Medical & Health Local Anesthesia & Nitrous Oxide Administration Certificate Program Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervision of a dentist, to administer intraoral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxide analgesia to a patient who is 18 years of age or older. Hostos Community Collegeâ€™s Department of Dental Hygiene is offering a course for certification in Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. In compliance with recent law in New York, this course will facilitate the New York State licensed dental hygienistâ€™s application for a Restricted Certificate in Local Infiltration Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. The program will be comprised of lectures (30 hours) and hands-on clinical application (15 hours) under faculty supervision. Upon successful completion of this course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for certification through the New York State Education Department. Participants who do not meet clinical competency for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide procedures will not be permitted to challenge the written certification exam and will be required to retake the entire course at their own expense. Students will be provided with a flash drive of all Power Point and written presentations. This course will be taught by Dr. James King. Prerequisites: 1. Proof of current CPR/AED Certification for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers 2. Proof of New York Dental Hygiene Licensure 3. Proof of current professional liability insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000) Participants will serve as patients for each other during the clinical portion of the course. If you are unwilling or unable to be a patient, please do not register for this course. (Please be advised that if you are pregnant or have uncontrollable high blood pressure, you will be precluded from participating in this course.) All students are required to take and record blood pressure and follow infection control standards. Attendance is mandatory at all classes (didactic and clinical). No refunds will be issued after the start of the program.
