Hot Brands Cool Places talked to Tom Hainsworth, Managing Director of A.W. Hainsworth & Sons Ltd for an exclusive interview

INTERVIEW 4

Tom Hainsworth, 45, is Managing Director of A.W. Hainsworth & Sons Ltd, a Yorkshire familyowned textile manufacturer with a fascinating history that has been producing woollen textiles for more than 225 years. Last year, the company launched the luxury lifestyle brand Scarlet & Argent, a range of stunning blankets and throws stocked in Harrods, Liberty, John Lewis and stores around the world. How important is it to you to be part of a family business? I’m incredibly proud and privileged to represent the seventh generation of the company. The original Hainsworth was a frugal Yorkshireman who saved up enough money to buy a plot of land and then built his first factory. The company started in military textiles and made uniforms for the British soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo, the first khaki uniforms and today supplies the Queen’s Guards. We also hold a Royal Warrant for supplying interior fabrics to Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. Today, we produce around one million metres of cloth annually which goes to customers around the world. What are the important traditions that your company is trying to maintain? We very much see ourselves as a British company and our pride and passion go into everything we make. Traditional looms are still in use and many craftsmen have followed their parents into the business. The mill uses eight to ten tonnes of wool weekly and a natural spring underneath the site provides vital water supplies for production processes. The essence of the business is here. The fundamentals of producing cloth remain the same as they did in 1783 when the company launched, in terms of combing a fibre, producing a fabric, felting a product and finishing. History is important, but innovation is vital and we are always looking to the future. You have got to have the best products in the market. What was the inspiration behind Scarlet and Argent? The name Scarlet & Argent was inspired by Hainsworth’s iconic scarlet cloth, which is worn by the Queen’s Guards and as the Military’s ceremonial dress. Prince William even wore it on his wedding day. When Scarlet is coupled with Argent, a bright white silver, the colours of the English flag are created. What have been the highlights and challenges in growing the brand? We have had a fantastic response to our new retail brand Scarlet & Argent from consumers in the UK and internationally. The range of throws, blankets, cushions and other accessories including hot water bottles are all lovingly made in our Yorkshire mill. Only the finest natural materials are used and every piece is impeccably finished. It is this attention to detail that gives Scarlet & Argent its exceptional quality, indulgent textures and a special place in any home. We have the biggest looms which means we can make the largest blankets. For instance, our range of 100 per cent Lambswool Chamber Blankets also come in King Size making them perfect for the whole family to snuggle up under. What are your hopes for the group in the future? I think in the last five years people have really begun to appreciate wool and why it is such a fantastic fibre. There is growing interest in productsthat can be made from it. With out heritage and product development, I’d like to see Hainsworth continue to be England’s premier textile woollen mill and to be here in another 225 years. What makes a perfect weekend for you? I had one of my perfect weekends last week – trekking up the snow-capped Munros in Scotland for two days with my brother and a group of pals. The scenery is stunning up there and it’s a great place to switch off and rejuvenate. http://www.scarletandargent.co.uk 5

INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places talked to Fiona Rose, Founder of Arts and Crafts Living for an exclusive interview What inspired you to set up Arts and Crafts Living? Passion. As a teenager I discovered, and loved, the designs of William Morris and later, whilst living in America, I fell in love with the work of Gustav Stickley a designer and furniture maker at the turn of the 19th century. I greatly admired the clean lines, simple elegance and fine craftsmanship that the Arts & Crafts era (circa 1860 – 1930) style represented. I also respected, not just the aesthetics of the Movement but also the guiding principles which seem particularly poignant 100 plus years later: live simply, keep connected to nature, take joy and pride in work, maintain integrity and create well designed objects that are useful and beautiful. Since returning to England, I dreamt of starting a business selling home interiors inspired by the style of the British and American Arts and Crafts era that I so love. Thus, Arts and Crafts Living was born. You have a fascinating background, how has it helped in your business? Thank you. I worked for many years in the health care field, specifically the health of women and children, working for various charities and later for our world class National Health Service. Working for a charity is most often a labour of love – you care passionately about the nature of the actual work, or cause, and are deeply committed to the charity, often doing a variety of roles as there are simply not the resources to stick with a narrow job description. It’s the same with my business – I love what I do, incorporating the designs of the great Arts & Crafts era designers into items for the 21st century home. When starting a small business you also have to be prepared to have a go at doing everything for yourself, to assume many roles, this can be very liberating. What advice would you have for someone looking to combine traditional and modern design? I think the most important consideration is to go with pieces you love, be they antique or modern. I think in interior design the unexpected can be very special and charming – a sleek contemporary kitchen with vintage cookware, the Living Room in an Elizabethan house filled with Art Deco furniture. Do you have a favourite piece in your collection? I truly love all our products – my rule when choosing an item for our collection is that I’d want to have it in my own home. It also has to be useful and beautiful. At the moment, my favourite piece is the William Morris Larkspur Tapestry Bin (see photo, middle bin) – a waste bin that’s an object of beauty! What are your hopes for your business in 2014? To continue to grow and to explore the idea of manufacturing our own range of products inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement. What makes a perfect Christmas for you? Spending time with family and friends most dear to me. Watching my 10 year old son’s face light up with delight when he opens the gift he really wanted. Christmas is also a time to reflect on how lucky we are to have people who care about us, a beautiful home and a purpose and joy in life. It’s a time to give something back in terms of a good deed, service to others or a gift to someone less fortunate. Last year we made up a gift box for a soldier serving overseas, this year we’re going to take part in The Giving Tree in Cambridge where you buy a gift for an underprivileged child. http://www.artsandcraftsliving.co.uk/

Hot Brands Cool Places talked to Richard Taylor, Company Director, Dusk Trading Ltd for an exclusive interview

INTERVIEW

Why did you start running your own business? I have always been a very practical person and I worked for many years as an electrician which was very physically demanding. Unfortunately I injured my back which led to me having six back operations, which meant I could no longer carry on with daily physical work, but naturally needed to carry on paying the mortgage! Faced with this life changing situation I decided that I wanted to work for myself. Having worked with lighting for many years as an electrician I knew that I had a very good understanding of the technical side as well of the different effects that could be created. I researched the internet and discovered that the market was pretty saturated with lighting companies, but noted that either the websites did not display good quality images and or the product information was very lacking. Along with these two points I discovered that when I contacted some of the companies to find out more information about a fitting or giving a simple lighting problem that no person was able to give me an informative answer. Taking this on board I started to look for good quality lighting that I could sell and be able to give good quality advice. How are you growing the brand? Since launching my first website www.dusklights.co.uk in September 2009 with 80 lights I have been able to grow this site which now had over 1500 products in it. I am still growing the site on a daily basis to be able to offer a comprehensive range to suit varied tastes and situations. In 2012 I launched www.duskliving.co.uk which covers beautiful products from Hedgehog houses to Bread bins. The range that I have on this site sits well with the lighting as once people have finished doing their lighting, it is nice to treat themselves to something new to finish the look. With two websites now running I changed the company name to Dusk Trading Ltd and am looking to expand the Dusk brand! Time permitting I will hopefully be rolling out a new site in the very near future which will focus just on LED lighting (www.dusk-led.co.uk) as this is a growing market especially as we see our energy costs continuing to grow above the rate of inflation. Having LED lighting can save you significant money on your lighting running costs. What advice would you give to people about creating the ideal lighting environment? The best advice I can give is to consider your lighting at the very beginning of any project no matter how big or small. To have a good idea of what you want will help the electrician when they do the first fix (putting in the wires). Secondly is to think about breaking up the circuit, by this I mean instead of all of the lights running off one light switch split the lighting into groups which run off different switches. This will enable you to create different levels of light within the room for different times of day and situations. There is a time when you want all the lights on when doing a certain task and then being able to scale it all back to a subdued mood light, this applies to all rooms within your property. What are your hopes for the future of your company? My hopes for the future of the company is to slowly grow the websites with a more comprehensive range of products. I will only sell products that I know and trust are of excellent quality. I am building a strong team of staff who have the same values as me who take pride in the products we sell along with great customer focus. I am also building a show room to display a comprehensive range of lighting which will be open by the end of 2013. Our business has been in the virtual world of the world wide web and demand locally has led to the showroom being built. What makes a perfect weekend for you? A perfect weekend is spent with my wife and daughter and getting away from computers and telephones. I am learning to sail and find this the perfect relaxation, being out in the fresh air in all elements. www.dusklights.co.uk

INTERVIEW

Hot Brands Cool Places talked to Laura and Euan Kelway-Bamber, Founders of The Headboard Workshop Ltd for an exclusive interview What inspired you to set up The Headboard Workshop Ltd.? Thirty years ago we ran a successful small hobby business manufacturing headboards from the garage of our army quarter in London. Everything was made to order in customers own material and every order was totally bespoke. We never needed to advertise and we never ran out of work. Euan’s career then took a different turn and I was preoccupied bringing up our three children, but I think we always knew that our headboard venture had never really closed. How have you maintained traditional skills in your business? We have Val and we have Jeff our head machinist and head upholsterer. Val is over 70 and there is nothing she has not, nor cannot sew. Jeff is over 65 and like Val there is nothing that phases him. At the other end of the scale we have Ryan aged 17, bubbling with enthusiasm and with a thirst to learn. By creating an informal and fun atmosphere within the company, the skills of the mature easily filter down to novices, and create a fabulously vibrant environment. What advice would you have for someone looking to update their bedroom? Create a haven of calm, a sanctuary, and most importantly make it yours. Everyone’s idea of a perfect bedroom is different and therefore decorating a bedroom is obviously a matter of personal taste but here are a few golden rules: Start with your headboard - the rest will follow. Choose restful colours and buy yourself some smart new bed linen. Consider your space and try to avoid overcrowding the room. Clever use of mirrors creates the illusion of space. What is your favourite headboard design? We just love the extended winged Iona. Big, bold and buttoned it is a real statement piece and looks gorgeous in all of our fabrics. Ours is made up in Pure new wool, there is not a finer fabric in our collection. What are your hopes for your business in 2014? We want to become the company that everyone wants to buy from and everyone wants to work for. We are hugely excited about 2014, we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate as we have such a wonderful team of people. Next year some of them will be doing things they never dreamt they could do, nothing is more exciting than helping them fulfill that dream. What makes a perfect Christmas for you? Snow, and lots of it (provided of course that our family have arrived and we’ve stocked up cellar and larder before the first flakes fall!) http://www.theheadboardworkshop.co.uk/
