Ethereal rock crystal prisms create a stunning natural sculpture from Bliss Studio.

The Art of Refinement Quiet luxury breeds effortless style BY TRACY BULLA

legant refinement made a sweeping statement in High Point, marked by luxurious materials and finishes, clean, streamlined designs and deftly restrained embellishment. Textural layering rounded out the atmosphere of low-key luxe. Key materials included lush leathers and velvets, mixed with hair-on hide, Lucite, shagreen, linen and silk in a sophisticated mélange of quiet elegance. Embossed croc and snakeskin finishes also entrance with heady texture. Light and natural wood finishes were prevalent, accompanied by paler lacquered options. Gold finishes continude to gain importance, while adding the requisite touch of sophistication. Stainless steel held it own, especially when combined with leather or hide. The palette of creamy neutrals — white, taupe and beige — contributed to the overall feeling of calm, refined luxury, while also creating the perfect backdrop for bold, saturated colors used primarily as an accent. Deeper blues such as navy and ink offered dramatic contrast to the pale neutral palette, with bolder brights

E

such as peacock adding a vivid visual pop. Regardless of the application, blue emerged as the sought-after shade of the season. Other important accent colors include citron and orange, while all shades of purple and emerald green are on the rise. Classic design informed many of the hottest looks, pairing Greek key and bamboo fretwork with simple, clean styling for the most dramatic effect. Equestrian-inspired designs were also an important look, underscored by subtlety and restraint. Decorative embellishments were applied sparingly for the most dramatic impact and really pop this season. Again, the use of luxurious but refined elements such as gilding, crystals and quartz added the right note of look-at-me without screaming. Other natural elements such as capiz shell and mother-of-pearl enhanced the feeling of quiet sophistication. Prints were also an important element in the layering aspect, enhancing the primarily neutral palette and luxurious textural appeal. Not surprisingly, animal prints came on strong this season, combining the best of neutral and classic. Geometric patterns continued to dominate, especially chevron, flame-stitch and plaid, while abstracted, slightly ethnic interpretations infused a sense of both fun and sophistication.

Antiqued gold leaf sets off the lavishly textured Mandarin lamp, designed by Barry Dixon for Arteriors. Lean and lovely, the Rene Long bench from Julian Chichester highlights polished proportions with a faux shagreen finish in ivory.

Calligraphy This season, Chinese calligraphy inscriptions celebrate the decorative art of stylized, beautiful handwriting, infusing home accents with bold and ornamental style. A dramatic, high-contrast palette — ecru paired with deep ink or pure black — ensures exceedingly elegant, yet understated appeal. Sophisticated brush strokes bring this centuries-old art form most stylishly into the modern day realm of design. BY TRACY BULLA

Gem Stones

Get ready to be jeweled this season as gems sparkle brightly, casting a spell of outright luxury and polish. Natural mineral formations, such as rock crystal or geodes, present as stunning organic sculptures or highly decorative ornamentation. Other natural minerals — think alabaster and marble — play a large role in the latest introductions, especially in furniture and lighting applications. Designers, however, aren’t constricting themselves to the real thing, but are creatively working “faux” gems into the landscape. Look for these dazzling jewels to take shape as prints and patterns, particularly in renditions of malachite.

Tozai Home debuts a series of gemstone prints, designed by Dransfield & Ross.

Century’s malachite-patterned upholstery steals the spotlight in a lacquered fretwork chair.

BY TRACY BULLA

Chelsea House’s alabaster lamp takes its shape from a rough-cut gemstone for an organic modern look.

Greek

Key A traditional decorative element in both ancient Greek and Asian art, Greek key designs can symbolize — depending on how you look at it — infinity or unity, the twisting bends of a river, or the mazelike intricacy of a labyrinth. Take your pick because this striking design motif is enjoying a neoclassical revival this season. Look for Greek frets to adorn accent furniture, upholstery and pillows, and mirrors and more with an eye for instant captivation. Found in emboldened brights or luxe neutrals, the classic pattern employs timeless sophistication with all the style of a great Greek drama.

Worlds Away etches a labyrinthine Greek fret border in shimmering capiz shell for a truly stunning statement mirror.

BY TRACY BULLA

Greek keys dance across Cusquena, a new doublewoven and double-faced Peruvian flat-weave rug from AMS Imports, spiced with a rich, autumnal palette.

Thibaut’s Melrose chair flaunts fashionable meander upholstery, contemporized with a subtly blurred ikat effect.

Purple Shades of purple reveal a sense of relevant modernity, ranging from fresh pastel pops to rich, deep hues. Used as an accent color, a lively shot of lavender or lilac goes a long way in perking up a neutral setting. On the more understated side, subtle, luxuriant hues like plum and eggplant function as a decadent neutral backdrop to vibrant brights. Look for rugs, in particular, to revel in the plethora of purples on offer, complemented by highly covetable lamps, porcelain and pillows in this pleasing hue. BY TRACY BULLA Beautifully contrasting shades of purple enhance the botanical emblems of Mr. Brown’s pillow, backed in lush velvet.

Subtle geometric patterns lend a luxuriously textured effect to Safavieh’s organic viscose rug, highlighted with combination chenille loop-and-cut pile weaves.

Lively lavender refreshes Festoni’s classic wingback chair, featuring button tufting detail.

Palecek, Hooker, Hubbardton Forge among Pinnacle Award winners SIXTEEN AWARDS WERE presented at the annual event hosted by the American Society of Furniture Designers on Oct. 15. “The Pinnacle Awards both honor and recognize creative, relevant and original designs in home furnishings that push our industry to the next level,” John Conrad, ASFD vice president and 2012 Pinnacle Awards chairman, said in a statement earlier this year. Winners were announced in 15 product categories and for the Green Leaf Award, recognizing sustainable design. In the Accessories category, the winner was Gilded Lotus wall décor, by Andrew Palecek for Palecek. The judges’ comments: “When it comes to dressing up a room, Palecek portrays a versatile art form in Gilded Lotus Wall Decor. The very interesting natural material exudes a glamorous ambience that is chic and ecofriendly.” Other accessories finalists were the Marjorelle mirror by Cecil Adams for Currey & Company, and the Maxwell ottoman by American Leather. In the Lighting category, the winner was Autumn Twilight chandelier, by Danielle Elise Dzurik and John A. Fretz III for Golden Lighting. The judges’ comments: “The Autumn Twilight Chandelier by Golden Lighting demonstrates an updated use of crystals in a modern interpretation of classic overhead lighting. The organic shape is very distinctive and unique. We think this delicious design is a great piece of bling for the home.” For the Occasional Storage category, the winner was Le Papillion chest, by Cindy Hall and Erica Wingo for Hooker Furniture. Comments: “The Melange Collection by Hooker Furniture takes an eclectic blend of color and texture to deliver artistry in unique accent pieces. We love the complex combination of materials that pairs a textural burlap finish with decorative painting. The chest has great proportion of scale to create a fun, cute gem that is pleasing to the eye.” For Occasional Tables, the winner was Avalon Heights, by Richard Schroeder, Denis Kissane and Gary Hokanson for Stanley. Comments: “Stylish, graceful lines lend a glamourous appeal to accent

tables in the Avalon Heights Collection by Stanley Furniture. Loloi unveils new branding, logo LOLOI DEBUTED ITS new logo and brand concept Oct. 14 at its High Point Market party. “A Pattern of Distinction” is the company’s new tagline, and a modern, stylized logo accompanies it. “A Pattern of Distinction has a clever double meaning that represents us well,” said Cyrus Loloi, company executive. “Our patterns on individual rugs are original and distinctive, but over time, we’ve also developed a pattern of introducing distinctive rugs and maintaining solid business practices.” The new logo is a stylized “L,” which subtly conveys the idea of a thread. According to Loloi, this imagery represents the material and techniques used in creating the company’s unique rugs. While the company’s full name, Loloi Rugs, was included on the previous logo, “Rugs” is absent from the new version. “Loloi has plans in the near future to expand into pillows, throws and other home furnishings,” Loloi said. “We wanted our new logo to be reflective of our plans to move forward.” This new brand identity will be included in all of Loloi’s future products and applied to all of its branding and marketing communications. In other company news, Loloi launched a social media campaign to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. For every “Like” on Facebook or “Follow” on Twitter through the market period, Loloi donated $1 to the Dallas County Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. “We all know someone whose life has been touched by breast cancer,” Loloi said. “At Loloi Rugs, we will continue to support fighting this disease by contributing to a cure with the hope that one day this disease will be eradicated.”

Carson Kressley visits High Point Market BY ALEXA BOSCHINI

CELEBRITY STYLIST AND fashion designer Carson Kressley visited the High Point Market as he explores expanding his signature brand beyond the runway and into the home. Kressley has been working with V&A Luxury Licensing, a licensing and brand development firm, as well as Michael J. Rabatin Design Studio, to bring his fashion expertise to the home decor market. “The leap from one industry to another is organic,” Kressley said. “I feel like there’s a strong correlation between dressing yourself and dressing your home. Furniture really is fashion.” In addition to his work as a fashion designer and stylist, Kressley is a best-selling author and has served as a style contributor on several TV programs. He previously appeared on Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, hosted Lifetime’s How to Look Good Naked and competed on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. He likened room design to fashion, with the sofa acting as the “little black dress” that can be accessorized around. “Women trust me to dress them,” he said. “I’d love to navigate them toward dressing their homes as well. Furniture as fashion makes total sense — that’s the way we live.” Kressley described his brand as “stylish and sartorial with a healthy dose of wit and fun.” He’s been interested in home decor since he was 9 years old, when he volunteered to decorate his family’s new house. After finding success in the fashion world, he said the time seems right to share his perspective in a new way. “You have to find the right partners. You have to start slowly,” he said. “It’s about building a brand, and that takes time.” Whatever form his foray into the home decor

industry takes, Kressley said he hopes to inspire people to be confident in their home fashion choices. “Staying home is the new going out,” he said, and he wants to help people create environments that make them feel good about themselves and their lives — to help them develop what he called “confident style.” “It’s about educating people,” Kressley said. “Knowledge is power, and when you know what you’re doing, you feel confident about it.” For more information, contact Gail Vasquez of V&A Luxury Licensing at gvasquezny@aol.com. Candice Olson greeted a large crowd at the Surya showroom during market.

Candice Olson visits Surya DESIGNER AND HGTV personality Candice Olson stopped by the Surya showroom during the market to discuss her rug collection, which features more than 100 designs in multiple sizes. Olson, who hosts Divine Design and Candice Tells All on HGTV, drew a large crowd of fans who were eager to learn more about her approach to design. Olson said she is drawn to traditional styles reinterpreted in a fresh, modern way. “What I simply love about traditional design is when it’s reinterpreted simply,” Olson said. Soft colors, subtle contrast and simple, elegant patterns define Olson’s collection for Surya, which she said she crafted with the bare essence of the design in mind. One of her rugs, for example, features an enlarged damask, its size emphasizing the pattern’s form. “I take out all the extraneous details, so I pare it down and then I super-size it,” Olson said. “That’s what makes that pattern new and fresh, but it’s still familiar.”
