elcome to Issue 2, Volume 7 of HOT Magazine. The Thai Polo & Equestrian Club, located in Pattaya, is impressive by anyone’s standard. Spread across 2,000, rai it contains three full-sized internationalstandard polo fields, each with its own clubhouse. All three clubhouses were designed to the specifications laid out by Khun Nunthinee Tanner, Thailand’s first female professional polo player. Her love for polo and all it represents, can be seen in the way the clubhouses are sited and designed, with the aim of allowing guests to be able to watch polo matches in relative comfort and style. It was she who traveled to London to buy all the contents of the famous Chukka Bar when the Langham hotel, where the Chukka Bar was housed, went thru a major renovation. The famed Langham Hotel in central London was the first deluxe grand hotel in Europe when it opened in 1865, and the polo-centric Chukka Bar was a key attraction. The original Chukka Bar which was closed in 2006 has been reincarnated at the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club, complete with polo trophies, historical photos, and polo paraphernalia. The bar provides the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club with a lasting connection to the history of polo, as well as a comfortable platform to enjoy after polo refreshments and retellings of the day’s achievements. Recently, one of the most prominent competitions in Asia, the B. Grimm Thai Polo Open 2019 saw the best polo players across the region gather at the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club officially kick-starting Thailand’s polo season. Four teams from Thailand, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong were competing this year for the prestigious HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup. Dig out your polo mallet and join us on page 48 for all the action on and off the polo field.

I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again. One of the great things about living in a resort town like Hua Hin is all of the events and festivals that take place during the year. Beginning at the end of last month, just after the Australian Open, the WTA came to Hua Hin with the Toyota Thailand Open. The WTA Thailand Open 2019 was all about the upcoming stars – players in the top 100 rankings. Many coming directly from the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar. Held at Hua Hin’s True Arena, the $250,000 USD tournament went on over a 9 day period culminating with the final match on Sunday February 3rd. It wasn’t just about tennis though, the players had plenty of time for a variety of events around town. Turn to page 54 to check out all of their activity and to find out who went home with a big pay day. Yachting enthusiasts and wealthy lifestyle-seekers from around the region headed to Phuket last month for the fourth Thailand Yacht Show and Rendezvous. The event provided a perfect platform for the best of Thailand’s yachting and luxury hospitality industries, cementing Thailand as a world-class holiday destination. Another opportunity to put on your deck shoes and turn to page 70 to see why you should get out on the water and experience the boating lifestyle in one of the world’s most beautiful yachting destinations. Those are just a few of the stories you’ll find inside this month’s issue of HOT. As always, thank you for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

Wine Tasting @ The Palm Bistro This writer finds it very difficult to pass up a wine tasting event, especially if it promises wines from small, unique, artisanal vineyards from across many of the known wine producing countries. The Palm Bistro was the venue for this wine tasting, and though Jenny Ayling and her team are seasoned event organisers, this was a first-time event for them. Centrally positioned in The Palm Bistro’s open-air courtyard was the table of wines for tasting. Some 15 wines from as far away as Australia and Chile, plus strong representation from boutique vineyards in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Austria and Germany. ‘Wine Garage’ is who The Palm Bistro teamed up with for this event. Based in Bangkok, ‘Wine Garage’ is a retail wine store and wine merchant, happy to ship to any part of Thailand. Wine Garage was founded with the idea of getting people excited about discovering hidden gems in the vast wine universe. Wine Garage founders, Kim and Philippe, together have some 40 years’ experience in the wine business. Certified by the American Sommelier Association, Wine & Spirits Education Trust and winemaking school in Switzerland, their expertise is without question. Though wine was the focus of the evening, The Palm Bistro kept the 40 or more crowd nicely fed with trays of canapes like petit wonton cups filled with chicken larb (Larb Gai); bruschetta topped with beetroot and cream cheese, salmon mouse on cucumber rounds, delicate slices of duck breast in wonton cups, and individual sesame prawns. Excellent treats that worked well with the wines being tasted. Judging by the immensely positive chatter about the quality of wines being tasted and the number of order forms being filled out, I would say the evening was a great success for all concerned. Serving great food in their family bistro since 2010, The Palm Bistro has a spacious seating area with open & covered terrace. Visit their website, www.thepalmbistro.com for more details on what they offer and location. For information on the wines offered by Wine Garage go to www.winegarage.asia By Michael Cullen

HOT AROUND BANGKOK Mrs. Chadatip Chutrakul, Director of ICONSIAM Co., Ltd., said, “ICONSIAM marks the bringing to life of the concept of ‘Creating Shared Value’ on a scale as never before been seen anywhere in the world. The ‘Chao Phraya Master Vision’ was announced 5 years ago, pioneering a historical and national collaboration among multiple different enterprises, the government and private sectors, historic locations, civil society, 5-star hotels and communities along the riverside. Since its launch, there have been many collaborations, with the best example being the Amazing Thailand Countdown 2019 and its fireworks display which was viewed by more 1.5 million people. ICONSIAM itself welcomed more than 200,000 visitors in a single day for the event. The event brought fame to Thailand and let the world witness the grandeur and beauty of the Chao Phraya River via the world’s leading media such as CNN, BBC, and Reuters. This is a part of the collaborations envisaged in the ‘Chao Phraya Master Vision’ to help make the Chao Phraya River a significant global destination for tourism.” One of the highlights of the ICONIC Multimedia Water Features is the shooting up of water jets using compressed air technology in combination with a technique of shooting 2D, 3D and 4D jets that can spin. The jets are shot up into the air at different heights, the highest of which is around 35 metres. Another highlight is the use of cybernetic technology to shoot fountain jets in bursts of 0.1 second to create images of flowers as well as form a water curtain on which to project images to the accompaniment of Thai music. It is a perfect blend of modernity and traditional Thai customs. The ICONIC Multimedia Water Features is open to the public free of charge every day and has 3 shows, daily, at 18.30, 20.00 and 21.00, at River Park, ICONSIAM. ICONSIAM is holding a photography contest for the ICONIC Multimedia Water Features with the theme ‘The Symphony of the Chao Phraya River’ to promote tourism by showing the beauty of Thailand’s new global attraction through photographs. Members of the public are invited to submit entries in two categories: photos from photography cameras and photos from smartphone cameras. Up for grabs are prizes valued at a total of THB 800,000. Contestants may start posting their photographs from 25 January onwards. Winners will be announced on 25 February 2019. For more information, please go to www.iconsiam.com.

T

he Thailand Tourism Forum (TTF) returned for its eighth edition, with an action-packed agenda focusing on the mega-projects that are currently transforming the tourism landscape in Bangkok and beyond. Running under the theme “Managing Tourism - Ensuring Great Experiences and Sustainable Outcomes,” Thailand’s largest annual hospitality event secured a record audience of 850 tourism and hospitality industry leaders at the InterContinental Hotel Bangkok for a full afternoon of interactive and informative on-stage sessions. The keynote speaker was Ms. Supaluck Umpujh, Chairwoman of The Mall Group Co., Ltd, who discussed the “Importance of Retail, Entertainment & Hospitality – Better Tourism Experiences” alongside Charles Blocker, CEO of IC Partners. In her role as Chairwoman of one of Thailand’s largest retail operators, Miss Supaluck oversees some of the Kingdom’s biggest attractions including The Emporium, EmQuartier, Siam Paragon and The Mall in Bangkok The Mall Group also recently announced a landmark strategic partnership with US-based AEG Worldwide, the world’s leading sports and live entertainment company, that will include multi-billion-baht investments in two world-class arenas – “EM Live and BANGKOK ARENA”. TTF 2019 zeroed in on how Thailand’s tourism sector is getting a massive makeover. With international visitor arrivals continuing to shatter all previous records and Bangkok becoming the world’s most-visited city*, the event examined how the country is developing new infrastructure and facilities to cope with the influx. These include huge integrated tourism projects, vast retail attractions, branded theme parks, urban transport networks, airport rail links and more. TTF 2019 comes at a critical crossroads for Thailand’s tourism industry. As growth rates continue to soar, the country needs to evolve and expand its tourism infrastructure to cope with rising demand. TTF 2019 focused on the major new developments currently taking place in the Kingdom, while looking ahead to the future and discussing how Thailand’s tourism industry should be managed to ensure its long-term success,” said Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks and coorganiser of TTF 2019. “We were delighted to have Khun Supaluck as the keynote speaker of TTF 2019. With The Mall Group, she has transformed the concept of the mall from a retail experience to an integrated tourism, shopping and lifestyle destination. This is reflected by the recent partnership with AEG, which will create world-class experiences and attractions. I am confident that her vision and expertise will provide genuine insights for our audience,” he added.

E

ight years in business is quite an achievement, and even more so when it’s in the sometimes fickle restaurant game. That’s exactly what the restaurant we visited recently proudly boasts. They have to be doing something right to keep the doors open and customers coming back for all these years, despite competition opening up across Hua Hin constantly. So what is it that makes ‘The Palms Bistro’ a constant in Hua Hin’s forever changing food scene?

20

The large undercover relaxed, open-air seating options are certainly inviting. Welcoming staff got us to a table and settled very quickly ensuring drinks are ordered, and menus delivered. The large blackboard - full of specials and recommended dishes, makes deciding what to eat more of a challenge than expected. Choices! Choices! We would not be able to eat all that attracted us in one sitting. Our group decided to share starters with a generous portion of

Chefs Chicken Liver Pate served with wholemeal toast and surprising tasty pineapple chutney. This was accompanied by a platter of hummus, artichokes, baby gherkins and olives with two styles of toast. All Mediterranean taste delights. To round out our starters we chose the deep fried spicy Pork Larp balls (Larb Moo Tod) from Palm Bistro’s Thai menu. A gentleman on the neighbouring table complimented us on choosing the Larb Moo Tod. In fact, he recommends this dish as

HOT MAGAZINE RECOMMEND the best possible accompaniment for a cold beer and now having tasted them I can see where he’s coming from. For mains, we mixed the dishes up again. Firstly two from Asia. Thai red curry Duck – delicate slices of duck breast with baby Thai eggplants and cherry tomatoes in a well-balanced red curry coconut soup served with steamed rice. And a Chicken and Spinach Balti curry served with steamed rice and a ‘fresh from the pan’ fluffy Roti bread.

Next a fusion dish which Palm Bistro do so well. Steamed Sea Bass fillets served like a layered tower atop sautéed mushroom and spinach, and at the base, potato mash in a bowl of lemongrass flavoured coconut cream. What a great combination and presentations. Delicate steamed fish, creamy mash, the ‘just right’ infused coconut cream and the textures of sautéed spinach and mushrooms. And for our final main dish, we went with the recommendation of another friendly diner who said we

must have the battered Fish and Chips. By his assessment – the best Fish and Chips east of London! And judging by his Austrian or German accent, I don’t think this was some blind nationalistic recommendation. The batter was crispy and crunchy yet still thin and evenly cooked. The generous piece of fish inside moist and perfectly cooked and the large chips worthy accompaniment as were the mushy peas and tartare sauce.

When venturing out for an evening like this, dessert must make an appearance! The Chef’s fresh baked Sticky Toffee Pudding, and by our assessment at least, the ‘to die for’ Chocolate Brownie. Both served with vanilla ice-cream and whipped cream. Pudding heaven! For the not so sweet tooth on our table, the cheese platter with Port got my vote. Four different cheese, crackers, Pineapple chutney, grapes, and a glass of Port wine. What’s not to like about that offering to finish a meal – or at least, that’s how this correspondent thinks. The atmosphere was relaxed yet professional and service throughout the evening was attentive with staff happy to describe dished as they arrived and also ensuring drinks were regularly replenished. The Palm Bistro offers breakfast and lunch options from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm daily. Their Lunch Special of a Wrap with fillings like Prawn or Chicken Caesar Salad, Cajun Chicken with Bacon and Chilli Mayo, or for a vegetarian option, Feta and Spinach with a spicy tomato sauce. Or Paninis with typical Mediterranean fillings. Your Wrap or Panini is served with your choice of French Fries or Chef’s Soup of the Day – all for 199 Baht. There is also a selection of burgers or sandwiches if not taking the lunch special.

Wanting an early dinner, then why not take advantage of the ‘Early Birds’ special available to diners from 5:30 to 6:30 pm Tuesday to Saturday, and get two courses – starter & a main or a main and a dessert, for only 320 Baht. If roast lunches are your thing, then the Sunday Lunch Club is worth checking out. Every Sunday Palm Bistro’s famous roast lunch is served 1:00 to 5:00 pm. A delightful quarto of Roast Lamb, Beef, Chicken & Pork. You can choose either a duo or single selection. All served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, spring onion mash, seasonal vegetables and gravy. Palm Bistro also prides itself on its selection of English Ales, Ciders and American Craft Beers – with several of these available on tap just as the connoisseur would prefer. L et’s Meet,

Jean-Matthieu Beroujon

26

HOT Magazine

What is your full name and age? My name is Jean-Matthieu Beroujon, but since it can be difficult to pronounce for nonFrench speakers, I am used to being called by my nickname, Matt. I just turned 40 years old in December.

What is your current Job Position? I am currently the General Manager of Amari Hua Hin, part of Onyx Hospitality, a leading Asia-Pacific hotel management company, offering a range of hotels, resorts, serviced apartments and spa brands consisting of the established Amari collection of full-service hotels, leading serviced apartment provider Shama, the midscale OZO brand, the designled YOO Collection and Yoo2, and Breeze Spa - a fresh new take on Asian wellness.

How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I arrived in Hua Hin in January of this year. While I have lived in Bangkok and Koh Lanta, this is actually my first time in Hua Hin.

What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I knew Hua Hin from its golf course reputation as well as for being a preferred summer destination of the Royal Family, making it a more upscale and relaxing resort destination than other similar seaside areas in Thailand.

What do you like most about your profession? As a teenager in my hometown of Lyon in France, I had a dream to travel around the world and visit iconic places in large cities like New York, Bangkok and Tokyo and also tropical islands in the Caribbean, Bora Bora in French Polynesia and exotic destinations in Southeast Asia. The hospitality business allowed me to follow this dream and to work in over 14 countries. I enjoyed learning about the various people and cultures that I encountered.

What do you like least about your profession? Hospitality is a great industry but it is also a demanding one, which never stops, and it can sometimes be difficult to find the right balance between work and private life. Holidays like Christmas or New Year are less about family and friends, for most hoteliers, and more about full occupancy, revenue, gala dinners and guest satisfaction.

What is your favorite restaurant and why? (please don’t promote your own restaurants) As I am still quite new in town, I haven’t had the opportunity to experience too many restaurants. My craving for different kinds of food is great and, therefore, I enjoy experiencing many types of cuisine on a regular basis. For a restaurant to become my favorite, quality of food has to be matched by quality of service and the friendliness of the team.

What do you like to do in your free time and why? I am a nature enthusiast and like going for walks in parks or mountains, away from civilization. I also enjoy discovering new things, visiting new places and trying new activities. Kite surfing seems to be fun and is on my list. I also like cooking and trying new recipes.

What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? I would recommend they explore all of Hua Hin because it has a lot to offer from family waterparks to international golf courses and watersports facilities and, of course, great food, particularly the fresh seafood.

Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? A few years ago, I became overweight from too many hours working in the kitchen and not enough time exercising. I decided to start running, which, at first, I could only do for short distances. However, one of my colleagues challenged me to run with him a half marathon, which was an amazing experience, not only physically but also mentally. I now run regularly and join at least two half marathons per year.

What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? It is a difficult question to answer since I have had so many different and unique experiences as a result of my travels. The most memorable involved dealing with nature and animals, from diving with sharks in the Bora Bora Lagoon in French Polynesia to having dinner in the jungle of Laos with local villagers of the Kamu tribe and, finally, riding on the back of an elephant in Koh Lanta.

What do you like most about Hua Hin? I like Hua Hin because it offers a nice environment for a good work life balance as well as its proximity to Bangkok, but also having its own shopping malls, international hospitals, plenty of restaurants and lots of activities to do.

CROSSROADS Maldives Redefines The Islands' Vacation Experience

A

sk most people what images the Maldives conjures and chances are its cerulean seas, palm-fringed bays and overwater villas that will top the bill. The Indian Ocean archipelago is also often described as the holiday destination of a lifetime — a kind reference to its reputation as an ultraluxury that is considered beyond the reach of many travellers. A brand-new development is, however, redefining this perception. By reviving the islands’ rich history as a meeting point for people from all walks of life, CROSSROADS Maldives is set to introduce the onetime exclusive Maldivian experience to a new generation of 21st-century explorers. The 178-key Hard Rock Hotel Maldives will feature family suites, beach villas and one and twobedroom overwater villas complete with stunning views, infinity pools and legendary amenities, while SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton caters to couples, families and friends in search of a playful destination getaway with its 198 guestrooms and stunning variety of villas. The resorts, scheduled to welcome their first guests in June 2019, command dedicated islands, both

of which offer direct access to the array of leisure and lifestyle options at The Marina @ CROSSROADS, the centrepiece — and heartbeat — of the development. “Only fifteen minutes by boat from Malé International Airport, the lifestyle island combines worldrenowned restaurants and retail outlets with cultural activities, an iconic beach club and leading-edge events hall — all centred around the eponymous luxury yacht marina,” says Martin van der Reijden, Vice President of Operations, CROSSROADS Maldives. Many of the retail outlets and restaurants at The Marina @ CROSSROADS are located along the expansive, breezy boardwalk, including the culinary delights of Sri Lankan chef Dharshan Munidasa’s Ministry of Crab and Nihonbashi, both of which are listed in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list 2018. The

island really comes to life as the sun plunges into the Indian Ocean. From the live sounds of Hard Rock Cafe to the laid-back beats at the iconic Café del Mar beach club – both firsts for the Maldives – a day at The Marina @ CROSSROADS caters to all tastes. From international cuisine to local culture, a considerable onus is placed on promoting the Maldives’ heritage. At the Maldives Discovery Centre, visitors are given a window into the world of their host nation and its inhabitants that aims to enlighten guests on the history, handicrafts and time-honoured traditions that have shaped the islands over the centuries. Local culture also plays a key role in the design and style throughout the CROSSROADS Maldives development. Designed with an eye towards days gone by, and mindful of the natural environment, CROSSROADS Maldives, much like the archipelago’s history, showcases

a rich tapestry of colourful and cultural influences. “The references of the far-flung cultures that for centuries traded in Maldives have been tastefully mixed with local identity and seafaring flair to shape the playful design philosophy at CROSSROADS Maldives,” says Dirk De Cuyper, Chief Hospitality Officer, S Hotels & Resorts. “We’ve looked at the past to present our vision of the future of tourism in the Maldives; a future that will focus on inclusivity, accessibility and sustainability.” The sustainable practices however go beyond action to incorporate education, which is where Marine Discovery Centre plays such a vital role. Located within The Marina @ CROSSROADS, the Marine Discovery Centre aims to educate and inspire both the local community and resort guests on how they can make a difference. Experts will

educate visitors on the diversity of local marine flora, fauna and wildlife, and the latest coral propagation programmes, including coral transplantation activities and the ‘3R concept’: Recruit, Rehabilitation, Release. “To truly understand the Maldives is to understand the sheer significance of the sea; how it has shaped the archipelago and will continue to do so long after we have gone,” adds Dirk De Cuyper. “To underestimate our impact would be to jeopardise the future of the marine life and local communities.” To discover more about CROSSROADS Maldives, visit www.crossroadsmaldives.com

Buriram

L

ocated about 410 km from Bangkok, Buriram is one of the smallest provinces in Thailand but it has ancient roots dating way back to the ancient Khmer period. It is situated in the lower part of the northeastern region, the border of Oddar Meanchaeay in Cambodia lies to the southeast of the city. There are no beaches here and the nightlife is not as it is in Bangkok, Phuket or Pattaya. But literally named “the city of happiness” there is more to Buriram than what meets the eye. Fifteen years

ago, Buriram appeared as a speck on the map when the city announced an ambitious path to establish itself as Thailand’s ‘City of Sports’. Considered a far dream for a city of roughly 200,000 people, the dream is now a reality with the establishment of the local football team, Buriram United. In response to Buriram’s title, Newin Chidchob, developer of the Buriram’s CIC F1 racetrack said in 2013: “"Buriram doesn't have the sea like Pattaya, doesn't have mountains like Chiang Mai, so we will make Buriram

the city of sports.” Buriram’s history can be seen in the ancient ruins and sandstone sanctuaries scattered throughout the province, the largest of which stands on an extinct volcano in the Phanom Rung Historical Park. The Khmer Emperor ruled over Buriram until the late 19th century when it was formally recognized as a province of Thailand. The population is mostly Khmer and they speak either Issan or northern Khmer in everyday life. Buriram is also the home of Chang Beer. But Buriram

gives a sleepier vibe—it pulses gently to a different rhythm in comparison to the rest of the Thailand. Buriram is well known for their football club Buriram United, the toast of the Thai Premier League, of which the locals are very proud. They play at i-Mobile Stadium which is also known as Thunder Castle because of the loud singing & chanting. The 150acre site has a capacity of 32,600 people with parking for 500 cars and 1,000 motorcycles. Much of the city’s tourist attractions are focused on the sport.

The stadium also hosts the annual Songkran festival. Tens and thousands of people descend to the open ground in April for a massive party with live music, DJ’s, foam parties and lots and lots of water. Just behind the football stadium lies the Buriram United International Circuit. It has exploded onto the motorsports scene, propelling Thailand onto the international stage for the first time. Now also known as Chang International Circuit thanks to a sponsorship deal with the brewery, the

circuit has been created to the highest FIA and FIM standards. On 22 March 2015, the first ever Thailand round of the World Superbike Championship was held at the circuit. The World Supersport race was won by Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot, much to the delight of the Thai spectators. In September 2017, Dorna Sports confirmed that the MotoGP would take place at the Buriram International Circuit called the PTT Thailand Grand Prix, with a three year commitment which started in 2018 and will run to 2020. .

Outside of sports there is plenty to do and see in Buriram. The Phanom Rung National Park is found an hour’s drive from the city centre and is no doubt the main draw to the province. The ruins of Phamonrung Historical Park make up part of a 225-kilometre roadway built by the Angkor Empire, known as the Khmer Highway, which leads from neighboring Cambodia and includes the famous temples of Angkor Wat. The ancient site also hosts an annual festival to celebrate the morning sunrise when it aligns with the doorways of the old temple sanctuary. To mark the occasion, there are parades, performances and shows of traditional dress and culture to celebrate the Hindu god Shiva and the rich cultures which once presided over these ancient Khmer ruins. Phanom Rung is found on top of a now extinct volcano next to the Thai-Cambodia border Prasat Muang Tam would be the second most significant Khmer site in Buriram Province, and is found not so far from Phanom Rung, meaning both should be visited on the same itinerary. And tickets for either can be sold separately or as a joint ticket for the two sites. Again, like Phanomrung, Prasat Muang Tam is dedicated to the Hindu god, Lord Shiva. Prasat Muang Tam is found on flatter, lower lands of this otherwise hilly region, where man-made 36

reservoirs known as “Ba Rai” were used to supply nearby villages with water. As these regions are very arid at times, outside of rainy season, it is said that it was drought which inevitably led to the end of ancient Khmer civilisations. For this reason these ancient Khmer temples are focused on collecting water and fertilizing lands. Play La Ploen Flora Park is the first and only flower park in the northeast. There are scaled-down versions of famous landmarks from around the world like the Eiffel Tower, Great Wall of China, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Tower Bridge etc. but the main attraction here is the beautiful Flora section dedicated to a huge assortment of plant life. Nestled in the compound of the 380rai Play La Ploen Flora Park is The Naturalist by Play La Ploen, a four-star boutique resort suitable for families, solo travellers and couples. Guests can enjoy various activities at the adjacent flora park, an adventure camp, and farms. The hotel also provides cooking and ice cream making classes upon request. Before the excitement of sports and stadiums, the main tourist attraction in Buriram City was Khao Kradong Forest Park, found on top of a now extinct volcano around 10km from the city centre. The location is also near

enough to the stadiums, and it maybe best to share a taxi between both these attractions in Buriram, starting with Khao Kradong, before jumping out at the stadium area. Because Khao Kradong Forest Park could easily be covered in under an hour, as most people are only interested in the big Buddha Statue ‘Phra Suphatbophit’ which sits on top of the mountain. If you would like to make the most of your visit, there is the surrounding national park with walks and a nature trail. Fun fact, the site is named ‘Kradong’ after the Khmer (Cambodian) word for turtle shell, due to the shape of the mountain. A favorite attraction in the Pak Chong Area is the Khao Lak Chang Bat Cave. The cave is located about 6 kilometers outside the Khao Yai National Park. Here you will see millions of Bats leaving their cave to go and feed. The cave is located high up on the hillside but it is visible from the bottom, it is easily recognizable due to the railings in front of the entrance. At dusk, between 6 and 6.30 pm the bats start leaving the cave, slowly building in numbers they stream out over the treetops and give the impression of a giant ribbon swaying through the sky. There are several resorts and restaurants in the area, and you can arrange full day or half day tours.

Another interesting place to visit when in Buriram is the Silk Weaving Village of Amphoe Na Pho. Supported by the Royal Folk Arts and Craft Centre under the patronage of HM Queen Sikrit, Visitors here can watch the fascinating process of how the silk is made and try their hand at spinning the silk threads. Chillingly, you can also try eating the larvae. (reported to taste like boiled potatoes) Buriram has a tropical savannah climate. Winters (from December to February) are particularly dry. Temperatures remain warm even during the monsoon season. With that in mind, the best time to come to Buriram is from December to the end of March. The weather is generally pleasant then, with the occasional heavy shower but maybe avoid coming here in May and September since it’s the rainiest months of the year. By air, Nok Air and Air Asia fly daily to Buriram from Don Mueng Airport in Bangkok however it is recommended that you check the schedule first. On land, there are buses leaving Bangkok’s Chatuchak and Mo Chit Bus Terminal every day, both ordinary and air-conditioned. Nakomchai Air’s bus company is also a preferred bus service used to travel to Buriram. The journey takes roughly 7 hours and all buses stop at the city bus terminal on the outskirts of Buriram city, from where you can take a tuk-tuk to take you to your hotel. If you prefer taking the train, you can choose from rapid, express and ordinary trains from Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani; BangkokSurin; and Nakhon Ratchasima-Ubon Ratchathani. Motorbikes and tuktuks are popularly used to get around Buriram but be prepared to bargain beforehand while taking the meter taxis. It is recommended to rent a car during your trip as it is more convenient to explore the top tourist attractions in Buriram, given the more notable Buriram attractions are found in the wider province After big investment in establishing Buriram as Thailand’s “City of Sports”, this otherwise unknown town has been put on the globe as a new, vibrant and dynamic city, or at least in parts. Besides sports, Buriram is a city rich with culture and heritage, an ideal city to bring your camera and capture the amazing varied sights.

ocated on Kantiang Bay, arguably one of Thailand’s most admired beach, Koh Lanta’s first five-star resort remains the place to be on the island. Since it opened its doors more than a decade ago on a 100acre piece of land, the 121-room property has become a regular haunt for A-listers and repeat guests from all over the globe returning for their annual Pimalai pilgrimage. Accommodation ranges from secluded pool villas hidden away in the hillside forest to beachfront suites situated only a few bare footsteps from the ocean. The onsite amenities, including the gym, dance studio and spa, are suitably five star — as is the food at the three signature restaurants — and in addition to the excursions organised by Scubafish the resort also runs its own exclusive cruises to Koh Haa.

An ideal alternative for guests who want to soak up the stunning marine scenery of Koh Haa without the seriousness of scuba diving, the leisurely fivehour trip to Koh Haa combines canapes, free-flow drinks and the chance to snorkel or swim in The Lagoon. “There aren’t many better ways to spend an afternoon on the Andaman Sea,” jokes Franck de Lestapis, Pimalai’s long-serving general manager. Referring to Koh Haa’s relative lack of reputation, Franck adds that it mirrors how Koh Lanta as a destination has flown under the tourist radar for many years. “We are incredibly fortunate to have such incredible natural attractions on our doorstep, especially ones that have not been damaged by irresponsible tourism,” he says. “It is our responsibility to ensure they stay this way, while also making sure that people know that these authentic Thai experiences still exist and can be enjoyed.” Koh Lanta’s first five-star resort, Pimalai Resort & Spa has been redefining luxury hospitality on the Andaman Island since it launched almost two decades ago. The award-winning property, located on the laid-back southern tip, cascades through 100 acres of tropical jungles easing its way towards one of Thailand’s best beaches: Kantiang Bay. It’s here that guests while the days away lounging on what often feels like a private beach or spend action-packed afternoons out in the cerulean sea scuba diving, snorkelling or simply relaxing on a sunset cruise. A smattering of local bars and restaurants line the beach, but its Pimalai’s onsite eateries that tend to steal the show. The legendary Rak Talay beachfront bar and restaurant is as loved for the sumptuous Thai-style seafood as it is its sunset setting, while nestled in the resort’s jungle interior, Seven Seas serves up Michelin-chefconceived menus throughout the evening. Guests can also indulge in an array of onsite wellness experiences, ranging from traditional Muay Thai classes to early evening tennis matches and pampered afternoons at the signature Pimalai Spa.

With no immediate neighbours, the 121room resort is a serene sanctuary where guests can feel completely at peace in their private surroundings. From Hillside Ocean Pool Villas that command vistas of the stunning scenery through to the Beachside Villas, situated only a few short steps away from the shoreline, rooms at Pimalai cater to all tastes with spacious layouts and designs that seamlessly integrate with the natural surroundings. In keeping with Koh Lanta’s low-key, laid-back mindset, Pimalai Resort & Spa offers guests from all corners of the globe the opportunity to savour a truly authentic Thai island experience in their very own private sanctuary. With more than 12 unique dive sites, nearperfect visibility and frequent visits from a whale shark, Koh Haa is surfacing as one of the Andaman Sea’s most spectacular diving destinations.

It is only after the buzz of the boat engine is replaced by the lapping of the lagoon water along the sides of the dive boat that the majesty of Koh Haa finally starts to sink in. Eagles silently glide overhead, an occasional rustle can be heard from the nearby jungle-clad cliffs and schools of fish flit by in synchronicity close to the water’s surface. There is a sense of sheer remoteness. Arrive at the right time of day and there’s a high chance there will be no other boats around. And yet Koh Haa, which literally means ‘five islands’ in Thai, is little more than 60 minutes by boat from Kantiang Bay. Squint hard enough and the Bay’s famous Pimalai resort can just about be made out. People don’t come here to look back towards dry land, though. Visibility and diverse marine life is what primarily appeals to the handful of dive groups that venture to Koh Haa on an average day, according to Saffron Kiddy, founder and CEO of Scubafish Dive Centre. From the gently sloping reef and porcupine pufferfish who populate The Lagoon — and ideal jumping-off point for first-timers — through to the more advanced dive point The Chimney, which is home to a complex cave system and marine life such as sea snakes, lionfish, and nudibranchs, the 12 dive spots that surround the cluster of karst islands each offer very different attractions. Other underwater residents include rare ghost pipefish measuring only a few centimetres to octopuses of all sizes hiding amongst the rocks and crevices, while the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle can often be spotted swimming amongst the pristine coral.

“You can see so much in a single dive at Koh Haa,” says Saffron, who operates several PADI five-star dive centres on Koh Lanta, including one at Pimalai. “The excellent visibility across all the dive spots means divers, and snorkelers, can experience immaculate corals and an unusually wide variety of marine life, including some of the largest fish in the sea, which is a dream come true for divers and snorkelers.” The presence of whale sharks may have become less common in many of Thailand’s established dive spots in recent years due to human impact and commercial fishing, but for those lucky — or persistent — enough, an encounter with the world’s largest, and tragically endangered, fish is becoming more likely around Koh Haa, where sightings over the last few years have been a mostly monthly occurrence. Manta rays are also occasional visitors to the island’s stunning reefscapes throughout most of the high season, which runs from mid-October to mid-May. “Koh Haa offers fantastic visibility and great conditions throughout the season,” Saffron says, adding that even in high season, it’s often possible to share Koh Haa exclusively with the marine life if the boat arrives early enough. Regardless of the season, it’s always advised to book ahead for dive courses, excursions and of course accommodation. An obvious choice for travellers crafting a getaway around trips to Koh Haa is Pimalai. were competing this year for the prestigious HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup. The B.Grimm ~ BMW Thai Polo Open 2019 is the first of five RMPA International League tournaments in 2019. The RMPA International League is a 14-goal league that links five tournaments in Malaysia and Thailand. Teams are awarded points for every game

they play, plus bonus points for their order of merit finish at the five league tournaments. The RMPA International League celebrates its 15th year in 2019. The tournament also marked the beginning of the Royal Malaysian Polo Association International League 2019, which continues in Malaysia later this year. The proceeds of the event were given to HRH Princess Maha

Chakri Sirindhorn’s Chitralada Vocational School project. Organized by Dr. Harald Link, President of the South-east Asian Equestrian Federation, the charity aims to raise awareness of the sport in the nation. While the sport itself was introduced to Thailand in the late nineteenth century, polo was still more of a British pastime, especially to the British residents living in the north of Thailand. In 1890, Prince Devawongse Varopakarn, the

minister of foreign affairs, accepted the proposal of an Englishman, Franklin Hurst, to set up a racetrack and sports field in Bangkok. Hurst later rented a piece of land at Sra Pathum where occasional horse races, gymkhanas, cycle races and polo matches were held. This sporting area later became the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. In 1924, the Bangkok Riding Club leased land just off Wireless Road from the Crown Property Bureau. This became the Bangkok Riding and Polo Club, where

polo and other equestrian sports were played three times a week. After the Second World War, the sport was abandoned for years before it became recognized again. In addition to the aim of bringing awareness about polo, B.Grimm Group joined Dr. Siraya Chuenkamrai—founder and president of The Lampang Pony Welfare Foundation—to bring awareness to the support and welfare of horses in Lampang.

With a guest list including members of royalty, ambassadors and celebrities, the 10 day competition came to a heated event on the 19th to decide the winners and runner ups. The first playoff match between the teams 22BR 8.5 from Hong Kong and 5 Axus from China ended, with 22BR emerging in third place. The final between Malaysia’s La Familia and Thailand’s Thai Polo was an intense match, fought tooth and nail right to the end. Facundo Fernández Llorente scored first for Thai Polo but Mohamed Moiz tied the match for La Familia in the second chukka, making it 1-1 at half time. In the third chukka, Carlos Pando and Matías Vial both scored, meaning that the match was tied going into the fourth and final chukka. The nailbiting saga drew to a close with La Familia seemingly the winner until Facundo Fernández Llorente scored again, tying the match. Thai Polo seized their chance at glory when the young player was given a 60 yard penalty but ultimately, La Familia earned the coveted title when a spot penalty gave Matias Vial the chance to score—bringing the tournament to a satisfying end at last. The MVP was awarded to Mohamed Moiz.

“I am very happy to have won the Thai Polo Open,” says Vial. “We started the tournament well; we then lost by one against Thai Polo, so we wanted a rematch. We managed to win the final in extra chukka; if we had lost I would have died! I think we won because we carefully thought about how to play the match. They are a good team, so we went into the final focused and determined to win. We had already played against them, so we rewatched the video, we saw the errors we made, and we knew what our game plan was. Also, we were very well mounted, and that helped us go into every chukka in a strong position, which is fundamental in a final.” Part of the thrill came from the variety of charity kiosks, raffle games and for the younger ones, pony rides. The Wat Suthi Wararam marching band entertained the guests with delightful music before some of Thailand’s national horse riders dazzled with an impressive Show Jumping performance,. Fireworks lit up the skies at the end of the day— the perfect tribute to an exciting day. Spectators and players were invited to a relaxed barbeque party in the evening. Followed by the presentation of the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn cup to La Familia, several other prizes were also presented to the awaiting audience, such as “Best Dress” and “Best Hat” awarded to Violette Gauthier and Susolossa Jaojansakoon respectively.

he WTA Thailand Open 2019 happened 28 January to February 3 at Hua Hin’s True Arena sports complex. What a week it was and what a great addition to Hua Hin’s annual calendar of events. True Arena has hosted international tennis previously. Exhibition matches with stars like Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko, and Johanna Konta just last year, and megastars like Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal and

Novak Djokovic in previous years. The WTA Thailand Open 2019 was all about the upcoming stars – players in the top 100 rankings. Many coming directly from the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar, held in January every year. Stand-out in the field of players for the Hua Hin event were Garbiñe Muguruza from Spain with an international ranking of 18. Caroline Garcia from France (19), Hsieh Suwei from Taiwan (29), and Chinese

Tibetan Zheng Saisai (39). China’s Zhang Shuai (40) who partnered with Australian Sam Stosur won the 2019 Women’s Australian Open Doubles Championship was also on the card. Sabine Lisicki (former no. 12) who is coming back from injuries and Peng Shuai from China (former No 1 Double champion) were also expected to challenge for the end of week places. Luksika Khumkum, Thailand’s No. 1 female tennis player who advanced to the 3rd round of Australian Open this year will also be competing.

With 32 players in total, the Singles and Doubles competition was fought out over seven days with surprises throughout the week. Caroline Garcia and Sabine Lisicki were out early and Australian Open Doubles Champion Zhang Shuai having to pull out due to fatigue. Unfortunately, local Thai hope Luksika Khumkum who came up against Zhang Shuai in her first round match also exited. The tournament proved to be a testing event with some of the lesser ranked player shining through at the expense of the top seeds. In the singles, top seed Garbiñe Muguruza having not lost a set leading into the semi-finals was bundled out by 18-year-old Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska. Australian Ajla Tomljanovic also dispensed with the tournaments No 3 ranked player Zheng Saisai in the semi-finals. Poland’s Magda Linette made it through to the quarterfinals as did Switzerland’s Viktorijan Golubic, and Slovakia’s Tamara Zidansek.

After hard-fought quarterfinals, the Singles title came down to the youngest player, Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and what a tense and seesawing final it was. After 3 tight sets, 18-year-old Yastremska won her second-ever WTA Title, having won in Hong Kong in October 2018. The Single winner takes home USD 43,000 while the losing finalist receives $21,400. In the Doubles, Romanian pairing of Irina-Carmelia and Monica Niculescu took the title and with that prize money USD 12,330 each. Total prize money pool for this WTA Thailand Open was USD 250,000. For the last few years this international Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event has happened in Taipei, Taiwan, and until 2015, Pattaya Thailand was home for this event. Although these tournaments are definitely about the competition, cultural exchange and highlighting Thai life are also a significant element of the week’s activities.

Former world No 14, Peng Shuai and fellow Chinese players Duan Yingying and Wang Yafan took a Thai cooking class as part of the lead-up to the event. Renowned Amporn Chuengngam, who made her name in the TV programme “Iron Chef” taught the players, who all have a love for Thai food, how to make “Tom Yum Koong” (Spicy Prawn Soup). On the Sunday before the tournament’s first day of play, Garbiñe Muguruza and Peng Shuai also took some time away from Thailand Open duties to take part in a making merit ceremony with local Buddhist monks on Hua Hin’s main beach. One hundred local kids also benefited from having these women tennis stars in town with a Tennis Clinic held on the weekend before the tournament. With the clinic and the competition itself, organisers are hoping one of the many benefits of the event is to foster future Thai stars of the game and encouraging them to work hard, as their mentors have, to realise their tennis dreams. If the size of the crowds watching this world-class tennis over the week of play, and in particular the full house for the quarters and finals is a gauge, the WTA Thailand Open 2019 has been a great success, and perhaps, an indicator of continued success in the years to come. he Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organising body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women. Founded in 1973 by Billie Jean King with the vision of a better future for women’s tennis, the WTA today has more than 2,500 players representing nearly 100 nations competing for a record $146 million in prize money. When the Women's Tennis Association was founded, Billie Jean King was one of nine players that comprised the WTA, also referred to

as the Original 9. The other players were Rosie Casals, Nancy Richey, Kerry Melville, Peaches Bartkowicz, Kristy Pigeon, Judy Dalton, Valerie Ziegenfuss and Julie Heldman. In September 1970, they signed a $1 contract to join the Virginia Slims Circuit at the Houston Racquet Club in protest against the inequity in prize money awarded in the men’s and women’s games. Casals defeated Dalton in the final of the Houston event, which boasted a total prize purse of $7,500. Recognizing that traditional events had to raise their game or risk fading away, the WTA was created at a gathering of more than 60 players in a room at the

Gloucester Hotel in London, one week before Wimbledon. The WTA immediately began helping women tennis players gain recognition and equality. The increase in prize money offered to women tennis players produced a ripple effect across all women’s sports, with female athletes gaining well-deserved and longoverdue recognition, endorsement deals, and pay equity with their male counterparts. In 1971, Billie Jean King became the first female athlete to cross the six-figure mark in season earnings. In 1973, the US Open offered equal prize money to men and women for the first time. After Chris Evert was announced to be the WTA’s first official world no.1 in November 1975, she became the first female athlete to win over $1,000,000 in career earnings the following year. Over 250 women were playing professionally by 1980, when the WTA Tour consisted of 47 global events, offering women tennis players a total of $7.2 million in prize money. In 1986, Martina Navratilova passed $10 million in career earnings. Since 1976, Colgate had assumed sponsorship of tour events but in 1981, Avon and Toyota replaced

Colgate. Corel replaced them in 1995, the same year that the WTA Players Association merged with the Women’s Tennis Council to form the WTA Tour. Two years later, Martina Hingis earned $1 million in a season (the fastest player ever to do so) before becoming the youngest ever world no. 1 at the age of 17. In 2002, Venus and Serena Williams became back-to-back no.1 players—first Venus in February and Serena in July. In 2005, Sony Ericsson became the Tour’s worldwide title sponsor with a $88 million deal. In addition, Kim Clijsters earned $2.2 million for winning the US Open Series—the biggest pay cheque in both women’s

sports and in any official tennis event, men’s or women’s. The WTA celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2008 by opening its first Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing, China. In 2009, Serena Williams became the first woman to earn more than $6 million in a single season. In 2010, 40 years after the revolutionary Virginia Slims in September 1970, the prize money was increased to $85 million. The Original 9 reunited in Charleston in 2012 during the Family Circle Cup. Serena Williams continued her trailblazing career by pocketing her 21st major title in 2015.

The Original 9: Where Are They Now? Billie Jean King retired from professional tennis in 1990 but she has remained active as a coach, mentor and an activist. In 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama for her work as an activist, not a tennis player. "We honor what she calls 'off-the-courtstuff," President Obama said at the ceremony, via The Washington Post. "What she did to broaden the reach of the game, to change how women athletes and women everywhere view themselves, and to give everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation... a chance to compete both on the court and in life." King is an activist for LGBTQ rights, especially gay athletes and staunchly supports women’s rights as well. At 75 years, King spends her free time with her partner of 30 years, Illana Kloss and is seen at a tennis match every now and then. Rosie Casals, known as the “rebel” of the group is credited as the driving force behind many of the changes that occurred in women’s tennis. Although she has retired from professional tennis, she remains active in the sports’ world, having broadened her interests to golf. Now 71 years old, she owns her company Sportswoman, Inc. Nancy Richey is the only amateur winner of a Grand Slam women’s singles title since the start of the Open Era—and is likely to remain so. At the time, she received $27 as her prize money but now, at 76 years, she has accepted her rightful place in the national Tennis Hall of Fame. Judy Dalton at 81 years, lives in Melbourne and remains active in the world of sports as the president of the Fed Cup Foundation, an organisation established in 1974 to support women – either as players, coaches, officials or administrators.

Kerry Melville Reid now lives in South Carolina and is involved in the fly-fishing industry, quite disconnected from the sport that brought her so much success. After her playing career ended, Judy Heldman worked as a television color commentator and journalist with CBS, NBC, PBS, and HBO at the US Open and Wimbledon, 1973–78. Now 73 years old, she has published a memoir "Driven: A Daughter's Odyssey” chronicling the relationship between her and her mother Gladys. Jane “Peaches” Bartkowicz has been enshrined in the United States Tennis Association/Midwest Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. She was inducted into the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame on June 24, 2010. Kristy Pigeon never fully retired from playing tennis. She played on the women’s pro tour until the mid-1970s. In 1975, she relocated to Sun Valley and directed the John Gardiner Tennis Camps. She then founded the Elkhorn Tennis School and led it for 12 years. After selling the Elkhorn Tennis School, Pigeon founded Hailey’s Sagebrush Equine Training Center for the Handicapped (SETCH) to bring the healing power of horses to individuals in need. She served as SETCH’s executive director until her retirement in 2010. In 2017, Pigeon was honored by the US Tennis Association (USTA) Northern California division and inducted into the USTA Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame Today, at 68 years of age, Pigeon continues to work on wildlife restoration projects on her ranch along with golfing, biking, hunting and Nordic skiing. Valerie Ziegenfuss lives in San Diego. After her retreat from professional tennis she first worked as a tennis coach. Later she started a realtor business. Her daughter Allison Bradshaw also was a professional tennis player in the 1990's. What the Original 9 did in 1970, they did on their own — and with little or no support from the tennis establishment. They were threatened to be thrown out but still, they persevered — and today, every time the names Williams, Sharapova, Halep or any of today’s great champions are etched into the history of women’s tennis, history will recognize that they are not only worthy, but they are standing on the shoulders of nine women who played long ago; women who just wanted to play tennis and receive the recognition and financial gain they rightly deserved.

destination. Boasting a lineup of over 100 brands and more than 50 yachts on display, the Royal Phuket Marina opened to the public from 10-13 January. Held annually in Phuket on the shores of Phang Nga Bay, the Thailand Yacht Show is unlike any other boat show, with visitors encouraged to get out

on the water and experience the boating lifestyle in one of the world’s most beautiful yachting destinations. The organizers of the Thailand Yacht Show, Phuket Rendezvous and the Phuket Yacht Show have joined forces to provide a unique opportunity for nautical lifestyle seekers to meet some of the world’s leading yacht brands and brokers,

charter agencies, luxury property developers as well as leading names in hospitality and food and beverage industries. The show welcomed some of the biggest names in the industry, with Simpson Yacht Charter, Boat Lagoon Yachting and Lee Marine and yachting aficionados viewed the latest models from Beneteau, Ferretti, Jeanneau, Lagoon,

Monte Carlo Yachts, Yachts and Sanlorenzo.

Princess

Opening the proceedings, Mr Apichart Chirabandhu, Advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Sport, said: “The Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Ministry of Tourism & Sports are delighted to continue to support the Thailand

Yacht Show, to show our commitment to create new opportunities that will boost Phuket’s and Thailand’s economies. By growing the marine tourism industry, we will attract quality visitors and high-end leisure tourists with significant purchasing power.”

Indeed, this is the high season— with Phuket heaving with activity and visitors from all over, the show featured both on-land and in-water displays, exhibitions, demonstrations and panel discussions. During the day, luxurious charter yachts were displayed for viewings before they lit up for dazzling parties once the sun went down. Backed by the Royal Thai Government, the show invited a glittering array of major industry players, along with visitors from all over the world. Visitors enjoyed the latest watersport toys, gadgets and equipment with live displays at the

show's interactive Demonstration Platform in the marina and also joined in many of the activities along the Boardwalk and in the exhibition hall. Activities included sommelier wine tastings, elephant painting by Elephant Parade and photo workshops by Nikon, as well as a Classic Car display in Royal Phuket Marina's iconic Town Square. The first of the Christofle Yacht Style Awards 2019, which recognizes the best of the yachting industry, took place during the event, with the second part being staged during the Singapore Yacht Show and Rendezvous in April 2019.

The Governor of Phuket, Phakaphong Tavipatana, commented “With the energy and enthusiasm of the organizers who work on this project throughout the year, and the appetite of our government and our people to welcome foreign yacht owners to our beautiful cruising waters, amazing landscapes, and world-renowned hospitality, we are confident that the annual Thailand Yacht Show will continue to help develop an extremely valuable highend nautical tourism industry for Thailand.”

Andy Treadwell, CEO of show organizers, Verventia, continued: “This is a fantastic turnout of exhibitors, with almost 150 companies represented, justifying Thailand’s government’s continuing support for the show and the industry. Every major dealer in the region is present, with boats and yachts catering to every size, budget and taste. There is something for everyone at this year's show, from standup paddle boards to sportfishers, from small sailboats to super yachts, and everything in between.”

Bumrungrad Health Briefs Dry Eye Syndrome: Is It Pollution, Ageing or Something Else? Symptoms of dry eye syndrome are generally straightforward and include dry, red, itchy eyes. Unfortunately, the cause can be due to a complex variety of factors that either reduce tear production or prevent your eyes from remaining adequately hydrated. Dry eye syndrome has much to do with tears. Tears consist of water, salts, mucus, oils, and proteins. Tears lubricate and protect the eyes against dryness while keeping out dust and dirt. Dry eye syndrome can occur when a part of the tear production process stops functioning correctly, thereby reducing tear production. Dry eyes can also occur if tears dry too quickly, making them unable to properly lubricate the eyes.

Environmental Factors Air pollution — microscopic particles such as soot, dust, nitrates, and smoke — can cause dry eye syndrome. When these particles come in contact with eyes, they can cause small scratches and other irritations of the eye surface. Inadequate tear production prevents the eyes from flushing away the tiny particles, resulting in inflammation and itchiness. Weather can dry your eyes, too. Exposure to wind, bright sunshine or dry climates can cause tears to evaporate more quickly. Without protective tears, your eyes can become irritated.

Ageing The body’s ability to perform everyday functions slowly deteriorates with age. This includes a decreased tear secretion as well as lower quality tears lacking the proper balance of water, oil, salt, protein, and mucus. Both situations can cause dry eye syndrome.

Medical Conditions Allergies, including those caused by pollen and pet dander, can inflame the eye’s white exterior portion (conjunctiva) and cause dry, red, itchy eyes.

Skin conditions, including scleroderma and contact dermatitis, and immune disorders such as lupus, HIV, and rheumatoid arthritis, tend to increase one’s risk of dry eye syndrome. Vision correction, whether through temporary contact lenses or the permanent fix from corrective laser eye surgery, can lead to dry eyes. Symptoms tend to last for short periods and either clear up within weeks or months after eye surgery or can be prevented by reducing the length of time contact lenses are worn.

High Concentration Activities Activities requiring lengthy concentration often cause people to not blink often enough, which can cause dry eyes. This can affect heavy computer users and those who read a lot, watch TV for long periods, or engage in tasks requiring intense focus.

Eyelash Mites Dry eye syndrome can be caused by eyelash mites, usually harmless microscopic parasites that live on nearly everyone’s eyelashes. Having too many on your eyelashes can cause inflammation of the eyelids and symptoms of dry eyes. Eyelash mites are most prevalent in older people and among women who wear heavy eye makeup.

Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok is home to over 1,300 doctors and surgeons providing quality in-patient and out-patient care in state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and intensive care facilities.
