U

p until the late 18th century, Ayutthaya was Thailand’s capital. Ayutthaya today has some of the most impressive ruins of any city in Asia and a must see for anyone with an affinity towards history. The Ayutthaya Kingdom existed from 1351 to 1767. In the 16th century, it was described by foreign traders as one of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the East. The court of King Narai (1656–1688) had strong links with that of King Louis XIV of France, whose ambassadors compared the city in size and wealth to Paris. This month in our Let’s Go feature we take you to the historic city of Ayutthaya. Turn to page 40 to see why it has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. George Bernard Shaw once said, “You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.” Starting in October, Bangkok will become host to the internationally revered Art Biennale for the first time. Aptly positioned along the coastline of its cultural center, the Chao Phraya River, the city’s pulsating artery will welcome 75 artists from 33 countries in a number of historically significant locations. The first ever Art Biennale began in Venice over 120 years ago as a showcase of contemporary art. With over 500,000 attendees enjoying the works displayed in Venice every two years, the hope is that Bangkok will begin its biennial journey into the artworlds historical footnotes and revel in the same success. Pick up your sketch pad and turn to page 56 to find out why you’ll want to be part of this historical art festival.

Put on your best “Dress to Impress” clothes and turn to page 62 to see why this new destination is worth visiting often. Fitness magazines are always telling us about the benefits of working out to increase our physical strength. A regular fitness routine keeps you healthier and leads to a better quality of life. But few articles tout the benefits of mental strength. Muhammad Ali once said that he didn't count all of his sit-ups; he only started counting when it hurt because those were the ones that counted. On page 70 we give you our thoughts on how to lead a more fulfilling life by living outside of your comfort zone. On August 31st at the five-star Athenee Hotel in Bangkok, the 13th Annual Thailand Property Awards took place, rewarding the industry’s spirit of ingenuity and tenacity. This year’s Thailand Property Awards was the largest gala dinner to date with more than 620 on the exclusive guest list. The most-prestigious and longest-running awards program, the Thailand Property Awards is the Gold Standard in the Real Estate industry. Put on your Black-Tie best and turn to page 76 to see which stand out developers and projects received the coveted awards. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find in this month’s issue. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

Every city has its Icon with a view. In Paris it’s the Eiffel Tower, in New York it’s the Empire State Building. Recently in Hua Hin there was a grand opening celebration for Hua Hin’s new Icon with a view, Vana Nava Sky. Vana Nava Sky

A Conversation With Penlada Krutkosa Khun Penlada Krutkosa is a Thai doctor who owns five surgery and aesthetic clinics in Thailand under the name Aime Clinic. K. Penlada is also a National Director for several female beauty pageants and owns her own pageant called Miss Queen Aime, which is a transgender pageant. HOT Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with K. Penlada to discuss her interesting life.

HM: Khun Penlada, where did you grow up and what was your childhood like? PK: I was born in Bangkok, growing up in a family with a single mom and my dad’s parents. I loved outdoor sports such as horse riding, windsurfing, cycling, etc... HM: At what age did you know you wanted to be a doctor and why did you choose this profession? PK: I don’t remember the age but I always loved learning and was familiar with hospitals because my mom was a nurse. As a young girl I dreamed to be a nurse too but then as I became older I decided to become a doctor instead. HM: Can you tell us your medical specialty and what services you provide that are most popular? PK: I graduated board certified from the faculty of medicine at Siriraj Mahidol University in the field of Anatomical Pathology. I’ve worked in Aesthetic Clinics since 2005 and established my first Aime Clinic in 2013. Every branch provides various Aesthetic Services which covers all of my customers desires. Popular services include Laser, Botox and Fillers, Rhinoplasty & Breast Augmentation. HM: You are a very driven woman, owning 5 Surgery and Beauty clinics in 4 provinces that you visit weekly. How do you manage your time and are you able to take any time off during the week? PK: My time is divided into two parts, one as a Doctor and two as a Business Executive. I visit every clinic once a week which doesn’t leave much time for other pursuits. HM: Will you stop at 5 or will you open more clinics in Thailand? PK: I plan to open more branches in other big cities in Thailand and would like to open an Aesthetic Hospital in the future. HM: On top of the time at your clinics you are also a National Director for 3 female pageants; Miss Supermodel Worldwide, Miss Culture Worldwide and Miss Jewel of the World. Can you tell us about this aspect of your life? How did you get involved? Where do you find your contestants? PK: It all started when girls started coming to me for aesthetic work because they had dreams to enter beauty pageants. Later on I decided

that my Aime Clinic would sponsor women for several pageants, both domestic and international. HM: What benefit do you derive from being the National Director of these pageants? PK: I feel much happiness to see these women succeed in making their dreams come true. They are great representatives of Thailand and are also “Beauty Ambassadors” for my Aime Clinics as well. I look forward to continuing these projects in the future. HM: You have also produced your own beauty pageant for 3 years called Miss Queen Aime which is a transgender pageant. How did this come about and why did you choose to make it for transgenders? PK: It is undeniable that nowadays the third category of girls can be very beautiful, just as beautiful as real women and almost all of them need aesthetic services. This was the beginning point for Aime Clinic to launch the Beauty Pageant. The winners are presenters of the clinic and I support them as they compete in other national pageants

PK: Nowadays, I rarely have time to ride a big bike as my days and evenings are full. But my favorite bikes are the enduro-touring styles like the BMW F800GS & R1200GS and the KTM990AGV. HM: You are a very busy woman. If you could take a month-long holiday starting tomorrow, where would you go and why? PK: I love nature & natural beauty rather than the big vibrant city with crowds of people. If I could have free time for 1 month I’d love to catch the Trans-Siberian Train from China to Russia and the route Qinghai – Tibet, as well as touring in China, Tibet, Nepal & Russia. HM: Thank you Khun Penlada for your time

HM: We understand that you are also a fan of big bikes. What kind of motorcycle do you own and do you get to spend much time on it?

It offers a diverse selection of dishes from Western, Asian, and Indian cuisines as well as some exceptionally tempting Thai specialities. All dishes on the ‘ala carte’ menu are individually priced.

For mains – a Lobster Ravioli with a tasty cream sauce; confit duck leg sitting upon a pumpkin mash with roasted cherry tomatoes and a flavour filled Jus; and our table’s absolute favourite - the Stir-fried beef and morning glory in a coconut and peanut sauce (Phra Ram Long Srong) with just the perfect amount of spice. A very moreish dish!

September’s Scallop Sensation @ Big Fish & Bar

S

imply the Best! With its fame already spreading to Bangkok and beyond, Marriott Hua Hin Resort’s Big Fish & Bar Restaurant continues to excite and excel. Its unsurpassed location – right upon the beach, and either climate controlled or outdoors (you choose) – Big Fish has earned its reputation for a legendary menu – with additional, opportunistic choices from its ‘Catchof-the-Day’ specialty chalk-board.

24

HOT Magazine

Now under the mastery of surprisingly youthful-looking but highly accomplished, Chef Xavier Charest-Réhel, has extended Big Fish’s already comprehensive selection, treating diners to ‘The Season of Scallops’ – that queen of molluscs, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, relatively low in calories and a fine source of healthy protein.

At Big Fish, clean, sweet and tasting of the ocean, American scallops are available during all of September in a choice of five unique, delectable and stunningly different dishes: i) deep fried; ii) sautéed (Phat Cha style); iii) carpaccio, iv) Coquille Saint Jacque &, v) seared – each with exotic accompaniments, meticulously prepared & presented.

1. Accompanying the deep-fried American Scallops was a proprietary strawberry and jalapeno salsa accompanied by Thai herbs.

2. Phat Cha sautéed scallops were exquisitely presented in oyster sauce benefitting from Big Fish’s proprietary preparation of Thai herbs

3. (La pièce de résistance for your dedicated scallop aficionado); Scallops Carpaccio dressed in Thai gin with red radish.

4. At Big Fish, Baked scallops (Coquille Saint Jacques), are impressively with mashed potato and a delectable mornay sauce. [A far cry from its name-sake. Saint Jacques was a disciple of Jesus. Pilgrims traveling to his shrine carried a scallop shell. At stops along the way pilgrims were offered what food could be scooped up in the shell].

5. Last up was this author’s personal favourite; Pan-seared scallops in a cauliflower puree, accompanied by truffle paste and served with crispy fried shallots. Irresistible!

Each of the scallop sensations was complemented by chilled white wine; in this instance an unusual Italian blend combining unoaked chardonnay and pinot grigio, selected by Big Fish’s interesting wine list. The scallop menu concluded with a selection from Big Fish’s indulgent desert menu.

First up was an indulgent combination of Italian meringue with berry sorbet and Thai fruits, including dragon fruit and mango drizzle and fresh strawberries. Finally, a combination of Mango Crème Brûlée with Norwegian Omelette, and traditional Tiramisu, left these diners replete. By Norman Stacey Big Fish Restaurant & Bar is conveniently located at the seaward extremity of the Hua Hin Marriott’ resplendent site at 107/1 Phetkasem Road in central Hua Hin. Bumrungrad Health Briefs How a Doctor Detects Breast Cancer It’s important to detect breast cancer early on, which can be done by getting a mammogram regularly. If you’ve never had one, here’s what you can expect during a breast cancer screening. Breast cancer is among the most common cancers diagnosed in women. However, by detecting breast cancer early and obtaining proper follow-up treatment, you can increase your chances of survival dramatically. That is because breast cancer, as with any illness, is typically easier to treat and has a higher success rate when discovered sooner rather than later. Mammograms are used to check for breast cancer. A mammogram is a breast screening test that detects abnormal growths in the tissues of both breasts via an x-ray image. Detectable abnormalities include small calcifications, cysts, and tumors that may otherwise go unnoticed during a breast self-exam (BSE). A mammogram is the first step in determining if you have breast cancer. There are screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms. Routine screenings take less time because fewer images are needed from women who are not showing any obvious symptoms. On the other hand, diagnostic mammograms require several images at different angles and magnifications in order for the doctor to make an accurate diagnosis. This occurs when women are experiencing pain, notice a lump, or show signs of a growth in their screening. On the day of your screening, you will be asked to fill out a form listing your medical history and to make note if you are experiencing any unusual signs or symptoms. You will then be taken into a private patient room and asked to remove all jewelry and clothing from the waist up. A wrap will be provided. A nurse will guide

30

HOT Magazine

you in front of a special mammogram machine, and have you place one breast on a horizontal platform, adjusting the height accordingly. A second platform will be pressed down against the top of your breast, spreading it out to an even thickness and a steady view before an x-ray image is taken. During the process (which only lasts a few seconds), you will be asked to stand perfectly still and hold your breath. The pressure may cause discomfort. If you feel pain, notify the nurse so adjustments can be made. Shortly after your mammogram, your doctor will be able to tell you if there are signs of anything unusual. Your doctor will also tell you the next steps to take if necessary, such as additional tests, followups, or treatments. You can use the time to discuss with your doctor and learn more about your body – to become familiar with what’s normal, and learn the signs of any irregularities concerning your breasts. Women who are comfortable speaking to their doctor are less likely to ignore warning signs and are more likely to contact their doctor if they suspect any problems. Women around the age of 40 are encouraged to schedule their first baseline mammogram –and should have one every 1-2 years. However, those at higher risk of developing breast cancer, such as women with a family history of breast cancer or women who notice an unusually lump in one or both breasts, should schedule a mammogram even sooner. Have a discussion with your doctor about how often a mammogram is recommended. By Dr. Wanchalerm Nunvitipong, Breast Surgeon, Surgical Clinic, Bumrungrad Hospital

Marine Tourism Sees Growth

T

hailand's east coast has seen steady growth in the boating sector in recent years, bolstered by domestic interest in chartering and buying sailing yachts and motor craft, and supported by the region's key consumer event, the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, which is set to take place for the seventh time from 29 November to 2 December, 2018 at the award-winning Ocean Marina Yacht Club. The increased number of people going out on the water is borne out in Ocean Marina Yacht Club's own research which shows a staggering 730% increase in the number of day trippers departing Ocean Marina

34

HOT Magazine

Yacht Club between 2010 and 2017, and in Q1 2018 alone, this figure grew by 66% when compared to the same period in the previous year. Join in boat trips range from 2,000THB/ person for a fully inclusive day experience while private charters range from 25,000THB for a half day upto 700,000THB to charter a superyacht for the day. The most popular private charters departing Ocean Marina Yacht Club are in the range of 50,000THB - 100,000THB per day. This growth of join in and private charters on the east coast is being driven in large part by Thais with Millennials and Gen X together making up 60% of Thais experiencing

boating today, with weekends being the most popular time to go out on the water. “The increase in day trips and boat charters on the east coast has naturally led to more conversions into boat ownership. In terms of nationality, Thais are now the third largest enjoying day trips and charter, while we have certainly seen Thais outpacing other nationalities in boat ownership over the last few years,” said Mr. Scott Finsten, Harbour Master of Ocean Marina Yacht Club, organisers of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show. “Since the first Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show in 2012, private boat ownership in the marina has

grown by 15% and this is largely thanks to interest from the local market. More than 45% of all boats in our marina are Thai-owned, which is a healthy indicator of steady growth in marine tourism in this part of Thailand. We also see strong domestic interest in boating at the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show where 70% of visitors last year were Thai nationals.” On the back of charter growth and increased boat purchases, Ocean Marina Yacht Club completed major expansion works in August 2018 which increased the number of berths by 15% to 455, retaining its position as the largest marina in South East Asia.

Travel trends have also contributed to a growth in marine tourism as visitors seek out more individual experiences. The top five international visitors to Pattaya are China, Russia, Korea, India and Germany, and according to the ITB World Travel Trends Report 2017/18, Millennials comprise 60% of all Chinese travelling overseas. Millennials are looking for new travel experiences, to enjoy something offthe-beaten-path and boating on the East Coast has become popular with this segment.

In addition, changes to customs rules in 2016 has helped make Thailand more attractive to international visiting yachts, further contributing to overall growth in water-based activities in coastal destinations. This, together with the growth in Millennial travel, increased domestic interest in boating, the “Thailand Riviera” project and Eastern Economic Corridor – which has seen 45 Billion Baht of investment pledged by the Thai government – are expected to further the appeal of Thailand's East Coast for both business and leisure. The 7th Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show takes place 29th November to 2nd December at South East Asia's largest marina, Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya. Entry is free.

Phuket Yacht Show To Deliver What The Marine Industry Wants

T

he Phuket Yacht Show is set to become the definitive luxury yachting and lifestyle event when it welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world to the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina from 4 – 7 January, 2019. Lead by Show Director Andy Dowden and financially backed by experienced boat show operators from Turkey, Phuket Yacht Show organisers are promising to deliver the best yacht show ever seen in Phuket. “I've owned and operated boat shows in Phuket for 16 years and in my experience, combined with feedback from key stakeholders in Thailand's marine industry, Royal Phuket Marina is the ideal host venue due to its central strategic location and boardwalk facilities. And early January is the ideal time as that is when the highest number of globetrotting millionaires and billionaires are on the island,” said Dowden.

The Phuket Yacht Show will enable nautical lifestyle seekers a unique opportunity to view some of the world's most iconic brands in Thailand's premier waterfront environment and will showcase not only yachts, superyachts and marine related toys and services, but also high-end properties, fashion and accessories, super cars, fine dining and luxury products. Up to 120 exhibitors will be resident in the 2,500 sqm marinaside exhibition hall while in-thewater there is space for more than 50 yachts up to 35 metres in length. Accommodating the growing interest in superyacht sales and charter, a unique private island superyacht display will be located just five minutes from Royal Phuket Marina and accessed by private shuttle for qualified guests. Having

convinced

the

Prime

Minister of Thailand in 2003 to remove import and excise taxes on boats in his drive to make Phuket the yachting playground in Asia, Gulu Lalvani built the multi awardwinning Royal Phuket Marina and has, since its opening, been host to the island's best boat shows. “In addition to the largest and most diverse display of yachts and marine products ever, the lifestyle element of the show will be bigger than ever before. We have a number of events planned that will be part of the show including wine tastings, fashion shows, super car parades and much more. Our aim is to make Phuket Yacht Show the ultimate four day celebration of luxury and lifestyle on Phuket,” added Dowden. A World Heritage City

A

t just a little over 80 km’s to the north of Bangkok you’ll find Thailand’s capital Ayutthaya, or at least it was until the late 18th century before it was moved to Bangkok. Ayutthaya is one of the most impressive ruined cities in Asia and a must see for anyone with an affinity to history. Wandering through this once40

thriving ancient city will make you feel like you've stepped back in time. The Ayutthaya Kingdom existed from 1351 to 1767. In the 16th century, it was described by foreign traders as one of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the East. The court of King Narai (1656–1688) had strong links with that of King Louis

XIV of France, whose ambassadors compared the city in size and wealth to Paris. In foreign accounts, Ayutthaya was called Siam, but many sources say the people of Ayutthaya called themselves Tai, and their kingdom Krung Tai meaning "The Tai country.”

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND Ayutthaya began its hegemony by conquering northern kingdoms and city-states like Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet and Phitsanulok. Before the end of the 15th century, Ayutthaya launched attacks on Angkor, the great power of the region. Angkor's influence eventually faded from the Chao Phraya River Plain while

Ayutthaya became a new great power. Interestingly, the Kingdom of Ayutthaya was not a unified state but rather a patchwork of self-governing principalities and tributary provinces owing allegiance to the king of Ayutthaya under The Circle of Power, or the mandala

system. These principalities might be ruled by members of the royal family of Ayutthaya, or by local rulers who had their own independent armies, having a duty to assist the capital when war or invasion occurred.

Foreign trade brought Ayutthaya not only luxury items but also new arms and weapons. In the mid17th century, during King Narai's reign, Ayutthaya became very prosperous. In the 18th century, Ayutthaya gradually lost control over its provinces. Provincial governors exerted their power independently, and rebellions against the capital began. After a bloody period of dynastic struggle, Ayutthaya entered into what has been called the golden age, a relatively peaceful episode in the second quarter of the 18th century when art, literature, and learning flourished. There were foreign wars. Ayutthaya fought with the Nguyễn Lords (Vietnamese rulers of south Vietnam) for control of Cambodia starting around 1715. But a greater threat came from Burma, where the new Alaungpaya dynasty (Konbaung dynasty) had subdued

the Shan states. The last fifty years of the kingdom witnessed a bloody struggle among the princes. The throne was their prime target. Purges of court officials and able generals followed. The last monarch, Ekathat, originally known as Prince Anurakmontree, forced the king, who was his younger brother, to step down and took the throne himself. In 1765, a combined 40,000-strong force of Burmese armies invaded the territories of Ayutthaya from the north and west. Major outlying towns quickly capitulated. After a 14 month siege, the city of Ayutthaya capitulated and was burned in April 1767. Ayutthaya's art treasures, the libraries containing its literature, and the archives housing its historic records were almost totally destroyed, and the Burmese brought the Ayutthaya Kingdom to ruin.

The Burmese rule however lasted only a few months as they had also been fighting a simultaneous war with the Chinese and were forced to withdraw in early-1768 when Chinese forces threatened their own capital. With most Burmese forces having withdrawn, the country was reduced to chaos. All that remained of the old capital were some ruins of the royal palace. Provinces proclaimed independence under generals, rogue monks, and members of the royal family. One general, Phraya Taksin, former governor of Tak, began the reunification effort. He gathered forces and began striking back at the Burmese. He finally established a capital at Thonburi, across the Chao Phraya from the present capital, Bangkok. Taksin ascended the throne, becoming known as King Taksin.

The ruins of the historic city of Ayutthaya and "associated historic towns" in the Ayutthaya historical park have been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. When visiting Ayutthaya there is a lot to see but a few sites you should definitely check out include Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Restoration began here in 1987 taking it from a looted ruin to one of the most visited attractions in the Ayutthaya Historical Park. This large complex on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river is one of Ayutthaya's most impressive temples and offers insight into the influence of Buddhism on the Thai community. Built in the traditional Khmer style, the complex consists of a central prang or spire perched atop a rectangular base amid four smaller prang and eight chedi-like temples or merus. Reliefs portraying scenes from the life of the

Buddha once adorned the exterior of the merus, but only fragments now remain. Sunset is an especially beautiful time to visit, when the buildings glow in the late light. Another temple you won’t want to miss is Wat Phra Si Sanphetas, it is the most historically important temple in old Ayutthaya. Its three large chedis and numerous smaller ones make this Wat, also known as the King's Temple, one of the most impressive sights in the ruined city. Two of the large chedis, the eastern and central ones, were built in 1492 by King Ramathibodi II to house the ashes of his father and elder brother. His own ashes are interred in the third chedi, built in 1530 by his son and royal successor, King Boromaraja IV. All three chedis were plundered by the Burmese, though they failed to find the hundreds of small Buddha statues in bronze, crystal, silver,

lead, and gold now on display in the National Museum, one of the top attractions in Bangkok. Other smaller Buddha figures were also taken to the capital to be placed in Wat Buddhaisawan. Wat Mahathat is also definitely worth a visit. Widely believed to be built by King Ramesuan around 1384, its most famous feature is the face of a stone Buddha peeking out from among the roots at the base of a tree. The central prang here is one of the old city's most impressive edifices. In about 1625, the top portion broke off, being rebuilt in 1633 some four meters higher than before. Later, it collapsed again and only the corners survived. In 1956, a secret chamber was uncovered in the ruins. Among the treasures found inside were gold jewelry, a gold casket containing a relic of the Buddha, and fine tableware.

Bang Pa Inn Palace

One thing to be conscious of when visiting the many temples in Ayutthaya is to be respectful, especially when taking photos. Just as you wouldn’t want foreigners rudely posing for pictures in your places of worship, Thai’s take strong offence to that same type of behavior. If you are ready to take a break from temple viewing then check out the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. Set in several buildings surrounded by lily ponds, the museum was founded by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1961. It houses a number of sculptures and works from different periods throughout Thailand's early history, including several superb golden Buddha statues; gold jewelry and utensils, and ornate teak friezes. Highlights are a seated Buddha and a huge bust of the Buddha in the U Thong style. Another site worth seeing is the Bang Pa-in Palace, which dates back to the 17th century. Also known as the Summer Palace, this royal residence is one of the best-preserved compounds in the area. The buildings feature several architectural styles, including traditional Thai and Chinese structures, and there's also Phra Thinang Uthayan Phumisathian - a twostory Victorian style mansion. Another interesting spot is Ho Witthunthassana, the three-story, tower-style building used for scoping out the countryside and watching for royal elephants.

Ayuthaya Night Market

While in Ayutthaya you’ll want to be sure to avail yourself of the many restaurants lining the river serving traditional Thai food. Here your guaranteed to find new Thai dishes that you have never tried before. One dish in particular to try is the delicious original Ayutthaya noodle in black soup. If your stay is over the weekend be sure to check out their new night market open on weekends only. What’s interesting about this market is that most people walk around in traditional Thai costumes, not just the vendors but visitors alike. The Thai costumes can be rented at the market for very small money. Additional things worthwhile doing while there is renting a long tail boat for a river cruise and renting bikes to tour the city. If you have yet to visit Ayutthaya, it’s a “bucket list” worthy destination and not that difficult to get to. There is a lot to see here and we suggest you spend at least two days to see all the sites and longer if you don’t want to feel rushed.

find idioms interesting. An idiom being a term or phrase whose meaning cannot be deduced from its literal definition but instead refers to a figurative meaning that is known only through common use. When I think about the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort & Spa, two idioms come to mind, “The best of both worlds” and “Having your cake and eating it too.” The InterContinental Hua Hin Resort has two wings. Its BluPort Wing is attached to the beautiful and impressive BluPort Hua Hin Resort Mall. With over 70,000 square meters it features international retail shops, a department store, gourmet market, restaurants galore and a Cineplex. The InterContinental’s BluPort Wing comprises 40 gorgeous rooms and suites, furnished in a contemporary Thai design with an emphasis on true luxury lodging and comfort. The BluPort wing has its own picturesque swimming pool and all-day dining restaurant, Le Colonial.

Where the idioms kick in is that in addition to the InterContinental’s shopping mall side, the InterContinental also has a Beach Wing which features guest rooms, suites and villas plus luxurious amenities all overlooking the gulf of Thailand. The resort's Beach Wing contains 118 rooms and suites which range in size from 45 to 138 square metres, some with private pools and deck areas. This wing also offers La Residence Hua Hin, a private, two-storey Thai-Victorian

T

he heart of our vibrant capital city is about to beat to a different rhythm this October when it becomes host to the internationally revered Art Biennale for the first time. Aptly positioned along the coastline of its cultural center, the Chao Phraya River, the city’s pulsating artery will welcome 75 artists from 33 countries in a number of historically significant locations. The first ever Biennale began in Venice over 120 years ago as a showcase of contemporary art. With over 500,000 attendees enjoying the works displayed in Venice every two years, the hope is that Bangkok will begin its biennial journey into the artworlds historical footnotes and revel in the same success. One thing is for certain, art is a major part of Bangkokian's life on a day to day basis. The city is wash with artistic expression from graffitied walls to architectural masterpieces incorporating both modern and historic works in their structures and then there is the everyday elements we tend to miss, the expressions created by the owner of our local coffee shop for example. Home to so much religious artwork and the cultural pieces conveying the capital’s multicultural heritage, it really is already an art festival of sorts every moment of every day all year round. With a large bulk of the tourism to the city coming to indulge in the creativity Thailand has to offer them in its varying forms, it is almost natural for the city to host such a prestigious event. So, the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB), starting in October and running for 4 months until the middle of February will no doubt enrich the experience of annual visitors during the peak tourist season but should also draw a volume of art enthusiasts as well. A perfect opportunity for young native artists to flaunt their creations to a global audience, but it isn’t just about Thailand’s homegrown talent - although there are many fortunate enough to be selected to celebrate the festival - there are artists from all four corners of the globe befalling the city.

Some of the internationals bringing their artistic flair to BAB are household names, artists such as Marina Abramovic, Aurèle Ricard, Lee Bul, Francesco Clemente and Fiona Hall to name but a few. Then there are the seasoned Biennalians whom have found fame through works at previous Biennale’s around the globe, artisans such as the Russian collaborative AES+F and Chinese born French artist Yan Pei Ming. With so much world famous talent descending on the city, it would be hard to resist a trip over the capitol to engage in the festivities. Even if you aren’t that much of an art lover, per-say, the uniqueness of the works combined with the wondrous selection of locations

about town which they will be displayed is enticement enough. As is with all Biennales around the globe, the artists participating are asked to create pieces specifically for the event and are required to communicate the theme of the event - in this case ‘Beyond Bliss’ - and incorporate a communication of the venue also. Basically, their art has to express the space in which it is displayed, whether that be elements of its history, the feelings in which the artist experience when in the space or utilising parts of the structure to enhance their artistic expression. As well as doing this, they must develop a construct that clearly speaks the language of the theme. As mentioned, the theme for Bangkok’s first Biennale is ‘Beyond

Bliss’; a feeling of euphoria, an ideological and dream-like state of mind if you will, something almost unobtainable, yet regularly sort after. Quite fitting really for a nation known internationally as the ‘Land Of Smiles’. What makes the dynamic of the artworks created for the festival even more interesting is some of the locations chosen to host the works - locations steeped in cultural and historical significance such as Wat Pho, Wat Arun and The Mandarin Oriental Hotel. In all, there are 20 locations around the city to enjoy the display of the artwork during the four months and so much to cover that the meanderings of my fingers on these keys just couldn’t

even manage to cover in such a brief introduction. So, with that said, over the coming weeks, I’ll be attempting to give you an update on the magic lined up for this exciting period in the city of Bangkok’s history. But if you can’t wait till my next splatter of words, then check out the social media (links below), as regular updates, artist biographies, events, exhibits and so much more is consistently posted to help you get more familiar with, well, just about everything the event has to offer. The website, however, goes into even greater depths and lends you insightful tips on the best places to enhance your experience during the event, such as tasty restaurants, relaxing coffee shops, grand hotels and travelers rests and just about anything you could need to make your trip to Bangkok’s first ever Biennale an enjoyable experience. O

n Friday August 31st the grand opening of Vana Nava Sky took place, officially launching it as a world-class bar destination and introducing the new mixology culture. This innovative icon of Hua Hin features a glassbottomed sky deck along with top notch mixology. Ms. Proudputh Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Proud Real Estate, the company that owns and manages the Holiday Inn Resort Vana Nava Hua Hin, where Vana Nava Sky is located, along with the Vana Nava Water Jungle next door had this to say, “During overseas trips, most tourists have visited not just key tourist sites but also a spot offering a panoramic view of the city, the very spot from a skyscraper whereby they can immensely enjoy the city’s beautiful landscape. World-class destinations usually have iconic rooftop bars that are landmarks reminiscent of their city’ unique appeal. When people visit such destinations, landmark bars are on the must-visit list. So many cities around the world boast famous bar destinations, thus creating beautiful memories for visitors. Among these cities are London, New York, Paris, Shanghai and Hong Kong. To bolster Hua Hin’s image as a world-class destination, we have now launched “Vana Nava Sky”. Recruiting renowned bar designer and quality mixologists for this so special venue, we are confident that Vana Nava Sky will become Hua Hin’s new icon. From today onward, it will welcome tourists from all over the world”. Vana Nava Sky materializes from the outstanding concepts of worldrenowned Ashley Sutton, the creative mind behind several successful bars such as Maggie Choo’s and Iron Fairies in Bangkok, and Ophelia in Hong Kong. Talking about his latest bar design, Sutton said, “Vana Nava Sky presents a unique vista of Hua Hin with its 60-square-meter glass-bottomed observation deck. Located on the 27th or the highest floor of Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin, this bar is more than 110 meters above the ground. From Vana Nava Sky, everyone can enjoy the unobstructed panoramic view of Hua Hin town, sea, TaKiab Mountain and Tao Mountain. Step over the tempered low iron glass of the Sky Deck and you will feel like walking in the air. This fascinating deck can accommodate up to 40 persons each time”.

Sutton went on to say, “My background in the pearling and fishing industry in Australia influenced the Vana Nava Sky design. Mother of pearl, the queen of elegance from the sea, has inspired every aspect of décor while the arches on the ceiling represent the curvature of a wave breaking on the beach. This married with crafted timber shell panels, gives a feeling of the seaside atmosphere we all want for. I have also come up with the special selection of materials namely Cambodian sandstone, imported European fabrics and authentic leather, plus white marble from Tibet, to add extra luxury and finesse”. Joseph Boroski, a celebrity mixologist, is famous around the world for his exceptional skills and

creative cocktails. Under his belt are remarkable work experiences with luxury bars across various continents. Joining Vana Nava Sky as a consultant, he has concocted its Signature Drinks. “I focus on serving refreshing cocktails that exude the feel and taste of the sea, using seasonal and local fruits, indigenous herbs and flowers. Combining mixology with refined arts, my creations for Vana Nava Sky are available in four categories: CLOUDS, TROPICAL, SOLID and EASY. Together, they feature more than 20 items for customers to choose. Each of these items is unique in colour and taste. Thai Urban Iced Tea, a Signature Drink at Vana Nava Sky, is inspired by local iced tea that was once a legend in Hua Hin’s

Chatchai Market. We have added the modern touch to the typical drink, which used to be sold in a small bag, with its identity and Thai’ness intact. This drink is exclusively available at Vana Nava Sky only,” Boroski says. Additional talent brought in for their expertise included; Jane Kowe who was voted Thailand’s Best Bartender for 2018 by World Class, known as the toughest of all bartending competitions, Guilherme Jimenez from Chile, Shanghai’s Hottest Bartender and China’s Best Mixologist for 2018 and Khun Jib, Diageo World Class Top six contender 2017 and the first Female Bartender who made the top ten at the DIAGEO Reserve World Class 2018 competition.

Ron Ramirez, known as the Magician of Spirits & Alchemist of Asia, is Vana Nava Sky’s General Manager. Ron brings more than 15 years of experience in hotel and luxury-bar management and had this to say, “I trust that my mixology and culinary experience in several countries across the world has enriched my creativity for unique beverages and drinks and I have prepared a variety of them as a perfect match with Vana Nava Sky’s International Tapas. Vana Nava Sky is now the only place in Hua Hin where you can enjoy Sky Brunch or a brunch up high on a deck. Diners can enjoy the stunning view alongside delicious food that has been specially designed for each month. This is a perfect place to hangout with friends and also for spending memorable time with someone special,” Ramirez says. The highest bar and terrace in Hua Hin, soaring star-wards on level 27 of Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin, there’s nowhere else quite like it for soaking up a stunning sunset and sliding into exciting seaside nightlife vibes. Vana Nava Sky can host remarkable special events and private parties for up to 100 guests and is open every day, 11am – midnight.

Increase Your Mental Strength For A More Fulfilling Life

M

any people strive to live within their comfort zone thinking that it will lead to a stress-free existence where they will feel content and secure. Surprising to many however is that this comfort zone existence is a state which highly successful people try their best to avoid. By running from discomfort all the time, you are restricted to a small zone of comfort, and so you miss out on most of life. On most of the best things in life, in fact. And you can become unhealthy because if eating healthy food and exercising is uncomfortable, then you go to comfort foods and not moving much. Being unhealthy, unfortunately, is also uncomfortable, so then you seek distractions from this in food and entertainment and shopping (as if spending will solve our problems!) and this in turn makes things worse. What's the solution? Try to do at least one uncomfortable thing every day. Eat something healthy that you've never had before. Do math without a calculator. Walk to work instead of driving (if it's feasible). The more you choose to tackle uncomfortable tasks willingly, the more you'll be able to handle it when you don't have a choice and in doing so it will make you mentally stronger, which is a good thing.

Below are 10 other things mentally strong people do: 1. They practice gratitude. Instead of focusing on their burdens or what they don’t have, mentally strong people take stock of all the great things they do have. There are several ways to practice gratitude, but the simplest way to start is just by thinking of three things you’re grateful for each day. You can also start a gratitude journal to jot down all the good things you experienced throughout the day or adopt gratitude rituals, such as saying grace before a meal.

2. They say “no.” Research from the University of California in San Francisco shows that the more difficulty you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression. Saying “no” may be a problem for some, but not for the mentally strong. Instead of accepting every social invite or helping co-workers with every

project, they just say “no.” This way, they can complete their own work and not overcommit themselves. Billionaire investor Warren Buffet takes it a step further saying “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.”

3. They overcome their inner critic. If you think you’re a failure, guess what? You’ll probably end up failing. That self-fulfilling prophecy is predicting your fate. Instead, use that self-fulfilling prophecy to your advantage by believing you’re going to succeed. This can be a challenge, but it’s possible if you pay attention to your thoughts. Don’t ignore those negative thoughts -- acknowledge them, and then do something positive to distract yourself. Take a look at the evidence on both sides. By jotting down the good and the bad, you’ll notice that some of those negative thoughts are irrational. Find balance: Rather than beat yourself up, look at your flaws as ways to improve.

4. They expose themselves to pain. Muhammad Ali once said that he didn't count all of his sit-ups; he only started counting when it hurt because those were the ones that counted. Mentally strong people are willing to endure pain as long as there's a purpose. They don’t go through a challenging workout, for example, just to prove how tough they are. After all, science has said that there’s some truth to that old saying “No pain, no gain.”

5. They delay gratification. There’s a well-known Stanford University study in which an administrator left a child alone with a marshmallow for 15 minutes. The experimenter, before leaving, told the child that she could eat the marshmallow. However, if she waited until he returned, she would get a second marshmallow. After 40 years of research, it was found that the children who waited experienced better outcomes in life, including higher SAT scores, greater career success and even a lower body mass index. The point is that delaying gratification is paramount to success. That’s why people with mental strength are willing to put off gratification. They know that results only take place after they’ve put in the time and effort.

Mentally strong people never, and I mean never, blame others for their mistakes or shortcomings. They take full responsibility for their actions. Doing so means they don’t give power to others, remain stuck or become negative people.

realistic optimism instead. This means they take into account the challenges facing them and focus on what they can do to accept or overcome those realities. I've found that most start with scheduling things ahead of when they need to be done. This way they are optimistic and have wiggle room.

7. They practice realistic optimism.

8. They acknowledge their limitations.

Mentally strong are optimistic. But they also understand that they can’t be overly optimistic. As Dr. Mara Karpel explains, “It’s unproductive to believe that challenges will magically disappear or goals will be manifested without taking any action in the real world.”

Although the mentally strong push themselves, they also know when it’s time to throw in the proverbial towel. They’re aware of their weaknesses, and they don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.

6. They don’t blame others.

Mentally strong people practice 72

While some leaders are hesitant to show vulnerability, doing so enables them to learn more and become better

than they were yesterday. Enhancing their skill set is more important than protecting their ego.

9. They don’t compare themselves to others. Remember, the mentally strong are stingy with their time and energy. So why waste it on worrying about what others are doing? Feelings like jealousy and resentment aren’t just exhausting; they’re pointless. Instead, they appreciate others and celebrate their accomplishments with them. This creates optimism -- which is a win-win for everyone. According to a Harvard University study, a sense of optimism may be able to reduce the risk from dying of major causes, such as cardiovascular disease.

10. They respect, and even like, their competitors. Mentally strong people aren’t afraid, intimidated by or jealous of their competitors. In fact, they respect and even like them. They realize their competitors can be their greatest teachers. They can learn what the competition did right or wrong. They can see what differentiates them and use that as inspiration for their own next move.

each other, with Gates once saying, "I’d give a lot to have Steve’s taste." Jobs admitted, "I admire him for the company he built — it’s impressive — and I enjoyed working with him. He’s bright and actually has a good sense of humor." Becoming mentally strong doesn't happen overnight, but it's worth the journey. It can make you resilient enough to withstand anything.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had a lovehate relationship. However, both men ultimately supported and respected

Hari V. Krishnan, CEO of PropertyGuru Group, said: “I am delighted to congratulate all the Winners and

Highly Commended companies in Thailand. Year after year these developers have shown the spirit of ingenuity and tenacity to adapt and cater to consumers’ evolving needs, producing projects for niche segments like senior living and co-working spaces, and setting a standard of quality for the rest of their Asian neighbours.” Marking his 11th year as Head Judge of the Hua Hin judging panel, Russ Downing, Managing Director of HOT Hua Hin Property had this to say, “Real Estate is a contact sport, if you are not standing out you are invisible and this year’s TPA winners all certainly stood out.”

Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards, said: “The Thailand Property Awards remain the showcase event of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards season. Nowhere else in Asia do we see such creativity, dedication to innovation and commitment to growth. Developers from everywhere in Southeast Asia look here to learn and to be inspired, which is why we will be returning in November to host our Grand Final in Bangkok for the first time.” In his welcoming remarks at the ceremony, Blackburn, who launched the Asia Property Awards series 13 years ago and organised the first-ever Thailand Property Awards gala dinner in 2006, reiterated that whilst the awards programme has evolved, its “core fundamentals have remained the same” and it continues to be the gold standard in real estate. He added that Thailand will be hosting the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final on 9 November, marking the first time that it is being held in the country.
