Our History: Value, Growth, Stability

onest Abe Log Homes has seen a tremendous amount of change in over three decades of helping thousands of log home owners realize their dream. But, as the old adage goes, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” What’s changed? Improved products, better construction techniques and the increased use of technology, among other things – all to provide the best home and the best building experience possible. What hasn’t changed during that time? The commitment to a quality product, produced by quality people, with an emphasis on value. Owner and founder Doug Smith started the company in 1979 as an offshoot to his sawmill operation in Moss, an unincorporated village in northeastern Middle Tennessee near Dale Hollow Lake. Smith, a second-generation sawmiller, had several goals in mind: make a quality product, provide jobs for the county, use excess material generated by his sawmill and, last but not least, maintain a healthy company. To say those goals have been met would be a vast understatement. Through the ups and down of the economy, good times and bad, Honest Abe has remained a fixture in the local economy and in the log home industry and remains upbeat about the future, both immediate and long-term. Honest Abe continues to be one of the most highly-regarded companies in the log home industry, a position it has occupied for most of its three decades, staying in the upper echelon amidst a great deal of industry shake-up. Over the years the company has also been a significant part of one of the largest collective employers in its home of Clay County, providing dozens of jobs and hundreds more in Tennessee and across the U.S. through other direct sales locations and dealers. The past has been bright and company officials feel the future is bright. Honest Abe offers dozens of log home floor plans, but custom design has always been the lion’s share of what we do. Our very experienced design team can do about everything imaginable: start from scratch, work from your own plan, modify one of our existing plans and everything in between. We’ve started with little more than a sketch on a napkin more than once. Whatever your needs, we can bring your dreams to life! This modified Westport model is a perfect example. A family came to us, and fell in love with the Westport, but they needed some extra space for their growing family, including an attached garage at one end and a master bed and bath on the other. They asked: “Can you do this?”

10 Steps to Owning your Log Home

Step 1: Research Research, Research

Congratulations! If you’re reading this, you’ve already started the process of building the log or timber home you’ve always wanted. Researching log homes can be a fun process, and there are plenty of educational outlets available. Websites, magazines, home shows and local events are all available and dedicated to log, timber frame and rustic homes. Be sure to take notes! There’s more than one way to build a log home, so you’ll be exposed to a variety of information. Keep a binder where you can store magazine clippings of articles and pictures, or gather information directly from the Internet. Once you’ve identified a few companies to focus on, start digging into the details. Talk with their staff, visit their manufacturing headquarters (so you can see the product first-hand) and attend their seminars. This is a great way to identify which company will best suit your plans and vision for your new home.

Step 2: Purchase Land Early

Purchasing your land and building equity into it is more important than ever because of lending practices. However, don’t rush into the choice. It may seem like the perfect property for you, but is it suitable for building the home you want? Zoning and environmental restrictions are not always obvious, so make sure there are no underlying issues. Other issues that may not be immediately obvious could be access to utilities and water, restrictive community covenants and land percolation suitable for a septic system. Finding that perfect piece of land is exciting and will motivate you to continue the process. Having as much of it paid for before applying for a new home loan will certainly be beneficial.

Step 3: Set Goals & Establish a Time Line

It’s important to have a plan, especially when building a new home. Some people build within a year of starting the process, while others may take several years. In either case, setting goals and establishing a time line to build will help you reach important milestones for paying off the land you’ve purchased in time to build or saving for a down-payment on the project.

Step 4: Create a Budget & Pre-qualify

With a time line in place, it’s time to set an overall budget. What can you afford? Take the first step with a lender and pre-qualify for the loan. It can be very educational and allow you to plan realistically and responsibly. A variety of lenders are available and will lend to qualified people building log and timber homes. If you need help finding a good fit, talk to one of the manufacturers (like Honest Abe) on the short list from your research.

Step 5: Start Preliminary Design & Wish List

Now it’s time for the real fun to begin! For many, this journey of building a log or timber home started years ago. During that time, a whole slew of ideas and expectations have floated across your mind. Now is the time to get those on paper. Separate the “must-haves” from the amenities you would include if the budget allows. Start playing with design ideas, and remember that most major manufacturers, including Honest Abe, will design a custom home for you with no added expense over a standard model. Step 6: Order Blueprints, Apply for Loan

It’s now time to decide on a floor plan and manufacturer for your home. The design process will begin, and you’ll be able to start the loan process too. Working with the manufacturer to get your plans just the way you want them will be an exciting process!

Step 7: Get Construction Estimates & Interview Builders

With your new home plans in hand, it’s time to start getting estimates. This will help confirm that your plans meet your proposed budget and also help determine your total loan amount. This is the perfect opportunity to interview sub-contractors and general contractors alike. Ask for references on their work, and follow up before making a choice. If your manufacturer offers building services, make sure the contract you sign is with the manufacturer and not the builder. Some companies will have a program to put you in touch with sub-contractors they have experience with, like Honest Abe’s HELP Build Program.

Step 9: Finalize Loan

You have the hard numbers, the G.C. is ready and the manufacturer you have picked is awaiting the deposit to create your new custom log home. Since applying for the loan in Step 6, you have been in frequent contact with your lender, which is key, because the time this process can take varies. It’s time to sign on the dotted line!

Step 10: Order Package & Place Deposit

A deposit is required to manufacture your custom home, with the balance due when delivered. It’s an exciting time! It’s been a long road, but one with great rewards at the end, and you are finally nearing it. In a matter of weeks, construction will likely begin. Another “Congratulations” is in order.

Step 8: Pick a General Contractor

Based on your experiences through gathering the estimates and talking with contractors, choose a General Contractor to direct the project. Many banks now require a licensed G.C. to manage the construction, but in some cases you may be able to serve in that capacity. Either way, there are various benefits and responsibilities.

On the surface, you would think all log home companies manufacture home packages in their own facilities. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Honest Abe Log Homes is a true manufacturer of log home packages. For over 35 years, we’ve been milling our own logs, crafting each and every custom log home package at our National Headquarters in Moss, Tennessee. In those three decades, we’ve learned that preparation is key and simply cannot be rushed. We begin by selecting only the highest quality Eastern White Pine. To minimize movement, shrinkage and settling in the timbers over time, we combine natural air-drying and kilndrying measures in the manufacturing of every Honest Abe timber. The drying process produces a more stable log and tighter joints for the construction of your log home. Because we don’t believe in rushing this process, Honest Abe averages a nine-month inventory of timbers, something many of our competitors can’t say. This ensures our customers that the logs for their home have already been purchased and are being prepared, sometimes many months before they even become our client. We’re not an average sawmill. Honest Abe uses 3-D modeling and computer-driven equipment overseen by a team of dedicated craftsmen. Every log that goes into your home is cut to exact specifications for a perfect fit, a critical step when it comes to windows, doors and corner notches. Our manufacturing staff members are certified graders under nationallyrecognized Timber Products Inspection (TPI) regulations. In addition to monthly industry evaluations from TPI, we follow our own quality-control process every day to produce the best possible logs for your home. Finally, our craftsmen apply these same principles to the packaging phase, where pre-cut logs are numbered, wrapped and neatly bundled for protection during the delivery. You can know and trust that literally every piece of your log home that comes from our facility has been carefully produced, graded and packaged.

Our GREEN Thumb

Designing, manufacturing and building “green” is not a new concept. Through partnerships with our wood-related sister companies, by-products from each are traded to maximize usability, ensuring little or no waste. Honest Abe uses hardwood sawdust rather than costly natural gas or electricity to produce the heat needed for the kiln-drying process. EPA-regulated and monitored equipment known as “scrubbers” make sure air quality impact is miminal. Pine shavings and chips created through the milling process at Honest Abe are sold for use in animal beddings and soil additives. We also work with customers individually to incorporate green products and practices and to meet and exceed energy code requirements.

By kiln-drying our logs, we not only remove moisture trapped inside but also destroy insects or their larvae in the “green” logs. We use large, high-temperature kilns (seen here) to dry hundreds of logs at a time. Once stacked inside the kiln, the timbers remain there for three to five weeks. During this time, the temperature inside the kiln is slowly raised to around 180 degrees as a computer-controlled system manages a complex series of fans and the heat generated to dry the logs. The goal of this thorough drying process is to reach a moisture-content level that’s best for the climate at the majority of our building sites. The dry logs are also better prepared to receive the stains and preservatives you may choose to apply. Constructing a kiln-dried log home typically is less labor intensive than building a non-kiln-dried counterpart, with log weight greatly reduced through the process. Each of the timbers is always graded and stamped to meet national codes.

Milled-D Log (8”x8” & 6”x8”)*

Our Milled-D log is planed smooth on all sides for a beautiful finish. This log system also features an inserted corner notch and a milled drip edge. These time-tested methods of joinery ensure a air-tight seal that keeps the outside elements outside. The logs are locked together with a large, single tongue-and-groove. A foam gasket and sealer are applied between each course before fastening with screws.

Interlocking Round Log (8”x8”)

The name of this log system speaks to its strength and superior design. The interlocking corners in our milled round 8”x8” log are unique to Honest Abe Log Homes and through the years have performed beyond expectations. Created with unsurpassed strength and “sealability” in mind. The logs are fitted together with a large, single tongueand-groove, while a foam gasket and sealer are applied between each course before the logs are fastened together with screws.

Genesis Log (6”x12” & 8”x12”)*

The Genesis log provides a massive log while avoiding the use of interior chinking (that white stuff between some logs). The exterior is purposely planned with a rough textured surface, and also provides a groove for optional exterior chinking. The interior surface of the log system is finished smooth. A dovetail corner system completes the Appalachian look and feel of this system, and is beautiful when our optional hand-hewing is applied. The logs are locked together with a large, single tongue-and-groove while a foam gasket and sealer are applied between each course before fastening with screws.

Dovetail D-Log (6”x12” & 8”x12”)*

Two classic and highly sought after log styles are combined to present our Dovetail D-Logs. This system combines large D-shaped logs with the same Appalachian-style dovetail corner found on our tradition log systems. The rounded exterior contour and flat interior surface lend a massive appearance to this system. As with our similar styles, the use of a foam gasket and sealer ensures a weather-tight fit when fastened together with screws.

Original Chinked Log (6”x10”)

Nothing offers the true feeling of rustic log home living better than our Original Chinked log system. This log features a rough-textured exterior surface, a smooth interior and the traditional look of the chinked log homes of our ancestors. This log system is constructed with a solid spline between each log course, and chinking material is applied on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Classic dovetail corners complement the look and ensure a tight fit. This log may also be hand-hewn to complete the authentic Appalachian look. The logs are sealed with a large, single tongue-and-groove and fastened together with screws.

Big Sky Log (10” Milled Round)*

The Big Sky Log system represents the rustic appeal of the West. Grand lodges and ranches have been constructed using these very materials since “the west was won.” Honest Abe utilizes these massive 10” round logs for the walls, roof purlins, ceiling beam rafters and support posts. The time-tested Swedish Cope corner system provides an extremely tight fit. This system is available for all of our standard models and any custom home as well. 24

Quality & Species of Wood Eastern White Pine Use: Log Systems, Posts, Rafters, 1”x 6” T&G & Interior Trim

Eastern White Pine has long been our species of choice for manufacturing quality log home systems. In the early years of Honest Abe other species were used such as Southern Yellow Pine, Poplar, Western Red Cedar and others. We found that none were as well-suited for log homes as Eastern White Pine. It’s with great experience and a long record of superb performance that we have chosen this species. It maintains its stability through the kiln drying process, and it is easy to work with during the construction of a home. Each log used in the construction of a home meets strict “Wall Log 40” grading standards and is stamped with verification. The species is quick growing, affordable and naturally renewable, so it is the perfect “green” choice.

Douglas Fir

Use: Timber Frame System, Ceiling Beams, Girders & Rafters

Strength, rigidity and a beautiful contrasting appearance to our logs have set Douglas Fir apart from other species Honest Abe might have chosen. Honest Abe has found that by using a high-grade #1 & Better Doug Fir for our rafters, ceiling beams and girders, we have increased the value of our product and also boosted the quality. The species has proven to be much easier to build with, reducing job-site waste dramatically. It is also used in our Timber Frame system, creating the structural frame-work for the entire home.

Engelman Spruce & Lodgepole Pine

Use: Big Sky 10” Round Logs, Posts, Purlins & Ceiling Beams, 2”x 6” T&G

Found in our Milled 10” Round Big Sky System, these stately logs are harvested from standing dead timbers of the Western United States. Their diameter provides excellent thermal-mass for naturally insulating a home. Engelman Spruce is also our species of choice for our 2”x 6” tongue and groove, creating the first floor ceiling and second floor decking in many of our homes is and also used as decking atop of rafters. Where many competitors choose to use low grades of Southern Yellow Pine, Honest Abe supplies a premium “Select Deck” grade of Engelman Spruce. In turn, there is almost no waste with this product, and it is much easier to build with. It’s a statement many of our competitors simply cannot make.

Western Red Cedar

Use: Cedar Lap Siding, Fascia, Exterior Door & Window Trim

The dark-red features of this beautiful species of wood creates a beautiful visual contrast between the trim and our logs. Its durability in this application is time-tested and proven. Western Red Cedar Lap Siding is used with our Timber Frame System. It’s often used on gable ends and dormers for esthetical appeal.

Because of the flexibility of this roof style, homeowners can be more creative when designing the size, shape and placement of interior rooms. Truss roof systems are affordable and common throughout our Genuine Select packages.

In the construction of our Timber Frame System, Honest Abe uses timeless construction methods to create a framework from 8”x 8” Douglas Fir vertical posts and horizontal beams. This “superstructure” is left exposed on the interior, while insulated wall panels sheath the exterior. Our Timber Frame System offers old-world country charm with superb flexibility to add color or decorative style to the interior. Our attention to detail can be recognized through the quality of the craftsmanship. Giving you the flexibility to design the kind of home you’ve always wanted, Honest Abe’s Timber Frame option brings the beauty of natural wood into your home’s interior. The framework is pre-cut, numbered, packaged and delivered to the home site. During the process of designing, manufacturing and delivering your package, Honest Abe will help put you in contact with professional builders to complete your log or timber home. With the HELP Build Program, we want to Help Everyone Locate Professional Builders to complete the construction and finishing process of your Honest Abe home package. The HELP Build Program is grounded in Honest Abe’s original dry-in service that is available in limited areas. During the dry-in stage, we will complete the following: • First floor framing and subfloor • Set the log or timber frame package • Construct the ceiling beam system • Build the roof system • Erect the gable ends • Install soffits, fascia and dormer trim • Install exterior doors and windows • Rough-in the interior walls and stairs • Build porches and decks Expanding on the dry-in service, the HELP Build Program makes it possible for new log home owners to get the kind of assistance they need for finishing their Honest Abe log home package with help from local independent contractors in your area. Honest Abe will assist you in locating qualified tradesmen, such as log home builders, electricians, plumbers, masons, excavators, etc. All will be professional and experienced in their trades.
