Ice Hockey teams net successful seasons Women win ECAC title; Men reach AHA semi-finals

To Our Readers

CRUSADER nation

Dear Friends of Crusader Athletics,

Director of Athletics Richard M. Regan, Jr. ’76

As the Class of 2011 departs for the “real world,” over 150 studentathletes have graduated, reunions have just ended, and the campus is quiet again. It’s an appropriate moment to look back at the year and highlight a few things that have taken place over the winter and spring seasons: • The Women’s Ice Hockey team won its third consecutive ECAC Open Championship in a shootout thriller over St. Anselm. Senior Jocelyn Kratchmer was named the Tournament MVP as she concluded her Holy Cross career as the all-time leader in points scored (145).

• The Softball team reached the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since the 2003 season, earning the most wins since the 1999 season. Brian Claypool was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the first time in his four seasons at Holy Cross. Sophomore Sam Fregenti broke the single-season home run record with 11 home runs.

• Holy Cross student-athletes have once again proven to be among the best in the country in the classroom as 14 teams have received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for being in the top 10% of colleges and universities for their sport. Holy Cross is tied with Georgetown for 11th place in the nation for having the most teams recognized. That is even more impressive when one considers that many of the institutions with more teams honored offer more sports than Holy Cross. • I would like to take this opportunity to welcome two new head coaches to the Crusader community. Please join me in welcoming Erin Walker as the head coach of the Volleyball team and Jim Morrissey as the head coach of the Men’s Lacrosse team. In this issue you will read more about the men’s and women’s ice hockey and softball teams’ journeys to their league tournaments. Pictured on the cover are Mike Daly ’12 and Stacy Hochkins ’12. Both of these student-athletes have been named captains of their teams for the 2011- 2012 season and have played integral roles in the success of their programs. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your generous and loyal support of the Crusader Athletics Fund. As we near the end of the fifth year of our annual fundraising campaign, I would like to remind you how important your donations are to Holy Cross athletics. They allow us to provide our coaches and studentathletes with additional resources for recruiting, better equipment, more travel and team development above and beyond budgeted support from the College. We began fundraising for football three years earlier than the rest of the department, and one only has to look at their success to get a sense of how important it has been to us. It is a difference maker! Finally, I hope that you all have an enjoyable and relaxing summer. My hope is to see all of the faithful alumni, family and friends of Crusader Athletics on September 1 at the first-ever night game at Fitton Field when the football team hosts UMass under the lights. Go Crusaders!

Ice Hockey teams net successful seasons Women’s team wins ECAC title; Men’s team reaches AHA semi-finals By Chris Edmonds ’04

T

he Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams share the same Hart Center rink, they sport the same purple and white uniforms, and—with this past winter as evidence—they both know a thing or two about turning midseason adversity into late-season success. For the women, that spelled capturing the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open title in an overtime shootout. For the men, it meant reeling off the longest unbeaten run in program history and advancing to the semifinals of the Atlantic Hockey Association tournament. To hear players and coaches tell it, this was a special year on the ice for the Crusaders, and it may well point the way to sustained success down the road.

Another year, another title Jocelyn Kratchmer doesn’t remember exactly how the final moment of her Holy Cross career played out. “It’s all kind of a blur,” the captain said. In that blur, Kratchmer scored the victoryclinching goal in the ECAC Open championship game’s overtime shootout against St. Anselm College on Feb. 27. The open title was the third in as many years for the women’s team, and for Kratchmer, a senior, it was the sweetest. “This one’s the most memorable—to end on such a good note,” she said. “Every year we win it, it feels better.” The Crusaders tore through the 2010 portion of their schedule, reeling off nine wins in their first 11 games. Regrouping after the winter break, the team encountered its sole rough patch, dropping three straight in early January. The downturn, however, helped set the Crusaders up for their push to the postseason, junior captain Stacey Hochkins said.

Senior captain Jocelyn Kratchmer concluded her career with 145 points, the most all-time in school history. CRUSADER nation

“We had that stretch where we were playing against tougher teams and losing, but in a sense, that made us better,” she said. The team dispelled of its funk with a 7-1 win over St. Michael’s College on Jan. 15, ticked off four wins in the next five games, and skated through the open tournament with a win over Sacred Heart University and the shootout victory over St. A’s. Through it all, the team relied on the strength and balance of its roster, Coach Peter Van Buskirk said. “The key to being one of the top teams these last four years is balance,” he said. “We’ve been able to balance top talent with a very good supporting talent. That gives us the depth we need in order to compete.” Chief among that top talent are Kratchmer and Hochkins, who this season broke the program’s career goals record and moved into second place on the points list.

Peter Van Buskirk has been affiliated with the Holy Cross ice hockey program for over 30 years, serving as the men’s head coach from 1979-1988 and again during the 1996-1997 season, before taking over the women’s program in 2000.

“They’re the difference-makers for us,” said Van Buskirk, who has been behind the bench for the women’s team for 11 years and spent 10 years leading the men’s squad. When Hochkins returns for a second season as captain, she’ll meet up with a new-look team. Some 18 freshmen will arrive on campus with their hockey gear in tow come the fall. “Everyone, including the returning players, knows there’s going to be more competition,” Hochkins said.

Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year Paul Pearl is the program’s all-time winningest coach.

With limits placed on how many players can dress for a game—18 skaters, three goalkeepers—Van Buskirk will have some tough decisions to make about who plays and who doesn’t. While not an enviable task, it comes with the territory, he said. “It’s what everybody is facing right now— the growth of women’s hockey—and that’s a good thing,” he said.

Confidence game The Men’s Hockey team kept Coach Paul Pearl on his toes this year. While the team didn’t defy expectations, the way it progressed from October to March was marked with historic highs and headscratching lows. “At the beginning of the season, the way we came out was a surprise,” Pearl said. “The middle of the season was a surprise, too, because I thought we were better than that, and then late in the season, we set a school record for unbeaten streak.” The Crusaders rushed out to a 6-4-1 start, including opening its AHA slate 4-1-1. That gave way to a 1-10-1 stretch, before the team rallied for an 8-0-3 run to close the regular season, gutted past Canisius College in the AHA quarterfinals and fell to Air Force in the league semis. The 11-game unbeaten run was the school’s longest since a 10-game streak in the 19791980 season. For Pearl, the solidifying of the team’s defense got the roll started and kept it going. “Adam Roy came in and really settled us down in goal,” he said. ‘With that, we started playing much better defense overall, limiting scoring chances and limiting our goals against.” Senior captain Everett Sheen saw the spark as something even simpler: The team regained its confidence. “We just started believing in ourselves,” Sheen said, “and it’s amazing what can happen when you do that.” The streak started with a 3-3 tie against Rochester Institute of Technology. Wins followed in the next seven games. “We were fed up with losing,” junior forward Mike Daly said. “The older guys took it upon themselves to say enough is enough.”

That attitude carried into the postseason where the Crusaders hosted Canisius in best of three quarterfinal. The Crusaders took the first game, 6-3, but found themselves in a must-win after dropping the second game 3-2 in overtime. Arriving for game three, Pearl found another surprise waiting for him. “We felt really bad the night before, as players and as coaches,” Pearl said, “but then I walk into the locker room and they’re laughing and joking and watching video. They couldn’t wait to get out there. That’s what I’ll remember this group for— their unwavering confidence.” With this season’s success comes greater expectations for 2011-2012, tempered as they are with the lessons learned from 2010-2011. “It’s dangerous to think that because you got close this year, you’ll go back and win it next year,” Pearl said. “Our biggest goal will be to play 34 games with consistency.” 2010-2011 ECAC Champions

Senior captain Everett Sheen led the team this season with a career-best 17 goals.

Hitting It Out of the Park Softball team gets taste of Patriot League tournament By Amy Martin ’11

T

he 2010-2011 Crusader Softball team accumulated a laundry list worth of recognition throughout the season: five Patriot League Player of the Week recognitions, one Patriot League Rookie of the week honor, one AT&T Crusader of the week, one member on the Patriot League AllAcademic Team and CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, one ECAC Division 1 player of the week recognition, five team members named to the All-Patriot League team, one Patriot League Coach of the Year, and one trip to the Patriot League tournament; and that doesn’t even begin to highlight all the records broken or games won. All of these honors collected by a team which hasn’t been to the Patriot League Tournament since 2003 and was

But for seniors Katie Alexander, Caitlin Belanger, Erin Flemming, Tiffany Medwid and Keeley Senuik, the accomplishments have been a long time coming. “I knew one day we would get to the tournament but I just did not know which year it was going to be,” said Alexander, a pitcher. Flemming, a utility player, echoed these sentiments, stating that making it to the tournament couldn’t have been a more perfect time. “I am so glad that it was with this 2011 team,” she reflected.

then missing the 2010 Patriot League Tournament because of tiebreak. “Last year we knew we had a team that was capable of getting to the Patriot League Championship, and for us to come into a situation where they were out because of a tiebreak, left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth,” fourth year coach and 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year Brian Claypool recounted, “That motivated them from that moment on. We didn’t have to twist arms to get kids to work over the summer. They came in this fall and every time we would break a huddle, we would say, ‘PLC 2011!,’ knowing that our goal was to get there.”

It has undoubtedly been a long road for this group of five seniors, as they endured three years of losing seasons within conference,

In addition to making it to the Patriot League tournament and achieving the lengthy list of accomplishments, the 2011

picked to finish 5th in this year’s Patriot League preseason poll.

Sophomore Sem Fregenti broke the single-season home run record with 11 home runs.

squad also took down some long rivaled foes including Boston University this spring and University of Massachusetts during the fall. It was in that win over the Minutewomen that Claypool began to notice a change in the girls, most notably in their confidence. “To go down to UMASS and win a 1-0 game in the fall was huge. That was the true moment where they looked at each other said, ‘We can do this.’” With the boost in confidence Claypool also saw a motivated team. “You could see it in their work in the weight room. They’re up in the bating cages all the time hitting on their own. They’re doing the extra work it takes to be a contender without having being asked to do it.” This shift in mindset was also a positive change for the seniors. Medwid, a shortstop, felt as though the team had a different outlook this year, “[In past years] we started to accept that the little things we did not do were essentially okay. My junior year, we finally realized that being mediocre was anything but great. This year we felt the belief in each other and from the start of our season, our goal was to make it to the tournament. The 19 of us had this burning passion to be a successful team on the field and not to let another tournament berth slip through our fingers.” She continued, “It was remarkable to see the enthusiasm this year compared to past season and I really think that is what got us to where we are now.” Pitcher and infielder Caitlin Belanger also felt the trend toward positivity. “The first three years were definitely a work in progress. From my freshman year, I knew that my class had talent that could eventually lead our team into the tournament and beyond, but this potential wasn’t something that came over night. We put in a lot of hard work and did everything we could to try to help our team reach the level we are at now.” When thinking back on the season and her four years Belanger stated, “This year has been absolutely amazing, finally being able to see all the positive results of our hard work over the past three years.” Adding to the list of accomplishments would also be the countless school records that have been broken this season. Sophomore infielder Sam Fregenti had an extremely productive season at the plate taking down the single season home run and runs batted in records. Fregenti CRUSADER nation

also moved into first for all-time batting average and slugging percentage at Holy Cross. “There is such an amazing group of athletes in our underclassmen,” Belanger said of her younger teammates. “Reaching the tournament early on in their college careers will encourage them to strive beyond that.” Belanger too now owns several records of her own including runs scored, hits and doubles in a single season along with the all time highest number of stolen bases at Holy Cross. Not to be outdone, Senuik has also been equally as impressive at the plate capturing the single season home run and hits records, along with the all time home runs and doubles records. “As a freshman I don’t think I had any clue as to how it would feel to make it to the tournament and receive the type of recognition that we have received,” Senuik said. “We achieved such a major accomplishment making it to the tournament this year, and although we came up a little short in the tournament, I am so proud of all the girls and know that they have the hunger in their hearts to go even further next year.” Despite coming up a little short, the bar for next year is set just as high, if not higher. “My hope is that the program continues to grow and turn heads within our league,” said Belanger. “They are lucky,” added Flemming, “They’ve been to the PL tournament now and I don’t think they will accept not being there next year. I hope they expect to be there every year from here on out.”

For Claypool all the accomplishments have certainly been impressive and reason for celebration, but there is one intangible that he is most proud of— the team’s resilience. “We’ve gone from that team where if we’re beating a league team by one in the bottom of the 6th, it was deer in the headlights,” he recalled, “But now if we’re down it’s like, ‘Hit me the ball!’ or ‘Put me in the box, I’ll hit one out of here.’ It’s that little bit of confidence, but it took resilience to get to that point.” An attribute that will no doubt allow the future Crusaders to add to the program’s already growing list of accomplishments, including a Patriot League Title.

CRUSADER ATHLETICS FUND

Gifts to the Crusader Athletics Fund directly impact the experience of each student-athlete on campus. Holy Cross was proud to have 2,225 donors give to Crusader Athletics last year. We hope to continue the momentum as we work to further narrow the gap between the resources Holy Cross has available for athletics and the resources of the colleges and universities with which we compete. Thanks to gifts to the Crusader Athletics Fund, the Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs were provided opportunities to practice off-campus at a nearby indoor artificial turf training facility during the inclement weather. This provided the student-athletes with a far superior place to play compared to Holy Cross’ Field House. The associated costs are beyond what’s in our normal budget, but your donations allowed us to provide this enhancement. Holy Cross Football To Play FirstEver Home Night Game The Holy Cross Football team will play its first-ever night game at Fitton Field in its season opener against the University of Massachusetts on Thursday, Sept. 1. This historic event marks the 558th game in the history of Fitton Field. “It will be great to have the game take place against one of our long-time New England rivals in UMass,” said Holy Cross athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr. “We will face several challenges, because the areas underneath the stands and the parking lots will need to be lit, in addition to the field. But we feel that this will be a worthwhile venture for our student-athletes, alumni and fans.” Tickets can be purchased by calling (508) 793-2573 or online at www.tickets.com.

Donor Profile Mike Toner ’63 (Swimming & Diving)

President, South Setauket Financial Center South Setauket, N.Y.

How would you describe your experience as a Holy Cross student-athlete? “We didn’t have a pool back in the 60’s. We practiced at night at the Worcester YMCA. Nor did we have a coach. We did it all ourselves. As co-captains, Phil Dunne and I made up the nightly workouts and took care of all the details involved in running a team. This gave us a rather unique experience in how to lead a team in intercollegiate competition, how to motivate, how to find the best in others and, most importantly, how to create a special bond among our teammates. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but it was this bond that motivated a bunch of us, some 40 years later, to swim around Manhattan (four times – 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) in the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, swim across the English Channel (2004), and swim with the dolphins and sharks in the Catalina Marathon swim (2006), thus making us the oldest team in history to complete the Triple. In the following years came the Maui Channel (Lanai to Maui), the Strait of Gibraltar (Spain to Morocco), the Strait of Messina (Sicily to Italy), the River Liffey (Dublin, Ireland) and our latest, the Swim to the Moon. The bond we formed as Holy Cross swimmers will last forever.”

What inspires you to give back to the Swimming and Diving program through the Crusader Athletics Fund? “After all these years, I am constantly inspired by and amazed at how strong the bond among swimmers is. Kate Reilly ’02 demonstrated that when she came up with the idea for an Annual Alumni Swim Meet, which we’ve now had for the past six years. Giving to the Crusader Athletics Fund not only helps to provide the present team with special experiences which they will remember forever, but it also reinforces our own connection to the team, no matter when we were on it.

How would you encourage others to give to the Crusader Athletics Fund?

Fitton Field—in the future. CRUSADER nation

The amount one gives is not as important as the percentage of alumni who participate. When that little envelope comes in the mail, I would encourage all to remember that although we may not lead the nation in Olympic-caliber athletes, we can lead the country in alumni participation because we have something that no other school has, the special bond which Holy Cross has created, nurtured and developed in us.” summer 2011

Sports Recap Men’s Basketball The Men’s Basketball team finished the 20102011 campaign with an overall record of 8-21 in its first year under new head coach Milan Brown. After struggling through a slow start during the non-conference portion of the season, the Crusaders rebounded in the second half of the year to finish in third place in the Patriot League. Holy Cross finished behind only Bucknell and American in the final conference standings. In the final statistics for Patriot League games, the Crusaders led the conference in field goal percentage (45.9 percent) and blocked shots (4.0 blocks per game), while ranking second in scoring margin (+3.3 points per game), field goal percentage defense (40.8 percent), three-point field goal percentage defense (29.2 percent) and rebounding margin (+4.5 rebounds per game). Even though Holy Cross’ record in the Patriot League was just 7-7, the Crusaders never lost a conference game by more than seven points, with the total combined margin of defeat in their seven losses being 26 points. After the conclusion of the season, senior center Andrew Keister (Galloway, N.J.) was selected as the 2010-2011 Crusader of the Year. Keister also earned second team AllPatriot League honors, marking the third time he was selected all-conference during his collegiate career. He averaged 12.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocked shots per game this year, while making 51.6 percent (127 of 246) of his field goal attempts. Over the course of his collegiate career, Keister totaled 945 points and 752 rebounds, while making 52.0 percent (376 of 723) of his field goal attempts and posting 30 double-doubles. Keister ranks sixth all-time at Holy Cross in career field goal percentage and 11th in career rebounds. Junior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) had a strong season, and joined Keister on the All-Patriot League second team. Brown averaged a team-best 15.4 points per game, while hitting 35.9 percent (60 of 167) of his three-point attempts and 80.6 percent (104 of 129) of his free throws. Brown led the team in scoring 15 times this year and scored in double-figures 21 times, including 10 straight double-digit scoring games to end the regular season. Senior guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.) received the Richard J. Maloney Award, presented annually to the Men’s Basketball player who best exemplifies Mr. Maloney’s spirit and energy as a loyal contributor to the program. Beinert averaged 7.7 points, 4.1 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game, while making 37.6 percent (44 of 117) of his three-point field goals and posting a 1.93-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Women’s Basketball The Women’s Basketball team wrapped up its season with an overall record of 10-20, marking six wins and eight losses in Patriot League play. The squad finished their season with a loss to American in the first round of the Patriot League tournament. Two players earned 2010-2011 All-Patriot League honors, including senior captain

Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.). Fremeau was named to the first team All-Patriot League for the first time in her career while Smith earned a spot on the All-Rookie squad. Fremeau ended her career with her best season on record. The captain led the squad with 14.2 points per game and added 4.3 rebounds per contest. She finished the season at No. 21 in the team’s all-time leading scorers list, scoring 427 points in 2010-2011 and recording a total of 1,093 career points. In her 115 career games played, Fremeau added 459 rebounds and 215 assists to her 1,093 career points. Fremeau was also honored for her academics as she was named to the inaugural All-Academic Patriot League team and was an honorable mention on the National Jesuit All-Academic team. Smith enjoyed much success in her first season wearing a Crusaders uniform. After the season, Smith ranked second on the team with 11.1 points, added 3.4 rebounds per game and shot 36.8 percent from the floor. Eighty-two of her field goals made came as three-point shots, which ranks second in the Holy Cross single season records list for three-pointers made. She reached the 20-point mark three times over the season, including a season-high 22 points against Northeastern, where she also notched season-bests with eight field goals made. She won the team’s Winter Homecoming Game MVP honor and was named to the Cavalier Classic’s All-Tournament Team. She led in assists, collecting 98 in all. Through the 30 games this year, the five-member freshman class, consisting of Smith, Brisje Malone (Springfield, Mass.), Kelly Hamner (Manassas, Va.), Christine Ganser (Needham, Mass.) and Kristen Fuery (Dresher, Pa.) showed why head coach Bill Gibbons had so much faith in their immediate impact on the program. Over 2010-2011, the newcomers scored 743 of the team’s 1,817 total points, brought down 146 out of 1,063 rebounds and added 183 of the 461 assists and 98 of the 240 total steals. In all, the freshman class led the squad in scoring 12 times and in rebounding nine times.

Men’s Ice Hockey The 2010-2011 Men’s Hockey team went 17-16-5 overall (14-8-5 Atlantic Hockey) as the Crusaders’ 17 overall wins were their most in a season since they won a school record 27 games in 2005-2006. Also their 14 Atlantic Hockey wins were their most in a season since they won a program-best 19 games also in 2005-2006. The Crusaders set a new school record with 12 straight games without a loss as Holy Cross went 9-0-3 between Jan. 22– March 11 which also included a seven-game winning streak. The Crusaders finished in third place in the Atlantic Hockey standings, which was their best finish since they placed first in the in the 2005-2006 season. The Crusaders then defeated Canisius in a best two-out-ofthree Atlantic Hockey Tournament quarterfinal series at the Hart Center. The Crusaders clinched the series with a 7-3 victory in the third game. This was the first time since the 2005-2006 season that the Crusaders had advanced past the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament. Holy Cross fell to eventual champion Air Force, 3-2, in the semifinals in Rochester, N.Y. The Crusaders scored 128 goals which were the most in a season since netting 130 in 2005-2006, while their 3.37 goals per game were the most since they averaged 3.53 in the 2001-2002 season. The Crusaders had the best power play in Atlantic Hockey and the fourth nationally with a 24.1 percentage.

Paul Pearl was named the Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. Also sophomore forward Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) won the Atlantic Hockey Best Defensive Forward award and freshman defenseman Jeffrey Reppucci (Newburyport, Mass.) earned All-Rookie team accolades. For his career, senior Everett Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) recorded 52 goals and 52 assists for 104 points in a school record 149 games. He is the 39th Crusader to record 100 points and is the ninth player to reach 100 points in the Division I era. Senior goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) is second all-time on the Holy Cross Division I list with 1,910 career saves and 25 career victories. Senior Mark Znutas (Emerson, N.J.) played 145 career games which are third all-time for games played. Sophomore Kyle Fletcher (Kanata, Ontario) led the team with 38 points, while Sheen was second with 35 points and Linsmayer was third with 34 points. These were career seasons for all three players.

Women’s Ice Hockey The Women’s Ice Hockey team (17-9-1 overall, 13-50 ECAC East) concluded the 2010-2011 season with its third consecutive ECAC Open championship. 1961

The Holy Cross two-mile relay team captured the IC4A crown in the spring of 1961 at Madison Square Garden with a winning time of 7:43.5. The four-member team that included three sophomores and one senior gave Coach Bart Sullivan one of his finest indoor seasons of his Holy Cross coaching career. Comprised of Tom Noering ’63, Jack O’Connor ’63, Captain Jay Bowers ’61 and Charlie Buchta ’63, this relay team never finished lower than 2nd place the entire season and also captured the AAU two-mile relay title in New York just two weeks before winning the IC4A title.
