H OLY C ROSS L UTHERAN C HURCH

— P ASTOR ’ S C ORNER —

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Recently in a worship service, we talked about how God gives us more than we need, but how sometimes we forget that. We took the time to write down some of our blessings, and hung them on post-it notes all over the Sanctuary. I wanted to take a moment and share some of those blessings with you: 3 turtles Having a job My family My wonderful wife The safe recovery of my mother from heart surgery The smiles of my family & friends each & every day and the ability to provide for them Nice parents Good friends & neighbors State track championship Healthy kids A bed to sleep on The opportunity to have a Wild Water West pass to spend time with my friends & to enjoy nature Transportation to get places Lots of kids in our church Enough money to pay my bills God gave me the strength to move forward Birth of a new great-grandson My birthday – another healthy year

Retirement A wonderful church & church family The sun came up – I got to see it... another day to enjoy Reconciling with long lost friends For the parents that raised me & the parents that raised my wife God’s never ending love Everything that I’ve gotten in the past 11 1/2 years God’s Word – the privilege to lead a study Friendship in Pierce & his testimony I am blessed with 2 healthy children & an amazing job & co-workers! Thankful for my 97-year-old mother’s health crisis passed! Great friends during the time of losing my dad A normal, pleasant conversation with my troubled sister Strength in suffering Engagement to a man I love

The list could go on & on & on...

JULY 2012

AS THE SUMMER CONTINUES... I find myself often pulled by a job that I enjoy with its ‘structured’ unpredictability and by the people at home who want & need me for an unending list of activities. It’s the modern-day question of balancing work & family – and where does God fit into all of this?! All too soon, Holy Cross will be ‘up & running’ again with its fall programs (e.g., Sunday School, Confirmation, Choirs, & more) and seemingly endless ‘little things’ that need to be done. I can only pray that God will give me the perseverance to maintain a healthy equilibrium while ensuring that I continue to serve him above all things. In Christ’s loving grace, have a safe & relaxing summer! Please send your comments & thoughts to me, Tami Matson (TAMIM@HOLYCROSSLUTHERANCHURCH.ORG), to let me know what you think.

I encourage you this month to take the time to think of the blessings that God has given to you...and to thank God for them. And know that when I count my blessings, I thank God for each and every one of you. Let us praise God, for surely God has given us “More than enough!!” (written on a post-it note).

“LUNCH & LEARN”

A DULT E DUCATION

for 55+ Come & be a part of this new ministry for members & friends of Holy Cross, 55+.

The next gathering is Tuesday, July 10, starting at 12:15pm.

Bring your own lunch to the Fellowship Hall to share in food & fellowship for about 30 minutes. A “learning” time follows until about 1:30pm. The guest speaker on July 10th is:

CHARLOTTE MCGRATH MSW, CSW-PIP, WOMEN VETERANS PROGRAM MANAGER AT THE SIOUX FALLS VA HOSPITAL.

Learn more about the changing face of women veterans & what the VA is doing to meet their healthcare needs.

SUMMERTIME & THE READING IS EASY!

Summer is here – time to check out the Holy Cross Library! New books are added regularly! Here’s a look at a few...

“A TREASURY OF MIRACLES FOR WOMEN,” KAREN KINGSBURY.

A heart-warming collection of true stories about wondrous events in the lives of ordinary mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, & friends.

“THROUGH MY EYES,” TIM TEBOW WITH NATHAN WHITAKER.

Professional football player, Tim Tebow, details his early years as the son of Christian missionaries, to his home-schooled upbringing, to his parents’ emphasis on developing his character & faith.

“THAT’S WHY I’M HERE: THE CHRIS & STEFANIE SPIELMAN STORY,” CHRIS SPIELMAN.

A powerful story for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer & for anyone whose faith has wavered in the face of adversity. It is the inspiring story of Chris & his late wife, Stefanie – a story of family, faith, & perseverance.

“CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE: PARENTING TO INSPIRE VALUES,” DOROTHY LAW NOLTE.

The author offers a powerful guide to parenting – by inspiring values through example.

CONGREGATIONAL BOOK REVIEW: DUANE NOERENBERG

I READ THIS BOOK: “MY STORY, MY SONG,” LUCIMARIAN ROBERTS.

Family, dealing with our past & segregation, Tuskegee airmen, daughter Robin (GMA), & dinner every night with family including candles on the table – whether baked beans, hot dogs or steak – but, this is a good book & an easy read.

Please sign up at the kiosk for this gathering; dessert will be provided. Also, please plan to not arrive any earlier than 12:00. (By doing so, you allow the staff time to transition from the preschool/extendedcare lunch to the “Lunch & Learn” event.)

A special ‘thank you” to Dr. Homan, last month’s speaker!

ADULT ED IN THE FALL:

Planning is underway for Sunday morning Adult Ed. If you would like to lead/facilitate a discussion, please contact Angie.

July 2012

Page 5

Being in the U.S. Army, attending college at Valparaiso University (IN) near Chicago, IL, and living & working in Philadelphia, PA, gave me a perspective on dealing with segregation & its impact in the U.S. during that time – this book highlights how it affected Lucimarian, her family, & life. She tells a wonderful story about family & the gifts God gives to each of us to use for His work in this life. As I read, I recalled our first Family Ministry AiM at Holy Cross (Pat Eidsness) & her quoting a study about the importance of gathering the family for a meal, each day. This book related the importance of God, family, & vocation in our calling.

If you read a book from the HC Library and are willing to write a brief review, please contact Angie!

Remember to save and turn in your Crossroads receipts!

Holy Cross receives 5% of the total amount spent to go toward the purchase of new books. Contact Angie Smith regarding Adult Education at Holy Cross. (605) 362-1947 or ANGIES@HOLYCROSSLUTHERANCHURCH.ORG

P RESCHOOL P ARADE A WORD

FROM

MISS TRICIA...

Summer fun fills the halls of Holy Cross as the children of Holy Cross Lutheran Preschool & Extended-Care dive in to summer investigating God’s creations around us through summer camps and activities allowing children the opportunity for smaller group, hands-on discovery & learning. During the month of June, the children have engaged in many fun activities off-campus. They have attended McKennan Park’s Children Theater, “splashed into” various outdoor water activities, visited Yogi Bear Campground between Sioux Falls & Brandon, toured the Sioux Falls Pheasant stadium while learning fundamentals of baseball, attended a Sioux Falls Pheasants game as an HCLP family event, explored at the Outdoor Campus, and, of course, walked over & enjoyed Discovery Park. What fun it is to be a kid!

HOLY CROSS PRESCHOOL IS LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL, LIKE-NEW HIGH CHAIRS AND PACK & PLAYS FOR THE FALL! Contact the preschool for additional information.

Outside of caring for & teaching the children of HCLP, here is what else we have been up to over the summer:

1 In May, the Preschool sold a chance to win a FREE summer camp. A total of $115 was raised and 100% was given to the youth who will be going to New Orleans.

2 An additional $265 was also given to the youth from May’s Hy-Vee sales. Thank you for those who bought to help support the youth!

3 The preschool has purchased a washer & dryer for use by ALL of

Holy Cross! The washer & dryer are be located in the custodian’s room at the north end of the building. Operating instructions will be posted for use.

4 HCLP is moving their playground to the back northeast corner of

the building. All landscaping work & equipment has been paid for by the preschool. With the continued support of all those who purchase

Hy-Vee cards, they have helped make it possible... Thank you! When

complete, we will have two separate playgrounds with age-appropriate equipment & activities for toddlers and preschoolers. The children cannot wait for their new outdoor adventure!

5 Continued enrollment for 2012-13: Openings for 4- & 5-year-olds are all that remain... Contact the preschool NOW to enroll!

PRESCHOOL CLASSES FOR THE 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR:

The preschool classes for the 2012-13 school year are almost full. If you have a child that will be 4- & 5-years-old by Sept. 1st, we have a few openings remaining. Contact the preschool for additional information.

CONSIDER A GIFT THAT LASTS The Holy Cross E NDOWMENT F UND allows the church to enhance the mission outreach & ministry of the congregation. Just a few examples are “Dollars for Scholars” or “Quilters” & “Prayer Shawl” ministries. So when you give to the E NDOWMENT F UND , your monies continue to support the mission & ministry of Holy Cross FOREVER. To give, just specify “E NDOWMENT F UND ” under ‘other’ on your offering evelope. THRIVENT “CHOICE DOLLARS” Can Be Directed to Holy Cross!
