These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and good level of comfort usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Welcome to the

Cook Islands

A warm lagoon, a swaying hammock and a waft of frangipani are waiting for you in the Cook Islands, just under four hours by air from New Zealand. Forget long arrival procedures and complex transfers – slipping into Island life here could not be easier. Step off the plane in Rarotonga to a song of greeting and an ei (flower garland) welcome; very soon you will be relaxing at your accommodation – because although ‘Raro’ is the biggest of the Cooks, it is really quite small. Villages dot the shoreline, and the main town, Avarua, occupies the top end of this almost apple-shaped island. It’s probably the most easy-going national capital you’ll ever visit, and as well as a good market, has interesting boutiques and eateries. Woven bags and jewellery are two top buys here. Chances are you’ll be staying on Raro for at least part of your visit, so do get out and explore. It has classically gorgeous lagoon beaches but also a mountainous, forest-clad interior that’s perfect for visitors wanting a little adventure. And, with a bus that circles the coast in both directions, it’s very easy to get from place to place. Rarotonga is the stepping stone to the outer islands – these are scattered across two million square kilometres of the Pacific, and while some lie less than an hour’s flight away, the most isolated and pristine are accessible only by sea. Among those easily reached by air and catering for visitors are Aitutaki with its astoundingly beautiful lagoon, Atiu, Mangaia and Ma’uke. Wherever you are you’ll experience the Cook Islanders’ deep sense of hospitality and you’ll quickly become accustomed to the relaxed pace. Explore, enjoy the ambience, have a drink with the locals and join them to sing hymns on a Sunday: unforgettable. We can’t imagine anyone failing to fall in love with these friendly, gentle and very beautiful islands. They are one of the most charming places on earth. Rarotonga The main island of the Cooks, Rarotonga, is not only a holiday destination in itself but the gateway to more far-flung isles. Not that you have to leave its sandy shores. Sink into island time and never leave your resort, but if you want to venture out, Rarotonga has plenty to offer.Take the local bus around the island, or hire a motor scooter or bike and stop at your choice of idyllic beaches, or watch the sun set over the reef. Rarotonga is almost completely encircled by a lagoon, so water-based activities are on offer everywhere. On land join an island tour or tackle the cross-island trek. Don’t miss the Saturday market in Avarua where you’ll find pareus (sarongs), handmade quilts, tropical fruit and black pearls. Evenings bring a stroll on a moonlit beach or an island feast and dance night with dynamic drumming and twirling hips.

Our favourite things to see and do ISLAND NIGHT – This is a great way to experience the vibrant local culture. The major hotels put on an Island Night at least once a week, with traditional song and dance and an island-style feast known as an umukai.

DINING OUT – Book your table on the grand verandah at Tamarind House and sit back and enjoy the finest food on Rarotonga. The atmosphere is elegant and classically South Seas – you’d half expect to see Somerset Maugham sipping a good claret and scribbling away at a nearby table.

LOCAL NIGHTLIFE – Perched on a wooden sea-view platform at Avarua, the Whatever Bar & Grill is a trendy place for the young and young at heart – it can get lively on a Friday night and the winding stairs down to the ground can be rather a challenge if you’ve enjoyed yourself a little too much! TRADER JACKS – No trip to Raro is complete without a visit to this old favourite bar and restaurant. Gentleman Jack himself can often be found propping up the bar. FRUITS OF RAROTONGA – Homemade jams and tropical flavoured chutneys are divine at this little shop opposite Tikioki Beach, but it’s good for smoothies, cakes and fruit juices too, and the snorkelling in the lagoon opposite the café is sensational! PUNANGA NUI MARKET – Head to these markets on Saturday morning for handicrafts, colourful clothing and black pearls – you’re sure to pick up a souvenir or two. WIGMORE’S WATERFALL – On the eastern side of the island, a dirt road leads inland to Wigmore’s Waterfall, a lovely cascade dropping into a fresh, cool swimming pool. Be prepared for the blood thirsty mosquitoes! SUNDAY SERVICE – Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) in Avarua – an amazing cultural (and spiritual) experience in a beautiful white coral building that dates from 1853. Truly fabulous singing and an equally fabulous welcome guaranteed, so don’t be shy – but do dress respectfully. Service starts at 10am, then on your way home take time to look through the historic graveyard.

Aro’a Beachside Inn

Take in the lovely white sand beach and translucent blue water from every angle of this property as you relax and re-energise in one of the eight bungalows or suites, seven of which are absolute beachfront. The service is personalised and yet unobtrusive. There’s a great feeling of remoteness here, yet there are a number of bars and restaurants nearby for you to discover and enjoy. For late afternoon drinks and sunsets your bungalow’s private deck is the ideal place to sit and unwind after another perfect day.

As its name implies, the property is right on the beach, so the constant sound of sea and surf is sure to lull you into tranquillity. There’s plenty to do here if you’re able to tear yourself away from the white sand and beautiful lagoon including swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. At the end of another perfect day in paradise it’s highly recommended that you head down to the Shipwreck Hut on the beach to watch the sunset with an ‘Opu Ra Magic’ cocktail in hand. The Shipwreck Hut also has a great menu of pub meals as well as weekly BBQs.

This little resort is on the sheltered side of Raro, right in line for spectacular sunsets (and whalewatching in season). The views are beautiful and there’s a private white beach to enjoy. You’ll be welcomed like a member of the family when you stay here, but you’ll have as much peace as you want: it’s super-relaxing. There are 12 attractive rooms, all with patio or balcony. The resort has its own bar, café and restaurant, with free tropical breakfast daily, and free kayaking and snorkelling. Guests must be over 16 years old.

Rarotonga Beach Bungalows

A small boutique beachfront hotel with loads of charm and island style hospitality. Conveniently located opposite the Airport and just 5 minutes away from downtown Avarua, it provides the perfect base for an active or relaxed holiday and is an ideal stopover for those venturing out to the outer islands. The 13 Cabanas are modern with a good selection of amenities to add to your holiday comfort. The Coco Grill Restaurant features cuisine from around the Pacific Rim and the Tiki Bar with views over the water and great sunsets, is the hottest place to be seen with a cocktail or cold beer in hand.

This small, intimate, island-style eco-resort is right beside gorgeous Muri Beach and overlooking the tiny island of Ta’akoka. Muri is undoubtedly one of the loveliest parts of Rarotonga, and the large, turquoise lagoon is ideal for water sports. Rarotonga Accommodation Club Raro Resort

Club Raro is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a full-service resort-style property, but one that won’t break the bank. It’s got everything you could wish for in an island hideaway: thatched roofs, palm-frond umbrella huts, quaint mosaic pathways and a beautiful beachfront setting: the perfect spot for lazing and unwinding. There are three sun-and-sand decks, a big, attractive freshwater pool with swim-up bar, a number of complimentary recreational facilities including tennis and a scuba-dive lesson in the pool. There’s also a double happy hour daily – and all day long over the weekend. The resort is also handily placed for those who’d like to get out and about, with Avarua’s shops, market, cafés and restaurants just 1.5 kilometres away – a short bus-ride or a very pleasant stroll.

Set in the enchanting area of Vaima, and resplendent with coconut palms, this is one of the best value for money properties on the island. At Palm Grove you can enjoy the true paradise of a beautiful white sand beach and clear blue lagoon from your beachfront bungalow or enjoy acres of lush quiet gardens of hibiscus and tipani flowers from your garden bungalow. There’s good snorkelling and safe swimming in the lagoon and nearby is ’Fruits of Rarotonga‘, considered by many to be the best snorkelling spot on the island. The on-site Yellow Hibiscus Restaurant & Bar has a reputation for good food and is a great place to mix and mingle in a relaxed setting while enjoying tropical cocktails with live music three nights a week. You are sure to enjoy the Friday night happy hour and the Sunday BBQ.

There’s plenty to do here, with cultural activities on offer, plus a kids’ club and health spa. The bus to downtown Avarua stops at the resort hourly. Two restaurants on-site and several others within easy walking distance mean lots of eating options – but before you decide on dinner, a cocktail in Mal’s Bar is a must: the views over the water at sunset are amazing! Make sure your stay includes a Tuesday or Saturday night, so that you can get along to Edgewater’s ‘island night’ feast and cultural show… and be prepared to join in the dancing!

Lagoon Breeze Villas

If you’re looking for a self-catering holiday option this spacious and comfortable home away from home is sure to appeal. With a number of accommodation styles ranging from studios through to the roomy one and two bedroom villas, all set amongst 3.5 acres of tropical gardens, you’re sure to find an accommodation option to meet your needs. On-site facilities include the Breakfast Café, guest laundry, tour desk, WiFi access and children’s playground and pool. You won’t have to venture too far to cool down, whether be it in the swimming pool or snorkelling in the Aroa Lagoon and Marine Reserve which is just across the road. Getting into Avarua to stock up on food essentials is a breeze as the local bus stops right outside the Villas.

Beachfront at beautiful Titikaveka, but without the usual beachfront price-tag, this hotel has a lot to offer, starting with its large stretch of silky white sands and an iridescent blue lagoon – the ultimate South Sea setting. And, even though the rates are so reasonable, accommodation is of a great standard. Rooms are attractively decorated, and all have cooking facilities, water views and furnished outdoor sun areas. There are 12 Beachfront Studios over two floors, each with a small kitchenette and bathroom with shower. Located on the sheltered western side of the island, Sunset is the perfect name for this little beachside resort, where you’ll enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets on the island. With its great location you’ll be able to enjoy the shops and local arts and crafts of downtown Avarua, just a short eight minute drive away, and the local golf course is also nearby. The spacious self-catering accommodation is either beachfront and overlooking the pretty lagoon (great for snorkelling) or beside one of the two swimming pools set amidst lush gardens. Five minutes up the road from Moana Sands Beachfront Hotel, these roomy villas are right on the snow-white, palm-fringed beach, with safe swimming and snorkelling whatever the tide. They’re located in the village of Vaimaanga, with a café, gift shop and beauty salon adjacent, and two popular restaurants within strolling distance. Each villa has smart modern décor, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open-plan lounge, dining room and fully equipped kitchen. There’s a mini supermarket across the road, open daily. With plenty of space, the villas are an excellent option for holidaying with friends or family. There are three on ground level, and three on the first floor. With just 24 attractive suites, each separated by sandy paths and gorgeous tropical gardens, this boutique resort is a private and very appealing choice. The house motto here is ‘every guest is special’ and the onsite managers and staff go out of their way to make sure it applies – you can be sure of a warm, personal welcome and an enjoyable stay. In fact, this great little resort received an international certificate of excellence last year: no surprise to its many fans. Recently refurbished to a high standard, suites are fresh and airy, with coconut thatching and island-style décor. Some are right by the lagoon; others are just a few steps away from it, and all are a short stroll from the resort’s beautiful infinity pool. Loungers and sun umbrellas are set invitingly on the sands for guests’ use – lunch can be served there if you wish. For even more relaxation, there are big, comfortable hammocks, and each suite has a spacious verandah with outdoor furniture; meals can be enjoyed in private there too. Manuia Beach Resort stands by a beautiful white sand beach, on the sheltered side of Rarotonga, where the sunsets are legendary and the swimming is excellent. In fact, the snorkelling on your doorstep is one of the best kept secrets on the island, and there’s complimentary gear available for your use. There are also kayaks for exploring the lagoon, and scooter/car rental and mountain bike hire is available on a daily charge. Aitutaki Aitutaki and its lagoon captivate visitors from that first glimpse out the aircraft window. Startlingly white swathes of sand contrast with the deep azure of the encircling Pacific Ocean and the remarkable turquoise of its lagoon studded with tiny islets. Just a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga it’s possible to visit Aitutaki on a day trip. MAUNGAPU – The 30 minute hike to the top of Aitutaki’s highest peak (124 metres) is worth the effort simply for the incredible views over the entire atoll and the sapphire blue lagoon – remember to take your camera. LOCAL NIGHTLIFE – The lively Coconut Crusher Bar is the island’s main nightspot and a great place to “shake your booty” at the regular island nights, or roll up for the weekend’s DJ. LAGOON CRUISE – When you’re out on Aitutaki don’t miss the chance to take a lagoon cruise. ONE FOOT ISLAND – Also known as Tapuaetai Motu, and just about as sublime as the South Pacific gets. Itu, a second generation bone-fisherman has extensive knowledge of the flats, and his legendary fish spotting ability helps tip the odds in your favour. Atiu, with its taro gardens, forests and tiny secluded sandy coves, is steeped in legend as well as being rich in rare birds including a swiftlet that lives in caves. Don’t miss the locally-brewed bush beer and homegrown coffee. The island is famed for its handmade quilts and ukuleles. Explore a labyrinth of caves on Mangaia, the second largest of the Cook Islands. Take a four wheel drive safari or go deep-sea fishing.The market sells delicate shell necklaces and handwoven pandanus bags. Ma’uke, the garden island, has caves with freshwater pools to swim in and a unique ‘divided’ church with separate entrances for worshippers from two villages.

Our favourite things to see and do ZIONA CHURCH, MA’UKE – Built in 1882, it was once described by New Zealand artist Samuel Palmer as one of the 12 most fascinating churches in the world. It’s an example of early Western architecture mixed with Pacific influences, along with a lot of Maukean ingenuity.

LARGEST BANYAN TREE IN THE WORLD, MA’UKE – Picking a path along the unsealed crushed coral roads on the way to Motuenga is a surprise encounter with the largest banyan tree in the world – over an acre in size. SPECTACULAR CAVES, MA’UKE – It is the caves that create the mystery of this spectacular island. The Motuenga, which is said to have a hundred separate underground chambers leading to the sea, is but one of the many dotted all over with deep freshwater pools filled with cool crystal waters. RARE BIRDLIFE, MANGAIA – The Mangaian Kingfisher never eats fish but instead preys on skinks, insects and spiders. Nesting in old coconut palms, this bird the Mangaian Kingfisher was thought to be under threat of extinction, but with a population of between 400-700 is safe for now.

ANCIENT CAVES, ATIU – For the intrepid, a walk through the fantastic dense tropical jungle leads to Anatakitaki Cave where three caverns harbour clear pools of water, stalagmites, stalactites and a high natural cathedral ceiling above. The caves, which riddle the coastline, were often used as burial grounds and ancient artefacts can be found deep in the chambers. ORAVARU BEACH, ATIU – Captain Cook landed here in 1777. He set foot on Atiu and trekked inland in search of supplies. Oravaru Beach is the only place in the Cook Islands that Captain Cook set foot on. EXPLORING, MANGAIA – This island is the oldest in the Pacific, and is full of history and mystery. Ask at your hotel for information on guided walks and treks. Don’t miss the huge makatea (fossil coral towers) in the central valleys, the ancient marae, the spectacular caves, and take a trek to Lake Tiriara – a protected beauty spot in the south of the island.

One of the best reasons to visit Mauke is to explore the many limestone caves. One we would recommend to visit is the Vai Tango, which lies a short distance from Ngatiarua Village. This cave is fairly large with a beautiful blue pool which is great for swimming and diving. The Motuanga Cave is known as the “Cave of 100 Rooms” and is a great place to do some exploring. It is entered on land but extends towards the sea and under the coral reef that surrounds Mauke – this is definitely one not to be missed. Recommend sturdy walking shoes, insect repellent and water.

A nature lover’s paradise! While this tour will appeal to bird lovers, anyone wanting to explore the natural wonders of the Cooks will discover that this is a tour not to be missed. Learn about the Rarotongan Flycatcher (Kakerori) Protection Programme and the re-introduction of the Rimatara Lorikeet. Take a walk along an ancient paved path through the native rainforest where you’ll see the flora and fauna of Atiu in the unspoiled wilderness. Not for the faint of heart! Caving on Mangaia is the perfect adventure for those who don’t mind closed, confined spaces and adrenalin pumping adventure. There are a number of fascinating caves, both burial and others, to be found on the island. The caves wind their way through cliffs of fossilised coral (known as makatea) and are dramatic and beautiful, with stunning stalactite and stalagmite features. This is definitely out of the ordinary and something you should experience during your visit to the Cook Islands. Recommend sturdy walking shoes, insect repellent and water.

Terms & Conditions Please read these booking conditions carefully CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACT The guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes. 1. OUR SERVICES AND OBLIGATIONS 1.1 House of Travel Ltd ('we' or 'us' as the case may be) supply services consisting of arranging and co-ordinating travel facilities and services, and making bookings and issuing vouchers to be redeemed by suppliers of travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services ('Suppliers'). House of Travel Ltd is part of the House of Travel group. 1.2 We undertake to perform these services with reasonable care and skill. We will not be liable for any loss or damage which results from the act, default or omission of any person other than ourselves, our employees or agents, or any cause independent of human control. However, travel is an individual experience, and your preferences and opinions may vary from our own. For this reason, we cannot take responsibility for your individual satisfaction. 2. SUPPLY OF TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT AND ACCOMMODATION SERVICES AND FACILITIES 2.1 When we make bookings with Suppliers, we are acting as a booking agent for such Supplier. 2.2 All travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services are supplied directly to you by the Suppliers. We have no control over the facilities or services themselves, or the manner in which they are provided by the Suppliers. Therefore you should be aware of the following conditions: - We will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind which may arise from your use or consumption of, or inability to use or consume those facilities or services. - The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier. - Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier. - All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier.

PRICES 5.1 The price indicator is provided as a guide only. It is based on low season, per adult share twin pricing unless otherwise specified and is correct at the time of printing. The actual price may differ to that indicated due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Price indicators for hotels are per adult per night for share twin in a lead-in room. Price indicators for tours are based on per adult for low season travel. Per person pricing is based in New Zealand dollars. 5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us. 5.3 Events beyond our control, such as changes to the prices of aviation fuel or changes to the cost of services or facilities may result in the prices charged to you being different from those shown in the brochure. You should check all prices with your travel agent before making reservations, and before ticketing. 5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure. 6. - We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you.

7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers.

3. BUSINESS PURPOSES

7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure.

You agree that where our services are acquired for business purposes, or where you hold yourself out as acquiring our services for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply to any supply of goods or services made under these conditions, and we will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to you, including any consequential loss or damage however it may be caused. 4. INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE 4.1 While we attempt to ensure that the contents of this brochure are correct, accurate, and up to date at the time of printing, the contents of this brochure are drawn from information supplied to us by Suppliers. 7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets). 8. CANCELLATION 8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible. 8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent. Cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and travel agents are beyond our control and you should check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable.

10. INSURANCE We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation, loss of luggage and personal property, and medical expenses. Your travel agent will be able to provide you with further information. 11. ITEMS NOT COVERED Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included. 12. VISAS/PASSPORTS For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information. 13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier. 14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent. 15. SERVICE SATISFACTION During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. Your contract for each service is with the Supplier. If this is not possible immediately, or if you are still dissatisfied, please contact your travel agent. Both we and your travel agent will endeavour to investigate on your behalf and to negotiate with the Supplier to resolve the matter as soon as possible, so that you continue to enjoy your journey. 16. LEGAL CLAIMS Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any claim or legal action against the Suppliers is likely to be subject to the terms of your contract with them, and may be governed by the laws of other countries.
