In cut-paper artist Nikki McClure’s latest picture book, a kitten practices the basics of feline behavior over the course of a day. A single word of text per spread teaches readers “how to be a cat”—how to stretch, clean, pounce, feast—while the striking paper cuts illustrate the kitten’s attempts to imitate an adult cat’s mastery of each skill. At times the kitten triumphantly succeeds, and at other times the kitten struggles, in vignettes that range from whimsical to profound. A celebration of all things feline, How to Be a Cat also tells a universal story of mastering life skills, and of the sometimes tender, sometimes stern relationship between parent and child, teacher and pupil. Cat lovers of all ages will connect to this loving portrayal of a mentor-student relationship. Nikki McClure is a self-taught cut-paper artist known for her calendar and gift line. She is the author and illustrator of Collect Raindrops; Mama, Is It Summer Yet?; To Market, to Market; and Apple, and the illustrator of All in a Day, written by Cynthia Rylant. With her signature warmth and lyricism, Newbery winner Cynthia Rylant has crafted a new version

9 781419 708176

of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about a tin soldier who falls in love with a ballerina. As in the original story, the tin soldier’s love for the beautiful ballerina is thwarted by a goblin. The tin

Also AVAil AB le

soldier is separated from the other toys and washed down a sewer, where he encounters a rat and gets swallowed by a fish, but somehow, against all odds, he manages to end up back home only to be cast into the nursery fire. Rylant adds her own twist to the end of the tale, however, for in this version, the tin soldier and the ballerina are melded to each other, rather than melted, in the heat of the fire, so they’ll never be parted again. Rylant’s expert storytelling paired with Corace’s stunning illustrations create a beautiful, unforgettable tale of everlasting love.

A moment later, they headed off. Darel didn’t dare move.

He stayed half-buried, ignoring the pain in his cheek and wrestling the fear in his mind. With patrols like that, how was he going to sneak into the camp? And once he got there, he’d stick out like a . . . well, like a frog in an army of scorpions. If only he really were a sandpaper frog, he’d have the run of the camp as a mercenary. At least, according to Old Jir’s stories. It was hard to imagine a frog crazy enough to wander around amongst a bunch of scorps. Once he was sure the patrol was gone, Darel scrambled out of the sand and brushed the grains from his arms and legs. He felt lightheaded with fear and relief. When his heartbeat returned to normal, he rubbed his aching cheek, then poked around to see what had been jabbing him. Felt like metal. He tugged at a hard edge, and hammered bronze shone dully in the moonlight. A bowl? No, a helmet. A battered old helmet—probably from the Hidingwar. He brushed dirt from the inside, as a glimmer of an idea sparked in the back of his mind. Darel dug around a little more but didn’t find anything else. So he cleaned and polished the helmet as well as he could, then tugged it onto his head. Not a bad fit, though it smelled like dirt. Okay, he told himself. Act like a Kulipari. Act like a warrior. Get moving.

In 1918, the world seems on the verge of apocalypse. Americans roam the streets in gauze masks to ward off the deadly Spanish influenza, and the government ships young men to the front lines of a brutal war, creating an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Sixteen-year-old Mary Shelley Black watches

as desperate mourners flock to séances and spirit photographers for comfort, but she herself has never believed in ghosts. During her bleakest moment, however, she’s forced to rethink her entire way of looking at life and death, for her first love—a boy who died in battle—returns in spirit form. But what does he want from her? Featuring haunting archival early-twentieth-century photographs, this is a tense, romantic story set in a past that is eerily like our own time.

In this fast-paced adventure story, Timothy and Jessamyn are towed through the streets of Manhattan riding in Timothy’s family’s sailboat, on their way to the Long Island shore, when the boat comes unhitched from its truck. The teens “sail” backward down a hill in Upper Manhattan, then fall down a huge construction site hole and into the vast sewer system below. Thrust into an amazing adventure, the kids navigate waterfalls and rapids as they travel through the rain sewers. They meet a graffiti artist their own age, a homeless person named You, and rats the size of large dogs. They fall into the hands of a gangster who claims the sewers as her kingdom and the homeless as her subjects, and acts as a fence for luxury goods! Will she feed Timothy and Jessamyn to the rats? melvin Jules Bukiet, on the faculty at Sarah Lawrence College, is the author of numerous adult books. When Mirror fails to escape the barrier using Granny Relda’s body, he turns to his plan B: killing all the Grimms so that the magical barrier collapses. In the meantime, Sabrina has gathered the other magic mirrors as advisors on how to deal with their mortal enemy. They tell her to join forces with the Scarlet Hand against Mirror, in exchange for offering all the citizens of Ferryport Landing their freedom. This final chapter is the end of the road for several beloved characters, but the conclusion is sure to satisfy devoted fans of the series.

In 1920s Soviet Russia, writer and poet Samuil Marshak and graphic artist Vladimir Lebedev came together to bring the energy and boldness of Russian avant-garde art into children’s publishing. The results of this remarkable collaboration were a series of stunning picture books, four of which are collected and reproduced in full here, newly translated, together in one volume for the first time. The Circus, Ice Cream, How the Plane Made a Plane, and Yesterday and Today are overtly modern and graphically striking. Marshak’s joyful rhymes are visually built into Lebedev’s illustrations, where fig-

also aVail aB le

ures, objects, and even lettering are simplified into brightly colored geometric shapes. The four stories are a wonderful celebration of modern life, and continue to energize and inspire readers decades after their creation. Samuil Marshak (1887–1964) was a prominent writer, translator, critic, publisher, and children’s poet in Soviet Russia. Vladimir Lebedev (1891–1967) was the most influential pre–World War II Russian children’s book illustrator. A painter and graphic artist working in the avant-garde circles of Kazimir Malevich and Vladimir Tatlin, Lebedev was known for bold experimentation with form and style that set high standards in art created for children. Olga Mäeots is librarian at the Russian State Library in the foreign literature department, and head of the children’s book department.
