Miss Westwood, Mathematics Teacher: Last week 60 students from Year 7 and 8 sat the Junior Maths Challenge. The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in one hour and is taken in school under normal examination conditions. They competed against thousands of students from around the United Kingdom. The results will be published as soon as we have them. Good luck to all who took part. Here is a sample question for you to have a go at. The diagram shows a rectangular envelope made by folding (and gluing) a single piece of paper. Miss Thomas, Coordinator of MFL: On their last lesson of the Spring term, group 9S1 experienced a real taste of Spain – traditional Spanish tapas dishes! Students tucked into chorizo (spicy Spanish sausage), Spanish ‘queso’ (cheese), tortillas, pan (bread) and some even tried ‘aceitunas’ (olives) for the first time, though one student was definitely not a fan! Why not look out for some of these tapas classics next time you’re in the supermarket?

Mrs Brookes, Senior Assistant Principal: Year 7 Parents’ Evening will take place on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st May 2014 between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. You will meet with a member of staff who will provide details of your child's progress so far this year. You will shortly receive a letter in the mail detailing your appointment day and time. If you are unable to attend the appointment, please inform the Academy as soon as possible.
The MFL Department are running a French Club every Wednesday lunch time at 1.00pm in B1. Come along and watch French cartoons and read French comic books. Have fun and improve your French!
SCOTTY G’S WEEKLY SPECIAL – COME AND TRY A TASTE OF THE DEEP SOUTH! This week in Scotty G’s come and try our Louisiana Jambalaya, served with corn on the cob and coleslaw. Also on the menu is oven baked ham with parsley sauce and our crispy topped cheese & vegetable pie. ON THE WRAPS COUNTER – try our new value meal for £1.85 - a box including a choice from the spicy chicken selection, together with half a jacket potato, salad and a large drink carton. REMEMBER – all our meats and vegetables are sourced from local suppliers.

The Academy allotment is alive with new growth. Ken Kelsall, who comes in each week to tend the allotment, and support staff using the allotment as a teaching resource has planted onions, broad beans, potatoes and beetroot so far this year. Tomatoes and cucumbers have been planted in the poly tunnel. All produce grown in the allotment and the orchard is used in Scotty G’s, which also uses the fresh herbs from our own herb garden.
Miss Haycock, Director of Teaching & Learning People & Places: The U14 girls netball team played a number of league fixtures over the season and although they had a few defeats from neighbouring schools, they were crowned winners of the South Borough. They were invited to the Dudley Borough Netball finals night on Thursday 1 May 2014 where they played a final match against the North Borough winners, Kingswinford. The girls fought hard against a very strong Kingswinford team and finished runners up. A good season all round, well done girls. Also, a well done to the U15 girls netball squad who also achieved some good results. I would like to make a plea for new players from Year 7 and 8 to make up teams to be entered into leagues in the next academic year. If anyone is interested they need to see Miss Haycock for more details.

Mr Nation, Mathematics Teacher: Year 10 and 11 revision classes are currently taking place in A12 every Tuesday at the end of the Academy day. The work focuses on practising examination questions for students aiming to achieve at least a grade C at the end of Year 11.
Congratulations to Mr Elliott, Year 8 Learning Mentor who recently completed and passed a course through the Institute of Child Education & Psychology ’Positive Psychology for Behaviour and Learning’. Mr Elliott has already started using some of the techniques he has learned from the course to help students in the Academy to improve their learning and motivation.
