LATE SEATING In consideration of audience members, the Houston Symphony makes every effort to begin concerts on time. Ushers will assist with late seating at pre-designated intervals. You may be asked to sit in a location other than your ticketed seat until the end of that portion of the concert. You will be able to move to your ticketed seat at the concert break. Looking Back on the 2012-13 Season After 12 years of exemplary leadership, Hans Graf’s tenure as the Houston Symphony’s Music Director came to a flourishing finish in May. His final season—marked with scores of applause, standing ovations and heartfelt toasts— was bold and overflowing with artistic triumphs, meaningful collaborations and creative, new approaches to classic Graf’s Farewell Concert, repertoire. It was certainly a May 17, 2013 year to remember! He launched the season with a jubilant Opening Night performance of Ravel’s Bolero and also spotlighted the diverse talents of six Symphony musicians in solo performances. The Best of Brahms followed for three weekends after, and showcased the prolific work of Johannes Brahms, one of Graf’s favorite composers. The orchestra performed all of Brahms’ great symphonies, and with the aide of pianists Garrick Ohlsson and Jonathan Biss, his piano concertos as well. Graf bravely introduced Houston audiences to the evocative Wozzeck in Concert. Under his advisement, the organization mounted a vast initiative to educate audiences about the intricate music and storyline. Graf invited baritone Roman Trekel and mezzo-soprano Anne Schwanewilms to perform the title roles of the cursed Wozzeck and Marie along with Gordon Gietz, Marc Molomot, Nathan Berg, Robert McPherson, Katherine Ciesinski and students from Rice University’s Shepherd School 2012 Opening Night, of Music. Graf’s Farewell Concert of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, was an emoHans and Margarita Graf 2013 Maestro’s Wine Dinner tionally palpable experience. Joined by the Houston Symphony Chorus and good friends soprano Erin Wall and mezzosoprano Bernarda Fink, the powerful performance moved the Jones Hall audience to its feet, shouting “Bravos!” and thundering the building with applause for several minutes. Symphony patrons, current and past musicians and staff turned out en masse throughout the season to show their gratitude to the beloved Music Director for his dedication, talent and courage. The Maestro’s Wine Dinner and Collector’s Auction was an apt final fanfare given that Graf is a proven wine aficionado. The joyous and, at times, tearful event was flooded with Graf’s dearest fans and supporters offering several touching toasts for him and his wife, Margarita, who have given so much of their time and resources over the years. Chairs Mary Lynn and Steve Marks and Judy and Rodney Margolis arranged several surprises throughout the evening, including one particularly sentimental piece of art designed by the Grafs’ daughter, Anna. Though this was his last season as Music Director, Graf will return as Conductor Laureate over the next two years, including two concert weekends during the Centennial Season.

Farewell to Hans Graf
The organization crafted several moments throughout the season to recognize Graf’s contributions and honor his commitment, including the unveiling of a plaza star inscribed with his name, signature and years of service. The star sits just outside of the front doors of Jones Hall and joins a previous star that was dedicated to former Music Director Christoph Eschenbach.
Graf was presented several tokens of gratitude at his farewell concerts. Included among the gifts were a complete collection of bound Houston Symphony Magazines from his seasons as music director and a replica of the manuscript for Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. Board President Bob Peiser and Executive Director/CEO Mark Hanson gave him a bottle of Krug champagne, a particularly sentimental gift for well-known wine enthusiast Graf, who believes it is one of the greatest champagnes ever made. In fact, Graf actually fashioned the base of his conducting baton with a 1928 Krug Champagne cork.

The Houston Symphony’s David Dewhurst Student Concert Series reached more than 35,000 Houston students, teaching active listening and critical thinking skills through education-based concerts. A few lucky high school students were introduced to jazz trumpeter and vocalist Byron Stripling in a masterclass before his The Best of Louis Armstrong concert. Cultivating a future soloist’s career, Israeli clarinetist Moran Katz won this year’s annual Ima Hogg Competition, winning the Grace Woodson Memorial Award, a $25,000 prize. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. & Mrs. John P. Dennis III, this year’s prize increased from $5,000 to $25,000, in honor of John’s grandmother. The Competition was chaired by April J. Lykos. Fun music along with Associate Conductor Robert Franz’ surprise costumes make Houston Symphony Family Concerts a mustsee! This past season, kids enjoyed concerts like Wands and Batons: Music of Harry Potter and More and a holiday concert entitled Hip Hoppin’ Nutcracker. Offering a deeper experience with classical music was the idea behind creating the Best of Brahms three-weekend concert schedule this year. Focusing exclusively on the prolific composer, Johannes Brahms, the orchestra performed all of his most beloved symphonies and concertos. Colorful Brahms’ beards were distributed as a spirited jest to the composer’s prominent facial feature.

Second Year Success The ACCESS Concert Series and the Sugar Land Series returned for their second year. NPR’s Miles Hoffman again hosted the three-concert ACCESS series featuring shorter concert formats, pre-performance talks and Q&A sessions with the artists. In Sugar Land, subscriptions to the three-concert series at Sugar Land Baptist Church grew 18 percent! August 2013

Meet one of the newest faces of the Houston Symphony! On January 16, the organization announced that Andrés Orozco-Estrada will be the next Music Director of the Houston Symphony, occupying the Roy and Lillie Cullen Chair. Colombian-born, Vienna-trained Orozco-Estrada officially begins his five-year post as Music Director in September 2014, and the organization looks forward to announcing his first full season in January 2014. Since his announcement, the city has been buzzing with excitement to see him on the podium again. The wait won’t be long! Orozco-Estrada will lead the orchestra four times during the Centennial Season beginning with his debut performance as Music Director Designate on October 17-20 with violin virtuoso Midori. He will return in January 2014 for two programs: Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony and The Planets and The Earth—An HD Odyssey. In April 2014, he will be back to conduct the program Bronfman Plays Beethoven 4 with the orchestra.
La Triste Historia Animated Film + Music
Day of Music and Beyond If the Houston Symphony’s first-ever Day of Music festival on July 13 was any indication of the spirit of the Centennial Season, then Houstonians are in for a spectacular concert year. Aiming to showcase the thriving musical diversity in Houston, Day of Music was a free 13-hour music festival featuring two concerts by the Houston Symphony and performances by more than 27 local ensembles ranging in music from celtic rock, klezmer and mariachi to African drumming, symphonic band and rock & roll. With the support of partners Music Doing Good, the Houston Blues Museum, Sugar Hill Studios and Guitar Houston, almost 10,000 people from all over the Houston area came to Jones Hall, and most spent more than five hours dashing from stage to stage soaking in the musical offerings. Day of Music is only one of the free community offerings the Houston Symphony has planned this year. Fans of Latin American music can enjoy two free concerts: Fiesta Sinfónica Familiar in September and Lunada in October. In December, the orchestra will bring the holiday spirit to patients and guests at Houston Methodist Hospital and also to the patrons and community members of The Church Without Walls and Fallbrook Church. Later, downtown crowds can join the Symphony for an Earth Day (April 22) concert at Discovery Green.

The Centennial Season has inspired a truly unique artistic project that highlights one of the most important and meaningful holidays in the Hispanic community. El Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is celebrated every November 1 and 2, nights when spirits of loved ones are believed to walk upon the earth again. The Houston Symphony has commissioned La Triste Historia, a multimedia concert experience dedicated to this significant holiday. Renowned Mexican composer Juan Trigos, director Ben Young Mason and executive producer Duncan Copp have paired an original and evocative orchestral work, Symphony No. 3, Ofrenda a los meurtos, with a fantastical animated film. Based on a short story by Mason, the film follows the tragic and dreamlike tale of two young lovers, set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, which culminates in the celebration of the Day of the Dead. The world premiere weekend of La Triste Historia will occur November 1, 2 and 3 at Jones Hall with the Houston Symphony and former Associate Conductor, now music director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Carlos Miguel Prieto. Leading up to the concert premiere, Jones Hall will host the Mexican Consulate’s annual Dia de los Muertos altar exhibit. The public is invited to view the collection of stunning personal displays to passed loved ones beginning October 30. La Triste Historia is generously supported in part by Chevron.
LOOKING FORWARD John Williams and Yo-Yo Ma – One Night Only!

Classical music’s dream team, award-winning composer John Williams and the legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma will share the stage on December 5 in a musical collaboration that promises to be a life-long cherished memory for all in attendance. The two music superstars and longtime friends will join the Symphony for an evening of music by John Williams composed for the concert hall and for some of Hollywood’s most beloved films. Williams and Ma will perform the composer’s lush and virtuosic Cello Concerto, written specifically for Ma’s talent. Then, Williams will enliven some of his most popular film scores on the second half of the program. The honorary chair for this concert is Margaret Alkek Williams.
A Pops Season For All In his 14th season as Principal Pops Conductor, Michael Krajewski will lead the orchestra through five concerts of music that audiences will know and love. The season opener, Cirque de la Symphonie, combines fiery symphonic music with the daredevil stunts of cirque performers while Classic Soul, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Music of the Mad Men Era and 100 Years of Broadway will each feature top vocalists performing soul, R&B, 70s/80s classics and timeless Broadway melodies. Other highlights include performances by the multi-talented Megan Hilty, star of NBC’s Smash, and later in the season, soulful trumpeter Chris Botti. Mike’s annual Very Merry Pops will warm hearts with its delightful holiday selections including a performance of the Symphony’s recording, Glad Tidings, narrated by Houston spiritual leaders. As a season finale, Symphonic Spectacular! See the Music brings award-winning actress Sigourney Weaver as host and tour guide in an audio-visual adventure, exploring classical music’s most popular hits, including “Waltz of the Flowers,” 1812 Overture and Flight of the Bumblebee. Selecting a Steinway
Mahler 8 One of the can’t-miss concerts of the season is Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Symphony of A Thousand, on May 9 and 10. It’s been almost 20 years since the Houston Symphony’s last performance of this powerful work. Requiring a stage extension for the more than 450 instrumentalists and vocalists, this rarely performed masterpiece about the redemptive power of the human spirit is fitting for an organization facing its first steps into a new century. Former Music Director Christoph Eschenbach conducted the last performance of this work by the Houston Symphony in 1994, and his return in 2014 will be an incredible memory for concertgoers.

As far as presents go, the Houston Symphony League couldn’t have chosen a more perfect gift for the Houston Symphony in its 100th year—a new Steinway concert grand piano. Led by Houston Symphony League Vice President of Fundraising, Betty Tutor, and motivated by its own 75th Anniversary in 2012, the League collected donations totaling almost $130,000 to fund the purchase of the instrument. In 2001, the Symphony had the misfortune of losing two Steinways when Jones Hall flooded from Tropical Storm Allison. Since then, the organization has replaced one Steinway thanks to a generous donation from Helen Rosenbaum in 2001 and borrowed a Steinway owned by Jones Hall. The addition of the League’s Steinway will give the orchestra great versatility, as guest pianists will now be able to choose which instrument they prefer. Members of the Houston Symphony League made a special trip to the Steinway factory in New York last spring to watch as the new instrument was selected. Steinway artist, award-winning pianist and Houston favorite Kirill Gerstein met the group in New York to offer his thoughts on selecting the piano. According to Gerstein, this new instrument has a larger sound than the current concert pianos and will be a great fit for all types of repertoire. Rightly so, Gerstein will be the first artist to perform on the instrument at the Symphony’s first subscription concert weekend September 12, 14 and 15 and will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
