Executive Board Reports

2

A.

President—R. Cinquemani i.

Effective Communication and Respectful Meeting Spaces Presentation 1.

“Ways of Being” presentation: Feeling, Relating, and Doing — essentially being sensitive and keeping Senate and the Hofstra community a “safe space” — always being aware of other people’s feelings

2.

Broke into groups to think of “mantras” to use when working together

3.

4.

5.

a.

Senator Algarin: “Embrace and be open minded to differences because they make us stronger” — Chairperson Denton inspired her group

b.

Senator MacCarthy: “Stay openminded, be patient, stay accepting” because no one should be offending anyone, and everyone’s thoughts are valid

c.

Senator Craig: “teamwork makes the dream work”

d.

Comptroller Kutsch: “be conscious” because there’s always context and a need to be conscious of your surroundings and backgrounds and other people

e.

Chairperson Denton: “stay positive, openminded, and smile”: it’s important to smile to keep things friendly no matter what is going on

f.

Senator Crofts: “one dream one team” - because it doesn’t matter about the individuals - it’s about unity with a common goal

g.

Senator Griefs: “listen with an open mind” - as many said, open-mindedness is very important

h.

Secretary Gieger “I think I can” - because it’s important to believe in yourselves no matter what

i.

Chairperson Denton mentions “alone we are one drop; together we are an ocean” - means that working together is important

President Cinquemani notes the common themes discussed: open mindedness and listening - how does this apply to a student who comes to you and complains about things on campus a.

Chairperson Labrie says that we might be defensive but to not show it and to just listen

b.

Chairperson Denton says not to let emotions get in the way

c.

Senator Leighton says to tell them they’re always welcome and you’re here to listen - it’s not about who they are

President Cinquemani asks how SGA can help a.

Senator Fletcher says to tell them where SGA’s office is

b.

Senator Ismail said to refer them to others

c.

Senator MacCarthy says to get them in contact with others in the university, not only internally

d.

Senator Algarin says offer them your own time to listen

e.

Comptroller Kutsch says not to just refer them to other people - tell them the steps and help with the whole process

President Cinquemani asks how to help students with something we don’t agree with

3

a.

Senator Leighton says to listen to them anyway because other peoples’ opinions matter too- might as well hear them out

b.

Senator Crofts said we are representatives and just because someone isn’t here to offer their opinion doesn’t mean we should ignore it

6.

Chairperson Denton adds another mantra “try harder than you want to”

7.

President Cinquemani goes over student affairs mantras - all about hearing, not judging, and that anyone with concerns should be referred to people so they can be helped on campus with concerns

ii.

Board of Trustees Updates- University is good, renovations have been made, highest fall fest attendance in past few years

iii.

Mid Semester reports - none of Senate knows about this - President Cinquemani goes over student success connect and how reports are there

iv.

University Senate updates - Comptroller Kutsch attended and presents this 1.

v.

Student Affairs Committee 1.

vi.

Went over the midsemester reports and some departments want to utilize these to evaluate their department

There is a bill to raise minimum wage - keep in mind this has not passed and that things are missing like a timeline and funding mechanism - students may start talking about this so send anything you hear to President Cinquemani/ Vice President Normandin

What’s Happening at Hofstra 1.

A type of “State of the Union” but about Hofstra - Nov. 1st at common hour - there will be a question and answer session

vii. Compass Updates 1.

G8 is supposed to have transitioned to a hot food bar - try it!

2.

TV in back of student center will be up this weekend

3.

Slushy machines are at Dutch but not filled

4.

All chicken at the hot food bar is Halal meat a.

Senator Farooqui explains that this means that the slaughter is done as kindly and painlessly as possible - Muslim students appreciate this

viii. Random Acts of Kindness Day - Nov. 15th 1.

Last year - SGA gave out chocolate bars with positive sayings and hot cocoa

2.

President Cinquemani asks for a Senator(s) to lead this: a.

ix.

x.

Senate Greenberg and Senator Osner volunteer along with Senator Craig to lead this

Tarana Burke Talk 1.

Nov 1st at 6:30pm - OSAPA contacted SGA about co-sponsoring her being here

2.

Chairperson Denton explains the #metoo campaign - it brings light to sexual assault on women and minorities

Graduation

4

1.

Schedule has not been released because the date might be changing

2.

Senator Craig asks if senior photos are being publicized a.

xi.

President Cinquemani says an email will be going out soon - there are two dates each semester

RHA Halloweentown Monday, Oct. 30th 1.

SGA is doing a slime activity

2.

Chairperson Tomasso explains how EU’s Trunk or Treat has been combined with RHA’s event - Spirit already has a sign up - will send around a sign up for all of Senate

xii. Defamation Experience feedback: 1.

Straw poll on who would be interested in a similar type of event

2.

Straw poll on who would want the exact Defamation Experience play back on campus in the future a.

Comptroller Kutsch thinks it would be beneficial to have it on campus again maybe gain more of a University presence by having it in Adams - it was interesting, and the larger community should see it

b.

Chairperson Radeva says yes have it again but maybe wait a year or so that more new people can see it

c.

Senator Schmidt says yes, she would love to see it again - also people didn’t get to go to all events that week - like Day of Dialogue where they talk about things - starting conversations is great i.

B.

Vice President Normandin says there is a Day of Dialogue every semester with different themes - agrees it is a ‘cool’ event

3.

President Cinquemani and Vice President Normandin are looking at events similar to Defamation Experience for next semester if anyone has any ideas

4.

Senator Schmidt asks about Tarana with #metoo - what is this? a.

President Cinquemani says she is speaking in the Cultural Center theater

b.

Vice President Normandin says this is big because the #metoo campaign is huge right now which she started, and she is a close friend of Sofia’s which is why she will be here

Vice President—A. Normandin i.

Point of information - if you have to leave the room for any reason - give a note to the Ethics and Conduct Chair so that we always keep track of quorum

ii.

Mid Semester and End of Semester SGA reports - Chairs and Executive Board all give reports on what they have done thus far and also their goals - it is important 1.

In the past: SGA has invited administration and they would listen

2.

New idea: invite them but have a half hour of appetizers and mingling/be introduced/ collaborate before the reports

3.

Because of this- would be Nov. 2nd as exact middle of semester but have decided that Nov. 16th sounds like the best time to do this - will be business causal

4.

Senator Narain asks about if this conflicts with budget review

5

a. 5.

Senator Craig asks if End of Semester reports will be the last Senate of the semester and if it will be the same as the Mid Semester reports a.

iii.

C.

Straw poll of if people are interested in having a spring retreat

Vice President shares “starfish story” about how there are so many issues and injustices and wrong things in the world and you might feel how you can make a difference - but even the smallest action has a huge effect - this is particularly in honor of Hofstra Student who passed away - SGA offers support for the community and those grieving

Comptroller—M. Kutsch i.

IRCB - will be meeting again soon

ii.

Budget weekend - will not have to be off projections like other semesters since they have a set number - this is good because Appropriations does not need to leave a buffer

iii.

Grad students can participate in club sports as long as they pay the difference in their activity fee and undergrad activity fee - this will go into the budget as well

iv.

Compass Vouchers - a contribution from Compass for food to clubs - SGA will allocate this but the important thing to know is that the contribution is not real ‘money’ it cannot be allocated - a voucher for a specific event and amount of money 1.

Senator Craig asks if clubs who ask for money for food will get this a.

D.

Comptroller Kutsch says not all will - it’s an allocation but just the main point is that it cannot be allocated

Secretary—A. Gieger i.

VI.

Vice President Normandin says yes administration will be there but more casual and not with food
