When You Change, the World Around you Changes

Oftentimes, the difference in people's lives is the difference in the standards to which they hold themselves accountable. As Newton's Third Law of Motion dictates: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." It's that obvious and, equally, that simple, albeit often requiring a herculean effort to achieve herculean results.

Q: Give us a brief description/history of your business…. Baer Performance Marketing (BPM) is a full service marketing agency featuring a collaboration of marketing minds that provide businesses a comprehensive variety of services in the areas of marketing, advertising, public relations, digital and online resources, graphic design, photography and social media to name a few. At BPM, we work with businesses to determine the proper strategy for growth and work alongside them on execution. Every recommendation is carefully researched and each strategy is specifically designed for each business. We work with businesses in a wide variety of industries including banking, retail, fitness, dental, technology and much more. BPM celebrated its 6 - year anniversary this past month. Q: How did you get started in your field? I graduated from UW-LA Crosse with a major in public relations and organization communication with a minor in professional writing. From there, I lived in Minneapolis and moved to Hawaii doing time share marketing on Waikiki Beach. I then moved back to Green Bay and started my career in media with cumulus radio. I then took a position with a company that designed and manufactured high-end vehicle components as the public relations and marketing director. Once the owner of that business Changed his business focus, I decided to go out on my own and try and improve upon the experiences I’ve had with marketing agencies in my career. Thus, Baer Performance Marketing was started. The reason I added “Performance” to the title is because, in my experience, there was a good amount of “marketing people” who were concerned with awards, recognition and over-thetop creativity and our focus at BPM is to “perform” for our clients.

Q: What is the worst job you’ve ever had? My first job after college, corporate collections - I had to sit in a small cubicle and make a mandatory minimum of 120 phone calls a day and try to get businesses to pay their past-due bills. Q: OK, now the good stuff. What do you like to do for fun? I’m a sports fanatic; I love to golf, play football, softball and basketball. When not involved in sports, I love to do fun stuff with my wife and 2 little boys. Q: What’s your favorite movie and why? I’m a huge fan of any and all James Bond movies, the awesome gadgets, non-stop action and beautiful ladies. What more could a guy want? Q: Is your desk messy or organized? My desk is somewhere in between. I find myself condensing and filing my desk to some extent daily due to the constant changing needs of our clients. Q: Green Bay Packers or another team? Green and gold without a doubt, the best franchise in professional sports! Q: Where was your best vacation and why? My wife and I took a “make it or break it” cruise when we were dating to determine if we were meant to be. It was a cruise in the Caribbean and went to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Mexico and we also enjoyed some bonus days in South Beach. We made it through the 12 days and still liked each other so we decided to get married and now have two boys - best vacation of my life hands down!

Q: Who is the one person that helped to make you who you are today? On a professional level, I would say my old boss, Greg Jessen. I started my career in banking when I graduated from UWMadison in 2003. I’ve been involved in many facets of banking: consumer lending, retail banking, management, business banking & commercial lending. 11 years came and went very quickly! Q: Who is the one person that helped to make you who you are today? I have been fortunate to work with many great people and leaders. I also have great parents that always pushed me to work hard and be the best I could be.

Q: OK, now the good stuff. What do you like to do for fun? Most of my time is spent with my wife and 2 daughters. We enjoy camping or spending time by lake up north. I also love anything sports related. Whether it’s playing basketball or attending a Packer or Badger game, I’m all in! Q: What’s your favorite movie and why? I guess I’d say Shawshank Redemption. It’s just a great movie. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off might be a close 2 nd. Q: Is your desk messy or organized? I guess it depends on the day! Usually I’d say organized, but some times when things get really busy, it can be a challenge to keep clean. Q: Green Bay Packers or another team? It’s all Wisconsin all the way for me! I’m definitely a die hard fan of the Packers, Badgers & Brewers! Q: Where was your best vacation and why? Driving around Alaska for 2 weeks in a motorhome was really amazing, but taking the family to Disney last year was probably the best. Watching my oldest daughter’s eyes light up when she met princess after princess was pretty cool!

Q: What do you like most about working in the Heart of the Valley area? Having grown up in Little Chute and going to high school in Appleton, I’ve been in the Heart of the Valley area most of my life. Leaving for college in Madison, and then living in Milwaukee for 5 years, it was great to get away and then come Q: What are the Top 3 items on your bucket list? Take a vacation in Hawaii, go sky diving and attend a Super back to the valley. It really gave me a great appreciation for Bowl! the area, and the people that live here. 8 Expressions Really Good Communicators Use

Want to communicate more effectively? Try using these expressions to prep the listener. Good communication is all about preparing the listener. Few of us have endless time available to listen to endless chatter about nonsensical subjects or to put up with complex details. This is even more true in the office. To communicate more effectively, try using these phrases to prep people. It gives them some notice about when something is important, complex, or just a little more entertaining.

4. The really good thing about that is... This phrase helps the listeners understand that, whatever is coming next, it will be worth giving it your whole-hearted attention. In the same way as saying "you have a green light" for a project or topic, you are preparing the listener for something positive, encouraging and motivational. 5. Here's my reasoning... Similar to letting people know you have the answer to a problem, this expression is a smart lead-in because it prepares the listener for a more lengthy explanation. We can settle in a little and wait for you to go into more detail. Plus, we get a clue that things might get a little complex.

1. We have a green light... This is one of my favorite expressions, because it's a sign of someone who is a good communicator. It creates a positive feeling in the room--there are no more problems to worry about; the upper management at a company has already approved what you are about to say and listening will be worthwhile. It sets a tone and pushes the topic forward. 2. Let me back up... A friend of mine uses this expression quite often. It's a great way to reframe your conversation and recapture attention. Essentially, it's like saying you have already spilled all of the juicy details but want to fill in a little more detail and it's worth sticking with the conversation. 3. I have an answer for you... Here's a direct, no frills-approach to communication. When you let people know you have an answer, they will perk up. Part of the reason is that we all want to get the basic summary on a topic, we want answers to problems, and we want to be part of a solution. 18 Heart Beat | October 2014

6. Let me tell you why that's important... Here's one that's the same as sticking up a red flag in the middle of a conversation. Maybe the person you are speaking to isn't really listening that carefully. By saying you want to relay something important, you are letting the listener know when to cue in a little more. 7. You will think this is funny... I like this expression because it creates empathy with the listener. It says, I know you and what you usually want to hear, so listen a bit more attentively. A northern Idaho woman has been charged with a felony after police say she chewed up the upholstery of a patrol car seat. The Bonner County Daily Bee reports 42-year-old Staci Anne Spence was charged late last week with felony malicious injury to property and misdemeanors including resisting arrest and battery on an officer. Spence has not yet entered a plea, according to court records, and a phone listing for her could not be found.. Prosecutors say Spence was arrested Thursday morning after deputies came to her home to investigate a battery report. The deputies wrote in a 20 Heart Beat | October 2014

court statement that when they arrived at the Bonner County Jail, they found that Spence had chewed through the patrol vehicle's upholstery and into the foam cushioning.
