ith 14 action-packed rounds spanning 11 countries, the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship is the second-largest motorcycle racing championship in the world. Biking fans love it with a passion because it features specially tuned versions of production motorcycles – ‘real’ bikes, in other words – unlike MotoGP with its purpose-built, high-performance prototypes. For added excitement, there are four highly competitive categories – Superbike, Supersport, Superstock and a European Junior Cup for racers between 14 and 24 years old.

Recently announced as the official title sponsor of the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK), Motul will now allow teams to experience its wide range of racing oils and lubricants first-hand, which are already widely used through all forms of two-wheel racing across the globe. What’s more, Motul’s VIP guests will be treated to an immersive, behind-thescenes experience that takes them closer to the action. With exclusive access into the trackside hospitality suite to get up close and personal to the riders and their teams, the Motul WorldSBK Experience promises to be an unforgettable day out.

“I THINK CLIMBING HAS CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO MY NATIONAL SERVICE DUTIES AND TO OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES” 4

HIGH ACHIEVER Moiz Malik talks about his climbing passion, and how it’s helped him to constantly reach for his peak in all areas of life

PHOTO WONG WEILIANG/328 PRODUCTIONS PTE LTD

I

started climbing around 13 years old, when I saw a rock wall in a community centre during an open house. The instructor said that I have very long arms, an advantage if I wanted to be a rock climber. I thought it’d be a great hobby, so I started climbing regularly. Back then this was an expensive sport as it was relatively new. It was also expensive to buy my own set of equipment. So I climbed whenever my parents gave me pocket money. Nowadays, there are many climbing gyms in Singapore and equipment is cheaper, so it’s much easier to indulge in my passion. I make it a point to climb during the weekends and, depending on my friends’ availability, I also climb on weekdays and almost every day during the school holidays. Rock climbing is an intensive sport. I usually run to improve my stamina. For strength training I focus on my back

muscles and legs at the gym. I also do pull-ups and monkey-bars to strengthen my grip and my pulling motion. Core training is also important as I need a strong core to move efficiently. Finally, I do a lot of stretching to have a wide range of movements when I climb. I love climbing outdoors, so my favourite place for wall climbing (top rope or lead) is The Cliff at Snow City. If it rains or gets hazy, I visit Kinetics for bouldering sessions or Climb Asia for indoor climbing. I have also climbed on several occasions at the HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok Adventure Centre during open house or cohesion programmes. In addition, I climb regularly in climbing gyms or at natural sites in Malaysia, Krabi and London. My climbing buddies are fellow Home Team NSmen or long-time colleagues. It’s important to maintain a good relationship with your buddies as climbing is inherently dangerous, so you have to

THE ONLY WAY IS UP Reaching for your goals is never easy. If you feel you’re falling off the cliff of life, remember these steps: 1. Stop and relax 2. Get a good, stable foundation 3. Take the time to plan your next moves 4. Chalk up your hands (get ready to start) 5. Continue climbing onwards

count on them to keep you safe. I have a few friends whom I have known since my national service days; we took up the sport at the same time and even went into the same job. We meet regularly and plan climbing trips together. I take pride in having knowledge of and experience in the technical and pedagogy aspects of rock climbing. In 2014, I was appointed by the Singapore Mountaineering Federation (SMF) to lead a committee of instructors to create the SG-Coach Technical Programme Syllabus and revamp the Instructor Training Course written and practical assessments for both school coaches and certification instructors. At present, I conduct climbing certification courses in several climbing gyms in Singapore. In the near future, I hope to meet climbing communities in other countries and climb with them. I am also working with SMF to organise more climbing carnivals for children. Perhaps, some of these children will grow the climbing community even further in the future. I think climbing has contributed greatly to my national service duties and to other responsibilities, including my current job as outdoor programme manager at the Ministry of Education. That’s because the nature of the sport demands discipline and vigilance – both for your own safety and for others. Climbing is also about getting over challenges to reach the top, so it helps me to be resilient to changes, more appreciative and always on the lookout for new challenges. FRONTLINE 5

DRIVING ADVENTURE

“A

n exciting 3D2N adventure trip with lots of great food,” quipped Mr Anthony Wong. On the early morning of 28 November 2015, Mr Wilfred Yoong flagged off our convoy of 23 participants from the Bukit Batok Clubhouse. We drove straight for Sungai Klah Hot Spring Resort to relax our tired muscles. We also boiled some eggs with the mineral-enriched hot spring water. Thereafter, we had dinner at the Lou Wong chicken restaurant before checking into the Syeun hotel. The next day, we made a short trip

6

to view the wall art murals located at the lane between Jalan Masjid and Jalan Sultan Iskandar, toured the famous and scenic Taiping lake, and made an educational visit to a charcoal factory. We also went on a cultural tour of the Perak Museum. “I’m pleasantly surprised to learn that it was the Japanese who taught the locals how to make charcoal from red woods during the Second World War,” exclaimed Mr Edwin Ang. In the evening, we went to the fishing village nearby to shop and basked in the beautiful sunset. “We both thoroughly

enjoyed the fresh seafood: thumbs up!” said Mr Lim who joined the trip with his spouse. After breakfast on the final day, a lucky draw was conducted for all participants. A delighted Mrs Don Ang said, “I have gone on travel tours for twenty years, and this is the first time I’ve actually won a prize!“ We then visited the Sam Poh Buddha Cave, followed by shopping for the famous and sweet Ipoh red pomelo. In the evening, the participants had more shopping and a sumptuous dinner at Yong Peng before heading back to Singapore. Home sweet home.

A TERRIFIC T-PLAY DAY T

-Play is the latest addition to the newly renovated HomeTeamNS Clubhouse at Bukit Batok. This is a 4,200-square-foot indoor playground for kids from 6 months to 12 years old, designed and manufactured in Sweden. Being a huge fan of indoor playgrounds, I took my 2-year-old son to try out this new space. We were immediately greeted by a model A380 plane suspended from the ceiling and two large rockets. I figured the theme is Transportation, which is what the ‘T’ in T-Play stands for. The other obvious transport element is the

road network design on the floor, with zebra crossings, traffic lights and even a helipad. There are also Passport Control panels everywhere to prevent kids from running too fast, tubes and tunnels shaped like rockets, backdrops and panels with various vehicles, and even a Flight Arrival and Departure schedule. The 140 play elements in this playground means hours of fun! We first checked out the Toddler area. My son could independently climb the structures, go down the slides and tunnels, and plunge into the dense ball pit. As we sat in the ball pit, I heard the sound of planes and Control Room chatter. The source was a little box located at the top of the

The rest of the Toddler area is made up of soft structures to climb and some foam LEGO blocks, which we loved. They were sturdy enough to build structures and yet soft enough that babies won’t get hurt. In the other parts of the playground, there was a trampoline, a few large slides (including a two-storey spiral slide), and even a boulder wall. One of the friendly Play Leaders helped my son climb up the larger structures and supported him as he slid down. The best part of it for me was this: many playgrounds elsewhere are made

CNB officer escorting a suspected drug offender out of a nightclub during a raid

CNB’s Drug Warriors Home Team News joined Central Narcotics Bureau officers on a drug raid in a budget hotel and a nightspot for an exclusive look into a day in the life of a narcotics officer

20

H

ome Team News joined a team of Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers for two raids during their operation from 25 to 29 January 2016, and got an intimate look into the nature of their work. News reports of CNB’s drug seizures and suspect arrests belie the painstaking, thorough pre-operation preparation that entails tight inter-agency work, ground assessment of targeted venues, and studying of floor plans. One morning, CNB officers descended on selected hotels for drug raids, with a bag of equipment in tow. After scanning the guest list for suspects with drug antecedents, the officers swooped into the rooms with the aid of the hotel staff, securing the area before searching each room. Tell-tale signs of drug activity include empty sachets or straws strewn on the table. Most suspects were compliant, offering no resistance as the officers searched their room. Some were less cooperative. Roused from slumber, one angry suspect hurled a slew of profanities, warranting a firm rebuke from an officer to “mind [his] language”. Coolly, the officer reminded him that the team was just “doing their job”. Nightspots are another hotspot for raids. During one of their night

operations, CNB officers swiftly cordoned off a nightclub upon arrival. With the area secured, officers made their rounds screening patrons’ identification cards and conducting searches on them. “We narrow in on suspects by questioning and profiling them. We look out for signs of slurred speech and suspicious behaviour such as evasive replies and shifty eyes, and scan the environment for incriminating substances,” said Peter (not his real name), an officer in charge of intelligence. The raid at the nightclub that night saw 15 suspects whisked off in vans for urine tests. Managing tempers and raucous reactions while staying calm and professional is a veritable challenge these officers face on the job. “Patrons get rowdy under the influence of alcohol. They get upset that we spoil their fun for the night. We understand their frustrations but they need to show respect [to our officers] too,” said Peter, who is in his late 30s. According to him, guts and experience are important in managing and interrogating suspects. “Some people prefer a soft approach. You need to determine the type of treatment for each suspect based on their response,” he said. Through the course of his career with the CNB, Peter said he has not seen any officer harmed on the job. “Danger is kept to a minimum as the operations are wellplanned. Our officers’ safety is paramount,” he said. The father of two kids, aged 2 and 4, said his wife knows the general nature of his job but isn’t privy to the details of his work. While the action-packed life of drug raids and suspect-nabbing gives narcotics officers a tough guy image of rugged glamour, Peter is quick to dismiss the perceived “cool” factor of the job for a worthier purpose. “It’s not glamorous at all. We are just doing what we want to do in life – fight drugs. We’ve seen many cases of drugs causing harm to families. We have the passion to fight drugs and want to do our part,” he said.

he Best SCDF NS Unit Awards are given out annually by SCDF to recognise NSmen’s efforts, commitment and contribution towards a higher standard of ICT performance, surpassing other units. However, 41(A) Rescue Battalion’s record of achieving the award three times, in FY09/10, FY11/12 and FY13/14, is unprecedented. “Under the strong leadership of Rescue Battalion Commander COL (NS) Edwan Nizar, our men have always performed their NS duties with the mindset that they can make a difference and will always do their very best to excel. Winning the Best SCDF NS Unit Award the third time is a re-affirmation of this,” said MAJ (Dr) Mohamed Ghazali, ‘A’ Coy Medical Platoon Commander. Being entrusted with clear roles and responsibilities, NSmen understand that they can contribute to the unit in various ways. We began to think creatively, knowing that our input is valued. 41(A) Rescue Battalion imbued in us a deep sense of affiliation and a desire to contribute. In the various ICT call-ups over the past few years, the men had displayed teamwork, friendship and unity. According to CPT Md Ali, ‘A’ Coy Commander,

NS personnel from 41(A) Rescue Battalion sharpening their rescue skills during ICT

“Coming to ICT every year was like meeting old friends – a reunion of sorts. There was great camaraderie among the men and this was shown from the top leadership.” It was a great honour for our parent unit to receive the first trophy for being third-time winner of Best SCDF NS Unit Award. The trophy is inscribed with our NS Unit and the years in which we achieved the award. It instilled a tremendous sense of pride when our men saw the display of the trophy at our parent Div HQ. During the unit’s ICT in NSTI in September 2015, we held a special event to celebrate the success together over a sumptuous meal. COL (NS) Edwan Nizar presented a plaque, a mini replica of the Best SCDF NS Unit Award trophy for thirdtime winner, to the entire battalion. It is a memento that all our men cherish and will

remember for many more years to come. “All credit goes to the selfless, passionate and hardworking personnel of 41(A) Rescue Battalion. With every individual playing his part, together as a unit, we achieved this amazing feat,” said COL (NS) Edwan.

Off-Duty PNSF Assisted in Catching Bicycle Thieves SC/SGT Ahmad Safudin Bin Muhd Nor’s quick thinking led to the prevention of theft and the arrest of three suspects

22

O

n 17 January 2016 at about 0230hrs, Police National Service Full-Time (PNSF) officer SC/SGT Ahmad Safudin Bin Muhd Nor from Toa Payoh was on his way home after buying supper when he spotted two boys at the void deck of Block 306 Yishun. He noted the late hours and suspicious behaviour of the duo. Suspecting that they were up to no good, SC/SGT Ahmad observed the group covertly from the void deck opposite the block. Soon after, another male subject arrived to join the duo. Certain of their ill intent, SC/SGT Ahmad contacted Yishun NPC to inform them of the trio’s activities.

While awaiting the arrival of police resource, SC/SGT Ahmad kept his position, monitoring the activities of the three subjects. When they took a lift up at Block 306, he quickly proceeded to the block’s lift lobby to observe which floor the trio would stop at. He remained there to ensure the subjects were contained within the block and informed the police officers of the trio’s location. He assisted to secure the staircase landing at the ground floor while the officers conducted vertical policing. The subjects fled upon seeing the officers in the lift but were apprehended at the first-floor lift lobby. SC/SGT Ahmad positively identified the subjects and provided vital information to the police officers. The trio subsequently admitted to their intention to steal bicycle tyres. SC/SGT Ahmad’s alertness, keen observation and sense of responsibility, even while off-duty, led to the arrest of the three subjects. His training enabled him to work effectively with a team of officers he had no prior experience with. SC/SGT Ahmad’s actions are an example of the role PNSFs play in SPF, on- and off-duty, to prevent, detect and deter crime.

SSGT (NS) NAQIB NIZAR, 27 Section Commander, Yishun Fire Station Received SCDF Public Spiritedness Award 2015

Naqib Nizar enjoys a relaxed moment

Call of Duty Naqib Nizar’s firefighting training during National Service helps save the day when a car bursts into flames

I

have been a Section Commander at Yishun Fire Station since my fulltime NS days. My main role then was leading a section of four men to respond to various emergency calls. The biggest challenge of a firefighter’s job is to make split-second decisions every time we turn out for an emergency call. There can be no compromise when it comes to saving lives and property, so we have to be right up to the mark in all aspects of our

response. After a successful operation, I’d feel a great sense of accomplishment for having contributed meaningfully to the community. The training that I received during NS proved invaluable on the night of 22 September 2015. Shortly after having dinner with my fiancée at Yishun SAFRA, we heard a commotion in the car park. When I spotted flames and smoke coming out from the bonnet of a car, I instinctively grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed

to douse the flames engulfing the car. I also ran to get a nearby hose reel to put out the remaining embers, preventing further damage to the interior of the car and the surroundings before the SCDF Emergency Responders arrived. Thankfully, no other vehicles were damaged and nobody was hurt. I received an SCDF Public Spiritedness Award in recognition of my quick and timely response to that incident. That spurred me on to contribute my utmost in saving lives and preventing damage to property in an emergency situation whenever I can. After my full-time National Service, I pursued my degree in Business, majoring in Marketing. Currently I’m working as a marketing manager at an e-commerce company. I also provide free tuition under Mendaki on weekends as a way to contribute back to society. Do I have any words of advice for aspiring firefighters? I applaud anyone who chooses to take up firefighting as a career. It takes a lot of courage to face dangerous situations each day and to constantly risk your life for others. However, no words can express the amount of satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that you gain from keeping the community safe. FRONTLINE 23

MUHAMMAD NAUFAL BIN ROHMAT, 22 Person-In-Custody Officer ‘G’ Division, Ops Team Bravo

Naufal Rohmat (second from left, seated) posing with the other delegates

Fostering Unity One of four Singapore representatives at the 2015 ASEAN Youth Expo, Naufal Rohmat ponders issues of territorial claims on seawaters in the region

I

’m a Person-In-Custody Officer attached to Ops Team Bravo in ‘G’ Division. From 20 to 24 November last year, I represented Singapore at the ASEAN Youth Expo 2015, which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. I was one of the four delegates selected from out of more than 400 Singapore applicants. The ASEAN Youth Expo 2015 is an international event where representatives from the ASEAN countries meet to foster

24

better unity among ASEAN youths to ACT (Assemble, Cooperate and Thrive). The main theme at the four-day event was maritime matters in Asia and in the world. One issue highlighted was the disagreements over how to address territorial claims in the sea, which is claimed by China and in part by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei. Another pressing issue was China’s large gas field discovery in September

2014 in the contentious South China Sea, where Beijing continues to extract resources despite lingering territorial disputes with neighbouring countries. There were also talks by Indonesian entrepreneurs and CEOs of major Indonesian corporations on topics such as Sustainable Business, Marine Ideology and Modern Entrpreuneur. Together with the three other Singapore delegates, I also set up an exhibition booth where people could learn more about our country, its people and its culture. One of the initiatives that resulted from all the exchanges was the ASEAN Youth Foundation, which we started to help youths develop skills, create opportunities and have meaningful experiences. I was nominated to be the Secretary and the Chief Cultural Officer for the foundation. One of the major challenges during the Expo was a real-life case study involving a small business shop owner who sold dried sea creatures, such as sea shells and starfish, as souvenirs. We brainstormed solutions for how the owner could boost his sales and pitched our final proposal to a panel of judges and a convention of about one thousand people. I feel that NS has taught me to be punctual and thorough in all work that I do. I also learned to work well with people in a common task, which helped contribute to the success of our exhibition booth. Through my NS, I also learned to respect the cultures and opinions of people of various backgrounds. NS has also helped me to develop mental toughness, which has enabled me to improve my performance in every area of life. What advice would I give to youths today? “Don’t give up on your dreams as we are the leaders of the future.”

on the edge

I WILL SURVIVE!

Inspired by Running Wild with Bear Grylls and wilderness movie The Revenant, we get into survival mode

3

Number of broken vertebrae British adventurer Bear Grylls suffered in a parachuting accident when he was 23. Eight months later he conquered Everest

62 YEARS OLD

The age of Perth grandfather Reg Foggerdy when he survived six days without food or water in the Australian desert by eating black ants

40

133 DAYS Chinese sailor Poon Lim survived this long alone on an 8ft square raft in the South Atlantic during WWII. He even caught a shark and sucked its blood to quench his thirst!

360 KG The weight of the boulder that trapped Aron Ralston during an accident in the Utah desert in 2003. He had to free himself by amputating his own forearm using a dull pocketknife

USD

$10m

Living on the edge has its perks. Bear Grylls should easily survive on his currrent estimated fortune

How do mortals overcome an emergency in the wilderness? Think MacGyver meets Grizzly Adams. And a strong stomach certainly helps...
