Store Makeover Checklist 1. CREATE A BUDGET.

CANDLES

Research costs to create a budget. Allocate funds for each category: flooring, paint, ceiling, lighting, window displays, furnishings/fixtures, equipment, props, new additions such as walls or architectural elements, cleaning supplies and labor. 2. HAVE A PLAN.

BATH

A plan — or sequence of plans that allow a seamless flow — creates a clear, readable message that provides maximum impact, i.e., touchpoints working together. 3. TAKE CARE OF PAPERWORK.

&

Check to see what, if any, construction or building permits are needed and get them submitted and signed a.s.a.p.

BODY

4. LOOK AT LIGHTING.

The Store at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC, a JGA client, features flexible and movable display blocks to accommodate an ever-changing collection of items.

5. FIGURE OUT FLOORING.

Flooring can be a large expense, but may be a necessary change based on age, condition and color. Consider and price out your options — carpet, wood, stone, ceramic and other materials, such as stained-concrete.

6. ANALYZE TRAFFIC FLOW.

Correcting bad traffic flow, often created by too many fixtures in too little space, provides some of the best makeover results.

GIFTABLES

Cost-saving measures at elizabethW included creating their own custommade tables at a fraction of the cost.

STATIONERY

A lighting plan may be the single greatest expense in a store design. In leased space, significant changes may not be allowed; work with what you have and add supplemental lighting to provide ambient, task and general lighting throughout the store.

7. REVIEW FIXTURES.

Good product presentation depends on having proper fixtures that provide the right surface-to-inventory ratio. Fixtures that offer the flexibility to configure and move provide creative options.

HOLIDAYS

8. THINK ABOUT SIGNAGE.

Great signage is important. Use it to visually create separate areas in the store and direct customers. 9. LOOK UP.

PLAYTHINGS

The ceiling space needs to visually connect to the floor through the use of fixtures, products and signage. A standard grid or suspension system can provide order and organization. 10. DON'T EXCLUDE THE EXTERIOR.

Curb appeal and visibility lure customers in. Good exterior lighting is essential.
