BULL in the

by Crystal Lyons

Chicken House

W

here’s the camera when you need one? I heard the chickens going apesnerd and ran out to see what was the matter. The longhorn bull was inside the chicken house, calmly eating hay out of the nests and licking up the laying pellets out of the hanging feeder, while the chickens were bouncing off the walls. It was a Kodak moment. While crazed chickens where flying over his back, he quietly turned his head sideways so he could fit his horns

through the door and come back out. I am sure that egg production will be down for a day or so. How did it happen? Well, a small gate was left open----that is all it took to give me a laugh and the chickens something to cackle about for a few hours. Did you know that not every open door is to be walked through? I’ve heard people say, “I knew it must be God because it just opened up for me”! Heck, I’ve said those words myself! Some of them

“open doors” that I walked through, thinking they were “God” left a memory that isn’t near as funny to me as the bull in the chicken house----although come to think of it-----it did give folks something to cackle about for awhile. God wants us to be led by His Spirit, that still, quiet sounding voice down on the inside of us that we can brush off as “nothing” if we don’t watch it, NOT some “open door”. Some open

“not every open door is to be walked through” doors are God! But the point is---we are not to be led by them. I have walked through some of those open doors before, and been just as out of my element and in the wrong place as that bull was in the chicken house. Problem was----it took me a lot longer to get back out! Although I gotta say, I have learned some valuable lessons because of it. One of which is: “Even though a bull eats all the laying pellets----he still won’t lay eggs”. The Importance of Hoof Care

Shoeing for Traction on Hard Slick Surfaces

T

he fall season brings on those wagon train rides all over the south. Riders and pulling horses and mules will be walking on pavement. Many are required to have borium or Drill Tech on the bottom of the shoes to provide traction on hard slick surfaces to prevent slipping and sliding. The shoe must be fit to the hoof before welding the drill tech on using the forge. This is where fitting the shoe to the hoof comes into play in a very important way. If your farrier or you insist on purchasing shoes with drill tech already applied and expect the farrier to nail the shoe on without shaping the shoe correctly, then you asking for a poor shoeing job and rasping off hoof wall to fit a shoe that may not even be the right size! Yes, there are shoes sold this way by certain retailers but it does not make it correct. It takes more time and money to do it correctly. And….if your horse is not going to stand quietly…the job gets harder. Owners, work with your horses legs and hooves more often and you will achieve a more harmonious outcome. Drill Tech is a gritty product used on drill bits out in the oil fields. Pieces are applied by heat using a propane or coal forge or with a torch AFTER the shoe is

shaped to fit the hoof. Then cooled off and nailed on. It melts and is applied in three spots, one at the toe and one on each heel Side view showing the shoe never touches the ground; this shoe was removed after 6 weeks of riding. This shoe also has pulled clips to prevent the shoe from sliding back from the toe when pulling up and down hilly terrain. A farrier who can talk out the problem areas with you is the best teacher you can find when it comes to healthy hooves in trimming, nutrition, shoeing, etc. More information for owners is in our DVD, “The Grammar School of Trimming and Shoeing Horses” we offer our customers at the Farriers’ National Research Center and Horseshoeing School and clinics for owners and horsemanship.

One-Leg-Hobble

I’m sure that most horse enthusiasts are familiar with the idea of hobbling a horse around their two front feet. This is in essence like putting handcuffs on a horse restraining their ability to move freely and/or run away. I recently had a couple horses come in for training that I thought could benefit from a variation of this hobbling procedure. This is known as the one-leg-hobble. I’ll admit that I did it for selfish reasons. These were big stout horses that came from a ranch with only minimal handling. They were going to need some front shoes and their feet had not been picked up very much. I knew this procedure would not only make my shoeing job easier, but also help these horses during the saddling process. Below is the how and why of the one-leg-hobble. One of the best gifts you can give your horse is a thorough understanding and Positioning the one-leg-hobble high-up on the horses compliance to restraint. It is a horse’s natural forearm. Note that I’m standing off to the side. instinct to struggle and fight when they feel like they’re being caught, trapped, or restrained. Out in the wild, this might save their life when confronted with a predator or another dangerous situation. However, for our domestic horses, around the barnyard, learning to yield to pressure would be a much wiser choice and probably keep them much safer. For example, if your horse has the ability to think through the process and yield to pressure, if they were to get their foot caught in the fence, could pay big dividends for both the horse and owner. Horses will generally struggle to a certain degree as they’re trying to figure out this new form of restraint. A one-leg-hobble is a rope or strap that goes around the horse’s ankle and forearm causing the horse to balance and stand up on three legs. The hobble material should be smooth, soft, nonabrasive, and strong enough not to break. I find that using a regular set of leather hobbles works about as good as anything. I want to introduce this technique to a horse in a confined area such as a round pen with soft ground. At the beginning I will also keep a halter and lead rope on my horse. Horses can soon learn to stand compliantly It is beneficial for a horse to have with the one-leg-hobble in place. at least an elementary understanding of picking up their front feet before startAt this point, it is important to stay to ing this process. When applying the one-legthe side of your horse at all times. They can hobble, it is helpful to take one wrap around begin to hop on one leg or even rear. Standing the ankle before securing the strap around the directly in front of your horse places you right forearm. This will aid in keeping the hobble in in the line of fire and in a dangerous position. place. Now with the horse bending his leg at It is not unusual for them to struggle and hop the knee, pull the bottom portion of the horse’s around quite a bit as they try to figure out how leg up snug to the forearm, then secure the to get comfortable. This is where your horse hobble as high up on the leg as possible.

With Richard Winters Horsemanship

having a basic understanding of respecting your space and yielding away can be helpful. Then you will be better equipped to keep your horse from coming into your space as they try to figure out how to stand quietly on three legs. I will let my horse move around and work at this until I can see a sign of him wanting to stand quietly on three legs. Once my horse has stopped struggling and is standing quietly, I will rub and pet him for a moment and then take the hobble off. Now I will repeat the same process with the opposite front foot. As with all training, everything needs to be taught equally on both sides. Standing on three legs is somewhat fatiguing for a horse, especially if most of the time was spent struggling and hopping around on one front leg. That’s why it is important to release the leg and let the horse stand on all four feet after they have demonstrated that they are yielding to the pressure rather than resisting against it. You can repeat this several times over a period of a few days. If done correctly, you will find that your horse struggles less and less and becomes more compliant and comfortable standing on three legs. As their understanding increases, they will be able to stand quietly on three legs for longer periods of time. Initially, as the horse attempts to free himself from the one-leg-hobble the hobble might have a tendency to slip off the forearm down towards the horse’s knee. This can cause the hobble to come off completely. This would be counterproductive. Now the horse begins to learn that if he struggles enough he can free himself from the hobble. If you see the hobble slipping down towards the horses knee it will be necessary to occasionally pull the hobble back up to the top of the forearm to keep it in place. As I mentioned earlier, I used this technique on a couple horses recently for selfish reasons. Once these horses have a good understanding of this procedure they will be more comfortable and compliant with holding up their front foot for extended periods of time while being shod. The one-leg-hobble is just one more tool that we can use to help our horses become well-rounded citizens. When done correctly, there is nothing cruel or abusive about the process. It is actually a gift that you can give your horse to help him be more successful in this human world in which we have asked him to assimilate. (We have 2 TV shows that demonstrate hobbling techniques. Call Cheryl at 805-2766101 to order your disc today for only $12.99.)

The

Greatest Influence W

ho has the greatest influence on us? It’s normally the people we hang out with, the people we are around the most. That’s why we need to guard ourselves of who our friends are. But, since we usually talk about horses here, who has the greatest influence on your horse. Well, I would hope I could say you, the owner, and the way it should be. But clearly, it is the person who spends the most time with the horse. In which case I would hope it was the owner. Lots of times it is the trainer. If you ever sent your horse to a trainer and he came back the way you wanted and in a week or so he was back acting like he was before you sent him off….there is a reason for that. As in most cases, as bad as it sounds, the problem lies with the owner. You see, the horse is only doing what works for him. And the thing is, what is working for the horse is not working for you. That’s the truth. You see, it’s like this. If you lack training skills and understanding your horse this is probably going to happen. It’s our fault for not knowing. And like anything else, the more you start to understand, the more knowledge you get, the better you will be. Here’s a little secret you may need to know. Let’s say you are out riding one day

and you ask your horse to turn right but he turned left instead. Is that the right answer? Heck no! And if you let him go that way when it’s wasn’t the answer you were looking for then to him that was exactly what he was supposed to do. That’s how they think.. We are teaching the horse the wrong answer.. Our fault. So, if your horse turns left when you asked for right you continue asking him to turn right until he does. DoNot stop asking, but don’t be abrupt either. Getting in a struggle with your horse is not a good thing. When he does do the right thing, stop asking. Allow him to stand and think for a while. The reason is, leaving him alone for a bit allows him to process what just happened. He gets left alone after he does a certain thing. Horses don’t try to do the wrong thing. Oftentimes it’s human intervention that causes the horse to do so. Lots of times our horse problems are manmade, not horse made. Back to the trainers; there are a lot of good trainers out there. But, as I have stated before, if you send your horse to the trainer, he/she will have the most influence on the horse. The horse will learn from the trainer’s ques and when you get your horse back you will be in the same place you were when you sent your horse off to boarding school.

My suggestion, and this is how I teach, is for you to take lessons from your trainer. Let the trainer teach you to teach your horse. There aren’t a lot of trainers that will do that but I feel it is the best place to begin, for you and your horse. That way, it is you having the best influence on your horse as you are guided through the process. All it takes is a little more effort and a little more time but is well worth it. You will end up with the greatest bond and relationship between you and your horse. Another way, enroll in a clinic or skills learning school that is on your particular level and that is going to be teaching particulars you need, to help you and your horse.
