Showdown at the HomeTeamNS Strongman Challenge 2012

U

rrhh! Heaves and grunts filled the Toa Payoh HDB Hub Atrium on 24 March as men and women flipped tyres, towed vehicles and muscled their way to glory in the finals of this year’s Strongman Challenge. This signature event by HomeTeamNS drew a crowd of thousands, who cheered the contenders on as they threw their weight around. Heartland cheer It wasn’t just the finalists who tested their limits. Members of the public had fun with the side activities, which included pulling a Mazda 2 car in the shortest time and holding a 90kg barrel for as long as possible. Children also had a field day on the Home Team vehicles on display as parents took pictures on their handphones. “My son and daughter

2

loved playing fireman and policeman on the Red Rhino and Police Jeep,” said sales manager Jasmine Teo, 32. “We also had fun watching the contestants do all these crazy things – especially the ladies!”

Singapore’s strongest women (from left): second runner-up Nur Syazwani, champion Sophia Ong and first runner-up Cheryl Foo.

SCDF NSman Yusri Bin Ali was one of only two finalists who pulled the Red Rhino for the full distance of 15 metres. Upsized challenges Now in its eighth year, this year’s competition was the toughest yet. In the Stamford Tyre Flip event, contestants now need to flip a 350kg tyre, up from last year’s 280kg tyre. The 3M Scotch Log Walk now requires them to carry a 120kg log, up from last year’s 100kg. This year’s competition also saw a new challenge called the Samsui Yoke Walk, where contestants need to walk with a 300kg yoke and then unload two 100kg barrels into two boxes. The greatest upsize was made to the SCDF Red Rhino Pull. Instead of having to pull just one Red Rhino like last year, contestants now need to pull both a Red Rhino and a Police Jeep – a combined weight of six tonnes. This year’s competition also introduced some flower power for the first time. Ladies could now compete in

three events: the Mazda CX-7 Car Pull, Stamford Tyre Flip and 3M Scotch Log Walk. A strong showing Many of the male individual finalists were familiar faces in the Strongman Challenge. One of them was SCDF NSman and fitness trainer Yusri Bin Ali, who at 39 was the oldest contestant this year. The 2007 Strongman champion put up a strong showing despite a knee injury, and was one of only two finalists who managed to complete the Red Rhino and Police Jeep Pull. Due to the increased difficulty of the competition, not every finalist managed to complete all their challenges. The 3M Scotch Log Walk proved too tough for four contestants, and left more than one with bloodied fingers. Credit must

still go to all of them for pushing themselves to the max – in particular Malaysian Mohd Yusri, 28, who put up a heavyweight performance despite his diminutive weight of just 82kg. The strongest woman in Singapore was Sophia Ong, who beat five other ladies to clinch the title. “It’s cool to be the first woman to win this challenge!” said the 32-year-old IT planner, who only started training for strength and technique just before the preliminary round. The day’s top honour went to personal trainer Jen Li Sheng, who beat gym owner Samuel Lim by just one point to become Singapore’s strongest man. Jen was also the champion in 2008 and 2010. “I’d definitely want to come back and do this every year,” said Jen, 27. “I want to push myself while I’m still young.”

YOUNG TALENT - SCDF

BORN TO PERFORM From singing to dancing, contemporary to classical, LCP Derrick Tay does it all

As a musician with the SCDF’s Music Performing Art Club (MPAC), LCP (NSF) Derrick Tay sings, dances and plays the piano, guitar, Chinese flute and pipa. Frontline speaks to this well-rounded performer during one of his rehearsals.

What do you do in the SCDF?

I am an instructor at the Basic Rescue Training Centre at the National Service Training Institute, SCDF, where I train and take care of a section of recruits. It can be challenging to have to switch from one persona to another – one moment you’re an instructor in uniform, guiding your fellow NSFs, while another moment you’re a stage performer! I’m fortunate to be able to develop my musical talent in MPAC with the support of my company sergeant major WO1 John Curren, who oversees many of the MPAC performances. He was the one who made it possible for joint performances with my singing buddy, SPF field instructor CPL Benjamin Lim, as part of the Home Team.

How did you get started in music?

I played the Chinese flute in the Chinese orchestra when I was in primary school. Since then I have been regularly performing for corporate and wedding events at hotels, shopping malls and theatres. I was a baritone in my secondary school choir, and I played the Western flute as part of the concert band for Millennia Institute. As a part-time performer with Siong Leng Musical Association, I picked up a traditional style of music from southern China called Nan Yin, and learnt the pipa and the Liyuan style of opera. I am also professionally trained in pop singing at a pop music school.

What’s next in your music career?

Together with my singing partner, SPF field instructor Benjamin Lim, we plan to seek more opportunities in the music industry. I also intend to continue as a professional performer and vocal instructor.

Any advice for aspiring musicians out there?

Talent is nothing without passion and hard work. Nowadays it’s not enough to be good at just singing or playing – your body language and your stage presence are all part of the entire package. The performer is the performance, and you got to give your all every time. Check out Derrick Tay’s music here: www.facebook.com/heibaipei

MARTIAL LAW NSI Marcus Seah is a fighter – both on and off the ring

To NSI Marcus Seah, life is all about doing the best in whatever you do. Frontline speaks to this champion who packs a punch in whatever he does.

How did you get started in Muay Thai?

Six years ago, I joined a Chinese-style martial art course called Sanda when I was in Nanyang Polytechnic. Later I decided to try out Muay Thai at The Muaythai Workshop. After a few sessions of learning how to throw punches, roundhouse kicks and knee and elbow strikes in a controlled environment, I realised I had found something I truly enjoyed.

What do you like about Muay Thai?

Although I loved Sanda in poly, I wanted something more. Muay Thai was perfect for me as it was more aggressive and I could use maximum power in every move. With Muay Thai you get a complete workout. Your whole body aches but it feels so good, and you get a much greater runner’s high than kickboxing. It is also more practical if you need to use it on the streets – but of course the smart thing to do is to avoid trouble in the first place!

How did you become so good in what you do?

I’m fortunate to have great coaches and training buddies who guided me along. I also trained in a camp on the outskirts of Bangkok. There I immersed myself in the culture and learnt what it was like to train with people who fight for a living. At the camp, I did five hours of pads training and ran a total of 16km every day for a week. Soon I started fighting and winning matches on stage. I got more addicted, trained harder and won more.

What’s next in your fighting career?

I plan to continue teaching Muay Thai and improving myself in the sport. Even when I can no longer fight competitively, I will continue to practise it for the mental strength it gives me – not to mention it’s a fun and hardcore workout by itself.

Any advice for those who’d like to take up Muay Thai?

WORDS JEFFREY KONG PHOTOS THE MUAYTHAI WORKSHOP

Wear wraps and gloves to protect your wrists. Know your limit and don’t push yourself too hard, too fast. Muay Thai may be a deadly sport, but it’s also one that imparts values such as respect and humility. So go for it!

These chicken dishes are as much a local institution as national service. Celebrate the contributions of our feathered friends at these places!

NAM KEE CHICKEN RICE & RESTAURANT Few restaurants ooze more old-school charm than the tiled walls and quaint wooden seats of 40-yearold Nam Kee. The chicken is quintessential Hainanese – done to the right level of tenderness – and their ginger dip is simply divine. Their home-brewed water chestnut drink is also well worth a try. Price $3.60 Where 201 Upper Thomson Road Open Mon–Sun 11am–9pm;

For the uninitiated, ayam penyet refers to fried chicken that has been given some tenderising loving care – a good pummelling to loosen the meat from the bones. Many say Sari Bistari is one of the best places to try this battered bird, and from the oh-so-thin-and-crispy skin on tender flesh and zesty sambal chilli, it’s hard to disagree. This joint, which used to be at the food centre at Block 3, has only recently crossed the road to its current location at Block 5, as the food centre is under renovation till the fourth quarter of the year. MAT NOH (LORONG LIMAU) MUSLIM CHICKEN RICE Just $3 gets you a succulent drumstick with lots of crispy bits that lend a bit of crunch to every bite of fluffy rice. DRESS THE PART

Look good with these skincare tips There’s more to caring for your skin than you may think. Here are some easy tips to look your best!

Cleaning your face is as easy as 1-2-3! Step 1: Wash

Wash your face at least twice a day to remove oil and dirt that clog your pores. Use products formulated for men, such as those by Clinique, Garnier, L’Oréal and Olay. Avoid harsh soap. A cleanser with salicylic acid removes dead skin and reveals fresh skin beneath, while a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide or tea tree oil keeps acne at bay.

Step 2: Tone

Use a toner twice a day to remove excess oil, reduce shine, reduce pore size and tone the skin. Pour a little on a piece of cotton and dab it on your face and neck.

Step 3: Moisturise

Apply a moisturiser to keep your skin supple and smooth. These contain ingredients such as vitamin B5, glycerin and lecithin that nourish and protect the skin. Use it twice a day after toning.

Five secrets to better skin Hydrate

Drink eight glasses of water every day. Water plumps up the cells in your body, leaving your skin firm and supple.

Eat your greens

Fruit and vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals that keep your skin fresh and glowing. Nourish your face from the inside today!

Zzz

Not getting enough shut-eye gives you dark circles and makes you look a hundred years old. Get a good night’s rest and you’ll look much better. Now you know why the prince swooned over the sleeping beauty.

WORDS JEFFREY KONG PHOTO CORBIS

Stop puffing

A smoker’s face is not a parody of a Lady Gaga song – it’s a real medical term! Smoking depletes the vitamin C that your body needs to form collagen.

Stop roasting

Get too much sun, and you run the risk of wrinkles and skin cancer. Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 20 and reapply it regularly.

Spa Le’Kraton at HomeTeamNS @ Bukit Batok Did you know you can fix rough, wrinkling and dulllooking skin right here at the Bukit Batok Clubhouse? Spa Le’Kraton offers a range of intense treatments to complement your daily skincare regime. Its Intense Lift RF Treatment reverses wrinkling and sagging, while the Pro-Apeel Treatment uses micro-dermabrasion to restore glow to the skin. There’s also an Intense Red Treatment for acne and clogged pores. All HomeTeamNS members will enjoy a 30% discount! The spa also offers a special 60% discount to all members for their first trial.

PICK-UP LINES Use them at your own risk!

Does the following scenario sound familiar to you? A guy goes up to a girl in a club and says: “You’re so nice, you must be from paradise”.  The girl rolls her eyes so far back that she almost faints, responds with a snide remark, and walks away in disgust… Nothing puts off a girl faster than a corny pick-up line. Contrary to what you read in men’s magazines, we do not like pick-up lines. They’re tacky, cheesy, insincere and at times even downright offensive. Guys who like sprouting clichéd pick-up lines should be careful they don’t get a black eye.

Pick-up lines that are Walking her dog: “What a sure to fail

At a restaurant: At a club: “That’s “Who needs dessert your favourite song? when they have you?” It’s mine too!” At a place of worship: “Wow, my prayers have finally been answered!”

At the library or bookstore: “Oh… (insert the name of author she is looking at) is my favourite author too! I love her last book!”

Here’s our advice. Instead of memorising a bunch of one-liners in the hope of impressing the ladies, just be yourself. Speak from your heart. Women like a guy who’s confident but not arrogant; smart but not a show-off. So have fun, be yourself and you might just make some new friends!

Immortalise your love with an original song. The School of Music and the Arts (SOMA) can help you with the words and music to your song, and record and mix your vocals in a pro recording studio. If you’d prefer to write it yourself, SOMA’s popular Songwriting and Production Analysis course is a great introduction to creating your own hit. For those who dream of sharing the stage, there’s Timbre Music Academy, where real musicians show you how to perform live as a singer, guitarist, bassist or drummer, and do just that in front of a live audience every Sunday.

HomeTeamNS vs SAFRA Annual Interclub Match

From left: Clarence Tan (SAFRA), Calvin Siow and Jayaram Suppiah (HomeTeamNS), and Lawrence Young (SAFRA).

HomeTeamNS finally managed to beat SAFRA on their home turf NSRCC Kranji with a score of 11–9. The game was based on 20 matches in the Single Match Play format. It was a close fight as HomeTeamNS had two matches one down till the 18th hole. The two HomeTeamNS players managed to win and eventually squared the games to secure half a point each. There was also plenty of drama in the field when our player, Steve Tay, managed to catch a birdie, but lost the hole when his opponent chipped in for an eagle! Everyone had a good time and enjoyed the camaraderie between the two golfing groups. After the game, the players were rewarded with a sumptuous dinner at D’Kranji Farm Seafood restaurant.

Invited guest Craig Marshall (rightmost) giving tips on chipping and putting.

Thank you to our SAFRA buddies for organising the game, prizes and dinner. Well done to our 20 HomeTeamNS players for winning the challenge trophy! soulful voice filled the stage in harmony with drums and guitars. With their rendition of “Don’t Stop Believing” by the rock band Journey, the group of five male singers and their accompanying band received a rousing applause from the audience. This may sound like a regular concert, but this was no ordinary performance. The musicians and singers were inmates from the Singapore Prison Service’s (SPS) Performing Arts Centre (PAC), which trains inmates with talents in music and the performing arts. They were performing in the auditorium of Changi Prison Complex’s Cluster A to a group of about 40 volunteers from different Home Team departments. This was part of the Home Team Volunteers Network’s (HTVN) “Walking with the Home Team” series of visits – an initiative to let members understand Home Team agencies beyond the department they are volunteering with.

Rehab on the right note The PAC is part of the many rehab programmes available to help inmates reintegrate into society upon their release. Under this programme, inmates with musical talents receive training in music theory and performance. They are required to take the Grade Five music theory exam by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music at the end of their nine-month course. The guest of honour for the visit was Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, HTVN Chairman and former Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs. Speaking to HTVN members about the SPS’s motto, “Rehab, Renew, Restart”, he said it is important for the community to be part of the inmates’ reintegration process, and that the HTVN itself is one example of the community doing its part.

Skills for the future Volunteers got the chance to see a typical prison cell, the inmates’ recreational area and an industrial workshop within prison. While touring the cells, they learnt that prisoners are allowed to keep only a few items with them. These include towels and unbreakable toothbrushes and spoons. Rehabilitation Officer 2 (RO2) Jared Lee explained that basic living items and toiletries provided in the cell are designed to prevent inmates from using them to injure themselves and others. Next, the volunteers visited the industrial workshops in Changi Prison Cluster A. These workshops help to hone positive work ethics in inmates and equip them with vocational and employable skills. The Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) works with SPS to manage and facilitate traditional industrial setups such as the bakery and laundry, as well as new ones such as a call centre and a digital media design centre. According to statistics, in 2010 SCORE helped to train more than 4,000 inmates for post-release employment, and helped secure jobs for more than 1,000 inmates. Volunteers then checked out a printing and packaging workshop that was set up in Cluster A since August 2006. The setup currently employs 85 inmates.
