The 2010-11 season will mark Dominique Bukasa’s third year on Sacramento State’s coaching staff after spending two years as an assistant at Fresno City College (2006-08). His duties with the Hornets include recruiting, working with the post players and scheduling. In addition, he is the team's travel coordinator and assists with scouting and academic development. Bukasa’s first season with the Hornets coincided with head coach Brian Katz’s first year, and the coaching staff took over the program almost from scratch, beginning a major rebuilding project that saw the 2008-09 squad open the year with 12 new players and only four returners. The fruits of Bukasa and the coaching staff’s hard work began to show last season when the team secured nine victories, more wins than the previous two years combined. Included in the team’s 9-21 record were seven losses that came by six points or less. The 2009-10 squad also put an end to three dubious streaks that began prior to the current coaching staff’s tenure. The Hornets’ win at Oregon State on Nov. 21, 2009, ended a 39-game road losing streak which dated back to the 2006-07 season. In addition, the victory over the Beavers was the first for the Hornets against a Pacific-10 Conference opponent since Dec. 17, 1953. After the Oregon State win, Sacramento State would later add road victories over UC Davis and Idaho State. The win over Idaho State snapped a 27-game Big Sky road losing streak. Bukasa, who has nine years of coaching experience, worked on a Fresno City College coaching staff that produced a 2007 California Community College State Tournament championship, back-to-back Central Valley Conference titles and a 62-16 combined record. Prior to Fresno City, he spent one season as an assistant at the College of Siskiyous (2005-06) where he helped coach the Eagles to a No. 1 ranking in the state for nine consecutive weeks. That marked the first time in school history that College of Siskiyous had received a top ranking in the state. Bukasa was also an assistant at Petaluma’s Casa Grande High School, where he helped guide the team to a 25-4 overall record and the 2003 league championship. After playing three years at Sonoma State (1997-00), where he was part of a nationally-ranked team that set the school record for victories (20 in 1998-99), Bukasa had a highly successful career overseas. He played four years of professional basketball in Belgium (2000-01, 2002-03) and France (2001-02, 2003-04), where he was a four-time all-league selection, and was part of a 2nd Division Belgium national championship winning team. During his time overseas, he also coached under-16 and under-12 club teams from 2000-04. Bukasa finished the 2001-02 season in France, came back to the United States to be an assistant at Casa Grande for the 2002-03 high school season, and went back overseas to finish his professional career. From 2001-07, he was involved with the 1% Club, a summer program that trains high school and collegiate basketball players in the Santa Rosa area. Ten players he helped train with the 1% Club went on to sign Div. I scholarships, including Angelo Tsagarakis (Oregon State) and Josh Akognon (Cal State Fullerton). Bukasa graduated from Sonoma State in 1999 with a degree in history, and a minor in political science. He graduated in July of 2008 with a master’s degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific.
