We enjoy spontaneity and think it is a big part of travel. But, you do need to stay ready for anything on a bicycle tour; bad weather or somebody getting sick can change your plans very quickly and HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

you must be able to adapt to that. We all made sure that we got the two-month (60 Day) tourist visa to allow for adequate time to cycle through Thailand to the Malaysian border. How are you finding your route? We use paper maps mostly. These maps are quite reliable and durable for cycle touring, although they do not have very much detail for finding smaller roads. They are plastic and therefore can withstand the wear and tear associated with cycle touring. We have also used Google Maps online as a reference to get an idea of where we are and where we would like to go. It is a good resource, but you must have Internet access to be able to use it. Sometimes it has been difficult to find Internet access or the connectivity is not so good in places we have been during our trip. What do you find easy about cycle touring in Thailand? The Thai drivers seem very tolerant of cyclists, more so than in other Asian

Have any of you traveled to Thailand prior to this cycle touring trip? We have very little experience with Thailand. Even though two have spent a very short holiday here some time ago, we all feel that we are really seeing Thailand for the first time on this cycling trip. What advice would you give to other cyclists thinking about coming to tour in Thailand? Don’t bring a tent and sleeping bag. You will not need it, the guesthouses can be found very easily and the price is very good. Try all of the food, it is wonderful. Don’t worry about having to carry a lot of water, you can find water in many places along the road. Always be flexible with your plans.

moon of the sixth lunar month. The three significant separate events are : 1. The Buddha’s Birth 2. The Enlightenment of Buddha – While sitting under the Bodhi tree, he found his answer and attained the enlightenment at the age of 35 years. 3. The Nibbana- The Buddha passed away on Tuesday, the Vesak full moon day, at the age of eighty years (around 2547 years ago).

How does Thailand compare to other countries you have done cycle touring in? We can give you the Pros and Cons of what we have experienced so far during this part of our trip in Thailand. We will spend a few more weeks cycling through Thailand so maybe these will change, but so far: The Pros – great food, inexpensive accommodations, good roads, and easy to find maps & route information. The Cons – cycling through Bangkok. It is not impossible, but it is not very enjoyable. Footnote: Prime Minister Prayut recently promised that his government will build five more bicycle lanes in Bangkok and extend bike lanes to cover the entire capital so as to facilitate people to use bicycles for travels. In making improvement of existing bike lanes, he said the surface of roads, including drainage covers, will be smoothed for safe pedaling. For safety, all lanes will be painted in green with symbols to show they are reserved for bicycles.

8 fashion & life style Swimming Suits Trends 2015 A new year of gorgeous swimwear is available and there are definitely some major trends among the bikini brands. High waisted bikinis, fringe, and tassels are so last year as 2015 shows off new styles of crop top swimsuits and intricate tribal print bikinis! Every major swim brand is hitting on the two themes so expect to see it everywhere! Considering how cute they are, we aren’t complaining! Fresh styles of cropped bikini tops with high neck lines are taking swimwear fashion to another level for Summer! Delicate macramé, crochet, and mesh are featured on the high neck bikini top styles alongside bright flashes of color. These must-have bikini tops are definitely worth getting the crazy tan lines! Mix and match them with Brazilian bikinis for a stunning look. The other biggest trend is the widespread use of tribal prints. Zigzag lines and dots, geometric designs, and ethnic patterns are all coming to the party in this tribal print bathing suit trend. We particularly love the way each swimwear brand has chosen a bright or pastel colour palette for their tribal print styles!

High Waisted Pin Up Bikinis with Cut Outs

Ethnic Print Swimwear

The retro style combined with the chic modern flair creates the ultimate swimwear style piece. But now these designers are taking it one step further and adding side cut outs to the high waisted bottoms. It creates a very sexy trend when the hips are exposed, and we all know that when it comes to swimwear, sometimes showing the more skin the better.

This up-and-coming trend is wildly showcased. Ethnic print swimwear uses tribal designs and primitive patterns to take that style up a notch. This year ethnic printed swimwear, which when combined with bright colors and shiny embellishments, really put on quite the swimwear spectacle.

Strappy Bottoms or Caged Bikini Tops

Fluttery Flounce Tops

Caged Bikini Tops are one of the hottest trends that we’ve been talking about for months now. Caged bikini tops offer an amazing benefit of covering up a little more of the rib drift, resulting in an elongated torso. This gives the illusion of a thinner, more-toned core, which is something every woman wants to highlight!

If you’re a gal looking to add volume to the look of your bust, look no further than the trendy “flutter” top. The sweetly ruffled detail will add a cup size or more, and you don’t even need padding! You can find this romantic style on triangle tops, bandeaus, and even one-pieces. The Target swimwear department has loads of this style.

Crop Top Bikinis

Mesh/Crochet Bikinis

This style is extremely cute, comfortable, and flattering for most body shapes. A wide variety of sporty bra tops that offer maximum support for larger busts, criss-cross straps for optimal control during high-intensity sports, and thicker fashion straps for a boho and chic “cami look” that is trending for 2015. Leave the fear of your swimsuit falling off behind or the annoying pain at your neck from a string-bikini knot!

The beauty of mesh, or crochet bikinis lies in that adding crochet detail can result in truly original and couture fashion. Even in ever so subtle measures, crochet swimsuits have an incredible appeal. Crochet appliques in swimsuits and bikinis give the item an extra kick and fashionable flair. Even pairing two crochet swimsuits of the same style side by side will yield different results.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

9 Hua Hin Sixes – 20 Years of Cricket At The Dusit Thani The original name of the Dusit Thani was the Dusit Resort and Polo Club but that doesn’t mean the land in front of the resort was originally a polo ground. The grounds were created as a purpose made cricket ground, perhaps the first in Thailand. These days it is also used for a variety of other sports, for example the Dusit Thani Hua Hin Football Academy, offering a wide range of football courses for children from 4 – 15 years of age. However it should not be forgotten that in 1994, the plan to convert what was a swamp area into a cricket ground was first hatched and in 1996 the first Hua Hin Sixes tournament was being played. Thanasak Karnasuta – ‘Tom’ tells the story of being drafted as the first President of the Thailand Cricket League in 1993. He quickly found out that a first priority for the League was to have it’s own grounds. No more playing second fiddle to other sports with cancelled fixtures being a

common problem. His entrepreneurial efforts secured funding from sponsors such as the Singha Corporation and then the support of the Dusit International Group Owner Khun Chanin and the Resident Manager John Gill. These days the grounds are in great shape with a brand new extended Astro Turf pitch installed this year. Tom is still the prime organiser of the Annual Hua Hin Sixes and still the President of the Thailand Cricket League and this year there were 21 teams competing with 84 games happening over 6 days concluding on 9th April. This year the winners were: Veterans: Gold Coast Tigers Masters: Willsmere Wanderers Cup: Thai Thevada Major sponsors: Tourism Authority of Thailand, Bangkok Post, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, TNF cricket products from Australia. Additional sponsors included Smirnoff, Singha Beer and the Hilton Hua Hin. As the regulars say – ‘No Tom No Sixes.’ However it must also be said that he only features in match statistics as the player with the all-time second highest number of ‘wides’ in an over – 9! For non-cricketers, a ‘wide’ is a ball which is bowled outside of the batters reach. That’s not a good look as the batting team scores a bonus run each time and the ball must be bowled again.

10 Women’s Trends 2015 Floral

Crop it

Overalls

Women’s Don’ts

Ripped to-the-max jeans.

It is true: This season’s offerings are far from the traditional buds. The prints have a tougher look—they aren’t ultra-fem with an overload of sweetness. Instead, floral bloomed with a strong, wild feel—and a slightly abstract vibe.

If New York Fashion Week proved anything, it’s that crop tops aren’t going anywhere. Sure, we spotted many an adorable matching set, but we were pleasantly surprised to see some fresh spins on the look, too.

Stripes

Say it like you mean it

Overalls are back. This trend comes from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Traditionally, this wardrobe piece was designed to be worn over or under another layer of clothing to make an extra protection while wearing it. The 2015 is full of comfortable, practical and incredibly stylish models.

Ripped jeans are cool. Jeans that are so torn that your whole leg is falling out? Bra or crop top

Denim all the way

Do not ever leave your house wearing only your underwired flopper stopper. Platform sole stilettos

From skirts to shirts, trousers and blouses, stripe is one of the biggest trends of the season, so wear it bravely. Designers have striped their runway looks in practically every shade of the rainbow. There’s nothing uniform about them, either. These ones are coming from all directions at different widths and in refreshingly vibrant hues.

Let’s face it, your t-shirt says a lot about you. Are you funny? serious? shy? Are you trying to send a message without having to say it? Whether you’re heading to the gym, heading out to a low-key happy hour, or looking to pair something with your favorite jeans or shorts, the perfect tee can make or make your look.

From a subtle ‘70s kick that lends denim a much wider silhouette, to the brand-new take on the relaxed, boyfriend fit, you’re going to want to read up on all different styles; slashed, white, boyfriend, overalls, slim gray cigarette, flares, patchwork., etc. You’ll want to wear your new jeans right away and, of course, all season long.

Men’s Trends 2015 Statement Stripes

The white Sneaker.

Bold, vibrant and bound to get the blood pumping, red is the definitive colour of 2015. Often considered a tricky hue to carry off (particularly for fairer skin tones), red is best kept to one statement-making element – giving a punch to both casual and smart looks. For those unafraid to properly immerse themselves in the trend, a deep red suit worn with a white button-down shirt and black leather loafers is an outstanding evening wear choice for any warm-weather event, which cannot fail to get you noticed.

A mainstay of both the casual and formal sides of our wardrobe, stripes are (as usual) expected to be big news for 2015. The stripe was given pride of place in collections from Gucci and Jonathan Saunders to CaselyHayford and Emporio Armani, where they were applied to a wide variety of garments including both tailored staples like smart trousers and shirts, as well as more relaxed jumpers and accessories. Note: Before you rush out and purchase, it’s worth remembering that different stripes will have different effects on your overall size and shape. Horizontal stripes tend to make you look wider by breaking up the vertical silhouette, while vertical stripes draw the eye down quickly, giving the illusion of length/ height. With this in mind, if you’re short and squat, you’re better off avoiding the former, while lankier gentlemen would do well to stay away from the latter.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

The Italians had a very clear message in Milan: Wear sneakers with everything you own. Nearly every runway had models in either minimal kicks or completely amped up athletic shoes. And when the Milanese go casual, you know it’s serious. Come next year, you’ll be squirreling your cash away to drop it on a pair for your jeans, your chinos, your shorts, and your suit. At least you know you’ll be comfortable. Here’s what you’ll be working with. It turns out the sneakers by Adidas were just easing us into a whole new era of white “shoe”-tuations. And here is another piece of style advice: White sneakers under white trousers are a definite no-no.

Green And Blue

The Western equivalent of the ancient torture of Chinese foot-binding, trying to get anywhere in six-inch platforms makes you look like a pig in a skirt hobbling on your trotters.

Men’s Don’ts Flip Flops

It’s the barely there cover for your feet ideal for a backyard barbecue or a beachside jaunt. And that’s about as far as a flip-flop should go. Deep V Necks

It doesn’t matter how much you bench at the gym and how much hair you waxed off your chest, it looks bad!

Seeing Red

It may once have been said that blue and green should never be seen together, but in 2015 it’s a match made in heaven. Note: The key to carrying off this pairing is to limit the number of other colours you add to the mix. Dark neutrals like brown and black don’t work well with bold blue and green combos, so try slate grey and white to tie it

Sport Sunglasses They are specifically designed for sporting activity.

The Director of the Regional Marine Office in Prachuab Khirikhan Mr. Suriya Kophatta, the Hua Hin Police Office, the Hua Hin Tourist Police Office, the Hua Hin Municipality and the District Office of Hua Hin have recently met with local kiteboard business owners to consider safe practices for kiteboarding on Hua Hin beaches.

For more information visit http://www. ppgathailand.com/golf-festival-2015/. However it is suggested that some changes may occur closer to the commencement date.

The current kiteboard zone is between Soi Hua Hin 67 and 77, covering a beach frontage of around 1 kilometre. Kiteboarding should only take place 50 metres out from the low water mark so that other beach activities are not affected. The kiteboard business owners need to ask for permission from the land owners then inform the authorities. The Department of Marine Transport will formulate an area map and the GPS locations. 14 Apples ain’t Apples & Golf Balls ain’t Golf Balls

In most sports you can only choose the racket, bat or boot - but not the ball. One of the oddities of golf is that you also get to choose your ball. However many golfers give this choice little thought. Using a ball that suits your ability may be just as important as choosing the right golf clubs. are two-piece. Two piece balls are a good choice for beginners and high handicappers who wish to gain more distance but reduce spin when hitting a golf ball. Three Piece Balata

“The idea that a golf ball widely played on tour is automatically a good choice for most amateurs is crazy and a disservice to the majority of golfers.” Brandon Sowell, Bridgestone Golf. Not all golf balls are the same. The type of ball used greatly affects the most important elements of a golf game: distance and control. Choosing the right golf ball is a critical decision and with so many kinds to consider the choice may seem overwhelming. When golf balls were made from wood, goose feathers, or a type of rubber called gutta, these original balls could not travel far, nor could they fly straight or in predictable patterns. By 1900, the golf ball had come a long way and consisted of a solid rubber core wrapped in rubber thread that was contained in a hard, outer sphere-shaped shell. Recent advancements in technology have allowed the development of balls that consist of two or up to five layers. Each ball has unique performance characteristics.

Spin Spin balls create more side and backspin, which allows the ball to have a higher trajectory even though it goes a shorter distance. Spin balls also have a better stopping control around the greens. Construction Golf balls are constructed in different ways. Each one is developed to help accomplish specific golfing goals. Golfers should choose their golf balls depending on what their needs or handicaps are during a golf game. For example, if a golfer has a powerful stroke that can go far, yet he or she lacks control, the four piece ball might be a good fit. In contrast, if the golfer has excellent control but needs help with distance, the two-piece ball might be a smart choice.

Control Control balls are designed to reduce excessive spin when struck into the air. Additionally, they help golfers reduce hooking and slicing tendencies.

Three piece balls are made from a soft, plastic rubber called Balata. The solid, thin core of a three piece ball, called the mantle, can either increase distance or enhance spin, depending on how it is hit. Thus, these balls offer good control. Three piece balls are also called professional balls because they are preferred by pro golfers who want better control over the direction and distance of their shots. Four Piece

Also known as traditional golf balls, two piece balls are made of a large solid core and have a thermoplastic resin cover made from Surlyn. These balls are made with a heavy jacket and are very durable. They are designed to allow the golfer the most distance from a shot, but they do not offer a lot of spin. Most distance balls

GolfBoard – ‘Surf The Earth’

The GolfBoard was the winner of the Best New Product at the 2014 PGA merchandise Show. This is a product that is in-between pulling a unpowered buggy and riding on the full motorised cart. This is an exciting and enjoyable way to experience the game of golf now appearing on many US courses. It’s said to be easy to master and safe.

Swing Speed Perhaps the biggest factor is choosing which ball is best is the swing speed of the golfer. Golfers with lower swing speeds should use a harder distance golf ball, whereas golfers with higher swing speeds should use a softer golf ball since it offers more control. Conclusion Finding the right golf ball does not have to seem like an impossible task. By taking into consideration the type and construction of ball that is needed to best meet the particular golfer’s goals, you should be able to discover the best golf balls to perfect your performance on the course. A Small Tip Take the time before starting the round to make your unique mark on the golf balls in your bag with a permanent marker. That’s saved many a penalty shot for those about to play the wrong ball.

Two Piece

Types of Balls There are basically three types of golf balls that are each designed to do different things when struck. Distance This type of ball is designed to react quickly as soon as it is struck to produce the maximum speed. Thus, the result is more distance overall. Although these balls can add many yards off the initial tee, they do not stop as quickly on the greens.

technology contains an extra layer for even better feel and control. They offer improved performance across a wider range of clubs for advanced golfers with high club speed. These balls are the most expensive.

Although it is similar to the three piece golf ball, it has an extra layer in the middle. This layer takes the force from the impact of the club head and transfers it to the center core, which allows the ball to fly straighter with less spin. Players attest that these balls offer a longer distance from the tee, more spin on approach shots, and greater control around the green. Because these balls are so effective, they are referred to as ‘total performance’ balls. Five Piece The latest development in the golf ball scene now involves five pieces. This latest

Footnote: ‘One hit wonders’ are often a good choice for the golfer who is liable to lose balls either ‘tok nam’ (in the water) or ‘kow pa’ (gone to the jungle). They may be sold at the pro shop, at kiosks around the course or by locals who wait for customers as they pass. There are sometimes small stalls just before the entry to the course. The best deal is when the balls have been sorted so that you can still choose the type of ball that suits you.

In harnessing the latest technology in electric power, the GolfBoard will give an option to experience the golf course like never before. Players can carry their bag just like they would if they were walking, or they can opt for the handle bar bag mount, which allows players to use the GolfBoard like a stand-up personal golf cart. Our only question: How will the caddie keep up?

Golfboard is an alternative to the sedentary activity of sitting in a cart, while improving speed of play, reducing turf wear, and offering golfers the chance to experience the natural terrain in way previously reserved for surfers and snowboarders. HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

“GolfBoard is the most significant product introduced to golf in a long time. It will add a new and exciting element of fun and fitness and as an operator will help my facility drive rounds.” – TJ Baggett/General Manager; Princeville Golf Club, Princeville, Hawaii

16 Norwegian National Day 2015 May 17th Norway’s Constitution Day is celebrated on May 17th. It commemorates the date when the nation’s constitution was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17th 1814. The Norwegian constitution is the second oldest constitution still used in the world today. Last year was the celebration of the 200th anniversary. It is usually referred to as syttende mai (May 17) or Nasjonaldagen (The National Day) in Norway.

Love in a Foreign Place – The Thai Doctor & The German Artist “I found love in a foreign place, I could stay forever - It’s my time, it’s now or never So much to live for, so much to lose - So much to live for, so much to lose”

(‘The Gossip’, 2012) It’s one of those stories that really cry out for a movie or perhaps a novel with some poetic license. It has all the necessary ingredients; love, international diplomacy, lifechanging decisions, family ties and cultural interaction. It’s a tale woven over nearly 60 years and continues today. A short article can never do justice to all these twists and turns. This can only be just a taste of these two extraordinary lives.

Constitution Day celebrations follow a traditional pattern of parades involving schools, high school graduates, bands, and other members and organisations within the local community. Many people, especially children, dress in their finest clothes on this day with many games, activities and social gatherings.

to enter the prestigious Europäische Kunstakademie (European Art Academy) and pursue her own career. Another obstacle for Renate was the German art culture being male dominated with strict codes of adherence to regulations and assessment if a professional career was to be legitimate. Fast forward and she had beaten the gender unfriendly odds and now enjoys recognition with galleries across Europe displaying her works. The style is abstract with a collage of photo shots and artwork often sharing the canvas, typically following a commissioned theme. ‘Short Cuts From Asia’ introduces scenes from her many Thailand excursions with styised street scenes from the crowded Bangkok metropolis featuring. As an aside, Renate generously donated one of these pieces for the recent Mondo Vino Golf Charity Day. The picture was successfully auctioned for some 18,000 THB, probably a bargain considering the ten or so hours work involved and the status of the artist.

Many Norwegians and people with Norwegian ancestry also celebrate the day in different countries around the world. Public life

The Thai Doctor & The German Artist Doctor and Ms Thongbhoubesra or Tiern (Thiesanitra) and Renate (as we came to know them), call Hua Hin their home for only a few short weeks every year. Home is Freiburg, a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany in the south-west of the country straddling the Dreisam River. But that’s really jumping ahead of the story which for Tiern started in Chumphon Province Thailand, where his grandfather was once the Mayor. His father had a highflying military career which lead to an appointment as the Military attaché in Paris.

Norway’s Constitution Day is a public holiday in Norway. Schools, public offices and businesses are closed. Road users need to take into account that some streets, particularly in the town centres, will be closed and there may be traffic because of the parades that take place on the day, which attract crowds. From 1906 onwards, the Norwegian royal family has gathered on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Oslo, which is Norway’s capital city, to wave to the marching children on Constitution Day each year. Symbols

After spending most of his childhood in Bangkok, as an 18 year old, Tiern joined his father in France for his first taste of European life. He had already been a student of the German language (not French) from a privileged education at a Catholic institution in Bangkok. As an aside, Tien’s mother was also a traveller spending time in Japan to study the seamstress’s art in traditional silk garments, a very honorable Japanese profession; but that’s another story!

An abundance of flags are also seen on this day. The Norwegian flag is red with an indigo blue Scandinavian cross outlined in white that extends to the edges of the flag. The vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side. If you are a Norwegian who wants to better connect with your fellow countrymen, especially on the National Day, we would suggest that you check out the Hua Hin Norwegian Association by visiting their website for details of activities and email connections. www.nordmennihuahin.com.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

So what of the future? The couple’s two adult children are pursuing their careers in Germany. Their son Prischa is now a qualified doctor and has recently renewed his Buddhist faith. He is able to manage the medical practice in his father’s absence, when Tiern is either in Thailand or on the golf courses of Germany. Their daughter Katja’s chosen career path is towards accountancy from an IT perspective.

The next move for him was to become a medical student in Germany at Freiburg University. Medical education at this University dates back to the founding in 1457. Tiern became the first Thai student at the university which subsequently became a focus for Thai medical students, including royalty, travelling to Europe. It’s hard to imagine the interactions between Tiern as 19 year old student from a largely unknown and exotic land and the ‘locals’, but he thrived on seven years of medical training before entering the hospital system for the requisite four years of internship. Enter Renate; a student of cosmetology, aiming to become an expert in the care of makeup as well as skincare and beauty products. One of the issues for this blossoming relationship was parental disapproval with the threat of ‘family expulsion’, with the talented seventeen year old young lady considering moving to Thailand with the handsome, though very foreign, doctor. When you consider that ‘The King and I’, a musical of the late 50’s, was around then, it’s not hard to understand why xenophobia was alive and well.

The bunad, a traditional Norwegian dress, can be worn during Constitution Day. It varies in appearance from region to region, and may feature flower motifs, stripes and pleats. Embroidery can be used on many different parts of the costume, including bonnets, belts, aprons, skirts, shirts, and bodices.

Scenes from ‘Short Cuts From Asia’

History played a part with the now qualified Doctor Tiern deciding to remain in Germany on his father’s advice. At the time the Vietnam War was of concern to the Thai military after US bombing raids in Laos and Cambodia so better to stay abroad. This may have been fortuitous for the couple’s relationship as the move away from Renate’s family was now ‘off the table’. Children followed and in due course family acceptance. In those days dual citizenship was not possible in either of the two countries involved and under threat of deportation, renunciation of Tiern’s Thai citizenship was the only option; a tough decision for someone fiercely patriotic and subject to the scrutiny of his extended family. The good news about this part of the story is that the family’s two children were born earlier, so no issues for their future citizenship. Secondly Tiern has very recently (this year) managed to reclaim his Thai citizenship as the rules are now far more accommodating – literally! Renate’s latent ambition was to enter the art world. Now the family’s two children were old enough to allow their mother

Renate and her art Daughter Katja

Father and son with a nurse at the medical practice Tiern has no plans for retirement soon and is unlikely to return on a permanent basis to Thailand; after all he’s now lived in Germany for nearly 60 years. Renate is commencing a new art commission soon with a baroque theme for an exhibition at Staufen, a German City with a very vivid history. Golf is also one of her passions; “The couple that plays together ……………………..………?” As we said initially, the depth of the cultural experiences, trials, tribulations and achievements of this family could never be adequately described in this brief account. It just remains to thank both Renate and Tiern for telling their story. One of the real positives about living in Thailand is the opportunity to meet people from such diverse and surprising backgrounds. We appreciate Renate and Tiern providing such an opportunity and trust there will be calmer waters ahead. Footnote: As both Renate and Tiern’s English is limited and my German non-existent; our thanks to their friends Rolf and Christine both for the introduction and volunteering to take-on interpretation duties!

18 Good Mourning Kenya? Kenya awakened with dark news last month. Just one more addition to what has lately become an epidemic hard to suppress. The country is growing tired of the constant mauling it has been subjected to in the last few years, but this might just be the spark that ignites a fire. The Al-Shabab attack on the Garissa University College on the 2nd of April has sparked the outrage of many in the country, in what is becoming a very tense affair. One cannot blame the anger caused amongst the populace, as this is the most recent of a continuing trend in the last few years, ever increasing, ever more violent and ever so insensible. It was thoroughly accentuated with the 2013 Nairobi West Gate Shopping Mall bombings in which 67 injuries, a hostage crisis and 175 injuries were reported at the end of what was a disgraceful incident. There were high tensions for some time but these quickly died down and normal life resumed after some denouncing words from the international community and president Uhuru Kenyatta. This time Al-Shabab have gruesomely bested themselves again: the objective of the attacks was a learning centre and had somewhat more intent that the last one did. The casualties more than doubled, standing at a count of 148 and the victims, young students who pursued nothing more than their education, could have made a tragic transformation to take place in the mind-set of how the average Kenyan deals with extremism. This time, Kenyatta has vowed to respond: “in the severest way possible” in order to cut the violence, but the problem sadly resides elsewhere. This issue needs a detailed and well thought-out response. Many factors surround the conflict and could have potentially devastating effects on Kenyan society if not addressed cautiously. The most obvious of potential threats is that of a religious conflict. Kenya is in its majority Christian, but it hosts a sizeable Muslim minority that constitutes eleven percent of the population. Up to this date, Christian Kenyans have not responded with violence to Al-Shabab’s many vicious provocations. The procedure to appease the pain was according to a Kenyan cleric, one of shock, anger and then a shrug, as people learnt to forget. However, this latest incident could have a resounding effect on

that peace. In contrast to previous episodes, the Garissa massacre saw the deliberate targeted killing of Christians specifically, as students were forced to identify their religious affiliation and Muslims were given marching orders before the blood was spilt. The consequences of this could result in a divide between the two religious communities and in hostilities ensuing the segregation. This has been witnessed in the past in nations such as the Central African Republic and in Sudan, and it would not be surprising to see it happening in the Kenya. The country’s Christian representatives have spoken, in regard to their manner of coping with conflict, assuring that whilst it is true that their faith urges them to turn the other cheek, it has now come to the point where they’ve “run out of cheeks.” This sends a defying message to the perpetrators, something that had previously been unheard of in their peaceful approach to violent conflict.

a certain wariness in the air, fearful of the consequences that this will bring. It is a tricky balance to attempt to achieve: on the one part, President Kenyatta cannot continue his relaxed approach when attempting to deal with a problem that is now posing some serious questions in regard to Kenyan security and religious coexistence. Nevertheless, on the other hand, being too harsh with the means that he employs in order to solve the problem can cause further divide in an already tense scenario. The key to Kenyan stability and the rejection of armed extremism from its boundaries is to assess the situation delicately. Raising awareness for national as opposed to religious unity and successfully alienating AlShabab from Islam will be key in Kenya’s foreign policy approach if it is to conserve its domestic peace and use it to fend the threat of radical extremism. For Kenya, the mourning is over; it is time to wake up.

The atmosphere in Kenya is slowly turning sour; there is

The Mediterranean Graveyard It is becoming a gruesome tradition. A daring feat requiring a fatal concoction of ingredients: a lot of desperation, a generous pinch of poverty, false hope, real bravery and a few planks of wood hammered together in the shape of a rickety boat. Death is plaguing the Mediterranean coast through scores of African and Middle Eastern migrants seeking a solution, to the prospects of a life they see worth endangering in order to escape one that would leave them no better off. Just in the past month, there have been close to fifteen hundred deaths due to the shipwreck of boats attempting to reach European soil. Extended between various points of southern Europe, the vessels have been arriving unexpectedly and meeting their end off the coasts of frontier locations such as Rhodes in Greece or Lampedusa in Italy. Coastguards have been overworked and migrant reception centres have quickly

exceeded their capacity, to the point where Lampedusa’s infrastructure initially built to house eight hundred people has rocketed to almost fifty thousand. This of course, is nothing new. Lampedusa is far from a stranger when it comes to accommodating the arrival of illegal migrants. For the last fifteen years, the Italian island has been receiving unsurmountable quantities of arrivals that are difficult for the authorities to contend with. The only difference to the pattern seems to be that the numbers keep increasing. They became exponential as the Arab Spring got on its way and have remained so to date, something that is vastly preoccupying for the European Union as the numbers have shown no sign of a halt. On the contrary, the proneness to find a migrant attempting to make a death-defying crossing is today greater than it has ever been.

There are a number of reasons for the continuous movement of migrants up north. The first one is the instability in the regions from which they originate. Countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia and Syria top the charts. The latter’s figures are greater than second place Afghanistan’s by almost fourfold, something understandable given the situation in the troubled Middle Eastern nation. The second reason is the increased capacity of the boats: this past April, for the first time during the long crisis, more people have died on a single vessel than in the totality of previous years. The shipwreck of the 13th April saw the disappearance of five hundred people in one sitting. If we compare this to 2013’s total toll of just over four hundred people, we are struck by gravity of the situation: we are not even midway through the year and already the death count from two years ago has been surpassed by one single incident. The third reason for this is the lack of control from the departing borders themselves. The ease with which opportunistic smugglers are able to set boats sailing from the various North African coasts is astounding. The response from the European governments has been that of every year: a lot of mourning and public grief, but little framework of action up to this point. The Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi publicly denounced the unfortunate event, which he categorised as “a new slave trade”, Britain’s David Cameron urged to “go after traffickers (and) help stabilise these countries” and Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Europe to find “answers” to this crisis. Yet identifying the problem will do little to appease the matters if there is no action taken. Ahead of a meeting by the European Commission (E.C.), some initial tentative proposals have been brought to the discussion table, ranging from an increase in vigilance to greater cooperation with the countries of origin. However, this is nothing new, year after year the E.C. continues its reactive (as opposed to proactive) approach to migration problems and year after year, we continue to see the inefficiency of this method.

The Sailing Club Hua Hin Welcomes the 2015 Regatta It seems strange that since the year 2000 there has been an Annual Sailing Regatta in Hua Hin, but no Hua Hin Sailing Club. This year things have changed! The Sailing Club Hua Hin ‘opened its sails’ in January this year and welcomed the 2015 Hua Hin Sailing Regatta with the chance to put the Club on the national and international sailing map. The Club is the only sailing club on the West Coast of the Gulf of Thailand. This Hua Hin Regatta 2015 was held in April to honour of His Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej who excelled in sailing. Over 300 competitors from across Thailand and many

other Asian as well as European countries took part. The organising authority was The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT), in conjunction with the Royal Thai Navy, Tourist Authority of Thailand, ChaAm Municipality and Phetchaburi Province. During the Regatta Royal Thai Navy ships were chaperoning the fleet off-shore and the eager helping hands of navy sailors provided the first greeting and for returning competitors.

But racing regattas are not really what the Sailing Club Hua Hin is all about. The founder Richard Vine describes the Club as “a family club where everyone can learn to sail from 8 – 80 years. But it’s about much more than just sailing, it’s a great place on the beach with cool shade, a trendy bar and a laid back atmosphere where all the family can enjoy the facilities shooting the breeze with their fellow club members.” “Our goal is to bring sailing to a wider audience in Thailand. Our club is to become a centre

of excellence to help kids develop all the personal skills necessary for handling a boat.” Club Members will have preferential rates for sailing courses and also for renting the Club’s boats. Members will be able to bring and store their own boats securely. Members can participate in the regular regattas organised by the Club, be able to enjoy the cool deck, bar and restaurant as well as make use of the showers and changing facilities. 20 Continued from Cover Page Baifearn Meeyousamsen is the Club’s Royal Yachting Association qualified Chief Instructor. Fearn is the daughter of the coach of the Thai national squad and has been in boats all her life. She is currently ranked No 2 in Thailand in Laser Radials and is a regular participant in Asian International Regattas. She brings a bubbly personality to the club and loves being around kids. She is currently completing her degree in Sports Management. Richard is an English ‘old salt’ with a wealth of sailing experience. He taught sailing for three years at Club Med in the 1970’s, discovering the pleasure of sailing in warm water. Having lived in Hua Hin for 10 years he was surprised that there were no sail boats on the waters. As retirement loomed he bought a Laser for himself and an Optimist for his son. In the Hua Hin Regatta in 2013 he saw 130 kids from Bangkok, Pattaya and Sattahip competing in their Optimists and decided that Hua Hin needed a sailing club. Both father and son were competitive sailors in the 2015 Regatta. In 2014, Richard successfully negotiated a deal to take over a prime piece of ocean frontage land, built the necessary hospitality, storage and launching infrastructure and now manages the idyllic Club premises. This a great place to savour

the ocean breezes and action or just to relax, enjoy a drink or something to eat at the ‘Eight Bells’ Bar and restaurant. (Eight bells is the signal that your sailing watch is over and you can relax.) The Sailing Club Hua Hin is an informal and very welcoming venue for visitors and Club Members alike; the sort of place you can adopt as your own and become a ‘regular’, even if you’re not sailing. 21 Floating Buildings Designed For Rising Sea Levels The floating markets of Thailand may well be the inspiration for a new generation of floating buildings being designed and built around the world.

Parts of Bangkok are at risk of getting submerged permanently in the next 30 years because due to land subsidence coupled with rising sea level, said Associate Professor Vichitbusaba Marom, a town planning expert at Thammasat University. She pointed out that sea level has been rising at an average of 5 mm annually while land in Bangkok has been subsiding at an average of 2-28 mm a year with the western side of the Chao Phraya river subsiding at more than 10 mm annually compared to an average of 15 mm on the eastern side. Land subsidence in industrial areas is faster, averaging 30 mm a year, said the professor, adding that this means, in the next 30 years, parts of Bangkok will be under water. She pointed out that another factor contributing to greater risk of flooding is rain and water runoff from the north and quick urban development such as construction of buildings that block the natural flow of water.

Sea level rise and flooding rivers due to global warming and deforestation cause problems in several Asian, SouthAmerican and European countries. Floating constructions protect people and workers in high risk areas, allowing durable, sustainable development of vulnerable natural areas at the same time. For European countries several floating constructions have been designed such as floating buildings in Amsterdam, a Yacht hotel and a semi floating apartment, where a special hydraulic system stabilises the position of the house during storm, waves and water tides, assuring a comfortable living without any ship-like behaviour of the house. Floating constructions are also applicable for expanding cities such as Oslo or tourist resorts in Sri Lanka, where a resort with prefab floating islands has been designed, causing no damage to the environment.

In Thailand, Kanchanaburi has long taken advantage of floating buildings for hotel options on the river. Architects and engineers are now increasingly turning their attention to more modern designs for the future.

Not only motivated by concerns about rising sea levels, but also faced with population growth and urban land shortages.

Here are just some of the floating building concepts for the future.

‘Building Bridges’ Thailand

‘Building Relationships, Understanding, Trust & Cooperation between Foreign Residents and the Thai Community’ His ideas have now been embraced by a group of Cha-Am residents, both foreigners and Thai. ‘Building Bridges Thailand’ is the name of a new organisation which aims to help foreign residents and members of the Thai community better understand and cooperate with each other. The chosen name is about ‘outreach’ and ‘bringing together’ people from differing cultures. The group has held initial meetings and drafted the following aims as a first step:

The Chief District Officer of the ChaAm District, Petchaburi Province wants a practical way for foreign and Thai communities in Cha-Am to help each other live in harmony. Khun Pittaya Wongkraisritong is mindful that in coming years there

is likely to be a rapid growth in the number of foreign residents in Cha-Am. He’s thinking ahead and wants to avoid future conflict and misunderstanding between foreign and Thai communities. “Misunderstandings lead to suspicion and suspicion leads to conflict”.

1. To increase the knowledge and understanding by foreigners of Thai culture, law, services and lifestyle. 2. To improve communication and links between foreigners and Thai organisations/agencies. 3. To help Thai organisations and agencies understand the issues facing foreign residents. 4. To increase the participation of foreign residents in the Thai community. 5. To provide a forum to discuss issues for foreigners living in Thailand.

6. To arrange targeted practical assistance for foreigners. Staff of the Cha-Am District Office (Petchaburi Province) will provide assistance to ensure that the organisation has legitimacy and legal status. The involvement of the Cha-Am Police and municipal government will also be crucial elements in achieving this legitimacy. The founding Members of the group will next develop clear practical strategies and want to emphasize that this will not be a complaints forum or ‘talk-fest’. In the coming future Building Bridges will provide practical ways that foreign residents and the Thai community can better understand and get along with each other.

‘Building Relationships, Understanding, Trust & Cooperation between Foreign Residents and the Thai Community’ There are over 300 species of butterflies that can be found in the park. At this time of the year they flock together around areas which still have patches of moist ground which become salty and provide the best conditions for butterflies to feed and warm their wings on the sunlight. Later in the day they are more easily

alarmed and take to the wing before they can be closely observed. The best time to observe butterflies is around 8.00 AM in the morning although this varies between species so anything between 8 and 10 AM or even later is OK. Ban Krang camp is one of the best viewing areas. However park visitors can find butterflies eating on flowers, especially, of shrubs along pathways or wet areas, on wet sand and soil near streams, and other large butterfly feeding places. They may take flight and quickly fly off in a cloud of colour when disturbed, but some patience may be rewarding as they are likely to soon land nearby.

Well prepared visitors who are quiet and move slowly will find butterfly more easily. Dress to be harmonious with nature and not so easily observed by the butterflies. You will get closer with green, gray or brown coloured outfits. It is also worth considering long sleeved shirts and full-length trousers for protection and comfortable shoes to prevent against insect bites and the rough terrain. And of course don’t forget your camera. The colours on mass display are amazing and well worth composing that perfect shot. You can call the park for more information at 032 459 293.

The 25th April 2015 marked the 100th ANZAC day. Events during World War II near Kanchanaburi means that each year soldiers from many different nations who fought and died on the Burma Railway and the Bridge over the River Kwai are remembered each year on this day. What does ‘ANZAC’ stand for? ‘ANZAC’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. On the 25th of April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. These became known as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this day. Why is this day special to Australians? On the morning of 25 April 1915, the Anzacs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and an ally of Germany. At the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli and the events that followed had a profound impact on Australians at home. The 25th of April soon became the day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who had died in the war. What does Anzac Day mean today? With the coming of the Second World War, Anzac Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war. The meaning of Anzac Day today includes the remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations. What happens on ANZAC Day? Anzac Day remembrance takes two forms. Commemorative services are held at dawn – the time of the original landing in Gallipoli – across the nation. Later in the day, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in marches through the major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal and are held at war memorials around the country and in many other fields of conflict. About The Burma Railway The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, was 415 kilometres Long from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat Burma, built by the Empire of Japan in 1943, to support its forces in the Burma campaign of World War II. Forced labour was used in its construction. More than 180,000—possibly many more—Asian civilian labourers and 60,000 Allied prisoners of war (POWs) worked on the railway. Of these, estimates of Asian labourers who died are little more than guesses, but probably about 90,000. 12,621 Allied POWs died during the construction.

The dead POWs included 6,904 British personnel, 2,802 Australians, 2,782 Dutch, and 133 Americans. The brutal use of prisoners of war was one of the worst atrocities of the Second World War In Kanchanaburi, Thailand, a dawn service is held at Hellfire Pass, a rock cutting dug by allied Prisoners of War and Asian labourers. This cutting is where the greatest number of lives were lost during railway construction. The dawn service is followed by a “gunfire breakfast” (coffee with a shot (or two) of rum) recalling the ‘breakfast’ taken by many soldiers before facing battle. At 11 am a second ceremony is held at the main POW cemetery in the city of Kanchanaburi, where 6,982 POWs are buried, mostly British, Australian, Dutch and Canadians. Several museums are dedicated to those who perished building the railway. The largest of these is at Hellfire Pass (north of the current terminus at Nam Tok), a cutting where the greatest number of lives were lost. An Australian memorial is at Hellfire Pass. Two other museums are in Kanchanaburi: the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum, opened in March 2003, and the JEATH War Museum. There is a memorial plaque at the Kwai bridge itself and an historic wartime steam locomotive is on display.

Our Impressions It doesn’t really matter how dismissive or dispassionate you may be, the Kanchanaburi experience effects anyone. From the immaculately maintained cemetery grounds to stark displays at the museums to the grim reality of Hellfire Pass, you will be humbled by a visit at any time of the year. But this year the pilgrimage by the thousands of all ages who came to Kanchanaburi lifted sombre yet proud feelings and emotions to another level. But for me it wasn’t about the dawn candle-lit ceremony, the memories of Ex POW Neil McPherson OAM, the wreathlaying, the Reveille by the Royal Thai Army buglers, or mixing with the crowds swapping stories. Nor was it about the sausage sizzles, bar BQs, beers, big bikes burn-out, cricket or Aussie Rules football game.

For me ANZAC Day 2015 was about a poignant moment when I hesitated at the headstone of WX4267 Private J.P. Murphy, a soldier who lost his life in 1943 in a foreign land far from his home in North Fremantle, Western Australia. That’s my home town and that was when reality dawned as my ‘goose-bump’ time of reflection. HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

Transport Minister ACM Prajin Juntong has instructed the Harbor Department to speed up the design and study of a project to build ferry piers to link Pattaya, Cha-am and Hua Hin. Prajin gave the order in his capacity as the economic division chief of the National Council for Peace and Order. Prajin said he wants the study to be done as soon as possible because the ferry piers would link the two sides of Thailand and boost tourism and the economy and trades in Pattaya, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. The Minister said the ferry boats would cut time of travelling between Pattaya to Cha-am and Hua Hin from around six and seven hours to just three hours. “The Harbor Department has studied it in 2012 so it has a development plan in line

with the NCPO’s policy to develop ferry piers to link the upper Gulf of Thailand to the eastern and western coasts,” Prajin said. He said the Bali Hai pier and Ocean Marina might be chosen as the site for the ferry pier in Pattaya and the Puktian Beach in Petchaburi might be selected for the ferry pier for Cha-am and Hua Hin. Prajin said the Harbor Department will now hire a private firm to study and design the piers and select proper sites for the project. The study would be sped up to be completed in 12 months instead of 18 months as initially planned. He said so far Siam Eastern Logistic Terminal has expressed its interest to invest Bt4 billion for the project.

30 Coconut Water - Some Important Benefits

Coconut water is the ultimate thirst quencher and offers a tasty alternative to water. This pure liquid is packed with nutrients that yield an array of health benefits. Here are 8 Benefits of Coconut Water that explain why it has become so popular: 1. Aids in Weight-loss Efforts. The fat content in coconut water is extremely low, so generous quantities can be consumed without the fear of immediately packing on the pounds. It also suppresses the appetite and makes you feel full because of its rich nature. 2. Picture-Perfect Skin. For those with acne or other blemishes on the surface of the skin, topical application of coconut water has the ability to clear up and subsequently tone the skin. It also moisturizes the skin from within if ingested orally and eliminates large amounts of oil. This explains why products such as facial creams, shampoos, conditioners and lotions that contain traces of coconut extract are more effective. 3. The Ultimate Hangover Remedy. Next time you overdo it and drink more than your belly can handle, consume coconut water to settle your stomach. It will also replace those essential electrolytes that exit the body if you experience bouts of frequent urination and vomiting. 4. Facilitates Digestion. If you constantly encounter difficulty during the digestion process, coconut water may provide a source of relief. Because of its high concentration of fibre, it aids in the prevention of indigestion and reduces the occurrence of acid reflux. 5. Boosts Hydration. The ingredients in coconut water are way more effective at hydrating the human body than those of sports and energy drinks. During rigorous exercise or extended periods of physical activity, the human body loses mineral-rich fluids. However, coconut water serves as an excellent replacement medium with 294 mg of potassium and 5 mg of natural sugar per glass, unlike your favorite

sports drink that only contains half of the potassium content and five times the amount of processed sugar. In addition, the sodium count is only 25 mg, which is relatively low compared to the 41 and 20 mg found in sports drinks and energy drinks respectively. 6. Reduces Blood Pressure. In many instances, a disproportionate level of electrolytes can result in high blood pressure. Because coconut water contains an adequate supply of each, it can be used as a balancing mechanism. In some instances, it is recommended that coconut water be consumed at the start of each day to foster the balance of these electrolytes. 7. Rich in Nutrients. Unlike any other beverage on the market, coconut water contains five essential electrolytes that are present in the human body. These include: calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and sodium. Because of its unique composition, coconut water can be enjoyed by individuals with varying medical conditions. 8. Compatible with Human Blood. Since it is isotonic to human plasma, coconut water can be used in extreme emergencies to quickly rehydrate the human body if administered intravenously. It is not uncommon for the drink to be used in poorer, thirdworld countries to save human lives. How Much Should You Consume? Coconut water can be enjoyed as a stand-alone beverage or combined with another liquid product. There is no hard and fast rule regarding the amount that should be consumed on a daily basis, but experts from the Mayo Clinic strongly suggest that you consider maintaining an active lifestyle if consuming large amounts of coconut water since each eight ounce serving is accompanied by 45 to 60 calories. When searching for the perfect fresh

coconut to enjoy, be sure to steer clear of those that have a hard brown shell as this is an indication that it is mature. Instead, look for those that are young and green on the exterior as they usually contain a large supply of the actual coconut water substance. To test it out, simply shake the coconut up and down to gauge how much liquid it contains.

Brain inflammation is suspected to be one of the leading causes of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric supports overall brain health by aiding in the removal of plaque build-up in the brain and improving the flow of oxygen. This can also prevent or slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. 9. Improves Digestion Many key components in turmeric stimulate the gallbladder to produce bile, which then improves digestion and reduces symptoms of bloating and gas. Also, turmeric is helpful in treating most forms of inflammatory bowel disease including ulcerative colitis. 10. Prevents Liver Disease The liver detoxifies the blood through the production of enzymes and turmeric increases production of these vital enzymes. These vital enzymes break down and reduce toxins in the body. Turmeric also is believed to invigorate and improve blood circulation. All of these factors support good liver health.

This method is a Thai tradition which has been passed on from generation to generation. Open: 10 AM – 12.30 AM. Address: 67/3-4 Phetkasem Rd., Hua Hin Phone: 032 516 666

Sleep Wisely

People tend to spend most of their time at school, work or with other activities and are so busy that they forget to get enough rest and ignore the importance of sleep. Getting enough sleep is one of the most important thing in our lives and the best life battery charger. When you get enough sleep, the benefits are likely to include improving your immunity to hazardous diseases, feeling brighter and having an improved memory. Not having enough sleep will impede your immune system. It may also cause you to become unstable, have reduced concentration and even adversely affect your skin causing premature aging. Sleeping is the stage where the body decreases its own perception, has less or even no movement, and less response to stimulation. While we are sleeping, our body behaves in a very calm way, our eyes will be shut, our body will be at rest, our heart rate will drop and we will breath slower. This can changed easily. We can be awoken by perceiving stimulation. Normally people spend one third of their time each day asleep. The question is how to sleep wisely? First we have to start by changing our attitude toward sleeping by sleeping more. Think of it as a life battery charger that will make you feel fresher and brighter the next day. If you think sleeping late at night and waking up late in the morning means getting a good sleep because you get the same hours of sleep compared with sleeping early at night and waking early in the morning, you are wrong. Because sleeping early at night will make your body be more active and energetic. The best sleeping time is from 22.00 hours to 06.00 hours because your body will get a full rest from a deep sleep in the first half of sleep. Sleeping on time will become a habit, making your body systems work more effectively. The environment of your bedroom is also important for you to get a good rest. Start with the selection of your bed and a pillow that suit your body. The size of the bed should provide enough comfort while you are sleeping. It is suggested that you should use a mattress pad because the texture is not too soft or too hard. The pillow should be soft and support the cervical spine to be in normal curve.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

Another suggestion is to change your bed sheets and pillow sheets frequently or have it washed every week to reduce the accumulation of dust and mites which may cause allergies and pimples. You should dim your bedroom lights for about an hour before you will go to sleep to tell your brain that it is resting time. Turn your air condition to a temperature that is not too hot and not too cold, and do not forget to turn off the television before you go to bed to avoid any disturbance from light and sound. You should not bring any electronic devices or items such as a computer or worktable into your bedroom because these may make you feel anxious which may result in insomnia. Your sleeping position needs to be correct as the muscles around your neck will loosen up while you are asleep. If you sleep in a bad position, you might experience neck pain. The best sleeping gesture is ‘Right Lateral Decubitus’ or ‘lie on your right side’ because it will make your heart pump easier, food in your stomach will be sent through to your small intestine better and it may also help with the backache. The sleeping position that should be avoided is prostration because it will lead to shortness of breath and neck pain. Preparation before going to bed is also important. Consider having a warm bath to help loosen up your muscles and relax your mind; wear comfortable pajamas that do not irritate your skin; have a drinks such as warm milk that will make you feel more relaxed or drink clean warm water to wash away the residue in your intestine and stomach. Please try these tips at home so that you have a great sleep and wake up fresh on the next day!

36 Exploring Koh Chang The island of Ko Chang is a tropical marine national park. Its hinterland consists of over 70% virgin rainforest and is the best preserved tourist holiday destination in Thailand. Situated to the east of the country in the province of Trat on the Cambodian border, it’s Thailand’s second largest island after Phuket. With its chain of white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests and abundance of wildlife and marine life, coral reefs, high mountain peaks, several scenic waterfalls, a rich variety of cuisine and great nightlife, Ko Chang is one of Thailand’s most sought-after holiday destinations. Accommodation on the island ranges from simple beach huts and bungalows to luxury villas, suites and apartments. If you drive, you can hire motorbikes, jeeps and cars to take you to any of the beaches along the coastal roads and, in the evening, there are

plenty of restaurants, live music bars and nightclubs to choose from to spice up your holiday. Koh Chang isn’t a small island and all the beaches have a different vibe. Most visitors will have a clear favourite that suits their style of travelling and meets their expectations in terms of level of development and the type of accommodation, amenities and facilities are on offer in the nearby area. Choosing where you stay is important. Here’s a brief summary of Ko Chang locations to consider before you go. North White Sand Beach: The most developed and busiest beach on the island is a true tropical Thai paradise. The far northern end of the beach is with some funky, budget bungalows hugging the hillside and a very nice stretch of sand at White Sand Beach Resort.

South White Sand Beach:, If your idea of holiday activities consists mainly of lounging in a deckchair, drinking cocktails and knocking back copious amounts of BBQ seafood nightly, then this is for you. Pearl Beach: This is the strip of stoney shoreline between White Sand Beach and Klong Prao. No sand here but a couple of nicer boutique resorts and some pretty good value accommodation. A good option if you already know the island or are planning an extended stay. Snorkelling is possible on the small reef just offshore. Kai Bae Beach: Not quite as busy as White Sand beach but, although it attracts a different type of visitor. More for older backpackers or families who prefer either a boutique resort or beach bungalow rather than hotel environment. Lots of options for eating and drinking, but the beach itself isn’t as good as those further north. Lonely Beach: If you’re on a limited budget and want to spend more on food and drink per day than your accommodation then head here. Basic huts clustered amongst reggae bars, tattoo parlours and cheap eateries. Most accommodation is away from the actual sandy beach and many HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

bungalow resorts are now moving more upmarket to cater to the ‘flashpacker’ crowd who like a hot shower, wifi and windows in their bungalow. Bailan: The sleepy, backward younger brother of Lonely Beach, 2km to the north. Basic huts and some more comfortable bungalows for those who want peace and quiet on a budget. Bangbao: Koh Chang’s very own ‘Ye Olde Fashioned Quaint Fishing Village’ – in the minds of people who have never been to Thailand before. This is the main setting off point for most dive and snorkeling trips. Around the bay are a handful of quieter places to stay – notably on the headland to the west. Salakphet: Huge bay in the south east of the island. Home to yachts and a small marina and a fisherman’s villages and a few good places to eat on the western shores. Also a couple of waterfalls that are free to enter, one of which is the tallest on the island and rarely visited. Not a touristy area but it really should be on your itinerary if you want to see more of Koh Chang than just the souvenir shops and beaches.

38 Driving The All-New Ford EcoSport To (But Not Across) The Border Rather than just reading reports or official notifications about the status of the Singkhon Border Crossing, we were presented with the perfect opportunity to check out the current reality with a test drive of the latest Ford EcoSport to the border. The opening of this Singkhon Border Crossing as a major point of transit between Thailand and Myanmar is eagerly awaited as an important development in the process of connecting Myanmar with the rest of the ASEAN world. It’s apparent from the number of speculative media reports that that many are eagerly keeping their eye on any progress. The feeling in the air at the small, dusty market scene at the border is one of anticipation. Improvements and expansion of the market buildings and infrastructure seems cautious. It’s happening, but hesitant and really awaiting an official inter-government announcement of the green light to be absolutely sure. Naïve questions to border officials were greeted with bemusement, they have been asked a thousand times before and until someone on high lets them know, no comment or speculations about the future way they will do business are worth them considering. The bottom line is that only Thai or Myanmar citizens can now legally make a short term crossing. Local and Provincial governments can only lobby for an early positive inter-government announcement. We were feeling self-conscious driving the all new ‘Mars Red’ (more like a ‘burnt

orange’) EcoSport with a ‘Test Car’ banner across the windscreen. Rather exotic amongst the less salubrious commercial vehicles checking out the market wares and the occasional busload of shoppers. The looks on the painted faces of the Burmese stall holders was one of “where do you think you are going?” Maybe asking the silly question about whether we could drive across the border (No!) was not such a good idea, we weren’t really thinking of taking the test vehicle out of the country! However when the time comes, the Ford EcoSport will be the ideal vehicle for a trip into Myanmar and the prospects of exploring the Andaman islands and western coast of the peninsular. The market itself was a little underwhelming. Stalls were dominated by those selling a variety of ‘gemstones’, low grade jewelry, wooden furniture and dubious cosmetics. The plant nurseries seemed more promising with orchids and other board-mounted epiphytic plants being prominent. Is it worth the drive for market shopping? We would say not yet! The road through Pranburi and beyond is not good with a Pranburi by-pass already an urgent requirement. Multiple intersections with traffic lights through the city centre lead to lengthy delays with nose to tail traffic regardless of the

day or time. Once the traffic becomes ‘strangled’ as the two main north-south routes become one, the road surface deteriorates and the need to negotiate heavily laden trucks lumbering down the highway becomes painful. . There are some serious infrastructure questions to be addressed before the border crossing becomes a reality and traffic volume becomes overwhelming. The good news was the EcoSport manages the current conditions in its stride. A solid continental, European feel thanks to the high-strength boron steel body and mechanicals translates to a ride without the jolts and jars being experienced by others and more protection for the car’s occupants. Time spent in a calm, spacious and comfortable interior passes quickly and the 100 kilometre journey from Hua Hin to Singkhon was a breeze. A smooth six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission suffers no loss of power between changes. Quick downshifting when overtaking 10-wheel trucks or managing hilly terrain, sweet steering and the slightly stiff suspension made this a fun car to drive. My only problem was remembering the indicator stalk was on the left of the steering column, it’s a bit embarrassing when the windscreen wipers are mistakenly used to signal a lane change! HUA HIN TODAY, May 2015

Some Ford EcoSport Details: Engine: A 1.5-litre 4-cylinder Ford Duratec engine with 110 horsepower and front wheel drive. Torque: 142 Nm. Transmission: 6-speed automatic Top speed: 165 km/h Fuel consumption: 14-17 kpl Compact dimensions: 4.2 metres long, 1.7 metres wide, ground clearance: 200mm. Leather-accented quality seats, a commanding position for the driver with plenty of room. Four passengers comfortable – five maximum. Price: 844,000 THB “Based on Ford’s global B-segment platform, the EcoSport urban SUV will appeal to people with a strong streak of independence who love exploring the world at large,” said Yukontorn ‘Vickie’ Wisadkosin, Managing Director, Ford Thailand. “Combining small-car practicality with the agility of a SUV, it delivers a segment-leading package of quality, safety, fuel-economy and value.” Our thanks to Khun Vorapoj Pranthanachai, the Ford JorCharoen Prachuabkirikhan General Manager, for the opportunity to take this great vehicle to the border, maybe a crossing next time - only joking!
