We’d like to sincerely thank all our clients who have championed Home & Design over the past 15 years. Without your editorial submissions, we would not have the content you see on the pages of this stunning Design Issue. These submissions are plentiful and on the cutting edge of great design, and the compliments from our readers indicate we are on the right track. Also, thanks to the hundreds of you who turn out for our bi-annual networking launch events, like the one pictured here from January. It is a real treat to see this luxury group assembled twice per year as we unveil each issue, and I am so happy to facilitate this opportunity. On a separate note, every once in a long while, a person comes along who completely surprises you with their intelligence, creativity, and work ethic. Kelsey Miklavcic, our Executive Editor, is one of those people. She has ‘the right stuff’ and I think all our clients know that when they meet her. So it is with bittersweet sentiment that I thank her for her past two years of unwavering devotion and tireless enthusiasm to support the shared goal of publishing excellence our staff embraces every day. Kelsey is moving on to an exciting adventure with her fiancé Brian Hartlage to live and explore Denver, Colorado, and we all wish them every happiness. Thank you for another great year of Home & Design! Warmly,

Just 15 years ago, when Home & Design was a little magazine in diapers, I never dreamed it would become the epicenter of luxury living for Southwest Florida. After looking at dozens of homes, our talented team has assembled the very finest selection of luxury residences from the area’s foremost architects, custom home builders, and interior designers. Our goal is to bring you the most interesting and varied architectural and design choices, so you can glean ideas that suit your lifestyle. I hope you agree that our 2015 Design Issue meets that objective. Once you’ve perused our feature articles and dog-eared every page that speaks to you, contact the companies found throughout the magazine to make those dreams a reality. When you contact them, please let them know you appreciate their support of Home & Design magazine. They make it all possible. Whether you have just bought a home, or are improving your existing abode, we look forward to being your inspiration for many years to come.

BREAKING THE RULES AND CREATING THE UNEXPECTED

52

THE DESIGN ISSUE 2015

A mixture of traditional and modern architecture give this home a refreshing look that is a break from the norm and evokes excitement and curiosity.

THE DESIGN ISSUE 2015

Breaking the rules and creating the unexpected is what homeowner Ann Cowherd set out to do in this one-of-a-kind Florida vacation home. From the moment you arrive at the doorstep, the attention to detail and the whimsical nature of this residence are apparent. A hot pink doorbell and house numbers serve as an introduction to the playful design throughout. After drawing her vision for the home on a cocktail napkin, Ann knew that the most important task would be finding the right people to help her build it. She has remodeled and decorated eight other homes in her lifetime, but this is the first one she built from the ground up. With great thought and care, Ann requested the services of BUILD and MHK Architecture & Planning. “My builder was amazing,” says Ann. “The project manager just got me. He really understood my vision and always found ways to improve upon my ideas and bring them to life.” One of the strategic advantages of working with BUILD is the experience that comes from their vast and successful commercial background. BUILD’s ability to approach challenges from different

solutions and techniques not typically available in the residential market are applauded by their luxury home clients. The exterior of the home shares elements of traditional and modern architecture. “This was an exciting challenge because our goal was to meld two distinctive styles in order to create a unique design that was still contextual,” explains Matthew Kragh, owner of MHK Architecture & Planning. The use of horizontal lines is a contemporary nod, while the traditional roof forms keep everything in balance with the style of the area’s surrounding homes.

Executed brilliantly in every inch of the home, Ann chose a color palette of hot pink and turquoise to combine with neutrals. These brilliant pops of color are thoughtfully and strategically placed throughout the space in such a way that it seems effortless and organic. “I went for a look that is edgy, rocker chic, and sophisticated,” explains Ann. The wood inlays are a refreshing deviation from the usual expanse of concrete that is typical of most outdoor spaces in the area. The material used is Ipe, which reduces the heat, glare, and increases the softness and intimacy of the space. A final nod to the color scheme is presented in the form of a pink and turquoise mosaic tile that covers the hot tub and accents the perimeter of the pool. The Cowherds wanted to create a place that was fun and sexy, as well as family friendly. Their use of space and the playful nature of their design create an atmosphere that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. “This home offers so many different experiences,” states homeowner and ESPN celebrity Colin Cowherd. “We’ve created a place where we can entertain and let loose with our friends, as well as spend quality time with our family.”

The stainless steel encased television floats next to the storefront-style glass wine storage display below the staircase making commonly unused space another artful focal point. The stainless steel band highlights the wine room enclosure and is traced along the top of the kitchen cabinets. Part of the home’s central great room plan, a custom-size dining table features a bleached wood cut slab top and matching trunk legs joining the living room and kitchen. When Jamie Lawrence of Elite Cabinetry, Inc. first met with the homeowner to design the kitchen, he encountered a true ‘Designing for the Sexes’ type of challenge. The Mrs. expressed a penchant for the traditional, and the Mr. was ultra contemporary. Lawrence masterfully blended their tastes into an eclectic and spectacular transitional design. The refrigerator French doors are enlarged to connect the sightlines of the surrounding cabinetry. The large scale double hardware on all drawer fronts acts as jewelry highlighting the clean profile along the perimeter, a bell-shaped stainless steel hood custom crafted by Elite Cabinetry, Inc. is flanked by stainless steel wrapped bookshelves. In the foreground is the kitchen island anchoring stainless steel wrapped legs, and drawer fronts with chrome hardware. “Exposed hinges and inset door fronts allow this island to stand firmly on its own,” says Lawrence. The master bedroom exudes femininity with the grey-toned zebra print sheer drapery treatments and plush faux fur fabric on the bench and toss pillow. The softness is balanced with structured Roman Shades selected with the same color of the wallpaper. A

glittered grey wallpaper with circle pattern in the master bedroom functions as the headboard. “The homeowner requested a grand feel with crystal chandeliers amid the cool contemporary palette used throughout the home,” explains Godsey-Smith. The man of the house enjoys a custom hidden closet concealed within the master suite, Lawrence designed a dual purpose wall unit and His closet space featuring side servo-drive cabinet opening system, utilizing the unused space behind the television for all his ties, watches, and belts which often get lost in a common drawer. “Maximizing space is a specialty here at Elite,” says Lawrence. Variation in the wood floor continued from the bedroom brings warmth to the otherwise cool elements of the master bathroom. Crisp white cabinets are topped with Calcutta Gold marble and carried up the backsplash. A lavish fabric vanity seat floats with Lucite legs at the custom make-up vanity with hidden storage. “The make-up vanity wall was designed as the centerpiece with a full marble wall and a floating, back-lit mirror. The vanity also houses several drawers meticulously recessed in the wall between plumbing and studs,” says Lawrence. The make-up vanity and coordinating sink cabinetry feature dramatic 5” high tapered legs, skirt moldings and inset doors to convey the look of fine furniture,” says Lawrence. To highlight the variation in the marble, the homeowner requested minimally styled wall mounted plumbing fixtures. Separating the master bathroom and closet is a contemporary take on the traditional

The fully upholstered chairs and ottoman act as giant pillows to create a comfortable and intimate seating arrangement,” describes Godsey-Smith. The guest house’s cantilevered stairway stretches over the pool and is an architectural element that can be seen from anywhere in the house. “The floating stairway is its own sculptural artwork creating light and shadow. The cabana, outdoor living area, living room, and kitchen are designed as if they are placed around the pool and stairway,” says Kragh.

BERMUDA THIS ‘GREEN’ HOME BLENDS CONTEMPORARY WITH COASTAL

THE DESIGN ISSUE 2015

95

Fil and Wendy Adams-Mercer, an English couple used to big furniture in small spaces asked for comfort in their Naples home and wanted to incorporate elements of their coastal location in the home’s theme and style. Designer Dominique Coffman of Design West answered her clients’ call for a contemporary home with a light and airy design. “Keeping over-scaled but streamlined furniture helped to retain the coastal feel,” explains Coffman. “As the design developed, the homeowners wanted to add in little punches of feminine elegance,” she says. “With a unique blend of styles being represented, the Adams-Mercer home encompasses both comfort and elegance with ease, while staying true to the design’s coastal roots,” adds Coffman. Architect Don Stevenson of Don Stevenson Design calls the home’s style “British Bermuda,” explaining that “the clients spent a lot of time in the islands.” The home is unique in its two-story courtyard style, but encompasses plenty of coastal touches inside and out. Unique features of the home also include its green elements, such as solar panels on the roof to take advantage of the natural power of Florida’s sun, and attention to detail. Although the home’s exterior appears from a distance to be made of board or lap siding, the vertical and horizontal lines were carefully formed by a cementitious craftsman, explains Stevenson. Use of natural elements, such as wood and woven materials in the home’s interior design and furnishings, along with wooden beams on the ceiling and exterior, provide a seamless thread from indoors to outside. The design team worked closely together and with their clients on every detail, including careful selection of materials and color palettes. “We actually sat with the clients in our conference room with our three-dimensional model of the home and colored it in various color palettes until we came up with the one that they liked best,” says Stevenson. The exterior color, which is Sherwin Williams Dover White in satin finish, is complemented by the home’s blue metal roof, touches of wood in the beams and garage doors and natural stacked stone in the columns. The roof and shutters complement the nearby waves, but also are practical. “The metal roof has a longer life,” says Gary Smith, senior estimator/project manager with BCBE Construction, LLC, the home’s builder.

LED lighting throughout. It’s also loaded with energy efficiency, says Smith. “I would say my favorite aspect of the home is its green features,” adds Smith. In addition to the 10-kilowatt solar panels on the roof, the home has a solar water heater, Icynene spray-foam insulation, and an ultra-efficient Mitsubishi HVAC system. “It also uses reclaimed water collected through two cisterns, which goes through a filtration system and is used for the septic system,” says Smith. In fact, the home’s design highlights aesthetics and function from outdoor elements. “We maximize the arc of the sun as it relates to solar panels on the roof and natural breezes,” says Stevenson. “Cross-ventilation runs through the home from four directions on the first and second floor,” he explains. The breezes move through the master bedroom in the back of the home and a special shuttered opening above the master bath tub. “We call that the honeymoon bath,” says Stevenson. By opening the oversized shutters, the coastal breezes reach all the way into the bath area. Of course, the shutters can be closed for privacy. The entire rear of the home maximizes views with plenty of windows and a second-floor wrap-around deck. An upper deck sits a few steps above a second-story entertainment area to provide striking water views. With tropical breezes, an airy color palette, a stunning design and contemporary touches, it’s hard to beat the comfort and island feel of this Naples home. And it’s a tribute to the collaboration of the clients and their design and build team. “This project was a long labor of love,” says Coffman.

The stone anchors the entrance while the staircase elevates over the foyer and open living room. “The staircase stretches along the travertine stacked stone wall and has a cable railing to avoid any obstruction of the room’s focal point,” describes Stevenson. Two exquisite wood finishes are utilized throughout the home’s flooring. A silver-grey tone wood from the European Elegance Collection is installed on the first floor, while the staircase features an ebony stain, both manufactured by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring. “The unique and distinct oiling process used to enhance the coloring and characteristics of the wood is meticulously hand-crafted by artisans in our family-owned European factories. These skilled artisans allow the floor to exude a sophisticated ease inspired by architectural shapes in soft hues. This floor captures that spirit from Old World glamour to a modern cosmopolitan life,” shares Arturo Guido of Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring. “The stairwell light fixture is the driving force of inspiration which guided us through the home. We wanted a piece that was just as beautiful on the inside as it was on the outside. The Elon lighting fixture has a watered glass cylinder that is on a beautifully finished chrome canopy that cascades down like a waterfall in the stairwell,” explains Lynne Stambouly of Lighting First’s Specialty Lighting Division. Natural light floods the open living room with oversized windows sourced by South Florida Millwork, JELDWEN’s largest distributor of custom collection wood windows in Naples, and capped by a staggering 24’ ceiling. “We maximized the use of windows and natural light to bring the outside in with both southern and northern exposures to the home,” states Stevenson. An illuminated, three-sectioned, floating ceiling canopy brings coziness to the open plan. “A dimensional and squared off light fixture was chosen to coordinate with the shape of the dropped ceilings,” notes Stambouly. The deep hue and depth of the artwork is reflected on the mirrored cabinet below. “The mix of warm and cool elements featured with the dining room table and mirrored buffet is unexpected and reflects the other beautiful elements around the room,” explains Melissa Dial of Don Stevenson Design, Inc. The ultra-plush, hand-knotted Tencel viscose shag rug manufactured by Bach Fine Rugs provides a platform for the soft, organic-textured, and warm theme. “The living room is a space where this idea of ‘modern-organic’ really came to life. Carter Grant of Grate Fireplace & Outdoor Living. The striking fireplace column is a focal point in the living room. “The Ortal 200 TS fireplace is a specialty piece with a threesided glass opening giving optimal viewpoints which truly gives a comfortable feeling to the contemporary palette,” adds Diane Key, also of Grate Fireplace & Outdoor Living. A multi-faceted rectangular mirror in the hallway beckons you into the master suite. “Silver, gold, and copper metallic accents from a toss pillow provided inspiration for the space. We wanted a balance of masculine and feminine elements. The curved leather chaise lounge from International Design Source contrasts the linear wood of the headboard and night stands,” says Dial. The elegant welded chrome figurative sculpture titled, “Diana” measuring 30” x 34” was commissioned specifically for the space from Rothlynn Fine Art FL and adds another delicatevirile contrast. The lilac colored metallic surface treatment on the headboard wall by O’Guin Decorative Finishes provides a softness to the room while the chain mail basket light fixture and matching sconces add glamorous drama to the palette. “The design team was looking to add a pop of soft color that would enhance the serene atmosphere of the master bedroom. By changing the trim and door colors to a deeper gray that related directly to the floor, we softened an element of contrast. This allows the furniture, fixtures and sculpture to take the stage. Completing the master bedroom, the exquisite area rug from Bach Fine Rugs is completely hand knotted in India from wool and viscose in an alternating loop and cut design. In regard to the lanai and the surrounding landscape design, “I tend to look at things very organically or structurally,” shares Groff. The glass tile and travertine surrounding the pool, installed by Nassau Pools, accentuates the uncommon rectilinear layout. A MASTERFUL DEVELOPER’S “HOME WITH A SOUL” IN PELICAN BAY

178

THE DESIGN ISSUE 2015

Wonderful things happen when talented people join together in a creative process. When Leslie Sherman of Calusa Bay Development began work on this 5,700 square foot home in Pelican Bay, she assembled a team comprised of top professionals who all share a common vision — to design and build exceptional, functional, unique living spaces. From an architect renowned for his impeccable design sense, to a general contractor with an eye for unique millwork design and incredible attention to detail, this team worked together to create a home that encompasses the best of modern living with classic design elements. “Each project starts with an exceptional location, and in this case, a huge lot in the heart of Pelican Bay, walking distance to the beach, with a beautiful view and the ability to provide an extremely private and well landscaped outdoor living space,” says Sherman. “From there the team worked to create a home that would maximize this lot’s many strengths, that of a home with a soul of its own, inspired by great design and artful craftsmanship, filled with natural light, beautiful finishes, and thoughtful attention to detail.” The detail-oriented team’s commitment to thoughtful design and natural finishes is clearly evident. Natural shell stone, stained cypress wood accents, and artful lighting choices create a unique exterior. In fact, creating that exterior was one of the challenges that architect John Cooney, Partner at Stofft Cooney Architects, faced while designing the home. “While the market is leaning toward a more transitional contemporary look, Pelican Bay is still a very traditional community. We had to infuse elements of transitional and West Indies style into a home that fit the community,” says Cooney. The result is a striking stucco, stone, and wood exterior, with a rustic contemporary entry that features an open gable design crafted from exposed heavy timber trusses. The heavy timbers pair beautifully with artful stone columns and a 12’ mahogany and glass double entry door to create stunning exterior visual impact, as well as the perfect prelude to the home’s casual yet sophisticated interior. Kevin Schafer Light from inside the vaulted front entry highlights the stunning entrance of this West Indies inspired home, becoming even more beautiful as the sun sets.

of Kevin Schafer Landscape created the perfect backdrop for the home, using classic landscape choices that add a timeless look to the exterior and enhance the unique vibe of the home. The home is exceptional, with a timeless rustic contemporary feel… a project of which Sherman and business partner Richard Counts are obviously very proud. “This is the first in a series of fresh, new inspiring homes that we have planned for Pelican Bay, and judging by the response, we hit a big home run here,” notes Counts. “The response to this home started to build even before completion,” adds Taber Tagliasacchi, listing agent for the home and Broker for Calusa Bay Properties. “Prospective buyers in Pelican Bay were very taken with this home’s distinctive style and fabulous outdoor living space.” Matt Knauf, general contractor from Knauf-Koenig Group, led the team’s execution of Cooney’s breathtaking project design. Knauf-Koenig Group has worked with Calusa Bay Development and Stofft Cooney Architects on numerous previous projects. “I’ve been a carpenter all my life, and I enjoy adding unique elements in my projects. Knauf-Koenig Group worked with Leslie to design most of the interior woodwork, from the moldings to casings to ceiling details found in every room,” says Knauf. “Matt and his team are truly talented professionals. They supplied a wealth of great ideas for this project, all flawlessly executed, resulting in the finishes and detail that make this home world class,” says Sherman. Some examples include vaulted tongueand-groove ceilings with painted box beam detail that also hide air conditioning ducts so ceiling details remain uninterrupted; mitered corners on all stone work; and perfectly matched exterior stain colors on different wood species. To furnish this dream home, Calusa Bay Development teamed up with local designer Michael Hayes. “Quiet sophistication was something we kept at the forefront as Leslie and I made design choices intended to infuse the home with livability,” says Hayes, designer at Clive Daniel Home. In the den, mixed elements create a transitional feel in this cozy space. Twin sofas by Isenhour Furniture frame the Tera Sur live edge wood and metal cocktail table, while the hardscape beyond the large window draws the eye to the spectacular view of the pool and golf course beyond. A handmade rug from the Mirage collection by Loloi completes the furniture grouping. The 12’ weathered wood cathedral floor mirror from the Century Archive collection leans casually against the wall, beautifully accenting this inviting room with a view.

In the great room, mixed metals and natural elements come together to create a comfortable space. A neutral palette of soft grays and blues is carried throughout the room, and the home. The main indoor seating area is flanked with a pair of unique platinum finished mirrors by John Richard, resting above custom finished Century console chests that introduce a hint of the current trend of gold inspired finishes, while staying true to the overall relaxed design. Atop a handmade Loloi rug sits an inviting grouping of furniture by Century, Baker, Charleston Forge and Burton James, all positioned overlooking the home’s stunning 50’ pool, 8’ infinity spa and long inviting views of the Pelican Bay club course. At the opposite end of the great room sits a stunning Century live-edge walnut slab dining table, flanked by Century skirted linen side chairs and finished with a pair of Stanford Cumberland captain’s chairs. The dining chandelier by John Richard, courtesy of Wilson Lighting, has both glamorous and classic elements, while an original oil painting by Kay Hurley, courtesy of the private art collection of Sherman’s business partners Richard & Meggie Counts, hangs above a custom finished Habersham sideboard. “The live-edge dining room table adds the natural element to this room,” observes Hayes. “It’s a little rustic which really goes along with the theme of livability and warmth in this home.” The room is flooded with natural light on three sides, courtesy of John Cooney’s penchant for as much natural light as possible throughout his homes. “The use of natural light is a critical, often overlooked component to be integrated into the design process of every great home,” says Cooney. “Natural light, if used properly will create a serene, organic feeling that cannot be replicated through any other means.” A stroll through the great room ends in the music room, where the home’s antique Steinway baby grand piano, shown here bathed in afternoon sunlight, is the focal point. A perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine and read a book, or take a nap with your favorite friend, the music room also hosts a glass enclosed 350 bottle wine room and a gorgeous custom designed dry bar. The bar, a statement piece in its own right, was designed by Ruffino Cabinetry and boasts a four-tiered glass enclosed upper bar cabinet with Subzero refrigerator/ freezer drawer combo and additional storage below.

The builder that made it all happen was Marc Hatcher of The Rock Custom Homes. Hatcher and his lifelong cohorts caught the vision and ran with it. They took ownership, suggested impressive changes, and had the skills to make anything happen. When working with an existing structure,

many of the unusual pieces acquired for these projects. While driving down Bonita Beach Road, he saw a mysterious piece of furniture on a roadside truck. What do you do when you see such a rare treasure? Call Kristen, of course. When she arrived at the scene, her gut told her that this was either a huge mistake or the best purchase ever. It took four men, a rolling platform, a chain saw, and five hours to move it into the home. Taking these types of risks and making these leaps of faith are exactly how Kristen has been able to develop a signature style that is distinct yet undefined. The living room came together with a chic safari theme that unfolds around the Ralph Lauren coffee table and sofas. When it came to making decisions on the interior details, Kristen turned to her friend Jett Thompson for assistance. “Jett has a great style. She mixes new and old like I do, and her store has a magical selection of finishing touches that make a house a home,” explains Williams. “Working together was seamless,” describes Thompson,

are the only company in the area that is licensed to install a Mafi floor, and they pride themselves on providing the highest quality services in the Naples market. Taking a chopped-up floor plan, and turning it into one open and expansive great room, really paid off. “Originally the kitchen was in the center of the whole space and everything was divided by walls. Now you walk in and can see right outside to the outdoor living area,” explains Jallad. The new plan called for a kitchen with a simple design and clean lines that utilized the space to its maximum potential. Hatcher recommended Craig LeBeau, the owner of Studio West Cabinetry, to create all of the home’s custom cabinetry. “Working with this team was an all-around great experience for us. We all worked well together and were able to achieve the final product of Kristen’s vision,” describes LeBeau.

I knew a collection of his works would be the perfect jumping off point for the type of atmosphere that should be created in each room of this home,” expresses Williams. “I purchased each piece from Gallery One on Fifth Avenue.” The master bedroom draws its colors from his crab painting. Continuing to use a mixture of glam and rustic elements, bold statements are made with an oversized gold lantern chandelier and large mounted antlers over the bed. The outdoor living area is clean and sophisticated. On the hunt for a perfect arrangement of lanai furniture, Kristen stopped by Traditions Classic Home Furnishings, a favorite store in downtown Naples. Right at the front door sat the impressive JANUS et Cie chaise lounge chairs that can be seen on the lanai of this home today. What sets Traditions apart from many furniture stores is their unique approach to inventory. They sell everything off the floor, so you can come in to shop, and take your purchases home with you that same day. “Our store has a really creative energy. We remerchandise the showroom weekly, which is one reason why customers love to shop here,” shares Suzanne Schumann, owner of Traditions Classic Home Furnishings. The old kidney shaped pool was replaced by a new linear and contemporary design. “We responded to the request to update the existing pool with a full design, shape, and feature renovation by integrating fire and water features as well as a seamless spa addition,” describes Mitch Hamilton of Kool Poolz Design & Construction. The entire project was a tremendous team effort. Kristen’s right-hand woman, Mary Catherine White of Naples White House Luxury Real Estate, was an integral part of the process from start to finish. “We wanted this house to be the sand in your toes, playful, exhilarating and fun…not the norm,” explains White. “Kristen can see beyond what most people see. She has the mind of a banker, the heart of a philanthropist, the artistic flair of a designer, and the vision of a developer. It’s such a privilege to walk alongside KW Properties. to find a space, have all the utilities, and then make it look beautiful,” describes Kemp. By embracing the original architecture and adding new features, Rooch’s “New” Hamptons style ties all of the rooms together with a seamless flow. Nearly all of the furniture is sourced through International Design Source (IDS). “We are basically the back office for the interior designer community,” defines Emilio Sadez of International Design Source. He explains that as a wholesale operation with 40,000 feet of showroom, “We have the flexibility to select trend-setting, cutting edge pieces. The designers come to us for inspiration, and we help facilitate turning their vision into a reality.” The Swaim sofas featured here hail from the IDS contemporary showroom, offering a graceful, curved back line with a lustrous, ivory, velvet fabric. Bergamo silk pillows in a “greige” color and custom lumbar pillows in a soft, blue silk finish the sofas. Nesting tables and a cocktail table from Swaim are perfect accessories to the elegant seating. The Aledecor mirror uses two stacked frames to add dimension to the wall. Stambouly notes that the Euro Fase lighting fixture was chosen after the mirror, precisely to reflect the beauty of the fixture from multiple angles. “The fixture is all a tiny mesh chain gathered together at the bottom. The edge highlights chrome accents throughout the house,” adds Stambouly. The formal sitting room update would not have been complete without replacing the fireplace mantle. The new mantle joins six pieces of stained rifted oak, creating stylish lines and a unique edge detail. In addition, Naples Build widened the arched hallway openings for the noteworthy artworks by Jamali, and Lighting First skillfully added art lighting to the niches to further enhance the art. Final touches in this room came from Saundra Riccardelli of Sweetgrass Designs who punctuates with a custom white phalaenopsis orchid floral centerpiece. “This is a clean space,” Riccardelli asserts, “and every piece has a purpose and a reason for being there.”

THE DESIGN ISSUE 2015

The efforts to bring sophistication with comfort are most clearly seen in the living room. The soothing colors of the room and textured walls with the modern lines of the sofas and custom built-in with hand-hammered finishes demonstrate how unexpected elements can successfully blend class with comfort, creating a truly unique space.Â

The theme of Moraya Bay is “upscale beach house” and it boasts three bedroom-suites, an office and floor-to-ceiling windows that display either the Gulf of Mexico or the bay, depending on which side, east or west, the homeowner is facing. “We really made an effort to make sure we got the lighting right at all times of day,” Berry said. “It has a real special glow in the whole area.”

of unlikely pairing, that of refined sofas with a rustic table, that make this home so unique. The sofas could easily have been the perfect touch in a different home and a completely different environment, Berry explained, but with the right colors, they blend seamlessly with more austere elements, like the coffee table.

Just off the grand salon is this formal dining area. It boasts the same textured wallpaper that unifies the entire home with a sense of beach relaxation, but with all of the elegant flooring and furnishings incorporated, the luxury isn’t forgotten. Opposite: The kitchen, sitting just off the family room, was a complete remodel, but improved upon the existing architectural features. The colors were selected based upon the aqua hues from one of the homeowners’ paintings. All the built-in cabinetry and millwork were custom built by Hyland Custom Cabinetry.

Berry ensured that the entire unit conveys a feeling of being on the beach and being surrounded by shimmering sea glass. And that effort to maintain seamless, and yet unique, is reflected in how each room draws from the same color palette. This is most evident in Berry’s favorite room of the home - the main king guest suite. Not only does it bear one of the most special features of the home, a chartreuse upholstered padded wall, it is the most dramatic

Through the use of varying textures, like marble to linen to smooth wood, the space doesn’t appear to be static. Even though the home is luxurious, it feels comfortable. And Berry makes sure that no detail in the project is left out. The furniture in each of the rooms is positioned to provide maximum water views, to “remind you of the special place in which you are living,” concludes Berry.

In the master bedroom, a Braxton chair covered in gray linen, with contrasting welt, invites reclining in front of the bay window overlooking the water. Silver leaf drawer fronts add glimmer to the dresser, mercury glass lamps flank the bed.

The Cinnabar Design team used an elegant tone-on-tone lattice-patterned wallpaper to dress the master bath in quiet style. The custom cabinetry was finished with a gray glaze, adding depth to the vanities. Porcelain tile floors, wainscoting, tub surround and shower walls give the illusion of richly veined Carrera marble. For the master bedroom, Walter and Hall made extensive use of fine linen to create a look that was both elegant and relaxed. “We always envision the master bedroom as a retreat,” explains Hall. “We strive to make it a restful place.” Yet even here, silver accents appear. Silver leaf drawer fronts add glimmer to the dresser, mercury glass lamps flank the bed. The ever-present organic coral is rendered in sculpture atop a glass base on one night stand, and in its natural form, accessorizes the tableau staged on the over sized bed tray. Walter and Hall are hands-on decorators in every aspect, bringing a special synergy to each project, none of which is too big for them to tackle. “We get really inspired working together,” enthuses Hall. “And we end up with a better product.” It is a truly successful synergy, and in all cases yields a truly successful result.

McGarvey Custom Homes’ Hepburn estate model takes the stage in Quail West, a Stock Development community renowned for its refined lifestyle.

Like the fiercely independent and spirited leading lady for which it is named, McGarvey Custom Homes’ Hepburn model in Stock Development’s Quail West features, “the elegance and charm of traditional style together with an emphasis on warm sophisticated comfort,” explains McGarvey’s Director of Sales and Marketing Brett Backus. Residential designer Rich Guzman of R.G. Designs describes the architectural design of the Hepburn. “Everybody does retro linear design—lots of rectangles. We wanted to do angles,” says Guzman, claiming that, as the actress did herself, “Angles are making a comeback.” The front elevation is clean-lined, from the flat cement tile roof with popular Caribbean-style corbels and shuttered turret and entry, to the gently curving driveway and circular motor court. Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design (ALD) placed a trio of Pygmy Date Palms in the rotunda of the motor court and repeated the circular design with plantings of Foxtail Palms surrounded by pink Silhouette™ Bougainvillea. The canopy of the Foxtail Palms creates a trellis effect. “We are landscaping the sky as well as the ground,” says Andrea. “When designing a landscape, we consider the sense of scale, the shadow patterns and the opportunity for up lighting,” Andrea continues. ALD used naturalized plants, incorporating lower shrubs near walkways and terracing the height of plantings moving outward from the home. “We do that so you don’t feel claustrophobic,” explains Andrea.

The view through the foyer to the water feature beyond is a hallmark of McGarvey Custom Homes. According to Clive Daniel Home interior designer Charlie Hansen, “McGarvey likes water features front and center, so right away you get the feeling of ‘I’m in Florida.’”

“The Reilleys wanted their new interiors to match their lifestyle - elegant and easy,” explains Sherri DuPont. “We came back in to ‘de-Med’ this home,” she chuckles. She coined the phrase to describe the process of transforming the dark, heavy Mediterranean-style interiors typical of homes built in the early 2000s into modern spaces.

“We gutted the kitchen, squaring off the old boomerang style counter,” says DuPont. What was originally an awkward octagonal space became a simple, functional geometric one. The built-in bookcase was a niche in the hallway that DuPont turned around to open to the kitchen and filled with Murano glass accessories in vibrant shades of orange, her “happy color.” The black lacquered Century bar stools are covered in a warm gray fabric with sheen to it, complementing the metallic footrest and the satin nickel finishes on the kitchen fixtures. Custom-built raised front walnut cabinets and a built-in desk add functionality and classic style to the kitchen. pendant lamps hang alongside a sophisticated modular Hudson Valley chandelier, casting a glow on the granite waterfall edge island. However, it is the lighted glass front cabinets that make a dramatic impact. “They add enormous depth at night,” describes Stambouly. The living room was reoriented to keep the view front and center. The French doors are flanked by classic tie-striped draperies. “We didn’t want to look at the back of a sectional; we wanted to look through the space to the marina beyond. The result is more inviting,” explains DuPont. Barely recognizable among the new furnishings is the Reilleys’ original coffee table. By refinishing the piece using a lighter shade for the top, the table’s Asian influence is emphasized. Repurposing a piece is one of DuPont’s favorite things to do.

Lotus pods and leaves fill a resin palm boat on the refinished Asian-look cocktail table. Orange pillows and a piece of Murano glass provide the pop of color in the reconfigured living room. Warm hickory hardwood floors and neutral backgrounds are the perfect foil for the pops of color in the artwork, side chair and pillows in the TV room. A wall of doors across from the bed left no spot to mount a TV, so a pop-up TV cabinet was placed at the foot of the bed and refinished in an elegant java shade. DuPont commissioned new cabinetry with contemporary lines and placed a silver travertine bowl atop the new vanity.

308

THE DESIGN ISSUE 2015

In the master suite DuPont used a grey beige on the walls, slightly darker than the linen color used elsewhere in the home, “because in an evening room you want more Zen.” The ceiling molding was already in place but had been painted in three different colors and two textures. “We smoothed it out and painted it subtle shades of the linen color,” says DuPont. The mirrored side table, mirror-finished night stands and mercury glass lamps add a spark of silver to the space, while the antique brass finish on the chandelier and the metal frame surrounding the curved wall mirror present a quiet strength with their matte finishes. Riccardelli added a vase of orange silk lilies for a pop of color. The powder bath originally contained a freestanding Bombe front French look vanity with a decorative bowl. and curvaceous pendant lights accentuate the height of the room. The mirror is framed in leather with a pewter tracery appliquÊ. The renovation continued outdoors, with all new furniture for the deck and the removal of a multitude of plants, most of which had been housed in Mediterranean style pots. Thinning out the greenery and simplifying the area opened up a new focus on the previously obscured vanishing edge pool. The home’s exterior was repainted a shade of taupe that complements the driveway pavers and barrel tile roof, toning down the Mediterranean feel and exuding a classic elegance,
