reimagining home

Back in the ‘60s, pop artist Andy Warhol predicted everyone in the future would celebrate fame for a short moment. To help all you home enthusiasts nab your time in the spotlight, let me share news about our contest. We at Houston House & Home magazine seek the best makeovers in a variety of categories – kitchens, baths, yards and whole houses. Please see page 55 for more information, in addition to our Facebook page and Web site (www.houseandhomeonline.com)! Tell your DIY-loving friends, your builder, designer and landscaper. Or nominate them yourself! We’ll begin publishing the winners in December. The deadline for entries is September 15. Do women spend more moola in an environment that looks high-end “glam”? Women’s clothing store Ann Taylor is betting on that strategy. They’ve upgraded the looks of their stores by bringing in comfy sofas and hanging pretty chandeliers. The photo above shows the new Ann Taylor style. What do

you think? Tell us on our Facebook page. Talk about glamor style, we’re featuring a Bellaire home built by builder Richard Price and a kitchen in a house by Brian Thompson Custom Homes. Find them on pages 52 and 66, respectively. If you’re looking to create your own sophisticated and oneof-a-kind look, you might want to head on over to the Design Resource Center. They’re having their annual designer sample sale on Aug. 22 & 23! Looking forward to seeing your projects! Have a great summer, Susan Fox HOUSTON

BEFORE & AFTER

AFTER: Large 20-inch by 20-inch porcelain diagonal floor tiles, updated lighting, painted cabinets, new hardware, granite counters with tiled backsplash, and new matching stainless appliances refreshed this once-dated kitchen. BEFORE: Very small floor tiles, a skylight, dated lighting and cabinets, a cumbersome pot rack, boring light beige laminate counter and backsplash along with mismatched appliances spoiled this kitchen.

When new clients Debo and Rocky Bartos called me to help with their kitchen, I was happy because they were referred to me by clients Debby and Bob Coffman, whose kitchen I featured in the September 2011 issue of HH&H, in an article titled, “Above and Beyond.”

BEFORE

AFTER: New matching appliances, granite counters with tile backsplash, cleaned up counters and drawers, and a new microware vent helped give this kitchen an updated look. BEFORE: Dated appliances, counter clutter, drab countertops and backsplash, button on towels, and permanently tilted venthood needlessly dated this kitchen.

BEFORE

“Our kitchen was outdated and drab, and we wanted a newer, more modern look,” Debo explains. The couple felt stuck with their kitchen. “We just didn’t know how or where to start. If we simply replaced what we had, essentially we’d have the same kitchen,” she says. She adds that after our meeting she felt very encouraged. “We thought with your help we could actually have the kitchen we wanted.”

TIP: Painting existing cabinets saved thousands of dollars and looks great, too. Debo admits that they were surprised by some of my suggestions and would never have thought of them. One of my suggestions was to paint the existing cabinets. She thought they needed to be varnished or stained and needed to look like wood. “I also would have never thought to bring the tile backsplash all the way to the upper cabinets. I thought they needed to be about 4 inches high. I definitely like neutral colors,” Debo explains.

She loves the large 20-inch floor tiles I suggested. She admits the tile took some getting used to but she loved the color from the beginning. Friends and family think the transformation is amazing.

TIP: Neutral colors don’t have to be “boring” or drab.

AFTER: An updated island, new lighting and hardware breathed new life into this once dated kitchen.

BEFORE

BEFORE: A boring kitchen island and dated lighting and hardware prevented this kitchen space from being visually interesting.

TRADE SECRETS • OLD KITCHEN CABINETS can be painted. With the addition of a new porcelain floor and backsplash tile and some new appliances and hardware, this kitchen was transformed on a budget. This, plus new granite counter tops, Kichler lighting and brushed nickel Kohler For te fixtures, updated this kitchen. • Even though there are many dif ferent neutral colors and textures, they still go together beautifully.

“I think my favorite thing is the overall ‘look’— everything is modern, up to date, and everything blends so well,” Debo says. “Even though there are many different neutral colors, they still go together wonderfully,” she explains. One thing she recalls is me helping them with the kitchen cabinets. They ended up painting them with Benjamin Moore’s oil-based semi-gloss enamel in # 2052. “We’d thought about just cleaning them and replacing the hardware, but you explained there were ‘backs’ on the handles, which left lightercolored silhouettes. “You gave us several names of people to contact about refinishing as well as other possibilities. They were very helpful, showing us that refinishing them ourselves would be one big headache. After all the experts told us that refinishing would not work, our contractor Doyal Debow with Diero Designs ended up painting the cabinets as well as the walls (Benjamin Moore ‘Bar Harbour Beige # 1032). The island, stair banister and trim downstairs were painted in Pratt & Lambert 7-21 Matte. What has she learned? “I know I do not have the vision or expertise to remodel so I definitely need professional help, and would highly recommend it.” Debo says. “You suggested the Tropical Brown granite countertop from Arizona Tile, and you physically helped us select the Agra Collection 20inch square glazed porcelain floor tile that came from Emser Tile in “Café.” The tile backsplash (DT PZ04-3) and listello trim in ‘”Mosman Rust” (A8085) behind the cook top came from Daltile, which you also had recommended.

Trends & Tips

If a classic can be defined as something that works throughout the years, in all climates, in all situations, then leather furniture perfectly illustrates this concept.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BUYING LEATHER FURNITURE

GOOD TO KNOW Why do people buy leather furniture? Judy Shih, an owner of Furniture Accessories Outlet, mentions its durability. Superior leather furniture can, in fact, turn into heirloom pieces. Because of that hardiness, the underlying frames need to last as long as the leather.

Restoration Hardware 1940s Wingback Leather Side Chair, $649 - $899.

“Things to look for in good leather furniture include solid hardwood or multi-ply hardwood frames,” says Jim Winkler, president of LeatherShoppes. As for what can cover the frames, Tracy Weeks, founder of Urban Leather, lists these materials, in many variations and grades: full grain (leather that shows its natural character, flaws and all; softens with age); top grain (leather with imperfections sanded down; with a stamped grain); bonded (vinyl, naugahyde, pleather).

K&D Home & Design’s Corbu sofa.

30 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

STAYING FRESH Even classics go through trends. Winkler says the popularity of reclining leather seating continues. He also notes recent requests for shades of blues and grays—away from tans, browns and chocolates. Shih points out that, although traditional looks will always to be popular, many customers currently prefer leather pieces in contemporary and transitional styles. Weeks also sees the trend away from overstuffed seating and toward more clean, tight lines. As for color, he now gets inquiries for statement pieces made of blue and green leathers.

Timeless Tips from the Experts

Raw Facts

From Urban Leather, Tracy Weeks tells consumers to spend time online learning the terms of the industry before going into the store. Better educated buyers always come out ahead.

• A strong and versatile natural resource, leather for furniture comes mostly from cattle. • No two hides are alike. Age, heredity, and the environment all influence the character of the hide. • The beef herds of North and South America provide the majority of cattle hides for furniture. • Since cattle are raised for beef consumption, leather represents a byproduct of the meat industry making leather a renewable resource that allows valuable products to be created out of what otherwise would be waste. The Furniture Accessories Outlet’s Judy Shih stresses this nugget of fiscal responsibility: know your budget. Jim Winkler with LeatherShoppes encourages his customers to buy pieces with good construction. At today’s prices, he says you can get a sofa with solid wood, spring suspension and quality leather for about $2,000-$3,000.

t’s that time of year again . . . to mark your calendars for one of the country’s top antique fairs. More than 100,000 people will flock to the shops and tent-filled fields in the Brenham-Round Top-Fayettville areas from September 26 to October 4. Approximately 2,000 vendors converge in this picturesque part of Texas twice year (spring and fall) to hawk architectural salvage, home décor, apparel, art, collectibles, jewelry, and vintage or antique furniture. For specific information and maps, visit www.antiqueweekend.com or www.roundtoptexasantiques.com Between now and then, you may want to visit the quaint town square of Fayettville and visit the Red & White Gallery (www.redandwhitegallery.com); or tour the four wineries in and around Chappell Hill, Brenham and Burton (Texas Star Winery, Windy Winery and Pleasant Hill Winery, and Saddlehorn – respectively). In the meantime, stop in at Pleasant Hill Winery during the “Crush for Fun” event, August 9-10, for some grape-stomping fun. You’ll get purple feet and a T-shirt. Tours and tastings offered, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. 979-830-VINE

n a breezy midday morning, Karen Beach, is baking coconut crème pies from an old family recipe in a kitchen ringed in windows. Nine people are coming for dinner, which is the Round Top way, she says, especially on the long, lovely summer evenings. 42 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

The house sits on five acres of woodland – some landscaped, some wild – with dozens of oaks, rosemary, and bushes of knockout roses in the front. From the kitchen windows, you can see the fishpond where deer nibble at the feeder and rabbits pause for a morning drink.

Karen Beach’s backyard is park-like. A flagstone path leads to the pond.

There’s the earthy smell of fresh cut grass and the heavenly aroma of pies in the oven. It’s no wonder that when friends from Houston come for a weekend visit, they don’t want to leave. “The minute you walk in the door, it's like everything calms down and slows down and gets more relaxed. Even though I do a lot when I’m here, it's what I enjoy doing so it isn’t stressful,” she says. Beach was raised in Port Neches and lived most of her adult life in Los Angeles and Houston. She began coming to

Round Top and Marburger years ago for the antique shows and eventually rented a place through friends she met in the small community. She enjoyed the ease of country living and it wasn’t long before she bought her own place off Highway 237 about a quarter mile from Marburger. It’s a Round Top address about an hour-and-a-half drive from her Houston home. The soft green two-story house with a classic metal roof -often overflowing with company -- has five bed-, rooms, four baths, and a total of 2,800 square feet of living space. The 43

The living and dining areas are a continuous space, visually separated by an old rustic beam.

“The minute you walk in the door, it's like everything calms down and slows down and gets more relaxed.” original part of the house was built in the late 1800s but additions were made over time to make it a livable size. “When my contractor, David Levy, drove up from Houston to look at the house, he told me: “You’re going to need more storage in the kitchen.” The structural changes that followed made the house more functional. Levy added kitchen shelving, reconfigured the laundry room, added a screened outdoor dining area, and another bathroom to the second floor. The design and furnishings of the 13-room retreat are by Beach’s own dictate – The kitchen with its extra wall of storage features a backdrop of multi-colored bead board. It was discovered by builder Jacqueline Ditsler at a dealer tent in the “fields” during a Round Top antiques fair. 44 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

“My favorite room is the bedroom because it’s so peaceful.” all represent what especially appeals to her and what is comfortable. Interior walls are painted in white or pale greens, and she displays a few of her favorite French antiques from Joyce Horn in Houston and other local dealers. One of her favorite paintings, a longhorn she calls Studly, hangs in the living room. It’s by local artist Dorothy Little who sometimes comes to dinner. Beach also has two landscapes by the late artist Doris Steider. “My favorite room is my bedroom because it’s so peaceful,” she says. Beach has linen curtains next to her queenside bed and a curvy dove gray chest by Aiden Gray. By the bed is an area rug from Ballard Designs with French phrases in italics. The walls are a restful green called Grassland from Sherwin Williams. “Round Top is an unusual place with an interesting mix of people. I am never bored when I’m here.” enough to show a patina of colors from a century of different paints. Outdoors in the park-like setting, Beach opted for white gravel and bright green St. Augustine nearest the house. A flagstone path leads to the fishpond. This is the preferred haunt of her French bulldogs, Bogie and Cooper, who are chastised for occasionally chasing the rabbits that nibble the lawn. Stephen Grochett, of Bluebonnet Landscaping in Houston, keeps the foliage tidy and tame in contrast to the wilder areas. “Round Top is an unusual place with an interesting mix of people. I am never bored when I’m here. There are wonderful concerts in the summer, and many friendly gatherings. It is a very social place,” she says. Her T-shirt says it all: “London, Paris, Rome, Round Top.”

Homemade Coconut Cream Pie To Die For Here’s what you need: 2 cups of milk, 1 cup of sugar, 3 egg yolks, 2 tablespoons (heaping) cornstarch, 4 tablespoons of butter, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon good vanilla, 1 cup of coconut, whipping cream, and a nine-inch pie shell Here’s how you make it: Mix sugar and cornstarch. Add milk and egg yolks. Cook over low heat stirring constantly with a whisk. When the mixture thickens, switch to a wooden spoon. Cook until it is very thick to prevent lumping. Remove from heat and add butter, salt, vanilla and coconut. Let it cool and then pour into the baked pie shell. To make the pie shell: Two cups of flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 3/4 cups Crisco; five tablespoons of ice cold water. Mix flour and salt in a bowl, cut in Crisco using a pastry cutter. Sprinkle water one tablespoon at a time. Mixing lightly until a ball forms. Roll out with a rolling pin. Put in a pie pan. Bake it at 425 until golden (about 15 minutes.) Bon appétit. magine 1,100 square feet of outdoor living space that can be wide open or instantly screened with the push of a button. That’s one high-tech touch that simplifies backyard entertaining at a new, two-story Tuscan-style home in Bellaire. The homeowners chose the lot because of its size, more than 100 feet wide and about 300 feet deep. It’s roughly three times the average home site for the neighborhood, according to their architect, Travis Mattingly of Architectural Solutions in Houston. Here, the couple built an 8,000 square-foot custom home with outdoor areas primed for family living and entertaining. It was completed in 2012 after almost two years of planning and over a year of construction. The house sits about 80 feet back from the street and opens onto a wide circular drive with landscaped beds. It has a stucco exterior with a Redland two-piece clay tile roof laid in a serpentine fashion. The front door is iron with insulated glass.

The homeowners wanted their spa to feature a swim-up bar. 52 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

The fully equipped outdoor kitchen looks out to the raised spa and swim-up bar. A view into the living room is to the left.

The outdoor living area expands 1,100 square feet.

In 24 rooms, there are the expected spaces – kitchen, dining room, office – but the homeowners also entertain in less ordinary spaces with a pub, a piano room, a game room, a gallery and a media room complete with a stage. In this house, it’s not only what’s inside but what is outside that inspires. “The outdoor area -- the covered veranda, the pool and the sunken summer kitchen – truly make this house extraordinary,” says Mattingly. 54 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

The pool stretches 40 feet along the eastern side of the property with a sundeck near the shallow end complete with bubblers. “It has wonderful water functions, everything you can think of,” adds designer Steve Wilson of Star Pools. Glass-bead plaster makes the water sparkle and a travertine deck installed in large step pads connects the pool to the spa and the lower patio. Topping the pool are six laminar water jets, which

The swimming pool comes to life with six laminar jets and vivid color-changing LED lights.

Making a Big Splash With the Pool Design The homeowners wanted the best of everything in the latest pool technology. They wanted a swim-up bar and an oversized raised spa, which features multiple hydrotherapy jets, underwater barstools, and dual heaters. The Regency Palms Resort in Turks and Caicos served as the inspiration for a tranquil lounging area. The automated fire pit with seating area expands the entertainment area. This Star Pools project comes to life with three bubblers on the sun shelf, illuminated by vivid color-changing LED lighting. Six laminar jets originate from the lawn and project translucent streams up to seven feet high into the pool. At night the streams are brilliantly colored with an internal LED light source. The pool and spa dual equipment communicate directly with the home automation, or can be controlled remotely with a smart phone or tablet. Travertine decking and step pads lead to the backyard paradise. The owners built their dream house with entertaining as a focus.

project plumes of water up to seven feet high. At night, the translucent streams can be colored with brilliant internal LED lighting. Beyond the pool is a fire pit and a seating area. The fire pit has an automatic igniter so you push a button, and the fire appears. The pool’s jetted counterpart is an over-sized spa with five bar stools on one side and multi-level seating on the other. It has a total of 16 jets positioned on two levels. The spa sits

close to the house and is elevated to fit like a puzzle piece with the outdoor kitchen and bar. The pool and spa can be controlled by the home automation system or from an iPhone. What about those pesky mosquitoes and other insects that can discourage outdoor living in our summertime? Electronic roll-down screens were installed and work well for their intended task. Overhead fans keep the veranda and spa area breezy.

The Tuscan-inspired home, located in Bellaire, enjoys certain amenities -- such as the folding doors -- that allow the owners to celebrate the outdoors.

Custom-made walnut tops the island, which adds desired character to the kitchen. The owners selected granite for the countertops.

For homebuilder Richard Price the interesting part of the project was the interplay between interior and exterior spaces. “Even when you’re inside, the outside is never far away,” he says. “The breakfast and family rooms both have a wall of doors that can completely open to the outside.” The kitchen has a two-sided brick fireplace and a multi-barrel brick ceiling with distressed beams. “The countertops are granite with a custom-made walnut count-

er top for the island; sizand with the high end appliances, the kitchen has a lot of character," explains Price. Up the wood and stone staircase with its forged iron railing, there are four bedroom suites. The large master bedroom boasts an adjoining exercise room, ensuite bath with a whirlpool tub and a his-and-hers walk-in closet with luxurious shelving. There are separate closets for his and her shoes and a marble-topped packing table.

Above & Below: Builder Richard Price says the master suite is his favorite area of the house -- complete with a whirlpool tub and an expansive his-her closet.

If he had to choose, Price says the master bath is his favorite room. "I think it’s done well. I particularly like the large blue armoire we built in one end of the bathroom,” he adds. Price and Mattingly agree that design and construction of the house took longer than average and that it was challenging -- but in a good way. “It took a lot of hands-on management to build this home 62 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

as quickly as we did. Thirteen months wasn’t terribly long given the size of the home, the level of detail in the construction, the quality of the work and our efforts to provide the greatest value to the owners. “They are such great people that neither the architect nor I minded. They were excellent clients throughout the process; they were very involved, and we’re still good friends,” says Price.

Mixing It Up Builder’s Recipe for His Family’s Own Kitchen Serves Up a Detectible Space BY SUSAN FOX

Thompson saved the range from a demolition site and then had the hood custom made.

When Brian and Kat Thompson built their Memorial Village home, they followed one rule. And that was to obey none. “The idea if one thing is pewter, then everything must be pewter is not for us,” says Brian Thompson, owner of Thompson Custom Homes. It is obvious from the looks of their kitchen alone that the couple enjoys mixing up styles and pairing together different materials.

The hallway off the kitchen, with a built-in china cabinet, serves as an extension of the small butler’s pantry.

Walking into this space . . . where the couple says they spend 80 percent of their time together as a family . . . The cabinetry feels upscale farmhouse while the checkerboard floor evokes a vintage air, and the dual side-by-side Sub-Zero refrigerators with lower stacked freezer drawers conveys a 21st century appeal. A copper lantern-style pendant over the sink is juxtaposed with a shiny, silvery chandelier above the long rustic kitchen table. 68 house& home | August 2014 | www.houseandhomeonline.com

Maple top butcher block on the island contrasts nicely with the Carrara marble on the countertops, making it all less formal. On the floor, Carrara marble squares pair up with black granite counterparts. “Black marble wasn’t available, but I found that black granite offered the same look – the look we wanted,” says Brian Thompson. At first, the couple thought about placing two islands in the 50-

foot by 20-foot kitchen. The sunroom was going to be the breakfast area. But when they placed the table down where the second island was going to go, it seemed to “warm up the place,” says Brian Thompson. “The room provides ample room and even with a full house, we don’t feel crowded,” he says. Just off the kitchen is a smallish butler’s pantry that leads to a short hallway that transitions into the formal dining room on one end or the very large family room on the other. The flow of this overall house is perfect for entertaining. An outdoor loggia and kitchen are accessible from the sunroom, which is connected to the kitchen. The heart of the house lies in the kitchen, and this one abides by that universal rule. LEFT: The sunroom at the far end of the kitchen, which leads out to the loggia.

Keep the pets from getting underfoot by taking them to doggy day care or designate them to their own room.

It’s Almost Moving Day!

Now What? BY LINDSAY CANRIGHT

If you’re new to the “club” that counts 37 million Americans planning a move this year, then these tips are for you. “Moving ranks right up there with death and divorce. Organization and planning are key,” says Renee Long, moving consultant for A Better Tripp Moving and Storage Co. in Houston.

1. HOW TO ORGANIZE One way to keep organized is to label boxes, noting contents and room placement. “Color coding using post-it notes also works,” says John Shaeffer, co-founder of Point2Point Crowded House Moving & Storage. “Use yellow for the ones that are going to the storage unit, green for the things that are going to your sister’s house and so on.”

Pack phone chargers, laptops, toiletries – in a clear plastic bin in order to locate immediately upon arrival to the new place. Take a photo of the back of the intact computer or TV so that it’s easy to re-insert plugs after the move.

2. OUT WITH THE OLD The second you know a move is in the cards, summon the urge to purge, says Long. “Get rid of the things you don’t need; this will save you the cost of moving and/or storing it only to find you don’t really need it.”

3. BOOK AHEAD Some movers accommodate last-minute customers, but booking in advance means you have a better chance of getting your pick of services at a lower cost. “The earlier you book, the more time you have to get organized,” Long adds.

3. PACKING IT ALL UP “It’s important to identify your delicate items, so that they can be separated and treated differently,” says Christian Nash, of 1800Got-Junk. Schaeffer says this is especially important for antiques. “If you’re going to hire a packing service for any part of your move, hire them to pack your antiques. There really is a method to it. When self-packing, use socks and small soft clothing to insert into glassware to help prevent breakage.

4. WHAT ABOUT THE PETS To help animals adjust to the moving process keep them in a familiar room and pack that space last. On moving day, hire a sitter and get them out of the house if at all possible. “Or if you have a cat that’s never been to daycare, dedicate a room for them and hang a sign on the door that lets people know to stay out,” says Long.

5. KEEP ESSENTIALS CLOSE “Put the important items in your car and keep the keys in a pant’s pocket or on a necklace,” says Long. Pack an overnight bag stocked with items needed for that evening, and which can be easily retrieved.

GARDENING

COURTESY OF THE NATIONAL GARDEN BUREAU

Grow Your Own Salad Bar This Fall One of the self-satisfying things about growing your own vegetables is the knowledge that you are providing healthy food for you and your family. Many claims have been made for various classes of vegetables, from helping to lower cholesterol to reducing the risks of certain types of cancer. SALAD FEASTS While flowers and ornamental plants may be a feast for the eyes, a salad you have grown in your own garden is truly a feast for the body. One of the beauties of your own salad garden is its versatility. You can make an “enthusiastic salad” – where you put everything you have into it – or keep things as simple as lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. And if you have family members who may not be the avid fans of the leafy greens, getting them involved in the salad garden project will often whet their appetites. BASIC COMPONENTS At the base of most salads is a leafy green vegetable of some kind: lettuce and spinach are two of the most popular. Kids who “don’t like spinach” often like it as a fresh green – they think it’s just another kind of lettuce. Some choices for leafy greens to form the base of your salad are spinach and lettuces such as Iceberg, leaf, Romaine, and Boston. To add color to your salad, use ingredients such as carrots, red and green bell peppers or other peppers that can range from purple to green, red or yellow tomatoes, radishes, rings of sliced onions, and a little basil, thyme, dill or parsley. A salad should include a variety of colors, shapes and textures to appeal to the eye as well as to the taste buds. Grow beds with permeable liners from Gardener’s Supply.

Urban Harvest, a local organization committed to promoting sound nutrition and community gardens, hosts a seminar on “Constructing the Home Fruit and Vegetable Garden on August 9, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Westbury Community Center. Daniel Millikin, co-owner of Edible Earth Resources, teaches the class. Info: www.urbanharvest.org

CIAO A TUTTI! I’M ABBIGAIL. I may have been misnamed, because I happen to think I favor Sofia Loren more than Abbigail Breslin. You remember her, Little Miss Sunshine. I’m a bit more elegant than that Abbigail. My Labrador heritage reveals that I am warm, intelligent and America's number one breed registered with the American Kennel Club. Artists and photographers have captured our images countless times — usually as the loyal companion, waiting patiently by our owners’ sides. Oh, how I miss having a human companion! But as Ms. Loren famously said, “If you haven't cried, your eyes can't be beautiful.” I’m still a young lady at two-years-old and still very playful. Just look at my beautiful eyes. Look deep into my eyes. I have an old soul and am looking for your love. Ciao Bella! ID# 252547 HOUSTON SPCA 900 Portway Drive, Houston 77024, 713.869.SPCA (7722) Open daily, www.houstonspca.org
