ear this fluffy mohair shawl—

which is a half-pie shape when opened up wide—tied in front, tied in back, or wrapped around itself (as shown here). It’s knitted in a basic corded rib stitch with short rows for shaping. The body of the shawl is knitted on big needles in mohair and is contrasted beautifully with the dainty edging worked on smaller needles in a fine, shiny Merino wool. Inspiration for the edging, which is optional, came from a photograph of a chiclooking woman wearing a lacy shawl in Marie Claire Idées, a beautiful French craft magazine worth looking at even if you can’t read French. Review notes on page 86 before beginning to knit. SHAWL

Using circ needle, CO 76 sts loosely. ROW 1: Ssk, M1 (see Notes), p2, turn. ROW 2 (and all even numbered rows): Yo (see Notes), *ssk, M1, p2; repeat from * to end. ROW 3: Ssk, M1, p2, sssk (the yo of the previous row and next 2 sts; see Notes), M1, p2, turn. ROW 5: [Ssk, M1, p2] 2 times, sssk, M1, p2, turn. ROW 7: [Ssk, M1, p2] 3 times, sssk, M1, p2, turn. Continue in pattern as established, working the 4-st repeat one more time every odd-numbered row, until all sts have been worked, ending with an odd-numbered row—76 sts, 37 rows completed.



Finished Measurements Approximately 48" wide by 24" high at deepest point, after blocking. Yarn Shawl body: Berroco Mohair Classic / Berroco Mohair Classic Heather (78% mohair, 13% wool, 9% nylon; 93 yards / 42 grams): 5 balls. Shown in #1138 blue and #A9541 green heather. Shawl edging: Koigu Premium Merino (100% wool; 175 yards / 50 grams): picot edging, 1 ball, shown in #2171 blue; rickrack lace, 2 balls, shown in #2340 green. Needles One 32" circular (circ) needle size US 10 (6.5 mm) for shawl body. One set straight needles size US 3 (3.25 mm) for edging. Change needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge. Notions Stitch holders, stitch markers, yarn needle, crochet hook size H/5 (5 mm) for picot edging (optional), 1–2 yards of smooth, thin scrap yarn for rickrack lace cast-on (optional). Gauge Using larger needle, 14 sts and 19 rows = 4" in lace pattern, after blocking.
